Microsemi Broadens FPGA Product Portfolio with Highly-integrated IGLOO2 IGLOO2 FPGAs Offer Lowest System Cost, Best-in-class Integration, Low Power, Reliability and Security Microsemi Corporation unveiled its IGLOO®2 field programmable gate array (FPGA) family for industrial, commercial aviation, defense, communications and security applications. The non-volatile flash-based IGLOO2 FPGAs have the highest number of mainstream FPGA features including general purpose input/outputs (GPIOs), 5G SERDES interfaces, and PCI Express® endpoints of any similar device on the market today, and feature the industry’s only high-performance memory subsystem. When compared to other 5G SERDES-based FPGAs under 150K logic elements (LEs), IGLOO2’s high level of integration provides the lowest total system cost versus competitive FPGAs while improving reliability, significantly reducing power and systematically protecting valuable customers’ design IPs. The IGLOO2 FPGA family requires only two power supplies, versus three for competitive devices. Additionally, the non-volatile configuration of IGLOO2 eliminates the requirement for external flash memory, providing the system architect with a higher level of system integration, performance and reliability. Microsemi has already engaged with lead customers who plan to use IGLOO2 in a broad range of products including industrial controllers, Ethernet switches, FADEC engine controllers, missile systems, and other applications. Microsemi’s IGLOO2 FPGAs address industry needs for mainstream FPGA features by providing a LUT-based fabric, 5G transceivers, high-speed GPIO, block RAM and DSP blocks in a differentiated, cost- and power-optimized architecture. The new IGLOO2 FPGA architecture offers up to five times more logic density and three times more fabric performance than the previous generation IGLOO family. The IGLOO2 family offers best-in-class mainstream FPGA features including: • highest number of GPIOs for any given density node for 5G SERDES FPGAs; • highest number of 5G transceivers density; • highest number of PCI compliant 3.3V I/Os in the industry; and • highest number of PCIe endpoints.
For cost-optimized FPGAs below 150K LEs, IGLOO2 provides the high level of I/O and SERDES integration - which is necessary for I/O expansion, bridging, system management and co-processing - allowing customers to use smaller devices for I/O expansion and bridging solutions. This, coupled with the need for only two power supplies and no external configuration devices, reduces overall system cost and board complexity. For the vast number of applications in the communications, industrial, defense and aviation markets that require highly integrated premium features for I/O expansion, bridging and co-processing at a lower cost, IGLOO2 provides a best-in-class solution.
IGLOO2’s FPGA features are complemented by a unique built-in high-performance memory subsystem (HPMS) that embeds common user functions such as the industry’s largest monolithic embedded SRAM memory blocks. These memories provide fast, predictable low latency to time critical embedded applications such as video, embedded graphics functions and real time Ethernet. Included in the HPMS is up to 512Kbytes of flash memory which allows users to store pertinent system data such as Ethernet MAC IDs, user keys, system configuration and system personalization data. This feature also enables secure boot functions for industry leading processors by storing secondary boot loaders securely on-chip. In addition, the HPMS integrates two DMA controllers and a two-port memory cache (DDR bridges) to efficiently move data within and in-and-out of IGLOO2 to external DDR3 memories for these embedded time critical applications.
Low Power The IGLOO2 FPGA family delivers the industry’s lowest static power by providing 10 times lower static power than comparable FPGAs by utilizing a unique Flash*Freeze real-time power management mode. All trigger events can be time stamped. Timestamp clock can either be based on the internal clock circuit or an externally fed-in time reference signal. The four (or two) input channels are completely separated and have one monolithic ADC per channel, as well as its own high precision pre-amplifier. Each amplifier can be configured separately by software. Software can select one of six input ranges (±200 mV up to ±10 V), 50 Ohm or 1 MOhm input impedance and AC or DC coupling. Furthermore a bandwidth filter can be activated which suppresses
high frequency noise signals. The UF4e cards have an extremely powerful trigger engine that can combine the two external trigger inputs with channel trigger of each channel by a logical OR or AND. The channel trigger detection can be programmed for edge, level, window or pulse width. Synchronization with Star-Hub Up to eight UF4e cards can run synchronously in one system. The star-hub module option distributes clock and trigger signals between the cards. The star-hub module can combine all of the trigger sources of all connected cards making it possible to use any trigger source as a starting event for the complete system. Using the star-hub a total of 32 channels with 500 MS/s and 14 bit resolution can be acquired simultaneously. The UF4e-4451-x8 is the first product of a new series of ultra fast digitizers. The UF4e platform increases the bus transfer speed by factor 16 compared with former UF2e and MF3e platforms with PCI Express x1 Gen1 interface. Together with the clock concept and the powerful FPGA this platform is designed to be the base for new, ultra fast, high resolution products of the next generation. Based on the internal modular concept, new products with different ADCs and different sampling
INDUSTRY NEWS rates can be released to the market faster than before. During 2013, it is planned to release further models with 16 bit ADC resolution and 130 MS/s and 250 MS/s. The UF4e platform is not limited to A/D modules but will also be used as a basis for fast digital data acquisition and arbitrary waveform and pattern generators.
