Hundreds of warriors will be on hand to re-create a full scale Viking battle and living history camps will be dotted around the event to explore what life was like a thousand years ago. There will also be fun family activities and storytelling throughout the day.

JOIN THE RACE FOR LIFE ESP is proudly supporting Race For Life at Ferry Meadows on Tuesday July 10. ESP’s Sarah Tempest is an avid supporter, compering events around the country and is urging girls to get going and join the fun…
The word ‘Race’ is misleading as it’s not about how fast you get round, it’s much more about the taking part, the sharing of experiences, the atmosphere, the doing something positive for such a cruel disease and of course, raising lots of money for Cancer Research UK. So running, walking and crawling are all perfectly fine; over the years I’ve even seen ladies do it on stilts, three legged and my personal favourite – commando style – which thankfully meant crawling on their bellies and not knickerless as I first feared!

Summer is (sort of) here and for me and thousands of other women, summer would not be complete without taking part in a Race For Life event. This is a series of events, held all around the country, where women of all ages complete a 5km course to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Sadly almost all of us will have been affected by cancer in some way, whether it’s a friend, relative or even ourselves and I’m no different as I lost both my Auntie and Gran to cancer within five months of each other. When I first heard about Race For Life in 1999, doing something so positive in their memory seemed like the perfect incentive to get fitter so I signed up to take part in my first race in Milton Keynes. There I met a gorgeous family who all had big pink balloons, deeley boppers and were wearing t-shirts with a photo on of the same lady. The lady was the girls’ sister, auntie and mum. They’d been through so much sadness together but they were smiling, and having fun and it was clearly a comfort to be doing something together in her name and her memory. I’ve never forgotten them. The first ever Race For Life was held in London in 1994 and since then, has raised over £400million to help Cancer Research UK continue their pioneering work. Thanks to that work, more women than ever are surviving breast cancer and survival rates for both bowel cancer and children’s cancers have more than doubled. So if ever there was a reason to lace up your trainers and get involved, there it is. The more of us that get involved, the more people will hear the “all clear” message. As the slogan says, it really is ‘All Of Us Against Cancer’. Read more from Sarah on www.espmag.co.uk and enter Race For Life on www.raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org
OUNDLE FESTIVAL IS BJÖRN AGAIN Oundle International Festival is back this month with the legendary ABBA show Björn Again as the headline act for this year’s Picnic in the Park. Kicking off proceedings at 5pm on Saturday July 14 will be Oundle Rocks, a showcase of talented young local bands, followed by fabulous world music act Grupo Lokito with an exciting fusion of Cuban and Congolese music featuring salsa and rumba beats.
DEEPING RAFT RACE RETURNS This year’s raft race will have Olympic themed rafts racing down the River Welland in Market Deeping on Sunday August 5. It’s all to raise money for local sports clubs in keeping with the 2012 spirit of the Olympics. There’ll be plenty to do with loads of craft and trade stalls lining the river with a fun fair in the town square, plus a flypast by an aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. So head down and join in the fun, whether it’s to show your support or to enter yourself and a team and build a raft for the race! Visit www.deepingsraftrace.com for more info.
DEEPING BEER FESTIVAL GOES LARGE
World-famous ABBA act Björn Again will then take to the stage to wow the crowds rocking Oundle’s Heron Rogers Field (situated between Benefield Road and Glapthorn Road) and the evening ends with a spectacular firework display!
This year will be the ninth annual Deepings Beer Festival and is set to be the biggest yet! It’s on July 27 & 28 and will have more than 60 real ales, country wines, specialist lagers and scrumpy ciders arriving from across the country. There’ll be popular local bands performing on both nights, and it’s expected to attract many real ale and music lovers from across the Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Rultand counties.
Tickets are available from Oundle box office, 4 New Street, Oundle, Tel: 01832 274734 or online at www.oundlefestival.org.uk.
It’s ideal for all the family, and is free admission thanks to the generosity of volunteers and donations from local and regional companies. The beer fest takes place from 3pm on Friday July 27 and 12pm on Saturday July 28 at the Deepings Rugby Club. For more info visit www.deepingsrufc.co.uk.

FINALS NIGHT
It could be you Friday September 7
FaceofESP’12
at the Executive Suite at Peterborough United.
OK girls, are you ready to step out and make your mark on the world? Fancy bagging yourself some fantastic prizes and becoming a ‘face’ about town? It’s time to take the plunge and enter this year’s Face of ESP. It’s not a beauty contest, we’re looking for a girl who looks after herself but who also has personality and that magic something. We want someone to represent ESP Magazine for a year promoting all that we have to offer and to have a fantastic time whilst doing it. The current Face of ESP Jessica Lockhart is a great example of how an ordinary girl has been transformed by the competition. Local fitness instructor one day – local celebrity the next! Jess says she’s been loving it so far – “This last year, being the Face of ESP, has been absolutely amazing. I have had so many opportunities that I would never have had previously. I've had the chance to meet celebrities, attend launch parties of businesses, go to balls, take part in regular photo shoots and the best part – being a new member of the ESP family. “This has been one of the best years I've had and I appreciate everything that the ESP team have done for me and the opportunities they’ve given me over the time I've had with them. It’s going to be really hard to hand the title over but I’ll be making sure I still keep in touch and fingers crossed I’ll get the chance to work with everyone again.” You’ve nothing to lose by taking part – we’re not looking for the finished article. You’ll grow and develop during the year; we just need to see that spark. Loads of ordinary local girls have already entered and Jess added – “Good luck to all the girls who enter this year, and if you haven't already – make sure you do!” So come on girls – this year it really could be you living the life and bagging loads of fabulous prizes! The sooner you enter, the sooner we will be able to announce if you’ve qualified for the semi-final previews. The next semi-final date is at the end of July, so time is of the essence. After that, the next step is the final!

