PETERBOROUGH BACKS SPORT RELIEF

It’s the big Sport Relief fundraiser on Friday March 23 and loads of local people will be doing their bit to raise cash for some great causes. The team at RSA Peterborough have been chosen once again to man the phones for this year’s Sport Relief having done such a brilliant job for Comic Relief last time. They’ll be manning 75 phone lines from 10pm – 3am taking the donations from callers all over the country and doing plenty of fundraising in the office themselves too! Over at Peterborough Greyhound Stadium on Friday March 23 the restaurant staff are doing a virtual London to Brighton on a bike for Sports Relief – 54 miles from the start of the first greyhound race to the last. Can their team do it? DRIVE IN MOVIE NIGHTS Look out for a new series of drive in movie nights coming to Sacrewell near Wansford this Easter break from March 30 – April 14. They’ll be showing family favourites and classics including Star Wars, Harry Potter, Spectre, The Lion King, Frozen, Grease and many more! Star Wars fans will be in Jedi heaven at Burghley’s 2018 exhibition in the Sculpture Garden, thanks to a full-scale replica model of a Star Wars TIE Silencer spacecraft. Stamford inventor and YouTube sensation Colin Furze has made the full size replica of Kylo Ren’s fighter from the latest Star Wars film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, using only parts sourced from EBay. It hit the headlines after being briefly previewed late last year in the parkland at Burghley, but the model will now go on display as the star attraction of the new ‘Otherworldly’ sculpture exhibition in the Sculpture Garden from May to October. Exploring the surreal, strange, magical, cosmic and interplanetary, other exhibits include a helicopter-ish UFO, a giant origami rocket ready to launch from the ice house and a man polishing the moon.

EASTER BEER FEST @ CHARTERS It’ll be brews and tunes this Easter over at Charters bar on Town Bridge. The big Easter Beer Festival is on from Thursday March 29 – Monday April 2. As well as a wide variety of ales they’ll also have a range of gins and ciders to try too. Free entertainment kicks off with a quiz on the Thursday, followed by music from Groovapolitan on the Friday, Retrolux on the Saturday and rounding up Sunday afternoon at 3pm with The Stringlers. Amanda’s been the manager for nine years, ever since popping in to buy herself a bracelet and chatting to Sandra Marshall, the now former owner. Sandra has retired from the business and Amanda is now the proud owner of Style, something she’s always dreamed of. Style, which was opened ten and a half years ago by Sandra, has been extremely

The SSP Foundation supports charities across the UK, including those nominated by employees and those working to promote healthy eating. The manager of Millie’s Cookies in Queensgate, Megan Watson, put Anna’s Hope forward. “I am beyond thrilled that my nominated charity was chosen to receive £1,000,” says Megan. She continued “I decided to put Anna’s Hope forward as they are the centre’s Charity of the Year and I think the work they do is so important and really does provide vital support to children and families who have

gone through an extremely tough time. I hope this donation gives them a helping hand for 2018.” So far, Anna’s Hope have raised a fantastic £10,982.31, with the help of being Queensgate’s Charity of the Year.

A great new musical stage show celebrating the life and music of the legendary Dusty Springfield and the popstars of the Sixties is stopping off at the Key Theatre this month. Vivacity’s Easter Eggstravaganza

