CONNECTING WITH NATURE = HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER Observe Flowering Plants, Bushes, and Trees Outside. Drink in their beauty and give thanks for their glory. Carry the vision of them throughout your day.

That’s my message this edition to all you lovely Henderson residents! Fall in love with flowers and plant them everywhere! If the gorilla can, we can! Until next time….

A whole range of recent research shows that we could be happier and healthier if we made more of an effort to connect with nature. I love creation and especially adore flowers. In this editorial, I am going to give five tips on how you can appreciate flowers.

Buy one flower. Put it in a place where you can sit and gaze at it. Take time to meditate on it and say~ “I am beautiful – like the flower’. As a guy, I don’t mind saying this! Use that phrase as your prayer throughout the day. Plant flowering seeds outside. When buying seed packets, take time to select the flowers that speak to you. Sowing

them in the earth and watching them grow to maturity and then burst into bloom is magical.

Give cut flowers to friends, neighbours or a stranger on the street. Their glee and huge smile will tell you how this one act of kindness has made their day an extraordinary one.

Slow down and spend a few moments each day to notice their changes. Appreciate their imperfection and the cycle of their lives. Doing so can be a powerful tool in accepting who you are, the stages of your life cycle, and ultimately death.

Anthony Robbins

FOUR REASONS SOME PEOPLE SUCCEED AND OTHERS DON’T Last issue, Anthony Robbins gave four reasons why some people succeed and others don’t. People who succeed: 1. Have a vision 2. Stay consistent long enough 3. They change their environment 4. They don’t listen to naysayers. This issue, Tony gives three more keys to being a success!

They learn from their mistakes and try again. Failure is part of the success formula, so it’s better to accept that sooner if you want to succeed. Be open to mistakes and even welcome them in your life. They are your greatest teachers and make you more experienced. Just don’t give up and always try one more time.

They don’t make excuses. Those who don’t succeed can think of tens of excuses right now as to why today is not the right day to start a project, why it’s better to wait until they have more experience and knowledge and why this may not be the right thing for them. Excuses are only mental barriers, though. You created them and can destroy them as easily.

Brought to you by the BATCHELOR. Your local Real Estate Agent.

Those who succeed are willing to go the extra mile. Average people do what they are expected to do and nothing more. That’s why they can never get to the next level. But leaders prefer to work harder today so that they can be successful after some time. They provide value with everything they do, work more hours, sleep less and dedicate more energy and focus than anyone else around them.

They learn new things all the time. If you avoid learning new stuff, you’re lazy and only getting further from success. But prosperous people, hard-working entrepreneurs, high achievers and outstanding artists are all students of life. They learn from others, from the past, read, travel and get to know themselves more. That helps them exceed every day. I hope you found these helpful! Next issue I will give you four more! LETTERS EDITOR The story about building a healthy community was interesting in the May / June issue. I am thinking that communities are breaking down because of the busyness of life, technology like cellphones, social media etc. We are communicating face to face less and less and it really concerns me. So thank you for providing some points as to what we can do to build a healthy community. Enid, Sturges Road.

Re: Living Well It’s amazing having advice from Anthony Robbins and so very helpful. Can’t wait for the next issue to come out with more pointers as to how I can be successful! No other paper gives practical helpful stuff like you guys do. Thanks. James, Henderson

Re: Karekare Beach Jim’s history story was outstanding. I never knew the history of the beach as Jim told it. Keep these history stories coming. Luv em! Ian, Piha

Re: Paper Availability Why can’t more houses get this paper? I live in Glendene and picked up a copy while in Henderson. How come we are not getting them delivered into our letter boxes? If you could make this happen, that would be good. Sam, Glendene HHCNews: We are planning to increase circulation each issue, eventually going to all of West Auckland. Thank you for your patience.

