APPRENTICESHIPS OPEN DAY Exam season is in full swing and students across the city are starting to think – What’s Next? Staying in full time education may not be what all teenagers want so it’s well worth considering Apprenticeships and you can find out more at a special open day coming up on Thursday June 13. Apprenticeships are a great way to combine further study with the world of work. Unlike traditional educational routes Apprenticeships help to build work experience and gain industry qualifications without the debts of university or college. Entry requirements differ depending on the Apprenticeship course and employer but as a guide Apprentices require 4 GCSE’s at minimum grade C or equivalent so it’s important students concentrate on their exams. If you are looking for a vacancy in Peterborough you can visit the newly updated PRC website where you can find useful guides and the latest vacancies from local employers who are supported by PRC. Current vacancies include Hilton Foods, Hobart UK, Gathercole Race Engines, Nene Park Trust and East of England Arena. On Thursday May 16 it’s Peterloo by Director Mike Leigh starring Rory Kinnear, Maxine Peake and Neil Bell in an epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter's Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. Then it’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on May 23, followed by Keira Knightley and Dominic West in Collette on May 30. 6

Returning to school for one more term after their top A level grades, the group learns about life, love and literature from their unusual English teacher, in preparation for university entrance exams. Staff rivalries, obsessions with Oxbridge, adolescent emotions, and a very young new supply teacher provoke a riot in an otherwise uniform Grammar. Dietrich: Natural Duty We’re seeing some great Peterborough talent return to the city with theatre shows and a former Stnaground College student is the latest. Jessica Mescall is now a theatre producer in London and is assistant producer on hit-show Dietrich: Natural Duty which is coming to the Key Theatre this month as part of its UK tour. The show has been a huge success in the past year having played in London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, New York, Amsterdam and Australia. Fall in love again with Hollywood icon Marlene Dietrich in this critically acclaimed one(wo)man show. It is 1942. On the battlefields of North Africa in a gold sequin gown, Marlene Dietrich takes to the stage to fight the war her way; with an irresistible mix of songs, sequins, sex and sympathy. Jessica told ESP – “I’m extremely proud to be bringing this show to The Key. I grew up there performing in Summer Schools and shows for the Key Youth Theatre, I was in the panto one year and later taught and choreographed for Kindred Drama. “Not only this, but the show confronts many social issues I’m extremely dedicated to spreading the word on; body positivity, social

stereotypes and peer pressure. These are all things I struggled with greatly during my school years and being a part of The Key Theatre gave me the purpose, free spirit and resilience that I still carry with me now – I owe a lot to that place so can’t wait to go back with a successful project of my own!” Born in Berlin in 1901, Marie Magdalene ‘Marlene’ Dietrich soon became a Hollywood legend and the most famous German woman in the world. However, when World War II was declared, she was forced to choose between the country that she loved and what she knew was right. Renouncing her German citizenship, Dietrich joined the American Army and fought against her homeland in order to free her people from Hitler. Don’t miss this spectacular mixture of theatre, drag and cabaret at the Key Theatre on Monday May 13. Tickets are £16.50 on 01733 207239. www.espmag.co.uk

Motown Concert Will Be Sweet It’s being billed as ‘Peterborough’s biggest ever Motown concert’ and is packed with an amazing set list of tunes and some fantastic performers. Motown’s Greatest Hits – How Sweet It Is will be at the Peterborough New Theatre on Broadway on Bank Holiday Saturday May 25. But it’s more than just the stage show – promoters TOSB have added an after show party to the night’s entertainment. Peterborough has a history of being a hotbed for soul and Motown fans so this looks set to be a great night out that will keep you dancing long after they’ve left the stage. The hugely popular tribute show has been touring and selling out at venues across the country and features slick choreography and an amazing set list performed by a talented group of performers. Well that option is covered as the moment the music stops on stage it will start in the bar – all the 60’s & 70’s soul classics that the band didn’t play. I hope people bring their best dancing shoes!” The Peterborough New Theatre is now under professional management by the national Selladoor Group who themselves are busy scheduling a packed autumn programme at the venue. All tickets for this show are being sold through ticket agencies who are part of the STAR* alliance group of agents so you can rest assured your money is safe – and if you do prefer to pay by cash then the Visitor Information Centre on Bridge Street has been reporting a steady stream of people booking for the show. Mary was supported by her mentor to apply for a Care Assistant role and to update her CV. She gained a paid position at Park House Nursing Home and was then able to move to rented accommodation. Mary’s ultimate aim is to attend more training to enable her to achieve her dream and clinch that nursing role.

