CASTLE BYTHAM MIDSUMMER FAIR

HOP IT OVER TO THE FROG RACE

Castle Bytham will be hosting a weekend of entertainment starting with a day of music on Saturday June 22 and finishing with a special 1940's themed Midsummer Fair on Sunday June 23.

If you’re looking for something that's a bit quirky, fun for all the family and free to attend, whilst raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, how about the World Frog Racing Championships? It's not what it might appear at first glance, as these are not the slimy little critters that live amongst the lily pads forever hopeful of a kiss from a passing princess; no these are eight foot tall cut outs, brightly dressed in shorts and t-shirts and waiting for teams of five to haul them along a track in a race to the line to take the title – it really does have to be seen to be believed!

With a BBQ and a bar to help everyone into the groove, this will be a real treat for those who love their blues, rock and acoustic folk, together with some great covers from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Then on the Sunday get ready to be bombarded with attractions including wartime re-enactors who’ll be mingling with visitors in and around the street market, 60 stalls filled with all kinds of wonderful products, a live music stage and much, much more! Elsewhere there will be a wide range of refreshments at the village hall and two pubs and 4x4 rides in the nearby quarry! It’ll then be rounded off with a fly past from the country’s only flying Lancaster bomber! The day starts at 10am and finishes at 4pm. Entry and parking to the event is absolutely free! For more info visit Alex Jones www.midsummerfair.co.uk.

BOURNE CLASSIC CAR SHOW This year’s Bourne Classic Car & Bike Show will be held on Sunday June 9 at the Wellhead Field in Bourne. With hundreds of classic cars, bikes and commercial vehicles on display as well as an extra special celebration of the iconic Porsche 911, this year’s show is shaping up to be the best one yet!

The World Championship 17th annual frog race is being held at the Peterborough Greyhound Stadium on Thursday June 20. The doors open at 6.30pm with the first of the frog races commencing at 7pm. There are still limited places available for groups of five to enter a team (believe us when we say no experience is necessary!) or alternatively, just go along on the night, pick a team to support and cheer them home. For those that fancy a flutter, there’ll be a tote running and light meals will be available along with a full bar service. Come on take the leap and gribbet a go! For further details of the event or on entering a team, call Dale Asplin on 07711 198391 or visit the website Alex Jones www.theworldfrogracingchampionship.com

After purchasing a programme you’ll be entered into a draw with one lucky person winning the Silverstone trip, the runner up will receive £75 in vouchers and 3rd place will win free membership to the Bourne Motor Racing Club! There will also be awards for the lady & gentleman most appropriately dressed for their vehicle. Anyone requiring more information, or wishing to enter either a classic vehicle or race car should call 01733 253867 (evenings) or visit www.bourneclassic carshow.co.uk to get an entry form. This year, entrants are invited with vehicles (including motorcycles) registered in 1993 or earlier, and race cars of any age. Alex Jones

Get ready to sup up as The Solstice holds its annual Beer Festival from June 20 – 24. This is not just any beer festival however. This is a Real Ale, Cider & Perry festival which has a wide array of drinks which will cater to almost any taste! The youngest age group doesn't play competitive matches, with the emphasis instead being on having fun in a rugby environment, ready for future years. The club welcomes players of all shapes and sizes and girls as well as boys. Photos: Chris Brudenell

GOT TO DANCE STAR AT DEEPINGS MINISTRY OF DANCE Winner of Sky One talent series Got To Dance Lukas Tyrell-Mcfarlane gave lucky students at Deeping St. James's Ministry of Dance a very special master-class in dance and choreography. Along with choreographer Matt Flint and Can You Dance co-founder Tom Shilcock's workshops earlier in the day, students were treated to a two hour contemporary dance session by Lukas Mcfarlane which left those in attendance totally taken aback by both his passion and performance. The students were then able to ask Lukas about his life as a dancer and his determination to succeed, he reminded them that a dancer’s life is a constant battle and that their technical training will give them a strong advantage in many auditions but that a dancer also requires the passion from within to make every move count.

PLEASE LET ME WIN THIS BIKE! The sun made a rare appearance for the BMF show last month and I went along to enter myself in every competition going to win a bike. This beautiful Harley was top of my wish list along with a 1969 Norton Commando in British racing green. I’m like a kid in a sweet shop at the BMF and always come back with bags of goodies (Fluxbabes calendar was the best).

Remembering Ando O

ne of my best friends died suddenly last month and the pain is still hard to live with. Antonio Todisco – known to everyone as Ando – was just 41 years-old and I feel privileged to have known Ando for 23 of those years.

We met in 1990 when I was 16 and I became part of a group of friends who are like brothers to me. I’m the person I am today because of my friends and Ando in particular, who was a big influence on me growing up. Advice, compassion, empathy, sincerity, wit, confidence, intelligence and a real zest for life – Ando had everything you’d want in a friend. He influenced some of my biggest ever decisions and made me understand the importance of integrity. Thank you Ando. Our lives will never be the same but our lives are all the better for knowing you and loving you as a brother. We miss you. If anyone who knew Ando would like to pay tribute to him, search Remembering Ando Todisco on Facebook.

The BMF is already Europe’s largest outdoor motorcycle show but this year’s event was even bigger than before. One of the new features was the classic & vintage zone, which I hope will grow in 2014. There’s a second chance to see more of the same when the BMF returns to Peterborough Arena for The Tailend Show from September 13 to 15. For details, visit www.thebmfshow.co.uk

GOOD NEWS FOR CLARKES AND RIVA The company who own Clarkes on Lincoln Road and The Banyan Tree have opened Café Clarkes in the Key Theatre, while Riva has flung open its doors in a new location, which is the building previously occupied by I Toscanini in Eye.

