Blue Box Collection Tips • Don't miss your collection! Place your blue boxes at the curb before 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection. • On windy days, put your blue boxes out the morning of collection rather than the night before. Stack blue boxes to prevent paper from blowing away. • During winter months, set blue boxes on cleared portions of your driveway and not on top of snow banks or icy patches. • Do not overload blue boxes. Purchase additional boxes if needed or use rigid open-top containers the same size as the blue box. Large oversized containers over the weight limit of 20 kg (44 lbs) pose a health and safety risk to contractors. • Flatten small cardboard boxes and place them securely in the smaller blue box. Flatten, bundle and tie larger boxes and place them on top of, or between, your blue boxes.
Blue Box
• Empty liquids and remove lids from bottles and jars, place lids separately in your blue box.
Additional blue boxes are available at the following locations: Durham Region Waste Management Centre 4600 Garrard Rd. Whitby 905-579-5264 | 1-800-667-5671 Monday to Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. waste@durham.ca
Service Oshawa (City Hall)

Green Bin Tips Using Your Kitchen Food Waste Container
• Store the small container in your kitchen in a convenient place. • Line your kitchen container with 100% certified compostable bags, paper based products or wrap organics securely in newspaper. Buy correct liner bags and keep our compost free of plastic. • Empty your food waste directly into the liner bags.
Look for these logos when purchasing compostable bags:
From Kitchen Container to Curbside Green Bin
• Once your kitchen container is full, tie bags and place contents into the large curbside green bin for collection. Lock lid securely to discourage pests. • Store your green bin in your garage or outside in the shade. • On your collection day, place your green bin at the curb beside your garbage before 7:00 a.m. • Damaged green bins can be exchanged free of charge at the Durham Region Waste Management Centre (see page 10) or call Service Oshawa.
Important Reminders
• No plastic liner bags (i.e. grocery bags). • Remove plastic food wrap and packaging. • Do not place the smaller kitchen container at the curb. • Do not overload your green bin. The weight limit is 20 kg (44 lbs). Purchase additional green bins if necessary at the Durham Region Waste Management Centre (see page 10) . For more information visit www.oshawa.ca/waste

Don’t spoil it for the rest of us… It is up to everyone to keep our community beautiful for all to enjoy.
Illegal dumping and littering causes serious environmental problems, costs taxpayers and affects our enjoyment of our parks and community. Illegal dumping includes: • The dumping of waste such as furniture, bags of garbage, yard waste and construction materials along the roadside, in our parks and natural areas, and on construction sites and vacant lots. • Disposing of household waste in or around garbage cans located in our parks, along the boulevard or at a recreation facility. • Tossing litter on the ground or out the window of your car. The cost to dispose of your waste responsibly is far less than the costs to clean up illegally dumped waste. Be a responsible citizen and dispose of your waste properly.
15
Are you ready? Plan for emergencies
Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere. Severe weather such as floods, tornadoes, ice storms, and accidents such as chemical spills can strike any community. The City of Oshawa is prepared to respond during emergencies, but only you can prepare yourself and your household. Below are emergency preparedness tips: Prepare for 72 hours: Plan on having food, water and other essentials, such as medications, for at least 72 hours (three days) for your family. Create a family emergency plan: As a family, discuss your emergency plan and what to do during an evacuation or emergency. Outline roles and responsibilities. If possible, pre-arrange for an out-oftown location to stay during an emergency. Practise your plan. Plan for your pets: Make plans with trusted neighbours to care for your pet in case you are not home in the event of an emergency. Remember to ensure that your pet has proper identification, a leash and carrier.
During an Emergency
Assemble emergency kits: Put together a family emergency kit with basic items your family may need, such as a first aid kit, personal hygiene supplies, flashlight and batteries. If you have a vehicle, keep a vehicle emergency kit in your vehicle with items you may need, such as flares, booster cables, maps, tools and sleeping bags.