Vivacity has Easter activities covered from a sports holiday club to family theatre, Footy Reads at the library to Time Travellers at the Museum. Star Party @ Sacrewell If you were one of the many people gazing up at the super moon a few weeks back and are partial to a bit of star gazing you might fancy a night out at Sacrewell. Peterborough Astronomical Society (PAS) are holding their biannual Star Party on Saturday March 10. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert they’ll bring along their telescopes and give you the lowdown on the sky at night. They also create a planetarium-style display and walk you through the sky at night, using apps and technology that is available to all and easy to use. Doors open at 5.30pm and the event finishes at 9pm (last entry at 8pm) with a programme of talks and displays throughout the evening. If you want to get the kids out in the fresh air, wear them out at Ferry Meadows on Friday March 30 at the park’s big Easter Egg Hunt. There’ll be some seasonal spring crafts, a chance to explore the park and hunt for eggs and collect a prize and the end, (1 prize per child booked). If your garden just doesn’t cut it when it comes to sending the kids out hunting for Easter eggs, supersize their Easter fun with a trip to Burghley House in Stamford. The popular Burghley Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday April 1 should do the trick! It’s all taking place in the Gardens of Surprise, from 11am to 5pm (last admission 4.30pm) with a treasure hunt and riddles to solve to claim a full size chocolate egg from the Easter Bunny. Stand Up Paddle boards are increasingly popular and great fun and the guys have come up with a new idea where you have to paddle around the lakes to find the egg pictures. There’ll be a prize for the person who finds the most. If you’d like to join in the hunt there’s a £5 entry fee and it’s £5 to hire a stand up paddle board if needed but you can launch your own board for free (must have third party insurance). We marked the start of the Year of the Dog at Serpentine Green with… a dragon boat! Shoppers joined us to climb aboard and beat the drum to mark Chinese New Year and encourage more entrants to the 20th Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival. Organised by Gable Events it’s all happening on Saturday June 9 at Peterborough Rowing Lake, Thorpe Meadows and up to 50 teams will battle it out over the 200-metre course, cheered on by their supporters who’ll be able to enjoy lots of bankside activities between races. ESP is proud to be the print media partner for the event and our ESP Motley Crew will be climbing aboard once again to challenge local businesses, groups and organisations to a great day of racing. We had such a laugh last year and would encourage anyone thinking of giving it a go to sign up. You really don’t need to be an expert or super fit and it’s a really enjoyable day out in between races chilling with a BBQ on the bank enjoying commentary by Connect FM. Crews are invited to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice before and on the day of the race. CITY WORKERS TAKE THE 900-STEP CHALLENGE Peterborough City Council is setting its staff various 900-themed challenges this year as part of the Peterborough Celebrates campaign. In February they were invited to take The 900 Step Challenge. Using an app to record their footsteps, employees set out on a walk into the Precincts and around the Cathedral Visitor Centre. The route then took them into the Cathedral itself, down its whole length and back again, taking in the sights along the way. The route finished in Becket’s Tea Room. The Council’s Quality Assurance Team were quick to put their footsteps to the test and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. “Our team has a really 12 www.espmag.co.uk

strong team ethic and we’re always looking for ways to be healthy together so the 900 Steps Challenge was a good fit for us. We were really impressed by the warm welcome we received at the Visitor Centre and thought the displays were attractive and informative. The Cathedral itself is a stunning piece of architecture and a rich treasure trove of Peterborian history. We were treated to a warm welcome here too and particularly enjoyed talking to the two ladies who were stationed at the leaflet display who generously shared their first hand experiences of Peterborough through the ages. It was great to see so many school groups enjoying the space too.”

NENE THE CONCERT There are dozens of special events already lined up as part of the Peterborough Celebrates campaign including several new additions. One of these is a new orchestral piece being presented by Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust, Rutland Music and Peterborough Music Hub at the Cathedral called Nene. Nene is being performed on Saturday March 17 and is written by local composer Benjamin Till. The piece celebrates the people, places and history of the River Nene as it flows from Northamptonshire, through Peterborough and out to the sea. Premiered last November at the Music for Youth Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, the piece will feature youth orchestras and choirs from around the region. When it came to doing something for Peterborough Celebrates the 900th Anniversary of Peterborough Cathedral the Nene Valley Railway team thought that they’d better do something really spectacular. With the theme being '900' they thought... why not give away 900 free rides?! This month the railway will be doing just that, throwing open the carriage doors as part of their open weekend on March 17 and 18. Those visiting the Railway's Wansford headquarters will be entitled to free entry to the site plus a free complimentary ride on the shuttle service to Yarwell station and back. Nene Valley Railway is a local gem, famous for great steam rides, Thomas the Tank Engine and a popular filming location since 1977 and the ever-popular open weekend gives visitors the chance to go behind the scenes and see how the NVR operates from day to day. It's International Women's Day this month as well as Mother’s Day and it’s got me thinking about some of the ladies I know and how they deserve some praise. But rather than highlight the usual suspects like business leaders and other prominent and successful women in our city that normally get the headlines, I thought I’d give a thumbs-up to everyday ladies that I think deserve recognition. They are in no particular order; all these women are just as important as one another. This is by no means an exhaustive list. There are dozens more names – you know who you are – and I’m respecting your privacy.

The Beehive is the only pub in town when you can get takeaway fish and chips and sit at the bar and enjoy them with a pint. Lauren Trevor took over this historic pub two years ago and only those living on Mars could be blamed for not noticing the excellent transformation it's undergone during this time. Décor is all about vintage and retro and there's appreciation for Posh too with some great framed examples of London Road jerseys from yesteryear. There's also a bright, modern restaurant too. But if you want your chips on the go then you can use the takeaway entrance, which is situated at the end of a fabulous mural (by the talented team at Street Arts Hire!) that extends along the

length of the outside wall. On Mondays at 8pm there's a poker tournament, which is part of a national league and anyone can join in – and there's an open mic session every Wednesday. You're spoilt for sport on the box too with three big TVs with all Sky and BT Sport programmes available. The Beehive is good for a game of pool too and the comfy booths allow plenty of space to play chess (the board is part of the table) or scrabble. And if you're into music there are live music nights twice a month with local bands and solo artists and there’s a jazz funk event on Easter Sunday. But seriously, try the delicious fish and chips. Yum.