“NO JEANS ON SATURDAYS” Coffee MY WORD OF THE MONTH
“It’s going to be collar, trousers and shoes – absolutely no jeans on Saturdays.” This is the message from one of the owners of a new city nightspot opening at the end of the year.
service we’ll receive will be presented to the highest of standards never before seen in our city. We’re talking designer décor, themed booths and even classy toilets.
A couple of months ago I exclusively revealed plans to open a premium nightclub in our city were well underway. I’ve now seen the 3D visuals and the place is going to look absolutely amazing.
The venue’s capacity will be 350, 180 of which is seated and the music I’m assured will be quality – think more Frank Sinatra than Five Star.
“It’s not working out between us.”
I’m also privy to the club’s name, but of course I’m sworn to secrecy. For what it’s worth, I like the name but a name is just for the outside – if the inside isn’t done right then it might as well be called Lineker’s Bar.
It’s all going to be about the feel good factor and trust me you’ll be embarrassed to even think about wearing jeans. Anyone who remembers L’Aristo’s in the early 1990s will understand.
“Damn last night was good – I think.”
But I can promise you everything about the inside including the
Watch this space for more details and photos as the project begins to unravel…
Because so many things get discussed over it by so many people:
“You’re not hitting your targets, I’m going to have to let you go.” “She’s such a bitch, the office would be better without her.” “Does my bum look big in this?” “So what was your name again?” “Do you still fancy me?”
READY TEDDY FOR CHARITY FUNDRAISER Every so often I don’t mind being photographed looking like an idiot if it’s for charity. This is one of those occasions. I’m writing this in the hope my editor doesn’t print the photo where it looks like I’m touching up a giant teddy bear. If she does then all I can say is that I’ll do (almost) anything for Cancer Research but it’s clear my best days in front of the camera are slowly becoming a distant memory.
ACCESSORISE JUST LIKE HER INDOORS A young lady who shall remain anonymous (but we’ll call her Megan for a name’s sake) didn’t realise motorcycles too can be accessorised just like a Top Shop dress needs a Karen Millen handbag. Megan (again, this is a fictional name for the sake of this story) was telling me how she discovered this fact on a recent trip to the BMW Balderston showroom with her boyfriend. He purchased an R 1200 GS (similar to the
It was a rainy (shock, horror) afternoon at The Lime Tree pub in Walton but it was all sunshine indoors as fundraiser Nicola Chagger collected more than £200 for Cancer Research in just a few hours at a family day and car boot fundraiser.

To find out more, TRF Cambridgeshire meet at The Seven Wives, Ramsey Road, St Ives, (PE27 5RF) on the first Thursday of the month at 8pm. Alternatively give the good guys at Balderston a call on 01733 565470 and they’ll put you in touch with the organiser.
Megan now thinks she can finally justify to her boyfriend spending hundreds of pounds accessorising some of her best outfits. No Megan, the BMW accessories are free! Girls just don’t get it (no doubt I’ll get some stick for that comment). Something else that might interest GS owners is the chance to take your machine off-road locally. The Trail Riders Fellowship group is offering you this opportunity and routes will suit riders of all abilities.

YOU SAID, THEY DID: NEW SOUNDS AT EDWARDS Edwards, Flares and Reflex are planning some big new themed nights to mark exciting changes to the all in one venue. I’m pleased to see this popular venue evolving, as it’s one of two or three bars that you can always count on having a good time in. One day I’ll tell you some stories… Anyway, they’ve been talking to their customers to find out what they want from a great night out. The feedback is for more varied music, so that’s what we’re getting from now on. Romeo (So Solid Crew) will be performing on July 5. Also performing at Flares will be Jo and Bradley from S Club 7 on August 3. And fans of nu disco, indie dance, electro and house will enjoy ‘Mixology’ – a new dance music night every last Friday of the month at Reflex. Another night to look forward to is Luv Bug, which is a unique stage show combining a blend of good time party music and comedy. The crew perform in full 1970s costumes and involve the crowd. First show is on July 6.
TUESDAY NIGHT IS BIKE NIGHT As per the heading really, except every time I plan to go to ‘Bike Night’ at Harley’s Diner in Market Deeping it’s flippin’ raining! I’m a textbook fair weather rider so you won’t catch me throwing a leg over my motorbike if it’s raining, if the wind’s blowing more than 15 mph or if the temperature is less than 10c. But that hasn’t stopped ‘proper’ motorcyclists riding to Harley’s on a Tuesday to tuck into a meal deal from the menu plus a drink for just a fiver. This is a great offer, mainly because I know the food is top notch at Harley’s. Bike night is every week from 5pm until 9pm until September. I’ll be there as long as we get a decent Tuesday weather-wise within the next three months! Check out their Facebook page for all the latest events and promotions www.facebook.com/harleysdiner
MY FOOD PORN LUST FOR CLARKES I wish I had more than a few lines to go into detail about how great the food at Clarkes Peterborough is, but I haven’t. All I can say is, if you haven’t eaten there yet then you really need to. The last time I put something that good in my mouth I ended up in a relationship (no sexual connotation intended).

How to look
GREAT in a suit ESP’s local style guru Sue Donnelly has these top tips…
Fashion designer Jeff Banks became a household name presenting the Clothes Show and hasn’t stayed out of the limelight since. Jeff made a personal visit to his outlet store at Springfields in Spalding where he met shoppers and kitted out our ESP competition winner Nigel Griffin with a £275 pound suit!
• Fit is crucial. A jacket is too tight if you find horizontal ‘drag’ lines across your back or you can’t fasten it across the tummy area. The sleeves should be short enough so that you can see about 1 inch of your shirt cuffs.. Many jackets are too long. As a rule of thumb, the hem should fall into a cupped hand when arms are extended downwards.
Photos: Chris Brudennell
HOW TO BE A SHARP DRESSED MAN
• Most suits are made with a 6 inch drop, (the difference between the waist and the chest measurements) so a 32 inch waist trouser would be sold with a 38 inch chest jacket as these fit the majority of the population. If you’re naturally broad across the shoulder or work out a lot you might find this doesn’t work. The trousers will be too large or the jacket too tight. Look for ranges that sell each item separately. The same applies if you’re big around the middle!
This store stocks his range of suits and casual wear at great prices. You can’t beat a sharp dressed man but fellas often find buying a suit a chore so Sharon McAllister asked Jeff for his guide to smartening up… “Most important is to make sure the fit is absolutely perfect, so you need to try on lots of different brands to get the feel of what’s right for you,” Jeff explained. “When you hit on that right fit, in my opinion stick with it because that’s the most important factor. “Then when it comes down to choice of fabric, it used to be always go for pure new wool. The fact is suiting has got much lighter these days, and as they get lighter it’s good to incorporate an element of polyester, nylon or lycra into the fabric to actually make it resilient when it’s a very thin lightweight fabric. So what are the main mistakes guys make when it comes to this important purchase? “The biggest error for me is
their sleeves are too long,” Jeff told me. “Although things don’t change dramatically there are subtle changes so the width of trousers, the width of a lapel – even if you’ve got three buttons on a coat, are they close together? There are things that alter that you need to pay attention to.
• During business meetings, the bottom button of your jacket should always be left unbuttoned. The others should be fastened when you stand.
Another crime against suit wearing Jeff says is supersizing your jacket! “Blokes think having a bigger jacket is comfortable but it just makes them look like they’re from the 80s!”
• Hand stitching is a sign of quality so expect to pay more.
So to stay on trend what does Jeff recommend – “If you’re thinking of buying one thing try a little cotton blazer or a tweed blazer coming up to the winter with the minimal of shoulder pads, so the softest shoulder possible. This winter there are going to be a lot of blazers made out of jersey, knitted fabric and again they’re fantastically comfortable, so if I was going to buy one thing for the autumn I’d buy one of those.”
• ‘Kissing’ buttons, buttons that nudge one another on the sleeve, is a sign of quality.
• Really slim leg trousers will end at the top of the shoe. Wider trousers should have one drop (pleat) and should be longer at the back than the front, dissecting half the heel of your shoe from the back view. • The most authoritative or formal way to wear a suit is a white shirt, plain tie and plain coloured suit. Generally, one pattern and two plains or one plain and two patterns is a great look. Three patterns i.e. pin stripe suit, patterned tie and striped shirt is overwhelming. • Suits can be worn with T-shirts or fine knits for a casual look. • Belts should match shoe colour. • Double breasted suits, which aren’t really fashionable, are the only suits to have turn ups on the trousers. • Pin stripes were originally created for those who worked in finance, as they represented the lines of a ledger. These days they’re popular all over the world and are great for those who are height challenged. • Make it ‘yours’ by adding interest in your tie, socks or cufflinks. Interest doesn’t mean Donald Duck! www.suedonnelly.com