It’s a great show that we know the kids will love – we can’t wait to see you there!” For more information head to www.queensgate-shopping.co.uk.

This May half term you can take the kids to visit Dr Doo-Lot’s Pop-Up Pet Shop in Queensgate! The puppet-based interactive theatrical show sounds great fun and an ideal way to keep the kids amused over the school break. Just head to Central Square in the shopping centre where Dr Doo-Lot's Pop-Up Pet Shop will run daily from May 29 - 31, from 11am-4pm. It's a busy pet shop that’s home to various animals from all around the world. They'll head off on a different exciting adventure each day, accompanied by jolly pet-shop owner Dr Doo-Lot and his helpful assistant. Children will be able to get

There’ll be some unusual looking visitors on the platform at Nene Valley Railway this month as they hold another popular ‘Steampunk’ weekend on May 11 and 12. If you’re not familiar with Steampunk yet, it’s often described as a genre of science fiction that has a historical setting. It typically features steampowered machinery rather than advanced technology and a style of design and fashion that combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features. There’s a distinct Jules Verne flavour to it! Steampunk fans will be out in force in all their amazing costumes and there’ll be plenty to browse and buy. The steam trains will be running from 10am and the Wansford station will feature Steampunk trade stands, exhibits and special events. Call 01780 784444 for more details or visit www.nvr.org.uk. If model railways are more your thing, head down to NVR on June 1 and 2 for their big model railway weekend. Bigger than last year it will feature layouts in all scales from N to G including the NVR Garden Railway. All exhibits will be based around the Wansford Station using multiple display sites.

University can’t come Quick Enough The wait is over for those who’ve criticised the city they live in because it hasn’t got an independent university. A recent announcement by Peterborough City Council confirmed that a university will be built on a 55-acre site off Bishop’s Road on the Embankment. And it won’t be long before it’s operational either, with spaces available for 2,000 students by 2022. Most of these students will hopefully be our very own young people and this should mean homegrown talent remains in Peterborough to serve businesses and organisations on their doorstep. Establishing a university is the single biggest thing we can do to nurture our own talent – and it’s also one of the best things we can do to boost the city’s economy. Having a fully-fledged

Peterborough New Theatre has named its lounge the Boizot Lounge in memory of the man we all have to thank for saving the then Odeon Cinema in 1996 because of his entrepreneurial vision to open a theatre in its place. Staunch Peterborian and Pizza Express founder Peter Boizot spent more than £9m transforming the cinema into the Broadway Theatre and the rest is history. The renaming of the lounge celebrates Peter’s invaluable contribution to the venue and to our city. I couldn’t think of a more fitting way to honour a man who I

university we can call our own has been a long time coming. As for the doubters who will invariably continue to moan about the city they live in, you’ll be hard pressed to find another university city with, among other good things: • Affordable housing • Low crime • Reasonable council tax rates • Acres of green spaces • Excellent transport links • A growing visitor economy • A beautiful art deco lido • A stunning cathedral • A Five Guys (yum) And more importantly a popular, long-established monthly magazine with a talented columnist of 23 years. If there’s a better place to live in the eastern region then send me a postcard.

Fitting Tribute To Peter

City Mural is a Gem I just had to mention the huge mural painting of Peterborough some 20 years ago that’s hanging from a wall in the new city council office at Sand Martin House. It’s a belter and depicts some of the main buildings, attractions and personalities that mean something to us Peterborians. It was painted by local artist Gillian Dolby and presented to a former Mayor. Gillian’s colourful and detailed style derived from an earlier career as a children’s book illustrator, which she still does. Sand Martin House is a fusion of old (Engine Shed) and new and the mural is the perfect accompaniment to where the two buildings transition into one another. And if you haven’t seen it yet, the iconic stone mural that once covered the side of Bridge House sits proudly in its new home against the multi-storey car park at the Fletton Quays development.

