NEXT-GEN MCUS ENABLE BETTER DESIGN TECHNIQUES, ADD FUNCTIONALITY AND USE LESS POWER DO MORE WITH lESS POWER In case you haven’t noticed, it seems that everything around us is getting smarter and connected to one thing or another. your shoes now have sensors that can tell you how to improve your running time by displaying your pace on your smart phone. your scale can automatically save your weight to your cloud–based tracking application, and it can let you know why that last doughnut you ate was a bad idea - via an alert on your smart phone. your home security system can inform you about a leak in your garage via text message, thanks to a small wireless sensor placed next to the water heater. The rise in popularity of portable batterypowered applications has increased exponentially, thanks to the technological advances over time. Engineers are constantly being pushed to increase product functionality while reducing its overall dimensions, for each successive design. These additional features put a bigger demand on the system power source. The challenge becomes how to implement these new functions while extending the battery life, all in a smaller footprint. The conventional approach for batterypowered application design is to keep as many modules in a low-power state for as long as possible, occasionally waking up to perform the required tasks before returning to sleep mode. In a complex design with multiple mCu/mPus and components, a low pin count 8-bit microcontroller is often used as the system supervisor, to perform housekeeping tasks such as turning on and 6

The rise in popularity of portable, battery-powered applications over the years has pushed designers to add more features into smaller form factors. This increase in functions, particularly wireless communication, puts a bigger demand on the system power source. The challenge becomes how to implement the desired system functions while extending the battery life. with the help of the most recent advances in microcontroller functionality, including various integrated features and peripherals, power management in embedded designs has become smarter and easier to implement. These mCus have also enabled better design techniques. off modules, as needed, to maximize the power efficiency. Still, the majority of designs have only one main microcontroller with a host of integrated peripherals to implement the required system functions. Therefore, the power consumption of that microcontroller becomes a critical parameter. however, not all microcontrollers are made the same when it comes to lowpower performance. This is where an 8-bit microcontroller can outshine a 32-bit device in many cases. Some 8-bit mCus consume as little as 20nA in the lowest power setting, while 32-bit bottoms out around 10 to 20 times higher, at best. There are a number of ways to wake up the microcontroller from sleep mode. using the microcontroller’s internal timers to wake up

the system periodically is a common practice. The timer can be configured to trigger an interrupt after it overflows. A 16-bit timer with 1:8 pre-scaler, running off the internal, low-power 31khz oscillator (or with an external crystal) can keep the device in sleep for about 17 seconds. Another option is to use the mCu’s watchdog Timer (wDT), ideally with a maximum idle time of 256 seconds while consuming around 440nA. (Once again, a typical 32-bit mCu with wDT enabled consumes at least 3 times the current of an 8-bit mCu.) Take an application that doesn’t need to wake up frequently, such as an environmental monitor that wakes up roughly every four hours to read the humidity sensor before going back to sleep again.

MCUs

But the power consumption of this implementation can be reduced further by 50% to around 2.3µA, by using an external 32khz crystal connected to the secondary oscillator (SOSC) at a slightly higher cost.. External interrupt sources can also be used to wake up the microcontroller, such as a switch or sensor. Some of the larger mCu/mPus have multiple interrupts with priority levels, but these features are often not present in most of the low pin count mCus on the market.

specific state, in order to wake up the CPu to check the condition, very often it was awakened due to one signal change, only to find the other signals had not yet occurred. It is now possible to configure and combine the available logic functions and state machines in the CLC, or even multiple CLC modules, to create specific wake-up conditions that avoid frequent false triggers and unnecessary power drain. The device wake up time can be a large component of the “running” time in the

echnology Does this mean that we must wake up more frequently, due to the internal timer limitations? Not necessarily. One option is to use a real Time Clock (rTC) and crystal that can provide accurate time keeping in terms of hours, days, months and even years, if needed. Since not all microcontrollers offer an integrated rTC and crystal, often for cost reasons, a stand-alone rTC can also be considered. CORE-INDEPENDENT PERIPHERAlS Another option is to extend the idle period without any additional components or power penalty is to use the unique peripherals found in some next-generation 8-bit microcontrollers (such as microchip Technology’s PIC® mCus). For example, designers can connect one of these mCu’s Configurable Logic Cells (CLCs) and its Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO) to the 16-bit timer, in order to extend the period from 17 seconds to 205 days, before triggering an interrupt to wake up the mCu (See Figure 1). Of course, it is rare for an application to have a need to remain idle for such long period, but the capability is present if necessary. when using an internal low power (31khz) oscillator to feed the resulting (long) timer, the lowest cost solution can be achieved. www.international.electronica-azi.ro

Figure 1 An 8-bit microcontroller’s core-independent peripherals are being used to extend the idle period to 205 days, without any additional components or power penalty.

Figure 2 A graphic representation of a microcontroller’s current consumption over time. remember the Configurable Logic Cell module that we used to extend the timer period in the previous example? Not only can it be used to create extra interrupt sources when the mCu has only one system INT, the CLC also allows designers to add conditional or sequential logic to the wake-up routine; making it smarter with no additional current draw. If the system requires a number of signals to represent a

periodic profile of an application. while for an 8-bit microcontroller internal oscillator this is typically limited to a handful of clock cycles (3-5 cycles corresponding to 200ns to 1us), in a 32-bit architecture, employing deep-sleep techniques to limit leakage currents, it becomes a matter of tens of microseconds, often voiding any/all benefits resulting from the subsequent typical faster execution speed. 7

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS

while we would like to do everything in sleep mode, certain tasks must be performed in active mode where the mCu core consumes the highest amount of power relative to all other modules. This is where things can get a bit tricky. Figure 2 is a simplified graphic representation of the system current consumption over time. The area under the current-consumption line represents the total discharge over time, measured in Coulombs. If the sum of all the areas under the sleep-mode period is much greater than the active mode, then the sleep-current value is more critical since most of the energy consumption takes place in a low-power mode. vice versa, if the sum of the area under the active-mode period is significantly higher, then the sleep current value and the time spent in sleep mode become irrelevant. Applications with wireless communication, such as wi-Fi® or Bluetooth® LE, are particularly challenging systems in which to reduce power consumption. Designers of these systems must consider how much data is transmitted or received, since this will directly impact the overall current consumption. wireless modules can be used in “Beacon Mode,” to wake up periodically and search for signals; or they can go into

