FOOD FESTIVAL RETURNS We’re pleased to hear that the The South Holland Food Festival is back for the second time next month but this time with a few changes…
BROTHERHOOD RETAIL PARK HERE TO HELP There are some great new developments happening in Peterborough and it’ll be good to see the Broterhhood Retail park revived next year. We’re told it’ll be more of a higher spec shopping park than a retail park with some new stores coming to the park as well as a well known restaurant. Work starts in the autumn and should be complete a year later. In the meantime the people behind the development are keen to support the local community and are asking people to get in touch with any ways they might be able to help out. It could be anything from finding a balloon modeller or money for a DJ for your event, to helping out with a gazebo for a charity day – they’re open to enquiries! Just email brotherhood@pmwcom.co.uk or write to Brotherhood Summer Event,
SINGING IN THE RAIN FOREST We have to congratulate Peterborough band Kissmet, the world's only Bhangra Rock Fusion band, who’ve been invited to headline the Rain Forest World Music Festival in Borneo this month! The organisers of the internationally acclaimed festival approached the band because they’d heard about the vibrant and positive form of world music the Singh brothers were performing. Ron Singh, founder member of the band told ESP – "This is a fantastic opportunity for us. We've played abroad before, even going as far as to 60,000 in the heart of Mexico City, but this festival takes place in the middle of the Rain Forest. It's long been a dream of ours to visit such a beautiful part of the world and to do it whilst performing our music is just a fantasy."
Not only will this year’s Food Festival be organised by the events team within the brand new Red Lion Quarter, Spalding, the Festival also welcomes a new venue to its climax. This year’s Food Festival will be on August 12 – 14 and includes a variety of local, national and even a few unique traders spread throughout the Spalding town centre, independent market traders as well as street performances and entertainment acts. Then the festival continues within the 5 acre picturesque gardens of the award winning Grade II listed Ayscoughfee Hall Museum, with arts and crafts, creative cooking, food interaction, family entertainment, produce traders, food sampling, tipples to taste and take away, live music, games, competitions and much more. Sounds great and we’ll have more next issue.

MORE SWISHING! The Green Festival Swish event supported by ESP was a great night with around 80 ladies, including our Face of ESP girls swapping clothes and recycling their wardrobe. ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly hosted the event and gave some great advice on what to choose. It also included a pop-up vintage shop from Sue Ryder displaying some of the clothes and accessories you can get at the Vintage and Retro Shop on Bridge Street, hair styling by P.Kai and a great photo competition by Venture. If you missed that one though, or enjoyed it and fancy going to another, there’s a Swish on Wednesday July 6, this time in aid of Sue Ryder, at Club Caliente in the Parnwell Centre. Organiser Jenny Mogford told ESP – “Swishing is fun and can save you an absolute fortune on a new wardrobe, especially if you’ve recently lost weight and have nothing that seems to fit. As a bonus, you can also feel very virtuous for being so environmentally friendly.” Just take up to five items of new or nearly new clothing or accessories you’d like to swap. You can take away up to the same number of items you take along. Tickets are just a fiver which includes a glass of wine on arrival and there’s free parking. See www.charityswishing.co.uk or for advance tickets call Club Caliente on 01733 352573/343450 or email jenny@internetnow.co.uk

LAUREN IS CLOCK FACE IN JULY
NORTHEAST GOES WEST (INDIAN)
Our Face of ESP Lauren Hughes will be officially declaring the Clock Restaurant open on July 14 when owner Barry Blakesley flings open the doors to yet another al fresco dining experience as our vision for a cosmopolitanstyle city continues.
Top marks to Northeast Corner for extending their food offering and dishing up the delights of West Indian cuisine.
Not quite as cosmo is the Greggs opening next to it but we all love a bit of Greggs don’t we? Hence why we’ll have two in close proximity.
Northeast Corner is another independently run business serving up meals for anytime of the day at very reasonable prices. The Westgatelocated bar and grill has some cracking offers on at the moment – check them out on Facebook.
The Clock follows hot on the heels of Patisserie Valerie, which opened on Cathedral Square last month. But what’s even better about the new owner of the former Café Limon building is he’s an independent retailer and it’s always good to see local entrepreneurs investing in our city. Barry’s thrown more than £30k at the place and extended the kitchen to allow for a wider choice of nosh including more hot food options than previously on offer. Sandwiches and baguettes will be made to order as before but the nice touch you’ll get at the Clock is table service – there’s more seating now too. Downstairs will be transformed into a sectioned-off family room with baby changing facilities, bottle warmers and soft seating for mums (or indeed, dads). It’s going to be great to see another eatery with outside seating, perfect for a host of summer events and bistro evenings Barry has in the pipeline. Good stuff Barry, see you soon.
Never one to miss a food-tasting opportunity, I joined our Lauren for a round of patties, curried meat, fish and dumplings and other tasty treats I polished off without even asking what they were called!
A BIT GREEN WHEN IT COMES TO ALES My month of eating continued with a visit to the Fitzwilliam Arms (Green Man) in Marholm for their first cask ale festival. I’m about as interested in ale as Ryan Giggs was about being faithful to his wife but I was drawn to the event knowing I’d get a decent dinner at the same time. Manager Luke began telling me about the large selection of real ales, porter and cask cider they had, plus a vodka and gin stall blah, blah, blah. Apparently it was all very tasty and plenty of ale lovers can be seen enjoying it in our Paparazzi this month. Anyway, try their lamb shank, it’s cracking!
RIP HENRY I was saddened to hear of the death of 89 year-old Henry Jarman who died when his motorbike and sidecar collided with a car on the A47 last month. I took this photo of Henry only weeks before, when he won the prize for ‘Best Non-Harley Bike’ at the Harley’s Diner bike event in Market Deeping. Henry’s pictured with diner owner Richard Swinscoe who told us all that day how Henry was an inspiration to all bikers. Henry had been riding from the age of 14 and became a lover of motorcycles ever since. He was a member of the British Motorcyclists’ Federation and other bike clubs. Henry had a big fan club, leaving a lasting impression with everyone he met, including myself. Rest in peace Henry.
TWO WHEELS BETTER THAN FOUR A big shout to the guys at Wheels Motorcycles in Fengate who rescued my eBay ‘bargain’ Vespa from running like it was being choked to death (my poor baby). She needed a service and a bit of tweaking and I was back on my way. Yes I know it rains a lot but there’s no denying scooters are a fantastic way to travel for fuel economy with most of them capable of up to 100 mpg. Road tax is a wallet-pleasing £16 per year for any bike up to 150cc or only £35 from 151cc to 400cc. Best of all you can park practically anywhere and there’s no charge! Wheels have a nice range of scooters and offer free CBT training on every scooter purchased. They also do a clothing start-up pack (jacket, helmet, gloves and lock) for only £150.

JOE WAS SMOKIN’ NOW TIME FOR SUGAR It was great to meet boxing legend ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier at the Orton Hall Hotel a couple of months ago and a big thanks to Kevin Sanders for making it happen. This time it’s the turn of the great Sugar Ray Leonard to delight city boxing fans when he appears at Liquid Nightclub on Wednesday July 13. Tickets are £75 and you’ll get a threecourse meal and entertainment plus a chance to get a photo with the great man. Leonard was a textbook fighter and arguably the best middleweight of all time. He fought in an era with other great middleweights including Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns – and beat them all. Call 01733 311549 for tickets.
DENMARK ARE PIONEERS
Wipes are for girls
I recently read that Denmark banned the sale of Marmite because its added vitamins and minerals break the country's food safety laws. I’ve always wondered what the point of Denmark was and now I know. Thank you Denmark for paving the way to destroying this vile, tarmac-based spread.
Fellas Wipes – fellaswipes.com – is a ‘new male grooming product essential for men that like to be prepared for every eventuality’. Waste of money, we’ll still use the Travelodge curtains.
Incompetence MY WORD OF THE MONTH
I’ve never known such incompetence lately: E.ON, Swinton, spotty teenagers, mechanics, service departments, waitresses, key cutters, call centre staff, retail managers, casserole dishes, gas lighters, eBay sellers and men under the thumb.

