QUEENSGATE SEEKS NEW CHARITY OF THE YEAR

If you’re involved in a local charity – or know someone who is – now’s the time to apply to become Queensgate Shopping Centre’s new Charity of the Year! Applications have just opened for the 2018/2019 placement to receive twelve months of marketing, fundraising and event support, designed to give local charities a powerful platform to raise funds. Queensgate’s current Charity of the Year, Anna’s Hope, collected nearly £8,000 through the Christmas gift wrapping service alone. Once the charity has been selected, they’ll be offered free use of the centre’s commercial space, professional marketing and public relations support, volunteering hours donated by Queensgate’s centre team and involvement in the centre’s events to help raise awareness of their cause. The Boat House at Thorpe Meadows tell us they’ll be staging a series of fundraising events called Macmillan May throughout this month. All of the details for the events will be displayed within the pub with different events being added so pop in and see how you can get involved. PRINCE OF WALES FEATHERS BEER FEST We always feel summer’s getting underway once the local beer festivals kick in and The Prince of Wales Feathers hasn’t disappointed. They’re

staging their 12th Castor & Ailsworth Beer Festival from May 11-13 supporting the RAF centenary. There’ll be 30 real ales & cider as well as a rum bar. Live music comes from The Money Shot & The Guards.

KIDS CAN BE TIME EXPLORERS

If the kids like their history here’s the chance to experience the story of Norman Peterborough through family craft activities at Peterborough Cathedral. From Monday May 28 to Friday June 1 they can construct a castle for Tout Hill for Abbott Turoldus, make a chest to hide treasure from Hereward the Wake, and create an arch to help rebuild the Abbey after the fire of 1116. Entry’s free and there’s no need to book, just head along to the cathedral Nave, 1pm - 4pm. Donations are welcome to cover costs. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

BURGHLEY FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS Discounted early bird tickets have gone on sale for the popular outdoor film screenings returning to Burghley House in Stamford this summer. There’ll be five days and nights of great movies to watch under the stars in the glorious garden setting. The Burghley Film Festival runs from July 25-29 and includes hit movies ranging from Saturday Night Fever to The Lion King – along with a spot of Murder on the Orient Express as well as acclaimed war epic Dunkirk but also some tasty extras too. New for this year will be a new food market style area offering filmgoers a host of foodie treats – including American classics served from an airstream trailer – alongside top movies, timeless classics and family favourites during daytime and evening shows. 1940s THEMED PARTY Fancy a boogie woogie this June? Tickets are on sale for a 1940s dance party at Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday June 16. Go in costume and get ‘In The Mood’ to dance to swing and jazz classics from Rita & The Rogues. ST BOTOLPH’S FESTIVAL ON THE GREEN 2018

The organisers of St. Botolph’s Festival tell us plans are well underway for the thirteenth year of the family event on Botolph Green. It’ll be held on June 15 – 17 and this year’s theme is ‘Meeting your neighbour’. Having started as a BBQ between neighbours, the event is now a wellestablished community-run event. It’ll be packed with live bands, Military Wives choir, snail racing, stalls and funfair, a stage play, classic cars, children’s storytelling, village games and a dog show. GREAT ORMOND STREET FESTIVAL CHARITY DAY They’re a charitable bunch over at The Bull in Newborough and they’re staging a special charity day to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. The Mayor will be opening the event on Saturday May 5 at 2pm and it’ll run through until 9pm. There’ll be plenty of family fun throughout the day including a bouncy castle, tombola, face painting and lots more. You can belt out some tunes on the karaoke in the bar and enjoy a disco. BE A HUMAN HOUND TO RAISE CHARITY CASH

Here’s a fun way to raise money for a school, charity, club or good cause. Peterborough Greyhound Stadium plans to let the human hounds take to the track for a series of special races throughout May that should be a laugh and raise some cash at the same time. There’ll be three heats over the first three Fridays of the month, with the final being on the final Friday and you can enter a Human Hound to run on behalf of your chosen charity or team to raise some much-needed funds. It’s free to enter, and you’ll get £50 for your chosen charity just for participating. If you get through to the final by coming 1st or 2nd in your heat, then you could win up to £500. DEMENTIA DROP-IN NIGHT Alzheimer’s Society in Peterborough is calling on everyone to unite and take action, big or small, this Dementia Action Week, May 21 - 27. On Wednesday May 23, Peterborough’s Dementia Resource Centre on Lincoln Road will extend its opening hours until 8pm offering a drop-in event for access to information, guidance and support. Double the tunes for Elvis Fans Elvis fans are spoilt for choice in the city this month with two top tributes to The King heading our way. Walk to Remember for Thorpe Hall Hospice

Steampunk and Steam Trains!