This means we get two fabulous Clarkes restaurants in Peterborough and an even better Riva at bigger, more intimate premises that ensures Italian cuisine has a presence outside of the city centre. Sounds like the perfect excuse to dine at both very soon.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

FAB NIGHT AT VIVA REUNION

Sunshine

Summer is finally on its way – isn’t it? Flip-flops, bad feet hygiene, cider, sunburn, Brazilian, Chlamydia, portaloos, rain, rash, commando, BBQ pink chicken, Imodium, sweat rings, GU clinic, muffin tops, binging, topless sunbathing and binoculars (because the sky at night is clear).

It promised to be a night to remember and the Viva La Rock Reunion certainly lived up to its pre-event billing. The Brewery Tap was packed with faces from back in the day – most were one-time Viva goers and the rest were there to pay homage to the club they wish they’d frequented. There was something special about everyone from a period in the city’s night scene being all together under one roof. Nostalgia unites people and so does music – a big shout to everyone who helped compile a fabulous play list. But the biggest thank you goes to organiser Graham Fairbairn. The reunion was his idea and best of all it raised more than £900 for Cardiac Risk In the Young (CRY). A top night never to be repeated...?

SUNNY HUNNY ANYONE? The boys (and girl) at Man About Town sponsors Balderston have started their eventful ride out season. First trip was to Iron Horse Ranch in Market Deeping where it’s Bike Night every Thursday (6-9pm) and owner Richard lays on a special menu and live entertainment. But there’s nothing like the whiff of sea air and vinegar at this time of year, which is why I recommend joining the crew on their Hunstanton chippy run on Friday May 31.

Other rides planned this year include Boston Bike Night, the Skegness Lifeboat Bike Show and a (bus) ride to Peterborough Beer Festival. See dates and departure times on the Balderston Facebook page or give the guys a call on 01733 565470.

PICNIC THE CARLUCCIO’S WAY If you’re like me and love the idea of having a picnic but can’t be bothered to actually make one then Carluccio’s has the answer. The Italian eatery’s ‘classic’ picnic hamper is priced at just £45, serves two people (three courses), and is generously packed full of mouth-watering Italian delicacies, freshly made on the day and presented in a smart, reusable cool-bag.

SEE CELLO IN TITLE FIGHT A big shout to our city’s Italian Stallion Cello Renda who’s secured an English middleweight title challenge against holder Danny Butler on June 22 at Peterborough Arena. This will be the biggest fight of Cello’s career and it couldn’t have come at a better time for him. Cello’s boxing has visibly improved and he’s training harder than ever. He’s dedicated, disciplined and deserves success.

Carluccio’s can rustle up a picnic for every occasion, plus there’s a vegetarian option and kids’ hampers for £10. This is a fantastic idea and I’d really like to see some of our independently-run restaurants do the same.

Photo: Chris Brudenell

Riders of all levels of experience are welcome and the ride out departs from the Balderston showroom at 5.30pm.

CAUGHT IN TH

E ACT! “Simona wasn't jok ing when she told me her boyfriend was ful l of hot air."

It’s going to be a fight to remember (most of Cello’s bouts are) and I know he won’t stop until that title is his. For tickets, search Marcello Renda on Facebook or call him on: 07947 106116.

JOIN ME ON RIDE TO WORK DAY

(IF IT’S NOT RAINING) Monday June 17 is national Ride to Work Day and employees who ride to work at city-based motorcycle insurers Bennetts will get a free biker breakfast and sports massage. They even get to go on an after-work ride out with

former bike racing champion James Toseland. Best of all, I get to go too! The advantages of life on two wheels are plentiful. Riding to work on a motorbike or scooter is quicker, greener and

cheaper than using a car or public transport. Most of all it’s fun – even if it does rain from time to time. For more information about Ride to Work Day check out www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial www.espmag.co.uk

So you want to run a half-marathon? ESP’s Mikey Clarke is binning his treats and gearing up for the Perkins Great Eastern Run… can you ditch the junk and join him?

I’ve spoken to a few people who’ve said my Perkins Great Eastern Run article (in last month’s ESP) inspired them to sign up to the popular event. One person in particular said – “Well if you can do it, so can I.” This may have been an insult but it’s true. As I said before, if a lazy, take-away addict can do it… you can too! At the latest count just under 1,600 have already entered. If you missed May’s edition of ESP, check it out online www.espmag.co.uk to read my tips on motivating yourself to run. This month I wanted to go into dieting. If you could do with shedding a few pounds (much like myself) in order to help with your running, then here are a few tips for you. Firstly, to lose a pound, the average person must burn 3500 calories. If you’ve started your PGER training, this should be achievable within a few days IF you are eating healthily too. Many runners believe that they can eat what they like as long as they’re exercising too. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

“As I said before, if a lazy, take-away addict can do it... you can too!” 16

www.espmag.co.uk

I’m simply suggesting taking a moment to think about the run before thinking about the local take-away. This year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run takes place on Sunday October 13 at 10.30am. You can take part in the half marathon or the 5k fun run by simply visiting www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk Younger runners should consider the Junior Challenge, which supports the charity Anna’s Hope and is an incentive for schools and young people's groups, such as brownies and cubs to enter the Junior Challenge in the 5k Fun Run. The Voyager Academy’s already raised £1,223 and will be given a sports kit courtesy of ChromaSport Schoolwear & Trophies. Young runners can raise money for the charity of their choice, but can win additional prizes courtesy of ChromaSport Schoolwear & Trophies and Sainsbury's when raising money for Anna's Hope. Don’t forget free training sessions start in July if you need some support and there are more details on the website. We’ll have more tips in next month’s ESP Magazine. Until then, good luck with the training. I may see you around Ferry Meadows!

You are of course entitled to treats, but why not buy them as and when, rather than buying snacks in bulk during your big shop. You’ll be less likely to go on a sweet rampage. Also bear in mind that a plain donut has 185 calories which is the equivalent of a two mile run. Just one Doner Kebab can contain up to 2,000 calories, the equivalent of doing the Perkins Great Eastern Run! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should stop eating these foods completely.