NEWS

standby mode when not in use. In such wireless systems the mCu processing speed is actually irrelevant as the application is most often I/O bound, but the mCu wake up time impacts significantly the application profile as the radio circuitry power consumption (typically 10-20mA) is extended and ends up dominating the application budget. Analog sensors require the use of the mCu’s on-chip ADC module. Typically, the time needed for ADC sampling is much longer than the conversion time. The more time spent in active mode, the more current is consumed. however, some mCus have ADC modules that allow conversions in sleep mode, which saves power by minimizing the time spent in active mode. Some mCus integrate a wide variety of low-power active modes. These modes provide the option to turn off or reduce the speed of the core processor, while selectively keeping the system clock active for the on-chip peripherals. One frequently heard statement is “the higher the performance of the core, the faster the execution of the tasks, then the sooner it can return to sleep mode.” while this might be true in some cases, there is a flaw to this logic. we have to

microchip announces the mPLAB® ICD 4, an in-circuit programming and debugging development tool for microchip’s PIC® microcontroller and dsPIC® digital signal controller portfolios. The mPLAB ICD 4 includes all the features of the popular mPLAB ICD 3 debugger while adding increased speed through a faster processor and increased rAm. The mPLAB ICD 4’s significant improvement in speed is accomplished through a 32-bit mCu running at 300 mhz. Faster processing, together with an increased buffer memory of 2 mB, results in a product that is up to twice as fast as its predecessor. The puck-shaped mPLAB ICD 4 is housed in a durable, black case with a brushed aluminum top and is accented with an LED light strip to indicate debugging status. The tool offers the following features: • A wider target voltage range, from 1.20 to 5.5v • An optional 1 Amp of power (using an external power supply) • Selectable pull-up/pull-down option to the target interface • Configurable interface speed for optimised programming and debugging • Intelligent, robust interface with fault detection and immunity • JTAG debugging capability 8

remember that the core consumes more power than any other module in the mCu. Additionally, all of the tasks that require the core must be executed sequentially (FIFO), regardless of the speed. Therefore, the core can’t be turned off until the last task is completed. when a microcontroller can perform some of the required tasks in parallel, using integrated peripherals that can operate independently of the core, then it makes the speed of the core irrelevant while significantly reducing the overall power usage. Core independent peripherals are fully functional while the mCu’s core is in sleep mode. Designing battery-powered applications has become more complex, due to their increasing functionality. Engineers should analyze and fully understand the currentconsumption profile of each component in different power and activity modes, in order to achieve the highest battery usage efficiency. The core independent peripheral set found in the next generation of 8-bit microcontrollers enable engineers to be creative with their designs, without sacrificing performance.

WIRElESS DESIGN

RADAR SEnSORS AT CODICO radar sensors emit electromagnetic waves and operate on the basis of different physical principles, such as Doppler, FSk (frequency shift keying) Doppler, and FmCw (frequency modulated continuous wave). The Doppler sensor uses a transmitter antenna to emit microwaves at a specific frequency and a receiver antenna to receive the waves reflected from the moving object. As a result of the Doppler effect, the movement of the reflecting object causes the frequency of the reflected wave to change, and this is evaluated in the sensor. FSk Doppler uses two different frequencies for the emitted wave, which are emitted alternately at a pre-defined time interval. here, too, the Doppler frequency is proportional to the speed of the moving object. The two different frequencies generate two different Doppler frequencies characterized by a phase shift. This phase shift can be used to assess the distance to the moving object. If the object is not moving, it is not possible to determine the distance. In the case of FmCw, microwaves are emitted using a linearly modulated frequency. here, the reflected wave shows a time delay. This delay is proportional to the distance and can thus be evaluated in the sensor. In summary, this allows for the following measurements: using the Doppler principle, it is possible to measure a moving object and its speed over a large area. FSk Doppler helps determine the distance and speed of a moving object. A stationary object, however, is not ÂťvisibleÂŤ to such a

sensor. FmCw makes it possible to measure stationary objects and their distance. Previously, only modules which functioned according to one of the above principles were available in the market. Today's modules sometimes feature several modes. NJr has been developing radar sensors for many years and is well-known for its wide range of sensors. For instance, the NJr4265 module, which functions solely as a Doppler and can thus only detect motion. This module works in the 24Ghz band, and both the antenna and the mCu are integrated in the module. The module features an uArT interface for communication. It was designed for the detection of objects moving slowly and at a close distance to the sensor, such as, for instance, pedestrians. In the case of NJr4265, close distance means around 10m. Typical applications include surveillance modules for the detection of persons, e.g. in a warehouse, but also as special modules for presence detection in beverage dispensing units or other devices, and for light control in building automation systems. If distance measurement is required, NJr will also offer a module with FSk Doppler and FmCw mode. Possible applications can be found in traffic infrastructure (such as electronic toll systems, parking space management systems) and in safety and

security (such as collision detection, area monitoring). For these applications, NJr offers the NJr4234, which works both in FSk Doppler mode and in FmCw mode. In the first development stage, it will be able to measure the distance of a moving object. In this module, both antenna and microcontroller are on board. A serial interface is available for the connection to the application. This is used for the transfer of the parameters to the module, and of

information from the module to the host. Depending on the required detection range, two versions will be available, one for 5m and one for 30m. NJr will first launch the module for 30m on the market. POE POWER DISTRIBUTION

At CODICO: Focus on - The ever shrinking world of POE from SILVERTEL Introducing Ag9924 & Ag5324 – the latest modules in the Ag9900m and Ag5300 series! These two series of modules are respectively the smallest POE 12w IEEE802.3af and POE+24w IEEE802.3at PD solutions in the world. As POE becomes ever more widely adopted, it is being used in a broader range of applications than ever before. Industrial control & automation, IP cameras, IP audio, hD audio visual (including hD BaseT) and access control are all areas where POE usage has been dramatically increasing. however, there are a number of these types of applications that require 24v as opposed to the more stan-

