THE PAINTER WHO BECAME ONE OF THE QUEEN’S FAVOURITES!

At 58, HH resident Ron Crawford is a bit of legend. In fact, in 2017 he was awarded the QSM for services to eduction. HHCNews: Ron, you’ve obvioulsy been hugely successful, not just in business, but in life. What have been the influencers in your life? Ron: My parents were a huge influence. Dad was an RSA guy and really staunch. They didn’t have a car and they had to work hard for absolutely everything. The only way to get respect from Dad was to do the hard stuff! So my parents instilled in me a great set of attitudes: work til you drop, be honest, and don’t expect anything for free!

HHCNews: You’ve built a very successful painting and decorating business with a huge staff. Tell us how you got into that? Ron: My parents set me up with the right attitudes. This is essential if you want to succeed in life. I left school at 17 and wanted to build a great future. To do my best. My first job after I left school was in retail – John Burns. Older people will remember those shops. One day I was transferred to a new John Burns shop in Mangere. It was there I met a guy who was a painter and he asked me to leave retail and come and work for him. It’s funny how random things happen that can change the whole course of a person’s life. That’s what it was like for me when I met this painter. So I left John Burns. All my mates were getting trades or going to University so I thought when the chance to become a master painter came up, I’d grab it. HHCNews: And what was the change like? Ron: I loved every bit of painting. I loved learning how to be good at it. Not just good, but masterful. The guys I first worked with had

very high standards and they wouldn’t except any second grade work. If it wasn’t perfect, it had to be done again. I thrived in these conditions. My boss was fair but firm. For me there was huge satisfaction seeing the product of all your hard work – I loved to see buildings completely transformed through hard work and clever painting, especially old villas. I was a perfectionist, and so were the guys I worked for. HHCNews: So how did you come to own a huge painting company? Ron: Within six months of joining the painters, I was asked to be a partner in the business. After 18 months I became the foreman. The rest is history. My work in education was sort of a parallel track for me. I have been the chairperson on many school boards over the last 40 years. Currently, I am the chairman of the board at Henderson Intermediate. HHCNews: If you could pass the keys of success to young people, what would you say? Ron: First, integrity is huge. Honest people do honest things. Not everyone can be a doctor or a lawyer, but everyone can be a good citizen. Seconly, never stop dreaming. Dreams are like a carrot to drive a person forward. Third, surround yourself with open and honest people. Relationships are hugely important. At the root of good relationships are good values. So be a person of high values, and surround yourself with the same.

The happier the people, the BUILDING C O M M U N I T Y HENDERSON HEIGHTS stronger the community! Researches tell that that a community is only as healthy as the people in the community are happy. If the people in a community are happy, the community will be healthy. If the people are unhappy, the community will unhealthy. Here are 3 marks of a healthy happy community.

1. Neighbours know each other There will be lots of community events happening like street parties. Neighbours will be inviting each other over to their homes for meals. You’ll know the neighbours six houses either side of your house, and the six immediately across the road. The elderly and the children will be involved and excited. Psychologists tell us that when strangers meet and interact positively, all parties increase dramatically

Page 2

in their sense of well-being. This makes sense, because we all know the feeling which comes when we make a neat new friend. 2. People are friendly and want to get to know each other When people in the community pass each other on the street or at the shops, they will at the very least smile and say “Hello! How are you?” At best they will introduce each other and chat about where they live, how long they have lived there, and so on. The conversion might end with an invite to one another’s homes. Recent research by psychology professor Barbara Fredrickson shows that even casual positive interactions with acquaintances can cause a major lift in spirits. Often, we don’t want to be the person to initiate the friendliness, but if no one initiates, then connecting with strangers will never happen. Next time you are out and about up in Henderson Heights, see if anyone says “Hello”. If no one does, take the initiative. Be the leader. Start the ball rolling.

