City’s lights switch on is twice as good!

www.espmag.co.uk
Thousands packed into Cathedral Square and Queensgate shopping centre as Peterborough had a doubly good Christmas lights switch on this year. It looks like it was the busiest yet as Heart FM presenters Kev and Ros hosted an afternoon of entertainment on stage in Cathedral Square in the build up to the big switch on. There was music from singer Tom Korni, Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices, The Stringlers, a sing-along with The Key Theatre Dick Whittington panto cast and the Mayor of Peterborough was joined by JC Salsa to try out a few moves. There was a great atmosphere as the switch on drew close and then finally a burst of fireworks was followed by the city centre lighting up as the Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor David Sanders, Leader of the City Council, Councillor John Holdich and Father Christmas pressed the plunger. Santa’s elves had been handing out wristbands throughout the afternoon ahead of a huge prize draw in Queensgate as the action then moved inside the shopping centre. There was more entertainment here for the crowds before Mrs Claus joined Kev and Ros to start a huge prize give away for lucky wristband winners with the top prize a family holiday to Lapland donated by Thomas Cook. Then the winner of a competition to switch on Queensgate’s lights, 4-year-old Joshua Bolton, went up on stage to help press the button and the centre’s fantastic decorations lit up to huge applause. It also marked the official opening of Father Christmas’ grotto in the centre. So here it is, Merry Christmas everyone…!

AHH…TO BE 18 AGAIN… My youthful photo from 1998 with Boy George in last month’s column resulted in a surge of fan mail. Thank you and Christmas kisses to you all.
D
ecember 1998 was a special month because the first ESP Magazine was published, which means we’re 18! As you’d expect we’re in fantastic shape for 18, just as I was in 1992… pictured here on New Year’s Eve, ready to hit Cathedral Square for a snogfest. Being 18 was the best feeling, particularly when wearing that leather jacket bought from Whittlesey Market for £90. Eighteen is special and when I look back at these years spent with ESP, they’ve easily been the best of my adult life.
launch. Within minutes all my pre-prepared questions went out of the window. He just wanted a beer and grilled me about the best places in town where he could get a pint. He then told me I’d been super helpful and gave me a hug for a photo. Afterwards I somehow managed to cobble together a written interview transcript, which until now my editor thought was genuine. Oops…
I’ve got a stack of photos, some that I remember being taken and others not. Here’s a few I’ve randomly picked from our archives. Meeting Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has to be one of my best highlights. I’d interviewed him in Italy for a football magazine about three years previous and when I met him again at a charity dinner at Fratelli’s in Castor, I was hoping he’d remember me. He did. But only for the reason that I interviewed him in Neapolitan dialect, which amused him, since proper journalists interview in proper Italian. By now he spoke English, so this time the shoe was on the other foot! At this point in my career I’d interviewed dozens of famous footballers but Gianfranco was by far the most intelligent and sincere. At the other end of the spectrum was Chris Moyles. This was a bizarre chat in Waterstone’s in Bridge Street where he’d just finished a book
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
Interviewing Girls Aloud was probably my most nerve-racking (because I fancied Sarah) and frustrating (because Cheryl was acting like a diva). Sarah Harding is still the one and only female celebrity I gave my phone number to with devious intentions in mind. She never did call; she obviously couldn’t read my writing – sometimes my sixes look like zeros. I remember being in loads of other people’s photos whilst on ESP duty over the years and I’d love to see them. Please email me! pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk Happy 18th and Happy Christmas everyone!
It’s love handle nurturing season and here are some contributions to accelerated growth: Quality Street, Chocolate Orange, pigs in blankets, mince pies, Toblerone, Christmas pudding, cheesecake, mulled wine, crates of wine and beer, Ferrero Rocher, ‘Christmas drinks’, ‘Christmas nibbles’, ‘Christmas get-together’, ‘Christmas party’, ‘Christmas buffet’, ‘Christmas lunch’ and too much Babycham. Feeling sick yet?

The ESP team were invited along to check out a swanky new place in an unexpected location… eastern industry doesn’t usually conjure up images of palm trees, mood lighting and a glass floored suspended bar but hidden behind a plain white frontage on Padholme Road just look what we found! Local guys Matt Murphy and Simon Antill, who have years of experience in the business, are about to fulfil their ambitions to open their very own bar in the city. The minute they’re given the OK they’ll be swiftly moving in to refit the unit which was previously used as a learning centre.
Matt says you can expect a good vibe, premium drinks brands as opposed to the usual spirits – but not at a premium price tag – and a few unique products too.
Matt tells us Puzzles will have a stripped back, industrial style feel and should accommodate around 50 punters. He and business partner Simon are keen to get started – “We both share a similar vision and

I reckon our local street photographer and paramedic Chris Porsz was getting more headlines than Donald Trump last month. National TV and newspapers, radio and social media were all reporting on Chris’s excellent book Reunions, which since its November launch has sold almost 1,000 copies. I’ve bought three of them and that’s how much I love it. Chris’s concept of reuniting people he took photos of more than 30 years ago has made a national impact. But the book has struck a chord most in those of us who live in Peterborough and remember the characters, places and events.
And which one photo is Chris’s favourite? “That’ll be like choosing between my children. Impossible. They all mean something and I’ve loved recreating each and every one of them,” he told me. You can’t argue with that. Reunions is available from the Peterborough Visitor Information Centre, Coleman’s in Cowgate, Shrives in Westgate, Art in the Heart in Westgate Arcade and Waterstones priced £15. 99 and from www.chrisporsz.com. Reunions is a brilliant illustration of how innocent life seemed to be all those years ago. Every photo has a moving feel to it and each one has a story. I was only too pleased to help Chris make a couple of his reunions happen, which are two of my favourite images in the book.

