ADVENTURE LAND IS COMING TO SPRINGFIELDS Here’s one to get excited about if you have kids as Springfields gets set to launch their brilliant new Adventure Land attraction. The new Springfields Adventure Land opens at the outlet shopping village in Spalding this summer. It will include the UK’s largest JCB Young Drivers Zone, giving children an exciting opportunity to drive around in bright yellow pedal diggers. They’ll also be able to enjoy the huge JCB slide, and scaffold-themed climbing frame, and let their imaginations take-over on a range of unique interactive play attractions. Families will be able to walk through the trees in the new Tree Top Village that has eight wooden towers and a massive 12 sq m suspended net. Also, Springy’s Beach, offering a sand play area and rockpool water stream all covered by a huge canopy, will delight children who will be able to have fun whatever the weather. Families can try their luck at Dino Golf, with dinosaurs peering around every corner, then pan for gold at Goldie’s Gold Mine. Visitors can ride the miniature railway, aptly named Springy’s Railroad, through the woodland or the take the overground Adventure Land Express train through the scenic, awardwinning Festival Gardens. The new Springy’s American Diner will complement the new leisure development and offer delicious American burgers, fries and shakes, plus a great range of gelato-style icecream. Springy’s Diner also has three party rooms, some of the best in the country, for hire for any occasion. EMPIRE CINEMA HEADING FOR QUEENSGATE Cinema going in the city is set to be transformed with a new 10 screen Empire cinema as the hub in a £60m extension to the Queensgate shopping centre. It marks the return of cinema to the city centre and will be the first Empire Cinema in the region complete with IMAX® and Empire’s own large format IMPACT® screens. The new cinema will boast the biggest screens, ultimate sound, a choice of luxury seating, including ‘comfort boosting’ double sofas or individual electric recliners. Lendlease and Invesco Real Estate have also announced that the 77,000 sq

ft extension of Queensgate will include new leisure space and there is already strong demand from a number of leading restaurant and leisure operators to take space. The extension will also create 200 jobs once complete, adding ten per cent to the total number of people employed by Queensgate.

1940s PARTY @ CATHEDRAL

Peterborough Cathedral is hosting a number of different events over the course of the Peterborough Heritage Festival (June 15 - 17), with the centrepiece being a 1940s Themed Party on Saturday June 16. You’re invited to put on the Ritz, get your glad rags on (period costume is positively encouraged) and get 'In The Mood' for a fabulous time. Ration books will be in use on the evening, and food with a complimentary drink will be provided, as well as a pay bar. Music will be provided by Rita and The Rogues – a live band with a big sound. The group is led by vocalist Rita Rogue (aka Hayley Di Rito), who has performed with rock ’n’ roll shows and big bands in a host of UK theatres. POLISH FESTIVAL AT CATHEDRAL SQUARE It’s good to see the city’s free festivals continue and next month Peterborough’s Polish community will be taking their turn to celebrate their culture in a one-day event in the heart of the city on Sunday July 1. Everyone’s welcome to enjoy singing, dancing and the chance to sample a host of other delights as members of the city’s Polish community take to Cathedral Square. It’s free to go along to this event aimed at promoting Poland through culture, music, dance, business and of course a chance to try the best Polish food.

DAVID HAMILTON In Conversation with David Hamilton is the latest in a series of interviews being held at Castor church with famous personalities. He’s one of Britain’s best known radio and TV stars and will be interviewed by Stewart Francis on Friday June 22 in a lively evening of anecdotes and chat about his long career in broadcasting. Summer Nights: Beach Party Night

Murder Tale Polstead Heads to Serpentine Green Eastern Angles Theatre Company are bringing an exciting new summer show to their venue at Serpentine Green. Polstead, by Beth Flintoff, is the story of Maria Marten and her notorious murder in the ‘Red Barn’ at the hands of William Corder. The killing, which took place in the village of Polstead in Suffolk in 1827 has become one of East Anglia’s most infamous tales. Until now the focus has been on the man-hunt for the murderer, his hanging in Bury St Edmunds and the gruesome tourist industry that surrounds the criminal act. But with this startling new interpretation, Maria will take centre-stage with audiences given the background to her life and the lives of the friends and family who supported her in the build-up to her fatal ordeal. Polstead will be performed at The Undercroft, the company’s exciting popup theatre venue at the Hampton Shopping Centre in July. With a cast of six women and direction from Eastern Angles favourite Hal Chambers (The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart) the show’s set to be an atmospheric mix of music, movement and poignant storytelling. “As soon as Eastern Angles approached me to write the story of Maria Marten I was intrigued,” says Beth. “I hadn’t heard about the murder, but I was fascinated to hear not just the story itself, but about how it has been told to us.” Beth has immersed herself in research, spending time in Suffolk wandering around Polstead and further afield, retracing Maria’s steps. “Then I put all the research aside and tried to think about Maria as a person. Who does she love, what does she do when she’s having fun? I didn’t want her to be a victim any more. As a result, my Maria has emerged as intelligent, brave and wryly funny.” Polstead can be seen at The Undercroft at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre from July 18 – 21. Peterborough Revellers After many years of involvement with local theatre, Clive Read has decided to stand down as chairman of Peterborough Revellers but will say farewell in style with the latest production Spring Has Sprung. It’s time to #lookup as Antony Gormley’s ‘Places to Be’ is back – but this time on Peterborough’s skyline.