MECHANCIAL INSURANCE? BEWARE! When an innocent consumer, Bill Anderson bought mechanical insurance from the dealer who sold him the car, it turned out to be a nightmare. “The pre-purchase inspection had raised some issues that could be pricey – air con and transmission,” Bill said. The dealer provided a 36-month mechanical breakdown insurance policy, claiming it would cover any problems. The cover cost Bill $1000. But when problems with the car surfaced, the car dealer never coughed up. It also failed to tell Bill breakdown insurance excluded pre-existing faults and would be of little use if the air conditioning or transmission problems turned into a major expense. Bill had to take the dealership to the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal, which ordered the dealer to pay $1000 for the insurance and $2200 for repairs to the air con system.

“I had to apply to the District Court for a warrant to seize property. This was meant to be served within a month, but wasn’t. Seasons passed, and eventually, a bailiff visited the dealer. But instead of seizing property, the bailiff accepted a cheque – which to everyone’s surprise, except mine, bounced.” It wasn’t until a bailiff paid a second visit to the dealer that Bill finally got his money and not before time. The dealer has since gone into liquidation.

suddenly fail and need repair. Buying the insurance can add more than a grand to your purchase. But the real kicker is the cover you get for your money is often hardly worth having. Policies vary so much. Read the fine print and you’ll find an impressive array of things that aren’t covered, including anything deemed a pre-existing fault. So, if you are buying mechanical insurance for your car, be careful and read the contract fully. Until next time…

THE MIRACLE OF FLOWERS! HOW FLOWERS HAVE COLOUR How do flowers get their colours? Why are roses red and violets blue? People always admire the beautiful colours of flowers in bloom but rarely does anyone know the perfect science that goes into the colour production of one of the earth’s greatest natural beauties. The reason a flower has colour is the same reason a person may be born with brown or blonde hair, possess blue or green eyes, dress in colourful clothing or wear red lipstick.

WHY FLOWERS HAVE COLOUR Let’s talk about the birds and the bees… literally. Flowers that are bright

in colour are meant to attract birds, bees and other insects in order to help the plants reproduce. If a plant needs to reproduce with the help of the birds and the bees – the genetics will make the flowers have bright colours to attract the animals (think putting on makeup and doing hair to attract a mate). If the plant calls for pollination, the bright flower and sweet pollen will coax birds, bees and insects to land on it. As these animals eat the sugar or honey, some of the pollen will stick to their feet. When they land on another flower some

of that pollen will spread and voila! Pollination occurs. Imagine if everyone in Henderson filled their gardens with flowers! What a magnificent sight that would be. Let’s do it!

VOUCHER

The colour of flowers, such as the red in roses and yellow in marigolds, are found in pigments that are decided upon in the hereditary genome of the plant. Flower colours of red, pink, blue and purple come mainly from the pigments called anthocyanins. Other pigments are carotenoids, found in tomatoes and carrots, that provide yellow, red and orange in the plastids. Chlorophyll is the most wellknown pigment, providing all that green you see in leaves and foliage. All these scientific terms really mean that, similar to people, plants carry certain pigments in their genes that decide before they are “born” what colour they will be.

WHY SUE EVANS IS THE Employee of the month Says Store Manager Stuart Millward:

Sue worked at the Warehouse all her life and when she retired from there, she took up a new challenge with us which she has embraced with great passion and enthusiasm. Sue is absolutely marvelous with new staff, nurturing them and genuinely caring for them. She also has a wicked sense of humour which we all enjoy so much. Thanks Sue for being you!

From Sue:

“ For me, the most important thing is our customers. I try to treat each one as I would like to be treated, by greeting them by name each and every time they come in. Because I have lived and worked in West Auckland for 20 years, I know a lot of people. They recognise me and I recognise them. It’s a very simple key to successful customer service.

accidental. The crown alleged Talbot and McKay had interfered with the remains of Shine, on or about January 10, and removed the body from Waikumete cemetery and transported it to Piha. The case of the Australian grave robbers gained significant media attention in the Antipodes and both men were brought to trial in May of 1939, charged with interfering with a body and insurance fraud. Police linked dirt on a shovel found at an Avondale address to a soil sample taken from the disturbed grave of Shine.