Steampunk is heading back to Peterborough with a gathering at Nene Valley Railway this month, followed by an appearance at the Peterborough Heritage Festival in June. If you’ve not heard of Steampunk it’s a real mix of science fiction and history and typically features steam-powered machinery or clockwork devices, it has a Jules Verne feel to it and results in some incredible outfits and events. Head town to NVR on the weekend of May 12 and 13 and you’ll see what we mean! It’s great fun and there’ll be plenty of Steampunk fans dressed up as well as stalls and exhibits. If you’re keen to get out for some fresh air why not make it count for charity too? A new event’s being held this month which will get you out in some beautiful surroundings with a wander through woodlands raising money for Sue Ryder Care. Walk to Remember is a 5km walk of remembrance and reflection setting off from Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, giving people the chance to remember loved ones while fundraising for hospice care.

They’re hoping to see hundreds of people joining the walk on Sunday May 20 which starts in the beautiful grounds of the hall before heading out to Longthorpe village, through woodland and back to the finishing line in the grounds of NGA HR, Thorpe Hall’s neighbours, for a celebratory drink and rest. The route’s been chosen to be perfect for families and pets giving everyone chance to remember someone special, celebrate the life of someone who’s missed or just to enjoy a spring stroll. Already more than 200 walkers have signed up with the target of 300 runners in sight. Walkers will be encouraged to wear a back sign dedicated to the memory of someone special. Two of our favourite tipples are being celebrated at Charters on the river this month. Always good for a pint of real ale, they’re now giving us the chance to try 30 gins & 20 ciders (not all at once!) from Thursday May 3 – Monday May 7. Entertainment during the festival kicks off with a Pub Quiz on the Thursday at 8pm – we’d like to see some of the answers to this one after a few ciders! Friday night features live music with Redemption on stage at 10.30pm and Saturday it’s Indie Night with DJ Anthony Thornhill from 9pm. The festival rounds up on Sunday with music from Division Duo at 3pm. Of course if a cider or G&T isn’t your tipple, the bar’s just been awarded a CAMRA Gold Award for its guest real ales so go along anyway but enjoy a beer instead!

Time to join the Youth Jam! An event by young people – for young people

Do you know someone aged 8-28yrs or a young group with a skill or talent? It’s time to celebrate the city’s young people and show what they can really do in a big celebration in the city centre this summer. Music | Sport | Poetry | Drama | Performance | Dance ...it’s a chance to shine! Parade starts at 10am kicking off a fun day in Cathedral Square, with stalls, attractions and performances until 4pm. Youth Jam ‘18 is an exciting Big Lottery funded event organised by YMCA Trinity Group and The Cresset in conjunction with the Peterborough Celebrates programme of events.

10th Heritage Festival is on its Way Not long to go now until one of our favourite events of the year. Next month the city will host its 10th Peterborough Heritage Festival organised by Vivacity. This year the city will come alive with living history displays and entertainment over the weekend of Saturday June 16 and Sunday June 17 and it’s a real summer highlight for Peterborough. This year, the theme is ‘Festival of Celebrations’ as 2018 coincides not only with the 10th annual Heritage Festival in the city, but three other significant anniversaries. These are the centenary of the end of World War One, the centenary of Women’s Suffrage and 900 years of Peterborough Cathedral. As usual you can look forward to a large range of spectacular displays, events and interactive opportunities that the festival has become known for in its ten year history. Attractions will include battle re-enactments, arena displays, a vintage fair, have-ago archery and performances throughout the day. A brand new attraction to this year’s Peterborough Heritage Festival is the addition of a 1940s-style dance party on the evening of Saturday June 16 in Peterborough Cathedral. Countdown to Oundle International Festival There’s lots to look forward to this summer and July sees the 34th Oundle International Festival bringing us ten days of outstanding entertainment. Some events such as the Pasadena Roof Orchestra have already sold out, so don’t hang about! The Festival runs from July 4 – 14 and is packed to the brim with some great events. One of our favourites is Party at the Wharf which rounds things off on a high on Saturday July 14. This great outdoor picnic concert will see you Dancing in the Moonlight to headliners Toploader with support from fantastic Peterborough band Austin Gold who we’ve featured recently. This festival really has something for everyone including Jazz star Atila, a regular performer at Ronnie Scott's who brings us a celebration of the life and songs of Nat King Cole. There’s Kabantu with their highly infectious blend of world & folk music with Celtic reels, Brazilian samba, Balkan folk and South African influenced pieces. There’s also great open air theatre on Friday July 13 with a production of David Walliams’ popular book The Midnight Gang by Heartbreak Productions, one to pack your picnic for at Barnwell Country Park. Building on the success of last year, there’ll be another 'Oundle On Show' weekend. Events taking place on Saturday July 7 include Barnwell Country Park's Music in the Park with five local brass bands, a Classic Bicycle Ride through the town, and on the Sunday, Open Oundle will provide a chance to look around some of the town's 'hidden' buildings and join historical tours plus there’s the Big Afternoon Tea. Tribute Stars in Fake Festival The second bank holiday weekend in May sees a great gig on the Embankment featuring the next best thing to many of your favourite artists! Peterborough’s Fake Festival on Saturday May 26 is packed with great performances by top touring tribute acts of The Killers, Queen, Blondie, The Stone Roses, The Rolling Stones and Peterborough’s very own Bowie tribute star, Aladdinsane. They each aim to provide an authentic reproduction of the stars in sound and performance. It runs from lunchtime through until late in the evening in a giant marquee with food stalls and a bar and if the weather’s good there’ll be other stalls and entertainment too. Memorial Gig For Musician Mark Perks Last year we reported on the sad news that well known local singer Mark Perks, frontman of The Rocket Dogs had died suddenly of a heart condition. We're now pleased to tell you about a very special memorial gig being staged in his memory later this summer. The Last Bite is a collaboration of local bands who’ll be doing The Rocket Dogs’ famous set list, with key singers stepping in for Mark and filling his shoes for the night. It’s being held at the Peterborough Sports and Social Club on Lincoln Road on Friday August 10. Mark’s widow Karen told ESP – “Mark died suddenly on the 3rd August 2017, just five weeks after we got married and it was caused by a heart condition, which is why we are doing Mark’s memorial gig with all proceeds going to the British Heart Foundation. Mark worked at ABN who are sponsoring the event, which is great, so we would like to thank them for their support.” The Rocket Dogs with Mark on vocals were a hugely popular local band who played many of the pubs as well as larger events including the Peterborough Beer Festival, and he’s sadly missed by many on the local music scene. Tickets for the night will be £5 and available on the door, but get there early as we expect this one to be very busy.

