Town of South Bruce Peninsula Council A Message from the Mayor With another Bruce Peninsula winter now a faint memory, it's exciting to plan for the long, mellow summer days we all love so much. As my second summer season as Mayor, I am particularly enjoying the energy and inspiration which comes from our beautiful corner of the world. The Town of South Bruce Peninsula, this place where we live and work and play, is special in so many ways and we're fortunate to have a wide variety of opportunities where we can explore our individual interests. From organized sports to social clubs to activities for the sports and fitness enthusiasts, there's an outlet available where we can connect, learn new skills and continue to develop the best person we can be. It's no secret that important contributors to health and fitness are staying active and being involved. Here in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, the land, the water and even the air are ours to explore. Miles of sandy beach and shoreline, and a wide variety of trails keep our walkers, runners and hikers happy. Beautiful country roads and our picturesque hamlets make for excellent bike rides. We can entertain ourselves endlessly in and on the water as we swim and sail, paddle board and kayak. And as for the air? Hang-gliding anyone?

We connect with our community and meet interesting people when we get involved in organized activities. When we join a new club or try a new sport or class, we're also involved in the nourishing activities of life-long learning and fitness development which contribute so strongly to our sense of well-being and our overall health. So, join in.... leaf through the pages of this guide and be inspired. Push your fitness levels a little with a new sport. Learn a new skill. Try a new activity! Experience the magic which this beautiful natural area offers and know that you're doing something wonderful for yourself. There's always room to learn more, do more, share more. The Wiarton Willie Festival is the largest winter festival in the Grey-Bruce Region. The festivities and excitement of February 2 draws international media coverage and thousands of visitors and residents annually to witness prediction morning and enjoy the festivities which include fun for the whole family. Town of South Bruce Peninsula Sauble Beach: Back to the Beach! Sauble Beach is the second longest freshwater beach in the world and is the perfect destination for your vacation or a day of fun! Just imagine you could be strolling down the 11 km of beaches or enjoy an ice cream while sitting on your beach towel with the waves lapping against your feet. Perhaps you would prefer to watch as the cars zoom past you at the Sauble Speedway, or take in an afternoon of golf at one of the local courses. Town of South Bruce Peninsula Allenford Provincial Highway 21 dissects Allenford leaving the north half in South Bruce Peninsula and the south half in Arran-Elderslie. A village located on the banks of the Sauble River, halfway between Owen Sound and Southampton, was named for its first settler, James Allen. The Allenford Curling Club is a constant hub of activity. Attend special events throughout the entire year or try curling in the winter. This small community has a post office, gas bar, restaurant, garage, hardware store, ball diamond, convenience store and several home renovation and construction contractors.

Clavering Located on Provincial Highway #6, half way between Wiarton and Hepworth, Clavering is a small residential crossroads. Two-thirds of Clavering is located on the east

Colpoy's Bay The first settlers in Albemarle took up land to the north of Colpoy's Bay in 1857. The settlement of Colpoy’s Bay was named after Sir John Colpoy, an admiral in the British Navy. Trading became prominent in the settlement with the establishment of saw and grist mills and wharf facilities. Today, visitors can enjoy the public dock, tennis courts and access to the Bruce Ski Club trails. Try renting a cottage or enjoy a hike along the Bruce Trail.

Elsinore Mr. Sweetman, who was an Inspector in the post office department, suggested the name Elsinore as some members of the Royal Family were visiting the historic site of Elsinore in Denmark at that time, 1865. The Elsinore Community Centre is host to a number of community activities as well as available for rent for family reunions and social gatherings.

Hepworth Hepworth honours the birthplace of John Wesley in Epworth, England. The "H" was added to the official spelling of Epworth to match the way the name was pronounced by William Spencer and the other English Settlers. Hepworth's crossroads lead to Sauble Beach on Lake Huron, the Bruce Peninsula and the Bruce Trail overlooking Georgian Bay, to Owen Sound and South Bruce's rolling countryside, diverse destinations all. This community has various businesses including a variety store and a gas station. You can rent canoes or buy a knapsack; or have your vehicle repaired, in Hepworth. Tim Horton's provides great coffee and a warm gathering spot. The Wilbur J. Cunningham Memorial Park hosts community ball activities, a playground for the little ones. The community Post Office is located at Cindy's Variety. Those looking for some recreation opportunities can enjoy a round of golf at Northern Dunes, ski on the Sawmill Cross-Country Ski Trails, snowmobiling on the various trails or camping at Whispering Pines Campground.

