To this end, this paper is a broad ranging review of the evidence and best-practice, with the use of case studies, relating to a variety of pedagogical and administrative elements of primary school practice, including: • Literacy strategies • Behaviour and attendance programmes • Co-educational roles for parents • Innovative class structures • Offering a variety of additional support • More flexible curricula • Holistic transition strategies
As such, this paper provides a fresh way of considering primary school reform. It provides an insight into schools’ practice for o practitioners to consider, and raises a number of extremely interesting issues for the Government to address as part of its social inclusion and personalisation agendas.

Fade or flourish: how primary schools can build on children’s early progress
The government has rightly invested a significant amount of resources into improving the early years’ experiences of the most socio-economically disadvantaged children in the country. Yet evidence suggests that some of the benefits of pre-school can be lost during later childhood if they are not consolidated. In the light of this research, we explain how primary schools can play a crucial role in sustaining the social and academic gains provided by early years interventions.