dard 12v or 5v typically used by devices deriving power from POE. with POE being an inherently safe technology from a voltage distribution point of view (typically at 48v – so well below the SELv limits), it is clear that this has additional benefits when used in IoT, audio visual applications and household devices. with no mains voltages present, and no mains wiring needed, device or product installations are both inherently safe, simple and relatively low cost to carry out, with simple CAT5/6 cabling all that is required. when looked at in relation to the new IEC/EN60335 and IEC/EN62368 standards (successor of the currently valid IEC/ EN60950), POE power distribution at a nominal 48v is extremely advantageous cost wise and respectively in terms of ease of design for safety and meeting the requirements of these new standards. with all SILvErTEL’s modules rigorously designed to include 1.5kv impulse isolation to meet IEEE and safety regulations you can be assured that your product will be able to pass the requirements of the new standards. The tiny, ultra-miniature Ag9900m series POE PD module is truly the smallest POE module and POE solution in the world. The addition of a 24v option means the advantages of this new technology are now available to every possible POE application and designer. Significantly smaller in footprint than is possible using discrete component design, (and 40% smaller even than the Ag9800m series) yet capable of delivering up to 12w of power, while rated for up to

www.international.electronica-azi.ro

9w at 85°C, it packs an incredible performance into the smallest of spaces. Similarly, for Ag5324, with the only other 24v POE+ module (Ag5100) available from SILvErTEL being around 35% more expensive and 100% bigger footprint, the new module clearly provides significant advantages. Following the Ag9900m SILvErTEL focusses on their core competencies miniaturisation and cost optimization. The full Ag9900 series is accessible at CODICO and now includes 3.3v, 5v, 12v and 24v options. Each of these is also available in an over-temperature protected power de-rated (9w @ 12v & 24v; 6w @ 5v and 4.5w @ 3.3v for 85°C operation) industrial temperature version. The so called Ag9900mT modules, as well as the Ag5324 are available from April 2017 onwards for sampling. Achieving Energy Savings and Long Distances for the IoT – the new Radio Chip from STMicroelectronics The S2-LP enables objects to be networked and made smart for up to ten years without a battery change. In receiver mode, it consumes just 6.7 mA, while in transmitter mode at 10 dBm, it consumes just 10 mA. In sleep and standby mode, it uses barely 600 and 350 nA respectively. “This means that the S2-LP actually has a unique selling point on the market,” explains René Hermanns, Product manager for wireless Technology at rutronik. “Values as low as this are not easy to achieve, and only a few manufacturers have the expertise required for this, for instance in the design of low-energy HF analog circuits or for integration with digital functional segments for the baseband, because energy efficiency must not come at the expense of operational reliability or connection stability – an endeavor in which ST has succeeded with the S2-LP.” with these features, the transceiver is ideal for networked devices such as alarm systems, monitoring equipment and smart energy meter solutions, as well as for building automation, industrial monitoring and control systems, and systems for lighting, traffic and parking space management in smart city applications. It is especially recommended for any application in which larger distances need to be covered, for instance to integrate outdoor sensors directly into the cloud without the need for a detour via a local gateway. “When such sensors are distributed so widely over a larger area and are often hard to reach, the very long battery life also helps to reduce maintenance costs significantly,” rené hermanns notes. 12

wireless communication is a key aspect of any IoT application, but in many fields, it also needs to be able to cover larger distances while remaining as energy-efficient as possible. This is why rutronik is catering to the field between traditional short-range wireless communication and mobile communication technology with the new S2-LP radio chip from STmicroelectronics.

IOT APPlICATIONS

The programmable radio chip operates in license-free sub-gigahertz frequency bands and can be adapted to the requirements of individual continents accordingly. Examples of popular communication protocols used on the chip include wireless m-Bus, Sigfox, 6LowPAN and IEEE 802.15.4g, which is suitable for energy management and process control applications and therefore provides a basis for future smart grids.

Sigfox is designed to cover large distances of up to 50 km over open terrain and up to 10 km in built environments, with low data rates of 12 bytes per message and low power consumption. It operates in the sub-Ghz frequency band – at 868 mhz in Europe – using narrow-band technology with BPSk for modulation.

in the IoT segment. This includes the STm32 development infrastructure with prototype boards and a broad range of software tools and resources. “But the job isn’t done with the component alone,” explains rené hermanns. “For us, a wireless solution is only ideal if the transmis-

“This allows the S2-LP to be flexibly deployed for multiple ISM frequency bands while using the globally standard physical layer and everything above it.” Because it operates on a very narrow band of just a few kilohertz, much less energy is required for data modulation than most other wireless technologies, which usually require between 1 mhz and 20 mhz. with high-power signals of up to 16 dBm, the transceiver also ensures reliable data communication over long distances. Depending on environmental conditions, its receiver sensitivity of -130 dBm allows for transmission distances of several dozen kilometers, providing large-scale network coverage.

An end device equipped with Sigfox technology supplies its data to Sigfox base stations, which then forward it to the relevant cloud services for processing. From there, the results can be sent for display on any end device. “A SIM card is not necessary with Sigfox. The usage fee is dependent on how many messages are sent per day. It normally comes to between one and ten euros a year per end device,” rutronik's wireless specialist adds.

RElIABlE, ENERGY-EffICIENT AND COST-EffECTIVE THANKS TO SIGfOX INTEGRATION “For devices with low data traffic, Sigfox is especially interesting, as it was developed specifically for that purpose. Thanks to the integration of Sigfox in the S2-LP, IoT connectivity with the radio chip is made more reliable, more efficient and more cost-effective. System designers also benefit from the large Sigfox ecosystem,” according to rené hermanns. “While the infrastructure is still in development, many countries in Europe are already covered and Sigfox is cooperating with a number of major network operators to ensure a fast, global roll-out.”

sion protocol, the application profiles, the security aspects and certifications are a perfect match for the application in question. This is where we both support and advise our customers in relation to standards, compatibility and consortiums. And of course, the other hardware needs to be wellattuned to it.”

Depending on the programmed protocol, STmicroelectronics’ new transceiver supports networks with point-to-point, star and mesh topologies, thus offering high flexibility for networked objects. The S2-LP and the feature-rich Software Development kit (SDk) are both available from rutronik, the official franchise partner of STmicroelectronics. It is already Sigfox-certified, meaning the designs for evaluation purposes and easy prototyping can be connected to the Sigfox network immediately. The SDk is compatible with the STm32 microcontroller family, which is already widespread

Analysts anticipate around three billion LPwA connections by 2023. For customers, NB-IoT enables new applications by providing a low cost, low power solution with wide area coverage and deep indoor penetration. NB-IOT fOR GAS AND WATER METERS Battery-powered NB-IoT modules need no power connection, deliver deep indoor penetration, and thereby establish a reliable connection even in areas where mobile reception is poor. The provider is able to read the meter remotely and the end customer does not have to stay at home in order to wait for the meter reader to come by. NB-IOT fOR CONNECTING STREET lIGHTS In Smart Cities, NB-IoT technology can be used in street lighting. Lamp posts fitted with appropriate modules can be switched on and off or dimmed remotely and can trigger an alarm if they malfunction. NB-IOT fOR PARKING SPACES Searching for a parking spot in a crowded city center can at times be annoying and time-consuming. According to studies, drivers aimlessly looking for a place to park cause up to 30 percent of all urban traffic congestion – not to mention the environmental cost and wasted fuel. But a smart parking solution could solve these problems. Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) with its characteristics is a suitable technology for smart parking in the city. NB-IOT fOR RUBBISH REMOVAl In waste disposal, garbage cans fitted with NB-IoT modules alert a control center when they are full. As a consequence,

waste disposal companies can optimize vehicle routes and reduce costs.

