Incentives & Sponsorship TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ADDED VALUE

The Tourism Kingston Conference Incentive Program is a great way to take advantage of added value and funding to support your next event. Tourism Kingston recognizes the importance events play in showcasing our community while contributing to its local economy, quality of life and cultural identity. As a key stakeholder in the Kingston community, Tourism Kingston has offered support to assist event organizers with new initiatives that attract visitors to our community and profile our visitor attractions while increasing the overall tourism industry capacity. The following event funding guidelines have been developed to provide financial assistance to events hosted in Kingston.

Location – Confirm the new event will take place in Kingston, noting site and/or facilities names that have been requested or confirmed. Identify site and service requirements, city services, applications, permits, licenses, risk management measures, etc.

Accommodation – Utilize and promote one or more of the Tourism Partner hotels for overnight accommodations and confirm availability directly with proposed partner hotels.

7.

Participation Development – Profile the new event target audience, quantify the extent to which the new event will encourage participation and provide direct or indirect opportunities to community stakeholders and Tourism Kingston Partners.

8.

Economic Impact – Outline the short and long-term economic impact (direct and indirect) to the city that can be realized by the new event.

9.

Administration/Governance – Outline how the new event will strengthen the organizations capacity, structure and volunteer program.

Grant Funding Grants to be issued in two funding periods: • September 30 for events hosted between November 1 and April 30 • February 29 for events hosted between May 1 and October 31 Grant requests may be funded in part or in full.

Event Funding Priorities Funding is available for not-for-profit organizations that host new events which attract out of town participants who require overnight accommodation. The funding from Tourism Kingston is available for events which take place in or utilize partner hotels and venues.

A 2006 Inductee into the Canadian Marketing Hall of Legends and winner of the prestigious Financial Post Leader in Management Education, Wong has written for The Globe and Mail, Financial Post, Financial Times and has had regular features in Strategy and Marketing magazine. He has addressed and consulted with 100s of companies around the world on how to improve their marketing and on recent customer, competitive and technology trends.

John Phelan Associate Professor, Queen’s School of Business jphelan@business.queensu.ca (613) 533-6348 John teaches undergraduate courses in Leadership and works in the area of executive development at Queen’s School of Business. He speaks on wellness, wholeness, and life-work balance. Phelan has been recognized by the students for his strong interest in their overall development by being awarded the 2005 and 2006 Honorary ComSoc President Award. Phelan worked in professional hockey since 1994 as a coach in the American Hockey League, scout and player development. He has worked for the Ottawa Senators, Florida Panthers, New York Rangers and is currently working with the Vancouver Canucks in the area of sports psychology and team effectiveness. He has worked with many different organizations including most recently, Team Canada men’s ice hockey 2006 Olympics, the Canadian World Cup Champions 2004 and the Canadian Men’s Olympic Gold Medal winners in Salt Lake City 2002. John has spoken to a variety of organizations across Canada in areas of leadership, team effectiveness, and life and work balance. He is actively involved in rugby as a coach and is a former Captain of the Men’s Canadian Rugby team and always looking for a game of squash.

that enable municipalities to divert green waste away from landfills. He is also the key driver of Norterra Organics, the first of its kind organic recycling facility in South Eastern Ontario. Mr. Scott is a sought after industry speaker on topics related to organic recycling, green waste, return on the environment and environmental best practices. He is a graduate of Queen’s University. His company is privately-held and based out of Kingston, Ontario.

Dr. Brian Osborne Professor Emeritus, Queen’s University osborneb@queensu.ca (613) 533-6042 Dr. Brian Osborne is Professor Emeritus of Geography at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where he has taught since 1967. He is also an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University, and Visiting Adjunct Professor at Curtin University, Australia. Osborne’s research areas include aboriginal history, settlement history, cultural landscapes, and the role of the “culture of communications” in the development of a Canadian sense of place. He has published extensively on the Kingston area, his most widely read piece being the volume he wrote with Donald Swainson, Kingston: Building on the Past (1988) which he is reworking into a new edition. His most recent volume is The Rock and the Sword: A History of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Kingston (2004) which in 2006 won The Presbyterian Church in Canada’s Melville T. Bailey Prize for Congregational History. Osborne’s current research considers symbolic landscapes, monumentalism, and performed commemoration as contributors to the construction of social cohesion and national identity. This also relates to the role of the commodification of heritage and culture in post-industrial societies, and the impact of tourism as both an economic opportunity and a threat to sustainable communities. He is currently working on two volumes: Constructing Canadian Identity in a Trans-National World and Canada’s Countryside.