Former Mayor of Peterborough George Simons

Al Murray headlines at Levity Festival

The three day event is a comedy festival with a line up to make everybody laugh, Al Murray, Omid Djalili and Lee Nelson are just three of the well known names that’ll be appearing and it's estimated there’ll be over 50 well known faces when the full line up is booked, complemented with comedy music acts, circus entertainment, street acts, magicians, CBBC’s Ed Petrie with a children’s corner for the youngsters and even comedy burlesque for the not so young!

The joke that’s currently setting the pace on the Levity website comes from former Mayor of Peterborough the right honourable George Simons:

But the news gets better because this month the organisers have launched an exclusive competition called 'You must be joking' to win Fosters Levity Festival VIP tickets worth £1,000.

He enquired about the dog and the owner said it was in the garden, so he goes to the dog in the garden and says – ‘I believe you can talk’.

This is a great fun competition that EVERYONE reading can enter. All you have to do is send in your best joke to Jokes@levityfestival.co.uk

The dog answers ‘yes’ saying ‘I was working for the police and got a few people put in prison because I could talk. Also I was in the C.I.D. and got bigger crooks put away. Not only that, I managed to stop World War 3 because I worked in a spy organisation.’

Members of the public can then vote for their favourite joke on the Levity website joke page www.levityfestival.co.uk/jokes If you’re lucky enough to win you’ll receive a pair of VIP tickets plus some other great goodies, Fosters are also throwing in cases of beer. The lucky winners will also be able to take advantage of meet, greet, photos and autographs with celebrity comedians and it’ll be a VVIP comedy experience to remember! The rules are simple: No swear words and nothing too rude or racist.

A friend of mine, who happens to be a wheeler/dealer, sees a big old house out of town. The windows were falling out, paint peeling on the doors etc. He noticed a sign in the window saying, FOR SALE – TALKING DOG.

As I was leaving I asked the owner what price he wanted for the dog. He replied ‘50p’. I said ‘Why is he so cheap?’

F

ields up and down the country are set to see vast crowds descend upon them as festival season arrives. If you’re like me, you'll be at home firstly doing the not so faithful sun dance and secondly trying to plan your weekend attire. The good thing about dressing for festivals is literally 'anything goes'. There are some gorgeous bits at present on the high street that act as staple pieces for your weekend but if you have that urge to be different from the crowd then make those garments your own by personalising them. Now, I've lost count of the times I've looked at things and thought ‘I could do that’ and yet I still haven't ever got round to doing any of them! Renata Brown at Glitz Boutique on the other hand can… She specialises in customising absolutely anything from trainers to clothes and apparel to high end. There’s no limit to Renata’s talent, so if it’s fringing, studs, crystals, or feathers you want she'll do her best to show your individuality in every garment. Pricing starts from as little £30. It's not just your clothes that can be added to as Mel from Melanie Richards Hair Boutique showed me. We've incorporated feathers in the hair which are not only available in this season’s neon trend but can be curled and styled to your desire. So, just because you're roughing it in a field there's really no reason to feel like you have to blend into the scenery. Let your individual style shine through and Happy Camping!

paparazzi Caught in the act? CHARITY WALKS, FESTIVALS AND CLUBBING… Face of ESP Simona Bajorinaite helped set off around 150 walkers at the second Pop Around Peterborough charity walk in aid of Arthritis Research UK. Organiser Michael Clarke told ESP – “The Boathouse was the perfect start and finishing location, which was complemented even more by the weather. It was great to see walkers of all ages. Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.” Emma Bothamley captured the action for ESP. The first Yaxley Festival was a huge success. Opened by local actor and Harry Potter star Warwick Davis the two day celebration attracted big crowds and it’s hoped it’ll become an annual event. Our photographer Mike Harris headed down there to join the fun. Meanwhile the nightlife action was captured at Edwards, Flares and Red Room on Broadway. Mitch Brewster did the honours behind the lens capturing an up for it crowd. The next Mixology night is on Friday June 28 when the Adana Twins come to play!

Sarah Tempest

She’s ‘Young and Beautiful’ – ESP’s Sarah Tempest looks at the rise and rise of Miss Lana Del Rey…

I

n 2010 a little known singer from New York posted a music video on YouTube that she’d filmed and edited herself on her MacBook. That video, Video Games, was a hit with music fans including Radio One’s Fearne Cotton and went viral, scoring 75 million views to date. Three years on, Lana Del Rey is the most written about female on the web (according to Google’s figures for 2012) and has never looked back.

Photo: Nicole Nodland

Born plain old Lizzy Grant, Lana Del Rey made her performance debut when she was 19 at an open mic night. “Somebody ran out after me and said – ‘You should come to a night I’m doing next week and play some songs for me’,” she said of that time and the rest, as they say, is history. It was around this time that she changed her name to the rather more exotic sounding Lana Del Rey. "I wanted a name I could shape the music towards,” she specified in a UK Vogue interview. "I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba – Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue." Since that time, Lana has sold over 4 million albums and 5 million singles, won an Ivor Novello award and this year added

a second Brit award to her list of accolades. She’s also fronted a fashion campaign for H&M, is the face of the Jaguar F-Type, which launched last month and has had a Mulberry handbag created in her honour. Not bad for a girl who grew up singing in her local church choir! She’s currently in the midst of a sell out European tour, the UK leg of which finished in May, but British fans of the enigmatic singer can still get their fix as she’s written and performed songs for the soundtrack of the Great Gatsby movie, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Also featuring music from Beyoncé, Will.i.am and Florence and the Machine, the soundtrack’s produced by none other than Jay-Z and Lana’s contribution, Young and Beautiful is described as ‘hauntingly melodious’. She collaborated with the film’s director, Baz Lurhmann in creating the song and says of the experience – “It was an honour to work with Baz Lurhmann on his amazing adaptation of one of the most extraordinary books ever written. The movie is highly glamorous and exciting; Rick Nowels and I were thrilled to write the song for the film.” Having achieved so much in her three short years in the limelight, it’s hard to imagine how Lana Del Rey could top the career heights that she’s achieved so far. But

not one to become complacent, she’s currently working on the follow up to her number one album Born to Die which she says will be “a more spiritual affair”. With her star riding so high, it’s bound to be a surefire hit and with so many projects in the pipeline, one thing’s for sure, we can expect to see a whole lot more of Miss Del Rey over the next few years. For more info on Lana Del Rey and forthcoming projects, follow her on Twitter @LanaDelRey or go to www.lanadelrey.com

