SING FOR LIFE 2017: 40 WOMEN WANTED! Following its phenomenal success last year, the charity project is back for 2017, looking for 40 local women to perform in a concert supporting Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice. Now in its fifth season, Sing for Life has introduced hundreds of local women to the joys of singing while raising thousands of pounds for charity, both for Cancer Research UK and for Thorpe Hall, with over five thousand pounds raised for the hospice last year alone. “The project is not about finding the next Adele; it’s about helping ordinary women find their voice,” said Will Prideaux, Sing for Life’s director. “So many people lack confidence or genuinely believe they can't sing, but deep down just about everyone secretly has a favourite karaoke number, and – we promise – our very experienced music team will have you singing in no time!” Sing for Life launches with introduction sessions on Wednesday July 12, (7-9pm), Friday July 14 (6-9pm) Saturday July 15 (10.30am12.30pm). Absolutely no previous singing experience is necessary, just a willingness to step out of your comfort zone, get stuck in and give it a go! For more details call 07714 017046 or email info@peterborough mvchoir.org.uk
SPONSOR SUE RYDER VOLUNTEERS A new initiative encouraging volunteers to double their contribution to charity has been launched by the team at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. There are around 320 volunteers regularly supporting the work of the hospice which provides incredible care to patients and their families from across the region. Each year their efforts are officially recognised during National Volunteers’ Week in June. This year families and friends are being asked to show their appreciation for the commitment and dedication volunteers display by sponsoring them – with all the money raised donated to Thorpe Hall Hospice. The hospice’s volunteer services development co-
ordinator Jacqui Hookham said: “We couldn’t do what we do without our incredible team of volunteers and this is another way to demonstrate to them how much they are worth. “Between June 1 and 7 our team of volunteers will give hundreds of hours of their time. We are asking them to seek sponsorship from their family and friends for that time – just like they would if they were running a marathon or skydiving. It means they will be doubling the impact they have on our work.” To find out more about volunteering at Thorpe Hall Hospice please call 01733 225900 or email thorpehall@sueryder.org.

The city’s fantastic Heritage Festival returns this month bringing plenty of live action to the city centre celebrating 3,500 years of history! Don’t miss this great weekend of free events and attractions on Saturday June 17 and Sunday June 18 as the Festival returns for its ninth successful year. Presented by Vivacity in association with Perkins Engines Company Limited, Peterborough Cathedral and Peterborough City Council this is the city centre’s most popular event, attracting over 37,500 people last year. The highlight for this year will commemorate the 375th anniversary of the start of the English Civil War, seeing Parliamentarians and Royalists battle in a full blown re-enactment. Don’t miss all the action as Roundheads and Cavaliers battle for control of Peterborough in a spectacular display of fighting skill with period weaponry, armour and siege tactics. Over the Festival weekend there’ll be living history encampments, stalls and entertainment in and around the cathedral grounds. The Heritage Festival also features a large programme of fringe events running from June 10 to 24 where you can get involved with the multitude of heritage societies and attractions across the city. Visit www.vivacitypeterborough.com/heritagefest to find out more.
Battle Proms The annual epic concert is back at Burghley House in Stamford on Saturday July 8. Pack up your picnics and enjoy the summer celebrations at the stunning grounds of this historic house. The sublime music paired with the dramatic displays has made this a key event in the calendar. Concert-goers will be treated with the full 2 hour orchestral concert from the 60 piece New English Concert Orchestra (led by Douglas Coombes MBE.) There’ll be cavalry displays, aerial displays from a WWII Spitfire, firing canons and to top everything off nicely a spectacular firework display. This is most definitely an event that you won’t want to miss out on, just ask more than 7,000 people who went last year. To find out more go to www.battleproms.com. Ellie Pybus

The year-long appeal to raise money for a statue in honour of the great Chris Turner is on course to raise the necessary funds to make it happen. Knowing Chris, the last thing he would’ve wanted is a massive statue of him erected at London Road. But if you’d told him it’s what the fans wanted and have paid for, he’d have been very touched and maybe even have taken a selfie in front of it! I can’t wait to see it unveiled. For the past year, an exclusive club named CT5 has seen up to 140 people donate £10 per month and this has been the backbone of the fundraising. There have also been numerous events that have taken place in that time and these are continuing. Posh allowed CT5 to hold two bucket collections inside and outside the ground before and after matches and a massive £5,500 was collected. Supporters’ group PISA 2000 held two race nights at their Ebeneezers HQ in Grove Street, which raised £3,000. All three supporters’ clubs (PISA 2000, The POSH Supporters’ Trust and Forever Posh) have worked together on this project and between them raised approximately £12,000. Impressive when you consider all three groups having different agendas, but their love of the club and of a club legend is clear to see. Locally based FreeKicks Foundation have also supported the fund by raising £1,500 at their golf day. Even the city council have done their bit by donating roundabout sponsorship to the value of more than £2,000, which has helped advertise the fund to the general public. Watch this space for details of the September unveiling day. Until then, more information can be found on www.thechristurnerstatue.co.uk.

