The likes of Tony Hunter, Kevin King and Jason Porter have been involved with hockey in Peterborough from the very beginning and other players like Mark Salisbury and Jon Cotton have come through the junior development. “We also had excellent imports from America like Tim Peacock and Dwayne Newman who made special memories here. I’ve managed to stay in contact with several players over the years and the buzz of playing hockey has never left us. When I tabled the idea of forming a ‘vets’ team everyone got excited and it’s just snowballed since then.” There’s sure to be a special atmosphere at the game with Bracknell and it’s an occasion ice-hockey fans shouldn’t miss. Tickets are £7 (adults) and £5 for under 16s. Family tickets are £20. Face off is at 4.30pm. For more info visit www.peterboroughpirates.co.uk
Boxing fans are in for a treat next month when former WBC light heavyweight champion John Conteh takes centre stage at Radius on Thursday July 21. He’s the latest in a long line of boxing legends brought to the city by promoter Kevin Sanders and John I’m told is one of the best after dinner speakers on the circuit. He retired from professional boxing in 1980 with a professional record of 34 wins, one draw and four defeats. At 19 Conteh won gold at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games and his world title crown came four years later against Argentine Jorge Ahumada at Wembley Stadium. For tickets, call Kevin on: 07872 601467.
THE FUNK STRIKES BACK Graham Fairbairn is the man when it comes to organising a gig brimming with nostalgia and raising a chunk of money for charity at the same time. His Gables reunion nights have been packed to the rafters and next up: The Funk Strikes Back, Saturday June 25 at The Brewery Tap, promises to be another not to be missed. There’ll be two rooms on the go. The main room will offer up classic funk, soul, rare groove, New Jack Swing and house music from the 70s to the early 90s. While the Tap Room vibe will be pumping out post-Gables era tunes from R&B, acid jazz and garage to nu-jazz/soul and soulful/deep house. On the decks will be old timer Eddie Nash, Mark Goodliff, Stuart Skipworth, Dil Gloster, Sean Johnson and Graham himself. The money raised will be donated to the MacMillan Cancer Trust. Entry’s just a fiver or as much over £5 that you’d like to donate. To get a flavour of what tunes you’re likely to hear on the night check out the event page on Facebook.

EGGS OVER TOO EASY FOR BREAKFAST CLUB Yes, they may look a bit University Challenged but somehow these guys (or one of them at least) romped to victory as the winning team at the British Heart Foundation Quiz and Disco, which was organised in memory of our friends and loved ones Ando and Katie. The main room at The Fleet was packed with at least 20 quiz teams battling it out for glory and the one I was in finished fourth after a gruelling double tie-breaker question dropped us from second place. Everyone who took part helped to raise wads of cash for the BHF and I reckon winners ‘The Breakfast Club’, who will be favourites to retain their title in 2017, should continue to raise money for the cause and do a city quiz circuit. What do you think lads?
MY WORD OF THE MONTH
EUROS
And I’m not referring to the cash kind. Euro 2016 (football) is upon us and it’ll be more of what we’re used to: unrealistic expectations set by the media, BBQ’s in the rain, complaining neighbours, Tesco running out of beer, broken metatarsal, bookies making a mint, unnecessary convoys, referees costing games, acid reflux and Carlo celebrating too soon.
NEW BAR IS STILL IN THE WORKS, BUT COMING SOON! I’m always eager to see a new venue open up and they couldn’t keep me out of the new Stoneworks bar, even though it’s still a work in progress. This brand new independently run bar in the former Ladbrokes building in Church Street is due to open very soon. Peterborough lad Sean Page and his business partner Steve Saldana are working hard on the building they promise me will house a genuine alternative to the city’s other watering holes. The focus will be on quality instead of quantity. During the day they’ll have super fast WiFi and home made soft drinks, but will be focusing more on sales of bottles and cans for people to take home and enjoy. When it comes to attention to beer detail, we should be in for a treat. Sean believes more and more people are interested in what they’re drinking, the story and brand behind it and how it tastes. This means we’ll be spoilt for choice with a range of high quality craft beers (local, national and
international) and a selection of high quality wine, cider and spirits. For cocktail lovers like yours truly, this could be my haven because Sean’s intentions are to only serve original cocktails from the vintage era of the 1920s. I’ve been to bars in America that only sell drinks from back in the day and this blend of nostalgia and novelty is a winning combination. The all important bar snacks won’t be skimping on quality either. We’re talking cheese, meat and bread platters that’ll reflect local and international tastes. I’m already foaming at the mouth. As for entertainment, The Stoneworks will be putting on weekly quizzes based on specific subjects, plus there’ll be retro video game league nights and educational talks and taster evenings where you can learn about and sample wine, beer, cheeses and other delights. There’s a market for this in our city centre so respect to Sean and Steve for having the appetite to try something different.
All for one… last time!

