SERPENTINE GREEN IMPROVEMENTS
The team behind Serpentine Green have unveiled further plans to modernise the popular shopping centre, off the back of the current extension already underway near Next. With a ÂŁ45 million transformation due to get underway at the food court end of the centre, shoppers can expect a lot more out of future shopping sprees there. The planned developments include new leisure attractions, extra restaurants and cafĂŠs, plus an outdoor town square area, completely redeveloping the rotunda. As well as offering a better shopping experience, the proposal also hopes to generate around 240 new jobs. Since opening in 1998, little has changed at the centre, so these new ideas will hopefully give it a fresh new feel. If the planning is approved, building work could start as early as next year. Keep updated on www.serpentinegreen.com.

“Happy Birthday to Brew… Happy Birthday to Brew…”
Since the birth of ESP Magazine we have always been a part of the popular annual event and we couldn’t be more proud to see it still going strong after all this time. We've run numerous quizzes at the festival and one year we even teamed up with Oakham Ales, who brewed us our very own ESP beer. We’re also involved in the Beer Judging, which ultimately crowns the champion ale! This year (August 22-26) they hope to be featuring a Gin Bar which will complement their usual array of 400+ real ales, 80+ ciders and perries, English wines and continental
bottled beers. Also, to celebrate the 40th year of CAMRA beer festivals in Peterborough, they’ll be extending their opening times on both the Friday and Saturday until 11.30pm – which will enable us festival visitors to enjoy a truly memorable August Bank Holiday weekend. To celebrate the 40th anniversary, we need your help to create a special edition of our Paparazzi page. We’re looking for pictures of you with your friends and family, taken at the Peterborough Beer Festival at some point during the last 40 years – and any stories behind them! Here’s one of me on the dodgems getting in the festival spirit – not that I encourage drink driving! By sending us your photos, you’ll be put into a draw to win 4 tickets to the festival and you may just see yourself in next month’s ESP Magazine. So, get digging and email your pictures to office@espmag.co.uk by Monday July 19.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Cast: Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr Director: Jon Watts
After spinning an exhilarating cameo web through Captain America: Civil War last year – Tom Holland’s teenage webslinger now gets a solo outing. Sony – which owns the rights to Spidey – have teamed up with Disney’s Marvel Studios in this combined studio partnership, that follows Peter Parker’s attempts to balance high school life and his alter-ego crimefighting superhero career as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. But despite being under the watchful eye of Robert Downey Jr’s mentor Tony Stark/IronMan, everything Peter holds most important – including his Aunt May (Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei) – becomes threatened by the emergence of a new villain known as The Vulture (Oscar-nominee Michael Keaton).
Expect appearances from the likes of Bokeem Woodbine’s Shocker – who utilises modified gauntlets from nowdeceased villain Crossbones from Civil War – and a cameo from Chris Evan’s Captain America, as this will undoubtedly tie the wallcrawler into next year’s appearance in the third Avengers blockbuster outing.

ALL EYEZ ON ME Despite some scathing reviews – and a Twitter rant from 2Pac’s friend Jada Pinkett Smith claiming some elements to be falsified – this biopic of legendary rap artist Tupac Shakur has done noteworthy business Stateside. THE NVR – 40 YEARS OF MEMORIES
director John Glen, and production designer Peter Lamont. Both had worked at the NVR for Octopussy with Peter returning in 1995 for GoldenEye, and a Val Kilmer film in-between called Top Secret. ESP’s Marc Hernandez had been asked to help by Sarah following his interview with her in ESP’s May issue and said: “When Sarah found out I was a huge James Bond fan, she asked if I could help her arrange for a few guests from the films to come back. The sad news of Roger Moore passing away the previous week meant I really didn’t expect anyone from the original film crew to be able to come. Roger was a dear friend to both Peter Lamont and John Glen so the fact they came back to be
Royal Scot Locomotive at Wansford station This year sees the Nene Valley Railway celebrate 40 years since officially opening in 1977. Throughout the year the NVR team have been marking four decades of railway preservation with a fantastic year long programme of events for visitors which continues over the summer. On Thursday June 1, forty years to the day since the first train officially set off on the tracks of the NVR, it was the turn for railway staff and members to celebrate with a private party attended by local dignitaries and ESP also went along. There were also four VIP guests from the James Bond film family to remember the railway’s starring role in two Bond films. Octopussy (1983) and GoldenEye (1995). Director John Glen, Production Designer Peter Lamont along with Carole Ashby and Alison Worth, two of the Bond girls who starred as Octopussy circus girls.

ESP’s Marc Hernandez joined the 40th celebrations at the Nene Valley Railway and brought some Bond heroes to the party…
Parkinson gave a short speech to the assembled guests saying – "The main stars today though are the people who in 1977, first having re-built the railway from the basic condition left by British Rail when the line was closed, set out to start to run the passenger services. “We are really here today, to celebrate the last 40 years of this railway and in particular the people who have worked tirelessly to keep it in operation, enabled its development and allowed this celebration to be possible." Passengers then boarded a specially chartered train, hauled by visiting locomotive Royal Scot whilst being served a buffet lunch in stylish picnic hampers and sharing some happy memories. As part of the 40th Anniversary Celebrations Ferry Meadows Station was officially renamed Overton, which was the station’s original name when it first opened in 1854 and in recent years has been a hub of volunteer activity. Much of the construction and transformation work has been carried out by the NVR’s youth group aged between 13 and 18. Under the guidance of station master Phil Marshall and Justin Fletchter Hawkins, the class of 77 saw how the class of 2017 will continue their ongoing legacy. NVR’s General Manager Sarah Piggott made a short presentation to James Bond film
A few days after the event Marc received a lovely message from John Glen saying: "It was a pleasure to return to the Nene Valley Railway after 35 years. All the wonderful volunteers, like myself looking a bit older, but still as enthusiastic as ever. The passing of Sir Roger Moore the previous week was very sad and it was touching to remember him and all the volunteers who are no longer with us honoured by a minute’s silence. “I remembered asking Roger to be filmed under the carriage as it entered the tunnel. He gave me a long hard look and said, ‘I will if you join me!’ “I explained that I was trying to keep the weight down on the rig under the carriage but he was not

part of the 40th celebrations was a real class gesture on their part. “We presented them with a montage of Octopussy film posters that I’d had signed by around 40 of the NVR volunteers who’d been involved in the filming.” Marc added: "Sarah and her team did an incredible job organising the whole day, and I’d encourage all ESP’s readers to pay a visit to the NVR over the summer events. Don’t just wait until Christmas! There’s a programme of events every weekend, so let’s all do our bit to help the NVR celebrate 40 years as one of our top local attractions."