'SPORT' BILLY – FIRESTARTER FOR TEAM GBH If you read any of the stories of the 7,000 people selected to take part in the London 2012 Olympic Torch relay across Great Britain you’ll find inspirational stories of triumph over adversity, selfless sacrifice, amazing feats of sporting achievement and charity fundraising. I know someone who's done just this and is one of the local people who'll be carrying it on the Peterborough leg of the route on July 3 and 4. It promises to be a fantastic occasion, and one that people of our city can be proud of.
The only time I can ever remember Billy doing anything remotely heroic is when he rescued Vicki Fowler from a fire... but as it was a fire Billy started on purpose it's not really that heroic is it? Or what about the time he became a foster dad to Jay Dyer in 2008? Oh, no hang on a minute I've just remembered Billy only fostered Jay out of guilt because Billy had acted as a getaway driver for Jay's dad Jason and then hid in a cupboard crying while Terry Bates stabbed Jase to death. And thanks to Billy being such an excellent role model ever since, Jay’s become an accomplice in the murder of Heather Trott by Billy's cousin’s son Ben. Forget Team GB, this was yet another sordid victory for Team GBH and the Mitchells!

Meanwhile, the writers of Eastenders have decided that the character whose on screen CV best represents the Olympic ideals is Billy Mitchell and on July 23, the soap opera will show the character shamelessly carrying the Olympic Torch around Albert Square. Now, there's been some pretty far fetched storylines in Eastenders over the years, but one where a character best known for being a lackey in a crime family, an arsonist, a drugs runner, a getaway driver, a thief, a coward and a liar is the person they feel best represents the Olympic values of peace, friendship and unity seems very ill-judged. This is someone who burnt down the E20 nightclub in 2002, then in 2004 when it was re-named Angie's Den he burnt that down as well. It's latest incarnation 'The RNR' has so far escaped a similar fate, but letting a known arsonist carry the Olympic Torch is just asking for trouble. What are Eastenders going to do next, a storyline where Michael Barrymore arrives to open Walford's new swimming pool?!
COMEDY GIGS
STAMFORD COMEDY CLUB
But surely the loveable loser Billy has done his bit for charity in Eastenders since he joined in 1998 – run the London Marathon perhaps? Nope, a quick look on Wikipedia reveals the only charity storyline he's been involved in is when he stole the charity collection tin from the Queen Vic in 2009 because he was 'down on his luck'. But hey, it's not too late for the Eastenders scriptwriters to redeem themselves and introduce a storyline where Billy's arrested by the police on the day he's meant to be carrying the Torch because he poses a security threat. Then with all of Albert Square wondering who'll replace Billy, we see the silhouette of two famous Londoners carrying the torch, the camera pans back and reveals Del Boy and Rodney dressed as Batman & Robin running by and going 'na na na na na' and everything!

paparazzi Caught in the act? THE WILLOW AND THE DRAGONS We love catching you all in the act of having a great time out an about and there are so many good things going on to celebrate. The Willow Festival made a rousing return to the Embankment just as we went to press with the last issue and was certainly blessed with the weather. You made the most of it and our lensman Mike Harris was there to snap you all enjoying the music and the sun. Word is it will all be back again next year so watch this space. It wasn't quite so hot at the Dragon Boat Festival more recently but that didn't dampen the action on the River Nene as dozens of local companies raced to the beat of the drum. The eventual winners were 20 Battery, 16 Regiment RA and the mixed champions were Emerald House Associates with Cavemen & the Nene Angels from Accent Nene Limited the charity winners after raising an amazing ÂŁ6,447 for EACH! ESP
CELEBS
T
he ‘nation’s sweetheart’ and our favourite Geordie lass is back under the spotlight – a million lights to be precise. ESP finds out what’s in store from Cheryl Cole’s latest album…
Cheryl’s ‘worth it’ for L’Oreal, put the X in the X Factor and in her marriage (having ditched Mr.Cole) and has certainly reaped revenge on one Simon Cowell over comments in that book. But for now it’s all about the music. “I’ve grown as a person and an artist; you can hear that in my music. I feel brand new,” explains Cheryl.“I’m bullet proof… I feel as hard as the times I’ve had but I think everything happens for a reason, even if you can’t always say what that reason is.” On the eve of a new era, Cheryl’s looking forward to (booty) shaking off her 20’s with her third studio offering, A Million Lights, an album showing a new found confidence and maturity. “On the first album I was sh*tting myself after seven years with Girls Aloud… I had to step forward on my own and prove myself. Now, with 3 Words and Messy Little Raindrops, I have had two number one albums so I feel I
26
www.espmag.co.uk
know what I’m doing. I fit into my own shoes now and I’m simply not worried anymore.” In fact, Cheryl’s sold over 10 million records, her debut single Fight For This Love even going to number 1 in 10 countries. In a further nod of approval, Grammy award winner Adele also performed a live version of Cheryl’s charttopping hit Promise This. Then there’s Cheryl’s two Brit Nominations, an accolade she’s hoping to build on with her latest release. A Million Lights draws heavily from Cheryl’s preferred R&B playlists – Beyonce and Erykah Badu all on shuffle – whilst also taking offroad trips into the dance tent, as witnessed on offerings from Calvin Harris (Call My Name) and the preferred dub-effects of newbies like Panther (Girl In The Mirror). “As soon as I heard the intro to the Calvin track I knew I had to have it. I love the energy of it and it’s the perfect introduction to summer,” she says of Call My Name.
Cheryl’s had nearly a year in the studio, working with a vast array of production talent, resulting in a powerful new chapter in her already impressive discography. “A Million Lights just felt right as the title track because it’s about how I feel – light and nice.” A sweet ballad if ever you’ve heard one, it further showcases Cheryl’s ability to channel vulnerability into the mix. “I could have picked 30 tracks I loved enough to put on this album. Since I started working on it last summer, July time, I literally went on a mission. “Under The Sun, which I did with Alex Da Kid, is a real ‘on the rise’ kind of track, more grown-up pop I guess. It definitely holds a special place in me.” A big influence for Cheryl is of course will.i.am, whose relationship spans across mentor, friend, manager, producer and collaborator. “Will is a crazy genius,” says Cheryl. “He said to me three years ago the next popstars will be DJs... Enter David Guetta, Calvin Harris et al… Will’s got amazing foresight and he’s super smart, he looks at me with an outside perspective and has really encouraged me, especially as a writer. But I don’t care if people know I wrote six songs on the first album or not. It can take a lifetime to master your craft and for me that’s getting on stage and performing, entertaining the crowd with a
song. I live for that. Sometimes for a songwriter that’s their worst nightmare. This album feels like a match made in heaven, and I’ve been able to work with some amazing talent.” One of the album’s highlights can be found under the guise of the will.i.am produced Craziest Things. “Will and I did this song for anyone who’s been in a volatile relationship – one day you’re in love, then you hate each other but you just can’t be without one another… We basically had an argument and recorded it. I remember just singing, ‘you think the sun shines out of your arse…’ Nobody in America knows the expression and thought I was a lyrical genius ha ha. Making an album creates great memories too.” As to her favourite track on the album it’s the dubstep excursion Girl In The Mirror that gets the nod. “I kept singing it after I’d been sent it and I could really relate to the idea of arguing with yourself and ‘who are you’. It also goes back to my fans, the Soldiers, we’re always worrying about stuff and sometimes you need to stop stressing. Yes life expects you to be strong but sometimes you just need to chill...” No time for that, Cheryl’s preparing to set out on her first headline solo tour this autumn! www.cherylcole.com