Food and Drink Festival heads to Grimsthorpe Castle Foodies – it’s time to get excited as The Great British Food Festival is coming to Lincolnshire! For the first time this celebration of fabulous food will be held in the grounds of the lovely Grimsthorpe Castle, near Bourne, over the weekend of June 15 and 16. There’ll be over 75 different traders and Dan Maycock, one of the organisers told ESP – “We have got a great mix of local produce and best of British, coming from further afield. On the hot food front you will be able to try anything from traditional hog roast to international dishes, so hopefully something for all tastes!” Along with wonderful food and drink there’ll be a marquee for fantastic chef demos, foodie talks, men vs. food competitions and live music. The Chef Demo stage is headlined each day by Great British Bake Off Star, Howard Middleton who’ll be sharing some tips on centre stage and said – “I love doing these festivals and I can’t wait to see Grimsthorpe Castle, don’t forget to bring your cakes along for me to judge in the cake off!” Take a blanket and sit out for the day enjoying great food and drink, live music and beautiful surroundings. The perfect recipe for a fun, foodie day out for the whole family. For tickets head to www.greatbritishfoodfestival.com.

Breakfast at the Lightbox Café We love to see some great independents in the mix of Peterborough’s dining scene and the Lightbox Café on Bridge Street has certainly made its mark – but now it’s time for a few changes. The café now has new daytime opening hours offering breakfast from 8.30am Monday to Friday and from 9am on Saturdays and 9.30am on Sundays. You can grab a takeaway tea or coffee and takeaway breakfast baps and sandwiches all made freshly for you! A full eat in brunch menu will start at 9.30am. Another change is that the Lightbox is no longer operating as a Friday/Saturday night bar. Instead, they’re becoming an events and functions venue so you can now book your private party or corporate event any evening of the week, including Friday and Saturday nights! Their popular Pop Up Chef events will continue with the next being a BBQ Nights Pop Up on Friday May 17. We went along to the Greek night by the team form Bread Meat Cheese and we can thoroughly recommend it.

Festy

Tents from Regatta

Essentials If you’re heading off to party in a field it’ll be an experience of a lifetime but to get the best out of it you need to pack some essentials. Springfields Outlet in Spalding is a great place to head for most of what you need and at outlet prices from leading brands. Festival tickets aren’t cheap so here’s a chance to save some cash so you’ll have more to spend on drinks and noodles!

Dancing Shoes

Regatta

Base Camp For tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, camping equipment and leisurewear head to Mountain Warehouse, Regatta and Sports Direct.

Joules

Trainers and wellies are essential when you’re set to party in a field. Skechers stock D’lites, cool retro style trainer or there’s Sports Direct and the Joules outlet is great for those festival staples – wellies!

Joules

Shower Proof Plan for rain and you’ll be safe! Take a lightweight showerproof jacket you can roll up in your bag. Go bright with Joules or head to Mountain Warehouse or Regatta outlets at Springfields.

Survival Kit Late nights, sun/rain and hangovers will play havoc so to keep looking refreshed and healthy head to The Cosmetics Company Store, Body Shop and Holland Barrett at Springfields Outlet for all your cosmetics, beauty products, tanning products, travel toiletries, vitamins and sun tan lotion.

Phil Adlam “My advice would be to plan for the worst weather you can possibly imagine. That way you won’t be shocked. “At festivals, often acts you want to see clash, so plan who you want to see in advance, who’s likely to be accessible at future tours in the country etc. Also, if you think a band have the potential to split up, see them – imagine if I’d decided not to see Oasis!”

For hoodies, shorts, vests, T-shirts, the all important waterproofs and everything else to get the festy look head to Jack Wills, Joules, White Stuff, Fat Face and Gap. For leisurewear head to Sports Direct.

Jack Wills

“Wet wipes, lots of wet wipes! I stayed at V2009 in August and it was freezing at night and boiling during the day. Check the weather and prepare for everything. It won’t be clean, it won’t be tidy but there will be a point where you’re singing your fave song with 20,000 other people and it all makes sense!”

ESP’s Posh columnist

Look Good

Regatta

Chris Brudenell ESP Photographer

Andrew James ESP photographer “Attending a festival should definitely be on someone’s bucket list, but it’s very much like Marmite, you'll either love or hate the experience. “Expect to pay inflated prices for both food and drink, even water! Take some essentials with you if the festival allows. “Keep all valuables on you at all times, securely, establish your bearings and location and monitor your drinks. “Take your own toilet roll and if you want to get some guaranteed sleep later, ear plugs! Plus, if you haven't pitched your tent before, do a trial run beforehand.”

Stage your own festival at home If heading to a festival is just too much hassle, too expensive or you’re unlucky when it comes to the scramble for tickets why not bring the festy vibe to your own back garden? With many of the festivals such as Glastonbury being televised, get your mates over, get the bunting, beanbags and lanterns out and relax knowing you have your own loo you won’t have to queue for! There are loads of great bits and pieces at Springfields Outlet in Spalding and centres such as Van Hage in Peterborough which you can use to transform your space into a fully fledged festival zone that’s ticket free. Just remember to be mindful of the neighbours!