Food Glori us Food MIDDELTONS STEAKHOUSE & GRILL There’s set to be a fresh flavour in Peterborough’s dining out quarter around Cathedral Square with Middletons Steakhouse & Grill planning to open early next summer. This £1million restaurant will be their seventh one with other Middletons in nearby Kings Lynn, Leicester and Milton Keynes.
Stephen added – “Peterborough sits well within our geographic area and is one of the fastest growing cities in the UK with excellent road and rail links. It’s seen massive investment and we’ve seen other brands come in. The city’s developed a great dining out scene which we’re keen to be a part of.”
Middletons Steakhouse & Grill first opened its doors in Middleton, Norfolk in July 2011 and has built its reputation on serving fantastic quality food, in stylish comfortable surroundings.
This news comes hot on the heels of other recent openings which has seen wagamama come to Peterborough and the new Pizza Parlour and Music Café open on Cowgate. It’s great to see things are looking up!
Managing director Stephen Hutton told ESP they had earmarked the city a long time ago – “We’ve wanted to come to Peterborough for the last three years and things hadn’t worked out until now. We’ve been in negotiations with the city council for the last few months and have now signed the lease and hopefully the site should be handed over around March next year.”

Restaurants will be festively trimmed and there are three different packages which you can check out on their website. On Boxing Day if you’ve had enough of granny and grazing on the Quality Street you can break out of the TV stupor and head to Peterborough Greyhound Stadium instead. Ethan takes a tube ride down the slopes
d n a g Tubin aning tobogg Skiing or snowboarding down Tallington Lake’s 120m Dry Ski slope may not be quite suited to everyone’s tastes or abilities or perhaps you have smaller children who’d love to join in but may be a smidge too teeny. Luckily there are some perfect fun alternatives on offer at the slopes too.
Tubing and tobogganing are simply easy fun that suit all shapes and sizes of people. These neat additions are perfect for casual family fun time so I took my kids Oonagh-Mae and Ethan along to give it a whirl and had a great laugh up and down the slopes.

The toboggans are nifty little onebum seats that need very little instruction, just point them in the right direction, sit your bum down, lift your feet and off you go! Whilst we had our time zipping around there were also several tiddly kiddies sliding down and marching straight up again having a great time and looking like they’d be happy there all day long. We had ourselves a few races and whilst I’d hoped my extra weight would help me plough down quicker than Sarah or the kids it seemed that the streamlined Ethan took the gold which I’ll blame on my beard catching the wind too much.
We then moved onto tubing which is basically sliding down the slope in a giant rubber doughnut! From the start point at the top you can have someone help launch you with a bonus spin so you twirl

It’s time to get the party started and wherever you’re heading, be it a city bar or a glamorous ball you’ve got to step up the style this season. As ever bling is most certainly in – if you can’t wear sequins now, when can you – and the trend for metalics is stronger than ever. River Island has everything from 80’s decadence to 90’s punk style influences, Quiz is pretty new to Queensgate and if you’re looking for some party glitz they have definitely got it covered from cocktail sequins to ballgown glamour. paparazzi Caught in the act? It’s been another great year with plenty of fantastic events in the Greater Peterborough area. As ever ESP’s team of photographers have been out and about capturing you in the act of having a good time and sometimes we can’t always fit it all in so in this issue we’re catching up on a few events. Back in May the Cancer Research event Pretty Muddy came to Burghley Park in Stamford for the first time and was a huge success. Peterborough’s arts festival organised by Vivacity brought us some amazing performances and also saw a Steampunk takeover at the museum. Then the annual two day Italian Festival brought Cathedral Square to life with a taste of Italy in September. We’ve enjoyed covering this area’s events for the last 18 years and look forward to featuring many more in 2017! You can view all our Paparazzi pics on Facebook.

Brendan Cole
“I didn’t like being dead! It was a horrible way to see your name. I took myself off to hospital and all of a sudden I was ‘rushed to A&E’. It really didn’t happen like that but better [the press] are talking about you than someone else!” he laughed. And whilst not dead, his illness did force him to take time off and watch Anastasia dance, with stand in partner Gorka, from his sofa – something he admits was “frustrating”. But when it comes to celebrity partners, winning clearly isn’t everything to Brendan. “I’d rather have a celebrity partner that’s really rubbish but great fun, than a good partner who’s boring. You’ve got four and a half months in the rehearsal room so if it’s not going well, it can be really tricky. You don’t want good partners every year, you don’t want bad, I’ve had all sorts, from Rachel Hunter, a supermodel on a Christmas special to…” Fiona Phillips? I ask, cheekily. “You said that, not me!” he grins.