Yes, you read the headline right. City club owner Steve Jason is giving free entry to the Sugar Club sessions at the Met Lounge to anybody aged 18 to 20 if they arrive before 11pm. And if you get there before 10pm he’ll personally give you £5 to spend at the bar! Steve once bought me a beer, which is unheard of and now he’s prepared to hand out cash like sweets. This is something I’d actually pay a fiver to see! But in all seriousness the last thing I want to see my good friend Steve do is throw around notes and go out of business. Steve is now a rare breed. He’s an oldie but a goodie. He hails from an era when the likes of S&M Entertainments, Steve Allen, Mark
CIAOS OUT 14 www.espmag.co.uk
Goodliffe and of course Steve himself were effectively young promoters, DJ’s and entrepreneurs. They, in their late teens and early 20’s, identified gaps in the clubbing market that were not being catered for by the city’s mainstream venues. In response, they started promoting their own specialist nights for the then new generation of 18 to 21-yearolds. Today, this is a missing generation of clubbers and Steve’s bidding to try and encourage them to get out and see what they’re missing before ‘clubbing’ as I remember it, becomes a social pastime that’s lost forever. Steve told me: “I’m basically going to pay young people to come to my club. I’ve got a 200-capacity venue and I’m well aware that if everyone turns up between 9pm and 10pm it’ll cost me £1,000 a night in lost revenue this summer, but I believe it’s a gamble worth taking. We have to motivate the next generation of music fans to come out and create their ‘scene’ like their parents did before them. “It’s a nationwide problem. People aged 18 to 21 are going to big festivals around the UK and discovering new bands and music, but when they return to their hometowns they’re
not going to clubs or pubs. The average age at our club on a Saturday night is probably mid 20’s and they’ve been coming here for several years and still enjoy the ‘alternative’ scene. But we need to be seeing the 18 to 21 year-olds who’ll influence the next generation with their taste in new bands. “In the 80’s and 90’s we had clubs with capacities of around 3,000 people and they were full every weekend. That young generation are today in their 40’s and 50’s and are enjoying Northern Soul and 80’s club nights nearly every weekend in the city. They are reliving the music they listened and danced to when they were in their late teens and early 20’s. “Now we’ve got to encourage the current 18 to 20 year-olds to create their ‘scene’ that they can relive in 20 years’ time!” I couldn’t agree more with Steve. I consider myself lucky to have experienced the boom in clubbing Steve’s referring to – and he’s right – we did create our own scene. I started clubbing at 16 (yes, under age) and went on until I was 35 – and that was every weekend! I can talk about Viva La Rock, The Gables, L’Aristo’s, Rinaldo’s, Shanghai Sam’s, 5th Avenue and many more legendary venues but what will our current young crop be reminiscing about in 20 years’ time? Probably swiping. Anyway, Steve’s free entry and £5 to spend at the bar will run every Saturday night throughout the summer. Check out the Met’s Facebook page for all the latest.

Refuse Rocket Team Gives you Fairy Wings! A team from Viridor’s Peterborough Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) are taking to the track in their own racing machine when they compete in the Red Bull Soap Box Challenge at London’s Alexandra Palace on July 9. Aptly named the Refuse Rocket, their handmade machine will tackle the famous downhill race and fuelling their ‘rocket’ is nothing but sheer courage and the force of gravity. True to Viridor’s message, which emphasises recycling and transforming waste, the Peterborough team are engineering their green dream racing machine entirely from recycled parts, which include a Viridor wheelie bin and a school chair (the drivers’ seat!). The team’s entry into this coveted international event will also raise money for local charity Anna’s Hope, which helps children and young people with brain tumours. Viridor has pledged to match the team’s fundraising to the tune of £2,000, so the Refuse Rocket team are urging you to support them by visiting 809. Good luck guys!
Studio Romance?
OF THE MONTH
It’s summer and we’re gulping it by the barrel load. We love it but sometimes it doesn’t love us: wet patch, morning after pill, overdraft, darts player belly, chlamydia, slap, badger breath, divorce, chili sauce, driving ban, thinking you’re Brad Pitt in Fight Club and throwing up kebab in the taxi.
MY

WORD
It’s been great joining Keith and Claire in the Peterborough Community Radio (PCRFM) studio on Saturday mornings and watching how the city’s on-air married couple breeze through their show. But the real romance has always been between Claire and I. So, you can imagine how devastated she was when I printed a photo of Keith Dalton and I in last month’s column. Here’s the moment when we kissed and made up. Keith: our bromance was always going to be a flash in the pan. Claire: am I truly forgiven?