FANCY SOME DIVA FEVER COACHING? ESP’s Susan Saunders caught up with Peterborough singer Craig Saggers, one half of the X Factor’s flamboyant but ever popular Diva Fever. The duo are still busy performing but now Craig’s looking to help others on their route to success…
to Tracy and Aidan too. Twitter is revolutionary. We went through this incredible experience together so no surprise I suppose.”
Craig, who moments before had just hopped off the train in Oxford for a gig that evening, told me what Diva Fever (Craig and Josef Al-Smadi) had been up to over the past six months. Later on that night they were performing at The Plush Lounge night club as part of Oxford Pride (like Gay Pride in London).
Having done that successfully Craig is now starting to help other up-and-coming singers who need a little mentoring.
“Since I spoke to you last at the Peterborough lights switch on, Jo and I have been keeping busy gigging and recording new material,” Craig updated me. “We supported Marcus Collins from last year’s X Factor and girl band Parade who had their last song in the charts. Before recently, we were managing ourselves really but after talks with our now management company, we signed with them. We’ve been songwriting too and we’re in the process of working towards releasing something in the autumn. We only hoped for the possibility to release a track so we’re really looking forward to it! “I know we played up to the gimmicky thing on the show but people will be surprised with our material when they hear it.” Were they still in touch with any of the other X Factor contestants I wondered? “Yes! It’s been almost two years since we were on the show but we still talk to Mary, Wagner (OK so he didn’t set my world alight with his singing ability but I loved him!) and sometimes (less frequently) One Direction on Twitter. Although I’m not even sure they manage their own account, they’re so massively busy now. We speak
Craig and Jo were knocked out in the live stages but their appearances on TV built them a great fan base. I wonder if he’s still happy he applied despite not making it further in the show. “Being in a position to make a living out of singing is a dream. It’s not even fame that’s a motivation necessarily, the reason I entered X Factor, as you know (we both switched on the Christmas lights in Peterborough a few years back as soloists) it’s a hard industry to crack. X Factor has been a great platform to build a fan base.”
“I’ve recently qualified as a singing coach to provide singing lessons in Peterborough and the surrounding areas,” Craig tells me. “It’s aimed at upcoming talent who may want a career in the pop industry. “As a teenager there weren’t many local pop music coaches, mainly musical theatre and classical. I had to travel to London for pop lessons and had some with Carrie and David Grant, which was incredible. There are a lot more technicalities involved than just getting up and singing. I’m a grade five pianist too so wanted to do something that harnessed my musicianship. I’ve started building a student base already!” So, is it fair to say X Factor provided a unique opportunity? “Definitely – without the platform of X Factor, we wouldn’t be doing what we are. Before, I was at uni and singing was a sideline. “It’s annoying when people leave the show and turn all negative about the experience. You get great opportunities with fab mentoring and TV exposure. If you work hard and you take yourself seriously, you can get so much out of it. It’s nothing to sniff at – you just have to make the most of it.” After speaking to Craig, loads of fond memories came flowing back from my own experiences of competitive singing and X Factor. These days though, I’m happier singing at church and smiling at the programme’s latest ‘sob story’ and ‘next big thing’. For more info on Craig’s vocal coaching, just email craigvocalcoach@hotmail.co.uk or call 07749 011064, he’ll coach anyone aged 10 or above and charges £20 per hour or £15 for 30 minutes.

Sweet treatS
Step away from the cupcakes, it’s all about candy coloured make up this season. Here’s a pick of my favourite yummy sorbet shaded make-up collections...
L’Oreal’s Miss Candy Collection is sweet enough to eat. The eyeshadow line up is gorgeous with sassy Chamallow, Innocent Turquoise and Naughty Strawberry all beautifully summery with a kick of sparkle to make your eyes really pop, especially against a tan (if you’re lucky enough to have one yet!). I’m already a massive fan of the range’s Glam Shine lip glosses, available in six delicious new shades such as Cola Fizz and Bubble Pink... and as if one colour isn’t enough they’ve swirled two gorgeous colours together – double the shine! I’m officially smitten with this collection.
YSL’s Candy Face S/S 2012 Collection is fresh and filled with colour. It includes the Ombre 5 Lumieres palette the Vinyl Candy Palette featuring eyeshadows in soft pink, sky blue, mint green, sunny yellow and violet. There’s also the new Voile De Blush shades; a quad of soft pinks and purples which give a subtle wash of colour. Then there’s my favourite, the Volupte Sheer Candy lipsticks. I simply love YSL’s popping candy pastel colours and the sickly sweet inspiration behind the collection. Then there’s MAC’s take on the candy theme with their Beth Ditto collaboration where candy-glossed pop mixes with polished punk. Powder to the People, £21.50 is fun and playful with polka dots to create highlighting effects on your eyes by blending the super cute colours. The new Nail Lacquer shades are pastel heaven, choose from Life and Beth (a pastel peach), Near Beth Experience (soft lemon) or Vagabondage (a light lilac). If you didn’t have a sweet tooth before, you certainly will after sampling these beauty goodies!
Jenny paCKham for lanCôme Lancôme have launched their latest luxury gift and you’ll be pleased to hear it’s with design house Jenny Packham, favoured by many A-list celebs such as Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz. The vintage-style cosmetics purse, featuring a romantic floral design, is available to customers who simply purchase two Lancôme products (one to be skincare) from a Lancôme counter. Even better – it’s packed with a selection of travel size skin care and make-up products absolutely free! Dee Clements at our local Lancôme counter in Boots, Queensgate told me that since the launch they’ve been flying off the shelves so make sure you pay her a visit soon to ensure you don’t miss out. Lancôme also have some great new products coming out this month including a whole new eyeshadow collection, perfectly timed for the wedding season. There’s also the arrival of Génefique for Men (£56) so guys you have no excuse for tired looking skin. Don’t forget, as well as this elegant cosmetic purse you’ll also receive four points to the pound when you use your Boots Advantage card.