ESP’s resident Strictly Come Dancing fan Sarah Tempest couldn’t wait to tango over to Springfields in Spalding to grab a word with professional dancer Brendan Cole when he turned on their Christmas lights…
I
t’s fair to say 2016 has been a funny old year with bonkersness occurring that even old Nostradamus would’ve struggled to predict. Britain’s leaving the EU, Donald Trump is (nearly) the President of the USA, people actually voted for Honey G in the X Factor – and Ed Balls has Gangnam Styled his way to be a surprise hit on BBC show Strictly Come Dancing.
As Brendan is out of the competition, he can look forward to Christmas with his family. “It’s my daughter’s birthday on Christmas Day so we have a very jam packed day with lots of presents. I like boy’s toys, my wife got me a £30 hammer last year and it was the best present ever! I’m easily pleased. But I’ll be happy as long as everyone’s together and we’re having a good time.”
28

Good dancers like Laura Whitmore and Daisy Lowe made an early exit. Anton may have got the obligatory wrinkly celeb partner (71-year-old Lesley Joseph) but she gave the young ’uns a run for their money (my kids on four packs of Haribo have less energy than her) and gave it a good crack.
Shortly before his untimely exit from the show with dance partner Anastacia, I caught up with the very much alive Brendan Cole when he was special guest at the Springfields Outlet Spalding Christmas lights switch on, for all the REAL Strictly gossip.
And what of the resident Dave Arch Band, featuring Peterborough singer Hayley Sanderson? “I get on really great with the band,” Brendan reveals “they’re all great. It’s crucial just to have that live energy in the studio, it moves it up a notch. I tell them they’re the second best band in the UK!”
“I’d rather have a celebrity partner that’s really rubbish but great fun, than a good partner who’s boring.”
You really couldn’t make it up; dropped lifts, cringy ‘ooh aahs’ and ‘drunk uncle with sciatica’ dancing, this MAMIS (middle aged man in sequins) making it through week after week really was living proof that we Brits have an incredible sense of humour.
Will Young quit in week three citing ‘personal reasons’ (leaving many to speculate on his previous week’s ‘spat’ with Head Judge Len Goodman) while Eastenders actress Tameka Empson became this year’s celebrity that we’ll forget was ever on Strictly and tabloid headlines screamed ‘Strictly Brendan is dead’.
series?“I haven’t got my eye on Len’s Head Judge chair as such. It’s a funny one because, with Brucie, although he’s no longer there, he’s still there at the heart of the show and I feel that it will be very much the same with Len. “Whoever replaces him will have to try and make it their role and if I was in the mix for that, that would be very nice.” But, like Len, Brendan is now part of the Strictly furniture so surely it would work? #Brendanforheadjudge?! “Well, yes,” he laughs “but we’ll let Len finish out the year then see what plans the BBC have.”
But whilst Saturday night wouldn’t be the same without a bit of Brendan’s lycra clad hip action, what about the upcoming vacancy, with Head Judge Len Goodman leaving at the end of this
But, before the turkey can be stuffed and the stockings filled, there’s the small matter of who will lift the glitterball trophy? I’m hoping it will be #teamrinder all the way, as the Judge has proved himself to be hilarious, entertaining and a surprisingly good dancer, as well as a thoroughly decent bloke. The only thing that’s certain though is that, whoever it is, as we celebrate our 18th birthday here at ESP, we’ll be legally raising a huge glass of Prosecco to the winner. And already looking forward to doing it all over again next year. Cheers!

WWE 2K17 (X1/PS4/360/PS3)
2K builds on the success of its revitalised WWE gaming franchise – by offering subtle tweaks that makes for a weighty wrestling experience. Much like with its NBA series, if it ain’t broke there’s no need to fix it, and this year it just offers minor improvements – alongside the all important roster which is the biggest to date – which mainly comes in modes where there are more than two combatants.

It’s bizarrely missing the ‘showcase’ option which is a bit of a mystery, but there’s so much to enjoy here – like doing a Goldberg v Brock Lesnar Survivor Series dream match reincarnation – that you can’t help but be impressed with the overall package.
For the first time we’re getting the chance to enjoy the best festive movies in the beautiful setting of the Cathedral nave.
You can definitely smell what 2K is cookin’… There’ll be a festive atmosphere with popcorn, sweets and drinks on sale and dressing as your favourite character from these movies, or wearing your Christmas jumper, is positively encouraged!
MAFIA III (PS4/X1/PC)
This latest outing for the generally commendable open world shooter series breaks new ground in story telling – but does go ‘back to the well’ once too often with its gameplay mechanics. There’s a lot to admire with the lavishly scripted setting of a reimagined 1968 New Orleans – called New Bordeaux – as Vietnam vet Lincoln Clay returns home for vengeance over the Italian mafia for the brutal slaying of the Black Mob, which was the closest thing he had to a family.
On Friday December 2 the films will be The Muppet Christmas Carol, with Michael Caine as Scrooge, followed by Elf, in which Will Ferrell plays Buddy, the man raised by elves at the North Pole who sets off for New York City in search of his real father.

Potentially the last major expansion for the first iteration of 2014’s Game of the Year adds some hefty weight to this online role-playing shooter. Rise of Iron is a short-lived, but noteworthy, entry in the canon (which opens up another area on Earth dubbed ‘The Plaguelands’), and adds a singleperson campaign, side quests and new Crucible maps to the franchise, coming alongside the original game and all previous expansions in this package – which particularly covers everything for Destiny newbies.