In 1939 two men, Robert McKay and James Talbot, were the architects in one of Waitakere’s, if not New Zealand’s, most unusual cases. McKay and Talbot were no strangers to the judge’s gavel in their native Australia. Having crossed the Tasman and taken possession of a shack in the then underdeveloped Piha area, a fire was to break out in the property around 1.30 am on January 12. Neighbours report awakening after hearing screams from Talbot, who exclaimed “my mate is in there!”The heat of the fire beat back any attempt to ‘rescue’ McKay, and he was

pronounced dead by Police after his charred corpse was discovered. Both men had recently updated their life insurance policies, with cover of 25,000 pounds attributed to McKay, underwritten by the Australian Mutual Provident Society. Upon formal identification of the body, investigators smelled a rat. After examining dental records, the cadaver was declared to be not that of McKay, but the corpse of a recently deceased man named Patrick Henry Shine. The property also smelled strongly of kerosene, suggesting the blaze was not

NZ WIN TOUCH WORLD CUP!

NZ sent 10 teams to the recent Touch World Cup held in Kuala Lumpur. World Cup history shows that most, if not all, grades come down to a showdown between NZ and Australia with the latter usually coming away with the spoils! Wins in Touch against our neighbours are as rare as a Wallaby win against the All Blacks! This year the NZ team put on a convincing display in the Championship final winning 9-5 over Australia, which in Touch terms is a good old fashioned hiding! The tournament ran for six days and we played in temperatures as high as 50 degrees. Hence athletes needed to be in top condition. I was fortunate to pick up the award of “Most Valuable Player” at the tournament. After training and playing for the last 18 months this was probably the best and biggest win for me in the sport. Having my family there to be involved in the journey just made lifelong memories for us, adding to the history I made with my team mates. It was just an amazing experience we’ll never forget! Is it time to hang the boots up? No way! I am now 49 years of age, so yes, maybe one more campaign to get past the 50 mark? Since I was interviewed in the previous

edition of OHHCNews I’ve had local Heights neighbours say hello and wish me luck. Since I’ve been back some ask how we went. The interest locals are showing makes me appreciate even more the wonderful community I live in. Our local school, Western Heights, where I help coach teams when needed, thought our success in KL was pretty cool. Thank you my friends in HH for being such good and supportive neighbours!

Lili Rudin Born July 1912

Married four times; two children, four grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren. How I made it to 100: I left school when I was 12, but I traveled the world, and that was my real education. People interested me then and still do. That’s why I go out every day and mingle: I go shopping and take exercise classes. Plus, I see members of my family almost every single day. I remain very curious about life, and if something new happens, I want to be involved in it. I want to live another 50 years—after all, there are still so many countries I need to see. Lili’s best live-long advice: Do something interesting every day; otherwise you disintegrate

Born in 1940, Nathanael Reid is no ordinary guy. At 19 he was flying commercial airplanes for Air Canada, having been trained by an RAF trainer. He’s even owned his own company flying amphibious planes! Married at 24 to his lovely wife Sue, he did a stint with Air NZ and then moved into various management positions with a number of NZ companies. At 60 Nat and Sue were looking forward to exciting times in retirement. But suddenly Nat’s health took a turn for the worse. He was diagnosed with something called spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6) It’s extremely rare. When Nat was first diagnosed, only two kiwis had the disease. It gets worse over time and there is no cure. The symptoms? It affects speech, walking, balance, all the muscles, particularly the muscles of the throat. Nat now can’t eat normally and has to be fed intravenously in the stomach. How on earth have they made it through? Both Sue and Nat have a strong faith. When asked how their faith has helped them Sue replied “When I married Nat in Scotland at 20, I took our vows very seriously. I promised to