It’s a tradition I look forward to every year and I’ve been polishing my chrome ready for this special ride. Likeminded scooter owners from miles around will be converging at The Heron pub in Stanground on Saturday March 17 for the 21st Easter Egg Run in aid of Sue Ryder. The run starts at 1pm and there’s a custom show beforehand at 12 noon. Hundreds of scooterists are expected and even if you don’t ride it’s worth coming along just for the atmosphere alone. We have an exciting season of shows returning to Peterborough this month in some unusual locations. The Platform8 Festival is now in its fourth season and it’s all about bringing us some really interesting productions and theatre events. Kate Hall from Jumped Up Theatre is one of seven partners chosen to work with Battersea Arts Centre to create seasons of exciting new theatre events in cities and towns across the UK and Peterborough is one of them. In the past they’ve staged events at The Green Backyard, in boxing gyms, shopping centres, colleges and community centres, and this season there are six shows, with one week of performances in March and another in April. The first show to kick the festival is Live Before You Die by Byron Vincent and Dave McGinn which is a fun show that tackles a tricky topic. Byron Vincent has a reputation for creating hilarious shows about difficult subjects and Live Before You Die, which is

coming to The Brewery Tap on Tuesday March 20 is no exception. What do you do when you have a best mate who is so sad he might die? Especially when up until now your friendship has mostly consisted of a mutual appreciation of 90’s hip hop, borderline alcoholism and finding creative ways to insult each other. In a world where female friendships are celebrated, from Loose Women to Gossip Girls, it’s Byron and Dave’s mission to explore what their friendship means to them. Other shows to look out for in March are The Headwrap Diaries by Uchenna Dance at The Gladstone Centre and Anonymous, a digital theatre piece by the young people of URock Ensemble at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre. And then in April, Ugly Chief by Victoria Melody is a father-daughter comedy with a jazz band and a taboo busting funeral, and Sponge is a groovy dance show for the under 4’s by Turned On Its Head. Resist! Vegan Kitchen appears at The Ostrich Inn (17 North Street) on selected days, and is already proving a big hit with local residents. Resist! started when Peterborough local Gareth Ellison's came up the idea when he discovered feeding hungry gig goers went down so well that he became inspired to take the idea to the next level. E C I F O S E L I M 100 Surprisingly, running 100 miles across a frozen Mongolian lake at -47c wasn’t ever something I had on my bucket list. However, when the opportunity came up, I was all over it, why wouldn’t I be? We were invited by Rat Race Adventure Sports to be guinea pigs to see if this could be done, to cross this epic lake, 85 miles long, 22 miles wide and 262m deep. shake out the snow that formed in my sleeves! Breath would freeze your eyebrows and eyelashes together. I lost feeling in my fingers too many times, just from losing an outer glove long enough to grab a snack. This was painful and worrying every time.

usually aim to take on at least one big challenge each year to raise money for local charity Anna’s Hope, and I figured this one counted as a biggy. So, three flights and a 100km drive across the two million year old lake, I was on the startline – yes, we drove in convoy across the ice! Our Mongolian support crew were amazing and such humble people who we learned so much from. Their simple lives can be an example to us all. We really don’t need half of the tat and clutter in our needy, over-busied western lives. A crucial thing about surviving in such conditions is personal admin, looking after your kit. If it’s not within three feet of a fire, then everything freezes; toothpaste, wet wipes, food, socks, even your own breath on your face. In these temperatures, you can have as little as sixty seconds before exposed fingers start to go numb, and other parts too when you need the loo! I was even able to perform a neat science trick, where I threw a cup of hot water in the air and most of it turned to misty snow and didn’t come down (watch on Instagram @dgrigas). We started on the ice at sunrise, having already packed in darkness, the temperature was -47c but I had to slightly underdress so once running I didn’t sweat too much – sweat is bad, it freezes inside your clothes – I had to take off my jacket to 20 www.espmag.co.uk

The enormity of the lake was jaw dropping, the vast sheet of ice over a metre thick would expand and contract and you could hear it constantly creaking and crunching, huge bangs like cannons firing in the distance would echo through the ice.