The role of D’Artagnan has evolved and become more challenging for the actor, something Luke is relishing.
T
he BBC’s Musketeers has built up a huge fanbase, and plenty of female ones for our Luke in particular! It’s felt like a long time for this eagerly awaited third, and sadly final series, but Luke says it’ll be well worth it. “Series three is set four years after series two, and Paris has been at war with Spain. It’s a completely different place and the Red Guard has taken over from the Musketeers on the streets. “There are different levels of baddies in this series. There is a real ruthlessness to the villains this year, which has been explored in the last two series, but not to this level.”
“He’s very affected by the state of Paris, it’s not what he fought for and he takes this personally. Constance is now in the garrison with the new cadets that she looks after. D’Artagnan takes them under his wing and I think that’s the birth of him becoming one of the greatest Musketeers ever to have lived, as is said in history, as it says in the books. In series three, he is on a journey to become the best, whether it’s to train other cadets or proving himself in certain situations, he’s fighting for the top and wants to make a better life for himself and a better Paris.” After four years, a war-torn Paris has become a powder keg ready to explode. Refugees have flocked to the city in search of sanctuary. Food is scarce. Black market profiteering is rife. But the city's governor, Phillipe Feron (Rupert Everett), is only too happy to exploit it all for his own ends with the support of his Red Guard thugs and the amoral gangster Lucien Grimaud (Matthew McNulty).
Luke first shot to fame in Channel 4’s Skins seven years ago but his popular character Freddie seems like a distant memory as Luke has gone on to carve out a successful acting career and helped make The Musketeers a huge success. He believes the series has the perfect mix for a successful TV show. “I think it’s the relationships and the foundations, the camaraderie, the brotherhood, the action and the romance. It still continues even though the series has grown and the characters have evolved. All the elements continue to be there and when you put it all together, you’ve got the Musketeers.” The former Walton school pupil has become one of the most popular characters in the swashbuckling adventures and has ably taken on all aspects from horse riding to stunts and battle sequences. It’s every boy’s dream. “My costume is much hotter this year as its two levels of thick padding, but I like how warrior like I look!” says Luke. “Howard (Charles) said it reminds him of the SAS and I really like all the buckles.”
16
www.espmag.co.uk
No adventure tale would be complete without a little romance though and Luke says D’Artagnan will be getting back together with Constance once again. “They haven’t seen each other for four years but the wedding ring is still there! They write to each other backwards and forwards over the course
of the war. There is still a lot of room for that relationship to grow. At the end of the first episode, there is a very tender moment where he asks if she has missed him. Considering how they got together, it isn’t an unacceptable thing to ask! She’s very different to how she was in the first and second series; she had her husband hanging over her head, and then an adulterous relationship. Constance is a much stronger character as she has been forced to look after the garrison on her own. She’s an empowered woman who has had to fight.” We can’t wait to see Luke back in action and to see how this great series draws to a close, so don’t miss the third series of The Musketeers on BBC One every Saturday!

AN EVENING WELL SPENT AT LOCH FYNE Sat in the cool and stylish patio at the famous seafood restaurant in Elton, Loch Fyne, my dining companion (younger brother!) and I felt that we had been momentarily whisked off to the Mediterranean. The shiny cutlery and the gorgeous sunshine, all added to a perfect evening and in a lovely setting. The Loch Fyne business started life as a small oyster bar on the banks of the loch – a venture by Johnny Noble, the owner of the historic Ardkinglas Estate on the west coast of Scotland, and his colleague Andy Lane, a fish farmer and biologist and