CHRISTMAS
Perhaps it’s the fact that Mikey Clarke was born on Christmas Day that triggered his obsession with all things festive. Here our soon-to-be birthday boy talks about his favourite time of the year…
QUIZ
Give the guys what they really want this Christmas! I once heard someone say, “Guys don’t grow up… they just get better toys.” As the proud owner of a fine selection of Nerf guns, remote control cars and a football table, I’d have to agree.
Photos: Mitch Brewster
So, buy your fella, son and brother what they really want this Christmas. Let them have that Lego, remote control helicopter or games console. If they can’t be a big kid at Christmas, when can they be? Of course, I don’t speak for all men from Peterborough and beyond – I’m sure some would love nothing more than a knitted cream sweater. But, I’m confident that many will agree with me. And if you’re one of those guys that does and just so happens to be reading this article sat next to your lady friend, why not leave this page open, casually slide it under their noses and maybe – just maybe – they’ll get the hint.
’Tis the season to be sat at your work desk, looking like you’re working, when in actual fact you’re frantically shopping online for a gift to give that friend you unexpectedly received something from – leaving you feeling obliged to do the same. It’s that time of the year when you see distant relatives and after a few days you’ve asked every question you can possibly think of – leaving you with nothing new to say. For just a moment, stop pretending to work and give yourself something to talk about with cousin Jimmy. Gather those around you and take part in our festive quiz. Why not have the losing team make the tea and coffee for the rest of the day? Q1)
In Charles Dickens' novel A Christmas Carol, who was Scrooge's dead business partner?
Q2)
The song White Christmas was first performed in which 1942 film?
Q3)
'And all the bells on earth shall ring, on Christmas day in the morning...' is from which Christmas carol?
Q4)
Who banned Christmas in England between 1647 and 1660?
Q5)
In the song 'The Twelve Days Of Christmas', how many swans were a-swimming?
Q6)
It turns out there are a fair few birthdays throughout December. To name just a few, there’s mine (Christmas Day if you didn’t get the prior hint – check me out aged 18!), Jesus (of course!) and ESP Magazine. Yes, the very mag that you’re reading right now has been going for an impressive 18 years – with many more years to come. Happy Birthday!
'Who' catches the Grinch red handed stealing Christmas presents?
Q7)
Other than blue, which other colours are mentioned in the Elvis song 'Blue Christmas'?
To celebrate this milestone, I’ve listed below my favourite 18 rated festive flicks to watch this Christmas.
Q8)
In December 2004, Madame Tussaud's London, offended many by displaying a nativity scene featuring which two celeb waxwork models as Joseph and Mary?
Q9)
Father Christmas is known as Pai Natal in which European country?
Despite myself (and many other men out there) wanting what are essentially toys for Christmas, we often get anything but. Don’t get me wrong, like most guys I’m happy to receive anything – after all, it’s nice to be thought of – but I feel that a lot of people tend to buy things that THEY want others to have rather than something the recipient actually wants. I often head to town on Boxing Day and I’ve lost count of the amount of guys I see embarrassingly walking around wearing jumpers that were clearly gifts, which they’ve felt obliged to wear.
If just one person exchanges a pair of socks for that Star Wars Droid you’ve been asking for – thanks to this page – then my job here is done.
Happy Birthday ESP Magazine!
Chances are, those of you with kids have been made to watch the same movie over and over again. It probably involves an animated reindeer singing a song that you’ve not been able to get out of your head. When the little ones are asleep, why not stick on something completely different?
Q10) In the classic TV Show, what was Mr Bean searching for when he got his head stuck in a turkey? BLACK CHRISTMAS
BAD SANTA
This was written by Shane Black – which many film fans will know means it’s going to be set at Christmas time! A great cop movie with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as reluctant partners.
Generally regarded as the first of its kind, (made four years before Halloween) this is a great slasher movie. It seems cliché watching it now, but only because so many other films have been influenced by it.
Yes I know Bad Santa is actually rated 15, but with Billy Bob Thornton starring as a drunken, incontinent, dirtyminded, chain-smoking and foul-mouthed departmentstore Santa – this certainly deserves a mention.

LETHAL WEAPON
The best thing about this classic action movie is how it uses Christmas for dark comic effect like Bruce Willis strapping a gun to his back with ‘Seasons Greetings’ tape and who can forget that “Now I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho!” scene?!
1) Jacob Marley. 2) Holiday Inn. 3) I Saw Three Ships. 4) Oliver Cromwell. 5) Seven. 6) Cindy Lou Who. 7) Red, green and white – ‘decorations of red on a green Christmas tree’ and ‘You'll be doin’ all right with your Christmas of white’. 8) David and Victoria Beckham. 9) Portugal. 10) His watch.