Moody Make-up...
eMotional Brilliance Lush introduces a brand new concept – matching your current state of mind to what colour cosmetics you should wear, it really is Emotional Brilliance. This groundbreaking new make-up range, consisting of lip colours, eyeshadows and eyeliners, is less about wearing what’s ‘in’ and more about wearing colours specific to you and your mood. They’ll reflect how you’re feeling at any moment and will be significant to you and your needs. Spin the Emotional Brilliance Colour Wheel and choose three colours that stand out to you at that time and these colours are linked to certain words such as confident, sophisticated or glamorous, which reveal how you’re feeling at that point. You then wear the colour to feel the word. Your three chosen colours are placed in the centre of the wheel in the order you picked them. Your first choice represents your strength or weakness, your second choice symbolises your subconscious need whilst your third choice is your talent. I’ve been lucky enough to test some of the products and admit they are fabulous. You can pick one of each or you could pick all lipsticks as you don’t have to wear them all at once. You choose how you wear them and create a look you’re happy with. It’s all about you! Not only do you get brilliant long lasting colour but you truly begin to wear the word and believe what you’re wearing. Lush have clearly put a huge amount of energy into ensuring the packaging is as minimal and recyclable as possible and they’re all suitable for vegans too. Available at Lush in Queensgate and online from July 21 – make sure you pop in and ‘word up’ for your day ahead.

The Peterborough Ladies team have been proving they can hold their own on the pitch showing that girls can scrum down just like the boys. Now they’re looking for some new recruits so could this be your new route to fitness? If you’re thinking it’s less than glamorous for girls to take part in just look at our own former Face of ESP Lauren Hughes – there’s no denying she looked the part modelling in ESP but she’s also been a mean little rugby player in her time! “As my boyfriend plays and I’d spent a lot of time around the game I developed an interest and thought I’d give it a go,” said Lauren. “I’ve always enjoyed sports and with not playing football for a few years I decided to train with the ladies team.” The ladies’ summer training starts on July 3 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm when anyone can join in and you don't have to have even held a rugby ball before to play!
ESP caught up with the girls at a training session where our Lauren couldn’t resist joining in with the line out. Spokesperson for the team Roxanne Richardson told ESP – “We have a range of abilities already but everyone is treated equally! Anyone who wants to try something new, be part of a team, make new friends, improve their fitness, and of course anyone who’s played before and wants to get back into it would be very welcome!” They’re also keen to develop an under 18s squad so all ages can play their part at the club at ‘Fortress Fengate’ on Second Drove. Now ladies, we appreciate your first thought might be that this is a game that’s going to hurt and surely Zumba will be a more gentle way to exercise! However, Roxy assures us that’s not necessarily the case – “We all know that rugby is a full contact sport but with the right training and technique used, injury is minimal.”

Happy Birthday
to you!
Co owner of the salon, Melanie McDonald told us – “Great Lengths hair is the highest and finest quality on the market and looks and feels completely natural. There’s such a variety of colours to choose from to help get just the right colour for our clients’ needs. The unique polymer bonds are pH balanced, don’t damage the hair and deliver undetectable, long lasting results.” There’s another new addition to the salon too with stylist Sophie Thackery bringing the team to five. She qualified six years ago and has trained with Lee Stafford and is particularly hot at the latest cuts!
The team at Melanie Richards
The creative team have also taken part in several ESP fashion shoots and made our models look great on the catwalk at the recent Glamour Galore event for Sue Ryder. It’s not just about hair though, this busy salon’s continued to grow by regularly introducing the latest products and beauty treats. Their nail technician offers fabulous manicures, the introduction of the popular Sienna X spray tan has gone down a storm and their sunbeds are all 0.3mw compliant for safe tanning. You’ll find all the top products and accessories here too from Tigi Bed Head to Kerastraight, Moroccanoil to Wella and GHD to Mycurl so whatever you need to look fabulous they can help.
One year in and the team at Melanie Richard’s Hair Boutique are celebrating not only their first birthday but their expansion!
It’s no wonder they’ll be celebrating with a special party on Friday July 13 – it might be an unlucky date for some but we reckon it’ll be nothing but good times as this salon celebrates big style!
They’ve had a cracking year already since opening on Bridge Street and have not only developed a busy client list with their hair stylists but have regularly introduced a range of new treatments to the salon including Kerastraight and Sienna X spray tans. The latest is the introduction of Great Lengths hair extensions available from mid July. Widely recognised as the very best available there’s a real buzz about the arrival of this new service in the salon. Although the team are experienced in hair extensions this will be the first time this range has been available.
Unusually there are two Wella Professional Master Colour Experts at Melanie Richard’s which has certainly played its part in attracting extra business, but all the stylists are highly experienced and professional.

HEALTHY
EATING with Karen Devine
A PLATEFUL OF COLOUR IN 2012 Local nutritionist Karen Devine is exploring how eating a rainbow of colours in your diet can give you great health benefits. So when you’re choosing your next meal make sure it’s a plateful of colour and eat up the benefits, it’s easy! Natural chemicals in plant foods are known to protect heal and repair our body. Eating a diet high in various colours from plant foods brings a host of phytochemicals (chemicals from plants) which are known to deliver health benefits along with the vitamins, minerals and fibre they also contain. Yellow colours deliver a variety of phytochemicals and we’d all automatically think of squash, corn and yellow peppers for
example, but not many would think of the dark green leafy veg which are very high in the pigment yellow. Think of the autumn when the leaves fall from the trees, we can see the yellow/amber colours of the leaves in full view. Looking more closely at two phytochemicals with yellow colours, lutein and zeaxanthin which are particularly concentrated in the retina and lens of the eye and may help protect you from age related macular degeneration and cataracts. Both these compounds are from the carotenoid family but unlike the alpha and beta carotene they don’t convert to retinol which is the active form of Vitamin A. However, in our typical western diets we tend to eat less of these extremely important phytonutrients. Dark green leafy veg have a host of other phytochemicals but foods such as kale, spinach, broccoli and courgettes amongst others contain good levels. Kale in particular is one of the highest and a green that many people don’t eat.
“So do as your mum always said… eat more greens!”
Smoking and alcohol can deplete the reserves of these compounds as does cooking your greens for too long which also reduces the levels of them. So eating greens just lightly steamed or even raw will ensure you don’t destroy them. Keep in mind that to absorb lutein and zeaxanthin from our foods we need dietary fat as they’re both fat soluble. So eating greens
with a drizzle of good oil or eating some fresh oily fish will aid in the absorption. So do as your mum always said… eat more greens! For more info on nutrition and health go to my website www.karendevine.co.uk In health, Karen