NB-IOT fOR HYDRANT hydrants equipped with NB-IoT modules can trigger alarm and send the information to the hydrant monitoring center if people leak and steal water. Once the fire happens, the hydrants with NB-IoT modules can be positioned timely and quickly, which will improve the efficiency of fire extinction.

NB-IOT fOR MONITORING lIVESTOCK AND WOODS NB-IoT technology is also suitable for agricultural use where there is no power supply or where network coverage is poor. In irrigation of fields or plantations, tank levels, pump pressure and flow rates are measured. The location and health of livestock can be monitored too, thereby preventing inter alia the spread of diseases. In forestry, low-cost sensors can be distributed in large numbers in the woods to report information such as temperature, smoke development or wind direction. NB-IOT fOR TRACKING NB-IoT is suitable for locating pets or valuables. In order to not lose sight of a pet or an expensive bike, an NB-IoT module can be a low-cost alternative to a GSm tracker. POWER DESIGN

Power Revolution at CODICO POwEr INTEGrATIONS revolutionises Auxiliary and Standby Power Supply Design with the 900V InnoSwitch-EP Family when we look at the available switching power topologies there are many types that have evolved to suit specific requirements like higher power, improved efficiency, lower cost or reduced size but few can be considered revolutionary. The InnoSwitch™ family of power switching ICs from Power Integrations combine new technical innovations in power semiconductors that will revolutionise power supply design. This new high voltage Cv/CC flyback switching IC family features an integrated 900v power mOSFET, synchronous rectification and a precise secondary-side controller. Like all of the Inno-Switch families, the new InnoSwitch-EP ICs employ POwEr INTEGrATIONS’ high speed magnetoinductive communication – termed FluxLink™, incorporated into the device package which creates a magnetic coupling between the primary and secondary side. FluxLink technology can provide very precise control of both of the primary and secondary switching functions, allowing synchronous rectification to be employed, delivering high efficiency without complex control circuitry (Figure 1). replacing the traditional Schottky diode with a mOSFET is the basis of synchronous rectification. mOSFETs have a very low onresistance, rDS (ON), so the voltage drop 18

across the transistor is much lower than for diodes, resulting in a significant increase in efficiency.

Figure 1

however, moving to synchronous rectification is not straightforward. Control circuitry is required to correctly phase the drive for

POWER MODUlES

So although synchronous rectification has advantages, it can be difficult to implement because the timing of the mOSFET’s switching is challenging. The ideal approach is to control the primary-side switch from the secondary-side of the power supply. This avoids the need to predict of the state of either mOSFET allowing greatly reduced deadtime whilst ensuring that the two mOSFETs are never simultaneously in the on-state. however, until recently, synchronous rectification required additional external optocoupler circuitry, limiting the utility of synchronous rectification in compact and/or high-reliability applications.

the mOSFET on the primary side with that of the synchronous mOSFET on the secondary side. This control circuit must ensure that current only flows through one of the transistors at any given time.

Figure 2 To prevent overlap in the switching of the primary (flyback) and synchronous rectification mOSFETs (which would result in highly destructive cross conduction), controllers typically introduce a delay between the turn-off of one transistor and the turnon of the other. This “dead-time” must be sufficient to account for the variable propagation delays associated with the circuitry necessary to drive transistors on opposite sides of the isolation barrier. Integration of key switching elements (controller, mOSFETs and drivers) reduces this uncertainty and allows the dead-time to be reduced with a corresponding increase in efficiency. www.international.electronica-azi.ro

The FluxLink technology (figure 2) within InnoSwitch ICs eliminates the need for this extra circuitry. Precise control ensures that the dead time is neither too conservative – which would adversely affect efficiency – nor too aggressive which would risk the damaging effects of shoot-through. As well as increasing efficiency, InnoSwitchEP Cv/CC flyback switching ICs enable excellent multi- output cross-regulation, and provide line protection and very fast transient response. Industrial applications increasingly require robust, reliable power supplies that provide long life and uninterrupted service reducing down time and service costs. multiple regulated outputs are often required to drive different functions that need power – clocks, motors, network interfaces, microprocessors, etc. Some functions require very tight voltage limits and to meet this engineers have previously used post-regulators that reduced efficiency and added cost to the solution. The forward voltage drop of a Schottky diode is current dependent (due to the epitaxial parasitic resistance in the Schottky structure) causing forward voltage drop to

increase with rising load current. A single loop controller can only directly regulate a single output and is therefore unable to compensate for this change across multiple rectification stages. The circuit shown in the right hand side of the diagram (figure 3) – based on Inno Switch-EP – uses a synchronous rectification mOSFET which has a relatively small change in voltage drop across load. This reduces cross regulation effects on the other outputs. Output voltage regulation at light and no-load is also improved by synchronous rectification. The mOSFET switch greatly reduces the peakcharging of the output capacitor that typically causes a significant increase in output voltage when output load is insufficient. These highly efficient power supply switchers are the ideal solution for engineers looking to address increasingly demanding Total Energy Cosumption (TEC) regulations with an easy-to-implement solution that improves power supply efficiency from standby to full load. For example, InnoSwitch-EP ICs enable a 20w power supply to achieve 90% efficiency in a multi- output design, while reducing no load consumption to less than 20mw. voltage regulation across line is highly accurate, better than ±3%, along with accurate controlled over-current protection also provided (Figure 4). robustness is improved by having an integrated 900v power mOSFET capable of withstanding the significant line voltage fluctuations found in motor control, grid monitoring, industrial metering and renewable energy applications. Designs can be made that support both lineneutral and phase-to-phase voltages. The 900v devices provide a high margin of safety in 450vAC systems and continue to operate during voltage swells and surges.