You can't avoid danger if you don't see it coming. Play it safe. Be ready for any weather, any time with proper wiper blade maintenance.
Wet roads increase braking distance, giving you less time to react to danger on the road. Make sure yours don’t let you down.
Check your tyres to make sure you have the correct tread for the weather conditions and plenty of grip.
• Chattering or streaking wipers indicate that replacement is necessary • Always replace wipers in pairs
• Replace wipers at least every six months or as needed
Don't forget the rear wiper! Rear wipers can deteriorate just as quickly and are just as important.
The components of hydraulic braking systems are subject to considerable stress and as a result require frequent inspection and routine maintenance. It’s recommended to have your brake fluid changed every 2 years regardless of the vehicle age.
The legal requirement for minimum tread depth on your tyres is 1.6milimetres, across the central 3/4 of the tyre around the complete circumference of the tyre. For safety – replace your tyres before the legal limit is reached.
POWER ON... The cold and wet can play havoc with your battery so make sure it won’t let you down. FRM will check your current car battery for FREE and recycle your old one. We have a large range, type, voltage and guarantees on car batteries.
AIR CONDITIONING... Aircon isn’t just for the summer and FRM are air conditioning specialists, installing, repairing and re-charging. DRIVING UP STANDARDS
DRIVE SAFE THE MORNING AFTER It’s party season and we all want a safe one so it’s worth keeping in mind The Safer Peterborough Partnership’s reminders about the legal and personal consequences of drinking and driving over the festive season. Drink drive incidents occur all year, but it’s no surprise there’s an increase at this time as we all head out for preChristmas drinks, parties and celebrations. So make sure you not only think about how you’re getting home after a night out – keep in mind you could still be over the limit the next day! It takes longer than you might think to be safe to drive. On average it takes around one hour per unit of alcohol, though this can vary depending on a number of factors. Because of this, there’s a real risk that although you wouldn’t dream of drinking and driving you might still be unwittingly over the limit the morning after so driving to work, doing the school run, popping to the shops or to
see friends after a night out could still be a no-no. It’s worth taking a look at this video http://think.direct.gov.uk/videomorning-after.html If you drive at twice the legal alcohol limit you’re at least 30 times more likely to cause a road crash and any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive. You may think you’re in control but your reactions will be slower, you have a reduced field of vision and poorer judgement of speed and distance, you’re likely to be overconfident and take more risks. Nobody wants a conviction, a ban, a fine or a criminal record for the new year! For more info visit www.morning-after.org.uk

Christmas is a great time for health and beauty fanatics… so many options for us to add to our Christmas lists! It’s that time where you can get a loved one or best mate to treat you to something you might have had your eye on all year. So, on this page there’s a little reminder of some of my favourite products I’ve reviewed this year – and what you’ll find on my Christmas list (take note mum and boyfriend!)
THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS – GET SOME SLEEP! With all this talk of Christmas, The Sleep Council has been sharing some health advice to make sure we all stay well rested and on good form this holiday season. Present buying, wine drinking and party going are the most common causes of a poor night's sleep at Christmas, according to them! That doesn’t surprise me at all. If you're not getting as much rest as you need, try following these simple tips to help yourself to get a better night's sleep: Stick to Routine: Try as much as possible to keep regular sleeping hours. Also, regular, moderate exercise such as swimming or walking can help relieve the day's stresses and strains. Create a Restful Environment: Keep the Christmas decorations to the other parts of your home – your bedroom should be kept for rest and sleep and it should be neither too hot, nor too cold; and as quiet and dark as possible. Don't Over-Indulge: Too much food or alcohol, especially late at night, can play havoc with sleep patterns. Alcohol may help you fall asleep initially, but will interrupt your sleep later on in the night. It’s hard in the party period but try to swap to water a couple of hours before bedtime. Make Time for ‘Me’ Time: Try to relax and insist on some ‘me time' before going to bed. Have a warm bath, listen to some quiet music or do some yoga – these all help to relax both the mind and body.
NYX – MY NEW MAKEuP MuST HAvE The launch of LA brand NYX Professional Makeup’s glorious 16ft counter at Boots in Queensgate was a definite highlight of the year… and I was there at the front of the queue. I was so excited that Boots will be stocking the brand – which is known for its gorgeous makeup with an affordable price tag. I bought three eyeliner pens in green, purple and black for just £5 each… And I’ll be restocking just in time for a smoky look for a New Year’s Eve party!
THE BOdY SHOP ROCKS The Body Shop have so many great products, but my top tip for this Christmas is definitely their Oils of Life range. I tried the face cream and essence oil infused with black cumin seed, rosehip and camellia seed oils. Everything from the packaging to the product’s texture and smell makes it feel top quality, at a reasonable enough price. I’ve used the face cream (£25) for most of the year now and my skin feels amazing.
My Favourite Barkers Product
Crazy angel Thank you so much to Barkers for their support this year of the Health and Beauty page. I’ve tried so many wonderful products they have in store – but my favourite had to be a very memorable moment – a salon tanning spray called Crazy Angel. I’m pretty pale skinned, so I went for the lightest colour option available. The results were great, no patches and it lasted for a good week before it needed topping up. It’s definitely on my Christmas list so next January I’ll be glowing whilst everyone else looks cold and pale.

POINTY CHRISTMAS TWINKLE TOES As we approach a new year, we often all try and think of a new hobby that will be both enjoyable and improve our health. Why not try something different, like an adult ballet class. I went along to Saldance School in Fengate with Rhoda to try one of her classes. On Wednesdays you can join her at 7pm for beginner’s ballet and 8pm if you have some experience. Rhoda provides a fun and friendly class which eventually works towards grades! We performed some bar work and then some ballet dance routines which were all amazing for the core, posture, balance and flexibility. In the new year, they’ll be looking for new participants, so check out their website and give Rhoda a call for more details at www.saldance.co.uk

r u o y w 1. Kno limits booze For some of us, the festive season is a time of excess drinking and partying. It’s good to relax and socialise, but drinking too much too quickly on any single occasion can increase your risk of misjudging risky situations, of accidents resulting in injury and causing death in some cases, and of losing self-control, like having unprotected sex. To reduce your health risks: Limit how much you drink Drink more slowly Drink with food Alternate with water or non-alcoholic drinks In the long term, drinking more than 14 units a week (about six pints of average strength beer or 10 small glasses of low strength wine) can also lead to a wide range of long-term health problems including cancer, stroke and heart attack. So at the end of the festive season, why not consider signing up for Dry January and taking a month off alcohol?
r e i h t l a e 2. A h as Christm dinner
Many of us will put on pounds during this Christmas season. We can eat 6,000 calories on Christmas Day alone, which is about three times as many calories as we need in a day. You can make this Christmas a healthy one and still enjoy delicious food. Christmas dinner can provide a healthier plate of food with just a few small changes. Removing the turkey skin before serving will reduce the fat intake. Cutting potatoes and parsnips bigger before roasting will reduce the fat they absorb. Fill one third of your plate with vegetables and avoid putting any butter or fat on these. If you still have room for dessert then serve Christmas pudding with low fat-custard or try fruit salad instead. Resist the urge for large portions or second helpings.