CALVES DESTROYED FOR LOADSA CHARITY CASH It was supposed to be a ‘relaxing cycle ride on dedicated cycle routes’ so I was told. But the boys from Man About Town sponsors Balderston, ended up taking us on a trek across cow fields, nature trails, hills, quick sand, poppy fields, railway lines, forests and hills (I’ve already said hills but there were a lot of them!) Despite not being able to walk for two days afterwards, I’d do it all again. It was ‘fun’ and all for a good cause, to raise money for Prostate Cancer Charity – and that we did – the guys were still counting the cash as I was writing this story on deadline. I, and a dozen other cyclists, peddled across Peterborough for some 20 miles and it was a fab feeling. I met a great bunch of people too. Well done guys. What’s the next challenge?!

Beach Bodies We may not all look as good as Kelly Brook in her gorgeous New Look bikini but whatever your figure you can make the most of it by wearing the right swimwear. ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly has our guide to making the most of your beach body look… • Boyish figures look great in halter necks – they widen shoulders and make your bust look larger. If you’re long bodied try a tankini, as it’ll feel more comfortable. Beware of triangle tops, as they can flatten your breasts if not padded. Bandeau tops, in a textured or detailed fabric, can flatter and add inches. Boy shorts only work if you have long legs. • If you’re hourglass or curvy, keep it simple. Block colours look best and always opt for underwired tops. A belted one-piece looks great if you have a tiny waist. A sarong, a large hat and huge sunspecs will give you film star appeal. Avoid a kaftan as it’ll hide your curves. • If you’re a little top-heavy avoid halter or high necklines as they’ll accentuate your bust. Tops should have support under the bust but a keyhole top can be surprisingly effective. Tie a sarong no higher than your waist. • If you’re worried about your tummy a one-piece swimsuit is the best bet. Ruching disguises excess flesh in the folds of the fabric while patterns and a medium-high-cut leg will lengthen legs and detract attention away from your middle. • If your hips are larger than your shoulders, or you have saddlebags and a smallish bust, opt for a twopiece rather than a swimsuit. Smaller bikini bottoms will elongate legs and those with a V-cut waistband also work. Wear dark colours on your bottom half, bright or light colours on top. Halter necks and ruched tops will create a more balanced bustline. If it’s just got to be a one-piece go for high-cut legs or try a tankini. • Too large a pattern on a petite frame can swamp and too small on a large frame can add pounds. Black can be slimming, but if you’re naturally fair try brown or blue instead. • Size and fit are critical. Never purchase swimwear if you have to keep adjusting the legs or it’s too short in the body. Persevere until you find the right one and then buy it in bulk. It’ll pay you back in spades! • Shoes with a wedge or thick sole, coupled with a V frontage such as a flip-flop, will lengthen the legs. Sliders, or any sandal with a horizontal bar, will shorten.

Take inspiration from the Trashion Show and try ‘upcycling’ old clothes at home to create great new outfits!
If you’re into high-end fashion go for green options like Good One and Junkie Styling. Good One make garments from off-cuts of fabric left over from making mass-produced clothes and Junkie Styling upstyle old garments like suits into great new pieces (our ESP model Perry wore clothes made of old suits at the Trashion Show)

How to make your wardrobe ‘green’…
Get inspiration from Peterborough’s prisoners, whose innovative clothes and accessories created from waste products like pencil sharpenings and bubble wrap, were on show at the Trashion Show. If you missed the Trashion Show visit City College Peterborough, who are exhibiting their fantastic recycled fashion creations.
As part of Peterborough Environment City Trust’s recent Green Festival, the City College, Blok Collective and ESP Magazine staged a Trashion Show in Queensgate to demonstrate just how one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Face of ESP Lauren Hughes and two previous winners Claire Smith and Becca Evans along with ESP model Perry Moore joined students on the catwalk in a range of eco, recycled and second hand fashions. P.Kai hair came up with some great styles and the ESP Dance Crew entertained. Compered by ESP’s Sarah Tempest the aim of the Trashion Show was to educate and excite people about reusing materials, buying eco and adapting old clothing into new fashionable items. If you missed the show here are some top tips to help green up your wardrobe…
You don’t need to buy new to look great – Sue Ryder’s Vintage and Retro store on Bridge Street has some fantastic second hand garments ranging from high street retro to authentic vintage.

Support Lush’s commitment to environmentally friendly cosmetics by buying their fresh natural products and choosing their greenest packaging option – the vintage scarf knot wrap: see www.lush.co.uk for more info.
Opt for ethical and/or environmental fashion options wherever you can. Many high street stores now have a great range of fair trade and organic clothing. London Fashion House Howies (seen at the Trashion Show) offer a high-end organic clothing range.
Make yourself some cash and sell clothes you don’t wear on eBay.
If you love your make-up but worry about all the nasty chemicals it can have in it, give Arbonne cosmetics a try. These chemical-free plant-based products are good for your skin as well as the environment. Contact local rep Katherine Horner for more information.
Check out the new course prospectus on City College Peterborough’s website for information on upcoming fashion and upstyling courses www.citycollegepeterborough.ac.uk. Courses are often in the evening so are a great way of gaining new eco-fashion skills and meeting new people.

Fancy being our next celeb?
OK girls, are you ready to step out and make your mark on the world? Fancy bagging yourself some fantastic prizes and becoming a ‘face’ about town? It’s time to take the plunge and enter this year’s Face of ESP. It’s not a beauty contest, we’re looking for a girl who looks after herself but who also has personality and that magic something. We want someone to represent ESP Magazine for a year promoting all that we have to offer and have a fantastic time while doing it. The current Face of ESP Lauren Hughes is a great example of how an ordinary girl has been transformed by the competition. Local student one day – local celebrity the next! Lauren says she’s been loving it so far – “My year’s been fantastic with so many opportunities to do things I’d never have dreamed of doing before, from playing ice hockey with the Mayor, putting the Christmas lights on and the star on the Christmas tree. I’ve also been involved with local charity events which has been incredible… not forgetting all the fabulous shopping I’ve been doing so far! “I feel since winning the Face of ESP I’ve become more confident in myself. It’s enabled me to come out of my comfort zone and engage with people who I never thought I’d be interacting with. “Being the Face of ESP means so much as I’ve grown as a person and I feel that it’s been such an important role as it enables me to be an ambassador for local companies as well as the magazine.”

Floyd @ The Stamford Corn Ex
Think Floyd, dubbed 'the definitive Pink Floyd experience', are playing the Stamford Corn Exchange on July 30. Lewis Hall and the lads have been touring now for nearly 15 years in theatres and venues around the UK. Think Floyd have built up the reputation of being the UK's number one Pink Floyd tribute band and fans travel to see them play again and again. Their new show features the whole range of classic Pink Floyd from Barrett, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, The Division Bell and a complete performance of the iconic album Dark Side Of The Moon. It’ll be great to see them again in town and after playing the Corn Ex myself last month I have to say it really is a fantastic little theatre. If you haven’t visited yet then this is a great gig to start with.
Leonard Cohen Tribute @ Arts Centre Leonard Cohen can be described as one of the most accomplished singersongwriters of our time but started out as a poet and novelist in Montreal. Over 2,000 renditions of Cohen's songs have been recorded over the years and now Keith James is touring the country with his own tribute to the artist. Keith says –“I’m endeavouring to pare each song back to its central core and original sense of purpose by performing each song as near to the way it was originally written, exposing Cohen’s unprecedented sense of humanity.” Keith has recently completed a successful national tour (The Great Canadian Song Book) celebrating the pinnacle of Canadian song writers and has since taken a deeper interest in Cohen’s work specifically. The upcoming tour’s become the largest tour of its kind spanning the UK with 63 dates. See him at Stamford Arts Centre on July 8 at 8pm, for more info visit www.keith-james.com