Pop-Up Theatre Brings New Play to Hampton Eastern Angles Theatre Company will be bringing their latest spring touring production to a poptheatre in Serpentine Green Shopping Centre later this month. After the success of last year’s The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart this latest play, Guesthouse, will appear at The Undercroft in Hampton on Thursday May 24. Set in Clacton-on-Sea, Guesthouse tells the poignant story of three women from the same family and the difficult decisions they’re forced to make when their traditional B&B begins to hit financial problems. The mum, daughter and grand-daughter, (skilfully portrayed by Amanda Bellamy, Clare Humphrey and Eleanor Jackson) are caught in an emotional triangle fired by past resentments and secrets. This month Stibbington Residential Centre celebrates its 30th anniversary with STIBBfest. Royal Instead of Loyal Am I a loyal fan of football? Yes, most of the time. But it’s not been a good year for the teams I support, so on FA Cup final day I’m going to take a break from what will most probably be another game littered with incompetent refereeing and switch over to the royal wedding instead. Unlike the cup final, the result has already been decided. Prince Harry, who I’ve always liked, has gone against the grain and not picked a bride who reeks of royal like his brother did. Instead he’s chosen a wife who has sex appeal, a bit of edge and a woman who has all the skilful attributes to feel at home in the public eye. Look up the word princess in a dictionary and Meghan Markle won’t necessarily come to mind, but that’s the point. She’s stylish, intelligent, can hold her own and independent. More importantly, she’s easy on the eye and that’s why I’ll be watching the royal wedding.

Just The Fillip For Names? Staying on the regal theme, as the country awaits the birth of royal baby number three, it’s predicted the new arrival will either be named Alice or Phillip. Alice I can live with – it’s both old and contemporary and it’s not usually shortened. But Philip is another story. Please Prince William, if it’s a boy don’t call him Phillip! I mean, who still calls their new born boys Phillip these days? So 1970s. The name Phillip means ‘lover of horses’ but there aren’t many boys I know locally who’ve grown up to love horses – horsepower maybe but not the four-legged kind. The baby naming trend tends to follow the names of royal newborns, which is why George is currently fourth in the list of most popular boys’ names. Harry tops the charts and that’s not surprising since Prince Harry is liked by most. Then there’s Freddie and Oliver. Strange how names can throw up negative connotations though. Freddie makes me immediately think of Freddie Starr and the name Oliver draws me to Oliver Reed who liked a shandy or two. Maybe I’m showing my age. I guess I’ve got nothing against horses after all.

COMPANIONSHIP Time to get all serious. Find human companionship (not a dog or a plant to water and talk to) and you’ll find wellbeing: Laughing, sharing, crying, farting in bed, expensive electricity bills, hair clips piercing the balls of your feet, ignoring engine oil light because it reminded her of a Christmas tree, into your joint account overdraft because the living room needed more candles, paying extra for luggage when one make-up bag wasn’t enough, sleeping with the window shut in summer because of spiders and taking the mother-in-law to garden centres.