Hope Bay Hope Bay is nestled between Bruce Road 9 and the shores of Georgian Bay, 17 km north of Wiarton. Visitors can find a natural sand beach and access to the Bruce

Town of South Bruce Peninsula Trail and snowmobile trail network. The Hope Bay Forest Provincial Nature Reserve is a geologist’s heaven. Discover outcroppings of natural bedrock and subsurface karst pavement. The nature reserve is situated in the neighbouring municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. While in Hope Bay, enjoy its beautiful sunsets, peaceful beach, and great hiking, Hope Bay continues to be a relaxing retreat.

Mar Mar has traditionally been a service center for the local area and a rest stop for those on their way up and down the peninsula. The Hamlet of Mar has a gas bar, convenience store and restaurant. Need some information, ask one of the friendly faces who serve you. Motels, bed and breakfast facilities and restaurants serve the public year round. Looking for something to do on a Sunday? Explore the Handicraft House Market for all sorts of treasures.

Oliphant Located on the Huron shoreline just north of Oliphant, the Oliphant Fen boardwalk brings a unique environmental area to life. Interpretive signs explain the various plant life as you wind your way back to the bush line. Completely

wheelchair and stroller proof the boardwalk is a great stop for children of all ages. Children do need to stay on the boardwalk so they don’t damage the plants or get their feet wet. Community facilities include a marina, dock, ball diamond and great swimming areas.

Park Head Park Head is located 4km south of Hepworth on Bruce Road 10. First settled in 1855, the Sauble River winds through this quiet community. Various community dinners take place at the Community Centre which is also available for rent. A game of pick up at the ball diamond plus the children can enjoy themselves at the playground.

Purple Valley For some old fashioned country fun, don’t miss the Purple Valley Maple Syrup Festival held Easter Saturday at the Purple Valley Community Center – 565 Purple Valley Road, 15 km North East of Wiarton. Enjoy open-air live music, local vendors, community bake table and turkey shoot. Kids can play on hay bales, participate in outdoor games and can fill their tummies together with their family with locally produced syrup served on a plate of hot pancakes and Sullivan’s breakfast sausage. If you are lucky you’ll get a photo opportunity with Wiarton Willie and the Easter Bunny. No need to drive – the Festival runs free buses from downtown Wiarton to and from the site all day. As the sun goes down in the Valley, the dancing begins – once you’ve experienced a Purple Valley Stomp, you’ll always be back to hear house band Midnight Blue for years to come!

Red Bay and Howdenvale These communities are host to fantastic Lake Huron sunsets, excellent swimming, sailing, birding, stargazing, biking, and wildflowers at Petrel Point, canoeing, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing. Red Bay is located north of Oliphant and boast the prettiest sunsets in Ontario. The Red Bay Park is located on the Huron Shoreline at Red Bay. A small dock extends out into the lake allowing the adventurous to jump into the shallow sandy water. A large expanse of sand keeps the children entertained building sand castles and tunnels. Red Bay, one of the beautiful tranquil places you will find in South Bruce Peninsula.

Instructors and Assistant Instructors After Level 10 - next steps for your All classes will be taught by a fully-certified Red Cross Instructor. child … Our Instructors have spent over 200 hours taking courses and volunteering in Aquatic Instructional Programs to prepare them to teach your children.

First Lesson In our efforts to ensure that your child receives the best possible instruction, we ask that you bring your child’s most recent report card with him/her to the first session. This will help their instructor tailor their classes to effectively meet the needs of each child.

Moving to the next level of Red Cross Swim Kids The skills and strokes in the Red Cross Swim Kids levels are divided into a series of progressions that build on previous abilities. Once a swimmer has achieved the prerequisite ability, the swimmer will be ready for the next series of challenges. If a swimmer proceeds without building this solid base, he or she will find it more difficult to achieve success at the next stage. Your child will achieve physical developmental milestones at his or her own rate, which is important because not all children develop at the same rate. It is important to look at the successes achieved during each lesson set, knowing that taking a level again offers the opportunity to improve on the skills that are the building blocks for success at the next level. Your child’s instructor may recommend a change in level if they feel your child is registered in an inappropriate level. Staff reserve the right to move a child if circumstances dictate. Some levels are combined and run as one class. Participants are taught the content required for the level they are in.

Once your child has successfully completed Red Cross Swim Kids 10, he or she has plenty of options: • Junior Lifeguard • Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross • National Lifeguard Service • Instructor Training

Inclement Weather In the event of rain, classes will be held as scheduled. If there is thunder and lightning, water safety will be taught in the change rooms.