Henry Cavill steps into the famous red boots of DC Comics’ most iconic hero to try and emulate some of the success of the recent Dark Knight trilogy. Christopher Nolan has lent a hand in an executive producer and writing capacity as this latest take on Krypton’s famous son tries to finally solidify his place in a current generation of cinema – after the mixed reaction to 2006’s Superman Returns. The future of a possible Justice League movie – DC’s equivalent to The Avengers – seems to be laying heavily on the shoulders of the latest incarnation of The Man of Steel, but 300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder may just be the man for the job.

All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

Russell Crowe has stepped into the shoes made famous by Marlon

Brando by tackling the role of Jor-El, with an impressive cast – including Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White – fleshing out what could be something quite special. With Michael Shannon playing the role of villainous General Zod, a new chilling theme tune, the promise of more action set-pieces, and a trailer that has truly whetted the appetite of fanboys – let’s hope this truly lives up to expectations. The lives of The Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman and even a Christian Bale or re-cast Batman could well depend on it...

The father and son team of Will and Jaden Smith combine forces in this thriller which is aiming to be the start of a new sci-fi franchise. This is the second post-apocalyptic Earth-based movie out in recent months – after Tom Cruise’s Oblivion – but this undoubtedly has more of a blockbuster feel about it. The Sixth Sense director M Night Shyamalan will hope to reverse his slide from fame by helming his first movie in three years – as young cadet Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) crash lands with his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) on an evolved Earth that hasn’t seen humanity for more than 1,000 years.

Brad Pitt takes on the undead – and a particularly tough sub-genre – to try and turn Max Brooks’ novel into a blockbuster movie. He stars as United Nations employee Gerry Lane, as armies and governments start to crumble with a massive zombie pandemic threatening to wipe out the human population. And these are the fast, ravenous, zombietypes seen in the likes of 28 Days Later, not the slow-plodding Romero ones you can simply jog past. Credit to Pitt – who’s supported in the movie by Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) and Bryan Cranston (Argo) – for trying something outside the box.

It may struggle to wrestle the comedy summer crown from The Hangover: Part III, but Seth Rogen and pals – including James Franco and Knocked Up cohorts Jonah Hill and Jay Baruchel – aim to give it a go as an impending apocalypse leaves six partying friends trapped in a Los Angeles house with the likes of Rihanna. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart their friendship as they struggle for survival – with comedic high-jinks no doubt ensuing. Superbad and The Pineapple Express scribe Evan Goldberg helps out Rogen on directorial duties.

One of the best new animations in recent years – complete with those lovable minions – gets the unsurprising sequel treatment as it goes head-to-head with Monsters University for summer boxoffice glory. Steve Carell’s Gru is recruited by the Anti-Villain league to take on a new super criminal (voiced by Benjamin Bratt after Al Pacino recently jumped ship due to creative differences). An impressive voice cast, which includes Bridesmaids’ Kristen Wiig, The Hangover’s Ken Jeong, and Brit stars Russell Brand and Steve Coogan, will hopefully build on the success of the terrific first outing.

ONLI REVIENE WS For the latest m from E ovie reviews SP, visi t: www.e spmag .co.uk/ review s

DEAD ISLAND: RIPTIDE (360/PS3/PC) Out now

Can you ever have too much of a good thing? Dead Island: Riptide doesn't seem to think so. This sequel to the hit 2011 first-person zombie slashing RPG original picks up directly after the climax of the first game – and it’s more of the same. But that's no bad thing if you’re a fan of the original, as dismembering zombies and scouring the vast island, be it alone or with up to three others via co-op, is still ridiculously satisfying.

#####

Whether you import your save or start from scratch, levelling up is addictive – and while the main story is slightly underwhelming, countless side quests and the monstrous 'Dead Zones' will quench your thirst for more blood.

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US (PS3/360/WIIU) Out now There were fears that a fighting game featuring DC Comics’ most iconic characters couldn’t be this good – but you’d be wrong. The developers behind Mortal Kombat have put together one of the most surprisingly immersive games of the year – featuring heroes such as Batman, Superman, The Flash and Wonder Woman, to villains such as The Joker, Lex Luthor and Bane – that oozes quality production values.

#####

Through story or battle modes, this is compelling stuff – and finishing off opponents as the Man of Steel high above the earth is quite literally out of this world.

METRO: LAST LIGHT (360/PS3/PC) Out now

This sequel nicely builds on the post-apocalyptic foundations laid by the 2010 original to provide another inventive first-person shooter that’s just that little bit different. Publishers Deep Silver showed confidence in developers 4A Games by picking this up from the now-defunct THQ – and even though it’s a tad linear, this world from the Dmitry Glukhovsky novel can be an engrossing experience. Sadly it’s hampered by a few bugs – crashes and frame-rate problems do give it an unfinished feel – which prevents this from ever reaching classic status.

#####

But its originality still makes this a slow-burner well worth your attention.

STAR TREK: THE GAME (PS3/360/PC) Out now

With a fresh story and a fully licensed voice cast – including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as playable characters Kirk and Spock – hopes of a Mass Effect-style experience were initially very high. Sadly it's linear stuff from the off, with fiddly controls not helping the predictable third-person 'cover and shoot' procession.