Pointless Sex Surveys I can’t even remember how it started but for years I’ve been receiving surveys to do with relationships and sex – and the findings are getting all the more obvious. Aldo Zilli Returns! Celebrity chef Aldo Zilli was so impressed with the city’s Italian Festival last year that he’s coming back this time with a cooking demonstration for us to indulge in. The festival is in its 10th year and takes place on Cathedral Square on September 8 and 9 and no other UK city has hosted an Italian Festival for so long and so successfully. The event’s become the launch pad for other community celebrations such as the Diwali Festival and Food and Faith Festival, which are supported by the city council. Expect the city centre to be awash with everything that’s Italian including the finest food, produce, dance, song and other entertainment.

Owner Ash is a qualified personal trainer and knows a thing or two about good nutrition. He also knows how to press my buttons with the ‘Avocado Madness’ burrito he knocked up for me. This was proper food porn. It was bursting at the seams with brown rice, black beans, corn, cheddar, salsa, chicken and of course avocado. Damn it was good. So good in fact, I wasn’t paying attention to my lensman John Baker who snapped me caught in the moment, fully embracing that fall in love first bite. Ash and his team have got it all covered. Get ready to #LookUp as Vivacity brings Antony Gormley’s ‘Places to Be’ back to Peterborough.

One of our favourite set of sculptures is set to return to Peterborough in spectacular style. ‘Places to Be’, three life-sized lead statues, was Antony Gormley Antony Gormley’s first sculpture commission and 30 years ago (yes really!) it was installed at the Peterborough Rowing Lake. This month Vivacity will be proudly re-siting the three figures on the rooftops of Queensgate Shopping Centre, Leeds Building Society and Norwich Building Society taking pride of place on the city’s skyline from May 25. Antony Gormley, famous for creating the iconic Angel of the North says: “Places to Be was my first public commission. It is wonderful that it is being re-sited on a striking modern horizontal parapet, a Victorian corner tower, and the 18th century roof line around the Market Square

in the centre of Peterborough. I am very proud of this work and am delighted that with Vivacity’s help it will again be part of the collective life of the town.” To support the launch of the installation, Vivacity will be encouraging local people and visitors to #lookup and take notice of all the City has to offer. Visit their volunteers in Cathedral Square between May 25 – 27 and take a selfie! Many will remember the figures being displayed outside Greenwoods solicitors in the city centre for a time and also in an exhibition at the City Gallery in Priestgate and the Cathedral, but now having been restored after being damaged it’s hoped they will become a major attraction. Kevin Tighe, Vivacity’s CEO says: "I'm tremendously ambitious for the standing of art and culture within the City and am incredibly proud of the contribution that Vivacity has been privileged to share with this collection. Antony Gormley's iconic work is thought-provoking, inspiring, and internationally acclaimed and I strongly believe that this project will make great strides towards realising our mission of raising the profile for Art and Culture for Peterborough.” This project is just one of many activities that Vivacity will be presenting during 2018, supporting Peterborough Celebrates (900 years) and promoting the development and profile of the Arts within Peterborough.

First Peterborough Pride Festival Peterborough is to have its first Pride event this summer but it won’t be simply a parade, instead the organisers are planning a huge range of events throughout the city in a week-long celebration.

Running from June 29 – July 6 there’s an exciting range of performances and events lined up and they would like people to come up with even more. Organiser Simon Courtney Green told ESP – “My vision is that it’s Peterborough’s Pride and doesn’t belong to any one group, it’s completely inclusive. It should bring people together, be a bit of a laugh and increase visibility of the *LGBTQIA+ community. “It’s about showing solidarity and I hope everyone will embrace the concept and that during the festival the city will look visibly different – the sky’s the limit.” It’s hoped that schools, communities, churches, businesses, organisations, and neighbourhoods will all get involved and celebrate in whatever way they can. This could include organising a headline event; a retailer having a themed window display during the week; bars offering a themed cocktail, or simply displaying the rainbow flag.

Riverford Picnic Walks

It’s great to see the monthly picnic walks at Riverford are kicking off again this month with the first on Wednesday May 2. These walks are a fantastic way to sample some tasty food while getting the chance to enjoy some fresh air and exercise, find out more about this organic farm and spot some wildlife at the same time!