Last month we reported on the opening of Becket's Tea Room and I’ve since moved into the building. Yes, I’ve a soft spot for tea rooms and yes, I’ve had the waistband on my trousers taken out by an inch. Housed within the cathedral grounds, this gem of a place serves up freshly prepared food from locally sourced ingredients. There are plenty of healthy options for lunches but it’s the mouth-watering homemade cakes I can’t get enough of. I’ve been through carrot cake, Victoria sponge, marmalade coated flapjacks, coffee cake and carrot cake (I’ve had it twice). But what I like most about Becket’s is it’s all come about following a collaboration between the catering arm of Peterborough Regional College and our Cathedral, which sees all profits generated by the tea room split between both parties. Oh, and did I mention East of England’s best ‘window with a view’? It’s
Gables Reunion Continues
Esp Crew Back on Air! Peterborough Community Radio (PCRFM) has been live for a couple of months and undoubtedly the early ratings success has to be down to members of the ESP family who are playing starring roles on air. Yours truly has joined our Keith Dalton and his other radio half Claire Tod on Saturday mornings. Keith and Claire are live every week and I gate crash them once a month (next date is June 17) with all the very latest Man About Town news. I’ve been working with this pair on and off for the last 20 years and for my money there’s no better male / female radio pairing locally. When Mikey Clarke joined ESP he came with a shed load of radio experience and it’s great to see he’s secured his own show on the station. Mikey’s Saturday slot (1-4pm) is pretty laid back and anything goes. He told me: “My good mate Roe joins me in the studio and the show is the random ramblings of two friends – as if we’re chatting away at the pub. “We discuss the week gone by, things to do locally and quite often wind each other up – as mates often do. With so many stations doing networked shows from outside of Peterborough, it's great to have something that is 100% local. There's so much variety on PCRFM and there’s a real buzz in and around the station. I'm really pleased to be a part of it.” So, if you have any special requests, want information about anything going on in our city or just want to tell us how much you like reading our scribes then email us at ESP and we’ll be in touch. In the meantime, tune into 103.2FM.
Celebrate 125 Years of Football
The Peterborough Football Association will be marking its 125th anniversary with a massive fun day at Bushfield Leisure Centre on Saturday July 15. The event will feature 37 activities and caters for all ages with coaching lessons, a penalty shootout competition, a speed cage, skills tests, goalkeeper coaching, trophy exhibition, specialised lectures including being a physiotherapist, how to raise funds for your club and coaching sessions for coaches and referees. Organiser Robert Windle and I go way back. As a referee, he used to watch me smash 30 yard strikes and chips into the back of seven-a-side nets for years. He told me: “This is going to be the largest football activity event ever in Peterborough and to celebrate 125 years of football we want everybody to get involved. We especially welcome those who don’t already play football and want to give it a go. Who knows we could unearth the next Cristiano Ronaldo (or Pep ‘Bandana’ Cipriano).” In addition to the activities there’ll be tournaments and festivals for under 7s up to adult seven-a-side catering for boys and girls. There’ll also be indoor futsal matches, disabilities football and walking football. There is even A Question of Sport for Primary schools! Entry fees for teams is only £12.50 if you enter four or more. To register, visit www.vivacity-peterborough.com and for more information, including sponsorship opportunities, call Robert on: 07970 228790.
‘The Funk Express’ is the name organiser Graham Fairbairn has given to the next Gables reunion night at The SolGarden in The Solstice. Stick Friday June 30 in your diary and I promise you won’t be disappointed. There’ll be a mix of classic funk, soul, rare groove, new jack swing, hip hop and house from the 70s to the early 90s. In The Solstice bar the vibe will be post-Gables R&B, acid jazz, garage to nusoul and soulful house. The Eden Room
will be a mash-up of beatz, dub, reggae and all things nice. On the decks will be Eddie Nash, Mark Goodliff, Otis Roberts, John Covell, Asif Shaheed and Owen Wonder and DJ Narnas plus guest DJs. These events have gathered massive momentum and more importantly each one of them is staged to raise money for charity. This time money raised will go to Cancer Research UK. It’s only a fiver on the door.
Caribbean Way at New Bay The Queensgate extension and refurbishment is ticking along nicely and one of the early additions I’m looking forward to making the most of is the Turtle Bay restaurant and bar, which opens late June (see more on our food pages). We haven’t really seen a restaurant with this vibe in Peterborough. The investment has cost around £800,000, which has transformed part of the old H&M store, enabling Turtle Bay to open out onto St John’s Square and providing space for 180 diners in total. The restaurant celebrates the lively, colourful, soulful and delicious experiences the Caribbean has to offer. Signature dishes include their famous jerk chicken and curried goat. And if you love rum like I do then the bar will be a real draw with more than 40 Caribbean rums to choose from. Décor-wise it’s all about quirkiness with use of recycled materials (check out the oil drum lampshades) and reclaimed wood for tables and seating. The way this restaurant looks will make you want to visit just out of curiosity alone. What a great addition to the city centre.
Thanks for Bridging the Gap As bridges go, the footbridge over Bourges Boulevard that connects the railway station and Queensgate is probably the most uninspiring piece of architecture I’ve ever seen. But that doesn’t matter. What does matter (for me anyway) is that bridge has been there for the most part of my life and it’s one of the landmarks I associate my city with. That’s why I’m pleased the city council have decided not to remove it but extensively refurbish it instead. We’ll see new decking on the stepped ramps and across the main span of the bridge. The whole structure will also be repainted and new aluminium window frames will be installed and fitted with coloured glass. CAUGHT IN THE ACT! Congrats to John The roof will be replaced Fox, our city’s new Mayor. Guess you’ll be giving up and the ceiling will house your seasonal job then John? new LED lighting. CCTV will also be installed. Nice work. www.espmag.co.uk

Jeff’s Sports Connections Sports Connections Foundation (or SCF – who are based here in Peterborough) formed in 2009 when two ex-professional footballers decided to use their sporting skills and connections to help and inspire children. Years on, their original programme – Prokick – has engaged with over 400,000 children across the country.
E
SP Magazine has joined forces with the charity to support them (alongside numerous celebrities) to help connect them with more local schools. One of the celebs offering their time for the cause is Jeff Brazier, who is perhaps best known for his many roles on This Morning, as a hub presenter and segment host. Jeff is the first of many celebs we’ll be speaking to in regards to SCF – look out for more interviews appearing in the mag throughout the upcoming months and on our website. During my chat (and pint) with the Dancing on Ice star, I was keen to find out more about the Prokick Schools Challenge. He told me, “It’s a really exciting programme. Kids are loving it! Me and other ex-footballers have been visiting primary schools with giant inflatable goalposts with a simple but important message, sport does help and inspire children. “We’ll give a talk during assembly in the morning to talk about the day and explain where SCF will be spending the money that 16 www.espmag.co.uk
the kids will have raised through sponsorship prior to the event – which gets split between the school and our children’s charity. “Later, everyone is encouraged to kick a ball as fast as they can into the goal and the speed is recorded on a digital display. It’s great seeing how competitive the kids and the adults get. Some people don’t even realise they had the competitive spirit inside of them till they take part in this.” The fun and interactive challenge is fully inclusive, regardless of a child’s age or ability. The enthusiastic Ambassador (in
School Challenge also teaches children about healthy lifestyles and global citizenship. Children receive certificates, medals and unique Sports Connections footballs after the event. Continuing to discuss his passion on the subject, Jeff explained, “I have kids myself and it’s great to see them and others getting fully behind sport. Our health is important to us all – and sport obviously improves that – but this also helps youngsters tackle social skills and bullying, etc.”
“Our health is important to us all – and sport obviously improves that – but this also helps youngsters tackle social skills and bullying...” this case, Jeff Brazier) acts as a positive role model, helping to build self-esteem, confidence and resilience. The Prokick
Money raised from Prokick helps to fund the charity's many other activities – granting Sporting Wishes for children with
life threatening illnesses; running Inspire Through Sport camps for disadvantaged or vulnerable children, and contributing towards the cost of running an orphanage and a children's nursery in Burkina Faso in West Africa under their Inspire Through Sport International banner. Continuing on the subject of Jeff’s sons, he had made the decision to keep Bobby and Freddie out of the limelight after their mother (Jade Goody) lost her battle with cervical cancer in 2009. I asked to hear his thought process behind the decision. “Things got really crazy, really quick,” Jeff told me. “After Jade passed away, there was paparazzi everywhere and I knew I had to do something about it, so I took the matter to the courts and it became official – we weren’t allowed to be followed anymore. I believe it’s only happened twice since. I wanted my boys to have the most normal childhood possible, and it was far from that at the time. They’re free to say and do what they like with the press when they’re older but until then, I have to do what I feel is best for them.” A few months ago, Jeff ran
a phone in about grief on This Morning – offering advice clearly drawn from his own experience. He was praised by fans of the show afterwards on numerous social networking sites, but Jeff was worried that wouldn’t be the case. “When it’s live TV, anything can happen,” he explained. “You don’t know what people are going to say on the phone and I didn’t have long to think about my response, so there’s a lot of pressure. I just spoke to the callers openly and honestly and I hope it helped a little.” The celeb strikes me as a lad’s lad – someone who enjoys a few pints with the boys. I asked what it was like going out to clubs since being a public figure. “It’s fine. I don’t feel I’m at a level of fame where people want to approach me all the time.” Jeff joked, “If I were in a bingo hall however, I might be in trouble!” During our chat, we also discussed in great detail Jeff’s new book The Grief Survival Guide, out June 1. You can read what he had to say about that on our website www.espmag.co.uk. To find out more about Sports Connections Foundation and the Prokick Schools Challenge visit www.scfoundation.org.uk. Hundreds of schools have already taken part such as Kirkstone House and several others in and around Peterborough. Perhaps yours could be next? Mikey Clarke