#####

Loyal Trekkies may still enjoy the battle with reptile-like enemies dubbed 'the Gorn', but it's unlikely to live long and prosper for long – unless you’re an absolute die-hard.

FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON (360/PS3/PC) Out now

There’s been a lot of hype surrounding this VHS-era downloadable homage (via XBLA and PSN) to action films of the eighties – and it deserves a lot of plaudits for its original tongue-in-cheek take on the genre. Built around the Far Cry 3 engine – without having anything directly to do with my favourite game of last year – you star as a part man, part machine, sergeant (played by The Terminator legend Michael Biehn) out to bring down a ruthless battalion of killer cyborgs.

#####

The hilarious cut-scenes and comedic touches do cleverly gloss over what’s ultimately only an above-average shooter – but it’s still well worth a playthrough.

Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviews of Call of Duty: Black Ops II & Assassin’s Creed 3.

Thanks to Andy Clucas for reviewing Dead Island: Riptide, and Star Trek: The Game.

Going boldly where pretty much everyone has been before, Star Trek: The Game is something of a damp squib.

HEALTH & VITALITY with Karen Devine

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

Ready for a spring clean to boost your get up and go? ESP’s Karen Devine busts the myths on detoxing… As I write this I have less than 24 hours to jet off to Spain to facilitate a detox week which I love with a passion, not only to meet people of like minds but those open to change and willing to take precious time out for self help and healing. I’m not writing here about how to detox – this has to be a personalised approach and taken with care, particularly if you have health issues and take medication. However, many people can safely make changes/additions to help the body power up its own healing capacity.

Our body does have its own inbuilt mechanisms designed by nature to do this – but you can’t expect a piece of machinery to be overworked like this, without oiling it or cleaning it. Take our cars, we need to get them serviced each year to clean out the plugs and oil, so what about our fluids such as lymph and blood? Personalised detox programmes are best as we all tolerate these toxins and their affects differently, and supplements must be carefully chosen to get things right. With that said, we can all have a ‘spring, summer, winter or autumn’ clean up. For us to help our body we have to provide it with good nutrients,

Detox myth busting

‘Detox’ has become the buzz word in recent years, and in many cases overused and misunderstood. I don’t class myself as an expert here but after 14 years studying and researching, lecturing and recently being asked to write new lectures on the subject, I can say with confidence it’s one of the most important aspects of supporting optimal health as our vitality depends on how well our systems are working and ultimately how well we detoxify and produce our cellular energy. We have to be able to capture the toxins, drain and eliminate them out of the body effectively otherwise they’re circulated back in! Our chemical world is growing at an alarming rate with more and more being introduced into our environment every year. Much of the research looks at the high toxic dose of the substance on the human body but not on the low ‘trace’ amounts that we take in on a consistent basis. Basically what we eat, drink, inhale, put on our skin and of course what’s produced in the body (by-products of metabolism, fungi, bacteria as well as stress hormones etc), has to be detoxified.

including essential proteins, fats, enzymes (lots of raw veggies and some fruits), vitamins and minerals and of course good hydration and fibre. You can add in broths, juices and smoothies if you want to enhance your diet further. And not forgetting to remove caffeine, sugars, junk foods, fizzy drinks, alcohol, high antigen foods such as gluten, soy, corn, milk products etc. Oh, and cigarettes, please don’t kid yourself by adding in some luxury nutrients and then have a few crafty fags during the day! If you experience headaches, lethargy or irritability this is not a detox reaction as many will claim – it is more likely a withdrawal from your addictions such as sugar, tea, coffee etc. What is crucial is that you stop (or reduce where you can) the sources of chemicals by making a few changes such as: • Remove the junk from your plate and palate (sugars, caffeine, processed foods and the like).

• Source organic foods if you can afford it. Vulnerable fruits such as berries are sprayed heavily with chemicals, as is lettuce and vulnerable leafy veg, whereas hardier fruits and veg such as avocado, melon and pineapple are more resilient, so you can mix and match to save money or buy more locally grown seasonal fruits and buy a veggie wash to help take off some residue. • Ditch plastic where possible, exchange cling film for greaseproof paper to wrap foods, and don’t heat foods in plastic trays, use glassware. Ditch plastic bottles and buy a good sports safe drinking bottle or other safe bottle. I will talk about plastic drinking bottles another time! • Ditch those nasty smelly chemicals you plug in the wall to give a scent and stop spraying the home, open windows or burn natural essence candles. • Reduce/avoid using hairsprays and spray deodorants, you can find many good essential oil roll on’s or natural deodorants on the market. • What are you slapping on your skin? The chemicals in some of our skincare products are full of toxic compounds, opt for more natural organic skincare where possible. Most of us can cut down on what we use anyway, one of the best tools I’ve found for soft skin is basically skin brushing – not only does it help lymphatic flow it sloughs off dead skin cells! Whilst I can fill ESP with information on reducing chemicals and boosting your detoxification capacity, I’ve only skimmed the surface for you here. If you’re going to have a spruce up, add meditation, yoga, a sauna, soothing music, keep yourself away from excess exercise and stress and give yourself a bit of down time too! Organically yours, Karen For more information www.karendevine.co.uk My new site is dedicated to detox and digestion along with some other pieces on nutrition and my new transformational coaching and meditation. I’m looking forward to sharing it with you once it is complete.