ne of our favourite sculptures has returned to Peterborough in spectacular style. Incredibly it was thirty years ago that sculptor Antony Gormley was commissioned to produce ‘Places to Be’ for the city – three life-sized lead statues. Vivacity has now brought them back after repair and has proudly installed the three figures on the rooftops of Queensgate Shopping

Antony Gormley, famous for creating the iconic Angel of the North was at the launch at St Johns Church and said: “Places to Be was my first public commission. It is wonderful that it is being re-sited on a striking modern horizontal parapet, a Victorian corner tower, and the 18th century roof line around the Market Square in the centre of Peterborough. I am very proud of this work and am delighted that with Vivacity’s help it will again be part of the collective life of the town.” It’s hoped the sculptures will be a real talking point for local people but also attract visitors to the city centre. Queensgate Shopping Centre which has one of the figures striding across its rooftop says: “We are honoured to have been part of this historic event for Peterborough that will be enjoyed for many years to come. Queensgate remains committed to actively supporting the arts and heritage of the city, especially in the 900th year celebrations.” Many will remember the figures being displayed outside Greenwoods solicitors in the city centre for a time and also in an exhibition at the City Gallery in Priestgate, the Cathedral and of course in the sculpture park at the Peterborough Rowing Lake, but now they are once again a major attraction.

Ousekjarr, Cambridgeshire’s chapter of The Vikings will recreate the Battle of the Holme an uprising that took place 8 miles south of Peterborough in 902 AD. Colonel John Pickering’s Regiment of Foote from the Sealed Knot Society will also recreate a manhunt from the English Civil War as the Army of Parliament track down a number of fugitive Royalists in the city.

he 10th Peterborough Heritage Festival is now the UK’s largest multi-period city centre living history festival and we get to enjoy some fantastic displays and re-enactments over the weekend of June 16-17 for free! It’s one not to miss and has attracted around 37,000 people in previous years proving it’s a quality event that’s a real pull for both tourists and local people. There’s a special theme to this year’s event organised by Vivacity – ‘Festival of Celebrations’ – so in addition to all the usual staged battles, drills and demonstrations bringing to life over 3,000 years of the region’s history there will also be some extra special events. New for 2018, Lamphouse Theatre will bring a garden party performance entitled ‘This is Peterborough’ which heralds the launch of Vivacity’s ‘Our Journey’ project - a website documenting unique stories from Peterborough’s history. It’s a potted history of Peterborough full of gags and facts about the city which families will enjoy. The performance takes place at 5.30pm on Saturday June 16 in Peterborough Cathedral’s Bishop’s Palace Gardens. This year’s theme of a ‘Festival of Celebrations’ marks not only the 10th anniversary of the Heritage Festival in the city, but three other significant anniversaries. These are the centenary of the end of World War One, the centenary of Women’s Suffrage and 900 years of Peterborough Cathedral.

Celebrate 40 years of Ferry Meadows Country Park this summer Ferry Meadows Country Park will be hosting a number of special events this summer to celebrate its 40th anniversary. Opened back in 1978, Ferry Meadows 220 hectare site is a much loved and well used part of Peterborough. The celebrations planned for the summer include two weekend-long festivals. The first weekend, the Ferry Meadows Cultural Festival, takes place at the end of this month on Saturday June 30 and Sunday July 1 from 10am. Thirteen years ago a group of neighbours met for a BBQ because they wanted to get to know each other and now the St Botolph’s Festival on the Green has become a regular summer fixture enjoyed by everyone. Happy Partner means Happy World Cup really nice, for the entire week leading up to the World Cup. We need to shower her with love, affection and dedication like we did when we first met her. Yes, it’s effort I know, but you’ll benefit in the end.

So, the World Cup is upon us. It happens every four years, which means it’s very special like your wedding day and the birth of your child. But for some reason, our girlfriends, wives, friends with benefits and dating app acquaintances have trouble understanding the importance of football’s most prestigious tournament. More often than not they accuse us men of making them ‘World Cup Widows’, which means effectively ignoring they exist for an entire month. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are two things us guys can put in place to ensure our World Cup comes and goes without any trouble from the other half. Firstly, we need to be nice,