ESP interviews football legend, Craig Mackail-Smith. The word legend is often overused. But, with Craig Mackail-Smith breaking Jim Hall's record of most FA cup goals for Posh (a total of 12!), whilst scoring over 100 goals for the club, I feel it is justified! Our magazine has teamed up with the charity, Sports Connections Foundation (or SCF, who are based here in Peterborough) which uses sport to help and inspire children. Years on, their original programme – Prokick – has engaged with over 400,000 children across the country. Our partnership with SCF has allowed us to exclusively interview the charity’s celebrity ambassadors. This time we were welcomed into the home of Craig Mackail-Smith.
Craig still finds the time to help support the SCF charity. He told me, “When I was asked to get involved, it was a no-brainer. As a sportsman and a father, when I heard how SCF helps and inspires children through sport, I was fully on board. I’ve attended a few events and will continue to do so.” In 2007, Craig was signed by Peterborough United and made a strong start, scoring eight goals in 15 games and played a big part in Posh’s promotion to
“As a sportsman and a father, when I heard how SCF helps and inspires children through sport, I was fully on board.”
Chatting to the sportsman in his own home allowed me to get a genuine insight into his life off the pitch. He’s an extremely proud family man and a great dad. With his two children roaming around us, it led to one of the most hilariously random interviews. At one point I was given a stick as a gift from his son (which I still have!) and the next minute, the young boy was shoving an ice-cream into his dad’s face! Despite his hectic family life and career, 16 www.espmag.co.uk
League One during his first full season with the club. “I’m still good mates with McLean,” Craig told me. “I was teasing him recently, saying with that gut of his, he’s clearly enjoying life. I also speak to Grant McCann quite often. I’m thankful to Grant and the Club Chairman for allowing me to come back to Posh for a few games, resulting in me scoring my onehundredth goal for the club,” – a moment Craig described as, “bitter sweet. On one hand I’d just scored my one-hundredth goal and I was thrilled, but we lost the actual game.” I wondered what it was like being at Posh this time around compared to his first stint. “It was very different. When I first joined Posh I was one of the youngest players. I got caught up in the glitz and glamour that comes with being a footballer and I perhaps took things for granted at the time. I could see some of my old ways in some of the boys when I returned to the club and I took the opportunity to chat to them about it. Being older and wiser, I
was able to explain the importance of earning the blessed life we’ve been fortunate enough to have.” In 2011, Craig joined Brighton & Hove Albion, signing a four-year contract. I wondered how different things were with a different team both on and off the pitch. “It was a very different way of playing. In hindsight I would’ve done things very different. I let my ego take over and expected my teammates to play more towards my style when actually; I should have been the one learning to play theirs. Because of that, I didn’t play as good as I should have. I’ve had to learn to forgive myself as I know if I had done things differently, I could have been in the Premier League with them.” A question I had to ask was who the better crowd is… Peterborough or Brighton? After some awkward laughter, Craig eventually told me, “In Brighton we were playing to thirty-thousand fans and Peterborough was around six thousand. With that in mind, I’ll have to say Peterborough, because even though there were a lot less numbers, the fans made up for it in noise and general support. The atmosphere was fantastic. I must stress though that Brighton fans are amazing too. When I returned from a major injury, they were great and completely stood by me.”
So, time for me to confess – I’ve never been able to do keepy-uppie’s, with my record being an embarrassing two! So, I asked Craig if he could teach me and we filmed the whole thing. Was he able to help me? Find out on our website www.espmag.co.uk. You’ll also find online the second part of our interview, where we talk about his goal at the final at Old Trafford against Huddersfield (which helped get Posh promoted) and also what’s next for Craig after football. Maybe it was the cocktails, the excitement on the faces of the staff, the great reggae tunes or the heatwave, but the summer vibe was all over the preview night. We were treated to rum and cocktails and an incredible array of sharing platters of delicious Caribbean food to sample and we can’t wait to return. Turtle Bay has brought a whole new flavour to the city with a colourful beach shack interior and a chilled out feel. Food is at the heart of the Turtle Bay experience – just as it’s central to the heart and soul of Caribbean culture. It’s an eclectic cuisine influenced by a rich tapestry of ethnicities – from Creole to South Asian, there’s a big variety of vibrant tastes and flavours on offer. They also make great cocktails – whether they’re alcohol infused or not – and the huge range of rums will blow your mind, some of them literally, so check the strength! Drop in soon and tuck into Turtle Bay’s signature dish of jerk chicken or there’s a wide range of stunning vegan and vegetarian dishes too. You can find Turtle Bay near the Argos entrance to Queensgate bringing a beach vibe to St. John’s Square in the city’s dining our quarter. Whether it’s dining, drinking or even dancing, Turtle Bay Peterborough looks set to be the town’s slice of Caribbean paradise.

New Community Café A new community café and garden has recently opened in Westwood which sounds like a great initiative bringing lots of community groups together and using local and sustainablysourced food. It’s all thanks to the WestRaven Big Local project, a team of passionate residents and volunteers supported by local organisations such as the charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) and Cross Keys Homes, and is housed at Hampton Court in Westwood. The newly-opened café and garden is part of a major investment project led by WestRaven Big Local, the community organisation that represents the residents of Westwood and Ravensthorpe. The organisation has received a £1 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund to help make improvements in the area. The café now includes a kitchen, a wheelchair accessible training kitchen, community area and a youth space with recording equipment. The café will serve affordable, healthy and (where possible) seasonal or local food. Much of the ingredients are provided by FareShare, the organisation that takes surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, to redistribute it elsewhere. Produce from the garden will be used in both the school kitchen and the community café, to show the true ‘plot to plate’ ethos. It’s now open 8am-4pm, Monday to Friday and on special event weekends. To find out more call 01733 330040 or go to www.westraven.co.uk. Plus find the project on Facebook and Twitter @WestRaven. www.espmag.co.uk

paparazzi Caught in the act? ESP Enters the Dragon...
We were proud to be the print media partner of this year’s Dragon Boat Festival and the ESP Motley Crew secured 10th place in the race! Carol Lester, Director, Gable Events said – “It was a brilliant day, we’ve had some excellent feedback from the crews and it was pleasing how many colleagues, supporters and spectators came down to cheer on the teams at the Rowing Lake. We were delighted to have attracted 36 teams this year (the most for many years) and to race eight boats added to the rivalry and fun. With the support of ESP magazine we had many new teams enter this year (including the ESP Motley Crew!) and they’ve all said they will be passing on what a great day it was.” ESP’s photographer Mike Harris wisely stayed bankside to capture the action! With two former Peterborough rowers representing Great Britain this year, you might just have the chance at the Peterborough Summer Regatta on August 12 – 13. The event attracts over seven hundred competitors from around the country to the city. Saturday’s races use the full 1000m length of the rowing lake, allowing for more tactical and technical rowing. Sunday’s 500m sprints can favour power over style, but the closer finishes are always popular with the crowds! Races occur every three to four minutes on both days. When not racing, the local rowers can be found staffing the licensed bar or running the ever-popular cake stand; thirsty spectators are always welcome! Races start around 9am and finish after 6pm, with free parking and entry on both days. For more info, visit www.peterboroughcityrowing.co.uk