December is one of the most common months for people to get food poisoning. Allow at least 48 hours to defrost a large turkey. Plan your cooking time in advance, allowing extra time if cooking the bird with stuffing. When you cut into the thickest part of the turkey, none of the meat should be pink and juices should be clear. Tips to avoid poisoning are to wash your hands often and wash worktops before and after preparing foods. Avoid cross contamination by keeping raw meat, poultry, seafood and eggs (including their juices) away from ready-to-eat foods and eating surfaces. Wash your veg and cook foods at the proper temperature. Refrigerate promptly and don’t leave perishable foods out for more than two hours.

It would be rather Scrooge-like to suggest that you don’t eat any treats over the festive period. But rather than mindlessly popping whatever is in front of you in your mouth, spend a moment thinking about whether you really want it, or are just eating it because it’s there. Wake up to breakfast for a healthy start to the festive season. Eating a healthy breakfast gives you energy and can help to cut down on morning snacking. Try adding seasonal fruits, like satsumas or dried cranberries, to wholegrain cereal or porridge for a festive start to your 5-a-day. If you don’t want to ‘shake your belly like a bowl full of jelly’ it’s best to bypass the chocolate boxes and instead look for the healthier treats such as fruit and vegetable sticks or unsalted nuts. Let’s be honest, some of us get through the entire Christmas period eating no more fruit than the satsuma in the Christmas stocking. It’s still important to get your 5-a-day, to help you stay in good health throughout the party season. Ensure that your Christmas shopping list enables you to fill up the fruit bowl and keep it within sight.
y p p a H . 5 n o i t a r d y h We need 6-8 glasses of fluid every day to stay hydrated. Many soft drinks can be high in sugar, this adds to our calorie intake which can lead to weight gain. Plain or sparkling water are healthy choices, add a slice of citrus fruit for natural flavour. If you’re hosting, make big pitchers of water readily available everywhere.
ly n o e h T 7. r e d w o p white nt is you wa snow The party season can be a time when you feel put under pressure to try illegal drugs. The reality is that most people don’t take drugs, so if you refuse you’re in the majority. Try to understand who is offering you the drugs and why – friends should understand if you say no, people you don’t know very well may expect something in return. Since May 2016, it’s now illegal to supply drugs that used to be known as ‘legal highs’. These drugs are often tested on you, they come with little or no research into their effects, and in some cases can be as harmful as drugs which have been classed as ‘illegal’ for a long time. More information’s available on the ‘Ask Frank’ website.
of n o s a e 6. S er w o p l l i good w Stopping smoking is the single best thing you can do for your health. It can be a tough one to go ‘cold turkey’ and quit in the festive season. But you don’t need to do it alone as the local Stop Smoking Service (call 0800 376 56 55) is there to support you all the way, including helping you access medications like Nicotine Replacement Therapy and Champix on NHS prescription. These medications will increase your chances of successfully stopping and really help when you’re out and about with friends and family this Christmas and at times when you’d normally have a cigarette. When you socialise more you may smoke more. Avoid this by taking a limited amount of cigarettes out with you or place them high on top of a cupboard so you have to get steps to reach them. With the expense of the season, spending on average £60 a week on cigarettes could go to better use. So, with a little willpower and a lot of free help from trained specialist advisors you can have a fresh start to the new year.
r e d n u g 8. Kissisntletoe the mi If you practise unsafe sex you may find yourself with an unwanted present of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) or pregnancy. STIs and pregnancy rates increase post-Christmas. Using a condom is the best way to keep you safe. Be prepared and carry a condom – carrying a condom means you’re looking after your sexual health. If you haven’t used a condom or it slips off during sex, you should get tested for STIs or emergency contraception, available up to 72 hours later. You can get free condoms, emergency contraception, or to get checked and treated for STIs at the Integrated Contraception and Sexual Health (iCaSH) clinic at Kings Chambers, 39-41 Priestgate, PE1 1JL. The service is free and confidential, even if you are under 16. You can also get free online chlamydia testing at www.freetestme.com.
s s e c x e he t f f o n r 9. Bu bwebs and co Aim to include some physical activity in your day to help burn off some of the additional calories eaten over Christmas, such as a post dinner walk with the family. Still aim to do your 150 minutes of physical activity each week – remember that this can be as easy as half an hour a day of brisk walking, which makes a real difference to your health. Ice skating is a good form of cardio exercise that improves balance and co-ordination. A few lengths of a pool is a great low-impact exercise which works all the muscles, burns lots of calories and is good for stress-busting.