stage, modular hvDC/DC converters stepping down the bus voltage to the load. The same is now happening in the latest generation of datacenters, increasing energy utilization by the reduction of power losses by migrating from AC distribution to hvDC. high voltage DC distribution is also very common in industrial electrical vehicles such as are used in the mining and tunnel industries. These require fully encapsulated power modules able to operate within a wide temperature range, and down to 40°C. Such applications are what the PrBX PQB-PhB-PFB300S hvDC/DC converters series is designed for. In order to provide a solution for any application powered from a high-voltage bus, the PrBX PQB-PhBPFB300S series includes four power levels (150, 300, 600 and 750w) in three industry-standard packaging formats and footprints; quarter, half and full-brick. Designed for use in industrial environments, the PQB-PhB-PFB300S series can be operated within a wide temperature range of -40 to +100°C and in 95% of noncondensing relative humidity. The modules’ thermal shutdown is set to protect the units when the housing reaches 105°C.

All products in the PrBX PQB-PhBPFB300S series include under-voltage, over-voltage protection and lockout, continuous short circuit protection, current limiting and over-temperature protection. Both positive and negative remote ON/OFF types are available. The output voltage can be adjusted via the trim pin and all products feature voltage sensing and compensation pins. CONNECTORS

MILITARy COnnECTORS PROVIDE THE TEMPLATE FOR RUGGED APPLICATIOnS The rise of cyber-physical systems such as robots and autonomous vehicles is leading to a demand for rugged, resilient connectors that can cope with harsh environments. These systems need to be able to withstand not just moisture and dirt but aggressively corrosive contaminants as well. There are many connectors that are supported by data sheets claiming them to be reliable and suited for demanding applications. But do they perform outside of the narrow range of conditions specified in the documentation? more important to connector design is an understanding of the different construction techniques that have been proven in harsh environments. This is something that comes through decades of experience and work in highly demanding applications. That is why, when it comes to rugged connectors, it is worth looking at the long heritage of military connectors for non-military applications. The major advantage of opting for military standard connectors is that the designs have been refined and battle-tested over time, so have the requirements. The evolution of military standards and the connectors that follow them, closely match the demanding requirements of ruggedised systems and provide a number of options to support different needs. If a connector application does not need the full complement of ruggedisation, other options are available and may come with a lower cost. The key is to match the requirements of the application to the connector type. This does not need to be as challenging as it first appears as there are specialists who can help, with specific technical skills and many years of experience in this demanding industry. Developed more than 70 years ago, the core design of the AS50515 connector has 24

Electronica Azi International

clearly stood the test of time. The structure satisfied the requirements of a connector that offers easy engagement and disengagement, the ability to house a wide variety of contact types and excellent mechanical and electrical performance under harsh conditions. In contrast to the connectors used on office computers and similar products, military designers opted for a circular architecture that has become a staple of rugged connectors ever since. The shape is important. whether the interface is Ethernet, uSB, parallel bus or a custom mix of signal pins, the same circular shape is a consistent feature of military-grade rugged connections because of its high performance. The circular shape provides the basis for higher mechanical strength, particularly if the connector is subject to shocks or high forces perpendicular to the signal flow. There are no sharp angles or corners often found in commercial-grade connectors that focus such stress into small portions of the connector body. The AS50515 standard has limitations. These issues led to the development of a number of variants that optimise contact size for high-density interconnection, as well

as providing support for features such as multi-key polarisation. Even so, the connector still has applications in sectors such as powertrain interconnection in mass transportation, and industrial robotics where high power-handling capability is essential. The mIL-DTL-28840 standard took the circular connector concept into shipboard systems, using corrosion-resistant materials and seals to protect against sea water and other hazards. The mIL-DTL-38999 standard provided a high-density connector for increas-

ingly complex electronic systems, following the trend towards subminiature connectors in the commercial IT space. The longevity of the core connector design has resulted in a design that maximises usability and robustness in real-world use. Damage caused by misaligned connectors needs to be minimised. A system cannot be

MIlITARY CONNECTORS

rendered unusable in active service conditions. Connections may have to be made by soldiers under fire – the connector design needs to be implemented in such as way that mis-mating and the resulting damage does not occur. In a connector based on the core AS50515 design, the metal connector shell has a number of keyways that correspond with those in the connector to which it has to mate. The configuration of these keyways depends on what is best for the application. military connectors employ keyways, not only to ensure the two halves are aligned correctly as they are brought together, but also to prevent damage to fragile pins in high-density designs. usually there is a master keyway providing primary location between shells. On this is superimposed a set of minor keyways to allow the orientation of the respective inserts to be altered

against mismating. Although the use of keyways prevents most of the potential for damage when mating connectors, there is still the danger of socket hardware injuring the pins of a high density plug with which it is to be mated. This occurs at the moment of insertion or withdrawal. The pin insert is surrounded by a cylindrical metal shield which projects well beyond the delicate pin inserts. On bringing the two halves of the connector together, this shield engages and aligns them before the pins are mated. This scoop-free design prevents damage by attempts to engage the connectors when the halves are not in line. Once the connectors are mated, they a locked together by a coupling. A common choice is between threaded, bayonet and breech-look designs. In all cases, the aim is to add extra compression to the joint before positive locking occurs, to ensure excellent contact between the two halves of the connector. The mIL-DTL-38999 connector and similar designs have evolved to employ a triple-start threading mechanism for the dual benefits of high protection against vibration, and faster mating and unmating without a loss in connection integrity. The choices of material and design for connector contacts have proven instrumental in the long-term stability of the military connector standards, making them highly suitable for any application that requires ruggedness. Connectors are precision mechanical devices whose interfaces are critical and subject to mechanical wear, more so than most other electrical components. If not catered for, the effects of oxidation and sulphide formation will reduce the connector’s capability. Connectors may be required to have con-