rainBoW BriGhtS This season is all about eye-popping summer brights; think Joseph and his Technicolor Dream Coat. From nail colours to lipstick, make sure you shine brighter than the sun this season. Nail It - As far as nails go during these sunshine months, anything goes and the brighter the better. Pick a colour and go crazy with it; reverse French, stripes and polka dots (my personal fave) are all set to be huge. Textured nails are also helping to hot up this summer. Nails Inc Feather Effect polish, available in four beautiful shades, is a great way to start. Made up of lots of strands of feather like particles it adds a pop of colour at the same time as creating a quill effect on your nails. Then there are the Nails Inc Bling It On Neon sets, £20 each, which contain a base colour polish, top coat and most importantly sparkly loose glitter in some amazingly bright colours ideal for summer holidays. Pure mani magic! Get Lippy – Bold, bright lips are the name of the game for summer 2013 with colour pop pouts taking over the catwalks. Whether it’s hot pink, pillar box red or crazy coral it’s a sure set way to update your look. My first choice coral shade is Barry M Lip Paint in shade 53 – a vibrant coral with a slight shimmer. Looks great for a relaxed day time look yet is easy to build up coverage for a bold blast of colour on nights out. For those of you who really want to stand out from the crowd I recommend Stila’s new After Glow Lip Colour, £12. Available in six funky colours, the crayon style applicator makes them effortless to apply and the formula has staining properties for a long last effect. They’re a whopping three times brighter than conventional colours to give you vibrancy by day but wait for it… they glow in the dark under UV light meaning your summer nights really will come alive. I know I’ll be taking one to Ibiza with me this month. Eye Popping – When you think of bright, and especially blue, eye shadow it may conjure up images of Pat Butcher but the time has now come to stop being afraid! Trial the trend with one of the high-pigmented Body Shop Colour Crush Eyeshadows. At just £7 a pop you can afford to try them all. For the more daring colouristas out there who want a full on blaze of colour check out MAC’s new Bold Brights Eyeshadow in Heroine (a powerful purple) or Ablaze (full-on fuchsia); a sure set way to get a ‘wow that’s bright, I need my sunglasses’ reaction.

Great GatSBy GroominG With the recent release of the epic film The Great Gatsby it seems that everyone, including men, have gone 1920’s crazy. So tap into your inner Gatsby or treat your dad to some dandy style this Father’s Day with a selection of gentleman’s grooming products from Lush… Think clean cut, slicked back hair and you’ll have the style of the twenties down to a T. Try Dirty Hair styling cream to help hold hair in place with a matt finish. The 1920’s dandy gent is also known for his smooth, cleanshaven face. Prepare your skin for a cut throat shave by exfoliating twice a week to remove dead skin cells and in-growing hairs. Lush’s Ocean Salt cleanser, infused with lime, sea salt and grapefruit, gives highly polished results for the ultimate well-groomed visage. The Gatsby lifestyle of late, alcohol fuelled nights might sound glamorous but can result in red, blemished and dehydrated skin – not so stylish. Apply Cosmetic Lad moisturises to calm, heal and protect your skin post shaving. For those true dandy dads out there who are donning a moustache, ensure his plumage is maintained in place with Ultabalm; after all no one likes drooping upper lip foliage. But, for the ultimate dandy persona and to set pulses racing dab on The Voice of Reason. This bourbon enriched fragrance is reminiscent of smoky jazz clubs with added notes of sandalwood and espresso. You’ll be sure to smell reassuringly oldfashioned!

Br-WoWzerS Model Cara Delevingne is well known for her spectacularly bold and bushy eyebrows which are now all the rage. In fact some women are so desperate to have the ‘Cara Brow’ that they’re resorting to having their eyebrows tattooed on and in some cases even surgery to disguise their pluck happy habits. But you’ll be pleased to hear that there really is no need to go to such extreme measures thanks to Along Came Betty’s Br-Wow kit. This amazing little compact kit allows you to shape, define and fix your brows for an uber- structured look. You can get brows that wow in just three easy steps… 1) Add a little colour to help shape your brow with the neutral duo 2) For definition apply a touch of wax 3) Set with a dusting of the translucent powder to soften to a hair like finish Available exclusively at Tesco, just £5.99.

Summer Scent of the month I’m a huge fan of Escada’s Limited Edition spring/summer scents they treat us to each year so I could not wait to get my hands on this year’s Cherry In The Air and was I disappointed? Hell no!

cherry. The perfume combines notes of black cherry, raspberries and even mandarin which adds a twist of citrus freshness to offset the almost marshmallow feel it has.

This new Eau De Toilette is fresh yet sweet and really captures the essence and heart of an actual

CAFÉ CLARKES IS LOOKING GOOD! The latest restaurant on the dining out scene in the city has thrown open its doors and we have to say we’re loving the look of the new Café Clarke’s at the Key Theatre! ESP went along to a packed preview opening which was a huge success and the team behind it – from Clarkes Restaurant and the Banyan Tree – haven’t looked back. Dinesh O’Dedra from the Banyan Tree told ESP – “The response has been absolutely awesome. There has been so much interest with people wanting to eat here long before we officially opened. It’s been brilliant and I’m so pleased with the new look of the restaurant too it’s all far better than I ever imagined!” With 70 covers and special theatre dining packages available it looks like chef Sam is set to be busy. Sam was part of the team at Clarkes restaurant on Lincoln Road

riva’s opening success anks to all our customers who attended our Wild West Night

Riva has moved into the former premises of I Toscanini in Eye from its previous home at the Key Theatre and reports coming in are good. The response so far has been amazing with the team telling us it’s all gone far better than anyone dared hope, and they’re recommending advance reservations regardless of the day of the week! There’s been a change to their Sunday opening hours to 12.00 till 8pm, which is extra to what they offered when based at The Key, and they’re now also open on Bank Holiday Mondays. Owner Chris Falco told ESP – “The satisfying part to it all is that Riva is welcoming back so many regulars who’ve told us that not only does the restaurant itself offer far more

character, our location coupled with our car park makes the whole experience nicer. “Local residents have also been outstanding; they’ve been making great use of having ‘a true taste of Italy’ on their doorstep over the last few weeks.” Riva is now offering seasonal specials over and above the a la carte menu, including sea bass fillets rolled with bacon served on a risotto marinara or grilled swordfish with insalata misto. Sounds gorgeous!

