M.A.D. EASTER ART EXHIBITION

University Centre Peterborough have changed how long it will take to complete a degree when studying part-time.   It’s in response to student and employer demands to achieve degrees quicker. If you were unable to study a degree full-time due to work, family or personal commitments, it usually meant 6 years of study before you achieved the dream of graduating (compared to 3 years when studying fulltime). With demands from both students and local employers, University Centre Peterborough have changed the way in which part-time students study their degree when starting a course from September 2019. This has meant that the majority of degrees can now be completed after 4 years of study through enhanced timetabling.

only person who fell in love with all things magical that day. I’m still a fan to this day and therefore can’t wait for WizCon to come to Peterborough on Sunday March 24. The event will be packed full of witchcraft and wizardry, featuring Meet and Greet opportunities with some of the actors in the Harry Potter films - including Josh Herdman (Gregory Goyle) and Chris Rankin (Percy Weasley). There will also be an exciting popup escape room from Hour Escape Rooms, a

Wand Fighting Masterclass, a wide range of magical merchandise and much more. I have attended similar events before such as Peterborough’s Comic Con and Feel the Force Day. My favourite thing about them is seeing the fans go through such incredible effort in creating costumes. It’s great to see organisers are encouraging people to go all out with WizCon too. As part of the fun stage content, there will be a Cosplay Contest. So if you’re a fan of the wizarding world, get creative and go dressed as your favourite character from the films to be in with the chance of winning a fantastic prize! It’s great to see amazing events like this taking place in our city and I feel it’s just the start. Of course, these things can only continue and grow with our support. I will of course be in attendance (I wouldn’t miss it for the world!) and I hope to see you there. General admission is £16.50, with half day tickets £11.50 and other offers available for Meet & Greets. Everything mentioned above is just the tip of the iceberg. For full details on the event (including a list of other famous attendees), visit www.wiz-con.co.uk. Mikey Clarke

FEEL THE FORCE DAY GROWS STRONGER Here’s the heads up that another fantastic fan convention in the city is doing so well it’s moving to a new site. Feel The Force Day, the only fully accessible comic and fan event in the world, is moving to the East of England Arena and Events Centre. This year’s event will be the seventh one and it’s being held on October 5 having grown from just a small event in Peterborough in 2013 to one that now attracts around 8000 visitors from all over the country and abroad.

www.espmag.co.uk 88 www.espmag.co.uk

Simon Howard, co-founder and organiser of Feel The Force Day says - "It's based on an understanding that the mainstream fan conventions don't necessarily provide a great environment for fans with disabilities, whether it's practical issues like having extra wide aisles, or less visible features like a calm, softly lit 'chill-out' area. Our event is all about understanding, in every respect. "We have all the same attractions as a typical fan convention, but with a fully supportive environment and atmosphere built-in to the event. We rely on our venue, volunteers, celebrity guests and merchandise sellers all working together to make the event accessible, inclusive and enjoyable for every visitor. From keeping a low average price for tickets and merchandise, to providing tactile as well as visual browsing opportunities, true accessibility means so much more than wheelchair ramps and lifts." Tickets sell fast for this one and are available at www.feeltheforceday.com.

TIME TO GET YOUR TEENAGERS FIRED UP ABOUT THEIR CAREER OPTIONS You know that awkward conversation you have to have with the kids... no not the one about the birds and the bees – the one about what to do when they leave school!

I

n the midst of a hectic social media social life, YouTube videos, and selfies you might struggle to get a word in with your teenagers but when it comes to ‘the talk’ about careers and further education you need to be on the ball about the options. So let’s consider the choice of racking up a big student debt at uni vs having the chance to earn while they learn on an Apprenticeship.

It’s time to ditch any old preconceptions of Apprenticeships and get savvy and fired up about what they’re really all about today...

It’s time to ditch any old preconceptions of Apprenticeships and get savvy and fired up about what they’re really all about today – and it isn’t about being an easy option! Entry requirements differ depending on the Apprenticeship, but as a guide most Apprenticeships require 4 GCSEs at grades A to C, including English and Maths. There’s no way they can slack off at school and think that an Apprenticeship will be an

10 www.espmag.co.uk

alternative – they have to make the grades to get accepted and prove to be committed, reliable and motivated! It’s all about raising aspirations – today’s Apprenticeships are a career goal, a genuine alternative to university and are available to anyone aged 16 and above (there’s no upper age limit). An Apprenticeship is a form of on the job training that will enable your son or daughter to gain a nationally recognised qualification whilst earning a wage and all the associated benefits of being an employee. Most of the training is delivered by the employer, with some elements delivered by Peterborough Regional College. Look at it like this – as an Apprentice they’ll be learning on the job skills which are valued by employers and earning a salary, so no more bothering the bank of mum and dad! An Apprenticeship can represent a debt free route into learning and a career (starting salary is £3.90 p/h, rising to the living wage). If you think they don’t lead to a decent job there’s no guarantee a degree from uni will make them the next Alan Sugar… but you can rest easy when the stat’s show that 90% of apprentices are in employment after completion of their Apprenticeship, plus they have increased future earning potential.

MYTHS • You can’t go to university with an apprenticeship – Yes you can • You don’t get a job afterwards – 83% of apprentices stay with their employer • Employers only want cheap labour and apprentices get the rubbish jobs – Nope. Apprentices receive specialist training and work towards nationally recognised qualifications and receive all the benefits of being an employee The recruitment fair on Thursday March 7 at Peterborough Regional College is a great opportunity to find out what Apprenticeships are really all about. To find out more just steer your son or daughter to the Apprenticeship Academy at Peterborough Regional College on 01733 762121 or get them to email apprenticeships@peterborough.ac.uk or they can apply for as many roles as they like on www.peterborough.ac.uk/ apprenticeships/apprenticeshipvacancies.

This year the festival, organised by Peterborough Trades Union Council, will span three weeks, with plays, meetings, campaigns and music. Various events will showcase the skills and impact of Peterborough’s women including the play Votes For Women by the Rebellious Sisterhood theatre group at the John Clare Theatre on Friday March 1, and then Eastern Angles present Rouse Ye Women, a folk ballard about Mary Macarthur and the Women Chainmakers who went on strike in 1910, at the Undercroft in Hampton on Monday March 4. The main event takes place at the Town Hall on Saturday March 9, the day after International Women’s Day, when campaigners come together to showcase the work being done to fight for women’s equality. As well as numerous campaign stalls there will be a poetry corner featuring young poets’ work on the subject of feminism, the Bolly Soul dance troupe and food by Resist! Vegan Kitchen. Speakers on the day will include Soarcha Tweedale on transgender rights and the Red Box Project will be asking for donations to fund their campaign for girls to be able to access free sanitary products in schools. The evening will see Eclectic Ballroom take over the Lightbox Café on Bridge Street, with a

special all women artist DJ set, Disco Divas. The festival closes on Thursday March 14 with the screening of a short film at Chauffeur’s Cottage, all made as part of the Cine-Sisters project which has helped women in and around Millfield become filmmakers. BED It’s National Bed Month (The Sleep Council) and it’s got me thinking about what our beds go through: Hob Nob crumb collector, bug breeding ground, sweat evaporator, wind (smell) breaker, Tinder date tester, monster hider, drool capturer, stain collector, wall (headboard) marker, TV lounger, covers tug-of-war divider and spooning / dead arm maker. God bless our beds.