SBench 6 Instrumentation Software All features of the new card series are fully supported by the UltraFast SBench 6 software. SBench 6 has been optimized to handle several GByte large signals and is running natively under Windows and Linux, both 32 bit and 64 bit. With this, SBench is the first out-of-the-box measurement software with full Linux support.
SBench 6 has been designed for the UltraFast PC instruments and supports all usage modes and settings of the UF4e series with comfortable setup dialogues. The software is able to run the cards in oscilloscope mode as well as long time transient recording mode (streaming mode). A special feature of SBench 6 is the segmented view that allows display of segment based signals together with signals of a second timebase (ABA mode) as well as highly precise timestamps. Besides this SBench 6 has many build-in features for comfortable data analysis and documentation like FFT analysis, a
EMBEDDED SYSTEMS function interpreter, several integrated analysis functions, export into ASCII, Wave, MATLAB, comment functions for signals and display details as well as a comfortable printout function. The UF4e series - like the slower platforms UF2e and UF3e - is based on the proven SPCM driver interface. This interface incor-
porates a common API for all current products from Strategfic Test. For example, a program designed for the UF3e-4140 card (1 channel 14 bit 400 MS/s digitizer) only needs a couple of code lines changed to run with the new UF4-4451-x8. Customers who want to program by themselves can use the proven SPCM driver for Windows and Linux, which are included in
the delivery. A set of standard programming examples is provided to illustrate the boards main signal capture functions. Extensive support includes Visual C++, Borland C++, Gnu C++, Visual Basic, VB.NET, C#, J# and Delphi code. A 2-year manufacturer warranty is standard for all UltraFast hardware products. Drivers, software and firmware updates are available free of charge as well as the support given directly by the developer engineers themselves.

MEDICAL DEVICES
Wearable Medical Devices: Design at the Cutting Edge Medical devices are evolving from portable equipment to wearable devices. These are meant to be used continuously for extended periods of time as health care moves out of hospitals and becomes more integrated with peoples’ lives. Wearable medical devices are not a new concept; devices such as nicotine patches and patches for motion sickness are familiar and laid the groundwork for a new generation of electronic products, including the iontophoresis patch.
by Marten L. Smith, Staff Engineer, Medical Products Group, Microchip Technology Inc. An electrical current facilitates iontophoresis, which enables the infusion of a drug through the skin. The transdermal drug is ionised, dissolved in an aqueous solution and applied to an electrode in the patch.
Figure 1: Typical Iontophoresis Operation. 12
EP&Dee | July, 2013 | www.epd-ee.eu
Figure 1 shows how this specially formulated, ionised compound can then be moved through the skin via DC current. Depending on the drug and the condition being treated, modern patches can be worn for anything
from a few minutes to a few hours. Iontophoresis has several advantages. The medicine can be locally dosed at very high levels; rather than being distributed throughout the entire body, as occurs with syringe injections. Local administration can result in improved efficacy and reduced side effects. The production of low-cost, single use dispensers for these drugs has been made possible by recent advances in electronics technology, such as switched mode power-supply design - along with cost-effective, high performance MCUs. Self-applied iontophoresis is already in common use by consumers for a range of conditions, including headaches and cold sores. The fact that the critical electronics are in the wearable portion of devices such as iontophoresis patches poses a significant challenge to designers. This is because this is the part which is meant to be used once and then thrown away, which means patch electronics must be small and inexpensive. As a small, disposable item, battery cost and energy capacity impose further design constraints. Finally, the design needs to be easily modified for additional features, such as changes in the medication dose and duration. The device must produce sufficient voltages to drive the current level needed to infuse the correct dose through the skin and for the required duration period. A DC/DC boost converter can drive a controlled current through the skin, along with a
