Why a team room?
Grouping
Flexibility and Choice
A Typical Day What do you notice about movement? Can you see any groupings? What do you wonder?
Math Common Core Math Standards
developed by the state of New York based directly on the Common Core intense focus on numeracy and multiple strategies
“carefully crafted math situations to foster deep conceptual understanding of essential mathematical ideas, strategies, and models
What does math look like everyday? Flexible groupings - different lessons depending on needs Lessons - “Number Talks - mental math focus Choice based independent practice
What’s a 2nd grader working toward this year in math? At the end of the year, 2nd graders should be able to use many strategies and models to flexibly and fluently add and subtract within 100.
Strategies VS Models What’s the difference?
Using a variety of strategies and models now is building the foundation for increased Mental Math skills later.

Subtraction Strategies and Models Level 1 Counting All With Removal
Show the total, remove the amount being subtracted, and count what’s left.

ISB 2017
Level 2 Counting Up By Ones
Start with the number being subtracted and count up by ones to the total.
Level 3 Counting Back By Ones
Start with the total and count backwards the number being subtracted.
Adding Up in Chunks
Start with the number being subtracted and add on larger chunks to reach the total.
Removal in Chunks
Start with the total and break apart the number being subtracted into easier chunks to remove.
Making a Friendly Number
Adjust one number to create an easier problem.
Shifting
Place Value
Both numbers are adjusted by the same amount to keep the distance between the two numbers the same.
Break each number into expanded form (i.e., tens and ones) and then subtract like lace value amounts (subtract tens from tens and ones from ones). When regrouping is involved, negative values may be encountered.
Addition Strategies and Models Level 1
Level 2
Counting All
Counting On By Ones
Adding On in Chunks
Start at 1 and count all of the objects in both groups to find the total.
Start with one of the addends and count on from it to find the total.
Keep one addend whole and break the other into smaller chunks to make adding on easier.

Level 3 Doubles/ Near-Doubles
Making Tens
Making Friendly Numbers
Compensation
Place Value
Use a known doubles fact to figure out a related problem.
Break apart one or more addends so they can be recombined to add to ten, and then add on the leftovers.
Adjust one or more of the addends to make it a “friendly number, such as a multiple of 10, and then compensate for the adjustment in the answer.
Take from one addend and give the same amount to the other addend to make friendlier numbers.
Break each addend into expanded form (i.e., tens and ones) and then add like place value amounts (add tens and tens together, then ones and ones, and then find the total).