Music to our Ears for 4o Years It was once said that Muhammad Ali was the most recognised person in the world. The same can be said (yours truly aside) of Eddie Nash but I’m referring to Peterborough rather than the world of course.

C

learly, I’m not comparing Eddie with The Greatest but then again, apart from only having their height in common, maybe Eddie too is The Greatest Peterborough DJ I mean. This month (March 30) Eddie will be embarking on a 12-hour DJ set at The Brewery Tap in aid of Cancer Research. His younger brother Johnnie died last year of lung cancer and Eddie will be dedicating his set to him, his family and friends who rallied round in support during a difficult time. And later this year on September 13 Eddie will be hosting a BrownSuga Reunion night to coincide with him celebrating 40 years of DJing. It’s no wonder Eddie is the most recognised person on the city centre night scene. He’s known to two generations of revellers and has consistently been playing in venues longer than anyone else. In fact, when I think of three names that sum up the city’s night scene over the years

CIAOS OUT: 14 www.espmag.co.uk

it’s Len Boone, Rinaldo Fasulo and Eddie Nash. I’ve known Eddie for 29 years but he remembers me even further back when I used to collect the entry fee for my family-run club Viva-La-Rock when I was 13 years old. Eddie’s golden smile and friendly personality are his trademark and so is his taste in music. But it’s not just what he played, it’s when he chose to play a certain song that always leaves me with long-lasting memories. I always remember Quo Vadis in particular. Eddie always picked a timeless classic to play at the end of the night when the lights went up and it was time to queue for the cloakroom. September by Earth Wind

and Fire and Love Rears Its Ugly Head by Living Colour stand out the most for me. I caught up with ‘The Greatest’ for a chat about back in the day...

Cars are Second to the One Research by CarNext.com has revealed that cars rank a slim second only to our partners in importance to everyday life. This is quite startling. But then again I can see why it was a close call between the two, especially if the poll was done with men. Some psychology theories argue our cars are an extension of our manhood and that they provide us with a degree of comfort and, let’s say, contentment, like our gentlemen’s sausage does. And you can see why cars

(72%) very nearly came up on top over our partners (74%). Most men need to fancy the car they purchase. She (they’re always a she) has to have long lasting sex appeal with curves on her bodywork that won’t change shape over time and an engine that isn’t going to blow a gasket when occasionally you ask a little extra from it.

But what you don’t get from your car is engaging conversation, intimacy (although I’ve seen some weird videos…) and someone to go garden centre browsing on Sunday afternoons with. That’s why the woman in our life is most important, eh guys…?

Anyway, here’s a typical woman’s wish list and how I measure up.

Tell me how you started out on the decks? “I was 13 and it was at Focus Youth Club September 1979 - I was paid £6, which is about £20 in today’s money. The first track I played was Wade In The Water by Ramsey Lewis. I still play it today at The Brewery Tap!” What three venues did you, and do you still most like to play in? “I’d have to say L’Aristo's because of Shujah Saklain the Lighting Jock and when Maxi Priest appeared with UK Apache. Quo Vadis was special because manager Peter Bell inspired me to invent Theodore SupaFly and of course BrownSuga was my baby. The Red Room was something I started too and I had one of my best New Year’s Eve’s there. I know you said three but I also want to say The Brewery Tap because of the staff, I just love them.” What about three records that for you sum up those three venues? “At L’Aristo's it has to be Dawn Penn, No, No, No. Quo Vadis always reminds me of playing You Don’t Know Me by Armand Van Heldan and at the Red Room it’s A$AP Rocky - Wild For The Night.”

So, what are your highlights of ESP in the last 20 years? “First of all I have to say meeting you and the editor, Sharon, was a blessing. Not only have you both a passion for Peterborough but you both taught me a lot about writing and how to accentuate what I wanted to get across in an engaging way. “There’s so much the magazine has supported and pioneered down the years that it’s hard to pick one moment out. But, the Paparazzi spread was genius. I remember seeing you out with a camera, which back in the day people just wouldn’t contemplate carrying around. When you walked into a bar people went crazy to be photographed and you had to wait until the next issue to see if your photo was included. It was and still is the page people turn to first, after Man About Town of course Pep. “I also remember you interviewing Girls Aloud and your story of giving Sarah Harding your phone number! Then there was the Face of ESP and the buzz that always generated.”

And three records that define you and Peterborough's night scene? “You can’t ever mention the nightlife in Peterborough without a reference to Love Won't Be Denied by Len Boone being made. The other two tracks that spring to mind are No Diggity by Blackstreet and Waiting All Night by Rudimental.” Who would you say was the best club manager or owner? “Rinaldo Fasulo and Peter Bell. But my biggest reason and influence for DJing has to be Steve Allen and his record shop Discoasis. He got me started along with Trevor McPherson, who won the EMI World Disco Dancing Championships at The Cresset which was hosted by S&M Entertainments.”

CAUGHT IN

THE ACT! “Our Mikey recent take some explainily became a dad... this’ll ng when his little boy grows up!”

“ I’d say the best years were from 1986 to 2005 where you had nights like Shindig with Steve Allen, Bubble with Marc Jameson and BrownSuga. You have to remember it was before social media, so going out at weekends was practically the only way you’d catch up with one another and the gossip. There’s nothing wrong with today’s weekend scene, it’s just different, much like the rest of the country is with less nightclubs than there once was.” What motivates you to keep DJing? “I guess I love what I do even though I still get nervous the day before a set. I also enjoy reminding people of the music they love and with the younger audiences, I get a buzz introducing them to some amazing original music that is sampled in today’s tracks.”

It’s no wonder Eddie is the most recognised person on the city centre night scene.

If I say ‘Love Rears Its Ugly Head’, what do you think of? “Wow, you remembered... It’s my favourite track of all time. It got me through some bad times and good times. The lyrics mean a lot to me. You always remind me that I sometimes played it at the end of the night when it was time to go home.”

Music has obviously changed in the last 20 years but how different is the vibe in town? “It’s very different. Back then we had four nightclubs open at one time and they each held around 1,000 people, we were spoilt really but very lucky too. There was a special atmosphere that’s hard to describe unless you were part of it, we were like one big family.

