ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Welcome to the Woodstock Art Gallery, situated on the traditional territories of the Indigenous Peoples and covered by the Upper Canada Treaties. We would like to acknowledge the history of the traditional territory on which the Woodstock Art Gallery stands. We would also like to respect the longstanding relationships of the local Indigenous groups, the Haudenosaunee, Lenape, and Anishinaabek of this land and

MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD 2020 was certainly a year that tested us all. Even in the face of challenges, the Woodstock Art Gallery Advisory Board and staff rose to the occasion to adapt to this new virtual world. I would like to extend my appreciation to the entire board for embracing virtual meetings early on. The commitment and dedication of all our board members during this unusual and difficult time is a testament to the health and sustainability of this organization. An unexpected positive outcome of moving our meetings to an online format was that it offered greater transparency to the citizens of Woodstock regarding the important work we do. During 2020, the Advisory Board undertook the development of two significant policies — one on finance, which has helped the organization streamline its reporting processes, and one on the board recruitment and orientation process, which proved to be quite fruitful. We are pleased to welcome artist and designer Asma Khanani and Magda Stroinska, Chair of the Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University, to our ranks. Their individual perspectives and expertise will be a much needed asset to the Gallery’s future growth as we move into our strategic planning for the next five years.

And most importantly the staff of the Woodstock Art Gallery deserve the utmost respect and admiration. On behalf of the Advisory Board I want to sincerely thank you for your extraordinary efforts, investment, and unbounding creativity. We acknowledge how difficult this year was on all of you, both professionally and personally, and want to deeply thank you for continuing to innovate and contribute to the ongoing success of the Woodstock Art Gallery. Because of you, the future is bright even when it is uncertain. As an integral part of the City of Woodstock’s Cultural Department, I want to acknowledge the continued support of the Mayor and City Council, along with the assistance of the City’s senior management team. I am proud to be the Chair of this resilient and resourceful organization that continues to fulfill its mission by “providing opportunities for people to express, experience, and learn creatively through art,” which is so crucial during these difficult times. Keep On! Judy Dent Chair, Woodstock Art Gallery Advisory Board

We are also very thankful for the support we have received from our local donors and businesses this year. Your support has provided the Gallery with the opportunity to pivot our inperson exhibition and education programming online. I would like to make special mention of the Canada Council for the Arts, which provided the Gallery with two significant grants. One grant underwrites the expenses for the internationally touring exhibition of Canadian author portraits by recent Order of Canada recipient and senior Canadian artist John Hartman. The second grant was part of the much need COVID-19 Emergency Support Fund.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR/CURATOR 2020 was certainly difficult, but through these challenges there were some silver linings. Although we had to cancel many in-person programs, the team at the Woodstock Art Gallery rose to the challenge and created a suite of engaging and educational virtual resources. These resources were coupled with the development of the Community Creation Art Kits, chock-full of art supplies and distributed through a partnership with the Children’s Aid Society of Oxford County. These new endeavors were fully supported by our wonderful donors, both corporate and individual. I want to express my sincerest thanks to those who generously contributed to the Gallery’s new delivery models during such a crucial time of development. Two important procedural documents were also completed this year. The Accessibility Guide provides best practices and goals for improving accessibility in all of the Gallery’s operations and programs. This important resource was developed by Assistant Curator of Education Intern Connor MacKinnon in concert with the Education Department. The Language and Style Guide was another significant accomplishment. Led by Cultural Communications Coordinator Robin De Angelis, this document further strengthens the professionalism and impact of the Gallery’s outward-focused content.

03

In July we said farewell to our Head of Collections, Carolyn Hickey. Nell Wheal stepped into this position in October 2020 and has already proven to be a welcome addition to the WAG team, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experience. I want to thank the Advisory Board for all their support during this unprecedented year. I would like to make special mention of Chair Judy Dent for her upbeat enthusiasm, everforgiving flexibility and unwavering trust. And I echo the acknowledgement of the Gallery staff in the Chair’s message. Thank you for your tenacity, fortitude and unbounded creativity. It is a pleasure and an honour to work with and for all of you — the board, the staff, the Gallery’s members, supporters and donors — as together we reinvent the business model for what a public art gallery can be and can become. Art holds the power to express, heal and overcome difficult and challenging situations. It is needed now more than ever to instill belonging and a sense of community. My sincerest thanks and appreciation to you all as the Woodstock Art Gallery continues to offer this necessary service to the citizens of Woodstock and Oxford County. Mary Reid, MA, MBA Director/Curator

KIND WORDS Our friends at WAG are leaders in celebrating women in art not only on #IWD2020, but each and every day. They have some amazing leaders within their organization as well so today we also recognize the work of the gallery’s curator, Mary and her team. We appreciate all you do! – Facebook I enjoyed the meeting today very much. I did learn a lot about David Milne as a result of a well-researched presentation, and look forward to seeing the exhibition. Thank you for a wellorganized event. – Cathy Groulx To be showcased amongst gifted artists is an honour that certainly encourages me to appreciate my creative efforts. The songwriter, Tom Waits, said, “The only thing I really do is make jewellery for the inside of other people’s minds.” Perhaps adornment is a melody that is sung ever so quietly. Thanks for all your efforts that support the creative spirit. – Janet Whittington

You and your dedicated team did a fantastic job! You were all very organized, prepared, and such a pleasure to work with. Congratulations to you all for successfully executing the online show and Evening with the Jury. – Kristine MacGregor I just looked at the virtual resources page and was very impressed with the variety and inspiring instructions. I was particularly intrigued by the jigsaw puzzles and as I am a puzzle junkie. Did the Canadian Cow — what fun! – Catherine Elliot Shaw Kids loved it...my granddaughter is into drawing and painting and she looked at all the art and started doing different things with her art....she’s 13! – Tammy Goulden ⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

I have just completed my first semester at the Yukon School of Arts. … Living in the Yukon is an experience I will take with me for the rest of my life and this very generous contribution helped to make that possible for me. I appreciate your help in getting me closer to my future goals and allowing me to explore art further. – Page Cowell, 2020 recipient of the Friends of the Woodstock Legacy Scholarship

The WAG was in the news 75 times in 2020: Woodstock Sentinel Review = 28 articles, 12 Art City columns Heart FM Radio = 22 articles, 2 live interviews Rogers TV/What’s Up Oxford = 2 episodes The Woodstock Local = 7 articles, Community Page listing Post Media = 1 nationally syndicated column 35