The setting in Elton is the perfect location to enjoy a delicious fish experience accompanied by a crisp white wine. During our lazy and
relaxed evening, we tried the mussels in cream, white wine, garlic and herbs, the pan-fried chilli and garlic prawns served with lemon, oil and granary bread and finally, the whole roasted sea bass with roasted sweet pickled vegetables, smoked paprika and sautéed potatoes. If you enjoy fresh, zesty and vibrant flavours, you’ll be perfectly at home with the food served at Loch Fyne. The tenth series of Britain’s Got Talent has proved a real winner. This series has brought to light some amazing acts, some truly terrible ones and one or two stunners (husky voiced singer Josh Curnow or Saulo Sarmiento and his amazing aerial pole routine anyone?!) Judge Amanda Holden has been on the show since the start and has once again been rocking some daring outfits, flirting with contestants and making her mark with the dream team of judges – Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams – as well as still shedding plenty of tears. “I think at the time it was quite new to have a female judge who didn’t stop crying, I set the trend for crying. And I never got a deal with Kleenex!” jokes Amanda. Together they scoured the country for another winning act to follow in the footsteps of Susan Boyle, Paul Potts, Diversity and Pudsey the dog to name
a few, as well as secure an incredible £250,000 and the opportunity to perform at the Royal Variety Performance 2016. After ten years judging on TV Amanda says she still loves all that the show brings out in the nation – “Britain has evolved and got worse in a sense, but in a good way. All the mad stuff is just crazy and all the good stuff is so imaginative, so intelligent, so clever but not pretentious. “We take the show seriously but none of us take ourselves seriously. I think the acts don’t either. There’s that self-deprecation underneath most of the acts where you can laugh and know it’s just a bit of a giggle really. I think as long as it stays like that, it will work. It’s the heart of Britain, I think.” At the very start of this series Amanda was quick to press her Golden Buzzer for a young girl who
sang a musical theatre number and confesses she’s a real sucker for kids and for musical theatre. “It was my heart telling me to do it, you can let your head interfere with your life all the time, I don’t and I am always in trouble because of it, I listened to my heart and pressed the buzzer and I don’t have any regrets. Although I have to say there have been a number of times since that I have gone, ‘Oh my god, I would have pressed my buzzer for that’ because it’s been an incredible year.” Never afraid to put Mr Cowell in his place when necessary, Amanda caused a stir when she doused the head judge in water. “He was laughing his head off but his make-up artist, literally had steam coming out of her ears! She was so cross! I apologised to her. I got told off by everyone and he actually said,
‘No, I am happy to sit here’, he wanted to sit there and do the rest of the show because he looked hot in a wet shirt and he knew it, but they made him change his shirt.” Reflecting back, was there a moment when Amanda knew the show was going to be so successful? “When Paul Potts came out and said who he was and what he was, he was in this really scruffy suit, he had literally come from work, and then he opened his mouth and he sang, I knew it was a knock-out moment. At that point I thought that this was about people with hidden talent, who is not going to love it?” It’s already highly likely Amanda will be back in her judge’s chair next year so let’s wait and see if series 11 can top the last decade!

and on an unprecedented scale – which could put the world on the brink of extinction. That’s despite the nations of Earth having collaborated on an immense defence strategy using the recovered alien technology left behind after the last devastating invasion – known as the war of 1996. Either way, it’s definitely gonna be war… and it ain’t gonna be pretty. Fingers-crossed this is a popcorn-munching blockbuster spectacle like the first film…
WARCRAFT: THE BEGINNING
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS
GODS OF EGYPT
The massively multiplayer online PC gaming phenomenon that is Warcraft, gets the blockbuster movie treatment. The peaceful realm of Azeroth – led by Travis Fimmel’s (from TV series Vikings) Anduin Lothar – stands on the brink of war, as its civilisation faces a fearsome race of orc warrior invaders fleeing their dying home to colonise another.
The ass-kickin’ turtles are back for the inevitable sequel – after the 2014 reboot did solid boxoffice business. TV’s Arrow star Stephen Amell debuts as Casey Jones alongside Megan Fox’s returning April O’Neil, as the team not only tackle Shredder – and his new mutants Bebop and Rocksteady – but the menacing extra-terrestrial presence of Krang.
This big-budget biblical spectacle bombed bigger than Exodus at the US box-office, but with Gerard Butler headlining they’re hoping it might make a bit this side of the pond. Butler stars as the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, and it’s up to a young warrior (Brenton Thwaites) and powerful god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) to stop him.

It may show a few signs of self-indulgence – which leads to repetitiveness – towards the end, but this is nit-picking for what is essentially a classic slice of role-playing action. DOOM (X1/PS4/PC)
This next-gen reboot of the game that pioneered the first-person shooter genre pays fitting homage to the legend. The single-player campaign gleefully captures the essence of what made Doom stand out many years ago – as you’re sent straight to nerve-jangling demonic hell with a plethora of iconic weaponry but limited ammo and health packs to survive – and on this front it absolutely delivers.
The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.
####
Unfortunately the multiplayer provides a very lacklustre experience, which is refreshingly offset by the excellent SnapMap level editor – which inventively allows you to customise gameplay. It might not quite offer anything truly innovative in gaming terms – but it shows this franchise is a long way from doomed.
BATTLEBORN (X1/PS4/PC)
Battleborn fires out a worthy, but flawed, firstperson shooter from the acclaimed makers of Borderlands. It’s generally at the better end of a mixed bag, by providing a plethora of diverse combatants to get your teeth into within this colourfully chaotic setting, but the single player and multiplayer modes – while fun to play – have a wafer-thin story and lack of modes respectively.
Two unique sites and different styles of gaming. Fight in and around buildings or in the woods and undergrowth. The games run with two teams, each are given objectives which they have to try and achieve.