And what are you typically playing today? “It really varies to where I’m playing. When I’m doing sets abroad it’s all about the current vibe but if I’m doing a wedding it’s because the bride and groom trust me and I play on instinct. Some of the tracks I’m currently playing no matter where I am are: Chaka Khan - Like Sugar, Lyn Collins - Think, Jocelyn Brown Somebody Else's Guy and Toot And The Maytals - 54-46 Was My Number.”

We love to see new events coming to the city and to see more on offer so when Peterborough Pride was launched in the city last year, ESP was proud to support the first festival.

Peterborough Pride organiser Simon Green

P

eterborough Pride is coming back, bigger and better this summer, and once again we’ll be partnering up to promote all the good stuff lined up. The team have just launched a crowd funding page to help support this year’s plans and we caught up with organiser Simon Green to find out what’s in store and how you can get involved. “Peterborough Pride 2019 will be a weeklong festival full of fun frolics, performance and celebration from June 28 – July 5. It will be a city-wide event happening at various locations

across the city, and the programme is currently in development - it's already looking really exciting as there's something for everyone!” The team form Peterborough Pride are really keen to have your input so now’s the time to have your say and get involved. “People can support Peterborough Pride by following our social media channels, by contacting the details below should you have any ideas as to what could be included, but most importantly by spreading the word and coming out and party with us! “We also need the funding to do all that we want to do, and we therefore ask everyone to donate anything they can, and to encourage others to do the same. Details of our crowdfunding page will be announced on our social media channels. “We're looking to build on everything that was successful last year. But with funding and support, we want to have more of an impact and reach a larger number of people.” Although Peterborough Pride will be a big party, it’s also about promoting understanding and awareness in the city and Simon believes there’s still much more work to be done. “Despite plenty of progress gathering support from across the city, there are still too

many incidents of LGBT people becoming victims of abuse, discrimination and harassment. This year we are particularly mindful of the transgender community and we want to stand in solidarity with our transgender family and friends. “The legacy of Peterborough Pride in 2018 is already well established - the positive feedback and the interest in this year's event is a testimony to all that everyone contributed and achieved last year. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved and everyone that came out to party, last year. After all it's 'Your Peterborough, Your Pride!'” We will keep you posted on all things Pride over the coming months, but follow their social media channels for more. Why are you so determined to save the store in Peterborough? “Firstly - HMV is a unique store in the heart of the Queensgate Centre, and in the city centre more generally - I don’t think many people like the idea of living in a city without a record store of some description in its centre. As a big music fan I feel passionately about this - a physical store is crucial to discovering music, even in the current climate of streaming & downloading music. “We’re a really passionate bunch, with interests across music, TV & film and we love sharing this passion with customers, recommending them products for instance. A lot of my colleagues have been working for the company for several years, a couple for more than 20 and this level of experience can’t be replicated by the online retailers. For us it’s not just a job, we’re like a family.” Can you really compete with online sales? “Yes. In terms of prices, as a company HMV is often competitively priced in regards to the likes of Amazon, despite a climate of increasing rents and business rates that high street stores face. In 16 www.espmag.co.uk

terms of digital sales, there are certainly still plenty of customers who want the physical product, seen particularly with the resurgence of vinyl in recent years - this is an area which the new owner Doug Putman specifically wants to expand within the stores. He also wants to give more autonomy to store managers, meaning that they will be able to stock more of the items which their local customers want and to make each HMV shopping experience more unique.” Megan Seekings and manager Kathryn Jeffs How much support is there locally and how do you hope to save the Peterborough store? “Since an article emerged in The Guardian stating that the new owner wanted to keep as many stores open as possible, we’ve seen five stores across the country reopen. It inspired us to set up an online campaign to try and show how much love there is for our store. “We’ve been using Twitter (#SaveHMVPeterborough and @savehmvpboro) where we’ve received support from the likes of Neil Gaiman, The Hoosiers, Public Service Broadcasting and Transgressive Records, as well as a number of the other HMV stores. On Facebook we’ve set up the ‘Help Save HMV

Peterborough!’ group which gained nearly 700 members in just over a week, and we’ve set up a petition which received over 1100 signatures in five days. The continued support we’ve received from customers and those further afield has been incredible, as well as from those higher up in both HMV and Sunrise Records.” What would you like local people to do to help you? “To help the campaign, locals can continue to support all of the online outlets mentioned above, as well as being in touch with Queensgate to tell them how much the store meant to them.”

Photo: Stuart Scally

Here’s your chance to show some people power. If you were sad to hear that the HMV store in Queensgate was one of those closed recently, there’s a campaign to try and get the city music shop reopened. Former sales assistant Megan Seekings and her colleagues have launched their own campaign to bring back HMV in the city. ESP caught up with Megan to find out more…

It’s been around a month since Darren Ferguson took charge of Peterborough United for the third time, agreeing a deal until the end of the campaign. Hopefully, he and assistant Gavin Strachan can inspire the players to reach the playoffs in League One – it’s certainly going to be a rollercoaster ride between now and May.

O

f course, for those that are unaware, Darren has been in charge during two successful spells at the ABAX Stadium and has lived close to Stamford for almost 12 years. Everybody knows he has a strong affinity for the football club, but he is also very settled in the area. Speaking to ESP, Darren explained why this area has been so good for his family. “Obviously, I have a really good affinity with the football club and sometimes it just fits. Hopefully that can happen again and we can have a really strong end of the season. I will work as hard as I can to try and get this club into the play-offs but we know there will be twists and turns along the way.

“I have lived in this area for 12 years now, give or take one year when I took over at Preston North End. My wife and me just really liked the area when we moved in. There are good schools and I can’t see us moving away from that area now. It is a really nice place to live, the kids love it and we are really settled. “I have a couple of dogs and there are great

places to walk the dog. We go to Rutland Water and Burghley and it is fantastic. I think sometimes you just know that you are going to stay in a place for most of your life and as I say, I can’t see us moving now.” I have to say on a personal level, it is great that Darren is back in charge. As press officer you get to work with a lot of coaches and managers and I have probably worked with nearly 20 during my time at the football club. I like to think I know how Darren operates and that’s really important when building relationships. Darren also brought in his wonderful Labrador Max (who we met in his earlier spells in charge) and as a potential dog owner in the future, it was great to see him. It got me thinking about pets. You often see dogs wearing all kinds of outfits, but do any ESP readers dress up their animals in Posh colours? If so drop an email to me at phil@theposh.com and we will feature them in next month’s column! Enjoy the month!

