Wedding Planning 101 Okay, okay, so you’ve been to your local bookstore, surveyed the rather large collection of wedding books and wondered how anyone even gets through this whole planning process… and why all those wedding planning books are so thick!! This is completely understandable – it is a bit on the daunting side. Planning a wedding is definitely not something you can throw together in a matter of days, and there will certainly be quite a few projects along the way to keep you busy. But these ‘projects’ can actually be fun – a lot of fun! And with a plan, you may even find yourself looking forward to them.
Photograph by Carl Christensen
the plan 1.) Most importantly, keep things SIMPLE. There will always be another photographer to interview, another centerpiece idea, another wedding favor website. When you find something that “clicks” with you, go with it! You’ve just crossed off one more thing your wedding checklist. 2.) Decide on a good filing system before you begin. Order a box of file folders or an accordion file with multiple sections to hold all of your contracts, notes, etc. If you’re really ambitious, consider investing $20-30 in a labeler – it keeps things especially neat and organized. As you go along, designate one folder for each aspect of your planning — caterer, rehearsal dinner, guest list, etc. 3.) Get Started! Begin tackling items on your wedding checklist. Look at the first list of to-do’s in the “12 Months Before” section. Don’t try to do all of these at once – take one at a time and consider putting the others on your calendar so that you know they’ll get taken care of, just not all today! 4.) Don’t be afraid to delegate. Family members and attendants will more than likely be completely willing to help take on some of the planning tasks – if they offer, take them up on it! If there are parts of the planning that you know you don’t need to be (or care to be) directly involved in, ask for help. 5.) Have FUN! While some tasks will take longer than others, there will be others that will balance out all of the hard work – treating yourself to a day at the spa for example Also, consider subscribing to one or more bridal magazines – when you think you’ve run out of wedding ideas, these glossy guides are a great pick-me up. And lastly, 6.) Don’t worry that you won’t possibly be able to do all of these things… Everything will get done, in due time, and you’ll see all of your hard work pay off when things really start to come together. Your wedding day will be a blast! *Article reprinted with permission from www.littleweddingguide.com

Choosing a Wedding Date There are so many factors that can go into selecting a wedding date, but at the end of the day you and your fiancÊ should choose the time of year and date that just feels right. Perhaps it’s the day you met, or another date that holds special meaning. TIP: While Saturdays are generally the most popular day of the week for weddings, you may also want to consider booking a Sunday afternoon or Friday evening wedding. Because there is such a demand for Saturday evening dates (especially during wedding season), those days are generally more expensive to book, and vendors may not be as willing to offer any kind of discounts for their services. Also note that having a wedding over a long weekend (Labor Day or Memorial Day weekend, etc.) can drive up prices as well since you may have to pay waitstaff, hotel employees or other vendors more for working over a holiday.
Photograph by Carl Christensen
First, start narrowing down potential choices by answering the following questions: • Which year do you plan to get married in – this year, two years from now? • Which season do you and your fiancé like best? • Is there a time of year that may be easier for a majority of your wedding guests to book travel and attend your wedding? • What day of the week do you envision your wedding taking place on? A daytime, or an evening wedding? Here are some ideas to help narrow the choice of season:
Winter Weddings
d Incorporate festive greens, ornaments or holiday lights into your wedding decor for a warm, romantic atmosphere
d Use candles at your ceremony or reception Spring Weddings
2 An early spring wedding when everything is just beginning to bloom is a
wonderful symbolic start to your new life together 2 Add extra touches of fresh flowers or greens throughout the wedding location 2 Consider serving light, healthy food to your guests to mark the arrival of spring
Summer Weddings
4 Have a wedding in the mountains, by the beach or under a tent at a private estate 4 If you want to create a more casual (but still elegant) atmosphere, a shady, relaxed wedding can do just the trick 4 Offer abundant fresh fruit, grilled fish or other summertime treats to your guests
Fall Weddings
n Incorporate rich, warm colors into the ceremony and reception n Use foliage, pumpkins or other autumn decorations n Look for a venue that has a wood-burning fireplace, or use candles to add even more warmth to the season

The Initial Concept For Your Wedding
Photograph by Nature’s Images by Design
The first stages of planning a wedding will inevitably seem like a challenge with so many things to plan and organize. Before contacting wedding vendors or venues, though, take some time to brainstorm and jot down some initial wedding ideas and/ or wedding themes that you envision for the big day. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild at this point. Whether you have a specific “theme” in mind or not, one thing that will help tie everything together throughout the planning process is to decide on your wedding colors – this will of course be influenced by the time of year (a spring garden wedding might inspire green tones while a winter wedding silver or gold), but selecting a color or two that you feel really speaks to you will also help you out with choosing flowers, bridesmaid dresses and decor. You may also want to come up with an overall style idea for your wedding: “simple chic”, “eco-friendly”, “old hollywood”, etc. This will really help narrow down the wide range of wedding ideas out there into something much more manageable. Once you have a basic concept for the big day, other details will begin to fall into place and you can really start to get organized with your wedding planning. Generally speaking, different wedding planning tasks will fall into a timeline that you can of course adjust depending on your own schedule and needs. You can refer to our wedding checklist to guide you through your own planning process. For most brides and grooms, choosing a wedding date and reception venue is normally on the top of the wedding planning list, followed by choosing a wedding dress and thinking about the inital guest list. Attending a bridal show or two in the early stages is also a good idea – the winter and spring seasons are generally the best time of the year to find shows in your area.
Most importantly, keep things simple, and enjoy the journey!