She’s the pop star of the moment with a new album and huge chart hits, ESP’s Sarah Tempest gets chained to the rhythm of Katy Perry…
It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly 10 years since Katy Perry burst Sarah Tempest onto the music scene with an energy and sass that took on the mantle of the pouting ‘Girl Power’ of the 90s and rebranded and propelled it slap bang into the Noughties. And we’ve never been able to look at Cherry Chapstick, if the Urban Dictionary definition is to be believed, in the same way since.
Industrial & Commercial Cleaners
Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, her strict religious upbringing (both her parents were Pentecostal ministers having become Born Again Christians following a reportedly ‘wild youth’) has been well documented. Not allowed access to secular music, Katy grew up listening to gospel music (although she was introduced to pop music after sneaking CDs from her friends) and found singing provided escapism from her restrictive homelife. At 17, she left home to

pursue a career in music and, after a faltering start, she came to the attention of the head of Capitol Records, adopted her mother’s maiden name of Perry and the rest, as they say, is herstory. Since her debut single, I Kissed a Girl, the hits have come thick and fast including modern day anthems such as California Gurls, Firework, and of course, the track guaranteed to get your drunk Auntie throwing shapes on the dancefloor at your cousin’s wedding, Roar. And
with every new album has come a change of image; as she’s moved seamlessly from vintage pin up to kitsch vamp, to female warrior, Katy Perry has given ‘Queen of reinvention’ Madonna, a run for her money along the way. Save for an ill fated 14 month marriage (to comedian Russell Brand), the past 10 years have been good to Katy Perry; she’s racked up a cumulative 18+ billion streams; achieved worldwide sales of more than 40+ million albums and 125+ million tracks. She’s performed in the coveted Superbowl halftime slot and, not only is she the first person ever to achieve three songs reaching RIAA Diamond status (an incredible 10+million sales each) she’s also the most followed person globally on Twitter with over 100million followers hanging on to her every musing. So what’s next for the girl surely on course for world domination? We’ve seen her dramatically crowd surf at Glastonbury, where she showcased her edgier side playing the Pyramid stage. Now following the release of her new album Witness, she’s heading off on tour, her first since her 151 date, sold out Prismatic World tour which concluded in 2015. The European leg of the Witness tour will be in the UK in June next year and if Rolling Stone’s review of her last tour as ‘a show to damage retinas and blow minds’ is anything to go by, this one is not to be missed. Yet for all her achievements, legendary status and global superstardom, Katy Perry still seems like the kind of girl you could invite round for a movie and Marmite on toast after a pint at the Tap – and that surely is the secret of her appeal. Just don’t nick all her Pringles – because, rumour has it, you’re gonna hear her Roar! The UK leg of the Witness tour kicks off in London at the O2 in June next year and tickets are on sale via www.KatyPerry.com and www.axs.com.