Chris Takes a Couple of Dives There’s no stopping our thrill seeking resident photographer at the moment. In one weekend he abseiled 150 feet down the side of the cathedral and then jumped out of a plane in a tandem skydive the very next day! Chris Brudenell has lost more than seven stones since the end of last year and he’s definitely a different man for it both mentally and physically. He’s an inspiration for what you can do when you put your mind to something and never give up. Curry at my Wedding Please! The last time I was gripped in front of my TV was when Italy won the World Cup in 2006. But I have to say the royal wedding of Harry and Meghan almost topped it for me. It was lovely to see Harry, who’s normally as cool as you like, get some pre-alter jitters and it was even more comforting to see Meghan actually looking like a princess from the minimal make-up she wore to the elegance and simplicity of her timeless dress. But star of the show for me was the Reverend Michael Curry whose rousing speech was both absorbing and uplifting – but more importantly a breath of fresh air, as royal weddings go. Sure, some staunch royalists and traditionalists may have rolled their eyes but let’s remember he was chosen and given the green light by the house of Windsor itself. Hopefully his speech about love, dedication and commitment to one another will inspire couples ‘in love’ to actually embrace love for what it really is instead of treating it with contempt, which seems to be a product of our current generation. I’m loving the newly found affection that Harry and Meghan have brought to the royal family and long may it continue. Harry’s a modernist in royal clothing that’s for sure and it’s something instilled in him by his mother, who we have to thank for allowing her boys to show us they have personality.

900 Young Voices needed for Youth Jam Finale YMCA Trinity Group’s Youth Jam event is set to kick-start the summer with an exciting festival in Cathedral Square on Saturday July 21 showcasing the talents of the city’s young people.

he Big Lottery funded event is organised by YMCA Trinity Group and The Cresset in conjunction with Peterborough Celebrates. It’ll feature everything from dance to sport, music to poetry as well as other stalls and attractions, and it’s continuing to gather momentum with over 25 acts aged between 5 and 25 signed up for performance slots so far.

Schools across Peterborough are invited to get involved and can either sign up to perform the song live as part of an ensemble at Youth Jam or film their school singing along to Boy George’s version during an assembly (these films will be used as a compilation forming the backdrop to the live performance) or do both! Jonathan Martin added: “As the premier youth event in the Peterborough 900 celebrations this would be a fitting way for schools to show their support for both the history and the future of our city.” There are also a limited number of performance slots still available for the day so make sure you get in touch if you have a dance, musical or theatre group looking for their moment in the spotlight at this year’s Youth Jam. Helping spread the word are the event’s Youth Hosts Jessie (16), Akshath (12) and Jacob (11) from Wildcats Theatre School. Jessie said: “I’m really excited to be involved with Youth Jam 18, I can’t wait to

see some of the other performers and to join together for the YMCA song at the end. We’ve started working on our recording already and I think the finale will be a brilliant moment.” All money raised at the event, which runs from 10am – 5pm, will be used for further provision of services for young people in Peterborough such as mental health support and the creation of safe social spaces. KES will be Psychotastic @ Stamford It’s not often tickets start selling for a theatre show in October already but a new local production team is proving a force to be reckoned with.

he show is KES, a retelling of the iconic film, and the team behind it are Zoe Crowson the founder of The Phoebe Research Fund and partner Coronation Street star Steven Arnold. Together they’ve set up a theatre production company called Psychotastic Productions and are bringing KES to the Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre on October 26 and 27. They intend to create further quality

shows in future and pledge that 25% of all profits from every production will go towards supporting The Phoebe Research Fund. Zoe’s daughter Phoebe suffers from RDRB, a dreadful condition which sounds heartbreaking to cope with, but Zoe is determined to do more. After years in Corrie like many soap actors Steven found it hard to be given the opportunity to do fresh work so in the end he created his own play to show people he was more than a TV character and break out of the mould of playing Ashley. KES will now be his 26th stage show since leaving the Street with previous performances including Chaplin and Accrington Pals. Kes was an iconic film from 1970 about a teenage boy training and befriending a kestrel. The stage adaptation will feature Steven playing eight different characters alongside another actor who’ll play the younger Billy Casper. Steven told ESP that KES is a story close to his heart – “The lead character Billy Casper was like every lad in the north and I could really relate to it and associate with how they were.

My dad was really into birds and I could relate to myself growing up – it was such a funny film and it brought back lots of happy memories. “They’re really good characters in the play – as an actor there are so many opportunities to show your range and what you’re capable of,” Steven enthused. “I’ve done these multi part shows before and you have to really change the physicality of the characters – it’s such a challenge but it’s very entertaining and fast paced.” Steven is delighted to be working with director David Crowley who works mainly within theatre and TV and was also associate director at West Yorkshire playhouse. “I’ve worked with David Crowley before and he just blew me away, he’s so talented so we’re really pleased to have him on board and know it’s safe in his hands.” Zoe and Steven have decided to set up the production company so that it hopefully grows over the years, but at the moment they’re seeking vital sponsorship to get the show off the ground. “The response from local businesses has been phenomenal,” said Steven. “If we pull this off there’s every opportunity it could go national. It’s been fantastic that people are booking already and every ticket counts with 25% going directly to Phoebe Research for RDRB sufferers.” Zoe is producing the show and is ensuring the smooth running of the production. Latest trends on show in Queensgate’s spring garden Shoppers at Queensgate were recently invited to see this season’s latest trends for free in a fashionable ‘style garden’ created inside the shopping centre.