BARS IN THE BORO This month our Paparazzi photographer Mike Harris was out an about in town on a bit of a bar crawl! Things kicked off with a trip to the ever popular bar on a boat, Charters on the river followed by a visit to Samm’s Bar on Bridge Street where Filthy Contact were playing - everyone loved them so much they had to do six encores! The Lightbox Café just along Bridge Street was also packed with its evening crowd enjoying the tunes from Eclectic Ballroom and then it was over to the Brewery Tap for the hugely successful L’Aristo’s Reunion gig which was heaving with club fans enjoying tunes from back in the day. Sophie Ellis-Bextor is back with some songs you’ll know but they won’t quite sound as you remember them!

C

atchy tunes like Murder on the Dancefloor feature on her new album, The Song Diaries, which is released on March 15 – a greatest hits album but with an orchestral makeover! Can you believe Sophie’s musical career has spanned 21 years now?! The mum of five boys has had six Top 10 singles and is now returning to her original disco roots on The Song Diaries, which features her biggest hits, but not as you’ve heard them before. Singles such as Murder On The Dancefloor and Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love), which was the most played record on UK radio between 2000 and 2010, have been re-worked with beautiful orchestral arrangements. Sophie’s classic hit Take Me Home was released from the album at the end of last year. It’s been re-recorded with a full orchestra and band and produced by Sophie’s long-term musical collaborator and friend Ed Harcourt and her husband Richard Jones (bassist with The Feeling), alongside additional production from David Arnold and mixing by Ash Howes. Take Me Home was Sophie’s debut solo release, taken from her debut studio album Read My Lips. Both the single and album reached No.2 on the single and albums chart respectively, with the album charting for 60 weeks and going Double Platinum and the single being certified Silver. Sophie says; “It has been glorious to bring disco technicolour to my orchestral version of Take me Home. Hopefully when you hear it, it’ll bring a little 70’s Paradise Garage your way. It’s all the bells and whistles!” Check out the new video for Take Me Home which was filmed in the studio, during the making of the album, and at Sophie’s live performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The Evening Standard described it as – ‘A joyous, exhilarating evening of reinvention and reminiscence’ and gave it a 4 star review. This orchestral greatest hits is Sophie’s seventh studio album and is the follow-up to her recent album Familia and previous record Wanderlust, both of which charted in the Top 10 and marked a change in musical direction for her. Production on the record comes from acclaimed singersongwriter Ed Harcourt, who also produced Familia and Wanderlust, with string arrangements from Amy Langley of Dirty Pretty Strings and additional production by David Arnold, renowned for his TV and film compositions, including five James Bond films. If you’re keen to see her live, Sophie will be taking The Song Diaries on the road this summer with nearby gigs at Cambridge Corn Exchange on June 2 and Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall on June 4 with a full orchestra and band, New dates have also just been released for November and tickets are on sale now. www.sophieellisbextor.net

CAPTAIN MARVEL

Released

MAR Cast: Brie Larson, Jude Law, Samuel L Jackson, Annette Bening Director: Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck One of the universe’s most powerful heroes looks like she’s going to play a pivotal role in the fourth instalment of The Avengers, Endgame – if the finale to Infinity War was anything to go by – but before that there was a mid-nineties-set origin story. Said story follows Carol Danvers (played by Oscar-winning Room actress Brie Larson), a former US Air Force fighter pilot, as she turns into one of the galaxy’s mightiest heroes after her DNA is fused with that of an alien race known as Kree during an accident – imbuing her with superhuman strength, energy projection and the ability to fly. She then joins an elite Kree military team known as Starforce – led by Jude Law’s mentor – to tackle Ben Mendelsohn’s (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) invading Skrull army leader Talos, as she gets caught up in the centre of a galactic conflict between two alien

worlds, while still harbouring questions about her past on Earth. Thrown in for good Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity measure is Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury and Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson – with both SHIELD members made to look younger by groundbreaking CGi technology – alongside Djimon Hounsou’s Korath and Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser, who starred in the original The Guardians of the Galaxy adventure. The first female-centric Marvel superhero film follows hot on the heels of DC's Wonder Woman - and is currently tracking to raise above the $103 million Stateside opening weekend box-office bar that the Amazonian warrior princess set two years ago. And if that prediction comes true, then the inaugural outing of the tagged saviour of The Avengers should end up being simply marvel-ous…

Highly-acclaimed Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele – who notched a Best Original Screenplay award for Get Out – brings his latest highly-anticipated horror project to the big screen.

US

In order to get away from their busy lives, the Wilson family – including mother Adelaide (12 Years a Slave Oscar-winner and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Lupita Nyong’o) and father Gabe (Nyong’o’s Black Panther co-star Winston Duke) – take a vacation to California’s Santa Cruz, with the plan of spending time with their friends, the Tylers.

But when four mysterious strangers break into Adelaide’s childhood home where they’re staying, the family are shocked to find that the ‘doppelganger’ intruders look and talk just like them – only with grotesque appearances.

It will be interesting to see if this new thriller from Peele lives up to the hype that Get Out achieved two years ago…

DUMBO

The latest classic Disney animation turned live-action tentpole, looks to continue the acclaimed work of recent hits such as Beauty and the Beast and The Jungle Book. Colin Farrell’s Holt Farrier was once a famous circus star, but after he returned from war Danny DeVito’s owner Max Medici realises the experience has terribly altered him, but still tasks him to take care of newborn elephant Dumbo, whose oversized ears have made him the laughing stock of the struggling circus troupe.

But when Holt’s children discover that Dumbo can fly, Michael Keaton’s silver-tongued entrepreneur VA Vandevere, and Eva Green’s (Casino Royale) aerial artist Colette Marchant swoop in to make the elephant a little star. Unfortunately not everything is the way it seems as Dumbo and his friends discover dark secrets beneath the shiny veneer of a new venture for the circus…

This sci-fi thriller, set in a Chicago neighbourhood nearly a decade after occupation from an extra-terrestrial force, explores the lives on both side of the conflict. With humanity enslaved under the guise of a peaceful unity, the story delves into the perspectives of both the collaborators and the dissidents – primarily following the lives of Police Officer Mulligan (John Goodman) and the son of a fallen soldier and new recruit Gabriel (Moonlight’s Ashton Sanders) – and involves intertwining themes such as an oppressive government, the public being lied to, and the aftermath as some rise up against the institution. Gabriel joins up with a rebel group called Phoenix as the situation begins to unravel in this movie from the director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rupert Wyatt. Bates Motel’s Vera Farmiga and rapper Machine Gun Kelly co-star in what could be the sleeper hit of the month…

METRO EXODUS (X1/PS4) This third instalment of the cult series smoothes out the rough edges of the first two games – to provide the best iteration of the Metro franchise yet. In 2010, the series showed so much potential with the ambitiously noteworthy (part Half-Life 2, part Resident Evil, part Dead Space to name a few) survival horror 2033, and only stabilised the formula with 2013’s Last Light – but Exodus has taken Metro thundering down the line in an emphatic fashion. Quite literally, as you board a heavily modified steam locomotive called the Aurora to embark on an incredible journey – again as the main protagonist Artyom – with a handful of survivors, to make it across the post-apocalyptic Soviet wastelands to try and find a new life in the East. Naysayers may have been worried that bringing the game out in the open a lot more would take away some of the atmospheric trademarks that fans love so much, but with an engrossing non-linear sandbox survival world experience – that isn’t the case. Everything from impressive day/night cycles and dynamic weather patterns are all factors that add elements to a gripping story in a hostile world. The Russian wilderness can be one scary place. It’s still not flawless with some pacing issues, intermittent clunkiness and mission inconsistencies that sporadically hinder the wider ambitions of this visually stunning game – but that’s nit-picking as Exodus does everything it can to not keep you away.