Food Glori us Food Get Ready for a Taste of the Caribbean Peterborough’s much anticipated sizzling new Caribbean restaurant and bar Turtle Bay opens on Sunday June 25!
We’ll be popping down on opening night to check out their trademark jerk spices, sunshineinspired cocktails and tropical spirit. It’s their first in Cambridgeshire and we’re so pleased they’ve chosen the city for their new beach-shackinspired 180 seat restaurant in Queensgate Shopping Centre. There’s been an £800k investment in the transformation of the unit which was previously part of H&M in the centre and overlooks St. John’s Square. As well as the stunning ‘island hut’ bar, there’ll be outside dining and a vibrant, open ‘street kitchen’.
A spokesman told ESP – “Food is at the heart of the Turtle Bay experience – just as it’s central to the heart and soul of Caribbean culture. An eclectic cuisine that is influenced by a rich tapestry of ethnicities, the food at Turtle Bay offers a vast choice of bold flavours and rustic dishes, all inspired by the laid back, social outlook of the Caribbean.” Their signature dishes include their famous jerk chicken and curry
goat, but there is plenty for all palettes to choose from including a new burger menu, salad selection and a great collection of dishes for vegetarians, vegans and gluten free diners. The menu includes ‘Cutters’ (inspired by Beach Shacks and Street Hawkers of the Caribbean Islands – perfect for sharing over cocktails); the Jerk BBQ Pit dishes including Mo’ Bay Chicken, Jerk Sirloin Steak and Jerk Lamb Rump that are exactly as fiery as they sound; ‘One Pots’ (rich, slowly simmered and uniquely Caribbean) and Lunch and Light. We can’t wait to try their soul food and enjoy a taste of summer. We’re also looking forward to their happy hour which lasts from 11.30am – 7pm and then starts up again at 10pm! This makes it the happiest happy hour in town with ALL of their cocktails available at 2-4-1 during that time – it’s a must for cocktail lovers and rum enthusiasts with a range of more than 40 Caribbean rums to choose from! For a flavour of the menu read more on www.espmag.co.uk.

Riverford Picnic Walks It’s great to see the return of the picnic walking tours by Riverford at Sacrewell. Peterborough’s organic farm has just opened its gates once again for another series of summer walks between 5pm and 7pm from now until September. You can join them on Tuesday June 27, Wednesday July 19, Wednesday August 23 and Wednesday September 20. The walks will be followed by a picnic style meal of pies and salads, freshly made by a Riverford chef. Tickets are priced at £6 per person. David Simpson, who helps to run the farm at Sacrewell, says the walks are a chance to experience the farm at its best: “Each week we
18 www.espmag.co.uk
deliver boxes of veg and other organic produce across the region so we thought it would be a great idea to throw our gates open so people can see what we do for themselves. During summer, the farm is alive with activity and it’s the one time of the year when we plant, pick and sow crops all at once – it’s quite a sight. Because our produce is organic, guests will be able to taste our crops straight off the stalk.” You’ll also have a chance to see the diversity of wildlife on display at the farm which is home to a number of rare and endangered species of butterflies and birds. If you’d like to find out more call 01803 227426, email help@riverford.co.uk or visit www.riverford.co.uk.
Pizza and Outdoor Cinema in Stamford
We love this new idea launched recently at The Bull & Swan in Stamford. Their Pizza Potting Shed and Garden Cinema is already proving popular and there’s plenty more dining and movie treats to come, so fingers crossed on the weather! Having extended their outdoor space at the beginning of the year they’ve introduced a fabulous walled Kitchen Garden providing seasonal produce for their menu. The terrace area’s been kitted out with new seating and deck chairs for a little alfresco dining in the coming months and they’ve introduced a new outdoor cinema – offering a film every Thursday night (weather dependent) from 7.30pm with blankets for the cooler evenings. Movies lined up for June include The Hangover, Ocean’s 11 and Monty Python and the Holy Grail and film nights run through until the end of September. You can check the full film list here: www.hillbrookehotels.co.uk/media/2112/bull-swan-film-listapril-2017.pdf This will include coverage of Wimbledon in July with hopefully strawberries from the Kitchen Garden. Another brand new offering is the Pizza Potting Shed – this is open every Thursday and Friday from 6 – 9pm and every Saturday from 12noon – 9pm (weather dependent) offering a choice of seasonally topped pizzas, Peroni, Prosecco, Pinot and popcorn on a Thursday! The cinema’s free and no booking is required. Pizzas are one for £12 or £20 for two, find out more on www.thebullandswan.co.uk or call 01780 766412.