SP reporters Leebecca Boodhun and Amy Smith went along to check out the latest trends… Sprung at Queensgate, inspired by Fashion Week, was created into a central square of four different gardens designed

with dazzling flowers to form the perfect spring atmosphere for the audience. Events Coordinator Alice Watkinson told ESP, “What’s fundamental for us is the family element of this event.” With four different zones, each consisting of elements for different ages, this event was truly a family attraction. Children were invited to go to the event to design flowerpots and learn about edible plants in the herb garden. The audience really took a shine to the main Rose Garden where this season’s latest fashion and beauty trends were held. esP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

I have worked at the football club for just under 17 years and prior to joining, initially as an editorial assistant, I was a fan, watching games from the London Road End. I still am a fan by the way, but back then, I was a ‘paying fan’. It is a bit full circle for Matthew. He made his debut for the club at the age of 15. I remember reading the story of how then manager Barry Fry had to get written permission from Matthew’s school to allow him to make his first team debut. He was an exciting winger and it wasn’t long before Tottenham came calling for his services.

I watched some great players growing up from David Farrell to Jimmy Bullard and from Simon Davies to Tony Adcock and have been fortunate in my time as press officer at the ABAX Stadium to meet, interview and have a laugh with all of the aforementioned. Well in May, the football club appointed Matthew Etherington as our new under 18s manager and if he can develop the youngsters at the Academy in the way that he fulfilled his potential then we should have a very exciting future.

He went on to play for West Ham United and Stoke City and represented his country but after starting his playing career at Posh, he is now beginning his coaching career with us. “It does feel like it has gone full circle,” Matthew said. “Peterborough gave me my chance in football as a player and they are now giving me an exciting opportunity as a coach.

“I owe this club a lot. Now it is time for me to give something back. I am really excited and cannot wait to get started. Hopefully I can pass on my experiences as a player to these youngsters coming through. They need to be obsessed about the game because so many kids want to play football.” It was a bit of a family affair back in the day for the Etheringtons. Matthew’s mother used to be the club secretary and his sister worked in the Commercial Department. It’s great that Matthew is back where it all started and I’m sure he will be a huge success as a coach. Away from the appointments to the backroom staff, the playing side has also been bolstered with a couple of new arrivals. Motorpoint match raises cash for Sue Ryder

Motorpoint Peterborough football team took on a Motorpoint Allstars team made up of other Motorpoint employees from across the country at this special game held at Peterborough United’s ABAX stadium last month. Over 40 players took part raising over £550 for Sue Ryder and Motorpoint agreed

to double this so in the end the fund was well over £1,000! Friends and family were there to cheer them on and organiser Lee Watson from Motorpoint told ESP – “The reason we are doing this is to raise as much money as possible for Sue Ryder and also to increase staff engagement across the business. The

day went really well and everyone enjoyed the event.” The final score was Motorpoint Peterborough 2-5 Motorpoint Allstars. Man of the Match was Alex Beeken (Motorpoint Peterborough) and the Wooden Spoon award went to Tom Burley (Motorpoint Peterborough).

LEAP OF FAITH TO MARK 900 YEARS Dozens of people bravely took the challenge to abseil down the Cathedral tower in May to mark its 900th anniversary and to raise thousands for both the cathedral and city based charity SHINE. They included ESP photographer Christopher Brudenell, Heart FM’s breakfast show presenter Kev Lawence, POSH mascot Peter Burrow the rabbit and Carole Hughes from Anna’s Hope as well as many, many more in what proved to be a hugely successful two days. At the same time hundreds of spectators crowded into the grounds to enjoy the royal wedding on a giant outdoor screen on the Saturday in the sun. Liz Hurst from the Cathedral told ESP – “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the abseil, and those who sponsored them, for helping us to raise much needed funds for Shine and Peterborough Cathedral. “The weather was perfect and it was great to see so many people at the live screening of the royal wedding on Saturday – with morris dancing at one end of the Precincts, and the abseil at the other, there was a fantastic atmosphere!”

YOU’RE A 900 RECORD BREAKER … WITH WINGS! It’s time to don your tutu, strap on your fairy wings and grab your wand to be part of a world record breaking event at Peterborough cathedral this month. As part of the Peterborough Celebrates campaign making 900 years of the cathedral, Stamford based charity Anna’s Hope has set a challenge to bring together 900 ‘fairies’ in the cathedral grounds on Sunday June 10. If they manage it they hope to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Fairies in One Place. The attempt is part of the Peterborough 900 Celebrations and will take place in the grounds in front of Peterborough Cathedral. To break the world record the charity need at least 900 fairies so please tell your family and friends and to qualify as a fairy, you must wear a TUTU and WINGS and carry a WAND and fairies are asked to arrive by 12.30. Meghan Trainor It’s set to be the summer of Meghan Trainor as she hits the charts with more catchy tunes and a third album. ESP’s Sarah Tempest says it’s not just ‘all about that bass’ anymore…