The walking tours at Sacrewell take place between 5pm and 7pm on the first Wednesday of every month from May until September. The dates are May 2, June 6, July 4, August 1 and September 5. Walks will be followed by a Riverford picnic of freshly made pies, dips and salads. It’s £7.50 for adults and £3.50 for children between 5-12 years old, there’s no charge for under 5s. At Last Tea Rooms If you’re looking for somewhere a little different for you tea and cake (and much more) the At Last Tea Rooms in Werrington certainly have character and some delicious food. We popped in to sample some freshly made sandwiches, a wedge of cake and squeezed in an ice cream milkshake as well! The vintage themed tea rooms, formerly a newsagents in the village, opened in March 2017, and they’ve recently served their 5,000th customer! It’s owned and run by David (Mitch) and Marie Mitchell who’ve created a great concept. There are two themed rooms, the first has a 1940’s vibe with both a vintage and retro English décor which seats 22 people and then there’s The Green Room at the back which is styled as a 1950’s American Diner complete with a small fully licensed bar, booths and retro stools and tables. You’ll find a great mix on the menu with fantastic homemade cakes, ‘Old School’ puddings and pastries along with all kinds of sandwiches made fresh to order. Their homemade sausage rolls are one of their specialities, made with locally sourced Lincolnshire sausage meat but there’s also a range of paninis, lasagne, chilli con carne, and baked potatoes on the Dinnertime Menu. Pop in before lunch for their Great British Breakfast Menu which is served until 12 noon daily. You’ll find them on Church Street, just next to the church.

First of all we have the Ferry Meadows Cultural Festival coming up on Saturday June 30 and Sunday July 1 – a festival of food, fun and culture. This is a great chance to get together and enjoy food, music, a cinema experience, a teddy bears’ picnic on the meadow and much more. There’ll be a main stage located on Coney Meadow with choirs, orchestras, bands and theatre groups providing entertainment throughout the day. Maxey Car and Bike Show coming in August Here’s one to look forward to as the longestablished Maxey Classic and Thoroughbred Car, Bike and 4x4 Show is set to return this summer at its picturesque lakeside venue and this year’s date for your diary is Saturday August 11. Her daughter Melissa said: “In those final days and hours as we all gathered at the hospice to

say our final goodbyes, I noticed a poster advertising the Dragon Boat Festival. “We sat by Mum’s bed all very emotional and almost in an effort to lighten the mood at a terrible time I made a flippant comment about us entering a team. The idea gave us an anchor at that time, it was something to hold on to for the future and a chance to celebrate the memory of Mum and raise funds for the Sue Ryder Hospice who had been so kind to us all.” The event is sponsored by Motorpoint and there’ll be commentary on the races by Connect FM. Good news to hear the lease has just been extended for this popular pub! The Beehive on Bourges Boulevard was supporting the soul scene with a Jazz Funk, Soul and Motown session which was back by popular demand â&#x20AC;&#x201C; look out for another one around the August bank hols. And Charters bar on the river, which is celebrating a CAMRA Gold Award for their improved range of guest ales was holding another great live music night with the ever popular Nuggets entertaining the crowds. It’s all a very long way from her showbiz debut alongside a purple dinosaur in children’s TV show Barney and Friends. Now undeniably a global superstar, Demi is embarking on the European leg of her Tell Me You Love Me world tour, and will be kicking off her UK shows just down the road from us as she takes to the Summer Saturday Live stage at Newmarket Racecourses on Saturday June 9 for what will be her first ever UK racecourse show. She’s also committed to raising awareness around LGBT issues and causes, and received GLAAD’s (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Deformation) Vanguard award in 2016. SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Cast: Alden Ehrenreich, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson Director: Ron Howard With the mixed fan response to The Last Jedi, here’s hoping the troubled production of the standalone Han Solo movie doesn’t continue a negative trend in the Star Wars universe. Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) seems to have steadied the Millennium Falcon and pulled it safely away from the asteroid field that previous directing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie) had left it floating in – after reportedly being fired deep into the film’s shoot due to creative differences.

This second ‘Star Wars Story’ movie follows the success of Rogue One, and like that, is a prequel to the original trilogy – by chronicling the twentysomething years of a younger Han Solo (the relatively unknown Alden Ehrenreich). During an adventure into a dark criminal underworld, Solo meets his equally infamous future co-pilot

Everyone can find a way of a getting involved with Peterborough Celebrates and Peterborough Rugby Club’s annual beer festival Friday May 4 to Sunday May 6 is linking up with the campaign this year. Maybe Meghan will turn into Bridezilla when things don't go her way. Sir Elton John may throw a tantrum due to the photographer telling him what to do. The Spice Girls might enthusiastically rush to the dancefloor upon hearing YMCA and Prince William might drunkenly refuse to call it a night and invite everyone back to the Palace for an after party. It's a long shot, but you never know.

PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL Saturday May 19 is the second day of the charity abseil down the north west tower of the Cathedral, in aid of both Shine UK and the Cathedral. There’ll be stalls in the Precincts, plus a giant outdoor screen in the north portico (the archway to the left of the main door) showing both the wedding and the match, whilst the brave abseilers come down the tower. It’s the perfect afternoon out! There’s no entry fee but please feel free to donate on the day in support of the charities.

OK, so that may not be the best argument for the footy but I can’t be doing with all that – "who's designed the dress, who's doing the catering, who did the flowers...?" WHO CARES?! She'll wear white, he'll look nervous, they'll say "I will", people will cry. Job done. The footy, on the other hand, will be excitement, goals, and 90 minutes of pure passion. Which, let’s be honest, if Prince Harry hits the beer, is probably more than Meghan Markle can hope for.

