THIS EARTH HOUR, SHINE A LIGHT ON CLIMATE ACTION. Switch off your light and switch on your social power at earthhour.org

EARTHHOUR.ORG

Hundreds of millions of people, businesses and governments around the world unite each year to support the largest environmental event in history – Earth Hour. By switching off your lights and non-essential power sources for one hour, you too can send a powerful message for action to save the planet. Earth Hour, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), began in 2007 and now includes participants from over 152 countries in more than 6,700 cities and towns worldwide. The Woodstock Environmental Advisory Council (WEAC) would like to encourage individuals and businesses to ‘switch off’ and take a stand against climate change. Join us March 25th from 8:30–9:30 pm. For more information on Earth Hour visit, www.earthhour.org.

Reduce your need for plastic shopping bags by: ✓✓ Using reusable bags, boxes, backpacks or carts for your shopping. ✓✓ Saying “no” to plastic bags at the cash register if you only have a few items. ✓✓ Put purchases in a bag you’re already carrying. ✓✓ Don’t take a bag unless you really need it. Bags can usually hold at least eight items, and avoid double-bagging. ✓✓ Keep bags at your front door, in your purse or in the car, ready to re-use on your next visit to the store, or to protect your belongings if it rains. ✓✓ Say “no” to plastic bags. Avoid the minimum 5 ¢ charge per bag.

JUICE

Please avoid use of bags; place heavier items on top.

JUICE

FIBRES

CONTAINERS

JUICE

• newspapers, flyers, household paper, envelopes

HINTS & TIPS Keep ’em Loose

Put all containers loose into your containers box in order to make the process easier at the recycling centre. If you tie them in a bag, there is the extra step of ripping them open so the materials can be sorted properly. Keep the weight of E UIC your recycling container under 20 kilograms or 44 pounds. J

Packaging Guideline

If it contained something dry (e.g., cereal box), it can be placed in your fibres box. If it contained something wet (e.g., milk/juice carton) it belongs in your containers box.

Remove the Lids – All of Them

Remove all lids from all containers. Leaving the lids on traps air inside the containers and they end up taking up too much room in the collection truck. Trapped air cannot be compacted. The following lids go in your containers box: • metal “caps” or “lids” • plastic “caps” or “lids” that are the same size (or larger) than the container itself (e.g., sour cream, margarine or glass jar lids)

• aluminum, metal and ICE glass JUcontainers • plastic jugs, bottles and tubs (#1 through #5), plastic bags

• gift wrap (no foil), greeting cards

JUICE

• magazines, catalogues, telephone books, soft cover books

• cardboard cans (i.e. frozen orange juice)

JUICE

PIZZA

• aluminum foil and trays

• boxboard, paper bags, food boxes

• rigid polystyrene (#6)

• paper towel rolls, tissue boxes, dryer sheet boxes, detergent boxes

• styrofoam food trays (no large pieces JUICE of styrofoam from PA I N T packaging)

• paper egg cartons, coffee takeout trays

JUICE

PIZZA

• corrugated cardboard, pizza boxes

PIZZA

• gable top & Tetra-Pak containers • empty aerosol and paint cans

PA I N T

PIZZA

The following lids go in the garbage: • plastic twist off caps • any other plastic “cap” or “lid” that is smaller than the container itself (e.g., pop bottle caps, milk/juice carton lids)

Keep Fibers and Containers Separate

The recycling trucks are equipped with “split” bodies – they have a wall inside that keeps fibers and containers separate. If you see a collector toss everything into the same truck, know that they are not being mixed together. Please keep the weight of your recycling container under 20 kilograms or 44 pounds.