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…
2010-2011 season (left to right); Craig Mackail-Smith, Gabriel Zakuani and Chris Whelpdale
I think every football fan remembers their first ever kit – and certainly those of a certain age (I am referring to myself here) can confirm that back in the olden days, strips really were outlandish. Here at Peterborough United we are not adverse to the odd dip into the eccentric. Our ‘pizza’ kit from the mid 90s was a creation that can only have been conjured up by somebody under the influence of alcohol – just staring at it made me feel drunk.
2009 season (left to right); Craig Mackail-Smith, George Boyd and Tom Williams Everyone can recall that famous grey Manchester United kit which was to blame for a 3-1 defeat at Southampton (well according to the manager) and I think most people acknowledge that David Seaman donned some awful goalkeeper kits, which seemed to amalgamate every single colour of the rainbow.
32 www.espmag.co.uk
Thankfully, these days (with the odd exception) kits are a bit easier on the eye. In recent seasons, our bright away kits have proved popular with supporters and finding that special home shirt is always the aim. Our 2017-2018 home kit launch will take place at Serpentine Green, Hampton on Sunday July 9 from 10am with players taking to the catwalk to show off the new strip and I know I’m biased, but I love it and hopefully the fans will do too. I know a lot of supporters think we just tick a box and say ‘yeah that one will do’, but a lot
goes into the selection of a brand new kit. Behind the scenes, a lot of people decide which way we will go in terms of colour, look and feel and we believe this new strip will be a winner. At our kit launch, we will be joined by representatives of our main shirt sponsors Mick George who’ll be providing some activity to get involved in. They’re also running a competition on Twitter to find two lucky young fans to join us on the morning. The fixtures for the new campaign were released on June 21 and we’ll be giving away tickets to the first home league game of the season in next month’s ESP magazine, so make sure you check out my page for details. To view the fixtures, please visit the club website www.theposh.com. Phil
INDEPENDENTS’
DAY In our own nod towards July 4th we’re celebrating our own Independents’ Day this month and just some of the local businesses bringing their unique flavour to the city. These give us much needed variety when it comes to our regular shopathon so make sure you support them!
Art in the Heart Westgate Arcade Art in the Heart, art gallery and gift shop is a unique offering in the city centre with comments in their visitor’s book describing it as ‘the best shop in Peterborough’ and ‘the jewel in the city’. Owner Dawn Birch-James is proud of their achievements – “We exhibit and sell the work of over 60 artists and makers from the area from fine artists to jewellery makers. So we are truly unique. Most items are one offs, individually made or ranges which are unique to us. “You would think that our items are expensive but we have hundreds of gift options below £10 including a vast selection of cards. We also have exhibitions, workshops and art demonstrations.” Art in the Heart had to vacate their old Council owned premises because of redevelopment and turned to Queensgate instead. “They thought we would fit in with what they were wanting to achieve down Westgate Arcade,” says Dawn, “a more unique independent shopping experience and the refurbished arcade looks fab!” Tel: 07910 118148 or visit the website: www.artintheheart.co.uk
The Emporium Mancetter Square Back in the day The Gables in Werrington was a thriving bar, but it’s had a chequered few years. Now we’re pleased to see it’s been brought back to life as The Emporium home of well... all sorts! It’s the brainchild of Jo Ward and is a treasure trove of interesting items – vintage, retro, antique and collectables. You can easily while away your time hunting out anything from crafts to unique finds. “So far we have over 50 traders, including local artists, crafters etc. who sell their goods within The Emporium. We also have an Art Gallery room which we are looking to use for local groups to hire and also for classes such as craft classes, art demonstrations and workshops.
Shaf Saeed
Back to Life Westgate Arcade There’s a new face in Westgate Arcade but selling some great vintage items. Shaf Saeed from London moved to Peterborough in December and up until recently was involved in the fitness industry for the last 17 years with a side passion for fashion. His new venture, Back to Life stocks a great range of vintage clothing and accessories. Shaf told us – “I think the big thing I’ve found is that my customers are saying there's nothing like this in Peterborough. My shop has very much the Camden or Brick Lane feel to it, which is exactly what I'm after. “I have vintage fashion that caters for most generations alongside customised and reworked items.” Shaf is a great example of an independent – “I’ve been self employed most of my working life but never owned or run a shop,” he explains. “So this whole experience is very new to me but I've taken to it like a duck to water. All my influences and ideas for the shop have come from the great shops in London where I’ve taken a little bit from each to make my own here in Peterborough.” Contact Shaf on 07958 498404. 34 www.espmag.co.uk
“At the moment we are in the process of asking the local community what sort of thing they would like to see the room used for so we can make sure we are setting up the sort of things locals want to access rather than just what we think they want.” Tel: 01733 571543 or find them on Facebook.
Style Westgate Arcade Style opened 10 years ago in the Westgate Arcade and after three moves currently occupies its largest unit yet. It’s pure retail heaven for anyone with a love of jewellery and accessories and stocks some great designer brands including Troll beads as well costume jewellery, evening bags and scarves. Having a unique offer is vital for an independent to thrive and store manager Amanda Dinatale told us – “We also stock Vendula, which is a Amanda Dinatale bag brand and we are the only store in Peterborough to sell it. We also pride ourselves in our level of customer service, which we feel has hugely helped our repeat custom.” Westgate Arcade has become the home of the independent retailer and Style is one of its hubs – “We have a great position at the top of the arcade and the shop rent cost is really competitive,” says Amanda. ESP’s Rachael Church has all the latest health and beauty news‌
rachael.church@espmag.co.uk
This month loads of us are prepping for our summer hols, so whether you’ve got a few weeks in the sun or you’re hoping to catch some rays here in England.... check out our summer health and beauty guide right here.
What is it: Olay Complete Everyday Sunshine Day Cream Why it’s good: At the very start of your holiday, this product will offer a sun-kissed glow and a gradual streakfree tan, come rain or shine. Going forward, the 24 hour moisture hydrates your skin 7 layers deep to let your inner glow come through. My thoughts: I’m quite pale, so this is a good alternative to fake tan especially if you’re fair. How much: usually £8, but has been seen on offer at your local Sainsbury for a fiver.
Our skin, hair and body are all affected by the summer sun so it’s crucial our holiday beauty essentials cover all these bases. Here’s how to make sure you stay looking radiant during these lovely summer months – with some great products you can buy right here in Peterborough from three of our local retailers. And here at ESP we’ve tried them all for you.
What is it: Nivea Sun Moisturising After Sun Lotion 200ml Why it’s good: This one is highly recommended as it comes with aloe vera and is enriched with avocado oil. It helps maintain your skin's elasticity and ensures a long-lasting, beautiful tan. My thoughts: feels very refreshing and soothing on the skin. How much: £7, or 2 for £11 at Tesco for a limited time.
What is it: Aussie's 3 Minute Miracle Beach Mate Why it’s good: This great product offers a quick fix for beached-out hair. Its rich restorative qualities, with Australian balm mint, are just the stuff to counter the stress and help make your hair silky again. My thoughts: Especially good for blondes like me! I really liked how blonde my hair looked after use. How much: £4.99 at Boots.
What is it: Burt's Bees Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm Why it’s good: Dry lips can be a major problem, so make sure you get Burt's Bees ultra-hydrating lip conditioner. It contains kokum, shea, and cocoa butters and is clinically proven to moisturise for 4 hours with one application. My thoughts: It did as promised and leaves your lips soft and supple. How much: Pick it up at John Lewis for just £4
What is it: OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo Why it’s good: This exclusive blend of organic coconut milk will help to nourish your hair by replacing any lost hydration and balance. My thoughts: It works, and I particularly loved the smell! How much: £6.99 from Superdrug.
What is it: Jessica Brilliance Top Coat Why it’s good: Brilliance is a fast-drying, high gloss top coat and at the same time will protect your nails from the sun’s rays. My thoughts: Really great investment as every time you add another coat your nails look good as new again! How much: Available at John Lewis for £12.50.
Did you know that The Cancer Research UK website has a tool where you can find out your skin type to see when you might be at risk of burning? Always worth checking out before you go away to sunnier climates. Protecting your moles is also very important when you’re out in the sun. 36 www.espmag.co.uk
Cancer Research has some great advice on how to take extra care: •
Avoid getting caught out by sunburn. Use shade, clothing and a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect yourself.
•
Keep an eye out for changes to your skin. Changes to check for include: a new mole, growth or lump or any moles, freckles or patches of skin that change in size, shape or colour.
Enjoy the sun and stay protected!
ESP’S resident action man Darren Grigas has picked up a few injuries on his adventures, so we sent him to Reform…
H
aving put myself through many physically demanding challenges in recent years I've had my fair share of niggles Stuart Hancock and injuries and have had a number of treatments to maintain and repair my body. So I was interested to see what was on offer at Reform by Stuart Hancock and particularly his offering of Raynor Massage. Whilst Stuart offers other traditional methods at Reform, he specialises in Raynor which although very effective, is certainly not for the faint hearted... it may even bring a tear to the eye, but believe me it's worth it. Stuart used to be a professional dancer both performing and choreographing and struggled to find effective long lasting treatments until he discovered Raynor Massage. This was the one that best solved his problems and has a great history of success. Stuart then trained to become a therapist himself to help aid others and so I went to see what it was all about. We had an initial consultation to get an idea of my lifestyle, level of fitness and what exercise I do. He took notes of any injuries old and new (I've had a few) and then we got to work.
This was to be a full head-to-toe treatment some of which was comfortable enough but some areas that were already tender were not going to be easy. The level of pressure can be adjusted to suit what’s tolerable by whoever is being treated. He aimed for around 7 out of 10 initially and I had to let him know if I could take more so he could work deeper into the muscle if necessary for better results. Starting with my feet and lower legs I was quickly aware of how the tension in my calves was released by some effective work on my feet. The whole of my legs were treated and at times I was struggling but got through it and the results were great. My back gets very tight but after some heavy pressure from thumbs, forearms and even elbows in the right areas, it was feeling so much better. There's good pain and bad pain, if it's fixing a problem area and undoing the damage then I count that as good pain.
This massage is certainly not just for people that are used to intense sports massage but will benefit anyone regardless of age and fitness level and is very effective in removing the normal aches and pains that have such an
“...will benefit anyone regardless of age and fitness level...” impact on our daily lives. It not only relieves the pain, but will also seek out and remove the deep rooted tension that’s causing the problem in the first place. Whilst also offering Swedish massage, a more holistic and relaxing alternative, Stuart is also a graduate of the Axiom waxing academy and is a tanning therapist which he also offers from his studio in Eye. If you have a long term or new niggle that needs addressing I can certainly recommend a visit to see Stuart at Reform. But don't expect incense sticks, petals and whale music, do expect to get to the source of the problem and get it thoroughly worked out of your body and have you back in good form again soon. GET READY FOR PLANET B IN PETERBOROUGH! It’s all change for this year’s annual Green Festival in Peterborough with film screenings, workshops, events and art all lined up to get the message across… there is no Planet B!