Classical Reflection make the Charts! Classical Reflection, Peterborough’s very own soprano twins were celebrating last month when their 2nd album, Echo went straight to number 3 in the Official Classical Charts. As well as number 3 in the charts Naomi and Hannah were also delighted to hear they entered Classic FM’s Top 30 Album Chart at number 5 and were featured on the Classic FM Chart Show with John Brunning. The girls told us they couldn’t believe it – “We were so excited we just jumped up and down, I think we may have actually screamed. It was such a surprise that we weren’t expecting. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who bought a copy and supported us.” Echo was recorded at Peterborough Cathedral over two nights with Ely Sinfonia and West End Director, Adrian Sutcliffe. Naomi and Hannah teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Society for the album donating £1 from each album sold to the charity as research has shown that music helps people with Alzheimer’s and related
conditions retrieve distant and forgotten memories and reconnect them to the world even in the latest stages of the condition. With the album recorded at the Cathedral it seemed the perfect choice for their album launch concert which was held on May 13 with a plethora of guests including world renowned violinist, Steve Bingham, classical guitarist, Chris Sommerfield, Huntingdon Male Voice Choir, Big Voices Children’s choir and ballet dances from Saldance Theatre Arts. ESP went along to see the girls in action, so did they enjoy it as much as we did? “We had a fabulous time. The Cathedral looked amazing, our lighting chaps at M and N Entertainments did a great job, we loved the smoke effect and the different colours as they changed with each song. All our support guests were also great. “We think the ballet dancers surprised everyone when they danced down the aisle. The best bit though is meeting everyone
afterwards. We love chatting to our guests, signing their albums and having photos taken with them.” Things have just gone from strength to strength for these talented twins and ESP has been right behind them. Since appearing on The Voice they’ve not looked back, so what’s next? “Well, we are planning on releasing a single in the very near future, possibly an acapella cover version of a song which will have some harmony layers. It will be a good contrast to the orchestral tracks on the album. We will let you know very soon. “We also have a lot of exciting events around the country this year including singing with Aled Jones in November, we’re really looking forward to meeting him and having a chat.” If you’d like to purchase this amazing album in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society you can visit their website www.classicalreflection.co.uk or visit Peterborough Visitor Centre, Bridge St or call 01733 452336. Echo is also available to download on Amazon or iTunes and we certainly recommend it.
Louis Rips It Up Local lad Louis Smith MBE is putting on his dancing shoes once again to make the city proud. This time around the former Strictly Come Dancing champion is taking to the stage in a slightly different way – a 50s-themed theatre show by the name of Rip It Up. Starring alongside fellow Strictly stars, Natalie Lowe (exStrictly Come Dancing ballroom dancing pro) and Jay McGuinness (vocalist from The Wanted and Strictly Come Dancing champion 2015), and brought to you from the producers and director of 2017’s smash tour Remembering Fred; this night of the finest choreography aligned with the best songs from the greatest decade of music will have you bopping about in no time. Louis said, “A lot of people think of the music of the ‘50’s as just rock ‘n’ roll. Whilst this was the decade that brought us Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Little Richard and more, we will also be celebrating the music of Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and all the beautiful vocal harmony groups from that special decade.” Louis Smith MBE found fame as a sporting superstar on the pommel horse at the 2008 Beijing Olympic games, where he won bronze. The extremely talented gymnast then went on to 20 www.espmag.co.uk
win silver medals at both the London 2012 and the Rio De Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. Although it may seemingly look like Smith’s sights have switched completely to dancing, don’t you worry! Louis will be returning to training shortly to try his hand winning a medal at his 4th Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, and is eager to make his mother – and us – proud once again. Speaking of his inspiration to do what he does, Louis wants to make his mother proud. “The older I’ve got, the more it sinks in how much she had to do for me. It’s just incredible, it inspires me every day.” Rip It Up promises to bring the fabulous soundtrack of the 1950’s to life in an explosion of song and dance that will see Natalie, Jay and Louis swing, bop, jitterbug, jive and ballroom their way “through some of the most fantastic songs ever created,” says Natalie Lowe. We’ll see the band, singers and dancers perform the biggest hits as they dance their way through the ‘50’s on a massive forty-two date nationwide tour starting in September. You can catch Louis close to home when the dance show comes to the Cambridge Corn Exchange on Wednesday September 20, or if you can’t make that, on Friday October 20 at the King’s Lynn Corn Exchange. So if you’re in the mood for a good bop and to support Louis in his latest dancing endeavour, ticket prices start at
£37.50 (plus booking fees) and can be found on the venues’ websites or via www.seetickets.com/tour/rip-it-up. Tiffany Wright

We caught up with fashion guru and blogger Megan Gilbride when she appeared at Queensgate Shopping Centre’s Martinis, Music and Muses evening and she’s a big fan of the trend – “Do not be reserved! Go for it. The bigger and bolder the colour the better. Don’t be afraid if colours clash, that’s part of the fun. In my wardrobe, you’ll find some brightly coloured tailored suits and amazing coloured shoes.” Read more from Megan and see more from our shoot on our website www.espmag.co.uk.

paparazzi Caught in the act? Cocktails and fundraisers…
ESP photographer Mike Harris popped down to a couple of fundraisers for our Paparazzi. The crowds were having a great time at a fundraising night at the Wheatsheaf pub on Eastfield Road with some painful looking chest waxing all in aid of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice! A glamorous masked ball at the Rugby Club in Fengate, organised by the local volunteer fundraising group for the Alzheimer’s Society was a huge success attended by the Deputy Mayor & Deputy Mayoress and over 100 guests. Money’s still coming in but it looks set to have raised around £4,000. In Queensgate, ESP’s Emma Bothamley captured the action at the shopping centre’s Martinis, Music and Muses event which saw shoppers enjoy cocktails, discounts, style advice and tunes from celeb DJ Lauren Pope! says Lea, who estimates that she learnt over 800 songs during her time on Glee. “My schedule was so busy I really wasn’t involved in the production process. With Places I knew I wanted to be more hands-on from start to finish.” As well as production, Lea was also very involved in the songwriting and gathering process for Places. “We went about it basically three way,” she says, “Me and Ali (Tamposi – writer for Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce) wrote songs together; or I sat down with a bunch of writers and shared my stories that inspired songs. I believe the stories the songs tell represent who I am as a singer and also where I’m at in my life.” She was also elated to receive a song from Ellie Goulding, sayng “I’m a huge fan of hers so it was a thrill to be able to record it.”
The driven diva of Glee is taking centre stage with her own album. ESP’s Sarah Tempest shines the spotlight on Lea Michele… It’s hard to believe that it’s nearly 10 years since Glee first shimmied Sarah Tempest onto our screens in a haze of jazz hands and legwarmers, and made a star of Bronx born actress Lea Michele. Playing the character of spoiled diva Rachel Berry, an iconic role that producers have said was written especially for her, until the show’s final curtain in 2015, Lea has enjoyed success in her own right with her first album, Louder, debuting at #4 on Billboard’s Top Album chart in 2012. And now she’s back, with a brand new album, Places, which sees a welcome return to her theatrical roots.
28 www.espmag.co.uk
Lea Michele made her Broadway debut aged 8 playing the young Cosette in Les Miserables, a role that she won despite, legend has it, only auditioning to keep her friend company. Since then, she’s gained notoriety and critical acclaim playing Wendla Bergmann in the 2006 hit Broadway musical Spring Awakening before joining Glee in 2009. It was during Spring Awakening that she bonded with her co-star Jonathan Groff (Best known for being the voice of Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen movie) who Lea says is “still her best friend” and “the perfect sounding board for the songs on Places.” Although her first album, Louder, wasn’t quite post Glee, it still came at a crossroads in Lea’s career when she was
starting to ponder exactly where she was heading musically. “During Louder, I was still recording about 10 songs a week for Glee and then going in on the weekends to work on my album,”
“I believe the stories the songs tell represent who I am as a singer...”
The unusual title ‘Places’ was purposefully chosen as a nod to her theatrical calling. Giving a clear indication that this album was to be less pop influenced than her debut album. As Lea explains, “When I hear them say ‘places’ everyone, I know it’s show time. It took me 3 years to make this record and I was determined to have it be true to who I was as a singer. “I grew up listening to Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion, starting out on the stage where a vocalist’s charge is to be dramatic and timeless. I just knew it was time for me to embrace what I love and not try to be anyone other than myself. Broadway is in my blood and it’s what is always calling me back to the kind of music where the vocal performance is really the priority. It’s also a throwback to the women who inspired me and where I come from. And that’s what the title also means to me – it is time for me to get back to my place on the stage where I’m most comfortable, and put together a concert tour that showcases these great songs.” With Lea’s undoubted talent, her drive and her passion, Places is set to be a huge hit for the girl who always dreamed of success. After all, as her debut single says ‘Anything’s possible’. The new album Places is available now along with her single, Anything’s Possible. www.leamichele.com