3. Businesses network, and they are supported by the community. The businesses in the community will support each other. The networking will be strong. The names of all the plumbers, electricians, painters, fences, drain layers and other tradesman will be listed and advertised. The community will want to support their local tradesmen and women. If you are a tradesperson living in Henderson Heights, email me or phone me, and I will advertise your business. In the next issue, I will share more keys to how we can make HH a happy place!

The Gift of Gratitude Do you know the feeling of waking up in the morning and saying, “This is going to be a great day!”? Or do you experience lots of “Blue Mondays” and “Thank God it’s Friday!”

The way a day plays out is often down to something as simple as gratitude or the lack of it. Gratitude is an oldfashioned word which means noticing the good things, appreciating beauty, being thankful for little things. It makes a person smile more and frown less. It brings peace instead of worry.

Sometimes reframing our thoughts instils gratitude. For example instead of naming days as above, which conjure up images of gritting teeth and toughing it out, making us dread the day enduring it like a martyr; how about giving the days another name. You could have a Marvellous Monday, a Too Good Tuesday, a Wonderful Wednesday, a Thrilling Thursday, a Fabulous Friday, a Satisfying Saturday and a Splendid Sunday. Every now and again, I block off a day in my diary and call it by one of these names. I look forward to that day. I tell people “I’m having a “Fabulous Friday” or whatever and I plan a self-care activity or something fun or relaxing. Just renaming the day is enough to make it a 'stand out’ day in my week and give me many reasons to be thankful.

grateful for.

Cultivating a spirit of gratitude is a gift – and as a gift, it can’t be kept; it has to be given away. Imagine the difference you could make to someone’s day by your smile, your encouraging words, your positive thoughts, and your genuine expression of thanks. Mother Teresa said,

“Spread love everywhere you go.

Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.”

Recently an elderly man wrote to me after reading the article on “Keeping Love Alive” to tell me his story. Last year he nursed his wife through a short illness before she passed away. Instead of feeling sorry for himself, he was grateful for the time they had together enjoying their favourite beaches in their campervan. When he became ill after his wife’s passing, he was full of praise for the hospital services. He could have chosen to be a bitter, lonely old man, but he decided to get involved in clubs and social activities and at 87 years young, he is continuing to spread the gift of gratitude. It is possible to be thankful in every circumstance and situation. Notice I did not say to be thankful for every circumstance and situation. It would be cruel to suggest that a person going through great pain or stress should be thankful for that and it would be heinous to suggest that someone be thankful that their child has died or that their partner is abusing them. However, it is possible to be thankful for supportive friends and family, to be grateful for a meal delivered, to praise the dedication of the medical team or the police force, to feel the satisfaction of eating a nutritious meal, to enjoy washing in clean water, to appreciate having a home and clothes.

Many things we take for granted or expect as our right, but taking a moment to think of others who may not have these things, to reflect on the simple blessings we enjoy each day raises the awareness that we have many things to be

people who are thinking of topping themselves.

I was reading in the last issue about loneliness in HH. My opinion about how to combat loneliness is having a strong family ties. The love of family brings joy, hope, and security to everyone. In any situation bad or good, you have someone to lean on. Family could be real friends as well. It’s timely topic coz depression and suicide is real. Bourdain and Kate Spade, Robin Williams, etc. Up at Henderson Heights I know there is loneliness because many of the houses seem so lifeless. The curtains are drawn, the shutters are closed, the gates are locked, and no seems to come and go. I wonder what is going on in those homes? What is the mental state of those inside? I am come from a strong loving family. I guess the place to start in HH is by making contact with our neighbours right beside us, and those across the street. Someone has to take the initiative to reach out coz that is how loneliness is broken. I realise that many people don’t have family like I do so we must be family for them. That how I see it. ____________________________

Sophie, Summerland Drive.