For the three days, we ran all day and then camped on shore at night, the first couple of days were roughly marathon distances but in very unusual conditions. At night, we sat around the campfire eating wild boar or reindeer that had been hunted and prepared for us. Around us in the treeline wolves were howling (this was amazing), as we ate and drank to refuel for the next day, the Mongolians sang, as did the Scotts and the English and we traded songs. At night it dropped to -50c and even inside our Yurts with the wood burner going, we believe it was around -20c and a very long uncomfortable night. On the second night, a nomadic Shaman visited from the mountains to bless our journey. We watched in awe as she went on a spiritual trip in front of us, speaking intongues, howling, growling and spinning so frantically she fell into the fire. It was so surreal being in this place, in this situation and environment, an experience to treasure. The final day was around 35 miles, a long tough slog across such varied terrain on very tired legs. I couldn’t believe how many variations of ice there could be on one lake. It freezes, flat, rippled, as waves, snow-covered and even in large jellyfish shapes, it was amazing. The rest of the team followed in over

Alison told me – “We have recently doubled the size of the team in an effort to expand the service and encourage more ladies to come and see us. It's a relaxed friendly atmosphere. We have women such as mothers who've just had a child and want to return to work with a 'new wardrobe' to ladies who are looking for that special outfit for a party.” During my visit I explained

I'm also only 5’3” and pale skinned, so brighter colours suit my skin tone. Alison then guided me around the store to look at brands such as All Saints, Ted Baker, French Connection and Coast. We picked out the three outfits you see here. Bright colours to suit my skin tone and loosely fitting over those problem areas. And it's not just clothes! We had a look at shoes to match the outfit and handbags and statement jewellery to make sure the look was complete. In all we selected three outfits for different occasions – a casual day out, a day in the office and a glam night out. In my opinion I had an excellent service from Alison who was friendly and made me feel at ease. I think this is a great confidence boost for any mum – or woman who’s lost track of what to wear – and would make a real treat for Mother’s Day. The Fayre Spot Bar & Restaurant at The Cresset in Peterborough recently reopened after a £250k refurbishment, and it’s looking great!

he Fayre Spot opened in 1993 at The Cresset, and has served as a popular community pub ever since, as well as offering a full menu catering for breakfast, coffee, lunch and pre-show meals for theatregoers at the Bretton venue. The refurbishment now offers more seating, an increased dining capacity, plenty of space for pool and darts, and two screens

for those all important sporting occasions. Disabled access has also been improved, with the new open plan layout, and the new design offers a warm and welcoming feel for all customers. Opening day on February 10 saw locals enjoying the football and rugby over drinks and meals during the day, and some fantastic live music from Citizen Smith on Saturday night to kick off proceedings in style. Our ESP Paparazzi photographer Emma Bothamley was there to capture all the action and we have to say the place looks classy and cosy. Plans are now underway to develop new menus, as well as adding more live music, theme nights and some special events for the forthcoming World Cup. The Fayre Spot in Bretton has reopened after a complete revamp and ESP’s Paparazzi popped down to check out the changes on the opening night. THE BUSINESS EVENT THAT TOOK THE BISCUIT

The Peterborough Biscuit business event proved a huge success as it returned for the second year running with numbers dramatically up on last year and a fresh format.

Meeting up with other business people took on a whole new look and feel with this big networking day at the East of England Arena proving it can be enjoyable ‘talking shop’. The event’s the brainchild of Stephen and Sharon Smith of Sphere Risk, Health & Safety Management to raise the proﬁle of local companies and help each other connect.

“The business to business networking scene in the city was pretty stale,” said Stephen. “It was always the same people, and I wanted to break down the barriers and have a fun, lively event that wasn’t cost prohibitive – the whole thing was about doing more business locally, because there are some brilliant small businesses here. We’ve had some really great feedback on the event.”

The organising team headed up by Edward Smith and Lorna Holland created a fun and lively day which included entertainment, a mascot race and over 250 exhibitors. Surely you’ve heard of the international superstar, Shakira? Her 11th studio album, El Dorado, was released in May last year and reached #1 on iTunes in 37 countries, with the worldwide hits La Bicicleta, Chantaje, Me Enamoré, and Déjà vu helping Shakira to become YouTube’s most-streamed female artist of 2017 – with the video for Chantaje alone having more than 2 billion views!

She doesn’t like her ears. Therefore, she does not like her hair up and often tries to cover them while her hair is arranged in ponytails. Yep, even someone as stunning as Shakira has insecurities.