This Tom Cruise-headlining blockbuster is intended to be the first instalment in the Universal Studios Monsters shared universe – with reportedly the likes of Frankenstein, Invisible Man, Van Helsing and Wolf Man to follow – as Sofia Boutella’s (Kingsman: The Secret Service) female mummy gets the party started. When Cruise’s Nick Morton inadvertently awakens Boutella’s ancient Egyptian princess Ahmanet from her crypt beneath the desert, it opens up a Pandora’s Box of malevolence and terrors that will defy human comprehension. Russell Crowe co-stars in this action-adventure horror from esteemed big-budget producer Alex Kurtzman, directing his first major film.

There’s much to enjoy with this third instalment of the heavily sniper-influenced action series – as long as you can get past some of the game’s major flaws. Like with a lot of major gaming titles at the moment, developers are under immense pressure to hit release dates – and that can sadly be seen here with last-gen graphics, buggy gameplay, and most importantly, ridiculously long-winded load times. But this modern military shooter – as you play an American sniper dropped into Georgia near the Russian border – still serves up a compelling enough storyline, with three pillars of gameplay, Sniper, Ghost and Warrior, and excellent drone use which really adds another dimension to this open world game. Sadly though, many aspects are trying so hard to be like Far Cry – and it can’t really hold a candle to games of that ilk – but if you like sniping from distance you’ll get enjoyment here, as long as you have the patience for the game to load first.

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…
Footy and fatherhood… Posh manager Grant McCann gets ready to celebrate Father’s Day. June is possibly the quietest month of the year when it comes to football clubs. Aside from transfer business, it’s very rare to see many players knocking about at the Mick George Training Academy, while the management team are off around the country meeting prospective signings and enjoying a well-earned break. There is one date on the calendar in June though that nobody should forget and that is Fathers Day on Sunday June 18. Now, my Dad is not one for a big hurrah, a card and some socks will do him fine, but others across the city will be demanding fine whiskey and expensive jumpers. Others just want success for their son. In between doing transfer deals and finalising his management team, I had a quick word with the Peterborough United manager Grant McCann about all things parenthood and he was quick to sing the praises of his father Samuel. “My Dad was and still is a huge influence on me, from when I was a kid to my management career now. He was the main
32 www.espmag.co.uk
reason of how I got into football, he was constantly taking me to the park when I was a kid, he played in the street with me and helped me get into a local team. I think it certainly helped that he loved football, he went to Wolves as a kid for trials but then he found my mum and alcohol and life took over!
“My Dad was and still is a huge influence on me... ” “He is a massive influence and was on my football too. He was one of those parents that would say nothing on the touchline. He would never praise you either, when we got into the car and I knew I had played well, he would always say I ‘did okay’ and when I was below par, he would always tell me that ‘I could have done better’.
“He always spoke to me in the car and not on the touchline. He was a big influence on my brother too who went to Rangers. He still comes over now and was always there during the promotions as a player and whenever he comes over now, we seem to win, so I might try and move him over ahead of the new season!” Of course, Grant himself is a parent now and his three young boys are already getting to the stage of being football mad. He’s tried to use what his father taught him in his own advice, particularly when it comes to football. “My oldest boy plays in the Academy at Peterborough and my middle boy is starting to get into football as well. I have tried to use the advice my father gave me with them. I never shout anything from the sidelines and it is helping him, he is definitely improving. You have to get your kid into a club where you can trust the coaches and make him a better player that way.” On behalf of ESP magazine, I would like to wish all the dads out there a very Happy Father’s Day!