n a world where the misguided and confidence Sarah Tempest deprived aim to survive on edamame beans and manuka honey in the quest for the elusive size zero, Meghan Trainor was a breath of fresh air when she exploded onto the music scene in 2014. Proudly celebrating her ‘all the right junk in all the right places’, the American singer/songwriter’s breakout single All About That Bass fast became an anthem for female empowerment worldwide. With wise words from her mother that ‘Boys like a little more booty to hold at night’, the upbeat pop tune and powerhouse vocals didn’t just make it OK to have curves, it made them positively desirable; Kim K, eat your booty heart out. Since then, she’s gone on to become one of the most prominent artists in pop with seven multi-platinum singles, two platinum albums, three sell out headline tours and countless industry awards and nominations worldwide. Sometimes, people talk down to me, because I’ve only been doing this for four years, so I wrote this song. It’s my modern version of ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T’. It’s all about equality and being kind.” Then on June 4 Megan is hitting radio with not one, but two new songs. First up it’s the sassy and sexy single Let You Be Right punctuated by funky bass and finger-snaps driving the beat along. The second track is called Can’t Dance and is another confident and catchy banger. Meghan says she’s super excited about touring the album and can’t wait – “Oh my gosh yeah. I mean there’s only one slow song. Everything else is a hundred and five and up, you know? It’s up there. So we’re gonna be dancing, which is also why I’m working out a lot. At least the final trailer has shown that dinosaurs could rule the world again (after the disappointingly drab teaser) with the main protagonists from the first film – Chris Pratt’s dino trainer Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard’s former operations manager/turned dinosaur activist Claire Dearing – headlining the sequel. After the demise of the Jurassic World theme park on Isla Nublar – where the

dinosaurs have roamed freely on the island for three years – an impending volcanic eruption threatens their very existence. So Claire creates a dinosaur rescue organisation – with the aid of John Hammond’s former partner Benjamin Lockwood (LA Confidential’s James Cromwell) – to try and bring the creatures to a sanctuary in America with the aid of her on-off boyfriend Owen, who is enticed into the mission to save Blue, the last of the velociraptors he trained. The previous film’s acclaimed writer Taylor Sheridan also returns to scribe, as the drug war on the US-Mexico border escalates with cartels now trafficking terrorists – and the CIA’s top agent Matt Graver (Brolin) and former undercover operative Alejandro Gillick (Del Toro) are sent to eliminate the problem. The mission then goes awry when they kidnap the daughter of a drug lord and her execution is ordered. But Gillick refuses and turns rogue to protect her – and a team is sent to hunt them both.

IT’S TAKE 2 FOR CITY ACTOR ESP Magazine is always keen to help showcase local talent – whether it be a writer, dancer, entrepreneur, sportsman or anything else. An actor we’ve supported throughout the years is Lewis Saunderson and ESP’s Mikey Clarke caught up with him to find out about his new film and business...

he Peterborough lad who attended Ken Stimpson school and Peterborough Regional College, went on Mikey Clarke to train at the prestigious East 15 Acting School, graduating in 2008 with a BA (Hons) Degree in Acting and has since been building up a healthy body of professional work in front of the camera. Last time we spoke to him, Lewis was starting his own business venture Take 2 the Screen. This included a weekly ‘acting to camera class’, which was a chance for locals to show off their acting skills in front of the camera and learn more about the film industry and how it works behind the scenes.

“There were so many great moments but I am probably most proud of our ﬁnal production, Mask – a child friendly horror ﬁlm” Now this particular service within the business venture has come to an end, I wanted to catch up with the actor to find out how successful it had been and find out what’s next. “To fill people in, my best friend and business partner (Amir Elam) and I started Take 2 the Screen because we wanted to offer something different,” Lewis told me. “There were plenty of acting classes but none that purely focused on being in front of a camera. It’s a very different way of acting. On stage, people tend to be larger than life as they’re performing to an entire audience. The camera picks up even the smallest details so often less is more – which doesn’t come naturally to everyone. “Another difference is that when acting on stage, you’re often performing for a while before a poignant moment occurs. When filming to the camera you don’t know the order in which they’ll want to shoot. On the very first day you could be filming a death scene with someone you’ve never even met. Rather than building up that emotion, you’re expected to produce the goods the moment they shout ‘Action!’” 32 www.espmag.co.uk

Throughout Take 2 the Screen’s three years, I wondered what the highlight was. “There were so many great moments but I am probably most proud of our final production, Mask – a child friendly horror film. I think people sometimes have misconceptions of how good the quality of a youth project is going to be – not expecting much. We put a lot of time and money into Mask. We had a great script with a twist ending that nobody saw coming. The sets were fab, the make-up looked incredible and everyone acting in it was amazing. The reaction to the film was great and I couldn’t have been prouder of the children involved in it. At some point in the future I’d love to make an adult horror version of it.” One of the reasons for Take 2 the Screen’s ‘acting-to-camera’ service coming to an end is because Lewis struggled to invest the amount of time needed for it (with lots happening behind-the-scenes) whilst continuing with his own acting career. The local actor actually filmed a movie whilst still managing the business. The Rizen: Possession is about a group of young urban explorers and a private military unit who could become the final pieces in a 60year plan to reopen a door that should have stayed closed. But what they unleashed could almost tear our world apart. This is the sequel to The Rizen which is now out on DVD and Lewis’s movie will be out later this year. Lewis described this filming experience as, “Amazing – I’m at my happiest when I’m on a film set. Because they filmed the two movies back-to-back, it was a good couple of years ago when we finished. I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with the sequel during that time. It’s going to be great watching it in all its edited and polished glory. I’m one of the lead actors and I really hope people like it.”

