OUR HERITAGE The Heritage Preservation Ofce (HPO) is part of the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Division and is stafed by the Heritage Resources Coordinator and the Heritage Researcher. The Ofce oversees all City matters related to the Ontario Heritage Act, including the listing and designation of heritage properties, support for the Municipal Heritage Committee, and administration of the City’s archaeology policy and heritage incentive Moreprograms.information: Heritage Preservation Ofce 279 Simcoe Street, Peterborough ON 705-742-7777 peterborough.ca/heritageheritage@peterborough.cax1489 74

The program assists owners with the extra costs associated with maintaining the historic features of their buildings. To be eligible for the program, the building must be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, the property must have a heritage conservation agreement registered on title, and, in most cases, the property must be located within the central area of the city.

Heritage Register

The HPO, in conjunction with the Clerk’s Ofce, works to administer the designation program. Individual properties can be considered for designation at the request of the owner, City Council, or at the recommendation of City staf or PACAC. There are currently no fees or other costs associated with the designation process.

A list of properties on Peterborough’s Heritage Register is available online and includes designated and listed properties. The list is searchable by clicking “Ctrl F”. Ofcial copies of the Heritage Register are located at City Hall in the Clerk’s Ofce or at the Heritage Preservation Ofce. You can also obtain information about the Heritage Register by calling the Heritage Preservation Ofce.

The Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (PACAC) is the City’s Municipal Heritage Committee established under the Ontario Heritage Act. The PACAC advises City Council on issues pertaining to heritage conservation, recommends properties for designation by the City, builds awareness in Peterborough about heritage conservation, and undertakes heritage-related projects such as the annual Heritage Hunt and Doors Open Peterborough.

In 2016, the City designated its frst Heritage Conservation District (HCD), The Avenues and Neighbourhood HCD, under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act. Conservation Districts are large areas of the city that share a common history and are worthy of designation as a group of properties.

Under the Ontario Heritage Act, municipalities can designate properties and entire neighbourhoods which have “cultural heritage value or interest.” Since 1975, Peterborough City Council has protected more than 400 historic properties with heritage designation By-laws. The designation process seeks to manage change to heritage properties so that heritage features are protected. Designation can also make property owners eligible for fnancial incentives such as the Heritage Property Tax Rebate Program.

The HPTRP is designed to encourage preservation and enhancement of our rich historic landscape. The City recognizes that well-cared-for historic buildings form a vital backdrop for making Peterborough a vibrant and inviting place to be.

The City maintains a register of heritage properties within the municipality which includes buildings designated individually under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, heritage conservation districts designated under Part V of the Act, and Listed buildings, which are not designated but have been identifed as having cultural heritage value.