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
Released: July 3 Cast: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans Director: Marc Webb
Released: July 20 Cast: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway Director: Christopher Nolan
No, it’s not Spider-Man 4.
...another one ends.
For those of us not caught in the movie web, one of the biggest superhero cash-cows has been rebooted just ten years after Tobey Maguire launched the web-slinger to box-office acclaim.
It’s been one hell of a ride, but Christopher Nolan’s highly-acclaimed trilogy of the Caped Crusader will finally come to a close – with him ruling out any further entries in the director’s chair.
It’s already been unfairly slammed for being ‘too soon’ and a ‘Spidey movie for the Twilight generation’, but alas, early reviews (as we go to press) seem to be quite favourable.
Apparently the story comes full circle from Batman Begins, with a stellar cast that includes newbies such as Nolan’s Inception stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard, alongside regulars such as Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman.
The chemistry – reportedly off-screen as well as on-screen – of The Help’s Emma Stone, who stars as Gwen Stacy, and Brit actor Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), who dons the famous spandex, will undoubtedly play a big part in that – along with one of Hollywood’s hottest directors in Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer). Just like in 2002, they’ve gone back to the start with a different take on the origin story, as Peter Parker investigates the disappearance of his parents – which leads to a collision course with Dr Curt Connors (Welsh star Rhys Ifans), his father’s former work colleague, who later evolves into his reptilian nemesis, The Lizard. And as a new franchise begins...
There’s even rumours of Liam Neeson’s Ra’s al Ghul making a cameo in one form or another – flashbacks or otherwise. It’s been eight years since Batman (Christian Bale) took the fall for Two Face’s crimes, but when a new terrorist leader Bane (Tom Hardy) rises in Gotham, the Dark Knight – with Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman thrown into the mix for good measure – resurfaces to protect the city that’s branded him an enemy. One thing’s for sure, it should be one hell of an ending – and could just rival Avengers Assemble as THE superhero movie of the summer.

MAGIC MIKE
Released: June 29
Released: July 11
From Noel Clarke, the creator of Kidulthood and Adulthood, comes a rare occurrence – a British-based sci-fi horror movie. With a twist of Super 8 it sees Clarke and friends – including The Inbetweeners Movie’s Laura Haddock – try to fend off a mysterious predator in a confined building, unaware that a highly classified military plane has crashed in London leaving the city in lockdown.
After The Vow and 21 Jump Street it seems like audiences can’t get enough of Channing Tatum. This time he headlines Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s (Traffic) comedy-tinted drama – alongside Matthew McConaughey – about an experienced stripper who schools a young protégé (British actor Alex Pettyfer) in the fine arts of partying, picking up women and making easy money.

ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT Released: July 13 After the massive success of the third Dinosaurs-based film, Manny, Diego, Sid and co are back for more 3D cashing-in adventures – this time using an iceberg as a ship to explore a new world after their continent is set adrift. And if you thought they’d exhausted all the nut-loving antics prehistoric squirrel Scrat could undertake – you’d be wrong...
Some of the best British veteran talent – including Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith – stupendously launch this edition, as retirees residing in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (out now). John Carter (July 2) may be the biggest boxoffice misfire in quite some time, but it’s still a serviceable Mars-based action-adventure with Taylor Kitsch in the unenviable lead role. 21 Jump Street (July 9) on the other hand – starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum – was a beyond expectations, action-comedy hit based on the 80s TV series; while the impressively cast This Means War (July 2) with Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine, sadly fails to conquer. July 16 sees a clutch of new releases, as real-life NAVY Seals flick Act of Valour and Mark Wahlberg’s drug-smuggling Contraband tick the action-thriller boxes, and surprise – but sub-standard – horror hit The Devil Inside and Matt Damon’s heartwarming family flick We Bought a Zoo do likewise for their genres.

LEGO BATMAN 2: DC SUPER HEROES (360/PS3/WII/DS/3DS/PSV/PC) Just when you thought they’d milked the LEGO cash-cow to death – developers Traveller’s Tales pull a rabbit out of their hat. With the biggest ever open world environment, superb story and – for the first time ever – excellent talking characters this is undoubtedly the best LEGO incarnation ever, as Batman teams up with Superman, Wonder Woman and co. If you thought LEGO games were becoming like Kryptonite you’d be wrong – because with a new lease of life they’ve just soared to another level.
#####
LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW (PS3/360) If ever there was a game that’s style over substance – then this is it. If it was just down to the colourfully comic-book grindhouse styling, touches of comedic brilliance, violent excesses and a truly great rock n’ roll soundtrack – this zombie-based game would rip through the competition. But sadly there needs to be a game underneath and after the initial humour and vulgarity (walking round with her dismembered boyfriend’s head) of bimbo Juliet’s chainsawrevving, undead-massacring character wears off – you realise the action well, kinda, sucks.
#####
MARIO TENNIS OPEN (3DS) Out now Whether he’s saving the world, karting, partying, puzzling or sporting you always expect Mario-based games to be of an extremely high standard. Sadly, despite this still being a sound tennis game – with your favourite characters and solid-enough game engine – this has something missing that leaves it way short of greatness. The use of 3D seems to be an after-thought, with customisation and online options surprisingly limited – leaving this simply as a perfunctory but unremarkable effort that springs too many leaks.