Jeffrey from the Filipines. Suicide. Julian, thank you for your paper. It’s always a good read and so good to be kept up to date with local news and local people. I wonder if you could do an article about suicide. I know people in HH who have sadly gone this way and I wonder how as a community we can help

____________________________ Editors note: A suicidal person may not ask for help, but that doesn’t mean that help isn’t wanted. People who take their lives don’t want to die—they just want to stop hurting. Suicide prevention starts with recognizing the warning signs and taking them seriously. If you think a friend or family member is considering suicide, you might be afraid to bring up the subject. But talking openly about suicidal thoughts and feelings can save a life. Warning signs in teens Warning signs that a teen may be considering suicide: 1. Change in eating and sleeping habits 2. Withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities 3. Violent or rebellious behavior, running away 4. Drug and alcohol use 5. Unusual neglect of personal appearance 6. Persistent boredom, difficulty concentrating, or a decline in the quality of schoolwork 7. Frequent complaints about physical symptoms, often related to emotions, such as stomachaches, headaches, fatigue, etc. 8. Not tolerating praise or rewards

SECRET BOYHOOD DREAM BECOMES A REALITY. HH resident Shane Muller, who lives in Highfields Terrace, secret boyhood dream became a reality – he always wanted to own a Ford Mustang and now he does! And it’s not just a Mustang but it’s a customised 2017 5.0L V8 fitted with Roush side and hood air vents, Roush rear spoiler, 19 inch rims, Roush axle-back exhaust tips and black on black racing stripes. If the All Blacks were a muscle car then I think this is what it would look like.

Over the years of working and supporting family life, you get to the point where the girls have now grown up living their own lives, so you have a bit more time on my hands. This is when you want to do something that will give you a bit of excitement and a lot of enjoyment, which is when my desire for a Mustang really started to grow. So last October I went out and bought myself a new Ford GT Mustang as a birthday gift. While the girls just thought their dad was having a midlife crisis, it was my siblings who were most surprised. They couldn’t believe someone who never showed any interest in cars suddenly turned up with this black beast of a sports car. To be honest, I would rather have the old classic shape Mustang, but the old ones don’t have all the bells and whistles which the my new one has, it’s pretty incredible.

We have a small Bach in Raglan so I drive down there quite often, and yes, I open it up a bit on those back country roads. It’s great fun and has brought a lot of joy to me and my family. As they say, you only live once so do something that excites you, I highly recommend it!” Shane is keen to meet with other muscle car owners one Saturday morning to raise funds for children with needs. Children and adults can go for a drive around the block in one of the muscle cars for a gold coin. If you own a muscle car, and want to join in, let us know so we can organise something. Good on you Shane. Awesome work mate!

VOUCHER

“My oldest brother” says Shane “had a jet black 1969 Mustang when I was still at school. It was the old classic shape that became such an icon for muscle cars, particularly after the Steve McQueen movie Bullitt, it was awesome. Just seeing this car and admiring it so much planted a seed that one day I would own my own Mustang. My siblings are staunch fans of Australia’s Super Car racing, and like any typical West Aucklander you either supported Ford or Holden. I didn’t really join in with their love of cars, nor had any interest following motor sport, but I always had a soft spot for my brother’s Mustang, which was a real head turner.

with Haley Rankin: Maori are not the indigenous people of New Zealand Maori as indigenous, which was why he believed no other Maori was prepared to speak publicly on the issue, Mr Rankin said. Details of much of the country’s past was being concealed by academic historians. “I would say it’s a conspiracy. They are worried that their own research will be exposed so they have worked hard to ridicule and suppress any Maori history which disagrees

Maxwell C Hill and Gary Cook, published earlier this year, detailed evidence the authors said convinced them that Greek-Egyptians and others sailed to and settled New Zealand long before the arrival of Maori. The 378page book showed ancient maps detailing the coastlines of Australia and New Zealand and first drawn before the birth of Christ. Skeletons, rock carvings, stone buildings and monuments and oral tradition all attest to people of European origin living here for centuries before the arrival of Polynesians, the authors said.

Henderson Heights is part of New Zealand and so the history of NZ and HH history are inseparable. As such, on the history page of this issue, I want to reprint an interesting article by Maori leader David Rankin. He claims Maori were definitely not the first residents of New Zealand. In printing this, I want to start the discussion.

The Grounds Eatery Seeks To Revolutionise Family Dining

HHCNews: Mike, you are the head chef at The Grounds Eatery.