Summer’S Looking Hot @ mama’S There’s a lot going on at Mama Liz’s and the Voodoo Lounge over the summer months. New to Mama’s is DJ Justin Green aka ‘Green Goblin’ who’ll be playing his funk, disco and boogie with new releases that form his distinctive 'funk show' sound. He’ll be DJ-ing on a monthly basis now with the next show on Friday July 1. Justin also presents his own Green Goblins mix show on Soundcloud and Mixcloud internet pages with many big-hitters appreciating his style. The radio show is listened to worldwide, Justin says – “The Mama Liz's shows are broadcast live, which is becoming more rare, nowadays... Always live, always thumping!” And Magic Pudding Avenue are carrying on their great nights with one on July 22 featuring music from Sennen, The Beautiful Sleazy and Empire. On the live music side, Saturday August 6 sees the return of the great Mark Morris (another Brit Pop hero!) from The Bluetones, on the eve of The Bluetones’ final tour!
Step Into The Lyric Lounge A day long feast of words featuring international artists and poets is coming to Stamford. Lyric Lounge Lincolnshire is making the first of its three stops in the county in Stamford on Saturday July 23. A spectacular temporary performance space will be created in the Voodoo Lounge downstairs at Mama Liz’s in North Street and writers and performers of all ages are welcome to go along, listen in, get writing and maybe even start performing alongside renowned spoken word artists Hannah Jane Walker, Adisa and Byron Vincent. The day kicks off at noon with a workshop with poet and performer Hannah Jane Walker, whose solo show was a hit at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe. She’s appearing in Stamford fresh from the Latitude festival and before she heads back to Edinburgh. At 1pm local band Centre Excuse will entertain with their unique blend of electro, pop and punk. Wizard of words Adisa, who claims he was born with a silver tongue and a head full of words, is leading a workshop at 3pm where those taking part will be encouraged to write something to perform at the Lyrical Teatime open mic session at 4pm. The evening performance, which will be the culmination of weeks of work by the youth theatre group, starts at 7.15pm. Tickets for the Stamford event are available from www.wegotickets.com. What’s more, at only 46p for 25 wipes, they get a big yes from me! Au Naturale is the way forward High street health experts Holland & Barrett recently carried out a UK-wide survey revealing that British women prefer the natural look with almost half saying they regularly ditch their make up. According to the study women like to go ‘au naturale’ mainly to show off the quality of their skin. Despite healthy skin being top of their agenda many are still unaware of the unnatural chemicals contained within the products they use as part of their daily skincare regime and the harsh effects they could have on their skin. In fact, only one in ten of the women asked use products free from harsh chemicals such as parabens and sodium laurel sulphate (SLS). Holland & Barrett’s Group Director of Marketing, Phil Geary believes that millions of people are being – “tripped up by using products which are the beauty equivalent of junk food.”
YSL Mascara Singulier Nuit Blanche – girls you’ve all heard of glamping right?! Just because you’re camping does not mean you have to ditch the glamour. This YSL mascara, £22, is not only luxurious but is waterproof – ideal if it rains, there’s a heat wave, you cry etc. Definitely worth the money! Tesco Soleil Suncare – sunburn is the ultimate beauty faux-pas so stock up on Tesco’s sensitive sun lotion in SPF 50 which comes in a handy 75ml tube; perfect to pop in your handbag no matter how small, as well as offering high protection. Carex Hand Gel Aloe Vera – dreading the dodgy chemical loos and scummy showers already? Then fear not as this hand sanitizer kills 99.9 per cent of bacteria, giving you clean hands without the need for water – perfect hand hygiene on the go.
According to Phil there’s also “emerging evidence that chemicals such as parabens could have a harmful effect on health, yet they are found in the majority of high street beauty products. Holland & Barrett is the only retailer to have banned products containing parabens and SLS, and is committed to providing true natural beauty products”. Exclusively available in Holland & Barrett stores nationwide, Dr Organic is the first natural, organic, paraben and SLS-free beauty product range.

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS! Well girls, you did it – in style – and we hope you’ve all dried out! Now it’s time to make sure you get that vital sponsorship money in. Our Face of ESP Lauren Hughes was among 3,000 ladies who took part in this year’s Tesco and Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life at its new location, the Embankment in Peterborough. Lauren told ESP – “There was such an amazing atmosphere and the turn-out was fantastic. It was my first time running in the Race For Life and I shall definitely be participating again next year. I was surprised to have run it in 33 minutes – my personal trainer must be doing something well!” Kev and Ros from Heart FM were there to warm up the crowds and the ESP promo team were there giving out goody bags and cheering on the girls. Despite the rain it was still a brilliant day and there was a real sense of achievement among many of those walking, jogging and running in memory of loved ones who’ve suffered from cancer.
Hayley Gunn-Bruce, event manager for Peterborough told ESP – “We’re so very grateful to everyone who took part or supported our participants, as well as the wonderful volunteers who helped make the event happen. “Now the big day is over, we’re asking our supporters to take one last step – by returning the money they’ve raised so that we can go on funding much needed research.” Just go to www.raceforlife.org for payment details or call 0871 641 1111.

Peterborough FM
IS BACK ON AIR
Lately, it seems everybody’s been talking about Peterborough FM as it goes live on air once again. Word is, it’s far from your typical radio station. ESP’s Mikey Clarke went to find out why…
30
www.espmag.co.uk
Whilst taking full advantage of the refreshments kindly put on offer, I caught up with Daniele Fisichella, who’s the community involvement officer at the station which started out in 2007. The station’s now in the midst of its latest Restricted Service Licence (RSL) broadcast which means it’s live on air for a limited time. He explained – “Peterborough FM is a not-for-profit community radio station for the Greater Peterborough area. We have so many passionate presenters from all different communities, and they all get the chance to get their voice heard.”
for local organisations. Workshops and training sessions are run, allowing local organisations to make better use of the media and new technology to get their messages across.” The project’s funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the BBC Children In Need Appeal and other funders and eventually hopes to win a licence to broadcast live full time. I was invited to chat on air about ESP as a guest on Peterborough FM’s Vivienne Lee Show – described as ‘a cross between Oprah Winfrey on air and Desert Island Discs’. I could
“A wide range of Peterborough’s diverse communities are all under one roof here...” This was perhaps what I was most impressed with during my visit to the station based in Norfolk Street. All the presenters did indeed clearly have their voices heard. Each person I spoke to described how they were able to discuss on air subjects they felt strongly about, and they were also able to play the songs that they felt suited their own show.
really sense a friendly and supportive atmosphere in and around the studio and had a great time chatting with Vivienne.
Daniele continued – “Peterborough FM provides skills development and volunteering opportunities for all in a very flexible programme including presenting skills, interview and recording techniques, driving the studio desk. As a community radio station Peterborough FM also provides media support

paparazzi Caught in the act? There’s so much going on in the Boro lately it’s hard to know where to send the Paparazzi guys out to next! There have been some fantastic events held lately which ESP has been pleased to support, including the city’s Green Festival. Our photographer Emma Bothamley was out an about capturing all the action at the twentieth event. Pep Cipriano was back behind the lens and despite not being a real ale fan he still managed to have a great time over at the Fitzwilliam Arms – better known locally as the Green Man – at Marholm. Their first cask ale celebration proved a real success despite the odd rain shower. Then Mike Harris went bankside to capture the action at this year’s thirteenth Dragon Boat Festival on the River Nene, which although unlucky for some, proved a successful day for the 2011 Champions – the Radical Racers from Radical Motorsport.