FESTIVAL PARADE Every year in June for almost 30 years, Stamford & District Kiwani's have organised the Stamford Festival Parade of Floats through our historic market town and this year’s event will be held on Saturday June 29. This year the committee want to make the festival an extra special occasion and are asking for YOUR participation in the parade either with a float, or just as part of a walking group. The parade’s a celebration of the town’s community and spirit and as this is now officially the best place to live in Britain, what better way to celebrate than to generate a true community atmosphere on the day. It doesn’t involve much effort or expense and if you’ve entered before you will know this feeling. If you haven’t entered before now is the time to do so and contribute to a true community event in your town. The theme for this year’s parade is 'Cartoon Characters', so dust off those Mickey Mouse ears you got from Disneyland and come join the festivities! For more info and an entry form to participate in the parade please visit www.visitstamford.com/stamford-festival-parade-2 Alex Jones

Carlos ‘El Tano’

S

itting quietly in a unit down Vicarage Farm Road is one of the city’s most accomplished and travelled musicians, Carlos Parlato, ‘El Tano’ to his friends. However, to confine his talent to the city would perhaps undersell this world renowned percussionist and drummer having played alongside music legends Gloria Estefan, Rickey Martin and Christina Aguilera, he truly is a global talent. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina he first started drumming at the age of six, influenced by his two uncles. They’re both musicians and Carlos used to hear them play when he was very young and wanted to do the same. His mum gave him a saucepan and a wooden stick to calm him down one day and the rest is history. His formal musical education began at the Berklee College of Music in the United States. “There were some cool musicians around the campus at that time,”

42

www.espmag.co.uk

Carlos tells me. Names like Horatio Hernadez, (Dizzy Gillespie) Denis Chambers (Parliament and Funkadelic) Dom Famularo (BB King) and Chester Thompson (Phil Colins) which is quite and an inspiration in itself. He started working for the Warner record label when he was just 16 years-old, a prodigious talent indeed. “I was 16 years-old and one of their resident drummers, I saw stars every day it was incredible!” Time soon saw him touring with Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin. “Both Ricky and Gloria were really nice people to work with – they had very good personalities which is just as important as making the music. They both have a huge passion for music which is felt by anyone they work with. They don't have huge egos like some famous musicians.” To try and put that into perspective she was a star on both sides of the Atlantic and topping the charts on both

sides so those whose memory serves them well will remember her face was all over the place. Later he toured with Rickey Martin another global mega star known to all. At this point Carlos’ English superlatives are expressed in head shakes, smiles and hand gestures such was the euphoria of being in such a position. Suffice to say he recorded on albums with him between 1981 – 1995. By 1988 he’d become a professor of drums and percussion at the Direccion de Cultura University in Buenos Aires but again the stars would come a calling in the shape of Christina Aguilera. The 1999 album Mi Reflejo features Carlos and he toured with her during 1998 – 1999. “Christina is a standard very good person she is hyped up by the media to be a diva just for publicity. Music is her main focus and most important to her,” Carlos tells me.

All in all he’s featured on 135 albums over the years – check out his work with Latin American giants Los Tulipanes with whom he worked between 2000 and 2003 – how many stars can say they’ve achieved that kind of total? Very few. What it does is stand testimony to the quality of his playing that bands want him to play live and to session, a feat rarely heard of these days and may never be achieved by people on any instrument in the future. Family in Peterborough brought him here, his brother and uncle have lived in the country for more than 35 years, and some family came after the war. His mum, dad and family also live here. Carlos has made this his home for just over 10 years where he plays nationally with his band G-Tano occasionally and played Glastonbury with Kissmet. He also played alongside Emerson Lake and Palmer in drum clinics, however he now indulges his other passion in music, teaching. Carlos has always spent lots of time teaching kids with disabilities especially Autism. A true case of a man giving back to a profession that’s been good to him. From his studio and teaching business in Vicarage Farm Road he immerses himself in the kids and in running a high quality recording studio. “Yes the business matters and that we record to a perfect quality but the kids matter to me, it is good to see them smile and be happy and learn.” You can also learn drums and percussion from him, and I say this without hype – he is a real master, this guy is the real deal. He’s now rebranded his studio as the El Tano Music Academy with business support from fellow musician Lorna Stockdale who added – “I’m really proud to be leading the expansion with Carlos – his passion for music just shines through.” Contact Carlos and his team through www.eltanodrums.com or call him on 01733 873147.

FESTIVAL OF THE MONTH THE BIG SOUL WEEKENDER 14-16 JUNE Well I guess a few of you out there wouldn’t think this my normal cuppa but we went last year and had a great time. The Big Soul Weekender at The Plough in Farcet Fen promises to be another weekend of classic chart soul and Motown interspersed with some rarer Northern Soul club classics. Yeah there are live bands as well; Friday night has a Blues Brothers Tribute which you all love. Come on you do love them, Shake Your Tail Feather, Hold On I’m Coming, Minnie the Moocher…the song list goes on and on, what is there not to like? Saturday has The Ultimate Temptations – again classic songs, Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone, My Girl, Ain’t too Proud to Beg, Wish it Would Rain, again class, pure class. You also get loads of DJs Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday. Names you know as well Julz, Skip Stuart, Steve Jason, Paul Donnelly,

Martin Sanford and my old mate Neil Bull just to name a few. Now I don’t profess to be a massive Motown and Northern fan (I have been to the Stax Museum in Memphis twice so we are talking different there) but last year the crowd was great – friendly, knowledgeable, they were up for a good laugh and that’s what matters.

• Weekly live music (see ESP Gig Guide) • Live Sports – showing all major Premiership and Championship games • All real ales £2.20 per pint Join our Facebook site – Dragon,Werrington

For the weekend you’re talking £20… yes £20 and that includes camping which quite a few did last year. Just Friday tickets are £10, Saturday £12 and Sunday £5 so it makes sense to bag a weekender pass. As I said it’s at the Plough which ain’t a million miles away and you can get your tickets from there www.theploughonline.com or phone 01733 844307.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Keith says...