electrical conductivity, and can - in inferior designs - result in open, intermittent contact or excessive resistance. In some installations, mechanical strain can also adversely affect the integrity of the securing apparatus. Among the materials found in lower-cost connectors are metal alloys suitable for casting, such as zinc-based metals. The contact choices for military circular connectors focus on metals and alloys with higher endurance. Beryllium copper is a common focus for the leading manufacturers of circular connectors. Copper has the key advantage of being an excellent conductor but is a relatively soft metal. Alloying copper with beryllium, however, dramatically changes the physical performance. The alloy of beryllium with copper has the further benefit of being comparatively lightweight. Small changes in the beryllium content, typically between 0.15 and 2 by weight percentage, produces alloys with widely differing physical properties. All retain an elastic modulus of around 20 million psi, around 10 to 20 per cent higher than other copy alloys. Long-term experience with the real-world performance of connectors in demanding military applications has provided the leading manufacturers with solid experience in which alloys provide the greatest overall benefit. Gold-plated contacts provide excellent conductivity for solder or crimp termination. For the shell around the connector body, there are a number of material choices. One is aluminium that is plated or anodised for corrosion protection. A variety of plating materials can be used. Traditionally, cadmium proved to be a high-quality choice for corrosion resistance but the introduction of environmental restrictions,

relative to the master key. This is achieved by slightly altering the angle of the inserts in the shells. For instance, the pin insert may be placed some degrees clockwise relative to the master, while sockets are moved anticlockwise in the same manner. Thus, different pin arrangements are catered for without compromising the protection

tacts made and broken repeatedly and in conditions that encourage corrosion as well as mechanical wear. Industrial applications, as well as military, often subject the connector assembly to vibration or repeated physical force, which contributes to fatigue or abrasion of the contact materials. These life stresses cause degradation of

such as the rohS and rEACh directives mean less toxic materials need to be used in most applications. Experience has shown that zinc alloyed with nickel provides high salt-spray resistance comparable to that of cadmium plating. This performance is achieved without compromising electrical continuity.

higher continuity, though with less resistance to salt spray is available using nickel over aluminium. Stainless steel provides another option for the shell construction. As well as excellent corrosion resistance it is generally one of the best choices for situations that call for the ability to operate in sterile conditions – suiting the material to food and medical applications. Plating for stainless steel is generally with nickel or a passivation layer. The internal contacts will generally need to be protected from moisture ingress, possibly to the level of a hermetic seal. Examination of the internal structure of the typical circular connectors reveals how well-suited to this the design is. There are often a number of layers of insulating material packing the space between the connector body and the contacts. Looking into the front of the male connector, a user will see the interfacial seal. But behind that will be an insulator layer, a retention disc and finally a grommet that extends to the rear of the connector body. The female connector provides a deep insulating layer on top of another retention disc and the grommet. As well as participating in the sealing ability of the connector, the retention discs help assure a firm

contact between the electrically important mating parts. The insulating materials are carefully chosen. Dielectric materials in low-cost commercial connectors may include polyethylene and polystyrene, possibly glass-filled for high voltage breakdown performance. Circular connector manufacturers will often specify FEP fluorocarbon or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). For connectors with a sealed interface, the gasket material is typically silicone rubber. A careful choice of insulating materials as well as contacts assures high performance in electrically demanding applications, such as high-frequency signal interfaces. These connectors will provide consistent electrical performance and mechanical reliability. Also, basing connector choice around a known and well-supported standard such as mIL 38999, assures uniform performance among products from different vendors. For example, such a standard will demand gold plating levels to a specified minimum level to guarantee conductivity. A further advantage of the materials specified for military use lies in the typical operational temperature range of the connectors. They can be used across a wide range of temperatures, often down to as low as -65°C

and up to +200°C depending on the model. For operation in hazardous, fire-prone environments, another option is for fibreoptic connections. Because of the high signal integrity achievable using photonic transmissions, there are many options for fibre-optic connectors in military product ranges – as well as pertinent standards, such as mIL-PrF-29504 termination. Designed to fit mIL-DTL-28840, mIL-DTL38999 and similar connectors, the mILPrF-29504 standard determines performance criteria for fibre-optic termination to ensure clean mating. Because of the need to preserve optical continuity under shock and vibration, fibre-optic standards are more stringent in this respect and ensure that reliable performance is maintained in compliant products. A combination of experience and clear standardisation that maximises interoperability and resilience makes the military circular a smart choice for a wide range of industrial applications that need to go into harsh environment applications with stringent performance requirements. mary Tamar Tan from microchip Technology explains how a real-time clock and calendar module can reduce component count and cut programming costs in smart meters and other applications. mary Tamar Tan is Applications Engineer at microchip Technology.

reducing both the component count and user programming costs are goals in almost any design. however, help from both of these can come from using a real-time clock and calendar (rTCC) module that provides accurate time and date keeping and is optimised for low power usage with little or no intervention from the CPu. These can provide benefits in applications such as digital alarm clocks and smart energy meters, something becoming increasingly important as more and more countries role out smart grids. Available with microchip PIC microcontrollers, the module is a 100-year clock and calendar with automatic leap-year

hour format with visibility down to 0.5s. The alarm is configurable for 0.5, 1 and 10s, 1, 10 and 60min, or day, week and month. Fig. 1 shows the block diagram of the module. It uses a separate clock source coming from an external crystal oscillating at 32.768khz from the secondary oscillator (SOSC) of the T1OSC for some devices. This lets the module continue running even when the CPu clock is disabled during deep sleep mode. The 1:16384 clock prescaler provides the 0.5s visibility to the user, which in turn allows the rTCC timer to increment the appropriate second, minute, hour, day, month and year values stored in the rTCvALx registers. These values are compared with the userset alarm values to trigger an alarm interrupt whenever a match occurs. The alarm values are stored in the ALrmvALx registers. Alarm masks are used to set the time interval between each alarm event if multiple periodic alarms are needed.