Festival

Fashion Festival season is upon us and whether you’re starting early this May or venturing out later over the summer to get messy in a field somewhere you need to get the look. Embrace your inner rock star or hippy chick and go for it. It doesn’t matter if you prefer to get noticed in neon, go casual in camo or celebrate the summer of love with tie-dye – you’ll definitely need denim, wellies and layers! In the early part of festival season be prepared for chilly nights (and rainy ones – Glastonbury you know we mean you!) and in the height of summer don’t forget the festival essential – a hat! It keeps the sun/rain off and hides unkempt hair. ESP Top Tip: Don’t take your best stuff, anything too expensive or something you can’t live without – there’s a big chance it’ll get lost/ruined/stained – keep your festival wardrobe simple and cheap. Now, let’s go and party… see you at the front!

Festival

survival GUIDE Festival season kicks off this month with the likes of Radio One’s Big Weekend and dozens more encouraging us to take to the fields in our wellies with a plastic pint glass and jig about in all weathers to all kinds of music. Who better to ask for festival advice than ESP’s former music columnist and seasoned festival-goer Andy Slater…

Andy Slater Well hello, it’s been a while! The Ed emailed me and asked – “Are you still travelling the length and breadth of the country festivalling?” Pretty much ‘yes’ was the answer. “Are big ones better than little ones?” “Depends what takes your fancy,” I said. So I had better explain from my point of view… OK, big festivals, think Glastonbury, Download, Reading, the heavy weights – these are the huge festivals with upward of 70,000 punters, usually sponsored and very corporate. The small ones can be anything from 200 to 10,000 punters. In fact if you limit your ticket sales to 499 it can be classed as a private gathering and escapes lots of the rules and regulations and as such have lower costs. At the big festivals you get the big names, the huge acts that are touring that summer. This is good if there are a few

24 www.espmag.co.uk

acts to tick off your must-see list. Once in a lifetime opportunities that you’ve been dying to see, that’s where you’ll probably get to see them. One thing to bear in mind with so many stages and stars though, is that you get clashes and you may not see one act because you’re a mile away watching someone else you wanted to see. Smaller festivals tend to have the less well known acts and maybe one or two stars of a lesser luminosity. They have a couple of stages usually within 400 metres of each other. You don’t miss much at all. You also see lots of up and coming bands and solo performers that are usually camped up in the same field as you and will happily share a beer with you. The stage and light shows at large festies are incredible; it’s an aural and visual sensory treat. The sound is usually immense too, especially if one of your must sees is on form. You won’t get the same at a small festival but you will be up close and within spitting distance of the performers. There are no pit barriers between you and the stage – you can see their nasal hair… and feel their spittle! That’s either a positive or a negative depending how churlish you are! I don’t like crowds, they get on my nerves, the thing about small festivals is that the guys you were talking to Friday evening, you will bump into again on Saturday and Sunday. At large festivals everyone is a passing conversation never to be had again. That again can be a blessing or a missed friendship. One huge advantage of the smaller

festival is safety and security. It’s a sad world we live in when tent robbing is rife at larger festivals. Yes it may happen at a smaller one, especially if it’s based in or on the edge of a town, but nothing like the scale of larger ones. You think you’re being wise by stuffing your wallet and phone under your pillow when you go to bed but at one festival I was at last year they were burning holes in tents above people’s sleeping heads to get at the cash without entering the tent. Not nice, stupidly dangerous and a festival ruining experience. It rarely happens at small festivals. Just something to think about when you choose where you are going this summer. The reality is most festivals are safe, just some safer than others and big or small it’s a personal choice. I prefer those with no more than 5k punters… less queues for the beer and the bogs! How do you find them? Well it’s a lot easier than it once was with the advent of social media. My pal Paul Phillips runs a great Facebook page called Festival Flyers. It’s an open forum for anyone to post flyers for their festival. Paul also diarises them all and on one tab you click Files, Festival Calendar and off you go. Paul’s done a fabulous job collating the info and you’ll find some little gems in there. So that’s it… don’t forget your tickets, cash, beer, baby wipes, wellies and water proofs. Take plenty of warm clothes too and make sure you have the time of your life… it’s not a rehearsal! Andy Slater Read more on www.espmag.co.uk.