THE MAN THEY CALLED
MR ODE ON This month ESP’s Marc Hernandez celebrates one of the forgotten faces from Peterborough's entertainment scene… In ESP's 200th issue, Michael Turner was our 'mystery man' reading a copy of the magazine, but 40 years ago this month he became general manager of the Peterborough Odeon (now Broadway Theatre). Over the next 13 years he turned it into one of the top cinemas in the country, brought star names to events at the East of England Showground and helped raise thousands of pounds for local charities with regional premieres. Now retired to the Suffolk countryside, he spoke to me about his movie memories. "I came to Peterborough in June 1976 to run the Odeon. At the time I'd been in the business for seven years and have to say I went on to have my best times in Peterborough. It was a great place to be, both my children went to Jack Hunt school and we had a great family life there. There was a certain image to being a cinema manager, at weekends you'd be there at 6pm in your evening dress suit (tuxedo, black tie) so when people would see me there or around town, they'd recognise me and to them I was ‘Mr Odeon’, but look, I loved the movies, the whole environment was something I absolutely embraced. Every day was different and during my time I never got what you'd call 'that Monday morning feeling'." Michael took over at the Odeon from the late Gordon Roebuck, who he's quick to acknowledge.
"Gordon went to run the Odeon Nottingham, but was a great help to me. He also came up with one of the best pieces of publicity in Peterborough I've ever seen. When Jaws was playing to packed audiences across the road at the ABC, Gordon was on the front page of the local paper sitting on the steps of the Odeon, holding a fishing rod with the headline 'FISHING FOR BUSINESS'."
A flare for marketing – Michael with 'Orville the flying albatross' from Disney's The Rescuers. A big hit with families during the summer of 1977.
By 1977 Michael was attracting headlines of his own for the Odeon. Competitions to win trips to Pinewood Studios, magnums of champagne when attendance records were broken and the chance to travel to London to meet Hollywood legend Gregory Peck on the red carpet at the Leicester Square Odeon. "One of my strong points was marketing and publicity, but the Odeon also had a lot of very good marketing people at head office so I'd always ask about what was possible and it would develop from there. Sometimes it'd be something small like free cinema tickets, other times it'd be something big like a visit to a film studio or a premiere." In February 1978, he acquired the nickname 'Thunderball Mike' after being awarded the Thunderball Trophy. The highest honour the Rank organisation (owners of the Odeon chain) could give one of its staff. Named after the Bond film, the award was given for ‘Outstanding management including publicity, press coverage and continuous public relations’. Out of the 50 Odeon cinemas in the UK at the time he was one of only five other Odeon Managers to receive the accolade.
In 1987, the Peterborough Odeon celebrated its 50th Anniversary with the regional premiere of the Bruce Willis comedy Blind Date. Michael pictured holding the cake was joined by his two Odeon predecessors Derek Williams and Gordon Roebuck. Back row Margaret Perkins (Mayoress), MP Brian Mawhinney, Rex Perkins (Mayor) and Michael's late wife Carol.

"I had a great relationship with the local press so every time they ran a story connected with the Odeon, I'd send copies to head office. I remember the Thunderball Trophy very well and in fact when I left Peterborough to run the Ipswich Odeon I had it up on the wall there… until some b****** nicked it!"

The late 70s and 80s were a golden time for cinema in Peterborough. Attendance records were broken and there was a real buzz of excitement for the latest big screen releases. When the original Star Wars film was first shown people starting queuing at 8am, five hours before the first showing at 1pm! "I was never really into sci-fi, but what Star Wars did for the movies, well you can't complain about can you?! We had Peter Mayhew (Chewbaca from Star Wars) at the East of England one year, but lots of others. Bernard Lee and Desmond Llewelyn (M and Q in the Bond films), Disney always had a film out in the summer so we'd always get a lot of characters from their latest film, and another popular one was Bobby Moore who came to promote Escape to Victory. It's funny thinking about Peter Mayhew, because when I saw the new Star Wars film I think he was probably in it more than Harrison Ford!"
His time at the Odeon came to an end in November 1989. After thousands of films he moved on to run the Odeon, Ipswich and the newly built Showcase became Peterborough's go-to cinema. In 1994 Turner celebrated 25 years of service with the Odeon and Lord Richard Attenborough presented his long service award at an event in London. Now in his early seventies, Michael's passion for cinema is as strong as ever. "I consider myself a cinema veteran and I still love going to the movies. Looking back I had 30 years in the business, starting in Liverpool, then onto Scotland, Leeds, Peterborough and then Ipswich, but for me personally, I have to say my happiest times were in Peterborough."