ESP
CELEBS
Nicola Roberts Nicola Roberts is the latest Girls Aloud member to start flying solo. ESP’s Susan Saunders interviewed the girl following the beat of her own drum…
When I spoke with Nicola the other girls hadn’t yet heard her new material because, as she explained- “I wanted everything to be finished and mixed before I played it to the girls,” but a gathering at Kimberley’s house to play the music was on the cards. Cue a little hint of ‘ohhhh, I want to go hang out with the girls too’…and then I was back in the room!
Is it still cool to love Girls Aloud and the members of? If it isn’t then I’m officially the most uncool person on this planet because I still love them – it’s official! Very happy, I was then, to get an interview with the often understated, but sometimes feisty member of the band, Nicola Roberts, to learn more about her new venture as a solo artist!
“They’re all really excited for me and they’re like: ‘I can’t believe we haven’t heard anything yet!’” Nicola told me. ”It might be quite an emotional evening. The girls are really happy for me.”
As part of Girls Aloud, Nicola’s already enjoyed incredible chart success and sold more than three million albums in the UK alone. Since then, Nicola’s launched her own make-up line (Dainty Doll), backed and presented a TV campaign about the dangers of sun beds and tanning and has now recorded her new album, Cinderella’s Eyes! I caught up with Nicola for a good girly chat about hanging out with the girls, pets and of course about her solo single Beat Of My Drum which is out on CD on July 18. “I’m really excited about my new material,” Nicola enthused to me. “Obviously, when you’re recording and you’ve been in the studio for so long, you settle into that way of life. You get comfortable with the whole ‘get up, go to the studio early, record your songs and finish late’ routine, that somehow the date when you have to release it to the world comes round almost out of nowhere. It’s exciting but I’m a bit nervous about it too!” I agree that it must be nerve-wracking for Nicola as ‘going solo’ is very different to being part of one of the most successful British girl bands of the decade. “I am really nervous about branching out on my own,” she confessed, “because there’s so much that’s different. At the video shoot for my new single I said that I was nervous and felt like I had two left feet. Everyone was saying to me ‘it’s like riding a bike’ and I thought – the next person to say ‘it’s like riding a bike’ to me is going to get it between the eyes! It’s not like riding a bike at all and the music is so different to when I was with the girls. When you’re used to performing with four other girls but you haven’t performed on stage for almost two years, it’s quite scary. I felt like I was dropped off the side of a cliff!”
And were they being supportive, unlike the rumoured ‘non-support’ of Nadine I wondered?
And so, what I really wanted to know was, were Girls Aloud getting back together? “Yes we are…” (I think that’s what you call an exclusive ladies and gentleman)! “Probably next year. I look forward to it. It’s our tenth year anniversary next year so by hook or by crook, I will get everyone together!” Hurrah! I asked Nicola how long she’d been songwriting for because when I first heard the ‘Nicola’s going to be a soloist’ news, it came as a pleasant surprise. “Well, we did our last Girls Aloud gig in September 2009 and after that I was heavily involved in Dainty Doll but in my spare time I was in the studio writing. I would say I’ve been songwriting a good year and working on my album material.” The album Cinderella’s Eyes, on which she cowrote all of the tracks, is due for release in the autumn and should be preceded by her second single. The album is a very personal one charting things that have happened in her life but she also says it has a very ‘British’ sound. When Nicola gets a sec to herself, she revealed she’s much like the rest of us and lounges in front of her TV, catching up on recorded shows that have mounted up. Oh and did I mention Nicola has the two pups that I’d really like? Ronnie and Reggie two fawn coloured pugs who are, as Nicola describes – “like my babies”. Now, being a chatterbox myself, it’s easy to spot another and after glancing at my watch, I realised we’d been blissfully chatting away for a good half an hour! After calling ‘time’ on the interview, I thought to myself ‘what a very lovely and genuine girl’, which, let’s face it, isn’t true of all celebrities. Good luck with your new career Nicola – we salute you! www.nicolarobertsmusic.com

TIME FOR LAUREN TO LAUNCH THE CLOCK It’s great to see so many new places to eat opening in the city centre and café culture really taking off. Our Face of ESP Lauren Hughes will do the honours and open the Clock restaurant on Bridge Street on July 14 at 10am as the former Limon building is finally brought back to life. Expect everything from coffees/lattes to wine/beer and paninis and sandwiches through to hot/cold food made to order. There’s an outside seating area for Al Fresco dining and the Clock’s available for hire for private functions. It’s open seven days a week from 8am. Named after the old library clock which hangs above its entrance near the Town Hall this new eaterie promises to be family friendly and offers children’s lunch for just £3.95. So once Lauren’s cut the ribbon, drop in and give it a try. Keep an eye out for their special offers and the new parent’s section downstairs. www.theclockrestaurant.co.uk
OVER TO THE YOUNG GUNS @ JIM’S BISTRO! Jim’s Bistro on Broadway is bristling with new energy since chef and patron James Trevor decided to step back and give youth its chance. After running the front of house at this highly successful restaurant for over a year now, Lauren, Jim’s daughter has taken over the reins. Along with head chef John Needham, who’s been running the kitchen for two years under Jim’s close guidance, they’ve taken full control of day to day running, with Jim giving consultancy and guidance at arms length. So far there’s been the introduction of a new menu which is far less formal and puts the emphasis on casual dining, from light bites through to some of the classic dishes that the Bistro is renowned for. Lauren explains – “The reason for this more laid-back approach is to make our customers realise that this is not just a place for special occasions, but somewhere you can pop in for a snack at lunchtime or enjoy the full dining experience late into the evening.”

HEALTHY
EATING with Karen Devine
Kalamata Olives – from a region in Greece known for producing the famous Kalamata olives and olive oils. Aubergine in colour they are said to be much sweeter than other olives. Olives and olive oil have been shown to help prevent cardiovascular disease, reduce inflammation and help with joint health. Olives can offer a good picky start to a meal in place of the heavier breads. Ideally watch for olives in brine as they do bring higher levels of sodium (rinse them through to help reduce the sodium). Greek Salads – full of local sun-ripened tomatoes, olives, onions, a sprinkling of feta cheese, cucumber and olive oil are the main ingredients, this should be added to your meze to bring a bit of raw food into your diet. There are many meze type dishes including fish, meat and vegetarian – what a great way to enjoy many Greek foods. Having several meze type dishes helps you to slow down, imagine sitting in a nice taverna on a Greek island overlooking the sea, with great company and taking time to let all your senses take in the view, the smell, the taste etc. Don’t you just wish you were there right now! Happy holidays, enjoy the sunshine and topping up your vitamin D.
ESP’s resident nutritionist has been taking a virtual trip around the world seeking out the best in the diets of various nationalities. This month Karen’s heading for Greece… As it’s holiday season I wanted to return to all things Mediterranean and go Greek this month. Greek foods do have some similarities to other Med countries such as the higher intake of healthy foods including olive oils, tomatoes, herbs and fresh fish. They also have some very famous meat dishes such as moussaka as they tend to eat quite a bit of lamb (and sometimes goat). One of the main features of Greek food is the popular meze; several small dishes or appetizers which you find typically in restaurants and local tavernas.
Karen For more information on health and nutrition go to www.karendevine.co.uk or www.devinedetox.co.uk.
SWAPS
As with all world cuisines there are foods that ideally should only be eaten in moderation due to the deep frying or the addition of other fats, sugars etc but there are still many good healthy meze dishes you can choose which are not only tasty but can bring a host of nutrients such as: Hummus dip – the scrummy mix of olive oil, chickpeas (or garbanzo beans as they are also known) and tahini. Paste (from sesame seeds), garlic and lemon juice make this a dish very high in magnesium, molybdenum, folic acid, fibre, protein, B vits, zinc and much more. Typically served with hot pitta bread but if you want to go extra healthy ask for chopped veg instead. (If you have a history of gout or kidney stones then this may not be a good dish for you). Tzatziki – a dish which is very cooling and generally accompanies a spicy meat dish, made with natural Greek yoghurt, cucumber, heaps of infection-fighting garlic and mint this can be a healthy dish if the yoghurt is a ‘live’ yoghurt it will contain beneficial bacteria (helpful for digestion, immunity and more). Dolmades – a dish made from grapevine leaves and stuffed with rice, onions, garlic and if meat is added it would generally be minced lamb. The vine leaves bring a host of nutrients from iron, Vitamins E, K and A, folic acid, magnesium and calcium to name a few.
Use chopped veg with hummus in place of pitta to boost nutrient levels.

