Perkins Great Eastern Run If you’re thinking about taking part in the 2015 Perkins Great Eastern Run on Sunday October 11 it’s time to get serious and step up the training. Easy done with free training evenings kicking off this month! You may recall ESP’s Darren Grigas recently completed the gruelling Marathon des Sables, the toughest footrace on earth,… while our reporter Mikey Clarke is, well let’s say a more ‘casual’ runner! They both know a thing or two about this half marathon though so whatever level you are, here are their training tips…

DARREN

MIKEY

As I write this I’m just days away from attempting a 69 mile run along Hadrian’s Wall (and hopefully completing it) so you’d think a half marathon should be a doddle right? Well kind of… The thing is, if you’re racing then you’re giving it everything you’ve got so it’s going to hurt whether it’s 5k or 100k but you alter your pace to suit the distance. Since I last ran the Perkins Great Eastern half marathon a couple of years back I’ve been running much longer courses such as 85 miles cross-country, 150-ish miles across the Sahara and a 40 mile obstacle race so a slower pace was needed in order to not burn out. For me this is a shorter race and I need to pick up my pace accordingly so I’m heading to the free training sessions at the Embankment’s Athletics Track to get some help. It’s put together with experienced runners and coaches who I’m keen to learn from as this year I have a special goal.

experience. I’m more than happy to learn from others to improve where I need to. For anyone wanting to improve their running I’d recommend getting down there for the added motivation and guidance that could make a huge difference to your training. The most common thing I hear from people talking about training is that they just don’t have time, yet we’re all guilty of spending hours looking at our phones or TVs. So don’t try to ‘find’ time, ‘make’ time, get that first foot out of the door and then make consistent forward progress week on week. No matter what level you’re at the toughest race you’ll run is the one you’re training for right now! So get to the track and get yourself some free coaching and make this your best run yet.

The last time my Dad raced the Great Eastern was in the 80’s, he was a smoker on about 20-a-day (smoking was cool back then) and I was a kid doing the fun run. He even had a fag on the start line as the start gun went off, he flicked it to the floor then went and ran a 1hr 36 halfmarathon, 3 minutes faster than my best time, and he likes to remind me of it too! So I’m hoping this could finally be my year to beat the old dude. This is where my training needs to change a little to suit the distance. I know I’ve got the stamina but I need to improve my speed again. The coaches at the free sessions will be a big help for people of all levels; either just starting out fresh from the couch or like me with a few bags of

Have you ever loved the thought of running a half marathon, but love eating kebabs more? I’m here to tell you that you can literally – OK, not literally – have your cake and eat it too. When training for the last Perkins Great Eastern Run I participated in, I promised myself that I’d give up junk food and go out running every night. I never made those changes, BUT I did complete the run nonetheless. You can too! “Hang on Clarkey, are you encouraging we eat fatty foods and that it won’t affect our fitness?” you may be asking. Not at all. Obviously, the better you eat and the more you run, the better the results you’ll see. I’m simply saying that it is possible for the average Joe to complete this 13+ mile challenge. When training for the run, although I still found myself a regular in the McDonalds queue, I didn’t go quite as often. I made small changes here and there. The best thing I did – which I highly recommend you do too – was to take part in the FREE training sessions put together by the city council. Before attending the first session, I feared I’d be surrounded by running professionals. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were a variety of fitness levels. There were those that looked like they’ve been running all their lives – and probably ran the distance of a marathon just to get to the training. But, there were just as many amateurs too – much like me. And personality wise, there wasn’t a division at all. Everyone was friendly, outgoing and shared the same goal of wanting to be better runners. The best thing about the training session was that the trainers split us into different groups if we wished. This way we could run at whatever speed and distance that we were happy with. So, get yourself signed up to the Perkins Great Eastern Run. If I can do it, anyone can. But most importantly, get yourself to those free training sessions. You won’t regret it.

ROY JONES JR COMING SEPTEMBER

ESP has dipped its toe into the transfer market and signed a safe pair of hands to steer our Posh page into the 2015/16 campaign. I first swapped runny-nosed school leaver Phil ‘Tango and Fruit Pastilles’ Adlam from the clutches of the Evening Telegraph in the late 1990s and signed him to the Posh press office. We worked together for a couple of years before Phil inherited my captain’s armband and with it went on a handful of loan spells to ESP. He made sporadic first team appearances from the bench and scored several own goals. But finally at the twilight of his ‘career’ we’ve managed to bag him as a free signing and Phil will make a monthly appearance in this Premiership publication whilst continuing to turn out for the Posh press office on a weekly basis in League One. Our partnership was reunited about six years ago when Lite FM was desperate for a formidable pairing to reignite their evening kick-off performances. But despite almost a full season of boosting the radio station’s listener figures, we were unable to successfully negotiate new contracts. Welcome aboard Phil. Let’s do a can of Tango soon.

