Swimmer 7- Rookie Patrol

Beginner Swimmer

Power into patrols! Swimmers in Rookie Patrol continue their stroke development with 50m front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke swims. Lifesaving sport skills are introduced through a 25m obstacle swim and 15m object carry. First aid training is also provided focusing on the assessment of conscious victims, contacting EMS, and treatment for bleeding. Workouts of 350m with 100m timed swimming do wonders for the fitness levels! Prerequisite: Swimmer 6.

This program is designed for teens and adults of all swimming abilities. You will be divided into groups based on swimming comfort and skill. Instructors will then work with each group to achieve desired goals such as learning to swim, improving strokes, and increasing efficiency in the water. Ultimately, everyone will be more comfortable and confident in the water!

They also have a chance to tackle more lifesaving sport skills through a lifesaving medley, timed object support, and rescue with a buoyant aid. First aid training continues with an emphasis on assessment of unconscious victims, treatment of victims in shock, and obstructed airway procedures. There are also plenty of skill drills to develop a strong lifesaving foundation. Prerequisite: Rookie Patrol.

Swim to get fit! This program is recommended for teens and adults who want to challenge themselves in a non-competitive setting. Swimmers also gain more advanced lifesaving skills such as defense methods, victim removals, and rolling over and supporting a victim in shallow water. Prerequisite: Ranger Patrol.

Adaptive lessons provide the opportunity for swimmers of all abilities to be water-safe and water confident. Participants must fill out a questionnaire in order to provide instructors with information on participant’s needs. A follow-up phone call may be required by the Aquatic Coordinator, who will work to pair instructors with students according to their abilities. THE AR T S

Peterborough Fun Guide | Winter 2023

Art Gallery of Peterborough The Art Gallery of Peterborough (AGP) is a nonprofit public gallery. We present a variety of visual art experiences and explorations through our exhibitions and education programs. Our exhibitions change several times a year, so there is always something new to see. The gallery is located on the shore of Little Lake beside Del Crary Park, and admission is always free. Support the gallery by purchasing a membership and receive 10% off all workshops and children’s programs. Visit agp.on.ca for more information.

Youth Art Mentorship Program The Youth Art Mentorship Program (YAM) gives Grade 11 and 12 high school students living in the City of Peterborough or Peterborough County the opportunity to work directly with professional art mentors. Students will gain hands-on experience in the arts and create artwork that will be part of a public group art exhibition at the Art Gallery of Peterborough. Applications open November 1 with a deadline of December 16, 2022.

Family Sundays Each month our team creates a free, seasonally themed art activity kit. Each kit is suitable for all ages and includes the basic materials required. Pick one up on your next visit to the gallery. (Supplies are limited. Limit of 4 kits per visit)

Group Tours and Workshops Get inspired by our education team with a guided tour of our exhibitions. We’ll discuss various topics, including themes and techniques that will be sure to inform and inspire. We also offer extended tours with workshops where you can get creative in our studio and make your own artwork inspired by the exhibitions. Advance booking is required. For teachers and home schoolers, please visit agp. on.ca/programs/school-education-programs for more information about our school programs.

Day Camps and Children’s Programs The Art Gallery offers both children’s day camps and programs. Please refer to the CAMPS and EXPLORE sections of this guide.

Is your child applying to a post-secondary art program? We offer portfolio evaluations to support youth in advancing their knowledge and understanding of post-secondary portfolio requirements. This program is free to participate. Portfolio reviews will take place on November 19 and 26. Spaces are limited, so sign up before November 16 to secure yours. Visit agp.on.ca/programs/yam for more information.

Peterborough Fun Guide | Winter 2023

Our Heritage The Heritage Preservation Office (HPO) is part of the City’s Arts, Culture & Heritage Division and is staffed by the Heritage Resources Coordinator and the Heritage Researcher. The Office oversees all City matters related to the Ontario Heritage Act, including the listing and designation of heritage properties, support for the Municipal Heritage Committee, and administration of the City’s archaeology policy and heritage incentive programs.

Annual Events Heritage Hunt Test your knowledge of Peterborough’s architectural heritage and win some great prizes! This fun scavenger hunt, which consists of identifying the location of architectural details in the city, takes place annually. For more information please contact the Heritage Preservation Office: heritage@peterborough.ca.

Doors Open Since 2003, Doors Open Peterborough has invited the public to experience heritage sites across the city for free, many of which are not normally open to the public. This event takes place annually and invites residents and visitors to discover new and exciting places throughout Peterborough. The event is part of the wider Doors Open Ontario program which takes place across the province from April to October annually.