It’s not long now until Peterborough’s flagship running event the Perkins Great Eastern Run half marathon on Sunday October 8 and it’s an ideal event to find your own moment to be ‘great’. I’m in training for this year’s race and will be including the kids too – whether it’s the half marathon or the 5k fun run you can really turn this into your own adventure and get fitter in the process. Thousands of people will be flowing through the city, chasing times, raising money and achieving their own personal goals. This fantastic event has been going for years now and it’s always great to see people from all walks of life, ages, shapes and sizes setting out to cross that finish line and make themselves and their loved ones proud. I’m always inspired by every runner on a course chasing a goal, whether they’re the fastest or the slowest doesn’t matter, they’re still out there doing it for their own reasons and I love that. For anyone who likes the idea of a half-marathon but has never got around to it I’d suggest just biting the bullet and getting involved. If you think you don’t ‘have’ time then ‘make’ time, if you think it’s out of your league well you’ve got a few months left to get ready. To help you there are free training evenings for runners of all abilities every other Wednesday from July at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track. The training sessions have been organised by Advance Performance and are held in conjunction with experienced runners and coaches from local running clubs, who’ll lead the runs. Each training session begins at 7pm with a warm up and you’ll be divided according to level of fitness and aspirations before being taken for a training run. The dates are: 12 July, 26 July, 9 August, 23 August, 6 September, 20 September, 4 October I'm enjoying my own training and also seeing progress updates from friends taking part and we're all looking forward to enjoying the day, the course and the amazing crowds! Being a Peterborough lad, PGER is a staple in my running calendar and I love being around to take part. It's especially great to see Anna's Hope getting so much support through the event now, they're such a fantastic charity with a big heart and incredible dreams. 40 www.espmag.co.uk
It certainly gives you even more purpose and motivation if you raise money for charity and you’re spurred on knowing your efforts are making a life changing difference to others. For the second year the PGER’s official charity is the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and for the fun run it’s Anna’s Hope, making a difference to children battling brain tumours.
Thanks to generous donations at last year’s event there’s now the chance for local charities to nominate themselves for one of five £1,000 grants thanks to a sponsorship partnership between the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and Perkins Great Eastern Run. Any nominations are welcome from charities in Peterborough that support children or anyone affected by cancer by Monday August 14. To nominate, just grab a form from the Visitor Information Centre on Bridge Street, or visit www.janetomlinsonappeal.com/GreatEasternGiveaway. So whatever your motivation for running the PGER this year you know it’ll do you and others good so I’ll see you on the course in October… whether you’re in your high grade running gear or a chicken suit! PROJECT FEST This September a banging new dance music festival is about to hit the East of England Arena with over 80 artists across six arenas. Project Fest is being brought to us by DJ Danny Burch and his team so get ready to see out the summer in style, but get your tickets now! How difficult has it been to get off the ground? “It’s not been hard to get off the ground as such, once we had the investment we could then get the company open, then book the date of the festival at the Showground. “Andy and Steve at the Showground have been an amazing help giving advice in areas such as health and safety amongst other aspects required that myself and Clair haven't experienced before. ESP caught up with Danny to find out more… ESP: How did you become a DJ, how long have you been doing it and where? “I got my first set of decks, disco decks I may add, at 10 years old and then my parents realised it wasn't a fad and bought me some turntables at 12. So this year on fireworks night I’ve been DJing for 23 years. My main residency is with Pam’s House Norwich @ UEA where I’ve been a resident for 14 years in January 2018.” What gave you the idea for Project Fest, why did you decide to go for it? “It’s been a dream of mine since I was at school and one of my projects in business studies was to hold a party on the school field but it never happened.
VANITY BEYONCÉ NIGHT On Friday July 7, Vanity returns to the Red Room on Broadway with the Beyoncé Special. Residents DJ Nick T & host Fontzerelli will be taking you through a collection of Beyoncé anthems, from early Destiny's Child days right up to her latest releases! On the night you can grab yourself a free Beyoncé mixtape and they’ll be releasing further information as to which artist will be joining the Vanity team in the Red Room next for another live showcase! Expect to hear all the usual urban club bangers as well! To jump on the guest list simply text ‘Vanity + your name’ to 07411 258 999. 46 www.espmag.co.uk
“It was my fiancée Clair who said ‘I don't want you reaching 65 and saying what if?’ So we both drew up a business plan and found some investment and Project Fest was born. “Peterborough showground is an iconic venue and being so central in the UK and with the A1 running right next to it we thought it to be the perfect venue and location to hold Project Fest. The East of England doesn't have an outdoor festival purely focusing on house, trance, hard dance and hardcore.”
“Don't get me wrong, this has been one of the hardest things I've personally taken on but I have such a great team around Project Fest that has made my life much easier ensuring it all runs smoothly.” What can we expect from the event? “An exciting weekend of music across multiple genres housed in multiple arenas bringing clubbers together new and old. Those coming can expect to see the UK's best DJ's in proper top tents, an outdoor stage and for those who need a break a chill out area too. “The arenas will have top quality sound and visuals giving the clubbers a weekend they won’t forget and a full clubbing experience to take home.” What's your big dream for the event and the future? “Our dream is to become an annual event once a year adding more arenas, booking the biggest names in the industry and to keep pushing the boundaries of the festival circuit. “Finally we just want all those who attend to have the best experience of Project Fest in a bid to create the next recognised festival in the UK.” Project Fest is coming to Peterborough on September 23, tickets are available from the Visitor information Cntre on Bridge Street, or via Facebook.com/projectfest.

