January• 2023 Recycling Reminders for 2023 Here are your new year recycling reminders for 2023:

Mattress recycling: Mattresses will only be accepted at the Lindsay Landfill, or through curbside pick up. This will ensure all mattresses are recycled. To date our mattress recycling program has diverted over 10,000 mattresses from ending up in our landfills. Bulky plastics: Bulky plastics are accepted at the Lindsay Landfill for recycling. This includes items such as plastic beverage crates (milk crates), plastic lawn furniture, clean plastic drums, totes, empty garbage/recycling bins and clean plastic buckets and pails. Reminder: The Fenelon Landfill is no longer open during winter hours and updates have been made to Somerville and Lindsay Landfill hours. See page 31 to view the full schedule.

Snow in the Bush by Rhonda Larson

Textile recycling: Textile recycling is available for drop-off at all five landfills. Acceptable materials are clothing, linens and shoes. Items should be in clear bags and not mixed in with other recycling items. For a full list of recyclable textiles visit Diversion Programs on our website www. kawarthalakes.ca/en/living-here/diversion-programs.aspx

Private, Seasonal and Unassumed Roads In order to receive waste/recycling collection, private, seasonal and unassumed roads must be properly maintained. Waste and recycling will not be collected if the driver deems the road unsafe for travel. All roads must follow the standards outlined in By-Law 2016-144 in order to receive collection. Here are a few helpful reminders to avoid any delays in service: • Have the road plowed to a minimum of 4m wide. • Sand or salt the road when needed. • Make sure vegetation is cut back to a minimum of 5m/15ft high and 4m/12ft wide • Fill and grade potholes when needed. • Provide a suitable turnaround area for the collection truck Seasonal collection resumes May 1 and ends October 27. For any questions regarding collection on private, seasonal and unassumed roads, please visit www.kawarthalakes.ca/waste. To report littering on a road, bridge or causeway, please visit www.kawarthalakes.ca/reportit.

Staff operating each of the five landfills located throughout Kawartha Lakes provide quality customer service to ensure a helpful and clean landfill for all residents to access. Their enthusiasm and dedication for protecting the environment is on display as they work with residents to divert material for reuse or recycling rather than being landfilled. Kawartha Lakes is grateful to have such a committed team working in the Solid Waste department! Planning a trip to one of the municipality’s five landfills? Please remember to follow these steps when you arrive: • Immediately report to the scale house where an attendant will be happy to help you. • Follow attendant instructions. • Follow all signs and directions. • If you don’t know where a certain material goes, ask a landfill attendant for help. • After you drop off your material, return to the scale house to get your receipt. On your way out, don’t forget to thank the staff for the amazing job they do in keeping Kawartha Lakes green, there’s no way we’d be able to do it without them!

Some food waste is unavoidable (bones, vegetable peels, egg shells, tea bags, coffee grounds) but a lot of food waste is avoidable and thrown out every day. Here are some helpful tips on how to limit your avoidable food waste: • Compost • Meal plan; make a shopping list and incorporate first-infirst-out practices in your fridge. • Repurpose vegetable scraps! Potato peels can be made into fries or chips, chopped broccoli stalks can be used in stir fries and soups and a medley of scraps can be use to make broth. Visit www.jumpinkawarthalakes.ca/RRR to find more ideas on at-home waste reduction or to share your own ideas. Jump in and join the conversation!

Did you know that you could cut-down on up to 30% of household waste by composting in your backyard? Backyard composting is a great way to reduce both your household’s carbon and landfill footprints. Not only that, but you can save on buying compost and soil for your garden by making your own! For tips on how to get started visit www.kawarthalakes.ca/backyard-composting.

August• 2023 Kawartha Lakes is made up of over 250 bodies of water and has over 600km of beautiful, natural trails to explore. It’s on every one of us to keep our amazing natural landscapes and green space as clean and healthy as possible for now and all future generations.

• Use reusable items whenever possible (reusable grocery bags, water bottles and food containers). • When enjoying all of the outdoor activities available across the municipality always use the “bring it in, bring it out method”. If it’s waste you brought in, then it’s waste you will bring out! • Always have a spare waste bag in your car to bring items home to throw away if a waste bin isn’t available. • Stay informed on when your curbside collection is. If you do come across areas littered with garbage or hazardous waste, please contact Kawartha Lakes by calling 705-324-9411 or completing the form at www. kawarthalakes.ca/reportit

September• 2023 September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

It’s important for Canadians from all walks of life to recognize these impacts and educate themselves on what happened in our past. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history along with the ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital aspect of reconciliation. In honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, be sure to show your support by wearing orange on September 30. If you’d like to learn more about the history of our land beyond the colonial perspective, visit www.trcbobcaygeon.org.

“Autumn Walk” by Christine Wood

The day honours the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools and their families and communities. It is a time for all Canadians to reflect on the devastating and long-lasting impact that Residential School systems have had on Indigenous peoples and communities across the country.

December• 2023 The holidays are the perfect time to consider reducing your household waste! Here are some helpful tips on how to get creative and reduce your holiday waste:

Where waste is unavoidable, keep these disposal tips in mind: • Non-metallic wrapping paper and cards are recyclable and can be placed with paper recycling. • Christmas trees are not collected curbside but can be disposed of as leaf and yard waste at landfills. • Shipping packages (bubble wrap, plastic, non-paper, Styrofoam) cannot be recycled.

“Nightfall” by Karen Richardson

• Instead of using wrapping paper, wrap gifts in recycled or reusable materials (newspaper, fabric, scarves, reusable grocery or even beeswax wraps). • Give experiences over things this year: look at excursions, outdoor adventure parks and getaways that you could enjoy together. • At the end of the month, prop up your real Christmas tree in your backyard. Evergreens make for great habitats for birds, hold moisture and improve soil as they decompose. You can even decorate them with pinecones filled with peanut butter, and suet for birds to enjoy.