LINDSAY GETS THE BIKE BUG! It’s always nice to get mail and even better when it’s from someone who’s just discovered the sense of freedom and excitement motorcycling gives you. Lindsay Smithdale is enjoying riding pillion on her husband’s lovely Triumph America and I bet it’s not too long before she’ll be putting in for her bike test… She wrote: ‘My husband, Richard, read your Harley review in last month’s ESP and he didn’t realise how much you’re into bikes. He bought a Triumph last year and I went to the recent MCN motorcycle show at Peterborough Arena to buy a helmet and jacket, so that we can go on rides together. I’m getting used to it but still find it a bit scary when it’s really windy. I can’t believe I’m becoming a biker chick! I never thought I’d get on the back of a motorcycle and even my husband is surprised!’

The boxing greats just keep coming to Peterborough thanks to promoter Kevin Sanders and next up is an evening with Roy Jones Junior on September 24 at The Solstice. Jones held world titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. He made history by being the only boxer to start his career as a light middleweight and go on to win the heavyweight title. In the 1990s Jones was named Fighter of the Decade by the Boxing Writers Association of America. The evening will consist of a pre-event photo opportunity, three-course meal, boxing memorabilia auction and a question and answer session with the former champion. For tickets call Kevin on: 07872 601467.

NETHERTON HAWKS IN EUROPE?

The event’s been staged with the aim of raising enough money for the under 12 team to enjoy an invaluable football development experience by playing matches in Holland, Germany and Belgium. I remember when I was at Posh I travelled to Florence with our under 10 team where they took part in a tournament against Europe’s elite and the experience our young players gained was priceless.

At the event there’s ample car parking, a fully licensed bar, barbecue, stalls, a car boot sale and lots of other family activities ranging from bubble football and bungee trampolines to face painting and a bouncy castle. Displays include Phoenix Gym Academy, Immortal Martial Arts team, DanzFusion dance crew and a record attempt at Zumba 250. Live music will be in the form of The Brays, Flashback Photograph, Velocity, The Tin Pigeons, Will Silver, Ben Callanan, CeCe, Sharna & Hannah and Meg McPartlin. For more info visit www.nethertonfestforall.co.uk or email info@nethertonfestforall.co.uk

Not only did they compete against the best teams in Europe that included Juventus, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, but the occasion also opened their eyes to a different culture on and off the field. Every second spent there was an educational journey for ten year-olds let alone would-be professional footballers. Interview

Our local hero is back and sounding good! Sharon McAllister catches up with Aston Merrygold as he prepares to Get Stupid… Since JLS broke many a pop fan’s heart when they decided to call it a day and go their separate ways, Peterborough’s quarter of that hugely successful X Factor boy band has been holed up in a studio in America. Now Aston Merrygold is back with a big new solo tune, Get Stupid, a big quiff and a big broad smile on his face. Not only that – he tells me he wants to perform in Peterborough!

“I think what’s going to be most amazing for me is hopefully when a tour comes together I’m going to be able to headline a tour with my name in lights, and in Peterborough you know. I remember when The Broadway was up and running and I watched Lemar there years ago, and when you’re going to know 90% of the crowd turning up to that gig it’s going to be amazing! “Somewhere along the line I think it’s destined to happen. I’ve done many events there and it’s never quite been Aston Merrygold on the front door but I think it’s destined to happen personally, and when it does it’s probably going to be much longer than most other shows around the world!” Great news for his hometown faithful if and when that comes off but firstly there’s a certain other gig in his sites this summer as he launches himself back into the music scene with his super-catchy, James Brown tinged, debut solo single Get Stupid. “I think V Festival is going to be amazing,” Aston tells me. “We never actually got to play that with JLS and now I’m going to be playing it for the first time on my own.” Having been part of the hugely successful JLS for so long Aston admits it’s nerve wracking heading out on his own and finding a new path. He’s been off the radar for nearly a couple of years spending

16

www.espmag.co.uk

much of his time since the band split, writing and recording in America – now he’s definitely got his groove on and is stepping back into the spotlight. “It was hard. When you’re doing something every day of your life, seven days a week with four people you all end up in that same mind set, you all think the same and act the same and that’s why it worked so well for us. A group mentality is amazing and that’s what I suppose every group has to aim for and tries to accomplish, but when you’re trying to find yourself and trying to become a solo artist and put your all into something, it needs to be all of you. All eyes are on you and everything has to come from you, if it’s to be believable. It was difficult but it was fun as well though, I got to redefine myself within myself.” So did he have to ‘de-JLS’ himself to find his own sound and decide what direction to head in as a solo artist? “It was not so much ‘de-JLS’ myself – I was part of JLS and part of that is always going to be within my music because that was me and I put my 25% into what JLS was. For me now it’s being able to hold the stage and a song by myself and hold a crowd and an audience by myself. It’s obviously a weird one because of what I was used to but for now it’s a new chapter and a new journey which is exciting.” Aston has been hard at work on his debut album Show Stopper set for release in October, but admits he needed to stay focussed when he was coming to terms with the end of JLS. “I’ve spent a lot of time with my family and friends and trying to, not get back to normality as such, but just stay level headed because it would be easy to get depressed