Elton John
Photos: Joe Dent/theposh.com
I admit I am not an avid Elton John fan, but as my wife suggested that it was an opportunity to see a world renowned star appear locally, I was one of the thousands who attended Peterborough United’s ABAX Stadium last month. Or should I say one of the LUCKY thousands who chose to go! The whole day was perfect from beginning to end. It takes a lot of organisation to produce this type of show and EVERYTHING came together perfectly. Well done to the security, the police, the Posh, the stewards and the technical staff. The sound and lighting was top class. Now to the artists who were superb. The unenviable task of support act was Jake Issacs who showed quality and real vitality in his warm up act. Then came Elton John and his band, who gave us many of his familiar hits, sprinkled with a few from his latest album Wonderful Crazy Nights. The band was so tight and it is obvious that their sort of performance can only be achieved by working together through a long career, (nearly 50 years in some cases, like drummer Nigel Olsen who has been with
Woofstock 2017
Elton since 1969). The music was interspersed with Elton’s interaction with the audience all of whom seemed to be enjoying the show. Poignant moments like the tribute to George Michael which brought a standing ovation for Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me. He finished with some real rock ‘n’ roll belters, I’m Still Standing, Saturday Nights Alright and Crocodile Rock. And the encore was my favourite Candle in the Wind. And then Elton was away, leaving us with a hugely memorable day. Without exception, everyone that I have spoken to agreed that it was a superb experience and you would not have known that this was Posh’s first experience of such an event. Posh Commercial Manager and organiser Alex Harris said: “I think everyone will agree the concert was a huge success and hopefully the first of many at the ABAX Stadium. “The atmosphere was fantastic and Sir Elton John and his band put on an incredible show, to put on a concert of this scale involves an incredible amount of support and input from all of our staff and contractors and I would like to thank each and every one of them for their superb efforts.” Let’s hope there will be more of the same!. Congratulations Posh and thank you Sir Elton.
Stamford Music Festival
I’m pleased to see that the 9th annual Woofstock festival is back at The Angel Inn Yarwell on Saturday July 29 and Sunday July 30. This great little music festival was created in 2009 by pub owners Nick and Diane Lander as a fundraising event for The Greyhound Trust (formerly known as The Retired Greyhound Trust - registered charity 269668). This now highly established village event is once again taking its ‘slot’ of ‘the last weekend of July’ where at last year’s event, over £2,700 was raised for this amazing charity. Having given a forever home to five retirees so far, the Greyhound Trust is an obvious choice of charity for Nick and Diane. And to date the festival’s raised over £17.1k for the charity. Bands and musicians set to play over the weekend include The Expletives, The Rocket Dogs, C.U.R.E, Demoniser, Gone to the Dogs, The Steradents, Y&N Britannia Brass, UKe’aotic, Half Price Drinks and Desperate Measures.

There will also be a real ale and cider festival and BBQ in the beer garden. Once again, the fun atmosphere will be instigated and compered by DJ, Jim Boulton, who’s joined this year by his PCRFM colleagues Kristy Read and Garry Overend from The Random Radio Show. More info can be found at www.woofstock.rocks Dogs are of course welcome!
The latest acts for the three-day Stamford Music Festival have been announced. Joining the main stage bill will be Satya Dub Orchestra, Harripaul, and Hannah Johnson and the Broken Hearts. These are in addition to previously announced headline bands include Groove Cartell, The Gangsters, Bianca and the Top Cats, Top Banana Band, Austin Gold (pictured), and The Balloons. The acoustic stage has additions as well and they include Tommy Loose, Chris Fox, Wild Heart, Lynn McFarland, Resonate, Emily Brown, I Saw Rod and Jenny Eva. The festival is being held on Stamford Town Meadows from July 14 to July 16, and each day there will be plenty to do for the whole family including children’s entertainment, a craft market, and stalls offering a variety of food and drink including craft beer and street food. Tickets are available locally from Stamford Music Shop and Stamford Arts Centre, or online from www.clickittickets.co.uk.
Randall Rootz – The Return!
Proudly sponsored by
I’m excited to see The Randall Rootz Festival make a welcome return to Peterborough this summer. This was a real highlight on the city’s live music calendar and was sorely missed. Now organisers have confirmed that a new event will be held over the weekend of August 18, 19 & 20 and it’s music to our ears here at ESP!

