COURSES YOUTH FIRST AID COURSES

FIRST AID & CPR PROGRAMS

Red Cross has two programs designed to give youth the age-appropriate skills they require, while simultaneously increasing their capacity to improve and respond to challenges accordingly.

Canadian Red Cross Core First Aid & CPR courses offer lifesaving first aid skills. All courses cover cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, and babies (according to the level of CPR included). Courses meet legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards. Courses offer skills for individuals needing training for the workplace or for those interested in having first aid skills so they can respond to emergencies at home.

Red Cross First Aid programs are unique. Developed by educational and instructional professionals along with technical advisors, our programs offer both practical skills and greater self-awareness. These programs are designed to increase youth capacity for care in their communities. Notes: ▪ Bring a drink and snacks/lunch ▪ Lunch and breaks allotted (unsupervised) Completion Criteria: ▪ Attendance: attend and participate in 100% of the course ▪ Personal Care Skills: comprehend and demonstrate the critical personal care skills ▪ First Aid Skills: comprehend and demonstrate the critical first aid skills ▪ Behaviour: exhibit the behaviours expected of a participant in this course

COURSES

LIFEGUARD COURSES The Canadian Red Cross Lifeguard Program certifies professional lifeguards in two simple steps and offers comprehensive and straightforward transfers from other certifications, which is faster, easier and more cost effective for both aquatic facilities and candidates. Step 1: Assistant Lifeguard Course for 12 years of age and older. Aquatic centres can prepare younger teens to assist or volunteer at aquatic facilities (as slide attendants), summer camps and municipal park camp programs. Step 2: Lifeguard Course (pool or waterfront for 15 years of age and older).

Assistant Lifeguard Course Includes knowledge and practice of first aid, rescue skills, lifeguarding skills, safe behaviours, and how to be a part of an elite team. This ensures participants are trained in prevention of injuries, not just how to respond to them. Participants should bring lunch, snack and beverages for a one-hour lunch break and allotted unsupervised breaks. Please bring Swim Kids Progress Card to Skills Evaluation. Prerequisites: ▪ 13 years of age (by the end of the course) ▪ Ability to swim the Red Cross Swim Kids Level 10 or equivalent or higher

INSTRUCTOR PROGRAMS The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop swimming and water safety skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Red Cross Swim @ School, Red Cross Swim @ Camp, Red Cross Swim for Adults & Teens and Red Cross Swim Adapted programs.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) BAC The WSI Course includes four components: 1. O nline (14 - 20 hours) Focuses on the theory of instruction through videos, virtual games, online activities, workbook exercises and knowledge evaluation at the end of each module. 2. Skills Evaluation (2 hours) Ensures candidates have the necessary water safety skills, strokes and instructor emergency response skills equivalent to the Red Cross Swim Kids Level 10 performance criteria. 3. Teaching Experience (12-30 hours) Candidates complete a minimum of 12 hours; this allows candidates to have first-hand experience observing real progressions and swimmer skills with a mix of personalities. This gives them a frame of reference to reflect on the link to the theory of the course. Prerequisites: ▪ 15 years of age or older by the last day of the WSI – Classroom & Pool ▪ One of: Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard, Standard First Aid or higher, Bronze Cross (certifications do not need to be current) ▪ Perform the water safety skills and strokes to meet the highest level of performance in the Red Cross Swim Kids program

4. Classroom and Pool (21 hours) Candidates are evaluated on their knowledge and ability to apply the theory for effectively planning, teaching and evaluation of swimmers in the Red Cross Swim programs. Demonstrating skills, candidates complete a variety of practice-teaching exercises either with their peers or using actual swimmers in an existing program. WSI – Skills Evaluation: can be completed before, during or after the WSI – Online or WSI – Teaching Experience, but must be completed before attending the WSI – Classroom & Pool component. Candidates are evaluated on water safety skills and strokes to meet the highest level of performance criteria in the Red Cross Swim Kids program. Completed and signed Water Safety Instructor Skills Evaluation Worksheets remain valid for one year, if completing the skills evaluation prior to attending the WSI – Classroom & Pool component. WSI – Teaching Experience: complete a minimum of 12 hours (total) of teaching experience (with 100% attendance and participation, including assisting a Supervising WSI in the water). The WSI – Teaching Experience is completed within six months of finishing the WSI – Online and before starting the WSI – Classroom & Pool component. Note, the Red Cross recommends completing an entire session, if possible, so candidates can follow swimmers’ progression from the first to the final lesson.

Skating Class Descriptions Parent and Child (Ages 2.5+) This program is recommended for children with little or no skating experience and who still require assistance to stand on the ice. The focus for this class will be teaching balance, posture and learning to stand up on the ice. Parents wearing skates must be comfortable enough on skates to physically support their child who may not yet be sturdy or balanced on the ice. Parents who are not stable on skates must have ice grippers on their shoes (limited supply available). Lil’ Skaters Step 1 (Ages 3+) To participate in this class, children are required to stand and walk on the ice with little or no assistance. It is an independent class where skaters follow instructions on the ice in a group setting. If the skaters are neither holding their balance on the ice nor following instruction, then the “Parent and Child” class is recommended. The fundamental movements of skating are being introduced in this class, including skating forward, walking backward, turning, stopping and jumping. Various activities such as action songs, teaching aids and group games are utilized to ensure a fun learning environment.