paparazzi Caught in the act? SUN, BEERS AND GREAT TUNES The sunny Easter weekend brought everyone out for some good times and good vibes at the local bars and our photographer Mike Harris was there to capture you in the act of having a great time. The beer festival at Charters was as popular as ever and the beer garden and the boat were packed out over the weekend. At the Burghley Club the One Eyed Cats had everyone up and enjoying the tunes with their usual lively set and the music was also rocking The Ploughman in Werrington where Dirty Rumour were keeping everyone entertained. BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT

Get set to be amazed by more hilariously rubbish pub acts, some unexpectedly brilliant performers and Alesha Dixon’s earrings – yes Britain’s Got Talent is back (with Ant) and ESP’s Sarah Tempest has settled on the sofa to see what the latest series has in store…

T

hirteen may be unlucky for some, but not it seems for Simon Cowell and his fellow judges David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Sarah Tempest Dixon, as the 13th series of Britain’s Got Talent is underway and promises to be BGT’s most entertaining series yet with a mind reading dog (yes, really!), an unusual harpist and many more amazing acts. It also promises one of the most dangerous acts to date with an escapologist who decides that it’s not enough to suspend himself upside down in a straight jacket, but ramps it up by setting himself on fire. Let’s hope it’s not unlucky 13 for that particular act. Don’t try this at home kids! Amanda Holden is particularly feeling the superstitious vibes: “Thirteen… unlucky for some! I do have a problem with 13; Simon said we should just call it our 14th series or 13.5! I am a bit superstitious, I won’t walk under ladders and I always salute magpies, I say, ‘Hello Mr Magpie, how’s your wife?’ but I do it going down the street pretending I am flicking my hair and not saluting a bird, I don’t want people to think I am mad!”

DID YOU KNOW WE DID THIS?

But it’s not all about bad luck for series number 13 as it also sees the whole team back together again with host Ant rejoining his presenting partner Dec after his lengthy sabbatical for rehab and recovery following his much publicised drink driving accident. But if Ant was feeling nervous about his return to the spotlight he needn’t have, as he was welcomed back warmly by the public and his colleagues alike. Amanda gushed – “Oh, this year has been so lovely! The live shows were not the same without him. We are the best team, we get on so well, we can take the Mickey out of each other, we support each other and there’s a natural chemistry between us all that you can’t make happen with other panels.” And David agrees – “It was lovely to see when they stepped back on the stage together in London how excited people were to see them together. It was really emotional and I was pleased for them. It was just how it always was.” The acts are once again competing for a £250,000 cash prize and the opportunity to perform at the Royal Variety Performance and, with such a coveted prize up for grabs, the judges are expecting the talent to bring something special to the stage. “I think the brilliant thing about this show is any kind of act can win but I do believe that this year it’s

time for a singer to win,” says Alesha. “I think it’s time to bring that back. We presume that the singers are for The X Factor but actually I think a traditional singer would be good. We got our wish last year with a comic winning the show so the only other thing to win would be something we have never seen before but they are going to need to be outstanding.” As a former Strictly Come Dancing judge, Alesha always has an eye out for an outstanding dance act – “I’m always rooting for dancers to come out and be better than what we have found before. We’ve got to a point with dancers now that unless you’re brilliant we get a bit bored, it’s stuff we’ve seen before. As a fan of dance that can be frustrating. For the audience to enjoy a dance act they have to come with something they haven’t seen before.” Whether this series will uncover the next Paul Potts, Diversity, Lost Voice Guy or a voice to rival unlikely superstar Susan Boyle, remains to be seen. But whatever happens, let’s hope this year’s contestants have all remembered to bring their lucky rabbit’s foot. Catch Britain’s Got Talent Saturday nights on ITV1.