s d l o c p e 10. Ke at bay The flu vaccine can prevent you from catching flu – so if you’re over 65, are pregnant, or have a long term condition that means you’re entitled to a free NHS flu vaccine, then it’s worth making sure you take this up through your GP surgery or some local pharmacies. Apart from that, the best way to protect yourself from bad colds and flu is to have a healthy lifestyle – eating a healthy diet, taking regular exercise and drinking plenty of warm drinks in the winter months. Cold temperatures won’t give you a cold on their own – but getting cold does allow the viruses which cause the common cold to multiply more quickly.
e h t s i T ’ . 11 e b o t n o seas t jolly, no d stresse Jolly is the last thing many of us feel with overspending, cooking, cleaning, endless ‘to do’ lists and visitors we could do without. Try to keep a sense of humour and proportion. Is it really the end of the world if the carrots are overcooked or if the mantelpiece is a bit dusty? Remember, Christmas is just one day out of 365 and it isn’t worth stressing over.
12. Keep warm, ell keep w If you are an older person, a young child or have an ongoing health problem, cold winter weather can be bad for your health. Getting too cold can raise your risk of chest infections, and can also raise your blood pressure and increase your risk of heart attack or stroke. There are simple things you can do to reduce these risks and stay warm and well: • Check that your boiler is working. Before a cold snap hits, it’s worth checking to see if your boiler is fully working. • Heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F).You might prefer your main living room to be slightly warmer. Keep your bedroom window closed on winter nights because breathing cold air can be bad for your health as it increases the risk of chest infections. • Eat well. Food is a vital source of energy, which helps to keep your body warm. • Keep active when you’re indoors. Try not to sit still for more than an hour or so. • Wear several layers of light clothes. Because they trap warm air better than one bulky layer. • Look after yourself. If you go out in the cold weather wear extra clothes. Don’t go out if it’s too cold. • Make sure you’re receiving all the help that you’re entitled to. Learn how to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating and keep up with your energy bills at www.gov.uk/phe/keep-warm

ight, now we’ve got the sucking up out of the way (!) we can look forward to another major event in the calendar, and that of course is Christmas! So on behalf of everybody connected to Peterborough United, may I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and I hope you all have a fantastic time with your friends and family. It’s always busy at a football club at this time of the year. We have games coming thick and fast and they often say that the league table really starts to sort itself out at this time – we are in a decent position at the time of writing and hopefully we can kick on in 2017. As a football club, it’s vitally important that we engage with the local community. We can do that in so many ways. From producing a video to coincide with anti-bullying week, to giving away tickets via a schools programme, it’s increasingly important to make the ABAX Stadium a focal point in this community.
each child was given a free ticket to watch the Posh in action and not only that but their parent/guardian was given a half-price ticket offer too. The schools programme is very important to me and everyone at the club. To engage with local schoolchildren on a regular basis is vital. Children are the future support of the Posh. We need them to be backing their local club. Hopefully this programme will help with this. At this time of the year, it’s also important to visit those who are spending the festive period in hospital. Our annual visit to the Amazon Ward of the Peterborough City Hospital is an important date on the calendar. Thanks to Serpentine Green at Hampton, we were able to deliver a whole host of presents to children of all ages who are spending Christmas away from their families. You can view the pictures of that visit on the club’s website, www.theposh.com.

The ‘X Factor Xmas’ then gets into full flow at Halo on Saturday December 10 with this year’s finalist Gifty Louise. Gifty, who was tipped as a potential winner, was sensationally voted off after a fall out with Simon Cowell. There’s no doubt that she’s got a great voice and it’s bound to be a great night. With the final of X Factor not taking place until December 11, we can’t yet reveal the other performers that will make up the cast of their ‘X Factor Xmas’ special so check in at www.halo-peterborough.co.uk for the latest. www.espmag.co.uk
It’s Christmas party season, and what better way to start the party than by joining the start of Halo’s ‘X Factor Xmas’ celebrations and by being entertained by 2015 finalists Reggie n Bollie. After being mentored by Cheryl Cole, the boys proved to be the most popular act of the year. They’ve recently released a new track called New Girl which has already had over 4.6 million hits on You Tube. The boys will be there on Saturday December 3 and doors open at 10pm, so make sure you’re nice and early for this one as it’s bound to be a sell-out. For booth booking call 01733 343035, or check out all the event details at www.facebook.com/haloclublounge

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
Keith says...
I can’t believe it! ESP is 18 years old this month. It must mean that I’m getting older as well! The magazine was started in 1998 to bring information to those who enjoy life and who want to hear about their local area in an upbeat and positive way. In my radio days, I always found it a great source for what’s on in the Peterborough area. I have great memories of judging the ‘Face of ESP’ contest, and of the many talented local musicians that it’s kept me in contact with. Today we’re still providing a valuable hub for those interested in the social side of our city. Throughout that time ESP’s been under the editorship of Sharon McAllister, and I congratulate her and all the people who through the 18 years have helped to make it a continuous feature in our city lives.
XMAS EVE AND NYE LIVE AND LOUD Christmas and New Year always gives us the chance to celebrate and enjoy the holiday period. To help us do this a number of venues put on live music. There are so many different genres of live music on show, so to help you choose what’s right for you, I’ve selected a few of the alternatives that I know about. First of all, on Christmas Eve, the recently evolved Tiger Club will appear at Charters on the Town Bridge. I saw them a couple of months ago and the band have a very comprehensive set list, however their claim is they’ll play ‘anything and everything. If you want it, we'll play it.’ That sounds a great party recipe. At the Golden Fleece in Stamford a big theatrical rock voice will herald in Christmas as they bring back the popular Blane following his successful gig there in September.
The One Eyed Cats bring their very infectious performance of swing and rock ‘n’ roll to The Ploughman in Werrington, and if you want some heavy rock then The Cherry Tree in Woodston will feature Let There BDC. There’s much more choice on New Year’s Eve, and I’ve picked out a few for you to consider: That very powerful trio, Velocity will be at The Fayre Spot in Bretton. Over in Bourne, Smiths brings in the new year with the folk of Pennyless, whilst Revolver play their Indie anthems at The Angel. In the city centre of Peterborough Charters plays host to funk and soul specialists Groove Cartell. And the Brewery Tap will definitely have a party with 60’s covers band The Nuggets bringing in the New Year.
MUSICALITY WOWS THE CROWDS!
Photos: Chris Brudenell
I was gutted I couldn’t make it to the Musicality gig at the Peterborough Arena, but ESP sent Tiffany Wright along and I thought her review perfectly captured the atmosphere of a really important live music event in the city.
The night was a charity fundraiser and saw big names including Toploader, Scouting For Girls, B.O.B and Jay Sean take to the stage with none other than Vernon Kay hosting and DJ-ing. You can read Tiffany’s full review on www.espmag.co.uk but she reported back – “From the moment Toploader came on, their stage presence, accumulated through years and years of performances was evident. Their energy was met by the ever-growing crowds, with teens getting on each other’s shoulders to get a better look and singing along to the classic Dancing in the Moonlight, which finished their set on a euphoric high.