DIRT: SHOWDOWN (360/PS3/PC) Like EA did with the Need For Speed franchise, Codemasters have shifted direction for this DIRT: Lite entry. After the highly-acclaimed previous racing versions, this has been scaled back with less on race events and more on carnage – particularly with the addition of destruction derbies. But with limited course selection, dumbed-down handling and too much emphasis on the online functionality the whole experience just becomes muddied. It’s still passable and intermittently enjoyable fare, but I’d suggest Codies just stick to what they do best with the series from now on.
#####
STARHAWK (360/PS3) Out now How this PS3 exclusive strolled onto the console with little fanfare is absolutely scandalous – because it’s one of the biggest surprises of the year. This western-in-space third person shooter-cum-aerial combat game is fantastic fun, with decent cut-scenes, above average shooting mechanics and novel ‘Build and Battle’ system that adds an element of strategy – particularly when you drop in gun turrets to defend your position. There’s a few rough-round-the-edges flaws, but with the addition of multiplayer this game has wings – and really shouldn’t be overlooked.
#####
SUMMER STARS 2012 (360/PS3/WII) Out now
Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviewing FIFA 12: UEFA EURO 2012
There’s always a few unlicensed games to jump on the Olympics bandwagon – and this Kinect-utilised effort does the basics right. But the trick is to use the controller and avoid the underwhelmingly rubbish Kinect functionality, then some sports – like the track events – along with the commentary and comedy London backgrounds makes this passable fare. Sadly some events like trampolining are just plain weird, making it a mixed bag that’s really for Olympic enthusiasts that don’t want to wait for the official title.
#####
FIFA 12: UEFA EURO 2012 DLC (360/PS3/PC) Out now
While Euro 2012 was in full swing, EA served up their traditional tournament offering – but refreshingly this version is download only. For owners of the excellent FIFA 12, the all-new Expedition mode will be added to your game, as will every UEFA nation not on the original. You'll also get the tournament's eight official stadia, the odd sound effect and a bit of graphical gloss – but when you get onto the field it's just FIFA reloaded. It’s pretty pricey DLC – but if you crave authenticity it’s a worthwhile purchase.

HOME Locally I will leave the Riverside Festival to the Stamford page but suffice to say it’s a cracking line up on July 7 and will be well worth a day of your time if you are over that way. On the other side of the city at the Plough in Farcet Fen there’s a festival of a different type with a great ethos of ‘beat the recession’! The Beat Festival is a three day electronic music fest on August 3, 4 and 5 and the guys behind it are putting on a cracking event for fans of this scene at a very decent price. Organiser Tony tells me – “For most music lovers, attending a festival is the highlight of the year… A weekend away with friends and great music.” Yup, I’d agree with that. “However, most festivals come with a big price tag to match and it doesn’t stop with the ticket cost… Alcohol, soft drinks, even food retailers all seem to take advantage of the captive audience they have, to the extent that attending a festival nowadays can be a major financial

There’ll be two custom built arenas, including a bespoke Funktion One ‘InfraBass’ system. Plus all the usual lights, lasers, visuals, stalls, chill out zones and the like. There’ll be over 80 international and local acts performing, with live PAs and DJs playing a full range of electronic music, including drum & bass, dubstep, grime, dub, hip hop, techno, J-Tek, hardcore, house, old skool, electro, psy trance and much more… There are no age restrictions on entry and families are welcome with under 10’s free of charge when accompanied by paying adults. OK, so you all know I’m more of a live music guy but for fans of this scene names like Slipmatt, Nicky Blackmarket and Meth & MC 2Shy amongst others should get your ears pricking. Find out all you need to know on www.beatfestival2012.webs.com or call the 24 hour credit card hotline 0844 870 0000. Over the other side of Stamford at Rutland Water on July 20 –22 you can lose yourself perfectly for a weekend with A Lost Weekend festival, yep that’s what it’s called, great line up too. Headlined by The Blockheads, Wilko
Johnson and The Hoosiers this is a heavyweight amongst festivals. You’ve also got Toploader, Eddie and The Hot Rods, Dodgy, Strangler Hugh Cornwell and The Selector. Yes folks, all these on your doorstep and set on the beautiful shore of Rutland Water, what more could you want? Well food and drink – don’t worry they have it covered by way of an international buffet of food stalls and fine local Rutland ales… pint of Rutland Beast? Don’t mind if I do. Want some trinkets and gifts? Yup they have loads of stalls to while away the day if you’ve had your fill of music and want a wander. So go on, get lost, the lot of you www.alostweekend.co.uk and it’s only £75 to get lost for the whole weekend (some day tickets available), a good deal considering the bands on show and it includes camping.
AWAY Well it’s Cambridge Folk Festival month, and what I was alluding to earlier is that this year will be my 20th year… do you know how old that makes me feel? I remember standing next to a
guy in 1991 and him telling me he had been coming to the festival for 18 years and I remember thinking ‘you old bugger’ – now that’s me! This year, the line up is as eclectic as ever but definitely with a more folk feel than the last few years. I know that may sound strange but CFF always pushes the boundaries beyond folk and then some. This year headliners are Clannad, Joan Armatrading and The Proclaimers with the sublime John Prine on Friday which is a mixture of styles on its own. Chuck into that mix Billy Bragg, Nanci Griffiths, Keb Mo and The Oyster Band and you start to get a feel of the festival. Another wise old soak asked once what I thought of the Festival, what was it really about? I said – “It’s not the bands you know, it’s the ones you don’t know that make the festival,” – suitably impressed he still didn’t buy me a pint! But it’s true, so I am looking forward to The Destroyers, the Mighty Doonans, Steamchicken and Pine Leaf Boys. You just don’t know what you’ll get and that’s what makes it fun. As always, old friends will be there and you just know it will all run like clockwork and the atmosphere will be bliss. It would be good to see a few of the old Peterborough faces there again, a lot of people ask of you, you know who you are! Tickets are still on sale, the old days of selling out in a mad rush are gone, they have the capacity now, so no excuses. All you need to know is on www.cambridgefolkfestival.co.uk it’s on July 26 – 29, book the time off work now!

Stamford CALLING THE TORCH HEADS TO STAMFORD Last month the town was buzzing due to a certain Royal visitor and the excitement continues throughout July. Now everybody’s attention turns to the Olympics with the Torch arriving in Stamford on Tuesday July 3 bringing a little bit of the Games to our town. You’ll get the chance to view the Torch’s progress along local roads but one of the main places to catch it will of course be Burghley House. The flame will change hands in front of the Elizabethan mansion in the presence of Miranda Rock, the granddaughter of former Olympic Hurdler David Cecil, Lord Burghley, who won a gold medal at the 1928 Games.

The Torch Relay will enter Stamford on Tuesday July 3, starting on Tinwell Road at 4.45pm, moving onto West Street, Scotgate, Red Lion Square, High Street, Brazenose Lane, St Leonard's Street, Wharf Road, High Street St Martin and finally heading along Barnack Road to Burghley House before rejoining the A1 for Wansford and up to Peterborough. It’ll then head through Marketing Deeping, Thurlby and Bourne on Wednesday July 4. To keep completely up to date visit www.southkesteven.gov.uk/olympics2012
Despite being ticketed this year it’s a not for profit event and organiser Jenny Collins told ESP – “It's great that we’ve been able to bring the Riverside Festival back to the Meadows, and while we can't guarantee the weather, we can guarantee a brilliant summer, feel good festival with a fantastic line up and great entertainment. So forget all your woes and come and join us for a fantastic day out with something on offer for everyone!"
The town’s leading music venue has another busy month with something for all tastes. The Riverside Festival’s official after party keeps the music flowing after hours at the Gravel Pit night on Saturday July 7 for free from 9pm. The Rock-a-hula guys have a great line up for psychobilly fans on Saturday July 14 with three bands playing. With Spook and The Ghouls, the Go Go Cult and Cowboy And The Corpse it’ll be a wild horror rock ‘n’ roll riot. Tickets £8 in advance, £10 on the door.
THE GREAT OLYMPIC GARDEN PARTY The arrival of the Torch will just be the start of Olympic linked fun in the town and at Burghley House. For those who want to watch the Olympics in a spectacular setting Burghley will be throwing The Great Olympic Garden Party every day during the London 2012 Games. With the Elizabethan House as the backdrop, the normally closed south gardens will host a big screen showing coverage from Saturday July 28 to Saturday August 11 (included for free with a normal house and gardens ticket).