DRIVING UP STANDARDS
TWO WHEELS A TORNADO AND A CORTINA

Our man Mikey Clarke has taken the reigns for Pride and Joy this month while I’ve been flirting with some show beauties.
FLYING THE FLAG Mikey Clarke
ESP’s Mikey Clarke slides into the hot seat for this month’s feature and catches up with our own Austin Powers... to make.“If the day came where I could afford an upgrade I would be very sad to see it go as it’s a fun car,” he told me.
I
f you’ve seen a Union Flag Mini cruising around the streets of Peterborough, it may have belonged to Andy Taylor. Andy’s Mini Cooper S R53 1.6 Supercharged – to be precise – is this month’s Pride and Joy.
He bought the Mini at the beginning of January this year after someone reversed into his old car when it was parked up and wrote it off. Andy told me,“The exterior was a huge selling point and made me feel so excited.” He continued, “Mini cars are becoming a tradition in our family as my brother is the manager of Specialist Cars Mini in Stevenage. Obviously a great salesman! I didn’t have a specific car that I was particularly looking for and my car history is varied – such as a Nissan Micra, Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Astra, Volkswagen Golf, Peugeot 206cc and a Rover 216!” Despite a long list of varied cars, this one is Andy’s favourite. “It’s the best car that I’ve ever owned and it’s the first car I’ve had that has had six forward gears. It’s in great condition and I love the fact that it has a supercharger. The spot lights on the front came with it and they make me feel like I’m driving a rally car.” Andy isn’t completely against the idea of a new car, but I don’t think it would be an easy decision for him
34
www.espmag.co.uk
I wondered if his Pride and Joy got a good reaction from people on the streets.“Yes,” he said.“My family find it fun to watch out for people who do a double take or point at it as we go by. You can definitely see us coming. My two boys think I would look great dressed up as Austin Powers in it whilst heading off to save the world.” With every great thing, there’s usually a small downside too. “It’s such a joy to drive and handles the corners brilliantly. Plus maintenance is quite easy. The only downside is that it’s quite thirsty for fuel. This is the first car I’ve had where I have given it a regular wash!”
Andy recently made a dream become a reality. “Ever since I got the Union Jack Mini I have wanted to take it for a drive round central London and simply show it off and feel patriotic at the same time,” he told me. “We did this last weekend and it was such fun! We drove it down Abbey Road, past Buckingham Palace, round Trafalgar Square, past the Houses of Parliament and Elizabeth Tower, along the Embankment and then over Tower Bridge. We got some great pictures and had a fun time! We definitely caught the attention of a lot of tourists and some even stepped in the road to take a picture as we went by.”
Bike porn doesn’t come any better than the annual MCN Festival of Motorcycling at the Peterborough Arena – and it was so good I went twice. This year MCN tweaked the site plan, which made it easier to get around and not miss anything. And the tea and biscuits in the press office were a vast improvement on last year’s too (thanks Emma)! Riders flock to this event to pick up bargain clothing – even if they don’t need it like yours truly. I now have enough motorcycle jackets for each day of the week. It would help if I actually rode my bike more than one day a month. I need to have a word with myself I know. The other obvious draw for me (apart from would-be grid girls doing PR) is the chance to get my leg over some new machinery. Several iron horses got me all revved up but the one that lured me the most was the Ducati Scrambler. This is a bike I’m gagging to ride and I’m hoping to get a taste when the new Peterborough Ducati dealership opens this month. Another reason for making my double visit was to grab some face time with former Moto GP star Colin Edwards (thanks for sorting Sarah but where was my beer?!) The ‘Texas Tornado’ was special guest at the show and he captained a USA team who took on Team GB in the arena for the Transatlantic Trophy series. Unfortunately, Colin was on the losing side but his efforts were still good enough to earn him a cold beer while we sat watching motocross and chatted about this season’s Moto GP.
Pep Cipriano
“Colin, can you get me into Valentino’s motorhome at the British GP?” “Err…no Pep.”
It’s early days Colin but who do you fancy for this year’s title? “It’s a difficult one. I’d really love to see Valentino (Rossi) win it, as he’s my old teammate and after how the season ended for him in Valencia I think he’s earned at least one more championship before he retires.” I’d agree. He’s seems to be riding more aggressively too this season? “Yes, he’s hungrier than ever and is still motivated to win. What happened to him in Valencia has made him even more determined. But the main thing that’s helping him this season is the switch to Michelin tyres. The tyres give him more confidence on the front end and compliment his riding style.”
(COLIN) Actually, he sacked his janitor. How are you at cleaning toilets?” (ME) “I’ll wipe his bum if I have to. Anything to meet him. Keep talking…”
But obviously current world champion Lorenzo and 2014 champion Marquez will have something to say? “Of course. Lorenzo is sublime. Once he’s in front he’s virtually unstoppable and he rarely crashes. Marquez is still fighting with his bike but he’s had a great start to the campaign too. I think Lorenzo will be the one to beat again this year though.” And what do you make of Lorenzo’s move to Ducati for 2017? “I think he’ll surprise a lot of people. He has a natural ability to quickly adapt to a bike and his consistency will be key. You can’t rule him out for being a contender. He’s experienced, he’s a treble world champion and he’s fast. The Ducati is improving all the time too, so I think it’ll be an exciting package.”

