Town of South Bruce Peninsula Allenford

Hepworth

Provincial Highway 21 dissects Allenford leaving the north half in South Bruce Peninsula and the south half in Arran-Elderslie. A village located on the banks of the Sauble River, halfway between Owen Sound and Southampton, was named for its first settler, James Allen. The Allenford Curling Club is a constant hub of activity. Attend special events throughout the entire year or try curling in the winter. This small community has a post office, gas bar, restaurant, garage, hardware store, library, ball diamond, convenience store and several home renovation and construction contractors.

Hepworth honours the birthplace of John Wesley in Epworth, England. The "H" was added to the official spelling of Epworth to match the way the name was pronounced by William Spencer and the other English Settlers. Hepworth's crossroads lead to Sauble Beach on Lake Huron, the Bruce Peninsula and the Bruce Trail overlooking Georgian Bay, to Owen Sound and South Bruce's rolling countryside, diverse destinations all. This community has various businesses including a variety store and a gas station. You can rent canoes or buy a knapsack; or have your vehicle repaired, in Hepworth. Tim Horton's provides great coffee and a warm gathering spot. The Wilbur J. Cunningham Memorial Park hosts community ball activities, a playground for the little ones and an adjacent community centre available for rent. The community Post Office is located at Cindy's Variety. Those looking for some recreation opportunities can enjoy a round of golf at Northern Dunes, ski on the Sawmill CrossCountry Ski Trails, snowmobiling on the various trails or camping at Whispering Pines Campground.

Clavering Located on Provincial Highway #6, half way between Wiarton and Hepworth, Clavering is a small residential crossroads. Two-thirds of Clavering is located on the east side of the highway and in Georgian Bluffs, Grey County, the remainder is in the former Township of Amabel.

Colpoy's Bay The first settlers in Albemarle took up land to the north of Colpoy's Bay in 1857. The settlement of Colpoy’s Bay was named after Sir John Colpoy, an admiral in the British Navy. Trading became prominent in the settlement with the establishment of saw and grist mills and wharf facilities. Today, visitors can enjoy the public dock, tennis courts and access to the Bruce Ski Club trails. Try renting a cottage or enjoy a hike along the Bruce Trail.

Elsinore Mr. Sweetman, who was an Inspector in the post office department, suggested the name Elsinore as some members of the Royal Family were visiting the historic site of Elsinore in Denmark at that time, 1865. The Elsinore Community Centre is host to a number of community activities as well as available for rent for family reunions and social gatherings.

Hope Bay Hope Bay is nestled between Bruce Road 9 and the shores of Georgian Bay, 17 km north of Wiarton. Visitors can find a natural sand beach and access to the Bruce Trail and snowmobile trail network. The Hope Bay Forest Provincial Nature Reserve is a geologist’s heaven. Discover outcroppings of natural bedrock and subsurface karst pavement. The nature reserve is situated in the neighbouring municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. While in Hope Bay, enjoy its beautiful sunsets, peaceful beach, and great hiking, Hope Bay continues to be a relaxing retreat.

Red Bay and Howdenvale These communities are host to fantastic Lake Huron sunsets, excellent swimming, sailing, birding, stargazing, biking, wildflowers at Petrel Point, canoeing, snow shoeing and crosscountry skiing. Red Bay is located north of Oliphant and boast the prettiest sunsets in Ontario. The Red Bay Park is located on the Huron Shoreline at Red Bay. A small dock extends out into the lake allowing the adventurous to jump into the shallow sandy water. A large expanse of sand keeps the children entertained building sand castles and tunnels. Red Bay, one of the beautiful tranquil places you will find in South Bruce Peninsula.

Bluewater Park Pool AQUATIC REGISTRATION Saturday, June 9th, 10:00 am to 12:00 noon Town Hall Council Chambers

Moving to the next level of Red Cross Swim Kids The skills and strokes in the Red Cross Swim Kids levels are divided into a series of progressions that build on previous abilities. Once a swimmer has achieved the prerequisite ability, the swimmer will be ready for the next series of challenges. If a swimmer proceeds without building this solid base, he or she will find it more difficult to achieve success at the next stage. Your child will achieve physical developmental milestones at his or her own rate, which is important because not all children develop at the same rate. It is important to look at the successes achieved during each lesson set, knowing that taking a level again offers the opportunity to improve on the skills that are the building blocks for success at the next level. Your child’s instructor may recommend a change in level if they feel your child is registered in an inappropriate level. Staff reserve the right to move a child if circumstances dictate. Some levels are combined and run as one class. Participants are taught the content required for the level they are in.