Back then, in the church when we were married, the vows were untested. Now we are living out the reality! When you go through deep waters (the Bible calls it ‘the Valley of the Shadow of Death’ in Psalm 23) you find out what you are made of, your stickability, and your depth of love. Nat’s disease has deepened our love for one another. It’s also been a test of our guts and stamina. In the last 10 years, Nat has nearly died three times, going blue in the face and each time we’ve cried out to Jesus and the choking has stopped. Nat would not be here if it wasn’t for Jesus. Really, our faith in Jesus has been the glue that’s held us together and got us through.” HHCNews: Nat and Sue, thank you so much for sharing your journey with us and for your vulnerability. We first got to know Julian through the new spaper which he owns and publishes in West A uckland. We observed that he had a lot of energy and had a great personality so when the time came for us to sell our home, we asked him to help us. Our plan was to sell up in A uckland and move to the regions. Julian went the extra mile w ith us, coming to our home for several evenings to show us properties we could buy, even accompanying us to Whangarei one weekend to show us homes. Not many agents w ill be that dedicated. Julian helped us well before our home went to market by advising us how to best prepare it for sale, providing us w ith a clear and doable checklist of tasks to complete. Selling our home in A uckland was not easy. Although it was an executive home in perfect condition w ith no ‘issues’ in a top street, it had plaster cladding. Julian had to navigate us through the stigma many buyers have about these homes, which was not an easy thing to do. L ike a true professional, and to his credit, he persevered through a very trying sales period and in the end he achieved a terrific result for us. His marketing, video, and photography were superb. We got a great price and a short settlement, which is just what we wanted. Julian was always very honest w ith us at every point from start to finish. He can be completely trusted. I guess another thing which we really enjoyed about Julian was his great sense of humour. We had a lot of laughs along the way which helped hugely. Julian, on behalf of Lynette and myself, we want to thank you for your dedication, friendship and laughter, and professionalism. We’ve really enjoyed working w ith you! Hopefully, we can keep in contact. Thank you!

With the looming date for insulation compliance in rental properties now upon us, all rental properties should be at a minimum standard of insulation to comply with the new government regulations. Are you aware that the Healthy Homes Standard for rental properties in NZ is coming into effect 1st July 2021? This means the new standard of insulation exceeds the standard for 1st July 2019 and if you have recently ensured your rental property’s insulation is compliant, it may not be, come 2021.

There will also be new standards around heating, ventilation, moisture control, draught stopping etc. Don’t go out and buy a heat pump in a panic as this may not be necessary and won’t meet the minimum requirement to warrant your property is fully compliant with the 2021 law. If you would like some more information please feel free to give me a call and we can have a chat – No Obligations.

WINTER FOCUS at

WAITAKERE COLLEGE We’ve just finished a successful season of the musical ‘Chicago’ which involved 100+ students and staff. What a spectacle and a great opportunity to test the new sound system in our Jackson Auditorium while teaching skills both onstage and backstage. This was a highly professional and polished performance, enjoyed by over 800 people and counting toward NCEA credits for our Performing Arts Academy. We’re enjoying the new buildings we opened in 2018: a state of the art Dance/ Drama / Media Studies suite and top-end Technology workshops. This winter, you will see construction fencing on our Rathgar Rd frontage as we upgrade the entrance to Waitakere College. Our Swanson Rd pedestrian entrance gates continue to be open during this time, providing another place to drop off or pick up students. Thanks to Auckland Council, Rathgar Rd has been steadily upgraded in recent months to safely slow traffic around our schools, and to improve pedestrian crossings and bus stops. We encourage students who can walk or bike to do so, in line with a, ‘Eat Healthy, Be Active’ philosophy, that our onsite Tuckshop also adheres to.

Once again we have high numbers of winter sports teams: basketball, rugby, football and netball being most popular, with hockey, badminton and other codes also going strong. We’re always keen for locals to attend home games and support our students to success – see you here soon! In June we held a quiz night fundraiser for the Waitakere College Foundation www.wcf.nz ; info@wcf.nz This Charitable Trust supports students while they are at our school and also helps them into University and other further education including Trades apprenticeships. Coming up: 29 August 7.30pm ‘Teen Brain’ evening event for parents presented by Nathan Wallis. Tickets from Eventfinda