Across town the Yaxley Festival was absolutely heaving and organisers should be really proud of putting on a superb event yet again. There was something for everyone and for me it was the classic car show that really got my motor going. This year’s event saw more cars and bikes showing than ever before. There were some absolute corkers on display but one that really caught my eye was this Crayford Ford Cortina. It had a white stripe and I guess you could liken it to a UK convertible version of Starsky and Hutch’s Ford Torino! The classic theme continues into this month and if you’re stuck for something to do on Father’s Day then the Bourne Classic Car & Bike Carnival is a fab event for petrol heads. Organisers are expecting approximately 300 vehicles on Sunday June 19. Cars and bikes aside expect to see buses, vintage fairground rides, live music and a variety of trade stalls for all the family. www.espmag.co.uk

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH
LISAPLEX SOLD BY BARKERS
Next time you’re having your hair done at your local hair salon, make sure you ask about LISAPLEX. I went down to see our friends at Barkers who said it’s the best way to get perfect looking hair when you bleach or colour it often like I do. It even repairs and rebuilds hair that’s been previously damaged. The soy proteins condition and moisturise hair from the effects of chemical treatments. And best of all it requires no maintenance – your hairdresser applies it and then you don’t have to do anything yourself between appointments. My hair feels lovely and rejuvenated, so thanks Barkers for this great tip!
SUMMER HAIR Continuing the hair theme, let’s check out what’s going to be the beautiful trends for hair this summer. If you’re happy to experiment, why not try some temporary soft pastel tones such as ocean blues, sea foam mint greens, peachy corals and dreamy pinks. Perfect for festival goers after a change for a long weekend. Top tip: try having lowlights on your root colours taken through to break up the colour through the mid length and ends. With festival season approaching braids are also back in fashion. The Kardashians have already showcased their braided styles for the season. Why not try incorporating jewellery into the braids to make it eye catching and unusual. Thanks to Amber Bird at Michael John for suggesting some top tips. Make sure you visit their salons from June to try their new Solar Range designed to help keep your hair healthy this summer.

BEING
(DON’T) GET WITH THE PROGRAMME… TRY YOUR OWN NATURAL DETOX AND GET SET FOR SUMMER!
W
ith the summer months having now arrived you may feel like your inner sunshine is being blocked by a sluggish system and a lack of vitality or that you need to shed a few pounds.
If you feel sluggish, tired, irritable, suffer brain fog, bloating etc you may actually be ‘food drunk’ which comes from the over consumption of refined grains (and for some even whole grains), sugar, caffeine and alcohol. All can stimulate the nervous system, affect our brain, causing a stimulatory high as you feel the buzz after eating them, only to find you’re dropped back to the undertone of feeling sluggish and tired once again. The cycle goes on, the more you eat them the more your body craves them to get your energy for the day. This is all a fake energy and one that serves only to age you quicker and wear out the body. So with that said, it’s no wonder as we approach summer that many of us start to look for a shortcut or a way out and tend to jump on the detox marketing wagon.
‘Our body can naturally detox with its organs of detoxification and elimination, however the amount of toxins coming into our body from foods and the environment may be overwhelming our system’
Before signing up to one of the ‘detox or cleanse’ type supplement and diet regimes start off by reducing/stopping the above foods, increase your water, increase raw salads, cooked veggies, ditch the sugar and reduce the caffeine – then see how you feel. So many people make these changes and feel an instant lift in energy, start to sleep better, find their skin looks better and dark circles improve. So many gimmicks and overselling of supplements to support detox are taken and people hail the ‘product’ as the success. More often it’s the ceasing of food stimulants, increasing fresh natural produce, getting out in

the sunshine, moving the body more and increasing hydration that really makes the difference. Our body can naturally detox with its organs of detoxification and elimination, however the amount of toxins coming into our body from foods and the environment may be overwhelming our system. Cleansing and detoxification are tools that I’ve used for many years, they’ve been around and used as therapeutic tools for centuries by early doctors and naturopaths and they didn’t use copious amounts of supplements that are sold today. So before you splash out on a ‘programme’ make some changes yourself which are simple and easy to do – it’s not rocket science! Whilst there are good therapeutic supplements to aid and support detoxification which can be beneficial it’s better to start by making simple changes then see what ‘extra’ support might be needed after, it should then be more personalised too. So start ditching the sugar, caffeine, refined grains, alcohol and processed foods and make the change over to – – Increased water – Increased fibre from veggies and some fruits – Swap grains to root veggies, and seed grains, millet, quinoa and buckwheat (all good sources of fibre and nutrients) – Increase raw vegetables (salads, smoothies) – Enjoy fresh lean meat/fish, some raw nuts/seeds etc – Reduce the salt swapping for herbs/spices and maybe a pinch of Himalayan or rock salt.
By doing this for 2 - 3 weeks you may then find that your vitality will increase and your overall wellbeing improve. You may start to sleep better too. Ensure you start to move your body more, get out in the sunshine, get out in nature as much as possible, get eight hours sleep, avoid eating too late at night, reduce the time on the internet and TV, take a sauna if you can get to one (or you may have one) to sweat, book in for a deep tissue massage – you’ll soon notice a difference. You can then take your own personal cleansing journey forward from that point to go deeper with cleansing/detoxification such as all raw foods, more juices, emotional clearing techniques, acupuncture for detox support and of course bowel cleansing and colonics (see my offer on colonics below). Feel that natural buzz! In health, Karen