It’s hoped up to 47 more teams will challenge them on the water. ESP is proud to be the print media partner for the event once again with our team – the ESP Motley Crew – hoping to celebrate our 20 years in print in style… Maybe even with a win after some close times last year! year’s record-breaking festival, which raised more than £35,000 for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Entries are now open and you don’t need any experience – come on, do we look like we know what we’re doing?! The Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival has seen all sorts of teams take part from businesses to sports clubs, groups of mates and families celebrating special events though to charities and community organisations. If you’re celebrating a milestone why not put in a team to mark it and make it memorable?

If you’re celebrating a milestone why not put in a team to mark it and make it memorable?

The ESP crew love it and we always have a great time both on the water and enjoying laughs on the bankside in between races – it’s

great for team building and a bit of a social… and we’re always up for a bit of a social! Hannah Buckley, HR Generalist at IKEA, said: “We enjoyed taking part in last year’s event and working alongside the charity to fundraise for such a worthwhile cause. I am sure that this year’s event will surpass last year’s, and that is a credit to all those involved that put such hard work into ensuring this success. We look forward to seeing you all there.” There is a great incentive for teams to raise as much sponsorship as possible – the top fundraisers will win the prize of a group experience day at Orton Hall Hotel and Spa to include Buck’s Fizz on arrival, morning use of Imagine Spa’s facilities, lunch and an afternoon with locally based CJ’s Birds of Prey. To enter you’ll need up to 11 people in your team and each team will race a minimum of three times, the dragon boats and all equipment are provided. Local author releases city thriller Shadows of Regret Our city is oozing with talent. As part of the ESP team, I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to local Olympians, actors, singers, dancers and authors.

O

ne Peterborough author I’ve been chatting to recently is Ross Greenwood. He writes crime thrillers, and I’m hooked on his latest – Shadows of Regret. The gripping story focuses on a woman's struggle to rejoin society. Katie committed a terrible crime and sixteen years was the price she had to pay. Once released from prison, she finds the world has changed. But Katie is a survivor. Isolated and alone, she struggles to make sense of her new life. Starting again isn’t easy, especially after what she’s done. Gradually, memories of the past are revealed. When Katie finally exposes the awful truth and sees there are others who share the blame, she must choose her path. Will she seek redemption, or will she take revenge? It’s no surprise that Ross chose to set one of his books in a prison, given that he was a prison officer for a year. Four of his five books are set in Peterborough. During my chat with the local author, I wondered what local landmarks feature in his stories. “Loads of places,” he

34 www.espmag.co.uk

told me. “The Cathedral grounds, the Posh stadium, Bridge Street, Bretton, Paston. Local pubs even make it into my books – including Charters, The Swiss Cottage, The Botolph, O’Neill’s and College Arms. The Cavendish on Eastfield Road features heavily in one book, but I called it The Anne Boleyn as in my story it was a den of criminality. I wrote to a popular city centre hotel and my old school, King’s, to see if I could use their names in my crime thriller. The hotel threatened to sue if I used their name, although King’s were okay with it. In the finish, I called the school The Prince’s School instead, as the story doesn’t end well for some of the students.” Ross told me what inspired him to start writing. “I had the idea for my first book nearly 10 years ago but couldn’t think of anything to give it an edge. I’d been a manager in call centres for most of my working life and was bored with it, so I randomly became a prison officer to do something interesting. It’s not a job for the faint-hearted but it gave me some great material.” To get an idea of how popular Shadows of Regrets is, you can check out the many comments online. I wondered whether reading comments was something that made Ross nervous. “In a way, reviews are the best part of it,” he said. “Someone taking the time to review your book is a great thing to wake up to, and the majority are positive. Most authors aren’t in it for money (which is just as well!), they only want people to read and enjoy their work. That said, I have had a few bad ones. It’s a real shock when you get your first vicious comment.” Having read a few dozen pages of Ross’ work, I’m already looking forward to seeing what

Mikey Clarke

he releases next. He told me, “I’m working on a detective novel trilogy. The first book is almost finished and has the team investigating a serial killer. It’s set around Malbourne, Longueville and Woodston. “Peterborough receives more than its fair share of bad press but I like living here. I hoped fellow Peterborians would enjoy reading about the streets they know in stories that don’t just focus on negative elements of the city. That said, they are crime books!” Any advice for anyone else who aspires to write a book? “My advice to budding authors is simple… Turn your computer on, type Chapter 1, and you’re away. The journey of 80,000 words starts with the first one. So many words can be daunting and is enough to prevent some from starting their book, so they should ignore it. Aim to write 2000 words a day, which is achievable, and if you did it every day, you would be typing the end in a little over a month.” Ross wanted me to stress how appreciative he is of all the support he’s received. “I’ve had a lot of support from people in the city over the last few years,” he said. “Many have got in touch to say they have enjoyed reading books set in their home town. Writing is a lonely pastime, so I really appreciate the feedback and encouragement. I’m happy to answer questions if anyone wants to contact me. There are easy-tojoin supportive groups on Facebook for those who love reading or want to write.” To find out more about the local author and his books, look up Ross Greenwood on Facebook and get your copy of Shadows of Regret on Amazon. Time saving TreaTs for moTher’s Day Happy Mother’s Day to all the lovely mummies from Peterborough. Health and beauty related gifts are often top of the sales charts for our loved ones. This year, ESP thought we would have a look at some instant ‘quick fixes’ for busy mums, which can also double up as a great gift if you haven’t got one yet. Tip 1: Using a soft peach eyeliner pencil on your lower inner eyelid will make dark circles and redness less noticeable. We recommend: NYX Professional Makeup Wonder Pencil – which has a triple use as a concealer, eye brightener and lip liner for mums on the go. A bargain at £4.50. Tip 2: Using shampoos for coloured hair continuously will make your hair look and feel dry. So invest in another option and use at least once a week. We recommend: Dove Advanced Hair Series shampoos and conditioners from £6.59. Tip 3: Get the gel nail look with a normal off the shelf nail polish. Same result without the price tag of a manicure. We recommend: Set of 3 NX Gel Nail Polishes from Next. A bargain at £10 for the set and they look great on your dressing table too.