The pub’s celebrating both the big events! They’ll be screening the FA Cup final on their TVs and providing a magician in the afternoon to keep the kids amused so you can enjoy the footy. Lunchtime Running Sessions We all make the excuses about not having time when it comes to getting fitter but hopefully a new series of lunchtime running sessions could help. Running and exercise can be part of living a healthier lifestyle and there’s plenty of advice on the Healthy Peterborough website. This series of free lunchtime running sessions makes a return this month through to July and gives you the opportunity to slip on your trainers and get active during your lunchbreak. The runs will leave the Embankment Athletics Track in Bishop’s Road every Wednesday from May 2 to July 4 and are open to all abilities so you don’t need to be Mo Farah! The sessions take place from 12noon to 1pm and there’s a fully qualified England Athletics Endurance Coach on hand. HOW TO STRESS LESS FOR MENTAL WELLBEING We all know friends/family or co-workers who suffer mental health issues. This month Mental Health Awareness Week (May 14 - 20) is focused on stress. However, other conditions include bipolar, depression, excessive fears, OCD and many more.

If that’s not possible then placing fresh flowers in the home, playing soft relaxing healing sounds for half an hour, having a time where the TV is off so you can do other relaxing things such as draw, write, colour or just close your eyes can help.

Talking therapies and other therapies that help us express ourselves in a safe environment can help us deal with past wounds, some that may be very deep. Searching for the hidden gem in each situation is key to helping us move forward on a new journey, one that releases what is already inside of us, such as wisdom, independence, strength, love, gratitude, finding our true self, our real passions, self love and our inner peace. Hard as it can be when we lose a loved one, or are dealing with a health issue or hardship of any kind, the gift is always there if we begin to look for it. Research by YMCA as part of its ‘Be Real’ campaign has shown that half of young people have been bullied about the way they look, with two fifths of those experiencing this bullying at least once a week. As mental health problems are becoming more prominent among young people it’s hoped a new mobile app will help young people in Peterborough’s schools.

It uses a number of clinically proven techniques to assess their overall wellbeing and also provides support tools and strategies to cope. The app already has over 800,000 users and this new partnership will enable schools to join this community from just £2, per user per year, a fraction of the open market cost.* A report in February by the NAHT and Place2Be showed that schools are coming under increasing pressure to help students to not only achieve high standards academically but also to cope with a growing number of pupils who are struggling with their wellbeing. Rod Allerton, Director of Development at YMCA Trinity Group said: “We’ve developed a comprehensive range of mental health services which includes direct intervention and teacher training. Feel Stress Free is a real breakthrough, providing a new, cost effective way to empower students and staff to take control of their personal wellbeing, whilst also identifying those in need of further intervention.

“The app can be customised for each school allowing them access to data trends specific to their staff or student cohort. This enables schools to prioritise funding and resources towards tailored wellbeing programmes. ell the sun has finally returned and people are leaving their homes and looking for ways to enjoy the bright warm days to come. I ventured out to Tallington Lakes with Ethan and Oonagh-Mae to make the most of it and have a bit of a splash around on the new Stand-Up Paddle Boards (SUPs). After getting kitted out in some quality wetsuits and life jackets, we grabbed our paddles and headed out onto the water on one of the XL boards which can take up to around eight people. This was a great introduction to getting our balance and form right before moving onto the single boards which take a little more skill. On the individual boards you can get a little creative and try racing, spinning and

even dare a few yoga moves if you fancy challenging yourself. Inevitably I fell in a few times as I tried to lift the front end by planting my back foot towards the back and lifting the front foot to then spin like a pro, but instead fell in with a splosh. But hey, what’s the point wearing a wetsuit if you’re not going to get wet, right? SUPs are very popular and are a fastgrowing trend. People take them out on lakes, rivers and in the sea. Bill Bailey Interview As well as the tour, you're also currently appearing in a new TV show called In the Long Run with Idris Elba – what was it like working with him? “It was fantastic fun, and Idris is a terrific actor. He’s very instinctive and I think people will be surprised by his skill for comedy because most of the things you’ve seen him in previously he plays a tough guy and it’s all quite serious drama, but he’s actually got great comic timing and he’s really good at improvising.”

Ahead of bringing his brand new show Larks in Transit to the East of England Arena in June, this month ESP comedy columnist Sarah Slack spoke to musical comedy legend Bill Bailey to discuss Idris Elba, Black Books the musical, and the gradual decline of trouser presses... Thanks for taking the time out to chat to ESP – you’ve previously starred in bird watching shows so was this the inspiration behind the name of your new tour Larks in Transit? “It’s a passing reference to birds in flight, but the title refers more to the Dickensian definition of larks as fun. It’s all about the fun of travel and the situations that have happened to me in the last few years of doing comedy.”