What drives you? Mike: “For me, one of my drivers for wanting to partner up with Ben Bayley (executive chef and co-owner) is that I wanted to bring family dining back into vogue. In most restaurants, kids sit at one table with a certain kind of food, and parents at another. I don’t like that. I think they should all be together. I love working with children because they are not just transparent and fun, but brutally honest. They will tell you if the food tastes like crap. Ben and I want to lead a revolution back to children and their parents dining at the same table. We are on a crusade to make families stronger using food to do it! For these reasons”, says Mike Shatura, “The Grounds is such an exciting venue and place to work! Ben and I have a much bigger purpose than just cooking amazing healthy food. I am very emotionally involved in this

Tell us about that. Ben: “I brought Mike with me when I started this business so that I could spend more time with my best friend. Mike is a phenomenally hard worker and really, he’s the patriarch of this restaurant. He looks after everyone, so I try and give him as much air time as possible. I hope Mike and I will be together forever. He’s such a beautiful human being. For me, he’s the real hero of the business because he trains all the younger guys and takes people under his wing. He’s the ultimate caring person.” HHCNews: If you have read this article, it’s so worth coming down to this Eatery not just to be part of the revolution, and to meet Ben and Mike, but to experience just how different this amazing place is! Really, West Auckland is so lucky these guys chose us! Come!

Single email connects lovers after 31 years apart! (PART TWO) The ultimate travel story! Ian and Lynette are Kiwis in their 50’s and they are in love. Their home on Leafield Crescent is their castle. They were teenage lovers once and for 30 years they went their separate ways through travel and in those 30 years never saw each other. This is the story of how they finally got back together in their 50’s and married! Part 1 was printed in the May edition of OHHCNews. This month is part 2. Ian: I was married at 26 for 13yrs and had two beautiful children. A girl and boy. Things unfortunately didn’t work out and we eventually divorced. I made a life for myself else where but it was around 15 years before I decided to move back to NZ. My father passed away and there was a lot going on with the family business. OHHCnews: How soon after the end of your last relationship did you get together with Lynette? Ian: Lynette was 50 when we got together and I was 54. We married in 2011. We’ve been together for 7 years now. Lynette and I had had 31 years apart. OHHCnews: If you had life to do over again, would you like to have married way back in your 20’s when you were young lovers? Ian: Of course, but maybe back then we were not ready. Lynette: Absolutely. I think the love we had for each other back then was sweet and simple, and uncomplicated. Our love came naturally, whereas our other relationships were not like that. The only right motive is heart felt love. A sense of the relationship being right. Of finding ones other half. OHHCnews: According to Greek

mythology, humans were originally created with four arms, four legs and a head with two faces. Fearing their power, Zeus split them into two separate parts, condemning them to spend their lives in search of their other halves. Is this what you mean?

and that is where I had planned to retire. Lynette hated the quiet and isolation down there so we rented it out and purchased another home in Henderson. That is how we ended up back here in Leafield Crescent.

Lynette: Yes, that’s it. Exactly.

I am the same when it comes to being in love with Lynette. She makes me feel alive and energetic. I believe I am lucky I am to have her as my wife.

Ian: The co-incidence was this – I took a punt with an old email address of Lynette’s sister and I sent her an email. Really, I didn’t think she would receive it. Lynette: I was thinking about him too. Then one day my sister rang me and said Ian wants your email address, are you happy with me to give it to him and I said YES! I received an email from Ian the next day. OHHCnews: That email was the crucial factor in your re-connection! OHHCnews: What was it like seeing each other again. Was there an instant love inferno? Lynette: Ian had lost all his hair! I looked pretty much the same. The love was still there. It was meant to be. It soon grew back into real love. We are so happy together now.

We promote dog and cat food without preservatives, additives and artificial colouring.

Did you KNOW ?