and get in a dark space if you’re in that kind of predicament with such a dramatic change in lifestyle, but it’s been great and everyone’s been so supportive around me and I’m just ready for the next chapter. “Of course I’m nervous, any performer anywhere in whatever situation you’re in is always going to be nervous. When releasing something that’s so personal to you, whatever genre you’re in whether it be music, sport, any line of entertainment or business world you always want to be the best in your field, you always want to be successful but this is mine now and people are hearing what I’ve been working on.” Aston was part of a bunch of young guns from the city like Louis Smith who all hang out and have remained close friends. It’s something he says is still really important to him no matter where his career takes him. “Yes literally saw them all over the weekend, they came down and we had a little night out and a day of football and just chilled. “No matter what we’re all doing we’re always going to be supportive – some people are in the spotlight, some people aren’t, we’re all just going to try and be successful and make our family’s proud and that’s our main goal.” And he remains fiercely loyal to Peterborough – “Yes of course, it’s my hometown, that’s where I’m from, that’s what made me who I am today and people I still love dearly are still there. I live in London now but I’m from Peterborough – you have to give props to where you’re from!” Aston’s debut solo single Get Stupid is released on July 17, check out the great video on YouTube, his debut solo album Show Stopper will be released in October.

So here it is folks – the fabulous results of all your fundraising! Take a look at the fantastic new Thorpe Hall Hospice…

Don’t put your fundraising feet up too soon though folks – there is still some way to go! They still haven’t quite reached the £6 million pound target, they need to provide a few more finishing touches and of course there’s the ongoing running costs of this vital service.

done a marvellous job but now they can deliver even better care for both patients and their families. There are now 20 new ground-floor patient rooms with en suite shower rooms. They’re painted in bright uplifting colours and each has access to the beautiful landscaped gardens. We were blown away by the look and feel of this incredibly well designed new unit.

We know because we’ve been proud to promote many of these events and fundraisers and been amazed at the efforts people have gone to. But just look at the results. ESP was invited along to see the new facilities and all we can say is – wow!

It will work alongside the old mansion house building which will now be used by office staff and provide the base for several new services including befriending schemes and hospice at home, with plans to turn the ground floor area into a community hub.

This new state-of-the-art facility built in the grounds of the fabulous historic Thorpe Hall site will transform the care this charity provides. The old building is a real city landmark but certainly wasn’t designed for the purpose it has served in recent years. Despite that the nursing team have

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire has been a big supporter of the cause with their Raise the Roof fundraising campaign and Paul Stainton broadcast his show live from the new hospice on its launch day to add to the celebrations.

Their next big fundraiser is the Starlight Hike on Saturday August 8 with a new format and a new distance. For those looking for a challenge there’s a 10km route taking in some of Peterborough’s prettiest parkland. For those keen to take the more leisurely option or maybe looking for a family challenge there’s a 5km circuit available. Both routes will start and finish at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough with the start scheduled for early evening so walkers return for their triumphant finish down Thorpe Hall’s stunning drive as the sun sets. The event’s open to all ages including children. It costs just £15 to enter with all entrants receiving a Starlight Hike t-shirt. Walkers are asked to raise £100 through sponsorship. STREET FOOD HAS JUST GONE BOHO! Street food is going from strength to strength with recognition by top chefs worldwide all serving up delicious international flavours. I caught up with Jeremy Smith who owns and runs Boho Street Food, a cool and quirky food van in the grounds of Peterborough Cathedral to find out what inspired him to give up a totally different career and set up Boho Street Food. Jeremy told me:“I’ve always felt inspired by visits to London and markets such as Camden. I wanted to bring a bit of this back to Peterborough. My mission is to serve up fast food that’s healthy and natural and so far so good!”

The ESP team loves a success story and it seems the Greyhounds Raceview Pizza and Pasta menu has taken off with a bang! We briefly touched on the restaurant back in May and now we are delighted that the ESP paparazzi crew could be there at the opening night and snap some of the action. The menu also looks delicious with dishes such as tomato and basil bruschetta, roasted mixed pepper penne pasta, meatball pizza and yummy tiramisu.

The menu includes a delicious range of wraps using a warm flatbread including flavoursome stuffings such as falafel, halloumi, chicken tikka and pulled pork. You can then wash it all down with fresh fruit smoothies which are made with 100% fruit! Jeremy and his street food van can be found serving up delicious food Monday to Saturdays from 11.30am – 2.30pm.

Leona Lewis Leona Lewis is all fired up to take on the charts with her new single under a brand new label‌

Last year the former X Factor winner caused a stir when she announced she was leaving Simon Cowell’s Syco label and now she’s back, beaming with a new sense of independence and strength. The girl with the powerful voice has found her girl power too it seems and has taken more control on the writing and recording process of her new album I Am than ever before and the passion shows through. It was last June when Leona shocked the industry with this statement marking the start of a new chapter in her remarkable career – “After seven incredible years at Sony I feel honoured to be given the opportunity to sign to perhaps the most iconic label of all, Island Records. To me Island has always been a place where artists can really flourish and are encouraged to express themselves. The first public airing of her new material was in April this year at an intimate showcase in London’s West End. Looking at ease and chatting comfortably between songs, Leona talked about the creation and inspiration of the tracks and media and music execs went wild over her performance. It seemed they were sensing she had truly found her own way in the music world. This star who made chart history as the first British female solo artist to debut at No1 in the US Billboard Album Chart has certainly suffered her ups and downs, revealing in an open letter to fans at one point – “It has been quite the roller coaster year. The emotions I’ve felt have been more powerful, in both a