Lewis Saunderson As an actor, Lewis likes to perform on a regular basis to polish his skills. A while back, he filmed a video titled, ‘Father’s Final Words to his Dying Son’ – which was a dramatic monologue that was mostly taken from a Denzel Washington film called John Q. Unexpectedly, the footage went viral – receiving half a billion views across numerous platforms. “This was very bitter/sweet,” Lewis said. “It was great that the video was being seen by so many people but many of them thought it was real. I made it clear in the original video that this wasn’t the case – even mentioning the Denzel movie – but then media companies abroad posted the footage (without asking me first) stating that it was genuine. I even saw that it had played out on the news in China. Luckily most people know that I was never trying to fool anyone and simply acting – with LadBible kindly referring to it as an Oscar worthy performance.” Throughout the three years of Take 2 the Screen, Lewis and Amir would use the money made in the business to invest in their media future. Today, they’ve grown and branched out as a video production company still under the name of Take 2 the Screen and mainly focus on writing, producing, directing, editing and distributing hard-hitting stories with powerful messages. They’ve established themselves locally and globally with their powerful digital content via social media platforms, most notably through their YouTube channel which currently has over 7 million views and 25 thousand subscribers. We get the feeling you’ll be hearing the name Lewis Saunderson a lot more in the future. You’ll no doubt see his (and Amir’s) future achievements posted on our Facebook and Twitter page so keep an eye out.

Sifting through old photographs I couldn’t help but notice the shape, tone and youthfulness of a body I had in my 20’s – but cringed at the thoughts I remembered sending it almost daily.

There is a fine dividing line between normal ‘body-building’ and Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder. It is a sub-culture stigmatised from society but it is important to separate as MDD is often described as the same as body-building. A similar situation exists in describing the difference between a person with BDD and a person without BDD who is seeking cosmetic surgery. A person with normal body-building does not have a distorted body image. Normal body-building is a rigorous lifestyle but unlike MDD it is not a preoccupation with muscles that are too puny. It does not cause significant distress or interfere with your life. It’s characterised by excessive time weightlifting. Like MDD, there are often special diets and supplements or steroid misuse.

Looking over that photo brings tears to my eyes as I look at that younger version and think, ‘wow I didn’t look that bad’ (except for the hair styles!) and what was I thinking? What blinkered glasses I must have been wearing. I took for granted that I was walking around in a naturally youthful and toned body yet gave it such a hard time internally. It’s something many of us are guilty of and for most it is transient as we learn to love and accept ourselves warts and all as we get older. Today however, there are more and more issues related to body image which extends way beyond those teenage and 20 something years. With access to the minute details of other people’s lives on social media platforms we find that our insecurities, low self esteem and low self worth are magnified as many look through those social media lenses and feel that they need to fit in with society norms which are pretty screwed up! Body image isn't just a women's problem. Many studies reveal that a surprisingly high proportion of men are dissatisfied with, preoccupied with, and even impaired by concerns about their appearance. One American study https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC 1121529/ - B1) for example, found that the percentage of men dissatisfied with their overall appearance (43%) has nearly tripled in the past 38 www.espmag.co.uk

25 years and that nearly as many men as women are unhappy with how they look.

Of course symptoms will vary in severity but BDD (according to www.mind.org.uk – link below) can lead to:

In men there’s a term known as Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder (MDD) which is a type of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). The information below is taken from the Body Disorder Dysmorphic Association (see link below).

It is popularly known as Reverse Anorexia or Bigorexia by the media. It consists of a preoccupation with not being sufficiently muscular or lean (when this is not the case). Sports, wrestling and body building gyms can be a breeding ground for muscle dysmorphic disorder. It is characterised by: •

Excessive time and over-exertion in weightlifting to increase muscle mass

Preoccupation and panicking over workout if unable to attend

•

Over training or training when injured

•

Disordered eating, using special diets or excessive protein supplements

Steroid abuse and often other substance misuse

Self-harm

Many people with BDD don’t seek help because they’re worried that people will judge them or think they’re vain. This means that many people with BDD are likely to experience it for a long time before seeking support. ituated on the edge of Snowdonia this small festival is getting a name for itself as one of the best comedy festivals in the country, and after visiting for the first time last year I knew I had to visit again. Travelling to Machynlleth is not for the faint hearted however as it takes a five hour drive along both motorways and small dwindling country roads, where you’ll encounter some stupendously steep hills and the odd suicidal sheep here and there. Wi-Fi and phone reception are also non-existent in the Welsh countryside, but it’s perfect if you’re looking for a jam-packed weekend of comedy where you can truly switch off. With a notebook in hand I travelled into Machynlleth (pronounced ‘Ma-cunk-leth’) on the Friday with a schedule of 17 shows already booked (this spreadsheet queen had already organised them by date, venue, and any available breaks for food in between). Alongside several big comedy venues the festival also offers theatre shows, live music, pop-up food stalls, and an impressive collection of ales, ciders and beers – a staple at any good British festival. This year there were some big comedy names performing at the festival over the weekend, including Rhod Gilbert, James Acaster, and Joe Lycett. I focussed more on seeing up and

coming acts in an attempt to predict potential nominees at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe festival, where for the past seven years I’ve been a scout for the comedy awards. I’m glad to say the majority of the shows I booked were a worthwhile venture, however here are a few of my favourites for you to keep an eye on in case they come to Peterborough, or if you’re also planning to visit the Fringe this year:

Richard Gadd Whilst his latest work in progress show is labelled as theatre, I was overwhelmed at this show’s debut as Gadd has clearly discovered his strengths at captivating storytelling. After winning Best Show at the Edinburgh Fringe back in 2016, this show was one of the festival’s hottest tickets and without giving too much away, it tells a gripping story of a woman who’s been haunting Gadd’s life for the past few years. Whilst the show doesn’t offer laughs a minute (and nor does it claim to) I can guarantee you’ll be impressed by this emotional and darkly comedic performance.

Anna Mann A compulsory ticket for any comedy festival goer, Anna Mann is just one of those acts that you can’t see anywhere else. From the mastermind of established character comic Colin Hoult, Anna Mann is an instantly likeable entertainer thanks to her quick wit and natural rapport with an audience. Playing a seasoned actress and star of several niche theatrical productions, I’d highly recommend her solo shows, her late night cheese parties, and pretty much anything else she decides to star in!

Whilst my comedy nerd friends can disagree on several things, there is a unanimous consensus amongst us regarding Steen’s most recent show - it should have been nominated for an award. If you’re looking for a feel-good hour of character comedy suitable for all ages, tastes and temperaments, and where your face will physically ache from laughing by the end of it, then this is the show for you. There’s improv, characters and a good chunk of audience participation, however Steen offers buckets of charm and charisma which help him to win over even the most stubborn of audiences.

Mcv’s Sing the Mayor Out in Style I recently had the pleasure of attending the Mayor of Peterborough’s Farewell Ball at The Holiday Inn. It was to celebrate the year spent by Councillor John Fox as Mayor of the city. It’s the end of a busy year for John and his wife Judy, and I think they should be very proud of their work and achievements during the past 12 months – not to mention exhausted! The evening was a great success and raised more important funding for The Mayor’s Charities. John chose three, Peterborough Sea Cadets, Shopmobility and Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust and they have all shared in the proceeds from his year in tenure. John and Judy should also be congratulated on their perception in choosing the entertainment for the evening. It gave me the chance to see the Motor City Vipers perform in a very different environment to where I’ve seen them before. However, MCV’s performance was no different – it had the same quality, energy and enthusiasm as always . And they fitted into the atmosphere of a ball perfectly.They always wear suits anyway so they matched the dress code without trying. Good to see Andy Whittaker back behind the mic and I grabbed a photo with the Mayor and MCV. Bad lighting but I’m between Mayor John Fox and singer Haylie Mason (Hayley’s the one in the dress!)

New Album from Rosie & Matt

Peterborough based 'rockney' due Rosie & Matt have recently released their debut album Lovely Jubbly, recorded locally at Rocket Park Studios in Westwood. The pair are Ian 'Rosie' Rose (age 72 – lead vocals, kazoo, washboards) and his son-inlaw Matt Worthington (age 28 – backing vocals, ukulele, banjo, spoons) and together they've spent several years performing their brand of upbeat, foot-tapping, singalong music at 1940’s events all over the country. In early 2017, Rosie & Matt recorded a short EP (Now Then You Lot!) to celebrate Rosie's 70th birthday which was very wellreceived by their audience. They even received a lovely note of approval from Chas & Dave, who they’re clearly influenced by. This encouraged the duo to expand it to a full album, which they’ve titled Lovely Jubbly!.You can get a copy of the CD from Rosie & Matt at any of their gigs or on iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer and other download services.

The Stamford Blues Rhythm and Rock Festival The Stamford Blues Rhythm and Rock Festival is scheduled for the Corn Exchange in the centre of Stamford on Sunday June 17 starting at 2pm and running through until 10pm. Included in the line up are the nine piece Danny Bryant Big Band celebrating the release of their new album. Then there’s a famous name with a different line-up, Ken Pustelnik's Groundhogs. Renowned drummer Ken was an original member of the Groundhogs who once were invited to support the Stones at one of their early giant open air gigs. I personally love hearing a good harmonica sound and the Festival also features Paul Lamb, who’s known by aficionados and music press around the world as a foremost blues harmonica exponent, forging himself a place in the history books as one of the greatest players of our time. Countless awards have been won by him and his band The King Snakes. Many other acts are on the bill and there’ll be a range of beverages available and a varied menu that should meet everyone's taste! Live Bands Announced For ‘Boro Beer Fest!