DESIGN microcontroller (MCU) to control the converter for the development of a small cost-sensitive iontophoresis device. To reach the required current to penetrate the skin, a boost regulator can step up the voltage from a low-voltage battery such as inexpensive Lithium coin or alkaline cell batteries to provide power to the patch electronics. The MCU must be both small and highly integrated to meet the requirements for cost and functionality. Microchip’s 8-pin, 8-bit PIC12F1822 MCU is used in these devices and meets the design integration requirement, with an internal 10bit ADC, fixed voltage reference, comparator, PWM, hardware timers and EEPROM. The fixed voltage reference eliminates the need for a regulator or an external reference, and keeps the design to an 8-pin MCU in order to lower the cost and reduce board size. In order to improve the quality of life and the quality of health care for patients, innovation in electronics technology now supports the development of medical devices that are intended to be worn on the body for long periods of time. Devices of this nature currently in use include continuous glucose monitors and wearable cardiac-event recorders. An ovulation prediction system – used to maximise the opportunity for conception – is an interesting example of a device which longterm use. For example, the DuoFertility-brand fertility monitor, made by Cambridge
MEDICAL DEVICES Temperature Concepts (Figure 2) embodies a number of attributes that are essential to longterm monitoring systems. The ovulation process correlates to minute changes in her basal body temperature; accurately measuring those changes over multiple cycles can help to estimate the day of ovulation. Therefore the sensor on this fertility device continuously measures body basal temperature for up to six months, in contrast to a continuous glucose monitor may be designed to operate for up to a week. The device can predict when ovulation will occur up to six days in advance by using the data from constantly monitoring minute temperature changes. This approach eliminates the variations found from taking temperatures manually. One design challenge is to create a device which can be comfortably attached to the body for months at a time. A two-part system comprised the solution in this instance; the coin-sized sensor unit attaches to the user's body with a biocompatible adhesive patch while the handheld reader unit analyses the data and allows the user to transfer that data to medical professionals for further analysis. This ensures the body-worn sensor is as small and light as possible, as demonstrated in the functional partitioning diagram in Figure 3. The environment of the user and their expected activities over a period of months also presents a challenge. A wearable device used for
months at a time must accommodate a range of conditions including sleeping, exercising, showering or even skiing. Therefore, the design of the sensor and its packaging must deliver precise temperature measurements regardless of whether the sensor is open on one side or covered by the user's arm. A pair of matched thermistors measure temperature and heat flow from one side of the sensor to the other, making the sensor accurate to a few thousandths of a degree. Incorporating an accelerometer in the sensor design also ensures the user’s movement is taken into account. The volume available for batteries is very limited for small body-worn electronics. Therefore the power consumption must be extremely low. The designers of this sensor used an 8-bit PIC16F886 MCU; minimal current consumption was achieved by using the MCU’s ultra low power wake-up feature. In less than 1mS, the sensor can power up, take a measurement and then return to sleep mode when it's time to take a reading. This short wake-up time enabled the device’s designers to achieve average power consumption of less than 1μA, and a battery life of six months, using a small CR1216 Lithium coin-cell battery. The sensor module sends data to the reader using a modified RFID protocol, wherein communication is initiated by holding the reader near the sensor.
Figure 2: Fertility Monitor Reader and Sensor. www.epd-ee.eu | July, 2013 | EP&Dee
13
DESIGN This data transfer poses a challenge as it requires higher power consumption than measurement but holding the sensor’s temperature readings in 16 megabytes of standalone Flash minimised the current draw and allows reader data uploads to be spaced a few days apart.
MEDICAL DEVICES The data collected by a long-term sensor may need to be analysed by a trained person, having transferred the measured data to a PC or via the Internet. The handheld reader transfers the data to a PC via the on-chip USB peripheral inside Microchip’s 16-bit PIC24FJ256GB106 MCU
with nanoWatt Technology. Front-panel buttons implemented using the MCU’s internal Charge Time Measurement Unit (CTMU) and mTouch™ Capacitive Touch technology allow the user to enter additional data. Communication from the device manufacturer to the reader allows for refinement of the ovulation prediction; the same capability can allow remote reconfiguration of the MCU. The manufacturer can run diagnostics and send software updates to the monitoring system using this flexibility.