Open Water Swimming In the last couple of years I’ve built up a modest collection of running and cycling achievements in various events and have been asked many times if I’d ever fancy a triathlon or even a notoriously tough Ironman. These involve running and cycling which I’m fine with but you also have to swim across open waters, in a crowd, in a race, over a pretty long distance, that’s a bit daunting…
I was met by a few of the team there including my coach for the session Nikki Fletcher. Nikki and Craig picked me out the right size suit and I headed off to the changing rooms to wriggle my way into it. It was a brand new suit from Aqua Sphere and once I’d fought my way into it I felt great and was good to go. Topped off with the hat and goggles I looked the part, now I just had to do the actual swimming bit… Nikki talked me through a few details including fairly important things like how to breathe and when to look where I was going. I was also told to enter the water in stages to acclimatise steadily, this was a good plan and in fact it wasn’t too bad! The water was a fairly cool 11.8 degrees but to my surprise whilst in the snug and buoyant suit I stayed very comfortable, it worked a bit like a thermos flask giving a nice warm overlay making me warm like a very svelte seal.
Photos: Emma Bothamley
If I ever swim in a pool I tend to just mosey along in the slow lane doing a half-hearted breast-stroke whilst trying to keep ahead of the older ladies effortlessly catching me up. I think a few lessons in ‘proper swimming’ have been on the cards for some time, so I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to have a crack at some real open water swimming over at Tallington Lakes.
40
www.espmag.co.uk
The coaching progressed with small steps, gliding into the water, swimming short lengths back and
forth and then building up to going out doing laps around the buoys and it turned out with Nikki’s support I did a pretty good job of it. Once at a more advanced level you can build up to doing 750m laps of the lake. There are many exit points all the way around and safety features to take a rest at if you need a breather so I’m looking forward to getting back for some of the evening sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays and working towards my first triathlon finally! Tallington Lakes actually have their very own triathlon on Sunday June 26 so maybe that’s worth aiming for? I’d definitely recommend heading over for either leisure or training, and even as a group activity there are plenty of other things to be doing if not everyone in your group fancied the swimming. Just across on the next lake there are things like kayaking, zorbing, sailing and windsurfing to keep busy with and nice hot drinks for everyone when they’re done too.

THE POSH PAGE ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United… The Premier League season may be over (and what a success for Leicester City by the way) and more importantly, locally, the Football League season has come to a close, but if you thought you’d have a summer break from the beautiful game, you’re very wrong, for the European Championships are already upon us! played Holland and I had to try and mark Wesley Snejder, which was a wonderful experience.

“Any player who has the chance to represent their country should jump at the chance and there will be a lot of players who will be having the time of their lives right now. I hope to get out to France myself and do a bit of media work and support the Welsh boys. “I think Wales have got a decent chance, they have a good manager, a settled squad and their qualifying campaign was superb. I think it is important that they keep Ashley Williams, Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale fit, that is a good spine to the team, and if they can do that who knows. They have a tricky game against Slovakia first and then it is the England game.
Michael Smith
I’m writing this column midway through May, so when you pick up this copy of ESP, I’ll probably be sunning myself in France (myself and a few others are heading to Northern France in a motorhome, like Max and Paddy just without the humour.) But while many across the region settle down in front of the television or venture out into the city centre to experience the atmosphere, one man at the ABAX could well be starring for his country. Posh full-back Michael Smith made a late run for inclusion in the Northern Ireland squad following a consistent campaign at the ABAX and fulfilled a lifetime ambition by running out at Windsor Park earlier in the year.
“To be in the European Championship squad would be a dream come true but just to be in and around the players is a wonderful experience and one that I will always treasure. If I am not there, I will certainly be backing the boys in France,” Smith continued. I always thought I’d play for England. Well up until the age of 11 when someone had the heart to tell me that actually I wouldn’t. But dreams can come true. Look at Jamie Vardy. A few years ago he was in the nonleague and suddenly he’s a Premier League winner and is one of the first names in an England squad.
“It was an amazing experience. When you get that call-up, you just can’t wait to tell your friends and family. Playing international football is what it is all about, it is the best of the best and I was very blessed that I got the opportunity to do that. “I remember my under 21 debut, I scored a really good solo goal and we had a really good squad. To make the breakthrough at 19-years-old and feature in a game at Iceland was incredible, but three days later, we