Bikers are Your World The Bourne Supremacy
City Centre Motorcycle Event Motorcycle enthusiasts are in for a treat as a convoy of more than 400 bikers will roll into Cathedral Square at midday on Saturday June 10. Riders from Leicester will be joined by motorcycle dealerships showcasing their stock including the Harley Davidson Sycamore franchise, Freedom Motorcycles from March, the Wansford Ducati dealership and City of Leather. The police’s Motorcycle Road Safety Unit and the blood transportation service SERV will also be on hand with tips and advice on staying safe biking. For the third year running the ride is in the name of charity with the bikers raising money for Alzheimer's Research UK – which promotes awareness and research into Alzheimer's and other dementias – and Women V Cancer. Women V Cancer fundraises for Breast Cancer Care, Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. Other groups set to join the ride include HOGS (Harley Davidson Owners), Nene Valley Ducati Riders and the Iron Horse Club from Market Deeping. For anyone interested in motorcycles this charity ride promises to be an impressive spectacle. People can contribute by buying charity wristbands, through collection buckets and donating at organiser Jas Sodhi's justgiving.com page on Facebook – Motorcycle Charity Ride Leicester to Peterborough. Jas told me: “This is a great day out for a great cause, one of which is very close to my heart having a father with dementia. We hope as many bikers will join us as possible and we always look forward to the welcome we get from Peterborough when we arrive in the city.” 34 www.espmag.co.uk
I’m always pleased to see new road safety campaigns aimed at motorcyclists and the latest police focus is asking riders: Whose world are you? It’s a message to us bikers that to the world we’re just one person, but to one person we’re the world. We’re encouraged to share pictures of us with that person on social media with the hashtag #WhoseWorldAreYou. The campaign also aims to make riders more meaningful to other motorists so they’re more likely to see them on the road by showing them the person behind the helmet; demonstrating that bikers are a range of people, with names, personalities and families, just like car drivers. Motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users and last year four motorcyclists were killed and 47 seriously injured on Cambridgeshire roads. The more you ride the more your skills improve but there’s a big responsibility for other motorists to take on too. Hopefully this campaign will help all road users including motorcyclists to stay alert and share our roads safely.
Another Fab MCN! Too many homemade cakes from tea rooms has meant that my motorcycle leather trousers simply don’t fit anymore. I could try going on a diet but that’s too much hard work especially when I could wait until the annual MCN Festival of Motorcycling event and grab a bargain That’s exactly what I did. I managed to get a top brand pair of leathers for exactly half the price I’d seen them online the day before! And I wasn’t finished – I bagged a motorbike cover for just a fiver too. Bargains aside there was of course hundreds of bikes on show from sports and tourers to classics and trikes. As per usual I entered every prize draw I came across to win a brand-new bike and I also pretended to be interested in getting a better insurance deal just so I could speak to the dozens of grid girls doing their PR thing in skin tight jumpsuits. This year’s event is the third MCN have staged at Peterborough Arena and it just keeps on getting better. The dirt track racing and stunt riding was particularly good and so was the opportunity to ride even more demo bikes than in previous years. The traders and exhibitors keep returning along with new ones every year – and so do motorcycle owners and enthusiasts in their droves. I’ll be back again in 2018, maybe for a larger pair of leathers…
I love this time of year when there seems to be a classic car and bike show almost every weekend – and I try and get to them all! One I never miss is the Bourne Car and Bike Show and Festival on Father’s Day (Sunday June 18). It was established about a decade ago by Bourne Motor Racing Club and each year more than 300 vehicles go on display. There’s always an eclectic mix of cars turning out and the motorcycles that rock up are all gorgeous. And speaking of gorgeous, the highlight of the year for the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club is the Annual Rally and Concours, which this time is being held at Burghley House in Stamford on Saturday June 24 and Sunday 25. It’ll be the largest Rolls-Royce and Bentley gathering anywhere in the world and makes for a spectacular sight. The whole event spans a weekend, with trade and other stands, an auction of cars and automobilia, as well as class judging and a parade of prize winning cars. For more information visit www.burghley.co.uk/events/rollsroyce.

Here at ESP, we like to think we have our finger on the pulse. So here’s a quick update on what’s new this month that we’ve reviewed just for you:
Joan Collins New Makeup Range
! It’s not only bright and bold colour trends in your fashion wardrobe this summer – make sure you don’t forget about your nails too. Go all out and have a colour that totally clashes with your summer outfit to be bang on trend. I recommend Leighton Denny Nail polish. They have some great bright colours in different tones (the yellow is great for summer) and it lasts well so is worth the investment in a few different shades.
Joan has dipped a toe in the world of beauty, and her Timeless beauty collection is as classy as she is. I particularly recommend the Compact Duo – a powder and lipstick set which is a great addition for any makeup case. You can pick it up at M&S too!
##### Pomegranate & Co This new range has been released by Samantha Lhoas who noticed the effects long working hours had on her skin. Her range of health and beauty products promotes anti-aging and is the only mid-market product with pomegranate extracts. www.pomegranateandco.com

! ! I saw loads of ESP readers down at Queensgate for their Music, Martini and Muses event back in April. What a great evening with lots of beauty and fashion tips and the chance to have a dance to DJ Lauren Pope from TOWIE. I caught up with Lauren in the VIP room and got a few sneaky pieces of health and beauty advice for us all. So what’s Lauren’s most important item in her makeup bag? “My strobing kit. Strobing is the new contouring and it’s amazing. I use Becca Cosmetics to get the look. Lauren has fabulous hair so I wondered what her seceret was. “I swear by hair extensions, she revealed. “It means my hair always looks fabulous and is worth investing in.