MUSIC @ MAMA’S
There’s another big name lined up this month with none other than Irish guitar hero Pat McManus playing on Wednesday July 25. the former Mama’s Boys and Celtus star will be there with his band kicking out some great blues and rock that shouldn’t be missed. BATTLE PROMS It’s certainly a busy month at Burghley House and aside from all the great Olympic events there’s always time for a fabulous outdoor concert! This year’s Battle Proms takes place on Saturday July 7 with a special Jubilee theme featuring the Jubilee Gun Salute and classics such as Rule Brittania plus ground-shaking, breathtaking pyrotechnics and displays. Set out your picnic, sit back in your deck chair and enjoy a superb array of classical music guaranteed to make you wave your flags, sing out loud and maybe even waltz under the stars. Fingers crossed for the weather! www.battleproms.com
There’s a great array of bands and music for all tastes, family entertainment, circus workshops, story telling and poetry, a fabulous beer and cider festival (an event in itself!) food and retail stalls and loads of good stuff. The Riverside Stage will, as always, be providing the perfect soundtrack for your festival day, this year hosting your Road to Riverside winners: Welsh Hip Hop act Major Triadz. The music on the four stages is diverse and there’s too much of a packed programme to list here but visit the website for more and grab a programme on the day. The new Boomerang Stage will be providing exotic and eclectic delights for all, from pirate shanties to performances of kora playing (a kora is an African harp) to bluegrass, alongside the mellow sounds we know and love from the original Acoustic Stage it’s replaced. As the festival draws to a close the Riverside Stage headliners Killamonjambo will play out against a backdrop of a fantastic firework display by local company 1605 Fireworks. Sounds like a fitting close to what we hope will be a festival to remember. There are limited tickets this year so if you haven’t bought yours in advance get there early. Admission’s just a fiver for adults. ESP is pleased to support the Riverside Festival so we’ll see you there! www.riversidefestival.co.uk

WILLOW WAS A WINNER
Congratulations to everyone involved in organising and sponsoring The Willow Festival. It recreated the feel of the event that we all missed so much and brought us the promised variety of entertainment which proved very successful. The signs look good that it will return next year because it certainly didn’t lack for support on a beautiful May weekend.
My one suggestion for next year is for the organisers to publish the schedule of performers in advance.
Judging by some of the bands I’ve spoken to since The Willow, I also know that they all got a terrific buzz out of the audience that turned up to watch.
Thank you Willow Festival!
I know some people who would’ve gone to see their favourites but as they didn’t know when the band was scheduled, they didn’t go. That’s not to detract from a tremendous weekend.
BARKING GOOD MUSIC @ THE ANGEL When it comes to creating original names for local festivals, you’ve got to hand it to pub owners Nick and Diane Lander from the Angel Inn in Yarwell. Because in May they raised over £1600 for Everyman cancer charity with the Knobworth festival, and now at the end of this month they’re giving us the return of WOOFSTOCK. Yes you guessed it – a fundraising event for the Retired Greyhound Trust. Nick told ESP – “Because we’ve given a loving home to five greyhounds over the years, we know first hand what wonderful domestic companions they make and want to both promote the breed as a fantastic pet, whilst at the same time raising money for the charity.”
Since being taken over by the Simmonds brothers, the popular pub has, amongst other things, won the award of CAMRA Pub Of The Year and raised thousands of pounds for numerous charities. That’s all in addition to becoming a very busy music venue, featuring bands at least twice over the weekends. The Ploughman had been told that it would have to close down due to the redevelopment plans that had been submitted by Tesco to the council.
Over the two days, local musicians and bands will be playing live in the pub’s beer garden, and already scheduled to appear are Let There B/DC, Filthy Lucre, Kickback, Sir Scallyway, Lexi Green, Gone to the Dogs, Intwined, the Conspiracy Club, The Mangelics and We Sell Tigers.
The Simmo’s have fought a very long campaign to save the pub, and now that seems to have paid off, in the medium term at least. That’s because Tesco have offered a new lease to The Ploughman which could run for two to three years. The reason is not known but nevertheless, Andy Simmonds told me – “We were shocked but absolutely delighted when Tesco contacted us. It came completely out of the blue! It now gives us the chance to try to work with Tesco and the council to keep the pub as a vital part of the eventual redevelopment of Werrington Centre.”
All appearances will be accompanied by a real ale and cider festival complete with the obligatory BBQ. The fourth 4th annual Woofstock festival is taking place at The Angel Inn, Yarwell on July 28 and 29 For more info go to www.woofstock.co.uk.
We had The Nuggets playing live at lunchtime on ‘Keith & Claire’ on Radio Peterborough 106.2 FM in mid June, and they went down really well with the listeners. They played an improvised acoustic gig and it followed their success at The Willow Festival. They also revealed that they’re making a welcome return to the Peterborough Beer Festival this year. They’re supporting The Fab Beatles on the main stage on the big night – Saturday August 25. www.espmag.co.uk
I am so pleased to hear the news that The Ploughman pub in Werrington has been given a reprieve.

PLOUGHMAN PLOUGHS ON!
I and many others who’ve supported the effort hope that now there is breathing space. Then some compromise can be reached over the future of the pub. From the plans that I’ve seen, there have already been changes, so why not do it for the sake of the local community and local music fans? If you needed evidence of the worth of the pub you only have to look at the bill for The Ploughman’s Charity Beer Festival in early July.
They were lamenting that because of the top of the bill act, it means that they can’t do any Beatles numbers themselves, but their versatility will mean that the audience will hear some brilliant sixties music that night.
Friday 6 – Motor City Vipers
My guess is they’ll go down a storm feeding off a very enthusiastic crowd that will gather at the Beer Festival on the Embankment on the final night.
Sunday 8 (afternoon) – Easyersaid
I can’t wait, and there’ll be more about the scheduled music at the event in next month’s ESP.
There’s over 50 real ales and ciders and a German themed BBQ throughout the weekend and all proceeds raised will go towards the Rudolf Fund.
Saturday 7 (afternoon) – Amplified Saturday 7 (evening) – Replicas
Sunday 8 (early evening) – The Nuggets
