MAYOR’S MESSAGE / CONTENTS MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Bears and some other mammals hibernate all winter long, people in Woodstock do not have to. As Mayor of the City of Woodstock, it brings me great pleasure to introduce the Fall/ Winter/Spring Recreation & Leisure Guide. The city and numerous groups have combined their efforts to offer something for every age. Take time to read the guide and see what piques your interest. You are never too old to try something new. There are a growing number of recreational programs and activities offered through city run programs and from a variety of community groups to keep you and your family active and engaged throughout the seasons. Tired of sobbing over the exploits from the blue and white in Toronto? Get out to cheer on our own at a Navy Vets game. Think your sweeping talents are being wasted in your home? Try curling. On behalf of City council I encourage all citizens to participate in one or more programs available for your health and well-being, and encourage others by getting out to cheer them on. There is truly something for everyone in this city! Trevor Birtch, Mayor

This Guide can also be accessed on the city’s website at www.cityofwoodstock.ca

ADULT LESSONS ADULT AQUATIC PROGRAMS Whether you’re just starting out or just want help with your strokes, our adult program is for the young at heart no matter what the age. Set your own goals. Work with certified instructors to learn to swim, or improve your current swimming ability and water fitness. You won’t be going to the Olympics, but you’ll develop water confidence and smooth recognizable strokes good enough for lane swimming and fit enough for the beach. We incorporate Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all adult levels.

ADULT 1 You’ll work towards a 10–15 m swim on your front and back. You’ll do jump entries from the side and recover an object from the bottom in chest-deep water. Improve your fitness and your flutter kick with 4 x 9–12 m interval training.

ADULT 2 Kick it up a notch working on two interval training workouts of 4 x 25 m kicking and front or back crawl. You’ll be able to perform dive entries and demonstrate breaststroke arms and breathing over 10–15 m. You’ll be supporting yourself at the surface for 1–2 minutes, and showing off your handstands in shallow water.

ADULT 3 You will refine your front and back crawl over 50 m swims of each, and breaststroke over 15–25 m. Then they’ll pick up the pace in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl; and 4 x 10–15 m breaststroke.

PARKS & OPEN SPACES that not only meets safety standards but reflects your community’s special needs. If you would like to discuss fundraising for your neighbourhood or would like to sponsor a playspace please call the Parks and Recreation office. If you notice damage to city parks please contact the Park office at 519‑539‑2382 Ext. 4101.

Woodstock offers over 350 hectares of parkland and open spaces to the 38,000 people that live in the city.

COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOTS

PLAYGROUND SAFETY TIPS To ensure that playgrounds are safe for our children we need to work together! Here are some safety tips which parents and caregivers should be familiar with and teach your children. • Playgrounds are not to be used during freezing or wet conditions, • Remove cords and drawstrings on children’s hoods, hats and jackets, • Tuck in all clothing that can get caught on playground equipment, • Wear a neck warmer instead of a scarf, • Take off bicycle helmets before using playground equipment. Bicycle helmets can get trapped in equipment and strangle a child, • Make sure children do not tie ropes or skipping ropes to slides and other playground equipment, • Supervise children on the playground, • Teach children how to use playground equipment and play safely, • Pets are not allowed on playground surfaces.

Do you have a shady back yard and would like to have a vegetable garden? The city of Woodstock has a community garden at Cottle Park on Salter Avenue (off Parkinson). There are 32 plots that are 16’ x 16’ in size. The garden is fenced and irrigated to help ensure a healthy crop. For more information on renting contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 519‑539‑2382 Ext. 4101.

PLAYGROUNDS The City of Woodstock has 34 playgrounds located in 51 parks. The replacement and upgrading of playground equipment with city funds remains a challenge that the community can help us with. Local community groups and School Parent Councils can help to expedite the replacement or enhancement of playgrounds in their area through local fundraising. City staff will meet with interested citizens or groups to help develop a fundraising plan for your playground. By getting involved in this way, you’ll assist us in designing a playground

PARKS & OPEN SPACES SPRING CLEAN-UP DAY

Arbor Day originated in Nebraska in 1872 where a day was set aside and over a million trees were planted. This idea quickly spread to neighbouring states and to Canada. Today we still celebrate by planting trees each spring in Woodstock. Do your part to green up Woodstock by participating in Arbor Day activities by planting a tree at your residence.

HOW TO RENT SPORTSFIELDS We are committed to a fair and balanced allocation of public recreational spaces for all Woodstock residents. Recognizing the ever changing landscape and increased demand for recreational services, we are responsive to community needs and our recreational facilities and services are delivered in a fair and equitable manner. For more information contact the Parks and Recreation Dept. email: parksandrecreation@cityofwoodstock.ca or call 519‑539‑2382 Ext. 4101.

PLANNING PROCESS FOR NEW PARKS

After a long winter Woodstock residents come together to clean up areas in the city that have litter. Students earning hours for school, parents, local community groups and City staff join together to rid the city of several tons of waste and recycling. Help put litter in its place.

ARBOR DAY

Parks and pathways play a key role in enhancing Woodstock residents’ quality of life. They contribute to residents’ physical and psychological health, enhance civic pride and strengthen local identity. Parks and pathways also support the greenspace network, enhance the City’s natural beauty and promote active transportation. In order to achieve customer service excellence, the City of Woodstock strives to provide new and growing communities with excellent parks and pathways that meet the active and passive recreational needs of residents. The success of parks and pathways begins in the early stages of planning, during the pre-application consultation stage and again at the subdivision review stage, when park blocks and pathways are selected and acquired. The size and shape of a park block helps define which facilities can be accommodated while the location of pathway locks helps provide an interconnected greenspace network. The City’s annual park budgeting exercise, as well as park design and construction process, are key factors that influence the delivery of new parks.

TREE PLANTING CEREMONY Each year Woodstock celebrates Arbor Day by planting trees at a preselected school in our community. Students, teachers, parents, local community groups and City staff join together to help plant a variety of trees and shrubs.