Well

Being Eating more greens really has been on trend in the past few years with the more health conscious among us and rightly so. Enjoying more greens raw, in juices and slightly steamed convey so many health benefits to the human body.
H
owever the most common greens tend to be limited to two, (especially for those who enjoy smoothies) which are spinach and kale and not much else. Both of these lush green foods offer great nutrients but unless we have a green diet which is ‘diverse’ we’re not getting the array of nutrients and green goodness that nature has intended for. Whilst they’re both nutritious there has also been some negative press about spinach over the years due to the oxalate levels in it (kale has lower levels so is off the hook so to speak).
as some people do. There are other high oxalate containing foods that we don’t think about such as nuts, chocolate, rhubarb, berries, soya products, black tea, potatoes, beans, swiss chard, beetroot (and their greens,) and many more. Oxalates will be found in various levels in plant food that’s why it’s important to enjoy a wide variety not only for the various level of these chemicals but also for their great different nutrients (N.B. There are certain health conditions where a low oxalate diet is required such as kidney stones that are made from calcium oxalate, or primary hyperoxaluria).
Oxalates are natural chemicals found in plant foods, which if taken in excessive amounts may contribute to the formation of kidney stones. However you really would have to be eating a lot of these every day for months if they were to occur. We also have to understand that there is a marked difference from a high oxalate food and ‘absorbable’ oxalate. If our gut is healthy then our microbes metabolise oxalates and help them pass out the body. Some studies show that boiling (practically to death!) some vegetables will reduce the oxalate levels but this relatively small reduction is a huge sacrifice to the loss of vitamins, minerals and enzymes!
So what other greens can we feast on? Well, as I wandered around local supermarkets I could see a wide variety that we would probably not consider putting in a smoothie or enjoying slightly steamed/stir fried or tossed into a salad. I chose a supermarket to guide me as not everyone has a fantastic market or health food shop.
Spinach – as it’s sweet and it’s one of those greens that you don’t taste, hence why so many get into a comfort zone with it. It’s a great green to start adding to your diet as it has a milder taste.
So, whilst spinach comes under scrutiny for its higher oxalate content, it is advisable not to consume huge amounts of this on a daily basis
Kale – try to find different varieties such as the darker green ‘niro’ kale that contains much higher levels of chlorophyll.
38 www.espmag.co.uk
So here goes…
Time to be a green machine of good health. Dark green lettuce – little gem, romaine, red leaf, butterhead are all varieties that can be added to a smoothie as well as eaten in salads. Avoid iceberg, it’s just water and not much else! Bok Choy – using the greens in stir fries or adding to a smoothie on occasion, chopping/grating the white stem which is fairly sweet to add into a salad. Beetroot greens – most of us take a bunch of beetroot, chop off the tops and discard them but stop, put them in the smoothie or chop into salads. You don’t often find these in supermarkets but when you do, remember to eat them too. Collard greens – those great big juicy green leaves are excellent as a wrap in place of starchy bread ones. Stuff it full of your fave fillings, roll up and munch on just like a wrap. Wheatgrass – most of us are familiar with the wheatgrass shots but you can chop a small chunk of wheatgrass and blitz up a smoothie. I tend to use pineapple which can really disguise the strong chlorophyll rich taste. Basil – yes the herb basil is so delicious in a smoothie, you can mix this in with a smoothie with some strawberries/banana etc. Fennel tops – the greens of these can be washed and popped into a smoothie or chopped into salads which will give the familiar liquorice taste. Swiss chard – great for salads, stir fries, adding to smoothies, juices etc. There are also varieties of green cabbages, mustard or turnip green tops, parsley, coriander and a host of other greens that we can rotate with.
“If our gut is healthy then our microbes metabolise oxalates and help them pass out the body.” To recap, I’m not saying you must look at restricting/lowering oxalates (unless you have a condition where you have to) but want to encourage you to step out of your ‘green’ comfort zone and enjoy nature’s seasonal bounty to bring a wider range of nutrients. Obstacle Races Obstacle races and ‘mud runs’ have taken off at an incredible rate in the last few years, in all sorts of guises for all levels. Many new ones vow to be bigger and tougher than the rest to draw in the hardcore crowds. ‘Weekend Warriors’ push themselves to break from the 9-5 and have a great messy time in these brilliant and entertaining events.
O
ne event that stands tall against all others is from organisers Rat Race in the form of The Dirty Weekend at Burghley House in Stamford and is arguably as they say; ‘The World’s Biggest Obstacle Race’. The event has three distances; the Full-Mucker; 200 obstacles and 20 miles, HalfMucker; 150 obstacles and 13 miles (not to be sniffed at) and two years ago, they introduced the Dirty Double, two laps of the full course, so 40 miles and 400 obstacles. I raced the double in 2015 as I’d just completed the Marathon Des Sables a month earlier so was on top form and placed 2nd which was pleasing to say the least, it’s quite the beast. 40 www.espmag.co.uk
However, this event isn’t just for experienced ultra-runners, there’s something for everyone. There’s a Young Mucker course of 3km or 6km with 20 obstacles for ages 8-15. Men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes make their way around the course. This year my brother Rich took part with a couple of mates – it was great to see him race around too and he even made it look quite easy (poker face). My son Ethan wanted to race this since watching me the first time and finally this year he was old enough (just). I got him a place on the Full-Mucker, he was the second youngest entrant so had a big challenge ahead. A course this big requires a lot of mental strength so he had to dig deep but I was by his side all the way. We set off in the first wave at 8am, taking on obstacles varying from sandbag carries, ball-pools, giant washing machines and space hoppers, to 22ft water jumps, ‘The World’s Longest Monkey Bars (150m)’ and swims across a very cold lake! Ethan like many others was hit hard by the cold which really took your breath away.My fingers became too numb to
even open a bag of crisps at a snack stop. Around 9 miles in Ethan started to become a bit hypothermic, a very lean 16year-old doesn’t retain heat too well. We took some time in a warming tent, I wrapped him and a shivering woman in foil and got them jogging on the spot to warm up. When he felt ready to go again, he fought through cramps, stitch, hypothermia, and complete exhaustion but defiantly soldiered on, passing the 13-mile bail-out point to face 7 more miles and about 2 hours of challenges and eventually we slid together down a giant slide to reach that finish line. In just over six hours Ethan as the second youngest on the course had finished in the top 50% of thousands, it was a very proud and enjoyable day for us both. Okay so not all of it was enjoyable for Ethan but then if it was easy, everyone would do it, right? BILL’S COMING BACK AND DAVID’S BRINGING THE FAMILY We really are blessed with some great comedy shows in Peterborough and it’s been great to see the list of top names coming here get even longer.
E
ven better that the gigs are going so well we’re seeing plenty of return visits with Bill Bailey the latest to announce he’s heading back to the Boro. The man who looks like ‘Princess Leia's wizard uncle’ (his words) brought his Limboland gig to the East of England Arena last year and it’s great he’s decided to return after he jokingly christened it "the shed of despair" commenting that it looked like the kind of place people were taken to after a natural disaster and given blankets and soup! He posted a funny photo on Twitter shortly before he took to the stage which was just the start of a great night of comedy in front of a 2,000 strong crowd
Now he’s set to return to the venue next summer on June 9 (2018) as part of his recently announced Larks in Transit Tour. You can expect Bill’s usual musical virtuosity coupled with surreal tangents as he tackles politics, philosophy and the pursuit of happiness. Plus, he fashions a 42 www.espmag.co.uk
symphony from a ringtone, tells the real story of Old McDonald, and re-imagines the Stars and Stripes! Tickets are now on sale from www.ticketmaster.co.uk. So, the Arena has seen a great line-up of comedy stars including Billy Connolly and Jack Whitehall with John Bishop, Jason Manford and Jasper Carrott also confirmed, but the Cresset also remains a leading light on the local comedy circuit. Their monthly comedy club regularly sells out and with the likes of Jimmy Carr a real fan of the venue they also continue to keep the laughs coming.
COMEDY GIGS PINT OF COMEDY Head down to the Stamford Arts Cente Cellar Bar for more great comedy.
There’s a welcome return from the hilarious New Yorker Kate McCabe plus Alex Hylton, one of the fastest rising comics in the Midlands and a presenter and writer for BlueMoonRisingTV. A youthful, energetic new act with relatable anecdotes of adolescence, mixing in one-liners and a smudge of surrealism. Tickets are £6 on 01780 763203.
SEAN KELLY
15 JUN
A night of stand-up comedy with the larger than life star of Storage Hunters at the South Holland centre in Spalding. The ever-smiling, ever-shouting auctioneer has led a crazy life... be prepared to learn a hell of a lot more about his unusual story in this raw and funny show. Tickets are £15 on 01775 764777.
VOODOO STANDS UP The latest announcement from them is the hugely successful and critically acclaimed show by David Baddiel – My Family: Not The Sitcom. Tickets have just gone on sale for this gig for next year on May 17, 2018. His sell out Olivier-nominated oneman show is about memory, ageing, infidelity, dysfunctional relatives, moral policing on social media, golf, and gay cats. A massively disrespectful celebration of the lives of David Baddiel’s late sex-mad mother, Sarah, and dementia-ridden father, Colin. Celebs and the press have been falling over themselves to praise this one so I wouldn’t hang about booking tickets! The Times said – ‘Hugely funny… If you’re going to disrespect the dead and the incapacitated, do it like this: truthfully, inventively and, finally, lovingly.’ Even Bill tweeted his approval on Twitter – @BillBailey terrific show by @Baddiel. My Family Not the Sitcom is deeply personal, hilarious and touching in equal measure. See it while you can. The Cresset also has Ed Byrne, Jimmy Carr, Paul Chowdhry, Milton Jones and more great comedy lined up so check out www.cresset.co.uk and book now on 01733 265705.