Speaking to ESP the morning after the night before David described the evening as - “Pretty epic!” He told us – “People dream of being in this position, just to be nominated is a huge honour but to win was just amazing, especially as Gary won for best actor as well.” Gary Oldman had to undergo hours in the make-up chair in order to become Churchill and David said he enjoyed working with him. “He was so respectful of what we did, but the film was a massive

David is no in LA for the film awards season, which has also seen him nominated for several awards including a prestigious Oscar. His parents Paul and Christine still live in Peterborough, but while David and his wife Elizabeth were at the BAFTAS his parents drove down to David’s home in Aylesbury to look after his two pet cats! “They went to our local pub to watch the BAFTAS on television with all our friends and I spoke to them afterwards and they’d all been celebrating with champagne,” David told us. David began his career working as a make-up trainee after leaving Stamford College. His first credited role was on the set of ITV’s London’s Burning and the scenes of a huge train fire filmed at the Nene Valley Railway in 1997. (His Mum Christine was also involved as an extra). Since then he’s gone on to run his own special effects make-up company and amongst his many credits are Ready Player One, X – Men First Class and The Revenant. theatre in the family We meet three generations of one family who are working alongside each other on Peterborough Operatic and Dramatic Society’s latest show, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels… Lucille and Amanda both auditioned for PODS together in 2015 to be part of their smash-hit show Hairspray. “Mum and I had both just relocated to Peterborough when we went to see PODS do The Addams Family and thought the production was really slick,” says Amanda. “It had been a while since I’d been part of a theatre company and I knew mum missed being part of the am dram circuit so we thought, why not? Luckily we both got in and it’s been a major part of our lives ever since.” Mum and daughter so loved being part of Hairspray, which later scooped a prestigious NODA award for best musical in the region, Lucille and Amanda couldn’t wait to return to the company again for their 2017 show 9 to 5. But this time with the extra addition of Amanda’s son Charlie. “I went to see Hairspray and thought it was amazing so started attending a few PODS social events with mum,” says Charlie, a student at New College, Stamford. “I loved the friendly atmosphere and community so decided to audition and it’s the best decision I made.” Amanda, Charlie and Lucille

ll theatre actors know that putting on a show means the whole cast and crew pulling together like one big family. But for Peterborough Operatic and Dramatic Society (PODS) three of their members are actually related! Charlie Haynes, 17, mum Amanda Villamayor and grandma – or ‘nanny’ as she’s known – Lucille Ash are all working together to put on the society’s latest musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, at The Key Theatre this month. Musical theatre is definitely in this family’s genes and it all started with Lucille who spent her career as a professional dancer in the late Sixties, doing cabaret in Portugal, Spain, the Middle East and Africa. This then passed onto Amanda who spent many years working in the West End on shows including Sweet Charity, The Witches of Eastwick and Bat Boy. She’s now a tutor for drama and singing school Little Voices in Peterborough as well as running three handmade businesses from home. 32 www.espmag.co.uk

Lucille, this year’s Wardrobe Lead This year all three generations are once more involved, this time for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the hilarious musical caper set in the French Riviera based on the hit 1988 film starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin. Here Amanda takes a lead role as Muriel, the extravagantly wealthy target of the swindling scoundrels, while Charlie joins an all singing all dancing ensemble, as well as helping out with photography for the society. Lucille, meanwhile, has this year

The cast of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels become Wardrobe Lead for the show meaning that for the past few months she’s been glued to her sewing machine creating the cast’s costumes, with Charlie often roped in as the mannequin – and accidental pin cushion – to test out her outfits. Lucille says “PODS is a great community and it’s always great being with likeminded people.” The whole family now can’t wait for curtain-up this month and the show has become a constant topic of conversation among the family. In fact, you’ll often find Amanda and Charlie practicing their harmonies while cooking a spag bol. Amanda says “I learned so much from my mum having spent a lot of time in the theatre with her as a child and I really hope that Charlie can now take something from performing with me – and not just the money from my purse for tea in the break! I treasure spending time like this with him and try not to embarrass him too much.” Charlie adds, “I feel privileged to be part of such an amazing, talented society and I love performing with my family, in fact I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is at The Key Theatre from March 20-24. Walk for Nadia Two Deeping women are set to walk almost 30 miles around Rutland Water to raise funds for their friend’s young daughter battling Leukaemia. Four year-old Nadia has been fighting the cancer since she was just 18 month’s old and needs daily trips to hospital. Single mum Ewa needs support and her friends Sam Mulligan and Catriona Forsyth have pledged to help raise funds for transport and to arrange some fun events for Nadia. They are walking almost 30 miles round Rutland Water and its peninsula on Saturday March 10 and will be setting off at 6.30am hopefully completing the challenge before it’s dark. Sam told ESP – “We’re walking to raise funds for transport support to enable Ewa to take Nadia on her daily trip to hospital and also to arrange some event days for Nadia to enjoy as she has spent nearly all her life lying in one hospital bed or another.

