THE BONNYCASTLE TOUR This 60 minute program gives the class a chance to come face to face with Soldier's in Her Majesty's Army of 1867. Queen Victoria's Army was the beginning of what we recognize as the “Modern Army”. Surrounded by the Fort Henry Guard in Infantry Red and Artillery Blue uniforms, they will be put through their paces with an in-depth expedition of the Citadel of Upper Canada. This guided visit will provoke curiosity by explaining and demonstrating how soldiers, families and children lived and worked in the year our nation came into being.

VICTORIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM This 90 minute program gives the class a chance to become a soldier in Her Majesty's Army. After an Orientation Tour of the facility the class is inducted into the Service and swears allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Victoria.

Lieutenant Colonel Sir Richard Bonnycastle, Royal Engineers.

Queen Victoria's Army after the Crimean War was the beginning of what we recognize as the “Modern Army”. Soldiers had to be able to read and write in order to get promoted, and Officers were expected to earn their rank, rather than buy them. As such, the Army took care in educating both the soldier's children, and the soldiers themselves.

The Schoolroom The Schoolmaster/Schoolmistress will conduct a lesson which graphically illustrates the difference between school then and now. The lesson plan is not designed to teach your class the seven times-tables or test their knowledge of the British Monarchy (although they must know who the Queen is in 1867), rather it will teach them how children in our school were expected to behave and what sorts of things they were expected to learn. Please note: Based on availability and resources, the Victorian Schoolroom session may be replaced with a Barracks Room inspection. Your group of recruits will be placed in front of their bunks for inspection by the Captain of the Fort Henry Guard, who will ensure the troops have prepared the Barrack Room to the standards of the British Army. Both modules offer a look into the life of a British Soldier, circa 1867.

GARRISON LIFE PROGRAM The Garrison Life program is three hours in length. Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada provides the opportunity for your group/class to become a soldier in Her Majesty's Army. After an orientation tour of the site, the class is inducted into the Service and swears allegiance to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria's Army after the Crimean War was the beginning of what we recognize as the “Modern Army”. Wearing the Infantry Red and Artillery Midnight Blue, your class will be put through their paces with basic foot drill and then put to work. Soldiers had to be able to read and write in order to get promoted, and Officers were expected to earn their rank, rather than simply purchasing it. As such, the Army took care in education the soldier's children, and the soldiers themselves. For thirty minutes, the class will sit in school and learn what they, as soldiers must know, if they expect to move up in the ranks in the British Army. Your group of recruits will be placed in front of their bunks for inspection by the Officer of the day, who will ensure the troops have prepared the Barrack room to the standards of the British Army. Following the tour, muster and schoolroom lesson, the Squads will then “Fall In” on the Parade Square for final inspection and will receive their discharge papers at the end of the program for their resumption of civilian life.

A SOLDIER'S OVERNIGHT No classroom experience will equal the excitement and fun of the Soldiers' Overnight Program. It is by far the premier learning experience we have to offer. Immerse your students into the lifestyle of Fort Henry's garrison, exposing them to actual routines of the 1860's. In essence, your students will become soldiers for 21 hours at the Citadel of Upper Canada. Your class will be provided with an Interpreter to teach and guide your class in their experience as soldiers in the British Army in 1867. The following is a list of activities that your students will participate in. These will be much more in depth to allow your students to immerse themselves in the living history and fully appreciate the experiential learning.

• Guided Tour • Issued uniforms • Muster • Schoolroom • Fatigues • Barrack Room Inspection • Ghost Tour • Flag Raising and Lowering • History Hunt /Historical Detectives Duration: Day 1 - arrive at noon Day 2 - depart at 9:00am Minimum number per group: 15 participants Maximum number: 57 participants NOTE: Because of the nature of this program, we must insist that you provide at least a 10:1 student supervisor ratio; male and female. From 8:00 pm on day one, your class will be under teacher supervision. Fort Henry can provide some historic materials for this period, but it is essentially geared for “Quiet Time” before lights out. Feel free to bring cards, dominoes, and draughts (checkers) for each Barrack Room. Teachers might also want to supply paper so that the soldiers may write home. *Separate male and female quarters are provided for this program.

REPASTS Fort Henry National Historic Site does not have historic cooking facilities for modern day usage. The facilities we do offer are limited to a capacity for heating rather than cooking food (appliances available for use are: a regular size fridge, no freezer; oven; microwave), a sink and counter space is also offered for use. We do not offer crockery, pots & serving items for food you produce. It is recommended that the food be served from the Bakery and then eaten in the Schoolroom or Barrack Rooms to keep in character with the program. Due to health guidelines and to preserve as much as possible an “historic flavour”, if you choose to bring your own meals we recommend that the menu be among the following items: LUNCH: Bag lunch or canned goods which can be heated & served in your own vessels (soups, stews etc.), breads, butter, pre-packaged biscuits, milk, tea, coffee, juice. SUPPER: Canned goods which can be heated and served in your own vessels (soup, stew etc), cheese, raw vegetables and fruit, milk, tea, coffee, juice, bread, butter, pre-packaged biscuits. SNACK: Pre-packaged biscuits, milk and/or juice. BREAKFAST: Porridge, cold cereal, oatmeal, bread, cheese, tea, coffee, milk, juice and preserves.

FOOD SERVICES By advanced reservation only, Fort Henry's on-site food concessionaire can provide food services at additional fee; we hope you will avail yourself of at least some of them. We strongly recommend that you opt for the COMMANDANT'S MESS DINNER for both the food & ambiance. A copy of the menu selections and price list is attached.

COMMANDANTS MESS DINNER: Interpreters will assist your class in becoming Officers in Her Majesty's Service for the course of the meal. The contrast between their lives during the day as soldiers and how they are treated as Officers, provide students with a graphic lesson about Victorian Society. Mess traditions will be followed; proper etiquette observed and one student will be selected as Commandant, with an Interpreter/Adjutant acting as his/her guide through the dinner. The Interpreters will help the rest of the class behave like Officers & Gentlemen in a ninety minute role playing session, which will greatly enhance their visit and be one of their most lasting memories of “The Regiment”.