Wearable medical devices that are meant for long-term use will create new diagnostic and therapeutic options for even more illnesses and conditions as innovation continues in the fields of biology, physiology, chemistry and electronics. Transistors and power modules by International Rectifier The International Rectifier (IR) Company is a world leader in the semiconductor market for use in energy conversion systems - from digital, analogue and mixed integrated circuits to advanced discrete components. IR components are using by the most known manufacturers of computers, household appliances, automobiles, consumer electronics and military equipment, while continuously improving quality, features and efficiency of their products. One of the main products are power transistors, which, despite their long history, are still basic and dynamically developing components of the contemporary electronics. MOSFET transistors MOSFET power transistors are the flagship products of International Rectifier. Developing their technology for over 30 years, the company has become one of the undisputed leaders in the field, achieving a number of patents, both in the construction of semiconductor transistors, as well as in their innovative enclosures that ensure efficient heat transfer and minimize parasitic capacitance and inductance. The company's HEXFET transistors family is characterized by a relatively small size and low resistance in the ON state and low gate charge, which helps minimize power losses in the state of conduction and switching, and their high operating frequency that allows achieving a record-breaking density and efficiency of the devices in which they are used. HEXFET transistors, as universal elements, are widely used in all kinds of energy conversion systems, including DC/DC convert-

ers, UPS systems, as well as audio amplifiers, control and power systems of electric motors and other power converters and switches. Thus they can be found in all kinds of professional and consumer electronics applications, in
industrial, computer and telecommunication equipment, radio, television and household appliances, as well as in the automotive and military equipment. International Rectifier offers all types of MOSFET power transis-

tors: both N-channel transistors that are the main part of product portfolio, as well as P-channel MOSFETs. The company offers both discrete transistors, as well as components with an integrated Schottky diode and transistor pairs integrated in one enclosure: 2 × N, 2 × P and P/N. In total, the range includes several hundred types, with continuous drain currents from fractional ampere up to 200 – 400A and maximum drain-source voltages up to several hundred volts. Most often, however, these parameters are within a few to several dozen amps and about 20 - 200V. Depending on the size and technology of the transistor, the drain resistance ranges from one to hundreds of mΩ (typically up to several dozen of mΩ) and the switching frequency is above 1MHz. A very important issue for power transistors is the technology of their enclosures, because very often the capabilities of an enclosure are the primary factor limiting the

IRLS3034PBF (40V, 195A) in D2Pak surface-mounted enclosures. Where capabilities of a standard enclosure are insufficient, innovations are required. Also here IR is among the leaders. The first direction of the company development is based on the modification of the existing enclosures, especially in order to reduce pin resistance and to improve heat dissipation efficiency. One method is to increase the number of pins, and the examples are here 7-pin D2-Pak-7 enclosures. With such procedure, a significantly higher drain current is achieved, without increasing the
size of the enclosure too much. For example, the IRLS3034-7PPBF transistor in a D2-Pak-7 enclosure has a 240A maximum drain current (limited by enclosure capabilities), so 45A more than an equivalent model in a standard three-pin enclosure. Another method is enlarging the pin raster. The result was the development of patented standard IR transistor enclosures Super-220 (TO-273) and Super 247 (TO-274) - for better heat dissipation and to achieve higher currents than comparable transistor in TO-220 and TO-247 enclosures.

The enclosures are both THT type, like different types of TO220, TO-262, I-Pak or TO-247, as well as SMD, including D-Pak, D2Pak, TSOP, TSSOP, SO SOT-23 and SOT-223. Of course, the types and sizes of enclosures used are adequate for operating current and voltage of the transistors, while worth emphasizing is the
A good example is the transistor IRFB4127PBF in a standard TO220AB enclosure, in standard housing, with the 200V drain source breakdown voltage and a 76A maximum continuous current drain (at TC = 25°C) or the IRLB3813PBF model in the same enclosure, which parameters are 30V/260A, respectively. The same applies to IRFP4668PBF transistors (200V/130A, respectively) and IRFP4004PBF (40V/195A) in bigger enclosures TO247AC and IRFS4127PBF (200V, 76A) /

For example, the IRFBA1404PPBF transistor in the Super-220 enclosure has the drain-source breakdown voltage of 40V and a maximum continuous drain current of 206A (at TC = 25°C), while parameters of the IRFPS3810PBF transistor (in a Super-247 enclosure) are 100V /170A, respectively. The constant striving to improve parameters that are often contradictory, such as minimum size, maximum drain current, minimum power losses in conducting and switching state and possibly highest switching frequencies, lead to the need for completely new enclosures for surface mounting that would provide better heat dissipation efficiency of the the die, lower pin resistance and lower parasitic capacitances and inductances. 274 (Super 247) for through-hole installation and D-Pak/D2-Pak for surface mounting. The company now offers hundreds of types of IGBTs - both discrete and with the integrated antiparallel diode, with a maximum continuous collector currents from a few to more than 100A and maximum collector-emitter voltages of up to 1200V. But most of these are elements of a few dozens of amperes for 600V or even 1200V voltage, in TO220AB and TO-247AC enclosures. Other important parameters include collector-emitter voltage in ON state, which is within the range of 1.3 - 4.3V, depending on the size of the transistor, and a maximum switching frequency from single kilohertz to up to 150kHz. Depending on the parameters, mainly the switching frequency, IGBTs are used in slower smalland medium-power energy conversion systems, such as drivers of heating elements, motor drive systems and relatively slow power converters, where IGBTs are still a more cost-effective alternative to MOSFETs.