This year, it’s taking place on Friday March 8, and the theme is #Balanaceforbetter. Last year, lots of health and beauty brands wanted to celebrate and ‘give back’ to women by offering discounts on products for one day only. Others offered a cut of certain products to various charities supporting the empowerment of women. We have it on good authority that 2019 will see more of the same, with companies like the Body Shop, Elizabeth Arden, and Elemis all getting involved. So whatever you’re doing on the day, take some time out to look at how the beauty industry is backing women, and you might get some bargains too.

WaLK aLL over CanCer This March, look out for Walk All Over Cancer. It’s a fundraising and activity challenge that occurs annually every March in aid of the charity Cancer Research UK. We are all challenged to a sponsored walk of 10,000 steps every day during the month, and all proceeds from the fundraising are donated to the charity. We all know the ‘magic number’ of 10,000 steps should be on our to do list, so what a great way to kickstart the motivation and raise some funds for a great cause in the process. 36 www.espmag.co.uk

Well Being Karen Devine’s

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

DIET/WELLBEING – you are responsible 100% for what you choose to eat and drink and the lifestyle you lead. Is what you are doing in this area creating health or destroying it over time? This is not to trigger guilt for those odd times we enjoy cake, wine or a few chips, life is for living after all, but if these are in your diet too often you know that the balance has tipped unfavourably.

Time for your own spring awakening... There’s a lot of talk about ‘sovereignty’ in the midst of, dare I mention the ‘B’ word… Brexit, the term we are all so over and done with! The focus is on many wanting to take back sovereignty and become self-governing once again. What I find interesting is that this comes at a current time that’s known astrologically as the Age of Aquarius.

thoughts, form our own beliefs instead of accepting those of others. Becoming a ‘sovereign being’ takes us to the heart centre and moves us from the head. The heart is where our own truth lies.

This is from Wikipedia: ‘Age of Aquarius is an astrological term denoting either the current or forthcoming astrological age, depending on the method of calculation. Astrologers maintain that an astrological age is a product of the earth's slow precessional rotation and lasts for 2,160 years, on average.’ The Age of Pisces which we have now left was more about ego, survival of the fittest, competitiveness, what we could ‘get’ from the world. The Age of Aquarius is different in that collectively we are seeking out who we really are, what can we ‘give and give back’ to this world, what our untapped skills and talents are. People around the globe are seeking peace, love, communities and working together and helping ourselves and the planet. You wouldn’t think so though when you read/watch/listen to the mainstream media which I think often has the opposite effect as it seems to divide, create fear and hatred.

Being true to ourselves is key to taking back our power, finding our own truths, our own 38 www.espmag.co.uk

DO MORE OF WHAT BRINGS YOU ALIVE – have you ever noticed that when you’re not doing or following the right path you are more sluggish, depressed, or find you eat more unhealthy foods? When we do something we love, suddenly many of those symptoms disappear. Do more of what lights you up rather than dims your shine.

Some of us just lie down and accept things we hear from others without any question. I fear many have become lazy, distracted with technology, or become so caught up in materialism and consumerism that we are led like sheep to buy, think, do, and be what we are told, all without realising it.

CONNECTION – find or create a group that is working towards the same goals. If your family/friends don’t support your new choices, then find a tribe that can lift and elevate you to where you want to be. Around 25 years ago I was interested in meditation, it was so whacky to family and friends that I chose to attend a meditation group each week for almost 3 years. It was not only enjoyable, it helped me ask those deeper questions without fear or ridicule and was nurturing and nourishing.

Being true to ourselves is key to taking back our power...

SEARCH – look for online documentaries that align with you. There are so many that you can now subscribe to that bring so much of what you won’t read/see/hear on main stream TV. Read books, connect with others online - I belong to numerous groups that help me with this.

In order for us to create our own individual sovereignty we need to be more discerning about the beliefs and attitudes that we’ve blindly accepted from our society and possibly our elders as the norm.

SYMPTOMS – do you listen to the body’s language? Do you suffer from brain fog, sluggishness, bowel issues, insomnia, low mood, dry skin, coated tongue, aches/pains, fatigue and more? These are all signals that guide us to make some changes, of course, asking your GP is advised but it’s you that needs to make the changes, (if you want to listen of course). Those changes may be to what you eat and drink but also a call for lifestyle changes that help to create harmony.

So how do we become what can be called a ‘sovereign being’? How do we free ourselves out of the shackles we knowingly or unknowingly carry around with us?

Firstly, we have to wake up and look at ourselves honestly - why do we think, believe, purchase, or do the things we do? Are these our own beliefs/thoughts/opinions or that which we have been spoon fed over the years from society or our peers? If choosing our life is learnt and we don’t like it, why not choose something different?

If you have felt rumblings of deep searching inside, asking those bigger questions about your life and the world at large then you are not alone, in fact millions around the globe are asking those same questions you are. Old structures are starting to be broken down (order can often follow chaos), this is happening collectively and individually – it is called an awakening. In health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

Classical Reflection

Here at ESP we’re big supporters of talented local twins Classical Reflection who’ve been performing with some big stars… and meeting some four legged ones too. Naomi and Hannah were already passionate about supporting Guide Dogs having boarded dogs during their advanced training and even adopted two retired guide dogs themselves. The girls are keen to encourage others to get involved and help. “Guide Dogs need lots of helpers,” the singers explained, “and there are many ways people can get involved and help from puppy walking, driving, fundraising, boarding dogs or even administration. Even if you just have an hour free a week there are areas you can help with.”

P

eterborough’s stars of The Voice, Naomi and Hannah Moxon, have been performing at some high profile events with the likes of Aled Jones and Pam Rhodes but we’re pleased to report they have some hometown gigs lined up this year so you can catch them live. Last year was hectic for the twins and saw them appearing again at the Royal Albert Hall for the Salvation Army Christmas Concert, with Pam Rhodes from Songs of Praise for a Carol Concert in central London and with Aled Jones at Coventry Cathedral for the Guide Dogs Christmas Wishes Concert. They took a little time out to relax at the start of this year and when we caught up

with them for a chat they had recently been invited for a behind the scenes tour at the Guide Dogs breeding centre in Leamington Spa. “We were blindfolded and had to walk through a dark tunnel with traffic noises with different path textures – that was really interesting – all your other senses work much harder like your sense of smell and hearing.” “It was such a wonderful experience being able to cuddle the litter of eight golden puppies who were just six weeks old,” the twins told us. “We loved all the puppies especially a puppy called Una – to be honest we could have brought any of them home. We did joke and pointed out that’s why we were wearing large coats so we could smuggle one out!”

