MAYOR’S MESSAGE/CONTENTS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Dear Residents, On behalf of Woodstock City Council, I am pleased to present to you the summer 2014 edition of the Recreation and Leisure Guide. We are an active community that is fortunate to have access to a widening diversity of recreational and leisure choices right here at home. Whether you are appreciating one of Woodstock’s beautiful off road wooded trails, the Skate Park, tennis court or parks, there is ample opportunity to get outside. Another way to become active is to participate in one of Woodstock’s many recreational programs. The following pages are filled with programs and classes geared to fit any lifestyle or age group. From swimming lessons, camps, to art class and reading clubs, we have it covered. We are continually working to develop our programs and services to meet the needs of our community. I encourage you to look through this guide and participate in something that you enjoy doing, or challenge yourself or your family to try something new! Pat Sobeski Mayor

LEARN TO SWIM PRESCHOOL
PRESCHOOL E
Give your child a head start learning to swim. The City of Woodstock Learn to Swim Program develops an appreciation and healthy respect for the water before kids get in too deep. In our basic aquatic progressions we work to ensure 3–5 year olds become comfortable in the water and have fun acquiring and developing a foundation of water skills. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all preschool levels.
PRESCHOOL A
PARENT AND TOT Spend quality time with your child while you both have fun, learn and socialize. Through structured in-water interaction between parent and child, we stress the importance of play in developing water-positive attitudes and skills. We provide Lifesaving Society Water Smart® tips on keeping your child safe in any aquatic setting. Certified instructors provide guidance and answers to your questions. Activities and progressions are based on child development. Please register in the level appropriate for your child’s age: 6–12 months, 12–24 months or 2–3 years.

ARBOR DAY/EMERALD ASH BORER TREE PLANTING CEREMONY Each year Woodstock celebrates Arbor Day by planting trees at a preselected school in our community. Students, teachers, parents, local community groups and City staff join together to help plant a variety of trees and shrubs.
PEST ALERT: EMERALD ASH BORER (AGRILUS PLANIPENNIS) S-Shaped Tunnels
Arbor Day originated in Nebraska in 1872 where a day was set aside and over a million trees were planted. This idea quickly spread to neighbouring states and to Canada. Today we still celebrate by planting trees each spring in Woodstock.
Larva
Do your part to green up Woodstock by participating in Arbor day activities by planting a tree at your residence.
THE CITY BEAUTIFUL AWARDS The City Beautiful Awards were established to give recognition to those private, institutional and corporate citizens who have taken the time to beautify and maintain their properties thereby contributing to a more attractive neighbourhood and community.
D-shaped Emergence Hole
Adult
Actual Size 8.5–14mm
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a highly destructive insect pest of ash trees. Native to eastern Asia, this pest was first discovered in Canada and the U.S. in 2002. The EAB has killed millions of ash trees in Southwestern Ontario, Michigan and surrounding states, and poses a major economic and environmental threat to urban and forested areas in both countries. The EAB attacks and kills all species of ash (except Mountain ash which is not a true ash). How does the EAB spread?
Eligibility Eligibility is based solely on the property entered/nominated being within the City of Woodstock limits and visibility of same from an adjoining municipal street or streets. Properties may be entered by the owner or nominated by an outside party; all entries subject to verification by the Awards Committee.
While the EAB can fly up to several kilometres, another significant factor contributing to its spread is the movement of firewood, nursery stock, trees, logs, lumber, wood with bark attached and wood or bark chips.
Judging • Judging will be based on the following criteria: • originality of garden landscape design; • plant material; • maintenance and vigor of plant material and beds; • overall effect.
Signs of infestation Tree decline, including: • thinning crown • diminished density of leaves • evidence of adult beetle feeding on leaves • long shoots growing from the trunk or branches • vertical cracks in the trunk • small D-shaped emergence holes • S-shaped tunnels under the bark filled with fine sawdust
Tree Decline
Awards in the form of plaques will be given to the Best of Class and Runner-up in the following categories: Residential, Multi Residential, New Landscape Residential (within last year), Most Unique Garden, Most Innovative Garden, Turf Free Landscape (10% turf), Commercial, Industrial, Institutional, Block Award.
EMERALD ASH BORER The City of Woodstock Parks Department is faced with many challenges with the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. We are currently removing, stumping and replanting white and green Ash trees on several city streets. Please do your part and water the trees when it is required. Also, if there is any trimming required on a city boulevard tree please call the Parks and Recreation office. The Park staff will evaluate the tree and do all necessary work.