Dreams
Harri with David Proud at Spencer’s Ball At just 18 years-old Peterborough model Harriadnie Beau Phipps has been mingling with the stars since winning the title of the Face of Pia Michi in London for a year. She beat 300 entrants in the competition and now has her own dress collection named after her as seen in these fabulous pictures! The exclusive evening/couture dress designer Pia Michi designs and manufactures dresses and distributes for exclusive labels of new designers in the UK. A spokesman for Pia Michi told ESP – “Harri was chosen as a fresh new model for Pia Michi because she is the most photogenic model in our opinion.” Of course we agree as Harradine’s modeled for ESP on several occasions already! A special party was recently held to launch her collection in London, hosted by Lizzy Cundy with several celebs including Michelle Heaton, Amy Childs, David Van Day and many more. The event was also covered by OK! TV and OK! Magazine.

Harriadnie’s now considered to be one of the newest unsigned couture models and is overjoyed – “It’s still not really sunk in! When I went to the party I was really nervous as it was the first time I’d done anything like that. I was sat in the hairdressers beforehand with Micha Barton – she was amazingly nice. It was all such a fantastic experience. “This is such a great opportunity for me. I’m hoping to work with more top designers in future and become a haute couture model.” Harriadnie now regularly works with the famous HMH Couture a designer to the stars including Cheryl Cole, Sophie Anderton, Elle Macpherson and many more. It’s all taking off and her recent work’s included the Saatchi Gallery London, the Berkeley Dress Show and the Evergreen Fashion Show Chigwell with some of the cast of The Only Way Is Essex! Clearly she’s on the way up as to add to her success Harri is now also The Face of The Sugar Hut, the top Essex club that appeared throughout the series of The Only Way Is Essex, beating over 1000 girls! So, it looks like we could be seeing a lot more of her – but hopefully still within the pages of ESP! Check out the full Harriadnie couture collection at www.piamichi.com.

Wow, doesn’t she look every bit the Bond girl? It’s a real dream come true as Peterborough girl Harriadnie starts her year as a couture model…

PERCEPTIVE WHAT’S IN A NAME? Is anyone else bored stupid with the whole Cheryl Cole saga? Yes I feel sorry for her losing her job, yes I can understand the yes humiliation of it not working out after the whole fanfare and sick I’d love to know the real gossip of the inside story but I am es to the back teeth of the latest ‘Cheryl: I need a break’ headlin appearing in the papers every single day.
TALKING DIRTY Picture the scene, it’s a lovely sunny day, the city centre’s buzzing and as you walk across from Queensgate towards Starbucks you spot the man of your dreams, just stood there in the middle of Cathedral Square. You draw breath and summon up the courage to go over and make a move but what chat up line to use? Would you take the cheesy route – ‘You make me want to rearrange the alphabet cos U and I belong together’? The cheeky route – ‘Those jeans look good on you but they’d look better on my carpet’ or would you just go for the direct – ‘Fancy a drink sometime?’ approach? Whatever option you decide, I’m prepared to bet that the one you definitely wouldn’t plump for is – ‘Ooh, you smell!’ But don’t knock it because that’s exactly the line one Peterborough lass used when she spotted the object of her desire in Cathedral Square and guess what? It worked! OK so they ended up on the Jeremy Kyle show (yeah yeah, I know but it’s a guilty pleasure of mine) but I suppose it’s one sure fire way of getting a man back to your place and naked, even if it is only to get him in the bath for a good scrub!
Call me cynical but I won’t be shocked if she magically appears at the 11th hour to ‘save’ the UK X-Factor. She’s not been seen publicly since she came back to the UK, she’s not on to speculation about her rekindling her making formal statements so now the headlines have moved Ashley Cole. If the latest headlines are to be hers, of and ex-husb relationship with that dirty dog of a cheating home with Ashley and he has high hopes of her believed then she’s been spending time back at the marital n they used to share. Hurtmore House? The mansio Surrey m moving back to Hurtmore House, the 12 bedroo clue’s in the name Chezza, don’t do it!
GAVIN A LAUGH Following on from his stints on Strictly Come Dancing and 71 Degrees North, orange sometimes rugby player Gavin Henson has signed up for another reality TV show, The Bachelor on Channel 5. All well and good but I can’t help thinking that it’s a bit of a pointless exercise because no matter how many ‘I want to show the public the real me’ profile raising ‘I’m more than just a perma-tanned show pony’ shows he goes on, he’ll never be known for anything more than being the former Mr Charlotte Church.
SLAGGED OFF Jenny Thompson, the ‘high class’ hooker who reportedly slept with Wayne Rooney when his wife was pregnant with their baby boy has sold her story saying that she attempted suicide because of all the abuse she received since the story became public. Firstly, I’d like to know what exactly makes one prostitute more high class than another, does she insist on dinner before putting out or does she perhaps use gold plated condoms? Surely, no matter what your class, you’re still doing the same job?! Or jobs, so to speak. Anyway, talking about how awful life has been and how she’s targeted when she goes out (to high profile clubs, restaurants and events where footballers tend to frequent), Jenny told the News Of The World – “I can honestly say now that I wish I’d never slept with Wayne Rooney”. Funny that love, I bet his wife thinks the same.
DIY FYI
B & Q have launched classes on how to put together flat pack furniture after a survey revealed that around 30 per cent of us ignore assembly instructions and around 10 per cent never finish the job at all. Sounds like a pretty good idea to me and a damned site cheaper than a divorce lawyer, which is what I nearly end up with every time me and him buy anything from Ikea. It’s not so much that he’s rubbish with a screw driver (I will resist the urge to make any obvious jokes about screwing) more that he struggles to decipher the rubbish illustrations on the instructions. I think £10 is a very small price to pay to avoid hours in Relate and a huge argument when I point out that the wardrobe doors are meant to close, and that them overlapping is not a design feature. Thanks B&Q!
RACE TO PAY I’ve long been a supporter of Cancer Research UK’s Race For Life and I can’t believe it but this summer I reach my milestone of my tenth year as an RFL presenter/commentator. I’ve just done the Enfield one, check out the pic of me interviewing Phoebe Thomas, who played Maria in Holby City. Phoebe is a Race For Life ambassador and is the most phenomenal runner. Having met her at events before I had some insider knowledge and had a bit of a bet that, once again, she’d be first round the course – and of course, both she and I won, all proceeds to Cancer Research UK of course! And speaking of proceeds, huge well done to everyone who completed the Stamford and Peterborough events (regardless of how long it took you) but please don’t forget to send in your sponsor money. CR-UK relies on every penny and one in three ladies will not bother to send it in. Please don’t be one of them.

HEARING PROTECTION – SUZI PERRY Suzi Perry may be the face of MotoGP on the TV – but she’s more worried about her ears.
STAY ALERT FOR MOTORCYLISTS
She’s warning Peterborough bikers that a love of motorcycling can lead to long term damage to their hearing, and urged them to have regular hearing tests and use custom-made hearing protection.
Peterborough drivers are being urged to take more time to look out for motorbikes this summer.
“It’s quite simple really… hearing loss when you regularly ride your bike is gradual, so you either protect your hearing now or, like me, pay the consequences with hearing loss later on,” explained Suzi.
"With the arrival of summer we have seen an increase in the number of motorcycles on our roads. This means drivers need to take longer to look for bikes, particularly at junctions and roundabouts and in traffic jams.” There’s also a message to motorcyclists themselves to brush up on their riding and road awareness skills by attending a BikeSafe course. The course is delivered by police advanced motorcyclists and covers what makes a good rider, motorcycle control, cornering, positioning, overtaking and group riding. At the end of the course there is an opportunity to undertake an assessed ride, under the guidance of a police motorcyclist, to put into practice new-found skills. Motorcyclists interested in attending BikeSafe can find Mark Shaw details on www.bikesafe.co.uk
“Regardless of wearing a helmet, your hearing can still be damaged by the wind and engine noise, so I’m urging all bikers to get their hearing checked now, and buy some protection. It’s just as important as your leathers or boots.” For more info on free hearing tests, instant fit and custom hearing protection, please visit www.specsavers.co.uk/hearing to locate your nearest store, or call 0808 143 1143. Mark Shaw
It’s part of a campaign to tackle the high number of motorcyclists hurt and killed in road accidents. Clair George, road safety officer for the SaferPeterborough partnership told ESP – "In 2010 motorcyclists represented approximately two per cent of overall traffic flow in Peterborough, but 23 per cent of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