www.espmag.co.uk
“Something I’ve got to give to each of the acts, their crowd engagement was always remarkable. With Jay Sean coming out into the pit to take photos and sign something for a birthday girl who’d come all the way from Leicester just to see him, plus B.O.B crowd-surfing and signing t-shirts, it was pleasant to see that the acts were determined to make this night memorable for fans. And although they were diverse genres, the event flowed seamlessly with hilarious Vernon Kay presenting between the acts and urging people to donate to the chosen charities.”
In Woodston the Swiss Cottage plays host to The Electric Warriors and over at the other side of the city are The Fedz. The soul and rhythm and blues band are at The Ploughman, whilst at The Crab and Winkle, its reggae with Zeb Rootz. Quite understandably, a lot of the venues ticket events at this time of year, so it’s best to contact them to find out the situation beforehand rather than be disappointed on the night. Check our Gig Guide for even more options and keep an eye on www.espmag.co.uk for the very latest. Wherever you choose for your celebrations have a Merry Christmas!
raised a significant amount for charities the Injured Jockey’s Fund, the Matt Hampson Foundation, #teamgeorge and Stamford based children’s charity Anna’s Hope. So how did James manage to pull off such an amazing achievement? “I had the support of the important people around me. I went to Peter Gibbons at Lux Technical, Sharron at MN2S and Guy at Coalition Talent with a plan. They decided to listen, when they could've switched off. This is why we succeeded and attracted the support from big names where others haven't. The key is believing in people and taking the risk, that this time has paid off for them.” I’m pleased to reveal that James is planning to bring us more events in future so watch this space...
Incredibly Musicality is a business venture of young Stamford student James Ellis and ESP caught up with James after the event to see how he was feeling “I’m extremely happy with how the concert went,” James enthused. “I am not really too sure how everything went to plan, but it did. I am overwhelmed by the warm congratulations and responses from people in and out of the industry.” Around 3,000 people attended and the event

10TH ANNIVERSARY HAYLESTONE GIG @ THE SOLSTICE Peterborough's self proclaimed best covers band will be performing at The Solstice on Friday December 23. This one night only event always attracts a great crowd and you can expect loads of fun, drinks and surprises. You never know who’ll pop up at these gigs. At one of their gigs there a few years back they were joined by none other than local X Factor star Aston Merrygold when he was part of JLS and he even sang a few songs with the lads. All sorts of local celebs come out of the woodwork so watch who you’re bumping into at the bar!

friend and sometime band mate Chris Niemc. Polonium’s title follows the same story, but is much more upbeat in tone, and is the track we urge anyone to check out first.”
Asphalt Waves was recorded with Owen Turner (Magoo) at Sick Room Studio in Norfolk over three days. Check out track one You Are Doomed and track seven I Can Hear (You Calling). The band is made up of Ian Tasker (lead guitar, drum machine sampling, synth, vocals) Martin Rowe (bass, vocals, percussion) and Graeme Edgar (rhythm guitar, vocals). Ian told me they have various influences – “We’re into bands like Primal Scream, Blur, Doves, Underworld, Massive Attack and loads of older stuff. Hopefully it comes through in our songs. “The track named after the band is written for the wife of the murdered spy/diplomat. If you scan YouTube you might even see us prancing about in the woods, in a video made by Martin and our good
Bassist Martin has played in Reynolds, The 59ers and Brother That's The Blues as well as playing in several theatre pits. While Ian Tasker is a veteran of local punk/hardcore bands Cruz Ducks and Crack Babies. Graeme was in Washer, a short lived band named after the Slint song and also plays in N.A.i.M. alongside Martin. “We try to create what we call a 'woozy molten groove',” says Ian. You can decide on that for yourself when you check out the album, which you can get on Spotify, iTunes, Deezer and also the CD from their Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/ litvinenkoband/ http://www.deezer.com/album/ 14390740 If you like their material you can catch them live at their next local gig on February 4, 2017 at The Ostrich on North Street for the album launch. To contact the band email litvinenko@live.co.uk, call 07455 067576 or 07941 874747, or visit www.litvinenko.co.uk.