I saw you were on Room 101 recently where you fought your case against taramasalata, but did you have any other suggestions that didn’t make it to air? I know time’s a big healer but did Chris de Burgh get a mention?! “Well it seems harsh to put him in there twice, as he went in there last time I was on Room 101 when Paul Merton was hosting. On the old episode they tried to get a Chris de Burgh ‘sound-a-likie’ who’d played him on Stars in Their Eyes, but suddenly he had an agent who said that would limit him as an artist!”

Some of my favourite moments of your past shows are the musical numbers, so can you tell us a bit more about the songs you’ve got lined up? “There’s a song I play on a cigar box guitar, which has been fashioned from an old Bible and it makes a wonderful sound, so I sing a song about duelling with the devil similar to ‘The Devil Went Down to Georgia’, which is something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Many fans will know this is not the first time you’ve acted before, as you also played Bernard’s assistant Manny in one of my favourite shows, Black Books. Has a re-hash of Black Books ever been considered? “Not as far as I know, but it was certainly very good fun to work on. Dylan Moran now writes a lot and he still performs stand-up around the world, and Tamsin Greig is doing a lot of acting, so we’re all doing our own thing. We have talked about doing a musical one day, which would be hilarious, but not for the foreseeable future...”

11 One of my favourite parts of the Part Troll DVD is an extra feature, which you described as the ‘2004 mainland UK census of tea, coffee and trouser presses’. Are you planning an update for 2018? “I always like making DVD extras, and after years of touring around everywhere you would go to hotels and find the tea and coffee making facilities, so I ended up comparing and contrasting them everywhere I went. “Trouser presses have started to disappear from hotel rooms now, so maybe there’s a sociological reason to do with a decline in public standards, or whether the workplace has become more casual so people don’t need to have their trousers pressed anymore!” Finally, I’m always interested in ‘comedian’s comedians’ and what sort of acts comics watch when they’re not touring themselves. Do you watch a lot of comedy, and if so who are your favourite acts? “I like to watch American comedians like Andy Kindler, who does comedy about comedy and the tropes of doing stand-up, and if you’re a comic you really understand it. I also like watching Patton Oswalt and Norm MacDonald, who’s a very funny and dry storyteller. I’ve noticed there’s a completely different approach to comedy in America though, as comedians get a standing ovation at the beginning when they haven’t even told a joke – come on you slackers, you’ve got to earn it!”

I think once I got out there though, I would have coped,” Shephard told me.

Ever since the age of around 11, I have always wanted to work in the media. I know people in their mid-30s who still have no idea what they want to do work-wise. That is not a criticism, some people work out their dream job at different times in their lives.

I was Liam Shephard fascinated to learn of players who could’ve taken a completely different career path to the one they took. Defender Liam Shephard has always been intrigued by the Army. As a teenager, it was a career that was definitely considered; certainly as a back-up plan should he not

make it in the game. “I always wanted to be a footballer and my plan was to make it, but I remember my parents saying to me, ‘what are you going to do if you don’t make it’ and my reply was always the military. “I think that definitely scared my mum! She said ‘you better make it as a footballer’. I think she was worried about me potentially going out there to fight. My father actually thought about signing up to the Army, but then I was born and it kind of shelved those plans. My great grandfather fought in the World War and my step grandfather fought in Northern Ireland so there is a past history in the military in my family. “I think there are similarities in terms of the camaraderie between football and the Army. I have always been a leader growing up. I

I always wondered how they coped with being in the Army, how would it affect them mentally as well as physically. The mannerisms of him, the standards he set in life, I could relate to it. Even the small things like never being late, that is me all over. I won’t leave the house until I make the bed, being tidy, I find myself quite similar in that respect.

Bourne Festival is back for its 16th year! The event will be held on the Wellhead Field in Bourne from June 1 – 3. Brought to you by Bourne Round Table they are attempting a very local flavour to the whole 3 day event. They will be showcasing the usual array (100 barrels) of local ales and ciders. By the term local they mean that they are sourcing the beer from South Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire. In addition they are introducing some of the American hoppy ales which are becoming more and more popular!

Also, the stage will be occupied by of lots of local, home grown talent. All of the bands and acts are from the local area this year. The Friday headline act is The Brays, supported by Halo. The music starts at 7.15pm The Saturday live music starts at midday and features headline act Clutching At Straws, supported by Dirty Rumour, Cover it Up, Pennyless and Brothers Grim. The Sunday also starts at midday and the headliner is Nick Corney & The Buzzrats, supported by Afterlife, Risky Trick, The Spirit and Steve Francis. To make sure all ages are catered for, other attractions include Roger Tuby’s Funfair, craft stalls, trade stalls, food stands, circus workshops and a wandering magician! There are more artists yet to be announced and as with all Round Table events, profits made from the Festival will go to local charities. Bourne Festival is Back