Let’s get this party started!
The Posh promotion party has been a good one and now after this triumphant open top parade through the city – even the rain couldn’t ruin our parade – it’s time to get down to business.
Peterborough United will open the new 2011-2012 campaign with a home fixture against Crystal Palace at London Road on Saturday August 6 with a visit to newly relegated Blackpool on Sunday August 14. Darren Ferguson’s men will have to wait until February before entertaining West Ham United, but Birmingham will be the first visitors to London Road in 2012, appearing at London Road on Monday January 2. Posh are away on Boxing Day and on New Year’s Eve and end the campaign away at Derby County, ironic that the season should end at Pride Park – it was the venue where Posh opened their last season at this level. In the Carling Cup, Posh travel to League One new boys Stevenage Borough in the first week of the season and there’s good news on the FA Cup front – Posh have a bye through to the third round now they’re a Championship club. In terms of player recruitment, the month of June was a quiet one, but arrivals and departures are expected at London Road, so to keep up with all the happenings at the Posh visit the club’s official website at www.theposh.com. LAUREN LEAPS IN FOR LIDO’S 75th ANNIVERSARY We do promise a range of experiences for our Face of ESP and sometimes you’ve just got to take the plunge! There was no backing out for Lauren Hughes as she was politely encouraged to launch the new swimming season at the Lido! Can you believe it’s 75 years old and one of only 29 still open to the public across the country? This fabulous Art Deco building was originally opened way back in 1936 and generations of Peterborians have been soaking up the sun (well sometimes!) ever since. The school holidays were never complete unless you spent a few days down at the Lido! On July 2 the City of Peterborough Swimming Club (COPS) will be celebrating its 75th anniversary too as it was founded when the Lido opened and has organised a special gala day.
Photos: Emma Bothamley
COPS are organising the anniversary event to be a repeat of the first opening gala, inviting schools to enter relay teams as well as inviting old COPS members back to race against the current squads and play water polo matches. If you fancy getting involved either by entering a school team or as an old COPS member, contact Ruth Bailey at 75anniversary@copsclub.co.uk. The Lido’s open from 9am-6pm every day until Monday July 18 when it then stays open until 8pm, Sundays it’s open from 7.30am for early morning swimmers. The season ends in September. It has a 50 yard main pool, a teaching pool and paddling pool that all the family can access for a great day out. There’s a grass area with play equipment for youngsters and it’s a great area to have a picnic when the weather’s good so when the sun shines make the most of it folks!
TOUR SERIES WOWS THE CROWDS Did you catch the Halfords Tour Series cycling in Peterborough? What a night. Even if you’re not a cycling fan this is still a real sight to see as the cyclists race around the city’s streets and through Cathedral Square. Photos: Chris Brudenell
There was a great atmosphere as the music pounded and the crowds thumped the railings in support of the race teams. Then of course Peterborough was on the telly as the race was screened on ITV4.

It was the first year a women’s race was included and it’s hoped the tour will include Peterborough once again next year.

Gavin Miller
gavin.miller@espmag.co.uk Movie Preview
Lightning strikes twice for those animation geniuses at Pixar – as Disney’s Cars gets the sequel treatment. Released: July 22 Cast: Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine. Directors: John Lasseter and Brad Lewis.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Released: July 29. Cast: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.
Director: Joe Johnston.
Owen Wilson is back as Lightning McQueen, this time heading overseas to compete in the World Grand Prix – with goofy rust-bitten pick-up truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) by his side. But reaching the championship starting line proves to be a rocky road loaded with potholes and detours – especially when Mater gets caught up in international espionage. This leaves Mater torn between assisting Lightning in the high-profile race or towing the line in a top-secret mission orchestrated by Michael Caine’s British super spy Finn McMissile, and his sexy sidekick Holly Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer). Disney/Pixar are undoubtedly aware the Cars franchise is more squarely aimed at the younger demographic (particularly in terms of merchandising) than some of its more acclaimed adultorientated outings such as Ratatouille. But they’re the best at what they do – so still expect this to take the chequered flag and this summer’s animation crown. And that’s despite some so-so reviews Stateside.
HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART TWO Released: July 15. Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint.
With Iron Man, Thor and Hulk getting big screen time in preparation for next year’s Marvel blockbuster The Avengers – it was only a matter of time before Cap Am got in on the action.
Director: David Yates.
Chris Evans turns from firestarter – after starring in the now-canned Fantastic Four franchise as the Human Torch – to the US’s most-iconic superhero, as he takes on Red Skull (Matrix’s Hugo Weaving) and his evil HYDRA organisation in this World War II backdrop.
After ten years, eight movies and more than $6 billion in worldwide box-office receipts so far, JK Rowling’s wizarding world of Harry Potter finally comes to an end.
You’ll see characters from Captain America lore – such as ‘Bucky’ Barnes, Peggy Carter and Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) – as well as a young Howard Stark (Brit actor Dominic Cooper playing Iron Man’s dad), who helps turn Steve Rogers into the legendary shield-slinging super soldier. Fingers-crossed the ‘Star-spangled Avenger’ gets the movie he deserves after the Green Lantern did not.

As a new franchise begins, one of movie world’s biggest-ever ends.
The series has been one of the most-lauded in cinematic history, so hopefully Daniel Radcliffe’s Potter – with faithful sidekicks Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) in support – will go out with a bang (quite literally, does he sacrifice himself?) with the highly-anticipated climactic confrontation with Ralph Fiennes’ Lord Voldemort finally upon us. No-one is safe as good and evil forces collide in this mouth-watering finale that also provides a series first – being screened in 3D. Let's hope it's a spell-binding ending that does Rowling's Harry Potter legacy justice.

(3DS) Out now What better way to start this month’s Game On with one of the most revolutionary games of all-time – now in compactly glorious 3D. Hyrule has never looked better as Link embarks on his biggest adventure yet to stop the evil Ganondorf getting his hands on the holy relic, the Triforce. Fortunately the nigh-on-flawless game hasn’t been unduly meddled with (bar graphical upgrading) – paying respect to a thirteen-year-old classic that is still one of the greatest.
CHILD OF EDEN
INFAMOUS 2 (PS3) Out now
(360) Out now
It was going to be hard to improve on one of the PS3’s best-ever exclusives – but developer Sucker Punch has electrified us once again. Cole MacGrath is back with a great in-depth campaign that has a wealth of main missions, superb optional side quests, a great third-person sandbox world to parkour around – and expanded powers that add fire and ice to Cole’s electricity-based arsenal.
Talking of exclusives – until it comes out on the PS3 in September at least – this is one of the biggest Kinectbased games of the year. The motion controller has had a quiet spell without many major releases, but this trippy shooter takes you on a colourfully eclectic journey through space to help save an archive of human memories being destroyed by a virus.
It’s hampered by niggling camera issues, but with 20 hours-plus gameplay this is one of PS3’s year bests.
It’s too short, but this is uplifting, immersive and original stuff which is arguably Kinect’s best.

Multiplayer – offline as well as online – is the main unique selling point of this first person shooter.
ALICE: MADNESS RETURNS
#####
There’s not a wealth of satisfying role-playing games on home consoles – but this is one of the better entries. It’s by no means flawless as some essential RPG mechanics are poorly implemented – mainly lame treasures taking the enjoyment out of searching this crumbling kingdom – but as one of four legionnaires, the combat system is top notch.
(PS3/360/PC) Out now
(360/PS3/PC) Out now
Two campaigns – to save or escape a floating city called The Ark – and great weapon customisation makes it stand-out in some areas, but it is sadly let down by fighting and objectives-based repetition, leaving it short when compared to FPS greats.
Still one of the genre’s best in 2011.
With some neat ideas, the title says it all – this is on the brink of greatness.