Family Rate Starfish to Level 10: First two children of the same family in the same session pay full price. Each additional child of the same family in the same session (of equal or lesser valued lessons) pays half price. Group Lessons (one session), Swim Team and Junior Lifeguard: A child registered in all three programs (group lessons (one session), Swim Team and Junior Lifeguard) shall pay full price for the most expensive programs and half price for the lesser valued class.

Non-Resident Fees Residents of non-contributing municipalities are required to pay a $30.00 surcharge per individual per session, in addition to the stated fee, to a maximum of $60.00 per family per session.

After Level 10 - next steps for your child … Once your child has successfully completed Red Cross Swim Kids 10, he or she has plenty of options:  Junior Lifeguard: Serious fun for swimming 8 years & older who can swim at least 25m and tread water for 2 minutes, be comfortable in deep water, willing to participate in all activities and a competitive desire to improve skill levels and fitness. Action-packed for quick learners and those between levels or programs. Swimmers may also be introduced to competitive lifesaving activities.  Rookie, Ranger & Star Patrol: The Lifesaving Society Swim Patrol program is a three-level progressive series and is a Pre-Bronze program. Candidates earn recognition for success in content modules and for overall award achievement. The program aligns with the Red Cross program in improving aquatic safety through education. Children usually enter this program at age 7 to 12 years of age depending on their swimming ability and their interest  Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross: Recommended for 12 year olds for Bronze Star, then progress to Bronze Medallion and onto Bronze Cross, participants’ skills in and out of the water will prepare them for lifeguarding and instructing  National Lifeguard Service: For teens 16 years and older, National Lifeguard is Canada’s only nationally recognized lifeguard certification program and is the only certificate recognized by the province of Ontario for lifeguarding public pools.  Instructor Training: Once your child is 15 years of age, they can apply for our Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course. This course is the first step to becoming a Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Instructor, and prepares candidates to share their love of swimming with a new generation.

Piping Plovers Over the past 50 years, Piping Plovers vanished from almost all known nest sites on the Great Lakes, and were reduced to just a handful of pairs in northern Michigan. However, intensive management and protection in Michigan is succeeding and the young from this location are now helping to repopulate former breeding sites along Ontario’s Great Lakes shorelines. The Piping Plover is a sand-coloured, sparrow-sized shorebird that nests and feeds along coastal sand and gravel beaches. The adult has yellow-orange legs, a black band across the forehead from eye to eye, and a black ring around the neck. It runs in short starts and stops. When still, the Piping Plover blends extremely well with open, sandy beach habitats. The bird’s name is derived from its call notes, plaintive bell-like whistles which are often heard before the birds are seen. Piping Plovers arrive on their breeding grounds in Canada in late April or May. Males establish a territory and attract a mate with dramatic aerial and ground displays. They scrape a shallow nest-site in sand or gravel, which the female then inspects. Clutches usually contain 4 eggs. Both parents participate in the incubation of eggs and care of nestlings, though the young are able to find their own food within hours of hatching. Females can begin to breed at one year of age and will re-nest once or twice in a season if the eggs are destroyed, but raise only one brood per year. The main threat to the Piping Plover is human disturbance, since the sandy beaches where plovers live are also popular for human recreation which can destroy nests. Groomed beaches lack natural hiding places, making eggs and chicks vulnerable to predators such as foxes, cats, raccoons and gulls. Storm surges and severe weather can also destroy nests and harm chicks. If you’re visiting Sauble Beach where Piping Plovers are known to nest, obey all protective measures and signs. Walk near the shoreline rather than the dry sand near the back of the beach (where the birds like to nest), keep pets away, and do not drive offroad vehicles on beaches or dunes. Make sure to clean up after your visit, as leaving garbage or food on the beach can attract predators that may eat eggs and chicks. As with all wildlife, don’t disturb nests, young or adults. Be respectful and observe from a distance. The Piping Plover and its habitat are protected under Ontario’s Endangered Species Act (www.ontario.ca/speciesatrisk) which protects regulated species and their habitats and federally under the Migratory Birds Convention Act and Species at Risk Act. The National Piping Plover Recovery Team is spearheading implementation of a recovery plan to increase their population to healthier levels with the hope that future generations can also enjoy the Piping Plover.

