MAYOR’S MESSAGE/CONTENTS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

I

guess it comes down to your point of view. When some people think of parks, they think picnics, lazing in the grass, enjoying the sun while soaking up the sights and sounds. When others think of parks, they think of jogging, tai chi, playing organized sports. No matter what your point of view on parks, the City of Woodstock can accommodate your vision. Welcome to the 2015 summer Recreation & Leisure Guide, which outlines hundreds of activities and locations throughout the Friendly City. From bike trails to inline skating, from swimming to running, from strolling to curling up under a tree with a good book, you should find something to suit your taste. If you are a seasoned veteran or a nervous rookie, there are programs to fit any skill level.

SWIMMING LESSONS What to Expect from Swimming Lessons Developing swimming skills requires a lot of practice and positive feedback to be successful. We encourage you to talk with your child about his/her lessons. Make sure that you have realistic expectations and your child feels no pressure to “pass” a level. Classes with low enrolment will be either cancelled or combined with another level approximately 10 days prior to the start date.

SWIMMING LESSONS Concerns or Questions? Your feedback is very important to us as it helps us provide quality programs and successful aquatic experiences. A pool deck supervisor is on duty at all times during our lesson programs. As lesson experts, the supervisors are available to answer your questions and assist with any of your concerns. Should you have a concern, do not hesitate to speak with a pool deck supervisor immediately. We encourage you to not wait until the last class.

LEARN TO SWIM

PRESCHOOL Give your child a head start learning to swim. The City of Woodstock Learn to Swim Program develops an appreciation and healthy respect for the water before kids get in too deep. In our basic aquatic progressions, we work to ensure 3–5 year olds become comfortable in the water and have fun acquiring and developing a foundation of water skills. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all preschool levels.

Inclement Weather

PRESCHOOL A

During inclement weather, please check the City’s website (www.cityofwoodstock.ca) and the city of Woodstock Facebook page for any cancelations.

Missed a Lesson? Unfortunately, due to the large volume of swimming participants, we are unable to make up or reschedule missed lessons. Lessons or program sessions missed by participants will not be rescheduled or refunded.

Instructor Requests We review all requests for specific instructors or specific gender of instructors; however we are unable to guarantee that any specific request will be granted.

How to Register You can either call or visit Southside Aquatic Centre or Lions Pool to register your child or yourself for our lessons. Please always select a couple of times that work well with your schedule so we can place you into a class easily. Payment must be made at the time of registration. If you are not sure where to register your child, ask their current instructor or come in during a public swim time so we can do an assessment.

Privates and Semi Private This is a one-to-one or a two-to-one instructional setting to provide extra attention to a specific skill. Semi-private participants must be registered at the same time. The City of Woodstock does not provide matches. Private and semi-private lessons run for 30 minutes.

PARENT AND TOT Spend quality time with your child while you both have fun, learn and socialize. We stress the importance of play and developing water-positive attitudes and skills, through structured in-water interaction between parent and child. We provide Lifesaving Society Water Smart® tips on keeping your child safe in any aquatic setting. Certified instructors provide guidance and answers to your questions. Because activities and progressions are based on child development, register in the level appropriate for your child’s age: 6–12 months, 12– 24 months or 2–3 years.

If you would like to discuss fundraising for your neighbourhood or would like to sponsor a playspace please call the Parks and Recreation office. If you notice damage to city parks please contact the Park office at 519-539-2382 Ext. 4101

Woodstock offers over 350 Hectares of Parkland and Open Spaces to the 38000 people that live in the city.

COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOTS

PLAYGROUND SAFETY TIPS To ensure that playgrounds are safe for our children we need to work together! Here are some safety tips which parents and caregivers should be familiar with and teach your children. • Playgrounds are not to be used during freezing or wet conditions, • Remove cords and drawstrings on children’s hoods, hats and jackets, • Tuck in all clothing that can get caught on playground equipment, • Wear a neck warmer instead of a scarf, • Take off bicycle helmets before using playground equipment. Bicycle helmets can get trapped in equipment and strangle a child, • Make sure children do not tie ropes or skipping ropes to slides and other playground equipment, • Supervise children on the playground, • Teach children how to use playground equipment and play safely, • Pets are not allowed on playground surfaces.

Do you have a shady back yard and would like to have a vegetable garden? The city of Woodstock has a community garden at Cottle Park on Salter Avenue (off Parkinson). There are 32 plots that are 16’ x 16’ in size. The garden is fenced and irrigated to help ensure a healthy crop. For more information on renting contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 519-539-2382 Ext. 4101

PLAYGROUNDS The City of Woodstock has 34 playgrounds located in 51 parks. The replacement and upgrading of playground equipment with city funds remains a challenge that the community can help us with. Local community groups and School Parent Councils can help to expedite the replacement or enhancement of playgrounds in their area through local fundraising. City staff will meet with interested citizens or groups to help develop a fundraising plan for your playground. By getting involved in this way, you’ll assist us in designing a playground

HOSTING FESTIVALS & EVENTS IN WOODSTOCK PLANNING A FESTIVAL OR EVENT?

TREE PLANTING CEREMONY Each year Woodstock celebrates Arbor Day by planting trees at a preselected school in our community. Students, teachers, parents, local community groups and City staff join together to help plant a variety of trees and shrubs. The City of Woodstock recognizes the importance that festivals and events can play in our community. They contribute to our quality of life, local economic development and community identity. The city intends to be proactive in attracting new events, as well as working with existing event organizers to support the success of their activities.

Arbor Day originated in Nebraska in 1872 where a day was set aside and over a million trees were planted. This idea quickly spread to neighbouring states and to Canada. Today we still celebrate by planting trees each spring in Woodstock. Do your part to green up Woodstock by participating in Arbor Day activities by planting a tree at your residence.

We can assist event organizers in identifying the permits and approvals required to provide a safe and successful event. Anyone planning an outdoor festival or event must first contact the Parks & Recreation Department to obtain event guidelines to ensure all requirements for hosting an event are in place. For more information contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 519-539-2382 Ext. 4101

The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a highly destructive insect pest of ash trees. Native to eastern Asia, this pest was first discovered in Canada and the U.S. in 2002. The EAB has killed millions of ash trees in Southwestern Ontario, Michigan and surrounding states, and poses a major economic and environmental threat to urban and forested areas in both countries. The EAB attacks and kills all species of ash (except Mountain ash which is not a true ash).

Judging will be based on the following criteria: • originality of garden landscape design; • plant material; • maintenance and vigor of plant material and beds; • overall effect. Awards in the form of plaques will be given to the Best of Class and Runner-up in the following categories: Residential, Multi Residential, New Landscape Residential (within last year), Most Unique Garden, Most Innovative Garden, Turf Free Landscape (10% turf), Commercial, Industrial, Institutional, Block Award.

How does the EAB spread? While the EAB can fly up to several kilometres, another significant factor contributing to its spread is the movement of firewood, nursery stock, trees, logs, lumber, wood with bark attached and wood or bark chips.

Signs of infestation Tree decline, including: • thinning crown • diminished density of leaves • evidence of adult beetle feeding on S-Shaped Tunnels leaves • long shoots growing from the trunk or branches • vertical cracks in the trunk • small D-shaped emergence holes • S-shaped tunnels under the bark filled with fine sawdust