Collison represented his country, Wales, 15 times, scoring on two occasions and would’ve gone on to be a regular in red had it not been for injury. He remembers the moment he was given his chance on the international stage.
Jack Collison
“I think they can beat England. It should be a mouth-watering contest, particularly if both nations get the desired result in the opening fixture. I don’t think Wales fear anyone and it will be interesting to see how it goes,” Collison said. You will be able to follow the local progress at the Euros, should Michael Smith make it, on the club website www.theposh.com.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT, FROM THE JAM @ THE CRESSET
It’s festival season and next month I’m very much looking forward to the return of live music on Stamford Meadows. A brand new Stamford Music Festival is taking place this year with new organisation and a new vibe incorporating a real mix of music that should please everyone. Organised by the Market Square Group, it’s being held from Friday July 15 to Sunday July 17. The Friday night will have a jazz ‘n’ blues feel and will be rounded off by the Howard Rose Band. Howard found fame on BBC One’s The Voice and singer Howard was born in West Deeping. Saturday early afternoon will be a showcase for new artists and folk music, and later on the tempo will step up a notch with lively performances from local staples The Gangsters and One Eyed Cats. Sunday will feature a more classical style in the afternoon, with Stamford favourites Tin Pigeons rounding off the weekend. Other acts on the line up include Saturday headliners Little Mammoths, who feature a former member of rock band Noah and the Whale. They’ll be joined over the weekend by Bianca and the Top Cats, Frumenty, Pembroke Tenneson, guitarist Steve Bean, harpist Henrietta Smith, mezzo soprano Leilani Barratt, Michael Keithson and the Mark Hill Jazz Quartet. Visit www.stamfordmusicfestival.co.uk for more on the event.
SUMMER SUNDAYS ARE HERE!
You know it’s summer when the Sunday music sessions ramp up again at Charters and when it comes to great tunes, beer and a fantastic city centre beer garden by the river you just can’t beat it.
Yes, I’m pleased to see the fantastic free live Summer Sundays have just started up again for a 7th year. And this year is a pretty special one for the bar as Charters will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary in style this September! They’re warming up to that big party with Summer Sundays just underway with the June line up looking very appealing right through until the end of August. Check out all the dates in our Gig Guide each month but for this month it’s The Lazoons on Sunday June 5, Tiger Club on Sunday June 12, Grounded on Sunday June 19 and The Motor City Vipers Sunday June 26. If the good old British weather does do its worst, it all simply moves indoors.

Back in the early 80s, The Jam dominated the charts with anthems such as That’s Entertainment, Going Underground and A Town Called Malice. Nowadays, The Jam is reincarnated, in part, as From The Jam, Sarah Tempest featuring original member Bruce Foxton with new frontman, the charmingly cool Russell Hastings. ESP’s Sarah Tempest stood in for me and caught up with him ahead of their Peterborough show on Saturday June 18… Although currently enjoying a rare day off, Russell clearly loves to perform. “It feels like we’re on a permanent tour!” he laughs, “but it’s what we do and it’s going great. Most places are sold out and not just with die hard fans of The Jam, it’s a complete mixture. They’re all having a great time, and so are we! We’ve got a new single coming out and lots of favourable press – we seem to be Goldenballs at the moment!” But whilst he’s enjoying this success, no-one could accuse Russell of not earning his music stripes. “I was always into music from a very young age, and always played over the years but with little commercial success. But then in the early 2000s, I started playing with [original The Jam member] Rick Buckler and we just went out playing Jam songs to people. One night, we played a show at Guildford University and Bruce [Foxton] happened to be on the bill too. He jumped on stage, sang Down in the Tube Station at Midnight with us and the place went nuts, and it’s just gone from there!” Even before forming the band, Russell was a huge fan of The Jam but he’s keen to correct false rumours that he used to be a Paul Weller tribute act and says he’s not out to imitate – “I perform 100% as Russell every night.” So what can we expect from the show in Peterborough? “Loads of energy!” he promises enthusiastically, “great songs, nice and loud, in your face! Lots of fun! We’ll play the classics as well as some new songs. Paul [Weller] plays guitar and piano on a couple of the tracks on the album; he came in and we hung out. Yeah, that is pretty cool!” he concedes, laughing at my dropped jaw. “I’m also extremely privileged to be playing these songs that mean so much to people and privileged to play them with these musicians. Me and Bruce are the best of friends and we even go on holiday together, is that weird?” Erm, yes?! From The Jam are performing at The Cresset on June 18. Call the box office on 01733 265705.