The first Henderson volunteer fire brigade was formed in 1926, it lasted a few months. In 1929 the present brigade was formed, but it wasn’t until March 1932 that the first appliance was purchased (a 1916 Chase, from the Newmarket Fire Brigade) Prior to 1922 the nearest Doctor was in Auckland and later Avondale. The first Doctor in Henderson was based in Lincoln Road, 1922. Another Doctor was listed by 1927. The 1927 telephone list was: 3 general stores, 2 butchers, 4 carriers, 1 motor garage, 1 draper and tailor, 1 dentist, 2 land agents, 1 chemist, 1 vet, 2 doctors. The first bus service to Auckland was begun in 1928 and until the concrete road (Great North Rd was completed had to run through Glen Eden.) Henderson’s first permanent policeman was appointed in 1924. Prior to this the nearest policeman was at Avondale.

MENTAL FLOSS! More advice from Centurions 1. “Even if you feel hatred, keep it to yourself. Don’t hurt other people for any reason.” 2. “Don’t ever give up on love.” 3. “Nobody else controls you.” 4. “Make time to cry.” 5. “Travel while you’re young and able. Don’t worry about the money, just make it work. Experience is far more valuable than money will ever be.” 6. “Don’t compare. You’ll never be happy with your life. The grass is always greener.”

HENDERSON HEIGHTS CULTURE “I am a Maori, and I want to break the mould!”

Rachel (left) Rochelle (right) staff at coffix

HH resident Rochelle Parata-Hohaia, who lives on San Marino Drive, has strong views about being a Maori. “When I was young” says Rochelle, “I worked hard to work out my identity and who I was. Yes, I knew I was a Maori but deep inside I wanted to break the mould. What mould? I had a lot of extended family who had never realised their potential and never done anything with their lives. I didn’t want to be like them!” Rochelle continues “As I looked around, I could see most Maori were living permanantly on the dole or the benefit and they didn’t know any better. For the few that had jobs, they were always changing them. Stability seemed like a far off reality. My parents, who are fully Maori, were oh so different. They didn’t want me to fit the classic Maori profile (CMP). Just what is the CMP? It’s like this - if you were a Maori you were a criminal, violent, in prison, poor, dishonest, lazy, head strong, and dependent. You consumed taxes, but you didn’t pay any. You felt like you were entitled to everything for free. Who wants to be like that!? I certainly didn’t and nor did my Maori family. I want to leave my children a legacy, to model what a decent hard working honest human being was like. In this way I could

give to my children what my parents gave to me. They were the very opposite of the CMP! I guess one of my other drivers is to inspire other Maori to get out of the rut and to break the mould too. I reasoned that if I could do it, they could too. I love my job down at Coffix in Henderson making the best $2.50 coffees in the West! Come and see me and let’s chat. I would really like that.

Exciting Language Learning …at Henderson Intermediate School!

The recent trip to China by 23 students and 3 staff members from Henderson Intermediate was another great success. Every year at this time a group of student gets to go to China for 14 days. This is part of Fudan University, Confucius Institute Partner, and is funded by Hanban. Every student passed the Mandarin YCT Level One Examination held at Fudan Univeristy while they were in China.

We also have a Samoan Language Unit for students who want their learning delivered in Samoan. This year has seen us add for students , the option of Korean. There are two groups of students now learning Korean.” Deputy Principal Debbie Wylde said.

Jo Carter, International Student Director, describes this annual trip as just another wonderful life changing experience for students from the School. “ It is wonderful for students in both countries to learn about each other’s cultures.” Jo said. All students at Henderson Intermediate School, get the opportunity to learn Mandarin. Three students recently went to Auckland University to take part in the Auckland Regional Mandarin Language Competition. These students all did extremely well with being placed 3RD Equal in the Years 7 – 10 category. The students were Stephanie Jordan, Azariah Clarke and Rachel Birch. “ Language learning is hugely exciting for students. Learning a second language enhances student learning across all other areas of learning. Our students are very lucky as they get to have such a great selection of languages that they can learn. As well as Mandarin, all students learn basic te reo Māori. We have a Bilingual Māori Unit where students can be either bilingual or full immersion Māori.