positive and negative way, than any time I’ve ever felt in my life. “I chose to swim‌ I’m not sure where I’ll end up but one thing I’m certain of is I’ve stayed true to myself and I’ve followed what my heart says is right.â€? The decision was a tough one, she had left her record label, “Not knowing whether I was going to make another record again,â€? and she was writing songs without a specific aim other than the sole, pure purpose of making music again. Luckily, a chance encounter spurred her on when she was invited to a small Fleetwood Mac gig. She had never met them before but has always been a huge Stevie Nicks fan. A friend shoved her forward to meet the band for the first time and Nicks was quick to greet Leona. “She grabbed hold of me, hugged me and started singing my song to me. She sang Bleeding Love and then she was like: ‘You have to keep going, we need you, we need your music.’ She won’t know what a huge impression she made on me and how much she inspired me and inspired this record but she did give me that spur of encouragement. She is awesome. Everyone needs a Stevie in their life,â€? she laughs. The other big boost came from collaborator Toby Gad (John Legend, BeyoncĂŠ) who worked with Leona on her second album Echo. The music producer invited Leona to hang out with him even when she didn’t have a project lined up. They went into his studio in LA and started playing around and suddenly they were writing what would become the new album. Co-written by Leona and Toby Gad, her new single Fire Under My Feet is out now and we reckon it’s a winner! www.leonalewismusic.com

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

This month’s column is guest written by Mikey Clarke

Your mission... should you choose to accept it, is to go and check out one of the most exciting films of the year. The Mission Impossible franchise is one of those rare cases where the films get better with each instalment. Hopefully, Rogue Nation – the fifth in the series – will continue that pattern. The story sees Tom Cruise return as Ethan Hunt. With the IMF now disbanded and Hunt out in the cold, a new threat – called the Syndicate – soon emerges. The Syndicate is a network of highly skilled operatives who are dedicated to establishing a new world order via an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Faced with what may be the most impossible mission yet, Ethan gathers his team to try and put a stop to this deadly rogue nation.

One scene I’m particularly excited about is the one that brought Tom Cruise to Peterborough earlier this year. He was at RAF Wittering air base, hanging off the side of an aeroplane whilst soaring 5,000 feet in the air. Apparently, the possibility of Cruise falling to his death was not what made this stunt so death-defying. If a bird or a small stone was pushed through the plane propellers, they could have been hurled at the celeb with deadly force.

30

I can’t wait to see this stunt on the big screen – or the film in its entirety for that matter.

Early reviews of Inside Out from across the pond have been fantastic. With many critics describing it as “Pixar at its best”, it would seem that this is the film of the month to watch as a family. This animated flick focuses on Riley, who’s relocated from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions. With Inside Out, those emotions are actual characters – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters – the control centre – inside Riley's mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and

30

her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, chaos arises in the control centre. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school. With many of Pixar’s movies, I expect we’ll be battling with our own emotions whilst watching it – joy and sadness being the main ones.

MAGIC MIKE XXL On 3 July, expect to see far fewer females out an about in Peterborough. Chances are they’ll be in the cinema catching a glimpse of Channing Tatum taking his clothes off. Tatum returns as Mike, a retired stripper who reunites with the rest of the Kings of Tampa for a blow-out final performance in Myrtle Beach. On the road to their final show, with whistle stops in Jacksonville and Savannah to renew old acquaintances and make new friends, Mike and the guys learn some new moves and shake off the past in surprising ways.

LEGO JURASSIC WORLD (X1/PS4/360/PS3/WIIU/3DS/PSV/PC)

Just when you thought the world of Lego games were getting a little prehistoric – Jurassic World opens for business. Featuring all three original Jurassic Park films (from 1993-2001) and the record-breaking new Jurassic World movie, this child-friendly game lovingly recreates Spielberg's universe in brick-building form – with the trademark Lego gameplay and humour.

####

It's hard to argue that the Lego gaming concept is getting a touch stale, but with such iconic T-Rex and Raptor-fuelled scenes included in this package – this takes a giant bite out of previous Lego gaming competition. Gavin Miller

10 TED 2 For those who never saw the 2012 hit comedy Ted, it’s about a teddy bear that came to life after his owner, John Bennett, made a childhood wish for it to happen. Don’t be fooled though – it’s no family fairytale. Ted is rude, crude and very funny. In this sequel, newlywed couple Ted and his human companion Tami-Lynn want to have a baby, but in order to qualify to be a parent, Ted will have to prove he's a person in a court of law.

Destiny's second major expansion improves the world of Activision's impressive open world shooter for die-hards. 'The Reef' opens up for business as Destiny adds new story missions – making it particularly appealing for PvE players this time round – multiplayer maps, new co-op strike and Crucible elimination modes, and the all-new event arena, The Prison of Elders.

####

The game will still polarise the community – and this might not add enough to entice naysayers back with its fairly steep add-on price – but fans will find this essential to this ever-expanding universe. Gavin Miller

LOUIS GOES POSH! Anna Ruggiero catches up with golden boy Louis Smith MBE to find out about his new local venture, winning gold (obviously) and what’s next for our lad. brainer – we have been taking the world by storm since then.”