a handmade wedding story Elizabeth from The PeaPickin Heart
“As is the case with most little girls, I grew up dreaming of my wedding day.”
Of course, over the years, my visions of the big day evolved and changed as my insight of the world around me grew. And as most young women do, I came to appreciate the sentiment behind hand-creating something special that will evoke meaningful memories for years to come. When the time came to begin preparing for our wedding, my then-fiancé, David, and I knew that however our wedding day turned out, it would be tailor-made to us as a couple. I’m a firm believer that marriage is about two people who treasure one another enough to commit to spending their lives together; not about the latest store-bought trend or how much money was spent on the chairs. Every detail of our day was handmade either by me, David, or the talented crafters of Etsy. It was custom and unique while remaining cost effective. What we spent on the custom-made goods, we saved by making lots of things from scratch.
Our wedding took place at the Whitefield Chapel in Savannah, GA. This beautiful vintage venue needed very little decoration so all we added were burlap and lace pew bows and grapevine wreaths adorned with burlap roses - all made by me, as well as candelabras and candles for the windows and altar area. My gown, veil, garter and necklace were made by Etsy sellers, as well as my flower girl’s dress and crocheted bolero. Our ring bearer carried the antique Bible used in my parent’s wedding as his “pillow” wrapped in burlap and lace and strung from my bouquet were tiny photos of my and David’s parents and grandparents. We stitched together our programs with burlap and cardstock and our guests were served hot cocoa with mini homemade pie pops as a pre-ceremony snack. Our reception was a southern buffet at Paula Deen’s Lady and Sons restaurant in downtown Savannah where we toasted with glass-bottled Coke’s and danced to bluegrass music. David and I made and canned peach butter during the summer to give as gifts to our guests. We really poured our hearts into this event to make it personal and memorable to all who joined us.
To us, a great wedding isn’t about choosing the perfect china or stressing over a seating chart - it’s about showing who you are as a couple. Whether that means writing your own vows and playing the best of Dean Martin in front of your closest friends and family at a tiny chapel or hosting a high-end event to be attended by hundreds, you have to remember what brought you to this place. It wasn’t aisle runners or big paper bells, it was the love found by two people about to embark on a lifelong journey together. The creative process of wedding planning involving months of web searches and blog reviews inspired the birth of my Etsy shop, The PeaPickin Heart. The name of the shop was given to me indirectly from my mother. As kids, whenever my sister and I would create something special for her, her surprised response would be “Bless your pea-pickin hearts!” This phrase always made us feel like we accomplished something by making her happy. This relates directly to the philosophy of my shop. Our mission is to provide quality, handmade items to those looking to create a unique, custom event that’s all their own.

Elizabeth’s Wedding Tips: • Don’t do something just because everyone else is doing it. • Find things that have meaning to you and your fiancé and showcase them throughout the day. My husband wore his grandfather’s tie pin; we played the theme song to Forrest Gump in the processional since we got engaged in the Savannah square where the movie was filmed. Make it personal. • Don’t be afraid to buck tradition, your wedding can be anything you want it to be – just remember what it’s all about. • You don’t have to go in debt to make your wedding beautiful, find ideas of how you can make things yourself – this also falls into the category of making it meaningful, you made it with your own two hands. Bonus points for not spending your rent payment on it. • When in doubt, search Etsy! Endless creativity and talented artisans abound.

Wedding Location After choosing a wedding date, selecting a wedding location is the next major decision you’ll make in your early wedding planning stages. Again, this place should make you and your fiancé both feel comfortable and “at home.”
Photograph by Carl Christensen
Here are more questions to help narrow down your decision:
• If you’re planning a summer wedding, will you have the wedding ceremony outdoors? The wedding reception? Is a beach wedding your dream setting? (Or a park, castle, etc.?) • Are you planning to have your ceremony in a Church or other religious setting? If so, be sure to choose a reception site that makes sense for you and your guests. If there is excessive travel time from one venue to the next, consider providing a shuttle bus between sites. • Choose at least two or three top sites, as availability may vary depending on your wedding date. If you’re really set on a specific venue, you may have to be a bit more flexible with the date — and planning early will definitely ensure more choices.
Additional questions to ask in the case of ceremonies taking place in a house of worship:
• Are any marriage courses or other courses required of the couple prior to the wedding day? • Will the venue be available a day or two before the wedding for a ceremony rehearsal? • In the case of warm-weather weddings, is air conditioning available? (Is this included in the reservation price?) • Are the any restrictions for musical pieces that can be performed? • Can outside musicians be hired for the wedding?
As you visit each potential site, record each of the following: • Site Name • Phone Number • Maximum Number of Guests • Reservation and Cancellation Policies
• Contact Name • Website and Email Address • Deposit Amount Required • Restrictions (if any)
Tip: If you are planning to have the wedding outdoors, make sure to confirm with the
venue that there is a backup plan for holding the wedding indoors in the case of inclement weather. If you are planning a park wedding etc. on your own, make sure that you have your own backup plan in the case of bad weather – whether moving it to a relative’s home indoors, a local hotel, etc. For reception sites, also inquire as to whether there is a preferred vendor list available for clients – if so, ask for one even if you don’t end up booking the site. This is a good way to begin researching caterers, musicians and other local professionals for your wedding.