IGBTs For applications that require higher currents and voltages and where lower switching frequency is sufficient, insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are used. Such transistors significantly complement the International Rectifier's product offer. It seems that their designers share a similar idea as in the case of MOSFET components described above: to pack switching elements with maximum power in popular and cheap tran-

maximum switching frequency of 1kHz. Similar applications include the IRG4BC40SPBF transistor in TO-220AB enclosure, with parameters 600V, 60A, 1.5V and 1kHz, respectively. Much faster elements, having a maximum switching frequency of 30kHz, are
IRGP4063DPBF transistors with integrated diodes in TO-247AC enclosure (600V, 96A), IRGB4062DPBF in TO-220AB enclosure (600V, 48A) and IRG4BC20KD-SPBF in D2 -Pak enclosure (600V, 16A). Transistors and modules for special applications In addition to universal elements, International Rectifier offers a wide range of transistors and transistor modules designed for use in specific areas and specific applications. The company offers not just power components, but also entire sets consisting of a series of associated discrete components, integrated circuits and modules, supplemented by relevant technical and application documentation. And while these other elements are not the subject of this text, it is worth to mention them, as they greatly simplify the implementation of target projects. A very large group of the company's offer are transistors for automotive applications, meeting stringent requirements for temperature range, resistance to surges, shock and vibration and other adverse factors found in the automotive environment. Required qualification for such applications has a large part of MOSFETs produces by IR, including both transistors in SMD enclosures such as AUIRF1405ZS

be delivered over standard Internet connections “Plug and Play” pair – a Protector, which stores the packets until it is certain that they have been correctly received, and a Sentinel which monitors the health of the video stream by watching for packet loss and requests packets to be resent from the Protector’s cache only if required. This is ensured by VideoFlow’s patents, which cover techniques to minimise the number of packets that have to be resent. This solution enables the bandwidth requirement to be reduced to keep operational costs down compared to the traditional solution of using Forward Error Correction that requires additional bandwidth of up to 50% to enable lost data to be recovered. This is not always successful. VideoFlow’s solution can work with internet connects as slow as 200Kb/s
and yet can deliver the desired quality. Traditionally, premium live video channels require a “pair of leased lines” so
that there is always a backup in case the first one fails. Although this ensures a 24x7 service, it is very costly. Industry reports show that Service Level Agreements that guarantee bitrate and bandwidth along with limiting packet loss are incredibly expensive. VIDEOFLOW www.video-flow.com
Delivering the Unimaginable with Stratix 10 FPGAs and SoCs Stratix 10 FPGAs and SoCs are designed to enable the most advanced, highest performance applications in the networking, communications, broadcast and compute and storage markets while slashing system power. Leveraging Intel’s 14 nm TriGate process and an enhanced high-performance architecture, Stratix 10 FPGAs and SoCs have an operating frequency over one gigahertz, 2X the core performance of current high-end 28-nm FPGAs. For high-performance systems that have the most strict power budgets, Stratix 10 devices allow customers to achieve up to a 70 percent reduction in power consumption at performance levels equivalent to the previous generation. Altera announced the technology details of Stratix 10 FPGAs and SoCs as part of the Generation 10 portfolio introduction and will disclose more details on the product at a later date. AUTOMATION HIGH FREQUENCY CONTRAST SENSORS FOR UV, VIS ȘI IR LIGHT RANGE The new SPECTRO-1 series made by german specialist Sensor Instruments is characterized by its speed. At a frequency of 200kHz objects are scanned and displayed accurately. The small size of light spot with a diameter of 0.2 mm ensures bright lighting. The sensors are a single-channel, i.e. they capture the analog signal of a receiver and evaluate it out. The sender may use different light sources such as White light, UV light, IR light or laser. The detected analog signal is outputted through a voltage and a current output. With the included software, different evaluation modes for the analog signal can be selected. The device is equipped with two analog outputs (0V ... +10V and 4 ... 20mA) and three digital outputs provided (100kHz). Depending on the evaluation of the analog signal, two digital outputs of the will be