The team at ESP, and especially me, were curious as to how Louis got involved in such a cool venture. Apparently it stemmed from an old friendship with Andy, the owner of Posh Spas, a free hot tub, a tweet and a trip to America! “I have known Andy for years and I went to school with his sons,” Louis told me. “When I first started building my house, he asked if I wanted a hot tub but I couldn’t really afford it so he offered me a free one on the basis I sent a tweet about it! Then Andy started thinking, like his brain does, that we could do a venture together.” Louis then travelled stateside to meet with Cal Spas and the result was a Louis Smith Signature range of hot tubs. “With the obvious benefits of hydrotherapy and as I’m a competing athlete, it was a no

“It felt amazing! It’s been a bit of a journey, to get back to where I need to be, stopping and starting with breaks, but I’m in a really good place and I’m enjoying training – not the pain so much but it’s going really well.” Apart from being back in the gym he’s still frequently on our TV screens recently appearing in Murder in Successville and countless TV panel shows. It’s wonderful to see Louis doing so well and it amazes us how he manages to juggle such a busy schedule with a calm and focused attitude.

Photos: www.andrejamesphotography.co.uk

It’s been a busy time for Louis, the one-man whirlwind who’s taken the celebrity, but more importantly, the sports world by storm. Not one to shy away from a new venture, Louis now has his own signature spa range working in collaboration with Posh Spas based in Hampton, Peterborough.

Louis is familiar with ‘taking the world by storm’ and his amazing career now spans bronze and silver Olympic medals and now a European gold medal for his first love, gymnastics. Having bagged a well-deserved gold at the 2015 European Gymnastics Championships we couldn’t wait to congratulate him.

“I take it all in my stride, there is going to be a point when I’m not going on the BAFTAS and Celebrity Juice, or going for luxurious meals and it all calms down, so I just enjoy it whilst I can! “The energy side? I eat well and have the right amount of sleep – but it’s a juggling act! Combining working with a full time sport is tough and sometimes you don’t get a day off but then sometimes I will get three days off, it’s just

the way it all works out. Mum’s still there supporting me too and she still even drops me down at the train station!”

charms of his girlfriend, the beautiful Lucy Mecklenburgh. But does he find it hard having a relationship in the spotlight? Of course not!

Louis’ love for his mum Elaine is evident and she’s been a pillar of strength throughout his career. It’s a real charm of his that he appreciates Elaine’s support and how lucky he’s been to have the opportunity to compete at a sport he loves.

“It’s not hard at all really; if you don’t want to be in the spotlight, don’t step in it.”

“I was very lucky as I had a mother that was very supportive and she would sacrifice every luxury she had to give to me and my brother – we were very lucky and obviously a lot of people aren’t in that situation.” His matter of fact attitude to stardom is very appealing and it’s easy to see how our local lad has won an army of adoring fans and not to mention the

There are several things that deserve iconic status. Among them are Walls Funny Feet, Maria Whittaker and Bagpuss but perhaps the most legendary of them all is the Mini. And I’m talking about the Mini John Cooper Works. The latest JCW is the hottest most powerful Mini ever built and thanks to Man About Town sponsors Sycamore Mini I got up close and personal with one that presented herself in a little black dress with red accessories. It was a steamy weekend encounter and we should’ve booked a room. This car is more stockings and suspenders instead of your everyday tights. It’s pulsating, addictive and makes you do naughty things. The JCW is the girlfriend your mum doesn’t approve of and your dad wishes he met 40 years ago. After putting more than 100 miles on her I begged

34

for one last ride but my time was up. All I have is vivid memories of what was an infectious time together and here’s how she stirred my senses…

LOOKS #### The Mini has always been about curves. Although I’ll always be a fan of the petite Kelly Brook-like original, the post 2001 Minis are more, shall we say, Kate Winslet. This means the modern Mini still rates high in the eye candy stakes but she’s matured from a size 8 into a 12.

www.espmag.co.uk

PERFORMANCE ##### This car is deceivingly quick. Her vital statistics read 0-62 mph in a smidgen over six seconds and a top speed of 152mph. The two-litre turbocharged engine is a technological masterpiece, which develops 232 bhp and enough torque to raise the Titanic.

HOTTER T

And what makes the JCW even sexier is beefed up

A MINI

arches, tidy lines and a perfectly formed centred twin exhaust. Bingo wings are nowhere to be seen and there’s a multitude of vents to remind you she means business.

Pep Cipriano

engine growl with the gear paddle shifters that sit neatly behind the rim of her chunky steering wheel. Rapid up-shifts were accompanied by a gravelly, crackling note from the exhaust and this sound of unadulterated pleasure became a bad influence at every set of traffic lights I came across. I never took her out of sport mode and that’s because this car wasn’t made to be driven in any other setting. She was a very naughty girl and had me under her spell and surrendering my licence would have been so easy to do. But I fought the temptation and won, which means I’ll get to drive the manual version set to be launched later this year.

EQUIPMENT ##### I was so wrapped up with the seductive driving experience the JCW gave me that I didn’t give much thought to the myriad of bells, whistles and gizmos this car comes with. She’s kitted out with so much technology that I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a button ready to make you a cup of tea if you asked it to. In terms of driver aids you get stuff like dynamic stability control, traction control and electronic differential control – all I’m sure that contribute to her planted and confident handling.