Collabro @ The Cresset

There’s a real treat for fans of musical theatre at the Cresset this month. On Saturday March 23 Britain’s Got Talent winners, Collabro, the world’s most successful musical theatre group, will take to the stage. In 2014 they met for their first rehearsal above a pub in London and just a month later went on to rouse the whole of Hammersmith Apollo into a standing ovation during their first ever public performance of Stars for the Britain’s Got Talent judges. 40 www.espmag.co.uk

Since winning the competition with one of the biggest majorities ever, the’ve gone on to release four hugely successful albums, have performed at the Royal Variety Performance; returned to the Britain’s Got Talent stage twice (most recently as part of the 10-year Grand Final compilation of past contestants – having been voted ‘The Nation’s Favourite BGT Winner’ in a national poll) and are now enormously successful internationally. Support comes from Georgia & The Vintage Youth along with special guest Kerry Ellis (West End, Broadway and Recording star). There are a variety of ticket options including VIP packages visit www.cresset.co.uk for details or call 01733 265705.

For fans of puns and one-liners: Appropriately titled Gagster’s Paradise, Gary Delaney’s brand new show (Saturday March 9, 7.30pm) promises an evening of expertly crafted gaggery. A Mock the Week regular, Gary’s shows are renowned in the business for a near unrivalled volume of high-class gags, and he’s been described as having ‘more quality jokes in one hour than most comics have in their entire careers’ by The Scotsman.

Cluster-bombed with yoghurt on Taskmaster, half-killed on Bear Grylls' Celebrity Island, Mark Watson (Thursday March 7, 7.30pm) returns to what he's best at: being indoors. As scrawny and impassioned as ever, one of the UK's wittiest and thinnest acts offers some suggestions on improving the state of the world at his usual high jokeand-rant-per-minute rate.

Ahir Shah’s latest comedy show ‘Duffer’ (Sunday March 10, 8pm) is about life and what comes after, death and what comes before, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Duffer is touring the UK fresh from critically acclaimed sell out runs at London’s Soho Theatre and Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it earned Shah his second nomination in a row for Best Show at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards.

Big Year Ahead for Austin Gold

The Money Shot

“2019 is gonna be a big one!” Dave Smith lead singer of Austin Gold tells us, and with so much going on for this Peterborough band we’re already convinced! ESP has been right behind the guys because we think they’re destined for big things. We catch them live whenever we can and even our resident adventurer, Darren Grigas was seen in a desert sporting an Austin Gold T shirt on his latest challenge! We like to spread the word as far as we can and Namibia is the furthest so far… Austin Gold are building a great following and have now secured their biggest show yet with a mainstage slot at The Ramblin Man Fair Festival on Sunday July 21 supporting Living Colour, Chris Robinson Brotherhood ( Black Crows ) & Foreigner, with The Darkness, Wildhearts and Black Stone Cherry also appearing. Their second album is due for release on vinyl and download around April/May time and Dave tells us he’s been writing furiously for Album 3 which they’re already rehearsing. Live wise the band will be touring in September and have more support slots lined up with GUN later in the year as well. We recommend you catch Austin Gold while you can - locally they have an intimate acoustic show on Thursday March 14 at St. John's Church and they’ll be performing at Charters in August. ESP went to their last hometown gig at the Key Theatre and it was amazing – the next one on Saturday August 31 is nearly sold out so get in quick!

Charity Soul Night I’ve always been a fan of local band the Motor City Vipers so I’m pleased to see the return, for the eighth year running, of their charity soul night. Again it’s at The Brewery Tap on Saturday April 6 raising funds and awareness for the fantastic work done at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. Playing the very best of Motown and Northern Soul classics, The Vipers’ live repertoire is a veritable who’s who of 60s and 70s soulful floor-fillers – from The Temptations, Wilson Pickett, The Four Tops and Dobie Gray, to The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and Otis Redding; and promises to have you dancing your pants off all night long! In addition to the not-to-be-missed sound of an 8-piece live soul band, the event also includes support from the region’s top soul DJs and Brewery Tap regulars, Julz and Paul D, mixing the tunes into the early hours. “We’re looking forward to yet another amazing night of soulful shenanigans and hoping it will be another sellout show for this great cause,” said Vipers frontman, Alec Chapman. 46 www.espmag.co.uk

Motor City Vipers were formed in the spring of 2009 and have gained themselves an enviable reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting live soul bands – having played on the same bill as The Blockheads, Neville Staple (The Specials), Kiki Dee, The Commitments, Diane Shaw and Geno Washington, as well as playing at festivals and events up and down the country. The evening will include a raffle and auction which will help raise awareness and much-needed funds for Sue Ryder Care’s Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. Tickets are priced at £10 each and available from band members, DJs, or by credit/debit card from the Brewery Tap on 01733 358500. www.MotorCityVipers.co.uk.

Original Tunes @ New Acoustic Night Rob Bull is well known on the local music circuit for his fantastic covers band Children of the Revolution and increasingly for his own original tunes too. He’s one of many talented musicians this city can boast and I’m pleased to see that he’s helping bring more exposure to original music on the scene. For over a year Rob’s been running acoustic nights featuring original tunes every few months at The New Crown in Whittlesey and they've been very well supported so he’s now branching out. The first new night is being staged at The Ploughman in Werrington on Friday April 5 with another on Friday April 12 at The New Crown Whittlesey. You can expect four or five solo acoustic original music acts each playing around half hour sets. The Ploughman gig sees four acts including Rob himself, Adam Leon from Leon, Jimmy Doherty from High Rollers and Anthony Shiels from the Candle Thieves, so it should be a great night. Rob says – “It's difficult to find gigs let alone paying gigs for original music, so we are hoping the idea of four or five guys together, all promoting and bringing different people to the gigs will make it a worthwhile venture for the venue as well as the musicians.” Fingers crossed!

Meet… THE AGENTS You may have notice a new name cropping up in the ESP Gig Guide and on the local circuit – but while the name is new there are plenty of familiar faces!