CAMPFIRE SAFETY: Never leave a campfire unattended, choose a site with water access, make sure you are a safe distance from buildings (4 metres) and trees (3 metres), keep your campfire small and always make sure that it is completely extinguished. CIVIC ADDRESSING: Emergency responders rely on accurate civic addressing to support emergency services. Please ensure that your address is clearly visible from the roadway. SMOKE ALARMS, CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS, FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: Install working smoke alarms on every level of your home and inside or near every sleeping area.  Test your smoke alarms regularly, we suggest testing them weekly and replacing the batteries when you change your clock twice a year  Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years  Each home should install at least one carbon monoxide detector; these should also be tested regularly and replaced in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions  Fire Extinguishers should be kept in the kitchen and in the garage PLAN YOUR ESCAPE:  Make a plan that includes two escape routes from every room  Practice your plan  Designate a place to meet other members of your family outside  If you live in an apartment building, learn the evacuation plan  Most victims die from smoke inhalation. Smoke rises during a fire, if smoke is heavy crawl on your hands and knees to safety. Events in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula Doors Open 2012 – September 15th and 16th Doors Open Ontario is a province wide celebration of community heritage. Designed to create access, awareness and excitement about our heritage, Doors Open Ontario provides residents and visitors with a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy sometimes hidden and always interesting places and spaces in Ontario cities, towns and villages – and it's all free of charge! Join the Town of South Bruce Peninsula by touring the following 10 locations:

Barfoot’s Welding & Machine Shop This building was erected of local limestone around 1885 and has changed little since then. It has served many uses over the years. In 1900, it was a woolen mill consisting of three floors. For the past 50 years, it has operated as Barfoot's Welding and Machine Shop.

Colpoy’s Bay Community Hall The local Women's Institute erected Colpoy's Bay Hall in 1927 with the help of a $2,000 grant from the provincial government. Over the next 20 years, the women of the institute raised funds to pay off the balance of the costs the construction entailed. A Memorial Wheel in the hall displays the names of all donors.

The Corran – Spirit Rock Grey Sauble Conservation Area This former estate, once home to Alexander McNeill, MP for North Bruce from 1881 to 1901, had beautiful gardens and manicured lawns and orchards, and was a productive farm. The Corran, McNeill’s 17-room mansion, was furnished with oriental carvings and tapestries, and had book-lined walls. Grey Sauble Conservation bought the property in 1976. Shortly after, fire destroyed the mansion.

The Handicraft House Trading Post For over 50 years, a 1,600-pound stuffed Kodiak bear has stood at the entrance to the Handicraft House. The previous owner, Colonel Ed Hamilton, brought the bear from Alaska in 1958 in the hope that it would attract tourists. The current owner tries to maintain the "old trading post" atmosphere by keeping the traditional décor intact and by stocking northern Canadiana merchandise.

Heritage Heights (former Wiarton District High School) The former Wiarton and District High School is a unique and outstanding example of stone-built public architecture. The design of this building, with its triple windows and Romanesque features, incorporates the concept of education as one of the pillars of the Empire. Note the spectacular lantern dome atop the roof, capped with a locally made iron weather vane.

Mar Women’s Institute The current cement-block building, built in 1907, replaced earlier log or frame schools, the first of which was constructed in 1807. In 1963, Mar School was closed and students were bused to Wiarton. Mar Women's Institute maintains the former school building and records local Mar history. Meetings, potlucks and fish dinners are held here regularly.

Paintings of the Bruce – Paul Duff Gallery Over 150 of Paul Duff’s paintings of local flora and fauna and woodland and marine scenes showing the pristine beauty of the Bruce Peninsula are displayed in this gallery. Duff is an internationally known Canadian painter whose work hangs in the national galleries of Canada, Scotland and Brazil, as well as several prestigious private collections.

St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, erected in 1891, is a cruciform red-brick building. The sanctuary features a vaulted wood ceiling, 19th-century McCausland stained-glass windows (the oldest stained-glass window makers in North America) and a 1906 Breckels & Matthews pipe organ that has been recognized as historically significant in both Canada and the United States.

The Bruce Beckons A gift shop established here in 1979 outgrew the small Ontario log cabin in which it had been housed. In its place, in 1996, this wonderful log farmhouse from Lévis, Quebec, dating from around 1800, was dismantled and reassembled on this site, bringing its Quebec history with it. The house retains its original logs, windows, front door and rafters.

Wiarton Train Station This 1904 Canadian National Railway station closed in 1960. It was moved from its former site to Bluewater Park in 1971. Built entirely of wood in combined chateau and stick styles, the station has Queen Anne towers on its bay side and magnificent coffered tongue-and-groove ceilings. It now houses the heritage interpretive centre and gallery. Photos courtesy of Chris Graham – postcard.wiarton.ca