Within minutes of being out on the road you appreciate how this car was built to ensure an optimum driving experience. Every component is perfectly hooked up to complement one another and the result is a confidence inspiring hot hatch that makes light work of gobbling up tarmac at break-neck speeds. Being an old school manual driver, I was a bit sceptical of the six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox at first but within a few miles I began to relish it. Leave it in automatic and the gear shifts are smooth and consistent. It’s a bit like winning the lottery and employing a butler – everything is done for you but you forget what it’s like to be in control. But I like to take charge and chose to give my hands something to do by dictating her every

Then there are quirky touches like an optional mini screen that comes out of the dash at the flick of a switch and displays your speed and gear selection. You can also choose the shade from a rainbow of colours that you’d like the main dial and door trim edges to be illuminated in. The standard and optional extras the JCW comes with really give it the edge over its competitors. I just wish I had more time to play with her buttons.

VERDICT ##### The JCW is a beautifully engineered hot hatch that on one hand is happy skipping down to the corner shop for a pint of milk and on the other will tear your underwear off with her teeth and drag you along to the back roads for a thorough spanking. She’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing and she knows it.

CLASSIC PAIR AT LOCAL SHOWS We’re well into the summer classic car show season and my first outing was at the recent Yaxley Classic Car Show at the Three Horseshoes Event Field where I fell in love with two beauties. These Fiat 500’s were in fabulous condition and while the white one is for sale, the owner of the yellow one has no intentions of parting with his pride and joy especially after it came runner-up as best car at this show. Both cars were going to be showing at the Bourne Classic Car Show, which took place on Father’s Day. It was the 10th anniversary of the Bourne show and it’s always one of my favourites to be at. Another well-organised and popular event is the Baston Car and Bike Show (July 5) and this year’s theme is Back to the Future. Vehicles from both eras of the film – the 1980s and the 1950s – will be on display including the one and only DeLorean DMC-12. Best of all there’s a chance to win a ride in the car after the show. Now in its sixth year, the event is one of the biggest automotive shows in South Lincolnshire with over 650 vehicles on display in 2014 and it looks set to be even bigger this year with more than 15 dealerships from both mainstream and luxury manufacturers already confirmed including Sycamore Harley-Davidson, Vindis Audi, TC Harrison Ford, Sycamore BMW, Donalds Mazda, Marshall Volvo, Marshall Peugeot, Jardine Lancaster Lexus, Jardine Lancaster Toyota, Unity Mitsubishi/Subaru/SsangYong, Marshall Honda, Sycamore Mini, Robinsons Volkswagen, Robinsons Citroen, Marshall Vauxhall, FP Smith Hyundai, Wings Skoda and Boongate Kia! This event has something for everyone and cars and bikes aside, entertainment is in the form of live bands, a full bar with real ales and a barbecue and picnic area.

BEING

Less is more! ESP nutritionist Karen Devine says it’s time to quit the overeating habit. If I asked if you practiced Hara Hachi Bu you may well think it’s a new martial arts or dance craze hitting the gym floor. However it’s one that you want to sit up and take notice of as it might just give you a boost to health particularly your digestive health, improving energy/vitality or even helping lose a extra few pounds with very little effort. Caught your attention? Then read on.

So what is Hara Hachi Bu? It is an Okinawan (Japanese) practice of eating until you are 80% full which helps to avoid overeating. It is one discipline that I have tried to practice over the years. Today we eat too much food that we simply don’t need. We pour down so much of it and eat mindlessly that we don’t even know we’ve done it until afterwards when we find ourselves stuffed, bloated, sleepy and more. These are not indicators to say we’re nourished, it’s quite the opposite – it’s a cry for help from the body in particular the gut as it gets the full force of this! The traditional Okinawan’s way has passed on this discipline of eating along with a diet rich in antioxidants, they can boast the world’s highest proportion of centenarians (those who’ve reached 100 years and over). Those Okinawan’s who eat in the way of the western diet (too much food, excess calories etc) haven’t shown the longevity nor can they boast the health the traditional followers can. It takes time for the stomach to stretch which then sends signals to the brain via hormones and neurological signals that say we are full and sated. This natural feedback mechanism is said to take about 20mins so when we bolt down food we

38

www.espmag.co.uk

don’t give this natural mechanism time and are then prone to overeating until the first signal we get is ‘stuffed’! Eating until you are sated or just full is an art that can become the norm if you begin to practice this with everything you eat. Like all disciplines it takes time and a little effort, so you may want to start with the food you’re having today, even just one meal, notice when you’re feeling full. If you’re used to eating huge meals, or that you’re eating a highly processed diet, dehydrated and completely out of sync with your own body’s natural rhythms then it’ll take more time. Also question if you’re not thirsty instead of naturally hungry. Start by checking in with your stomach when eating a meal, it takes a few meals to get used to the true feeling of being naturally satisfied than unnaturally stuffed – very different feelings, we were simply not taught this so our natural mechanisms that tell is if we are full or not are out of tune so it does take some time. So much energy is taken up in digestion, I’ve written about and taught about the virtues of fasting, cleansing, eating more nutrients but less food for 15 years and I do practice what I preach, particularly the art of Hara Hachi Bu, we simply

don’t need the amount of food we currently eat today. Less can be beautifully more. N.B the advice above is where you are in generally good health with maybe a few pounds to lose. If you have high BMI or are attending weight/obesity clinics and are under the guidance of your GP/Consultant then please take advice from them first. In health Karen Devine