Ploughman Beer Festival The Ploughman has pulled a master stroke for their Beer Festival on the weekend of July 6, 7 and 8. They have on offer 50+ real ales and ciders plus 47 speciality gins as well as the usual international food being served (German sausages!). They have a real ale preview night on Tuesday July 3 so that you can decide what you’re going to drink at the weekend gigs, and the music is top drawer. Friday evening starts with a bang when Children of The Revolution take the stage. Saturday features some of the same artists performing under two different names and spanning different decades of music with Bobafett in the afternoon and The Nuggets at night (should be OK as long as Karl doesn’t fall off the wall in the afternoon!). Sunday sees a lunchtime session from the very popular Lava Lamp Lighters and the excellent Groove Cartell funk to finish the festival from 3pm until close. Good luck to Simmo and congratulations for putting on a great weekend of high quality bands.

Charity Music Day @ The Yard Of Ale If you want a good haircut and to listen to some great bands at the same time then head to The Yard of Ale in Woodston on Sunday July 1 for a day of fun and music. The headshave and all events during the day are all to raise charity funds and there’s a fabulous line up of bands playing during the day. Children of the Revolution, Retrolux, Citizen Smith, The Expletives, Third Stone from the Sun and Last Minute Brigade are all performing and in addition to the excellent liquid refreshment that you can get at the bar there’ll be a BBQ, a raffle and lots of fun for everyone.

The line up’s been announced for The Peterborough Beer Festival at the end of August and there are some exciting acts to look forward to! I’ll give a bigger run down in August’s ESP but Wednesday features local rockers Last Minute Brigade whilst Thursday features punk & new wave four piece, The Expletives together with a band who’ve opened for some of the biggest names in the rock business – Walkway. Friday sees the return to the Beer Festival stage for the Dizzy Miss Lizzys. They went down a storm a couple of years ago and it’s great to see them back. They’re preceded on stage by The Palmy Uke Band and Revolver with the music stage starting at 4pm – go straight from work! Saturday has an all-day music line up starting at 2pm with Velocity, Meg MacPartlin, locals Third Stone From the Sun, and The Broadcasters. The evening session starts with The Hot One Two who it’s claimed are ‘putting back the swagger into UK rock’. Hailing from Cambridge the five piece combine classic rock with a modern attitude and performance. The evening finishes with The Killerz. Not a typo but an excellent tribute to The Killers. The Killerz are as close as you can get to chart toppers. The band prides itself on its overall likeness – the music, the look and the energy created by the band makes you feel like you’re watching the real thing. This could be a great climax to the Beer Festival which runs between August 21 to 25 on Peterborough Embankment.

Peterborough has lost yet another musician with the death of bass player, Martin (Buggy) Bugg. Martin had been ill for some time and gave up playing a few years ago. He started out playing bass with Mick Davison and Les Woods in The Davison Woods Band and then The Les Woods Band, Legend, Tut and Frankly My Dear. Martin was an excellent bass player and to the many who knew him was one of the good guys and a gentleman who would help anyone out especially if it involved tinkering with old cars and motorbikes. He was last seen out on his birthday back in March at The Yard of Ale watching his old band Frankly My Dear. He will be sadly missed. www.espmag.co.uk

IDOLISING NOVA IN EUROPE! Peterborough lads Idolising Nova have been on our radar for a while now so we were excited to hear they’d clinched a gig supporting the hugely popular band The Vamps. Chloe Wilkinson grabbed a word with the guys after the concerts for ESP...

eterborough’s favourite home-grown indie-rock band, Idolising Nova have recently sailed across Europe supporting The Vamps alongside New Hope Club. I spoke to vocalist Jack about tour life and what the threepiece plan to do next… Playing three shows in Cologne, Paris and Amsterdam, the boys performed to some of the biggest crowds they’d seen. “All three shows were amazing. The buzz we had after the first show in Amsterdam was really special as we all got a bit emotional and couldn’t quite believe what had just happened! The crowd in Paris were just mental and they sang, clapped and jumped during the whole set.” When asking Jack about how the shows have benefited them as musicians, we spoke about the experience that he and his band mates Kris (guitar) and Kyle (drums) gained from performing to big crowds in large venues. “Cologne was the last show and also the biggest venue, so that was awesome too. The reaction we got at both the shows and on social media has

Bourne Festival is Back Don’t miss Bourne Festival which officially gets summer underway from June 1 – 3. been brilliant, our fan base has definitely increased.” During the tour, Idolising Nova played shows with The Vamps whose recent album Night and Day reached number one in the UK album charts. “They [The Vamps] were lovely lads. They all said that we smashed it, which meant a lot to us. I think we definitely made a name for ourselves!” After the success of the tour, the band are focusing on recording and writing new music for their rapidlyincreasing fan base. “Being able to play your music to thousands of new people - very surreal, but it made us feel very proud and very excited for the future of Idolising Nova.” The guys are playing Camden next on July 5, with several festival announcements coming soon so be sure to keep an eye on their social media @IdolisingNova for new music and live dates. There’s a great one just on our doorstep later this summer that just keeps getting better and better. Green Meadows Festival is now in its seventh year and has now announced its biggest ever line up for the annual three day event at Elton Hall near Peterborough. The festival runs from August 10-12 and has grown year on year, winning a national award in 2017 from FestivalKidz.com as the best small festival.