Time for a Spring Clean from about 4am in the morning it starts its clearing out action. Whilst the body’s cycles are ongoing to some extent during the day, there are times where each cycle is heightened and the morning is much more noticeably of elimination. Our body needs space to digest and assimilate foods and therefore naturally needs a time without it. Looking at nature and how animals eat, you don’t see them eating all the time, even if food is in front of them. They know when they’re full, they know what their body’s needs are, and one natural desire is a time of NO food and more rest.

Finally we can say spring is almost here. This is the month we naturally feel that shift in our energies from one of dormancy curled up on the sofa, to one of renewal and a need to get going! It’s the time we want to push forward with new plans and ideas as well as a natural inclination to cleanse ourselves and our surroundings.

Tuning into your body’s own needs and wisdom can be a little harder as we’ve learned to ignore our natural calling. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Right now your body may be saying – get me out of this job and fly me off to the beach where I can lay in a hammock all day and read, lap up the waves and the sunshine! It’s highly unlikely that many of us can do that right now, but what your body may be saying its needs are could be: • • • •

TUNE INTO YOUR FOOD NEEDS One need that I try to help people with is to tune into their food needs. Believe it or not most people eat because it’s said to be ‘time’ to eat or they mistake the call of hydration for hunger. For instance, are you one of many people who aren’t hungry in the morning and yet you eat because you’ve been told you need to eat? I hear this more often than someone saying they wake up starving hungry and ready for a big breakfast. The body works in cycles, the morning time is a natural elimination cycle and doesn’t always need a heavy breakfast poured in whilst it’s doing the fine job of eliminating its waste. Naturally we poop in the morning because the body’s been detoxifying during the night and

Fasting for 12 hours for us as adults is natural, and yet we habitually eat food all day and especially in front of the TV at night which we don’t need. Whether you wake up not ready for food or with a huge need for breakfast, getting into a daily habit of 12 hours of no food is something most of us can do when we’re in general good health, the good news is this includes sleep time so it’s not that difficult. If you’ve eaten your last meal/food at 7.30pm then by 7.30am you’ve completed 12 hours.

RESET YOUR DIGESTION Today, we’re surrounded by too much food, with too much variety and combinations. We’ve become so addicted to foods and eating that we’re literally eating ourselves sick. Or we dumb down our senses with too much food so we’re less creative, more irritable, sleepy and lack vitality. Spring time is a natural time for cleansing, so why not try the simple way to allow your body to eliminate fully and help reset your digestion in an easy, effective way. Try 12 hours a couple of times a week (or every day if you like), work it to the times that suit you. For instance you may eat your main (technically last meal) at 5-6pm so have a snack a little later in the evening say 78pm. Or you may eat your last meal by 7-8pm at night so stop any snacking after that and just enjoy herbal teas before bed. I tend to suggest 8pm is a good cut off time for snacking and eating, but you can continue with water or herbal teas. In health Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

Arm yourself against cervical cancer If your daughter’s due to have the HPV vaccination, at school, the whole process can appear quite daunting. However, knowing the facts about the vaccine and why it’s offered to young women across England can help reassure you and give you confidence in making that decision. Cervical cancer is still the leading cause of death in women aged under 35yrs in the UK - deaths which can be prevented with the HPV vaccination, combined with regular cervical screening.

If your daughter misses a vaccination, can she still have it? Yes. If your daughter missed any of her vaccinations you should speak to your nurse or doctor about making another appointment as soon as possible. It’s important to have two doses before the age of 15 years.

In order to protect women from developing cervical cancer the HPV vaccine is recommended for all girls from the age of 12 years up to their eighteenth birthday.

The vaccine There are many types of human papillomavirus. The HPV vaccine protects against the two types that cause most cases (over 70%) of cervical cancer. HPV vaccine is used in 84 countries including the USA, Australia, Canada, and most of Europe and more than 80 million people have received the vaccine worldwide.

You’re currently performing a massive run at the Soho Theatre in London. Now that bookings for The Elvis Dead have gone crazy, what are you doing to keep your throat muscles intact?

Performing on Sunday March 11 as part of the Key Theatre’s comedy festival, this month I had a catch-up with the multi-award winning comedian Rob Kemp, creator of cult Edinburgh hit The Elvis Dead and most recently awarded Best Performer at the Comedians’ Choice awards:

Firstly, many thanks for taking the time out to have a chat – I think your Peterborough performance will be my third time seeing your show, but how would you describe The Elvis Dead to those who’ve never seen the show before?

“A musical retelling of Evil Dead 2 via the songs of Elvis Presley, with props and video-backing. A weirdly successful folly. A private joke that went too far. A love letter to two things I am into thanks to my Dad.”