After sell-out performances on his 2014 tour Pete Firman ‘the UK’s leading comedy magician’ (Time Out) hits the road again with his astonishing new show. Expect Pete’s trademark blend of crowdpleasing comedy and jaw-dropping magic. He’s joined by Mike Wozniak, as seen in Channel 4’s Man Down, the wandering minstrel of showbusiness previews a tale from the road. A short time ago, at a theme park far, far away... local actor Warwick Davis made his latest appearance at Star Wars Weekends 2015. Started in 1997, and held every year in Orlando, Florida at Disney's Hollywood Studios park, the event brings together the fun and adventure of the Star Wars universe with the magic that only a Disney Park can bring. It’s a unique fan experience and as the force is strong in my family, I made the trip over with my wife and our two Padawan

sons during the half-term holiday. We had an amazing time and it was fantastic to see how well loved Warwick is by American fans. He received a rapturous welcome when introduced on stage, at the autograph sessions and a standing ovation for his live show 'An Ewoks Tale' at the park’s Theater of the Stars. THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

Photos: Joe Dent / www.theposh.com

As regular readers of this column will probably be aware, Neil Gilby is no longer in charge of this page, so you can breathe a huge sigh of relief that you’ll no longer see multiple pictures of our new kit man showing off his multiple tattoos. And, as an extra bonus, you’ll very rarely have to put up with pictures of me either!

However, just because you won’t see much of me, doesn’t mean that you won’t be treated to exclusive content, made especially for this long-standing publication. During the close-season, many supporters and readers probably think employees of football clubs have a plethora (you definitely know this is not Neil writing this column now) of holidays. That is not the case and it is not the case for some of the players too.

I spent time with Jack on what’s been his daily routine for many months and you can see just how hard he’s working to ensure he makes a full recovery. At the age of just 21, he’s been through arguably one of the most serious injuries a player can sustain. He ruptured his ACL in his knee, sustained damage to three out of the four ligaments, had cartilage removed and had work done on his hamstring tendon.

Defender Jack Baldwin has had a tough year. The highly-rated centre back suffered a serious knee injury in November 2014 and is not expected to return to first team action until around October at the earliest. So while some players have been jetting off to all corners of the world, Jack’s been getting up early to continue his rehabilitation either with club physiotherapist John Chatfield, or on his own in the gym.

Yet, Jack always seems to have a smile on his face. “Don’t get me wrong, it’s been tough. However, you have to remain focussed and you have to realise that there are a lot more people out there going through tougher battles. I’ve had a long road from when I sustained the injury back in November of last year to where I am now.

It can be a challenging time. The perception of footballers is that they have the perfect life. Big wages, big houses and big swimming pools, but whilst that may be true in the Premier League, within the Football League times can be tough and when you’re unable to get onto the pitch to do the thing you love, there are mental challenges to overcome.

44

www.espmag.co.uk

“I am out on the grass now and that is the next chapter. I’ve tried to break it down into different chapters to keep me mentally strong. There hasn’t been much time for a holiday this summer; I’ve been fully focussed on the rehabilitation. Maybe I will reward myself with a good family holiday next year,” Baldwin told me. Of course, serious injuries aren’t just

a physical challenge to overcome. Mentally it can have an effect on everyone close to the player. Jack and his partner Victoria have a young daughter and when he found out the severity of the knee problem, it was hard to bring the family up to speed. “It’s been tough for everyone. I found out the full extent of what I had done on my Dad’s birthday and we were actually all out for a meal with my Mum, Dad, sister, her fiancé, Victoria and the baby and it didn’t sink in until a few days after just how long the road to recovery would be.

what it’s like until it happens, but medical science has moved forward a lot in the last few years. Theo Walcott has come back from a similar injury and he’s arguably better now than before so I have to use that as my inspiration.

“You can never prepare for a serious injury.” “Myself and Victoria had a routine every week. We knew that everything was geared towards the Saturday and then after the game we could enjoy the weekend, but that’s changed now and every day has been a day to try and get fit. She’s been fantastic, as the whole family have during this time. “You can never prepare for a serious injury. You’re never going to know

“I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now. I’m outside, I’m coming towards the end of my rehabilitation, but I can assure you that day, when I return, it will be like Christmas Day, my birthday, New Year, Easter and everything rolled into one because I’ve known nothing else but to kick a football around and to be out for a year competitively has been so hard.”

MUSIC FEST @ THE BELL Photo: Tracy Slater

The Bell Inn at Weston Hills is holding its annual Music Festival and BBQ on Saturday July 4.

STEAMIN’ BLUES CALLS IT A DAY IN STYLE Steamin’ Blues. What a night for the final whistle. After fourteen years of fundraising for The Nene Valley Railway, local bass player, Colin Hodgkinson, assembled a great band for the evening playing to a sell out crowd. Colin is currently a member of rock legends Ten Years After and he brought their guitarist Marcus Bonfanti to Wansford along with fellow ex Backdoor Too members Rod Mason and Paul Robinson. Add the unique Zoot Money and you have the recipe for an incredible evening – and it was!