POWER APPlICATIONS

Once the rTCC is enabled, the timer proceeds with the count from the configured starting point. Also, to avoid accidental writes to the rTCC timer register, it is advised that the rTwrEN bit be cleared when not writing to the register. The alarm feature is configurable from half

An on-chip power switch detects the power loss from the vDD and connects the vBAT pin to the retention regulator. This provides power at 1.2v to maintain the retention regulator, as well as the rTCC, with its clock source if enabled and the deep sleep general purpose registers

The rTCC pin can output either the seconds clock or an alarm pulse at half the frequency of the alarm depending on the configured settings. To simplify the firmware, the register interface for the rTCC and alarm values are implemented using binary coded decimal (BCD) format. PERIPHERAl CONfIGURATION The user configures the time by writing the required year, month, day, hour, minutes and seconds to the timer registers. however, the rTCC enable bit (rTCEN) and the rTCvALh and rETCvALL registers can only be written to when the rTCC value registers write enable bit (rTCwrEN) is set to one, otherwise any write to these registers will be ignored. The rTCC timer (rTCvALx) and alarm timer (ALrmvALx) registers can only be accessed through corresponding register pointers. Every write or read to the rTCvALh register decrements the rTCC pointer value by one until it reaches 00. when the rTCC output pin is enabled, the user can choose either to output the seconds clock or an alarm pulse, operating at half the frequency of the alarm. For more accurate timing and to ensure uninterrupted operation of the rTCC even in deep sleep, the SOSC is recommended as the peripheral’s clock source. www.international.electronica-azi.ro

Figure 3: Digital alarm clock implementing the RTCC module. BATTERY BACK-UP MODE A feature of the rTCC module is its ability to continue operating from a back-up battery if there is a power loss that would otherwise affect its timing accuracy. This is vBAT mode, and the PIC microcontrollers have both mCu power reduction and uninterrupted operation of the rTCC through the vBAT hardware-based power mode. This mode uses a back-up power source connected to the vBAT pin as shown in Fig. 2.

this mode is identified by checking the state of the vBAT bit. If this is set when the device is awake and starting to execute the code from the reset vector, it indicates that the exit was from vBAT mode. To identify future vBAT wake-up events, the bit must be cleared in software. One of the microchip demonstration boards that supports the vBAT operation is the LCD Explorer Demonstration Board. It is provided with a battery holder for a Cr2032 3v button cell. 29

DIGITAl AlARM ClOCKS Fig. 3 shows a sample implementation of the rTCC with the LCD driver and the capture-compare-PwN (CCP) modules for a digital alarm clock application. The SOSC provides the clock for the rTCC module. If the rTCC pin is configured to output the seconds clock, this allows LED D1 to blink once every second. The values in the rTCvALx registers are manipulated by firmware to be displayed on LCD1 through the LCD driver module. The alarm interrupt triggers the CCP module to generate a pulse-width modulated output that activates the P1 piezo buzzer on every alarm event. The duration of the alarm is controlled through firmware. The S1, S2 and S3 pushbutton switches are used to set the initial rTCC time and date as well as the alarm settings. One of the buttons can also be used to trigger the start of the rTCC count. There are several microchip demonstration boards that can be used for this application. Several PIC microcontrollers with

ENERGY METERS In an energy-metering device, the rTCC module can be integrated with other peripherals such as the analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) and LCD driver modules. mCus for metering applications should have a highresolution ADC for voltage and current measurements, must consume low power, be able to operate from a battery to maintain uninterrupted operation of the rTCC, and have an EEPrOm for data logging and storage of calibration data. microchip has a number of 8bit PIC microcontrollers that meet these requirements. The periodic autoadjust feature in the rTCC module can be used with the ADC module to perform software temperature compensation for a more accurate time. These microcontrollers also

CONClUSION The rTCC modules of PIC microcontrollers provide the necessary features to maintain accurate time and date keeping. They are easy to configure, provide automatic error calibration and have very low power consumption. Since the rTCC is usually not implemented by itself, its usefulness is better appreciated when integrated with other peripherals. PIC microcontrollers provide versatile choices of peripherals that can be implemented with the rTCC module for digital alarm clocks, energy meters and other applications. BrAINChIP INTrODuCES wOrLD’S FIrST COmmErCIAL hArDwArE ACCELErATION OF NEurOmOrPhIC COmPuTING BrainChip holdings Ltd., a leading developer of software and hardware accelerated solutions for advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning, announced the release of its hardware acceleration board, BrainChip Accelerator. BrainChip Accelerator is an 8-lane, PCI-Express add-in card that increases the speed and accuracy of the object recognition function of BrainChip Studio software by up to six times, while increasing the simultaneous video channels of a system to 16 per card. The card is very low-power and can be easily installed within existing video surveillance systems without upgrading power systems or thermal management. BrainChip Studio helps law enforcement and intelligence organizations rapidly identify objects in large amounts of archived or live streaming video. By processing multiple video streams simultaneously, the BrainChip Accelerator add-in card enables these organizations to search increasing amounts of video faster, with a higher probability of object recognition and lower total cost of ownership. The system learns from a single low-resolution image, which can be as small as 20 × 20 pixels, and excels in recognition in low-light, low-resolution, noisy environments. As the first commercial implementation of a hardware-accelerated spiking neural network system, BrainChip Accelerator is a significant milestone in the development of neuromorphic computing, a

branch of artificial intelligence that simulates neuron functions. The processing is done by six BrainChip Accelerator cores in a Xilinx kintex ultrascale field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Each core performs fast, user-defined image scaling, spike generation, and spiking neural network comparison to recognize objects. Scaling images up and down increases the probability of finding objects, and due to the low-power characteristics of spiking neural networks, each core consumes approximately one watt while processing up to 100 frames per second. In comparison to GPu-accelerated deep learning classification neural networks like GoogleNet and AlexNet, this is a 7x improvement of frames/second/watt. NEWS SILICON LABS’ mAGNETIC SENSOrS mODErNIZE hALL-EFFECT SwITCh AND POSITION SENSING FOr ThE IOT ErA Si72xx Hall-Effect Sensors Enhance Power Efficiency, Sensitivity, Ease of Use and Tamper Protection for Industrial, Consumer and Automotive Designs Silicon Labs brings hall-effect sensing into the 21st century with a magnetic sensor portfolio offering industry-leading power efficiency, best-in-class sensitivity, flexible I2C configuration, and built-in tamper detection and temperature sensing. Silicon Labs’ new Si72xx portfolio includes the most advanced, feature-rich magnetic sensors available today, outclassing reed switches and traditional hall-effect devices in a wide range of open/close and position-sensing applications. The Si72xx magnetic sensors provide solid-state reliability for white goods, flow meters, cordless power tools, wheel and dial-type controls for consumer electronics, industrial alarms, motor controls and door/window security applications. The sensors are AEC-Q100-qualified for automotive applications and designed to withstand harsh industrial environments. Silicon Labs’ Si72xx sensors solve several tradeoffs in selecting the right magnetic sensing solution for power- and cost-sensitive applications. reed switches consume very little power but are bulky and unreliable. while hall-effect sensors offer solidstate reliability, they are more power hungry. Traditional hall-effect designs are also stuck in the past, providing only a few of the programmable capabilities and advanced features offered by other modern sensor