New American Roots Night A local promoter, Kelly Gregory, from Stamford, is starting some regular monthly gig nights on Thursday July 20 featuring roots based US Country artists as the headliners. The first one is at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge and brings to Stamford, Nashville-based Scott Southworth. If you’re a country fan, you should hear his single Whiskey Bottle on YouTube, and that will encourage you to attend. There is support from leading UK Ameripolitan artist Ags Connolly and local act Old Boy (Of The Fens) It’s a new venture for country fans, who don’t often get the chance to see locally, artists from the home of country, so my advice is support it and encourage Kelly to book some more. August’s gig has Texas singer-songwriter Libby Koch already confirmed for Thursday August 24.
Boba Fett Are Back! It’s always good to see bands re-uniting, I recommend attending Boba Fett – A Slight Return. It’s at The Ploughman in Werrington on Saturday July 1 and it celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the formation of the band Boba Fett, and four of the original members will feature. Boba Fett was formed in Peterborough in 1997 by Spencer Hart and Carl Golder. Carl recruited a former colleague on drums, Scott Bearman-Brown and a new singer in the person of Scott's brother, Karl. If some of these names are familiar to you, then that’s because they went on to become members of the very successful 60’s band The Nuggets who appear regularly around Peterborough. This band played material from the likes of The Stereophonics, Verve, Pulp, Oasis and the Manics and that’s what you can expect at The Ploughman, along with a few newer ones. The four will be joined for the gig by Nuggets bassist, Karl Martin and they have been hard in rehearsal, including
Father’s Day even though there are 4 Dads in the band. That’s dedication and four very understanding families for you. So will this be a one off? Singer Karl Brown is optimistic. “Who knows? There may be spin off gigs which we would want to do but this will not interfere with the future of The Nuggets which will definitely continue. But the anniversary of the start for us was too exciting to miss. The gig is a challenge and we are all looking forward to The Ploughman on July 1.” So why did they choose The Ploughman for the reunion? Drummer Scott BearmanBrown explained, “Boba Fett never got to play The Ploughman back in the day, but as a massive supporter of all members' various projects since then, it's only right that this is the stage for this gig." A good choice, and a good warm up for The Ploughman as it holds its Beer Festival on the following weekend (see last month’s column and this issue’s Gig Guide for timings throughout the weekend).
It follows a break of several years, but festival chairman Andy Whittaker told me why it was vital the festival made re-appearance this summer. “The Randall Rootz Festival was originally launched by a committee of friends and family in memory of talented city percussionist Mark Randall, who died from cancer in February 2007, aged just 34. It’s now 10 years since his death and we wanted once again to commemorate all that Mark contributed to the city in a way that we all know he’d like – with lots of quality live music.” The line-up for this year’s event pays tribute to the inaugural festival and includes two bands with which Mark played drums – acoustic rock outfit, Angryman, plus the world’s most famous Pogues tribute band, The Dead Rabbits. The two bands will open the weekend on the Friday night. Tickets for the opening night event will be available from The Brewery Tap from Saturday July 1, priced at £10 each.
The whole weekend aims to raise money and awareness for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough, where Mark Randall was cared for in his last weeks, as well as celebrating Mark’s life and his passion for live music and community. The Saturday and Sunday events are both free of charge and will be held at Charters, just off Town Bridge. The full line-up will be announced in the August issue of ESP, but acts confirmed so far include Dan Donovan, The Palmerston Ukulele Band, Lexie Green, Chris Watson, Ramshackle Serenade and The Claddagh Band. Andrew added: “Just as it has been in previous years, Saturday and Sunday will be incredibly family friendly – we want everyone to have a good time, and all are welcome. The music will be as diverse as ever and this is a chance to celebrate the vibrant musical scene that we have in this city. We also plan to have a specially-brewed Randall Rootz Beer to really celebrate the weekend. The whole committee is feeling very excited about the prospect of bringing the festival back – it’s going to be a brilliant weekend and we can’t wait for it to get underway.” For full details, see next month’s issue of ESP or ‘like’ the festival’s page on Facebook at facebook.com/RandallRootz Official
Rest In Peace Rob Here at ESP we were sorry to hear of the passing of well known and respected local bass player Rob Fraser. He will be familiar to many from his time playing with local band The Pulse. Jason from the band told ESP – “He was my best friend, we as The Pulse were
together from 2001, but Rob has been on the Peterborough music seen for much, much longer and I know there will be a lot of musicians that Rob knew.” Our condolences go out to his wife Julia, his family and friends – he’ll be sorely missed on the local music scene.
Charity Music Day @ The Crown The Crown on Lincoln Road, New England is holding a charity music event on Sunday July 23 in order to help raise money for a new charity, End Youth Homelessness, This is an organisation which aims to assist and support young people without a home. Organiser Terry Narraine told me “There are currently 83,000 young people without a home, and this new charity is vital to providing long term solutions to their plight.” Terry is compering the day himself and there is an impressive lineup in place: Another Girl Another Planet, Velocity, The Expletives, Third Stone From The Sun, Desperate Measures and Staceman Duo The charity event is on Sunday July 23, from 4pm -11pm and includes a BBQ and a raffle in addition to the fine ales that The Crown has to offer. www.espmag.co.uk