Is a love of Elvis songs/Bruce Campbell a must for enjoying the show? “I am told that it really isn't. In fact, I have it on good authority that a member of the Leicester Comedy Festival Awards panel disliked horror movies and was not a fan of Elvis, yet still came away a fan of the show. That said, if you DO love one or both, you may enjoy it slightly more. (As an aside; if you don't like horror movies and are concerned about gruesome content, let me assure you, it is pretty much a PG).” You had a lot of celebrities attending your show last year, including Dara O’Briain and Ed Byrne. Who made you the most starstruck? “Given that spotting Dara O'Briain's face loom out of the darkness made me lose my place and forget a lyric, I would probably say he gets that 'honour'. He paid me a great compliment on the night after the show, he told me that he once got so involved in an IMAX film that he didn't eat his sweets. He then proceeded to pull an unopened packet of crisps from his pocket – better than crisps, what an achievement! I often wonder if he ever ate those crisps...”

You once said your next show would be a mixture of Carpenters’ classics and the plot of The Thing (as directed by John Carpenter, of course) – is this still a possibility or have you had any other ideas for the Fringe this year? “I still might do that at some point. I make for a striking Karen Carpenter and The Thing is one of my favourite films. I have a silly time-travel idea, and a sort of Twilight Zone thing, and I fancy having a go at being in a sketch duo. Maybe something personal someday, and possibly, eventually a follow-up/companion piece for The Elvis Dead. I just need to flesh some of them out now. At the football club, we are always striving for innovative ideas for our fan base and I know that everything we do is not always universally welcomed or applauded, but nothing in this world is perfection – poor old KFC ran out of chicken in February – I think we can all agree that’s one thing that is necessary for such a restaurant.

owever, while the colonel was handling dissatisfaction at the lack of ‘finger licking chicken’, here at the ABAX Stadium we were preparing to put season tickets on sale for the 2018-2019 campaign. We haven’t put prices up and in the first couple of weeks of sale, there was a big discount to be had and we were pleased with the response of our supporters.

At the time of writing, we’re still very much in the mix for the play-offs and that is what we need to do over the next few weeks, stay in that mix. Of course, fortunes on the pitch do have a big say in things off it, but we can also affect things on the pitch, off it, if you see where I’m attempting to come from. On the last Wednesday of every month, starting on Wednesday March 28, we’re holding an event exclusively for senior citizens. This is something that I’ve been personally working on and I really hope it will be a success.

A lot of senior citizens seek company, they seek conversation with like-minded people and often they’re just happy to be out of the regularity of their homelife. So we’ve come up with a concept where senior citizens can come to the Posh Venue between 12pm and 2pm on the last Wednesday of each month and listen to a former Peterborough United player talk about his career, back in the ‘good old days’. Peter McNamee and Roy Banham, two players from the late 1950s and 60s will be chatting candidly about their time on and off the pitch on the day and we hope that those memories can trigger other recollections from that era for those present. It will be a good chance to talk about the wonderful decade of the 60s for those supporters and chat in a relaxed environment. The event is free to attend and with free parking and a bus stop in the vicinity, we hope that it will be something that can

prove popular. We have a very loyal fan base at this football club and a lot of our demographic is the older generation and sometimes they can be left behind in this world of multimedia, ever-changing technology and Ant and Dec ruling the roost.

I love to see new bands locally, and so I was very pleased to experience a gig from Carpark Rendezvous. They’re a 5 piece outfit consisting of Danny Dill on vocals, Martin Humphrey on lead guitar, Toby Eldred bass, Robbie Beckwith on rhythm guitar and Will Wells on drums. They perform some great harmony numbers and have a wide range of classics on their set list. They covered Temptations, Green Day and Killers hits and showed real versatility that would see them fit into weddings, corporate events and festivals as well as pub gigs (which is where I saw them). They were formed in February 2016 and I asked how the band came about. Lead singer Danny Dill told me – “I was an assistant manager at The Sugarmill in Bourne and had been serving Martin and his family at the restaurant for over a year. After all that time, it was by chance that I carried their food out one evening and Martin clocked a treble clef tattoo on my finger and asked ‘what's the significance of that tattoo?’ to which I replied ‘I'm a singer’. He said he was a guitarist and as we both had nothing going on we agreed to meet the following week to get together for a jam and the rest they say is history. We advertised for a bass player and a drummer and carried on as a 48 www.espmag.co.uk