Kerry Devine releases new album My colleague on ESP, photographer Mike Harris has been enthusing about a great time he had at the Wicken Fen arts event near Ely in early April. It was described as an immersive audio and visual art installation inspired by the landscape and people of the Fens. One of the music artists featured at Wicken Fen was Kerry Devine who showcased her debut album Away From Mountains as part of the event which through photography, film, sound and art the project focused on the female legacy of the Fens, from the dark past of witch hunts that took place in isolated communities, to the role of women in agriculture and those pushing for change in a conservative rural area. Songs from the album, which is released on May 11, were recorded live in the stillness of night in an empty Fotheringhay Church near Oundle giving the album a haunting quality. To further promote Away From Mountains Kerry is doing a series of gigs finishing here in Peterborough on Saturday May 19. The gig takes place at Metal Culture which is situated in the Chaffeurs Cottage behind the Town Hall. Tickets are available from www.kerrydevine.org.

Idolising Nova To Support The Vamps

We’ve been telling you about exciting originals band Idolising Nova for quite a while now and I’m pleased to see the guys seem to be going from strength to strength with the latest news being a top support slot. The band will be supporting The Vamps on their sell out Night And Day Tour in Amsterdam, Paris & Cologne this month! Jack from the band told ESP – "We are so excited to play these shows with The Vamps. We're just three lads from Peterborough who play music in their spare time, so being given an opportunity like this is just crazy!" Band Spotlight:

We Love To Boogie To T.Rextacy

Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan's special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs, the band had a string of huge hits throughout the 1970s including I Love to Boogie, Telegram Sam, Jeepster and 20th Century Boy. And of course, a selection of Marc’s many compositions were the basis for the very successful Billy Elliot movie. On Saturday May 12 the band, which has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’ play the Stamford Corn Exchange. T.Rextasy have now been performing around the world for over 20 years, a career that ironically outlives Marc’s very own T.Rex. The band is now accepted as the world’s only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan & T.Rex, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc Bolan’s family, estate, original ex-members of T.Rex, and Bolan’s catalogue management. Many suggest that had he lived, Marc would’ve been one of the greatest but despite his relatively short life he still achieves the status of Rock Icon. T.Rextasy have visited the area before and have always provided a solid rock’n’roll concert for all ages. Look Out For Dirty Days

I’m pleased to see that aside from our brilliant covers band scene in the city we’re seeing more originals bands too. Dirty Days are a new upcoming original rock band in Peterborough and ESP will have more on them soon but don’t miss their gig dates in May. Three young lads, two of which are at university, have come together to form an incredible original rock trio who I’m told bring some real energy to every show they perform. You can catch them locally on Friday May 18 at Mama Liz's Stamford and on Saturday May 26 Dirty Days will be supporting Old School Reasons alongside A Story To Tell and The Lucky Lessons at The Met Lounge in Peterborough. Next month they’ll be appearing at The Ostrich Inn with support from Prey Drive and Soviet Films on June 22. They have two singles released on Spotify, Itunes and many other music sites. The Money Shot

They only formed last year, but The Money Shot has taken Peterborough’s pubs, clubs and parties by storm with eclectic set lists and songs that you wouldn’t expect to see performed by a covers act. Although the band is relatively new to the music scene they are already followed by an enthusiastic crowd, it’s made up of members who’ve served their time on stage as part of many other outfits around the city. The Money Shot is made up of Peter Rollason (lead vocals), Phil Smith (guitar, backing vocals), Mike Stix Holland (drums) and Ben Hackney-Williams (bass, backing vocals). Their set list contains rock, pop, indie, soul and more, and it’s not just an original approach they take in song choice either, as the list also gives something out of the ordinary. This can be risky so why? “It’s not that we’re trying to exclusively play songs that other bands don’t,” explained frontman, Peter. “There are some numbers that you’ve heard in local bands before, but there are a lot of fan favourites that nobody touches for one reason or another. “We’re just taking on whatever songs that we think will be fun to play, whether it’s Queen’s Radio Gaga or Bad Romance by Lady Gaga – I love them both and the crowds

have done so far, too.” At gigs they seem to like something out of the ordinary recalling one private party having taken place in an inflatable pub full of a crowd dressed as superheroes! “That was a really fun one,” bassist Ben told ESP. “To be playing music that you love with Rogue from the X-men and about three Batmans – Batmen? – staring at you is definitely something to take off the bucket list.” And, as with most bands pubs are where they perfect their act and Ben told us: “We have to give a shout out to Simon at The Ostrich as well, as he’s been not only good to us but to Peterborough in general, and the crowd there always end up jumping around to songs early doors.” To find out if The Money Shot are playing near you any time soon, head to the ESP Gig Guide or take a look at facebook.com/ BandTheMoneyShot, or for any enquiries on availability email bandthemoneyshot@gmail.com for more information.