types used in IoT applications. Si72xx sensors address these needs by matching the power efficiency of reed switches with the reliability of hall-effect sensors, while adding more advanced features, higher sensitivity and exceptional configurability. Ultra-low Power: Developers can finally add reliable hall-effect-based sensors to battery-powered systems without impacting the system’s battery life. Operating below 100nA (sleep current) and less than 400nA for a 5hz sampling rate, Si72xx sensors can help designs achieve multiyear and decade-long battery lifetimes, even when powered by very small batteries. High Sensitivity: The outstanding sensitivity of Si72xx sensors (<1.1mT Bop, <30uT rmS noise, <0.1% linearity and 20mT/200 mT ranges) enables developers to reduce the size of magnetics in their designs by 50 to 80 percent or extend sensing range by 2x or more. Configurability: Si72xx sensors can easily be configured, measured and controlled over an I2C interface, providing greater flexibility during design and in the end product. using an I2C interface dramatically reduces current for position-sensing applications by enabling the sensor to be queried as needed instead of continuously. Advanced features: Si72xx sensors

include many useful built-in capabilities such as a tamper threshold feature that enables systems to detect attempts to bypass security. most reed switch and halleffect sensor-based security systems can be defeated by a strong external magnetic field. The Si72xx sensors’ tamper detection technology detects anomalous magnetic fields, and a built-in self-test mode can be used to verify the sensor’s continued accurate operation in the field. Si72xx sensors also include a ±1°C accurate temperature sensor, eliminating the need for discrete temperature sensing, reducing system size and cost, and enhancing functionality. The Si72xx sensor portfolio includes three families: • The Si720x family supports digital output switch and latch capabilities in a variety of sampling rates and sensitivities. • The Si721x family includes linear output devices for position-sensing applications that produce signals directly proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. • The Si7210 family of I2C-configurable sensors supports all of the features and capabilities of the other two families while providing unmatched design flexibility and programmability. NEWS rOBuST ISL32741E AND ISL32740E DELIvEr INDuSTry’S hIGhEST wOrkING vOLTAGE AND uLTrA-LOw EmI FOr INDuSTrIAL IOT NETwOrkS Intersil, a subsidiary of renesas Electronics Corporation, announced two new high-speed, isolated rS-485 differential bus transceivers that provide 40mbps bidirectional data communication for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks. The ISL32741E offers 1,000vrmS working voltage and 6kv of reinforced isolation, more than 2x higher than competitive solutions. The higher working voltage and reinforced isolation is required for today’s most rigorous medical and high-speed motor control applications. The ISL32740E with 2.5kv of isolation and 600vrmS working voltage comes in the industry’s smallest package, enabling high channel density for programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in factory automation applications. The ISL3274xE transceivers provide additional advantages over other isolation technologies, including ultra-low radiated emission and EmI susceptibility, support for up to 160 devices on the bus, and an extended 125°C temperature range. These devices leverage giant magnetoresistance (Gmr) technology that provides galvanic isolation to keep the communication bus free from common-mode noise generated in electrically noisy factory and building automation environments. In addition, Intersil’s Gmr isolation does not require the elaborate encoding schemes found in capacitive and transformer-based isolators that use rF carriers or pulsewidth modulation (Pwm) to transfer DC and low frequency signals across the barrier. The ISL3274xE transceivers are ideally suited for the equipmentto-bus interface in PrOFIBuS DP and high-speed rS-485 networks that connect PLCs to instruments, robots, motor control drives, as well as data acquisition and digital I/O modules.

In addition to not requiring any shielding, these transceivers simplify PCB layout, use less board space, and enhance data transmission reliability and integrity. The ISL3274xE devices also offer low power consumption. For example, the ISL32740EIAZ’s 60mA supply current allows it to operate in a tiny 4mm × 5mm QSOP package at maximum speed without overheating. The ISL3274xE transceivers are fully compliant with the EN 50081 and EN 50082-2 electromagnetic compatibility (EmC) standards and the umbrella line-voltage standard for information technology equipment (ITE) EN 61000. TE COnnECTIVITy MEAnS POWER Every electrical and electronic system needs power, but “power” means different things to different engineers. For the PCB designer, power might mean a 5 volt power supply delivering a few hundred milliamps. But for the industrial motor designer, power might mean hundreds of amps and hundreds of volts. The engineer needs a wide selection of components that can handle the power, whatever the application. Fortunately, our friends of TE Connectivity have an extensive range of components, from connectors and resistors to filters and heatshrink, that really deliver! POWER TRIPlE lOCK (PTl) CONNECTORS - PROVIDING 3-IN-1 RElIABIlITY TE Connectivity have been designing connectors for board-to-wire applications for decades. From the very popular mATE-N-LOk family to the Economy Power series, the choice for the PCB designer is huge. however, one of the rising stars of the range is the Power Triple Lock. we have looked at the PTL before, and with good reason. This relatively new product is actually a versatile connector system that is designed to take everyday applications in its stride. The PTL delivers excellent current capability of up to 20A per circuit combined with a contact pitch of only 6mm. It features three locking systems to ensure reliable operation in everyday use, and a number of polarisation options to prevent incorrect mating. The Power Triple Lock range is available from rS Components.

HEATSHRINK PRODUCTS - PROTECTION fOR THE TOUGHEST APPlICATIONS TE Connectivity don't just make connectors. Included in the TE range is the raychem range of heatshrink tubing and moulded parts. heatshrink is made using cross-linked polymers (thermoplastics). The material is moulded and then expanded whilst hot. The cross-linking process means that, once heated again (as with a heatshrink gun) the plastic will “remember its original shape and shink. Take a look at our video to see raychem heashrink products in action. heatshrink products can be made of a range of thermoplastic materials, all with different characteristics. Some are particularly good at resisting abrasion, whilst others are good for protecting against chemicals. For our purposes, some offer really good electrical insulation, making them ideal for the power engineer. TE heatshrink products are avaiable from rS Components in a huge range of colours, sizes and materials.

POWER RElAYS - fROM TRUSTED BRAND NAMES The TE Connectivity family includes a wide range of relays and contactors from some of the most trusted brand names in the industry, including Potter & Brumfield, AmP and kilovac. The range includes PCB-mounted power relays and some of the largest contactors, including the massive kilovac range with contact current ratings of up to 500A. rS Components offers a range of power relays and contactors.