Pool Closure In the event of pool closure due to mechanical failure, staff will contact Parent/Guardian as soon as possible.

Questions or Concerns? The Pool Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor are on duty at all times during the lessons. They are the lesson experts and are available to answer your questions and assist with any concerns. Please feel free to speak with the Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor immediately if you have a concern rather than waiting until the last class. Parents/Guardians are welcome to watch their child’s swimming lessons from the viewing area outside the pool.

Bronze Star

Bronze Star/Basic First Aid with CPR-A Participants work on problem solving, decision making skills and develop water smart confidence. They learn CPR and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. Minimum pre-requisite: Must have completed Level 7, able to swim 100m.

Bronze Medallion

Bronze Medallion/Emergency First Aid with CPR-B This course develops physical fitness, decision-making and judgment skills for water rescue. First Aid, rescue breathing, tows, carries and releases are some of the skills covered. Minimum pre-requisite: Must have completed Bronze Star, 13 years of age

Bronze Cross

Bronze Cross/Standard First Aid/CPR-C This course teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures, teamwork and the use of special equipment. Spinal injury management techniques are also covered. Minimum pre-requisite: Must have completed Bronze Medallion/Emergency First Aid/CPR-B

A new Tennis Canada approved program designed to teach tennis with unique methods. Children talk about animals and learn how to “walk the dog”, the “elephant trunk ball toss” and the “rocket ship blast off”. A gentle warm-up and lots of fun! Parents are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Students will learn basic strokes including the forehand, backhand, volley, overhand and serve. Lessons will include a tennis movement warm-up with music and a cool down at the end of class. Tennis scoring, etiquette and rules will be incorporated into play. A new tennis racquet is included in the fee. Tennis balls will be provided. Consistency, precision and finally power will be the direction given to the students.

Ryusei Karate-Do is a traditional style of karate that combines the punches, kicks, strikes and blocks typical of karate as well as throws, joint locks and pressure point tactics. CAMPFIRE SAFETY: Never leave a campfire unattended, choose a site with water access, make sure you are a safe distance from buildings, trees and other combustibles (4 meters), keep your campfire contained in a non-combustible burning device (i.e. tire rim) and a maximum size of 2 feet x 2 feet x 2 feet. Only burn clean dry wood no larger than the burning device and always make sure that it is completely extinguished before leaving the site. CIVIC ADDRESSING: Emergency responders rely on accurate civic addressing to support emergency services. Please ensure that your address is clearly visible from the roadway. SMOKE ALARMS, CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS, AND FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: • Install working Smoke Alarms on every level of your home and outside every sleeping area. Each home with a fuel burning appliance must install at least one Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm outside all sleeping areas. • Test each alarm regularly & replace the batteries when you change your clocks 2 times each year. • Replace all alarms in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions (normally every 5-10 years). • Fire Extinguishers should be kept in the kitchen and in the garage and everyone in the household should know how to use them. PLAN YOUR ESCAPE: • Make a plan that includes two escape routes from every room. • In a real fire you may have as little at 2 minutes to escape the home safely. • Practice and time your plan at least 2 times each year & make it as realistic as possible. • Designate a place to meet other members of your family outside. • If you live in an apartment building, learn the evacuation plan. • Most victims die from smoke inhalation. Smoke rises during a fire, if smoke is heavy crawl on your hands and knees to safety. The light means that a Fire Fighter is responding to an emergency in his/her personal vehicle, so please pull over to the right and allow him/her to pass. • Please be aware of fire hydrants on or near your property when clearing snow or parking, valuable time can be lost if we must work around cars or clear snow on our arrival.

The garden beds are ready to be planted. You plant the seeds or plants you want to grow. There are various tools available in the garden shed as well as a hose to water.

What Can I Grow? It’s amazing what you can grow! Vegetables, flowers, herbs and much more. Speak with other gardeners to find out what plants have grown well for them. Grow the things you love to eat or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can try to grow something just for fun!

Adopt-A-Garden The Adopt-a-Garden Program in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula is an opportunity for the community to become involved in the maintenance and creation of existing garden areas in the numerous open spaces and community parks. The program is open to businesses, individuals, and organizations/clubs. Gardeners would maintain the adopted garden from May to October, maintain and general clean-up and beautification of existing gardens on public lands and weed control. The Town will be responsible for removal of the excess weeds and litter the gardeners have removed.