active. A digital input allows an external “teaching” of the sensor. The signal acquisition with the SPECTRO-1 sensor is very flexible. Operated in AC mode it is insensitive to ambient light while in DC mode it is extremely fast. An OFF function turns off the sensor’s integrated light source and switches to the DC mode to detect so-called “self-luminous” objects. Stepless adjustment of the integrated light source, selectable gain of the receiver signal and an integral function allow the adjustment of the sensor on almost any surface or any “selfluminous” target. The communication between the PC and the sensor is either via RS232, USB or Ethernet (using a USB or Ethernet adapter). The provided PC software simplifies parameterization, diagnosis and the adjustment of
the sensor system (oscilloscope function). Sensor Instruments offers over 25 different products from the SPECTRO-1 series and covers a wide range of applications such as the detection of joints and notches or detection of perforation and hologram reference marks. SENSORS FOR WIND POWER Three specially adapted inductive sensors from Contrinex For use in wind turbines, Contrinex has developed three inductive sensors on the basis of its standard CLASSICS platform (series 600). These sensors have been specially adapted to cope with higher operating temperatures and an increased current load. Sensor types DW-AD-603-M12-734 and -733 from the EXTRA TEMPERATURE range feature components rated for operating temperatures from -25 to +100°C (standard version: - 25 to +75°C). Both types are embeddable and connection is via a five to six meter long PVC cable. Three of these sensors with an operating distance of two millimeters are located in the rotor of the wind turbine, where they determine the zero position of the rotating blades. In addition, each of the four motors that rotate the wind turbine about its vertical axis is also equipped with four of these M12 sensors. Here they determine the reset position. Another inductive sensor detects the zero position of the rotor. For this purpose, Contrinex has modified a DW-AD-613-M30 type sensor from the BASIC range. This sensor differs from the standard model by having a maximum load current of 400 mA (standard version: 200 mA). Connection is via a fivemeter long PVC cable. The operating distance of this nonembeddable sensor is 15 mm. In addition to their extended temperature range, extraordinary temperature compensation and high precision, these sensors provide an excellent price-performance ratio. They are also vibration and shock resistant with characteristics that make them ideal for use in vehicles, deep drawing presses and stamping applications.
CLASSICS technology family (series 600) Within the CLASSICS technology family, Contrinex offers cylindrical sensors in sizes from three millimeters in diameter to M30 that comply with the current standards. All sensors are available as normally open or closed DC versions with 3-wire technology and cable or plug connection. In sizes M12, M18 and M30 2wire AC/DC models are also available. 2-wire DC versions are available in sizes M8 to M30. Important protection features are factory installed, including short circuit and overload protection, full reverse polarity protection, induction protection, EMC protection, etc. In addition to cylindrical versions, Contrinex offers rectangular sensors in sizes 5 × 5 mm and 8 × 8 mm. The CLASSICS family also includes cubic devices (40 × 40 × 40 mm) with a connector in 4-wire PNP and NPN technology. Like the cylindrical sensors, rectangular versions also include LEDs and all protection features.

New ClearSource™ LED emitters from OMC enable precision sensing and detection OMC, the pioneer in optoelectronics - LED lighting, backlighting and industrial fibre optic transmission components – has introduced its ClearSource™ range of solid-state emitters that use a new die bonding technique to connect the LED chip electronically to the leadframe, eliminating ‘dark spots’ and improving beam precision. Standard LED optical sensors use a top-mounting wire bond to connect the LED chip to the anode or cathode. The bond wire obstructs the light output, giving rise to dark spots and patches in the beam which makes precise sensing and detection more difficult. In the new ClearSource series, the wire is bonded to the side of the chip, leaving the output beam unobstructed. This produces a very well-defined light beam which

enables high-accuracy sensing and detection. For even greater precision measurements that require near-parallel light emission, lenses can be incorporated.