THE CRESSET COMEDY CLUB
30 JUN

Get Ready for a Wonderful Crazy Night I have my tickets and am waiting with anticipation for the incredible concert with Elton John and his band at Peterborough United’s ABAX Stadium. I understand that the man himself is looking forward to his first ever gig in the city, which takes place on Sunday June 11. Elton brings his Wonderful Crazy Night Tour to the home of Peterborough United and the upcoming concert evokes memories for the music icon ahead of what’s sure to be a night none of us will forget. Amazingly during a long career in which he’s toured extensively around the world it’s his first gig in Peterborough. Although, Elton’s fans will remember he did play in the grounds of Burghley House in Stamford in 2000. Elton commented: “I remember going by signs for Peterborough so often when I would travel from London to Bernie’s home in Lincolnshire back when he and I were first writing songs. I can’t believe the concert on June 11 will be my first ever there, or in Cambridgeshire for that matter. My band and I are really looking forward to playing ABAX Stadium and I promise everyone will have a 48 www.espmag.co.uk
wonderful night!” This is quite a historic event in the city as the outdoor concert is the first to ever be held at the ABAX Stadium and the excitement at the venue is building. Of course, if it’s successful it would encourage the organisers to consider more events in the future in what could be an excellent venue for concerts. Posh Commercial Manager Alex Harris told ESP: “We are delighted to be welcoming Sir Elton John to the ABAX Stadium for our first ever concert at the venue. Everyone is very excited about the event and the response from the Peterborough public and beyond has been superb, but we have limited tickets available and I am sure nobody will want to miss this night to remember.” All seating is reserved, tickets in some areas are available for the gig and can be obtained from www.ticketmaster.co.uk. There is also limited availability for VIP packages through www.eltonatabaxstadium.com.
At the beginning of July, The Ploughman in Werrington is holding a music event which not only brings great live bands throughout the weekend but highlights the extensive range of real ales that the pub has to offer. It’s the annual Ploughman Summer Beer Festival, which takes place between Tuesday July 4 and Sunday July 9 and at the weekend it features some of the area’s top bands playing under canvas in the garden. This year’s live music schedule is top class as usual with the Friday July 7 evening kicking off the music with the raw soul of the Motor City Vipers. Saturday afternoon at 3pm features Grounded and Revolver play the evening gig. On Sunday afternoon at 3pm the mass ukuleles of The Palmerston Ukulele Band entertain revellers and at 7pm Hooker rock The Ploughman. It’s all rounded off by a bit of karaoke to finish the weekend in style. As always organisers Andy and Stuart Simmonds are fundraising with a huge raffle and donating the proceeds to a local charity. This year the beneficiary is Halle’s Wish which is trying to fundraise £5,5000 for 4 year-old Halle Heriot to have life changing SDR surgery. To accompany the music and over 60 ales and ciders there’ll be some enticing German sausages on the BBQ and Simmo’s legendary Beef Madras. That’s really everything you could want all in one place over the first weekend in July.
Flashback Photograph Single Release I had the pleasure of talking on the radio to Flashback Photograph before their festival gigs and the band very kindly sent me their latest single release, All the Wrong which is yet another great composition from this talented trio. The folk rock band are Gary Lee Ward on guitar and vocals, Matt Worthington on bass/harmonica/banjolele and Adam Mansfield on drums, and they tell me their music is influenced by artists like Mumford & Sons and Simon and Garfunkel. No surprise that they prove very popular on the festival circuit where their next appearance is at The Strawberry Fair in Cambridge on Saturday June 3. This is followed by two appearances at The Oundle Fringe. Firstly The Ship on Sunday July 2, and then The Talbot on Friday July 7. Their music is definitely worth checking out and they have an EP just released called Myths of Mexico which can be found on iTunes and you can sample their track Proud on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf3Vf_k4FEY

Think Pink Floyd
Think Floyd are returning to Stamford Corn Exchange on Saturday June 17 as part of their 2017 tour. I’ve seen the band a few times myself, and they’re always very impressive. Pink Floyd were always renowned for a big performance on stage and, with their latest show, Think Floyd have managed to faithfully recreate all the atmosphere and visual magnitude of Pink Floyd live on stage. However to achieve the accolade of being commonly regarded as the UK’s finest tribute to Pink Floyd, the band need to be of an incredibly high standard to replicate the complex music of the originals and this group of talented musicians achieve that every time I see them. This year celebrates the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd's first release. Think Floyd's brand new production for 2017 features music from all 15 Pink Floyd albums, starting with the 1967 classic The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, through Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here, to the band’s final release in 2014: The Endless River. The production is backed by an impressive laser light show and a dedicated team of sound and lighting engineers, together with the sheer energy of the band, this promises a first-class evening of pure Pink Floyd. Tickets are available from Stamford Corn Exchange on 01780 766455.

Erasure Support Robbie
After more than 30 years together, Erasure, the duo of Vince Clarke and Peterborough’s own Andy Bell, show no sign of easing up. They’ve just released a new album, (their seventeenth) World Be Gone which sees the award-winning songwriters in a more reflective mood, giving the world and recent political upheavals a thoughtful examination and, as highlighted on the painted artwork showing a ship's masthead rising up from being submerged in the stormy waters, looking forward to the future. And at the beginning of this month they commence a major European tour of 30 dates as support to Robbie Williams. It takes in all major cities in Europe including seven dates in the UK. The nearest to us would be either The Olympic Stadium or Coventry’s Ricoh Arena. Not many bands achieve such longevity so Erasure must be doing something very right, as their many fans would tell you. This city is very proud of Andy. www.espmag.co.uk