Ahoy There… Cap’n Rasty

L

If you ever caught the fantastic League of Mentalmen at a gig you’ll know they were a lively bunch who really knew how to get a place jumping – including Peterborough Beer Festival. Well, I’m very pleased to report that lead singer Mark Rastall is back with more crazy outfits and stomping tunes – but this time with a distinctly pirate vibe. Get ready to ride the high seas me hearties with Cap’n Rasty and the Big Time Charlies. The new band is a five piece outfit, all with stage pseudonyms, clearly pirate related. On drums we have Harry Guantanamo, on one guitar, Tommy Too Clean, on another guitar Death's Door, on bass Boatswain Droney Monotoney and the olde buccaneer Cap'n Rasty out front and singing! Cap’n Rasty (Mark) told ESP – “The theme started at a Bourne Festival gig that The League of Mentalmen headlined. Loads of people dressed up as pirates when they came to the gig, including all the band, and it kinda stuck! “We will be playing some old Mentalmen songs that we re-mixed from the originals and have followed the same theme with the Charlies – you'll never hear Jolene and Tiffany's I Think We're Alone Now in the same light!” The guys have already played two sold out gigs so make sure you catch them at The Nag’s Head in Bourne in April and at The Ploughman for a rescheduled gig on Saturday May 11. Personally I can’t wait!

et me introduce you to The Agents, a newly formed 11 piece band all from Peterborough. The band’s made up of members from The One Eyed Cats, Third Stone From The Sun, Arc Nation, the Soul Runners, The Black Marias and The Tweedie Sisters paying tribute to songs and sounds of Classic Soul and R&B influenced music. They’re kicking off their year with a gig on Saturday March 2 at The Limetree (£10 otd or tickets for £8) and have others lined up at the Burghley Club, Thorney Club and the Thorney charity music festival plus many more – keep an eye on their facebook page for more details (search The Agents). We caught up with Marie Mitchell from The Agents to find out more… How did you all get together and The Agents come about as a band? “After myself, Kim, Nancy and Mitch stopped gigging with The Soul Runners, Mitch and I were starting a new business venture together (At Last Tea Rooms). We took a look around watching all the great live bands playing in and around Peterborough and looked for musicians that we thought would absolutely ‘get’ what we wanted to do with a new project we had in mind. Julian DeSilva our drummer is an old school days friend of Mitch and they’ve been in various original bands together over the years so he was asked first. Kim and Nancy are my sisters so we’ve been singing together as a three part harmony for quite a while (ha ha).

Simon Russell on piano is without doubt the best R&B/rock and roll pianist in this town in our opinion and we asked him, Jerome Hunt and Tony Trundle (saxophones) if they’d be interested in joining the band we were putting together and they agreed. Dan Sheehan (trombone) is relatively new to this city but already is the go to trombonist for just about every brass section this city has. He came along to our first rehearsal and then Dan became our man. Next up and a shoe horn into the band was Joe Drury playing bass, I’ve known this handsome, talented lad since he was born watching his musical talent blossom into what (in my opinion) is one of the greatest unassuming bass players this city has ever produced ( I also get to call him my son!). Mirco on guitar also plays with One Eyed Cats and is our latest member to join originally as a stand in but after one rehearsal with both guitarists it was decided to offer him a more permanent placing. When you hear Mirco and Charlie playing together for the first time it’s just incredible and irresistible to us which brings us nicely to Charlie Scott our ultra talented young female guitarist. We first saw her playing about 4 years ago and like so many was absolutely blown away by her talent. She was and still is playing in her band Third Stone from the Sun and if you have heard her then you will know she is incredible, if you haven’t heard her yet you are

missing out.” What's the idea behind what you're offering? “What we offer is first and foremost our heart and soul to every gig that we do, we do it because we love it, we do it because we feel every last note and feeling that the originators wanted you to feel when they recorded these songs,We don't ‘put on a show’ we just pure and simply love what we do and that acts as a mirror to the audience. If they can see you enjoy what you are doing then they will enjoy it too.” What songs can we expect to hear? “We have chosen songs that we love to play, Classic R&B original Soul, and what we consider up to date songs that were heavily influenced by these two genres, in our set list are Proud Mary (Ike and Tina Turner) Hey Joe (Otis Redding version) I’ll Go Crazy (James Brown) and Amy Winehouse, Plan B, to Slade and Ian Dury and the Blockheads. A little bit of everything” Will you be more of a functions band? “Unfortunately because of the size of our band we are very limited to the venues we play, so have to really hand pick them. so big rooms are a must in most cases. We are a big band to dance your socks off to so a dance floor is required. We will play anywhere we can physically squeeze in!” What gigs are you most looking forward to? “All of them is the easy answer, but we do hear the Abax is putting on a few gigs now, eh? Peterborough Music Scene United Gig sounds good to me...” www.espmag.co.uk

Extra Cubans & Cognac New Lineup! Cubans & Cognac are regulars on the local circuit but you’ll notice a bit of a change next time you see them live. Their bass player Alfred has left the band to pursue other opportunities and the band wish him the best of luck for the future. So, completing the line up now is the very talented Jack Parkinson stepping up to the bass. You can see him action at his first Cubans & Cognac gig on Saturday March 9 at The Burghley Club.

Charity Gig @ The Met We received an email from Steve Jason who does so much for live music locally at The Met Lounge on Bridge Street. He asked us to give a mention to a charity gig at The Met featuring three Peterborough bands – including two leading bands from the Peterborough pop punk ra of 2003-2008. They’re all coming together to stage a concert to raise funds to go towards Pancreatic Cancer Research on Saturday March 23. Organiser Paul England from State of Freedom who’s organising the gig said - “Cancer is never good! However it’s slightly better when you have a close support network who are literally willing to do anything to show their love for you. EVEN run a marathon to fundraise for you. That's exactly what our good friend Mr Jonathon Goose has decided to do for a close family member. “To help maximise his fundraising, we figured we'd round up some local deviants for your viewing pleasure, with all proceeds going to Pancreatic Cancer Research. A special thanks to Mr Jack Powell for the outstanding poster design for the event and Rocket Park Studios who will be supplying equipment for us on the night.” The three bands appearing are Paul’s band State of Freedom, who after their return to The Met stage last year after a 12 year hiatus, are itching to hit it again, Chamber of Tears who started as a tribute band for The Met's very own golden child, Ryan Chambers, and Radicus who Paul describes as – “The best band to ever grace this God damned town.” So all punk fans should give their support to a great cause and enjoy a special evening at The Met Lounge on Saturday March 23. Tickets are available online from www.skiddle.com and www.seetickets.com. 48 www.espmag.co.uk

Idolising Nova Release New Single Another Peterborough originals band we’re keeping a close eye on is Iodolising Nova who’ve just released the first track from their debut EP and are set to announce some exciting festival gigs soon. tight band with a great ability to write fantastic, catchy tracks that have a habit of getting stuck in the back of your head. “This track takes the band’s already polished sound and with a few refinements takes it to another level, leaving us with a fantastic indie pop track which wouldn’t sound out of place on national radio alongside some of the heavy hitters in the music world.” Run Away is out now on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and all the other major online stores. We’ll keep you posted on their progress but make sure you follow Idolising Nova’s Facebook page for the latest on which festivals they’re playing this year.