Additionally, this die-bond configuration reduces capacitive effects within the diode, enhancing switching speed and reliability. Devices are available with standard apertures for 650nm and 850nm LEDs with ball-type narrow beam, flat, dome, or drip encapsulation lensing options. OMC www.omc-uk.com

Peratech’s new QTC Ultra Touch Screen technology goes behind the display so there is no light loss and longer battery life Peratech, the innovators in touch technology, has used its recently launched QTC™ Ultra Sensor to create a touch screen solution for OLED displays for phones, monitors and large interactive displays. The QTC Ultra Sensor is so sensitive that it can be placed behind the OLED display and still detect finger touches on the front of the display to create a touch screen interface. By positioning the touch screen sensor behind the display, there is no loss of light from the display enabling the battery life to be longer. This new QTC Ultra Touch Screen technology follows on from Peratech’s QTC Clear touch screen solution that was launched in 2011. QTC Ultra Touch Screen technology uses Peratech’s award winning QTC™ technology. Quantum Tunnelling Composite
material is anisotropic and changes its resistance when pressure is applied and only at the point where pressure is applied. This enabling it to be used to
make accurate, multi-touch location sensors that can respond to the lightest of touches for the familiar range of touch screen gesture inputs such as squeeze, stretch, flick, etc. A deflection of a micron or so is needed for QTC Ultra to sense the touch through the layers of glass and display. Maxim Integrated’s 1-Wire Thermocouple-toDigital Converters Simplify Multisensor Industrial and Medical Designs Maxim Integrated Products, Inc. announced that it is now sampling the MAX31850/ MAX31851 cold-junction-compensated, 1-Wire® thermocouple-to-digital converters. The devices achieve ±2.0°C accuracy (not including sensor nonlinearity) while integrating all of the functions required for a complete thermocouple-to-digital solution. Additionally, the MAX31850/MAX31851’s 1-Wire interface allows multiple sensor locations to communicate and draw power over a single data line, greatly simplifying wiring requirements. Designers can use the MAX31850 or MAX31851 instead of multiple discret e components for accurate temperature measurement in medical, industrial, and solar applications. Because thermocouple output voltages are small and cold-junction compensation is needed to achieve
accurate results, the digitization of thermocouple signals can be a challenge. The MAX31850/ MAX31851 are the industry’s first
solution to integrate a discrete analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a highly accurate reference, a temperature sensor for cold-junction compensation, and a 1-Wire bus interface into a single chip. The versatile converters operate with several types of thermocouples, speeding system design, lowering system cost, and reducing the bill of materials (BOM). MAXIM INTEGRATED www.maximintegrated.com
The first single chip clock worldwide with a single output and integrated MEMS resonator in an SOT23 housing An extended frequency range from 1 to 110 MHz, power consumption of just 3.6mA and high stability between ±20 and ± 50 ppm are the main features of Sitime’s SiT9201 single chip clock equipped with an integrated MEMS resonator which is being marketed by MSC. The component, which is functionally compatible with conventional SiT1602, SiT8103 and SiT8008 clocks, is accommodated in a 5pin SOT23 housing just 2.8 × 2.4 × 1.2 mm3 in size which guarantees maximum security during soldering. A cost-effective purely visual inspection is sufficient to check the solder joints – x-ray examinations are not required. retention of up to 20 years. Furthermore, in order to enable a high level of functional safety and facilitate certification, a range of hardware functions — such as error correction code (ECC) flash, cyclic redundancy check (CRC) and memory protection unit (MPU) — were implemented on the FM4 MCUs. The new FM4 family of MCUs builds on Fujitsu's FM3 MCU family, and offers even more performance and peripheral functionality. For example, new trimming functions deliver internal oscillator accuracy of ±2 percent and the 12-bit A/D converter operates at twice the speed of previous versions. The multifunction timer for three-phase motors also features a number of enhanced functions, such as support for asymmetric PWM waveform output and multiple A/D start triggers. The minimum timing resolution possible is 6.25 nanoseconds. Furthermore, a Descriptor System data Transfer Controller (DSTC) was implemented to reduce the CPU’s workload and software overhead. The redesigned communications IP and clock rates of up to 20 MHz improve highspeed serial data communications via the serial peripheral interface (SPI). New high frequency OCXO from IQD delivers class leading phase noise performance down to -172dBc/Hz Launching at IMS 2013, IQD’s new IQOV-200 series Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) has been designed from the ground up to optimise low phase noise performance. Phase noise is caused primarily by semiconductor thermal noise but noisy resistors, capacitors and inductors can all have an effect, as can poor signal transfer paths due to circuit layout and design.