MX VS ATV: ALIVE
DIRT 3
(360/PS3) Out now
Bigger and better than ever – Dirt 3 leaves the rest standing with a face full of dust.
The latest MX vs ATV games fails to better its predecessor – by sucking the life out of it with a massive gaming flaw. The general gaming mechanics for all vehicles (particularly Motocross) is pretty decent, but sadly you have to do the same course incessantly to raise your experience level and unlock more courses – leading to nonsensical repetition. This bizarre decision drives the fun out of the game – leaving this only for franchise die-hards.
Review
DVD
But for every good point – creepy and inventive design, noteworthy weaponry and impressive unlockables – it is hampered by some bad ones – predictable gameplay, inconsistent graphics and some dodgy platforming design. Despite that, this is a Mad Hatter of a game that’s still worth exploring. #####
GREEN LANTERN: RISE OF THE MANHUNTERS
(PS3/360/PC) Out now
The third instalment of Codemasters’ acclaimed series is the pick of the bunch, boasting eerily realistic handling and stunning graphics – as you race night and day in extreme conditions through the Dirt rally tour. Equipped with more cars, tracks and events – including the show-stealing Gymkhana – as the late Colin McRae’s famous saying goes: ‘when in doubt, flat it out!’ #####
#####
One game that deserves plaudits for being different is this darkly imagined world of Wonderland – with evil now descending on Alice’s once beautiful refuge.
(PSP) Out now For once a video game movie tiein is actually better than the film – but sadly that isn’t saying much. The general essence of power using Green Lantern’s mythical ring to restore intergalactic order makes this serviceable fare – but it’s no Batman or Spidey. Sadly doing the same thing over and over again makes this ultimately an underwhelming superhero experience that is over far too quickly. #####
THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU (12) Released: July 4 The chemistry between Matt Damon and Emily Blunt keeps this romantic-cum-sci-fi thriller entertaining – despite a disjointed tone. Damon stars as US senate candidate David Norris, who falls for quirky dancer Elise (Blunt), only for mysterious agents to start trying to keep them apart in order to retain the natural progression of Norris’ life. This leads to a watchably flawed affair let down by a predictable ending.
###
UNKNOWN (15) Released: July 18 Liam Neeson has to work hard to keep up with this serviceable thriller that’s guilty of overdosing on an intriguing idea. He stars as Dr Martin Harris, who awakens from a car crash in Berlin with the realisation his life has been stolen, and aided by Diane Kruger, aims to piece his life back together and work out why his wife (January Jones) doesn’t recognise him. But despite being bogged down by implausibility, Neeson is always good value.

THE POSH PLAY-OFF PAPARAZZI PARTY
Two Victor Meldrews, there's only two Victor Meldrews!
Last month the ESP team travelled up to Old Trafford in Manchester to watch Posh v Huddersfield Town in the Div 1 play-off final. Myself, roving reporter Mikey, sales exec Maggie, Vali from the dance crew, Chris in photography, and former Faces of ESP Tori and Kerry were all on hand to capture the atmosphere and excitement of supporters before, during and after the stunning 3-0 victory.
Come on Boro ! (notice that the gate behind is named esp)
Our live music writer Keith Dalton also took Mrs D their for the day and told me – "It's the perfect way to get promotion.... IF YOU WIN!! I was pleased this was at Old Trafford because as someone who’d been to the previous play-off victory at the old Wembley it was a nice change to go North. We Posh fans were outnumbered 3 to 1 by Huddersfield and we weren't given free tee-shirts but we out-sung them throughout the whole match. It was a great day in the city’s sporting history." For me one of the highlights of the day was a banner which read ‘Craig Mackail-Smith scores more often than Ryan Giggs’ – but all in all it was, in the words of Peterborough United club historian Pete Lane the – “greatest day and game with Posh!” It was a great road trip for us all and I think our mini paparazzi efforts show what a laugh we all had… except for the Huddersfield fans of course!

Mikey's magic foam hand. How is he balancing that bottle of beer?!
News has reached me that the Peterborough United Legends team will be competing in the Central Masters footy competition for ex-pros. It takes place on Saturday July 16 in Nottingham at the Capital FM Arena. The Posh Legends will be captained by winger David Farrell who spent nine years at the club, scored arguably the greatest ever Posh hat-trick in the 2000 play-off semi-final and was also a columnist for ESP back in 2005/06. This is the first time a Posh Legends team has competed in a competition like this so if you fancy cheering Faz and the lads on visit www.mastersfootball.com for ticket info.

Believe it or not, Thorpe Hall Hospice has been providing first class health care across our region for twenty years this year. In that time they’ve cared for more than 7,000 patients as well as more than 500 outpatients in their day centre. To commemorate this incredible milestone, fundraiser (and ESP writer) Michael Clarke is challenging you to fundraise around the number 20 in honour of the anniversary – at any point during the month of July.
‘Happy Birthday to Sue, Happy Birthday to Sue…’ Anyone can take part in the Plenty For Twenty campaign as the fundraising possibilities are endless. For those feeling extremely adventurous, why not sky dive with a friend? You’ll be jumping 10 thousand feet each (20 thousand in total). You could hold a footy, pool, or bowling tournament with 20 teams entering, run 20 miles, or simply bake and sell 20 cakes. To promote the campaign, Michael recently spent 20 hours on a treadmill in Serpentine Green Shopping Centre. On completing the challenge at 2pm on Saturday June 25 (after starting 6pm on the Friday!) our mad writer told ESP – “I’m unbelievably tired and exhausted but it was worth it. Sue Ryder has made a difference to so many lives in Peterborough and beyond during the last 20 years. I’d love for people to be inspired by my challenge and fire up their own imagination whilst taking part in Plenty For Twenty.” So it’s time to do your bit to help Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice to make sure they can make a big difference to the community for another 20 years. If you’d like more info on the Plenty For Twenty campaign, contact Michael Clarke on 01733 330060 or email Michael.clarke@sueryder.org To sponsor him for that hideously difficult treadmill challenge, visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/plenty4twenty – we reckon he deserves it! Now, where are those blister plasters…
ESP’s Mikey Clarke joins Al Murray on the box! If you were going to enter a TV quiz show, you’d most likely be on the look out for something fun, challenging perhaps – and most definitely with a big money prize at the end of it. After years of trying to get on Deal Or No Deal, I opted for a different approach. Al Murray’s Compete For The Meat is a comedy game show where teams compete for the grand prize of… a frozen chicken, sausages for the runners-up, and pure shame for the losers! It sounded perfect – a fun-filled day with my mates, no pressure to win or lose, and mum would see me on TV. So I applied, and was promptly invited to the BBC studios in London with two other mates to film an episode. Al Murray explained the genesis of the show. “We’ve ended up with a TV programme when we had no intention of making one!” laughed the comedian. “Originally, we did the Compete For The Meat show in Edinburgh purely for our own entertainment – but luckily, other people were entertained by it, too. A commissioning editor from Dave came to see it and said, ‘Can’t we make it as a TV show?’”
56
www.espmag.co.uk
Al continued – “Delightfully, Dave instantly got the point: it’s meant to be chaotic. The prize is a frozen chicken plus a giblet bag if we can find one! The idea of offering a frozen chicken is that there’s no way we can compete with a million-pound prize – after all, this is austerity Britain! So people should be grateful for winning a frozen chicken – makes perfect sense to me! And the questions are difficult. People have to play for glory.” Err, yes – the questions were difficult, and due to that I already know I made a bit of a prat out of myself. Question – ‘which city hosted the Olympic Games in… some random year, I forget. Everyone else had got the answer wrong so I thought I had nothing to lose with my guessed answer of… Cyprus. It was the heat of the moment, and I’m sticking to that excuse. This answer caused a few laughs from the audience, but was nothing compared to the response from an outfit I was forced to wear. You’ll know what I’m talking about if you watch the show. My team of three, aptly named ‘Team Tri-Pod’ (as our original name was too inappropriate – see me for more details) are on the last show of the series – so you can see how we got on by tuning into Dave on Thursday July 7 at 9pm.