four piece for a while adding keys later on. Danny continued – “As life does, it tends to get in the way for some people so within our first year we had people come and go and replaced the bassist and drummer, then keys went and we replaced with Robbie (rhythm guitarist), our newest member Will Wells (drummer) has just joined us and life is good.” So where did the band name come from? “It was from that first jamming session,” Danny explains. “Martin asked to meet me for a first rehearsal and would pick me up from the Co-op car park in Bourne. When he pulled in I was stood under a street light in the middle of the car park and the rendezvous point in the car park was spoken about again and again until the name stuck.” It’s always difficult for new bands to establish themselves on a busy local circuit so how has it gone in two years? “We approached no less than 40 venues on the local circuit and got some hits back for bookings but progress was slow, we

rehearsed once a week and kept plugging away for bookings. Then we had our break in the first year in the Peterborough circuit by playing at Charters and soon after that the bookings came flooding in.” They now have bookings up to January 2019 including festival and wedding bookings. They even had the opportunity to play for a couple of Stamford school events last summer. The band play a little bit of everything and are adding new songs monthly to keep the crowds guessing, and they have a varied range of music influences from Elvis, The Beatles to Oasis and the Arctic Monkeys. “We have a varied set list with almost 50 songs under our belt so the venue and event will depict what we pull out the bag. We also get a feel of what's motivating our audience so will chop and change genre to cater for them.” They’re also working on a catalogue of originals they’ve written and are looking to get into the studio this year and get some work recorded and mastered. As they told me life is good for Carpark Rendezvous and it shows in their performance. Danny told me; “We have the best time on stage and although we're serious about the performance are always clowning around and enjoying what we do. The band is the strongest it's ever been now and our bookings just reinforce our confidence and belief in the band.” You can check out the band on March 24 at the Prince of Wales Feathers in Castor, on March 31 at Ebeneezers in Woodston and they are at the Golden Fleece in Stamford on April 14. It’s 50 years since Led Zeppelin were formed, although they didn’t really hit the headlines until a few years later in the early Seventies to become the trailblazers of heavy rock. They achieved their popularity by playing great live gigs and by producing real rock classics. The band are no more so how about marking their anniversary by watching one of the top Zeppelin tributes at The Stamford Corn Exchange on Friday March 9? Throughout 2018 Whole Lotta Led will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the birth of Led Zeppelin with a show that’ll include songs from all of their studio albums, ranging from their beautiful acoustic songs to the huge anthems we’ve come to know and love.

Now in their 22nd year, Whole Lotta Led claim they’re widely regarded as the closest to the original that you’ll ever hear with their five piece line-up reproducing the songs as near to the album versions as possible. The Motor City Vipers revisit The Brewery Tap on Saturday April 7 as part of the Randall Rootz fundraisers. I’ve been to some of their previous gigs at the Tap and once again the night is to raise awareness of Sue Ryder Hospice and to raise badly needed funds to support the invaluable work they do at Thorpe Hall. MCV love playing at the Tap because the atmosphere is always electric. Vipers frontman, Andy Whittaker told me – “We’re looking forward to yet another top night of soulful shenanigans and hope it will be another sell-out for this great cause. It’s quite possible that we will exceed the £15,000 mark this year, so we’re really excited about supporting this event again this year!” The 8 piece MCV were formed in the spring of 2009 and have gained themselves a reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting live soul bands – playing a vibrant set of Motown and Northern Soul classics, The Vipers’ repertoire is like a who’s who of soulful floor-fillers from the 60s and 70s – from The Temptations, Wilson Pickett, The Four Tops and Dobie Gray, to The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and Otis Redding. Peterborough’s always loved a soul gig and it looks like soul legends also love the ‘Boro! USA legends Shalamar played here last year for the first time and have now decided to round off their tour right here in the city. Shalamar featuring Howard Hewett, Jeffrey Daniel and Carolyn Griffey are celebrating the 35th anniversary of the multi-million selling Friends album, Shalamar’s Jeffrey Daniel said – “We were knocked out by the reception the crowd gave us. It was as if they’d been waiting 34 years for us to come! So we said to our tour agent that we had to visit the city again on the Friends tour!” Tickets are now on sale for the band’s gig at The Broadway Theatre for the very last night of the

There’s a treat in store for hardcore rock fans at Mama Liz’s in Stamford. The Amsterdam Red-Light District are doing a one week tour of the UK prior to an extensive European tour and they’re starting in Stamford on Saturday March 3. The French 4 piece hardcore band bring high energy and an explosive performance to all their gigs and have been together since 2005 during which time they’ve toured extensively and released very successful albums. I see that Promoter Peter Haywood has organised another charity day in aid of Oppo2Oppo on Sunday March 11. This is a charity that was formed to help Armed Forces veterans affected by their experiences serving this country in conflicts. The cause is often neglected and it deserves our support. Six months ago, a similar day proved very successful and raised important funds at The Crown Inn on Lincoln Road, New England. The same venue plays host to a great bill of music starting at 4pm through to 11pm.