Good oscillator design consideration allow the IQOV-200 series to deliver phase noise performance of -172dBc/Hz at 100kHz offset and -160dBc/Hz at
1kHz offset based on a nominal oscillating frequency of 100MHz. Available at any frequency in the range 80MHz to 130MHz, the new model is initially housed in an industry standard 36 × 27mm IEC C008 Euro package although other package styles including surface mount variants can be considered to suit specific customer applications. The oscillator nominally operates from a 12 Volt power supply and consumes just 1 Watt of power at steady state, incorporating a very high level of internal voltage regulation so proving somewhat immune to external voltage variations. Drive capability is quoted at +6dBm into 50 Ohms. Operating over a standard temperature range of -20 to 60°C with an initial frequency stability of ±50ppb (parts per billion), other temperature ranges and stabilities can be considered as required. Low-power embedded radio modem with ReedSolomon error correction for long-range applications Circuit Design, Inc., the leading supplier of narrowband radio modules, has recently developed and released a 434 MHz low-power radio modem, the MU-2-R. Circuit Design’s MU series are modems for embedding in industrial equipment. They incorporate the RF circuit required for radio communication and a CPU for control, and data is exchanged with an external CPU using the UART serial interface based on commands. The MU-2-R is also supplied with an antenna. This complete solution allows you to develop equipment quickly using built-in radio, without having to pay much attention to the high frequency element. The MU-2-R is now 55% smaller than the earlier models, and is offered at a lower price. The MU-2-R also features FEC (Forward Error Correction) employing Reed-Solomon code that is used in satellite communications and compact discs. This ensures highly reliable radio communication even with a weak electric field or when burst noise is present. Designed for narrow band FM and with high receiver sensitivity, the MU-2-R has a communication range of 600 m (line-of-sight) with the 10 mW output authorized for the European harmonized ISM band. In addition, the built-in relay function enables wide-area telemetry systems and remote control applications covering several kilometers using battery-powered operation with 10 mW output. The features of the MU-2-R are explained below. • Most of the parts required for radio communication are built in The internal CPU handles all processes required for radio equipment design, including PLL control, insertion of preambles, wireless data links, and data input/output timing control. • Commands for measuring radio communication integrity In order to check communication integrity in the design stage and when the equipment is actually installed in the field, the MU-2-R is provided with commands for measuring the electric field intensity of the received signal and floor noise. You can also remotely check the electric field intensity of units placed in a distant location using commands. • Convenient functions enabling multiple networks The MU-2-R is preprogrammed with 127 radio frequency channels. You can also choose between 10 mW and 1 mW output. Flexible link IDs allow you to build 1:1, 1:N, and N:N systems. In addition, the relay function lets you cover a wider area. Besides remotely measuring the radio wave environment where the unit is installed, you can also change the frequency of the unit. • Develop products suitable for both Japanese and European markets The MU-2-R was first launched in the Japanese market where it has been very well received. It has received Technical Standard Conformity Certification in Japan and does not require any new radio authorization testing. The frequency of models for the Japanese market is 429 MHz. • Various interfaces RS-232 and USB interface boards are available to simplify development of MU-2-R systems. CIRCUIT DESIGN

Precise positioning in distress situations using Marine Digital Selective Calling (DSC) expansion sequence The CMX7031 and CMX7041 Multi-mode Two-way Radio (TWR) processors, operating in Marine VHF mode, have been enhanced to enable the ITU-R M.821 recommendation: Marine Digital Selective Calling (DSC) expansion sequences. Continuous transmission mode has also been included for use in distress alert situations. Standard marine DSC only allows a position resolution down to approximately one nautical mile (1nmi). In distress situations this is not accurate enough to pin-point a precise position. The DSC expansion sequences allow precise geographical coordinates to be transmitted, providing position accuracy to less than one metre (1m). Imagine the situation of a diver in rough seas with strong currents, calling to be picked-up. Providing a 1 square
nmi collection position will prolong recovery and potentially put the diver at risk. A Marine VHF radio with the DSC expansion sequences enabled, would allow the diver to transmit an
accurate collection position, down to 1 square metre, ensuring a safe and swift recovery. CML MICROCIRCUITS www.cmlmicro.com
RZ/A1 Group of MPUs enables implementation of WXGA graphics displays without the need for additional external memory MSC will offer the new products in the RZ/A1 Group of ARM® Cortex™-A9 embedded microprocessors (MPUs) from Renesas Electronics. With up to 10 MB of on-chip RAM and various peripheral functions such as camera input, hardware-accelerated graphics output, OpenVG 1.1 and audio, the new embedded MPU solutions are ideally suited for creating sophisticated human machine interface (HMI) implementations. The RZ/A1 Group has a 2D graphics acceleration engine that conforms to the OpenVG 1.1 interface. Since OpenVG uses vector graphics calculated during render time for the image composition, highly complex animations can be generated, without the need to connect some additional megabytes of external memory to the MPUs. In addition, as a
standardized programming interface, OpenVG 1.1 is compatible with many existing human machine interfaces (HMI) from third parties. The video display controller, which is also integrated, offers up to two video inputs for various formats, also including PAL, and can automatically scale the video signal. Formats up to 1999
× 2035 pixels are supported at the outputs. In addition, the controller provides functions such as video recording, image capture including JPEG encoding as well as diverse functions for image optimizations. MSC VERTRIEBS www.msc-ge.com