A packed house at the Cock Inn, Werrington, saw Hooker in a celebratory mood as the band’s keyboard player, Pasq Chiarizia, celebrated his 50th birthday in fine style. Nice to see classic rock can be played by a man wearing a giant tin badge on his chest (‘I’m 50’)! The addition of the keyboards has certainly enabled Hooker to expand their set list with some great variety to the music.

PURPLE ZEPPELIN! Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin – together on the same bill. A dream gig that never was – until now! The music of two of the greatest heavy rock bands of all time will be brought together by Purple Zeppelin. They appear on Saturday June 15 at Stamford Corn Exchange starting at 7pm. Many years have passed since the last UK gigs from the classic line-ups of both bands, and the original Led Zeppelin in particular are the band that I most wish I’d seen live, but didn’t.

SHAKE HANDS ERIC RELEASE SINGLE

You can also catch Shake Hands Eric on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s Tom Simkins show on June 22.

Purple Zeppelin are four talented and versatile musicians who bring great showmanship to their performances. All have been gigging and session musicians for many years and are genuine admirers of both Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Since 2005 they’ve been selling out venues up and down the country and their reviews have been tremendous. As far as I know, this is their first appearance in our area.

To hear the latest single, visit www.reverbnation.com/shakehandseric

Tickets available from Stamford Corn Exchange in Broad Street. Box office phone 01780 766455.

Local band, Shake Hands Eric, have released a new download single, Turning Down the Thunder and like previous releases it’s receiving wide internet play. The band whose own compositions remind me of a cross between The Eagles and Crowded House are Richard Young, singing and guitar, Andy Tonkin on piano, Mark Hurrell with bass, Ken Robson on lead guitar, and Les Potton on drums.

Photo: Mike Harris

They’re next scheduled for two gigs on Saturday June 8. Firstly in the afternoon at Field of Dreams in Whittlesey and then doing the late night music from 11pm at North Street Bar in Peterborough.

Pasq, as many will know, is multi-talented, being the owner of Verso Hair salon in Westgate. So I thought of some songs that Hooker could have featured on the night. They include: Whitesnake’s ‘Hair I Go Again’ First Cut is the Deepest Tinted Love

Purple Zeppelin bring a ‘full on’ two and a half hour show, with costume changes for each band and it also comes complete with Ritchie Blackmore’s lute, Jimmy Page’s twin neck guitar and a very special violin bow solo.

PLOUGHMAN’S CHARITY BEER FEST

The Ploughman in Werrington Centre is holding its annual Charity Beer Fest on the weekend of July 4 to 7.

And what a bill of live bands throughout the whole weekend… Friday Night: Hooker (celebrate 20 years.)

The pub will be presenting 59 + ales, ciders and there will also be German Jeff's BBQ, a charity auction and live music!

Saturday Day: Nil By Mouth (all doctors, nurses and consultants) Saturday Night : Motor City Vipers

Sunday Day: Children of The Revolution Sunday Night: Citizen Smith It starts with a beer preview night on Thursday night and all money raised goes to the Kelly Simmonds Fund at RSSC @Papworth Hospital.

Comb Together Hair do you go to my Lovely? AND anything by Scissor Sisters, Cutting Crew, Style Council or Blow Dry Monkeys. Any other suggestions? The band have another celebration – their 20th together – at the Ploughman in Werrington in early July. It’s the pub’s Charity Beer Festival, details to the right on the event. So it made me wonder whether there are any more celebrations for Hooker this year? Rumour has it that Trev and his orange boiler suit have been together for 25 years!

Not long to go music fans and we’re getting excited! The countdown to this year’s mega free music event The Willow Festival (TWF) is now on with new bands being added by the day. But do we hear cries of ‘Hope the flaming weather improves…’? Never fear folks the organisers have it all sorted. Not only are there seven marquees giving cover to thousands while various bands take to the stages, but they’re bringing in the most enormous structure that’ll provide cover for around 17,000 music lovers watching the main acts – so whatever our good old British summer throws at us, rain or shine, your viewing pleasure won’t be marred by a soaking or sunburn! We like it.

“Interest in The Willow Festival generally is really picking up and from what we’re hearing I think we’re looking at some huge crowds over the weekend.”

You may have been along to some of The Willow Festival Acoustic Showcase sessions at venues across the area and had your musical appetite whetted, well they’ve proved so successful a special acoustic marquee has been added to the line-up.

It’s not just music of course there’ll be plenty of food and drink, stalls and fair ground rides including a brand new mega ride which we’re told will blow you away!

TWF organiser Mark Ringer told ESP – “I’m really pleased with this addition and the chance to provide another outlet for even more music and its thanks to venues like The Crown, Mama Liz's in Stamford, North Street Bar, The Palmserston Arms and The Solstice who’ve got behind it.

• Monday – Poker night from 7.30pm • Wednesday – Steak night from 6pm • Thursday – Quiz night from 8.30pm • Friday – Fish & Chip night from 6pm • Sunday – Sunday Roast 12.00pm – 3pm • Real Ales • Extensive Beer Garden • Fresh homemade food

This fabulous free – yes that’s FREE festival – takes place over three days on The Embankment in Peterborough from July 12 – 14 and will showcase in excess of 150 artists with a big emphasis on local talent as well as plenty from further afield being signed up every week. Some of those already on the bill are Paolo Morena, The More I See, The Floe, Silver Street (from Norway!), Thumpermonkey, Groove Cartel, Straw Bear, Echoes of Floyd and Aladdinsane.

ESP is proud to sponsor this great family orientated music festival in the city and will keep you up to date with all the latest on www.espmag.co.uk but look out for a full feature in the July issue. For more info visit www.willowfestival.org.uk and their facebook page.