WOOFSTOCK BANDS AND BEERS AT YARWELL It doesn’t get better than live music and beers and a great little festival called Woofstock has two days of both! Woofstock was created by Nick and Di Lander at the Angel Inn at Yarwell three years ago to help raise funds for the Retired Greyhound Trust. The third Woofstock takes place on Saturday July 30 and Sunday July 31 with live music all day, BBQ and beer festival. Musically, there’s a fantastic range of styles with many local bands taking to the stage – the line-up includes: Gone To The Dogs (of course!), Richard Gombault, We Sell Tigers, Captain Backwash and the Barley Boy (and Girl), Rafters Raisers, The Steradents, The Supercalas, 101 Proof, DGAS, Hannah Joyce, Kickback, Heff n Lee, Halo, Glass Heart, Sellout and Lloyd Watson – what a line-up! The day is MC’ed by DJ Boults and the Wheels of Steel Roadshow. It’s all free entry, but of course donations in aid of the doggies are encouraged! There’s more music lined up at the pub this month including:

PAT’S ON STAGE
The Deeping Stage has achieved a real coup by booking legendary Irish guitarist Pat McManus for an appearance at The Stage on July 12. Pat visits Market Deeping in the middle of a European tour which takes in Norway, Italy, Holland and a huge festival on the French island of Corsica. Pat’s work has earned him a reputation as one of Britain’s top guitarists and his gigs always feature some fiddle work (All Ireland Fiddle Champion at the age of 14 don’t you know!). He’s worked as a session musician on many hit recordings and is probably most famous for lead guitar in 80’s rock band Mamas Boys. They toured and supported some big names in the USA and here in Britain. Names such as Deep Purple, Bon Jovi and Sheryl Crow. A quality pedigree and a rare opportunity to see Pat McManus at the Deeping Stage on July 12 – don’t miss him.

TIME TO ENTER BORO BATTLE OF THE BANDS The guys at the Boro Bar on Oundle Road (formerly The Boys Head) have been in touch about their Battle Of The Bands event over the August bank holiday weekend. It’s free for bands to enter and if you fancy your chances you need to be a minimum of a three piece and play your own original material. Just grab an application form from the bar. Prizes include £500 cash, a day's professional studio hire to get a CD made up and more to come. Keep an eye on www.theborobar.co.uk and www.battleoftheband.co.uk in future for more details.
DEBBIE DOES BOURNE Look at this photo. You would be forgiven for identifying Blondie, because it’s so like Debbie Harry. But it isn’t. It’s Michelle Hendriks who’s a local girl from Long Sutton. Michelle is lead singer with Blondied, who appear at Bourne Corn Exchange on July 15. The concert will feature all of Blondie’s hits, from their raucous early records right up to the slick pop/rock that’s become Blondie’s trademark in the 21st century. Also included will be some of Debbie Harry’s solo hits, such as French Kissing In The USA and I Want That Man. Michelle possesses quite a remarkable likeness to Debbie and has numerous TV appearances to her credit. She’s fast becoming one of the best known faces on the musical tribute scene. Blondied will be supported with up and coming band, The Jokers whose debut album The Big Rock & Roll Show has already grabbed the attention of many influential people in the music industry and is receiving huge airplay on the rock radio stations. Tickets for July 15 from the Bourne Corn Exchange box office on: 0782 803 2241.
COCKNEY REJECTS AND INSPIRAL SINGER @ SHED WEEKENDER One of the UK’s most influential punk bands is set to play in Peterborough for the second time in the last four years. The Cockney Rejects have had several top 40 hits, topping the Indie charts and playing at sell out tours around the world. They’ll be headlining this year’s annual SHED Scooter Weekender event at The Plough in Farcet Fen from July 15 – 17, and have got some great tunes lined-up. Photo: Stephen Russell – You Think We Print
That’s not all – Tom Hingley – former lead singer of The Inspiral Carpets is also playing live. The Inspirals ran out of steam in 1995 and Tom Hingley drifted into solo projects on the fringes of the pop mainstream. However, a chance encounter in 2001 with Steve Hanley – former bassist and longest serving musician with legendary Manchester band, The Fall led Hingley and Hanley to join forces to form The Lovers and have a great stage show ready for the SHED Weekender.

Other bands on the bill are The Sex Pistols Experience, The Universal who are the country’s most up and coming Mod band, The Rawmones, Brightsparks, Luna Vegas, Guns of Naverone and C.R.A.M. There are also eight DJs on the weekender bill, which promises to be the best yet! It’s right on your doorstep and you don’t have to be a Scooter-rider to attend. Tickets are £20, plus £1 booking fee for the whole weekend, and that includes camping too! For more information visit www.shedmag.com. It’s sure to be a good one. www.espmag.co.uk

New Model Army
July the real start of summer – allegedly – although we haven’t had it too bad of late the long hot spring made spending weekends in fields very pleasurable. I even had to put sun cream on at Glastonbudget on the Friday. The festival itself was a full-on success as predicted, full of great bands, great people and fun to be at. The two women who entertained a crowd of around three hundred in front of the beer tent (where else is there to stand?) by falling over a dozen or more times in 50 metres was hilarious. Especially the moment that one of them, splay-legged like Bambi, leant forward to pick up her scarf and promptly head butted the ground – priceless! It was the only time at the festival I didn’t have my camera with me… bugger! I’ve even searched YouTube but their dignity to the outside world remains intact – just. In terms of bands well, Mercury, the Queen tribute, rocked the field to close Saturday night, Enraged, the really cool Rage Against the Machine tribute, blew the Prodigy outta sight on Friday and on Sunday Guns 2 Roses had us all aye aye a aye ayeing to finish the weekend. Back next year? Yup.
So the summer starts here and this month, as always, is Cambridge Folk Festival July 28- July 31. I hear so many of you good people say to me – ‘Yeah would love to go but you can’t get tickets, it always sells out,’ well look at the website, at the time of writing the only things sold out are Saturday day tickets so get off your perch and purchase now! It’s a bostin line up too, with Richard Thomson and Mary Chapin Carpenter up with headline Laura Marling. I personally have

picked out a few to look up on the weekend, the Robert Cray Band for one, who’ll be dealing out some real slick blues as they have done for the last 40 years. Newton Faulkner is another guitar player who’ll command my attention as will the Secret Sisters, Justin Townes Earle, Katzenjammer and The Peatbog Faeries. Hobo Jones and the Junkyard Dogs played an impromptu set outside stage two last year and got a Saturday afternoon, slighty worn crowd shakin’ their collective ass. I’m guessing this year they’ll have bagged themselves a set on stage and deservedly so.
There’s as always a hundred things for the kids if you’re thinking of making a family weekend of it, Coldham’s Common campsite is quieter and particularly family friendly with storytelling from my old pal John Row, willow weaving, painting and plenty of other stuff too. It’s funny how many ‘big kids’ get entranced by a good story. Cambridge is not so much a festival as a social event, this year I think is my 20th visit and I remember talking to people way back when and thinking – ‘Bloody hell they’ve been coming here for 20 years, old codgers’ – and that’s now me! Oh dear where did it go?? See www.cambridgefolkfestival.co.uk for more. Earlier in the month the excellent Rock ‘n’ Bike Fest on July 14-16 returns with a new venue, the Sanford Hall estate, a sprawling country pile near Loughborough. New Model Army headline along with Toyah Wilcox and classic pub rockers The Quireboys. With tributes to Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Rammstein, Foreigner and Journey you get the drift of the sort of music you’re gonna get. Loud and hard rockin’. The folks there last year were brilliant to party with, I witnessed a fella gallantly trying to hold up his Toyah partner and preserve her modesty by holding up her jeans which were heading south with every step. In the end she hit the deck and mooned the whole campsite, pretty! If you like your bikes there’s a custom bike and trike show and if you’re inked up you can enter the tattoo competition in which women of various shapes and sizes display their tatts with wild abandon, again a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon! Go to www.rockandbikefest.co.uk for the ticket info which will tell you that the tickets are, wait for it, a paltry £30 including camping. That is ridiculously cheap especially when you consider the entertainment, the setting and people that you’ll meet. In my book it’s the best value festival of the summer, you’d be crazy not to. That’s it ’til August folks… don’t forget yer sunscreen!