Weston Hills is just outside Spalding and would make a great day out, especially with food and drink available throughout the whole event. The line-up this year is very impressive and it all starts at 2pm and ends at 10pm. The bands and artists performing are: Bubba Rumone, Shayla Motley, Crimson Tale, Harsh Road South, Em Youngs, Meg Mcpartlin, The Sound Injectors and Kindred. Co organiser Dean Fitchett told ESP – “Since 2008 this free to enter outside event has attracted hundreds of music fans and musicians to this friendly country pub. The festival is organised by The Bell Inn and The Sound Injectors. Music fans talk about the event all year and comment on the high quality of the bands and the sound system, so we can’t wait for this year’s Festival to get underway.” The event is raising funds for the Butterfly Hospice, a very important local charity.

NUMAN & IDOL TRIBUTES

Each decade of music has a very distinctive feel to it and each decade produces icons. Two such icons from the 80s are Gary Numan and Billy Idol. Tributes to both are featured at The PSL Club on Lincoln Road on Friday July 10.

For me, the undoubted highlight of the evening was a ‘guitar duel’ between Colin on bass and Marcus on lead during their rendition of a Ten Years After blues classic, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl. It was exhilarating to watch two masters facing each other and improvising.

This is part of an 80’s tribute night featuring Pat Martin with a tribute to Gary Numan followed by a tribute by Paul Stone to Billy Idol. Paul appeared as Billy on Stars in their Eyes and won Best Tribute Act in Tenerife in 2008. The evening will also include an 80’s rock show by Paul featuring songs from INXS and Whitesnake and an 80’s electro show by Pat featuring music from Visage and OMD.

A memorable night. It is a special event in a unique setting. Please reconsider. We don’t want the final whistle – we want more Steamin’ Blues!

You can see both artists at work on YouTube and get tickets for the gig on 07900 225062.

WOOFSTOCK FEST IS BACK!

48

www.espmag.co.uk

The annual Woofstock Festival is taking place at The Angel Inn Yarwell on Saturday July 25 and Sunday July 26. Woofstock is the brainchild of the Angel’s owners, Nick and Diane Lander who’ve raised massive funds for local charity, The Retired Greyhounds Trust. At least 10,000 greyhounds retire from racing in Britain every year at an average age of just 3 years. The Retired Greyhound Trust is dedicated to finding loving homes for greyhounds when their racing days are over. Nick and Diane have given a home to greyhounds as pets themselves, and this is the seventh year that they’ve held Woofstock at the very popular Yarwell pub. Over the previous six years they’ve raised just over £12,000 for the Trust and they have again organised a very tempting weekend.

Local musicians and bands will be playing live in the pub’s beer garden, accompanied by a real ale and cider festival and BBQ. Although the complete list awaits final confirmation, those already set to play include Lexie Green, the Lava Lamp Lighters, Rocket Dogs, The Steradents, March to the Grave, Yarwell & Nassington Brass Band, Overspill, Fat Weasle and Beachy Head Diving Club. That’s what I call variety of music! The weekend will be compered by DJ, Jim Boulton and is free to enter. But Nick and Diane are asking that attendees consider bringing a can of food or bag of dog biscuits to enable them to pass on to our local dog-homing charity. For more info see www.angelinnyarwell.com. It’s always good fun and a worthwhile visit.

HOMETOWN ROCKERS GET TOP AWARD Huge Congratulations to The Hometown Rock and Roll Band who’ve just been recognised with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2015. This is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities. The band have earned the award because during a period of over 30 years they’ve raised in excess of £300,000, which has all been given to local charities and worthy causes. The band evolved from members of The Mick Lemmon band and The Dynatones and the line up over the years has been singers Pete Glover and Dave Cupit, Geoff Lovell and Stuart Smith on guitars and vocals with Jack Thomas on bass and Graham Seal on drums. Together they achieved the staggering sum raised by performing sell out gigs a few times each year. Geoff and Graham represented the band attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May where they met the Queen and other winners of this year’s award. The band will receive the award from the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire at the Town Hall on July 22. Sadly one member of the band, Stuart Smith, passed away just

73 Montagu Road, Peterborough Tel: 01733 705009 www.automobilelocksmith.co.uk

before the award was announced after a long battle with cancer. Geoff Lovell told me –“Stuart knew of the nomination but sadly not of the award, and he would have been so proud that we have been honoured in this way.” So was the nomination a surprise to them all? Geoff told me – “It was totally unexpected. Obviously it wasn’t something we ever thought about but we always aimed to raise money for local causes and it’s really humbling to know that others have thought to put us forward. The process and secrecy is the same for this group award as it is for the individual Birthdays Honours so it’s been difficult keeping the news away from everyone until the official announcement.” So will The Hometown Rock and Roll Band do another gig? Apparently there is a possibility of a reunion in order to commemorate Stuart. Watch this space! I hope they will decide to do one more but irrespective of that and on behalf of all the causes and people who’ve benefited and from the fans of their music: Thank you Hometown Rock and Roll Band. You ALL deserved your award! www.espmag.co.uk
