PUBLIC ART

Public art encourages creative expression and promotes cultural conversations. As part of the Public Art Policy, the Town regularly funds new public art projects that complement Stony Plain’s natural beauty. A visit to Stony Plain isn’t complete without viewing some of our most well-known public art pieces.

Sheriff Umbach Statue

Enduring Connections

Town Hall Statues

Disc Drumming

Forged from iron and horseshoes this piece was created using centuries old blacksmithing techniques. The work can be viewed at Heritage Park and represents the many important relationships the Town of Stony Plain holds with the community.

The statue of Sheriff Israel Umbach, Stony Plain’s first sheriff and overseer, can be viewed at Rotary Park. He is known for forcing the Canadian Northern Railway to pay their outstanding taxes by chaining a locomotive to the tracks.

Located at Rotary Park, this sculpture is composed of eleven steel agricultural disc harrows welded on an elliptical frame. Each harrow reverberates with a different bell like tone when played with the attached mallets.

In 2008, two Centennial statues entitled “Story Time” and “Golden Years” were installed in honour of Stony Plain’s 100th Anniversary. The two statues can be viewed in front of the Town Office.

Trifecta

Stony Plain’s first public art bench is a combination of poured solid concrete and hand carved concrete rocks. The heaviness of the work conveys a sense of grounding while users are enjoying the outdoors.

Poetry Panels

In 2020, poetry panels represeting the four seasons were added to the gazebo in Rotary Park.