AVENGERS – ENDGAME (12A) Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth Directors: The Russo Brothers

M

arvel have powerfully completed their Infinity saga in a truly exhilarating fashion – firing out an emotionally impactful end to the Avengers four-part story. There’s so much packed into the three hours that you could find it quite ‘dizzying’ unless you’re a superhero ‘fanboy’ – but when it threatens to sometimes go off the rails, directors the Russo Brothers reign it back in to keep it thundering on course. Five years after the devastating events of Infinity War the world is in ruins. With half the world’s population disappearing – known as The Vanished – society is struggling to pick itself up with houses abandoned and streets full of waste. Iron-Man (Robert Downey Jr) has settled into a quite life with wife Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and their now four-year-old daughter – but is still silently devastated after seeing Tom Holland’s Spidey crumble before his very eyes. Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, with the aid of Captain America (Chris Evans) leads what is left of the Avengers – predominantly War Machine (Don Cheadle), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) – who are being stretched across the globe to fight crime. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) also pops in to lend a helping hand when she can too. But when Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) gets thrown out of the Quantum Realm that he’s been stuck in since the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp five years ago (which only felt like a few hours to him) the theory of time travel is explored, and when it is deemed possible they could reverse

the effects of Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) decimation, the Avengers must assemble once more. This means convincing Stark to aid Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner – who’s now settled for a Banner/Hulk hybrid of himself with moments of noteworthy comedic-relief – helping Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to ditch his drunken slumber, and stopping Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye killing every bad guy in sight. Because for ‘course correction’ to make sure nobody dies, the team must go back in time to get all six Infinity Stones before they get into Thanos’ glove. And that sends the crew across multiple timelines that cover Avengers Assemble, the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Winter Soldier, Infinity War – and even arguably the runt of the MCU litter, Thor: The Dark World. Before that, loose-ends galore are tied up with special cameos from the likes of Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Korg (Taika Waititi) from Thor: Ragnarok, perished bad guys such as Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Crossbones (Frank Grillo) and Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), as well as fan favourite appearances from Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, Rene Russo’s Frigga and Tilda Swinton’s The Ancient One, which adds sensational continuity – and plenty of fan service to boot. And what takes it above Infinity War – and makes this potentially the greatest pound-forpound best film ever in the MCU – is the emotional edge that easily provides seven or eight potential ‘lump in throat’ moments that

will push the tear ducts of even the most ‘hardy’ of comic-book fans to the limit. Tony Stark has a seventies-set altercation with his father Howard (John Slattery), Steve Rogers crosses paths with his one and only true love Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), and as for the rest… that’s well inside true spoiler territory. Deaths? You’ll have to wait and see. And this sets us up for the enthralling finale, which is arguably one of the best final thirty minutes to any blockbuster. Ever. Even up there with the likes of Star Wars and other comparable epic superhero or sci-fi operas of the past several generations. If you’re nit-picking you could argue ‘casual’ cinema-goers may get a little perplexed with the bloated plot in the middle third if not compliant with Marvel material – and on a personal level ‘true’ Hulk (my favourite Marvel superhero) smashing was a little on the light side. For 90 per cent of the time though, it’s hard to pick a flaw with what Anthony and Joe Russo achieved here with so much going on, and so for that reason minor problems – which you could deduct a half mark off for – are receiving a free pass here. But the main two words that will be taken from your Avengers: Endgame experience are: emotion and impact. Because if you’re invested in the characters then it could well hit you more than a Thor-hammer blow, Cap Shield or Hulk smash to the face. And when the dust settles you’ll be pleased you did.

Splash and Raise Cash – Enter the Dragon Now! There’s still time for you to sign up and take on the ESP Motley Crew as we endeavour to stay afloat and retain some dignity in the Peterborough Dragon Boat Race!

E

SP magazine is celebrating 20 years in print so we’re also hoping to celebrate with a better ranking in this year’s event at the Rowing Lake! Dozens of other challengers have already signed up and on Saturday June 8 we’ll all be dressed ridiculously, paddling furiously and…. laughing loudly. This event really is great fun and raises vital funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. In the past it’s seen teams use it to mark 50th birthday celebrations, remember loved ones, bring sports teams together or provide the perfect team building event for staff. You don’t need any experience or to be super fit, just up for a laugh with a little competitive spirit! It’s perfectly organised by Gable Events who provide all the kit and advice and dozens of teams have already signed up including main sponsors IKEA so why

not join in the fun? Rawlinsons accountants has recently rebranded to Baldwins and Associate Director Richard Monkhouse says it’s an unmissable event and great way to promote the new name – “Rawlinsons has entered a Dragon Boat team for a number of years now, it’s a fantastic day out and a great team-building event. Following our rebrand to Baldwins, the event will also give us the opportunity to raise awareness of the Baldwins name whilst networking with other local businesses in a more social environment.” Jessica Hutchinson from Buckles Law said – “We’re Dragon Boat Festival veterans and cannot say enough good things about it. There’s a great spirit to the occasion and the atmosphere is always fantastic. It’s so nice to see everyone support each other because, ultimately, we’re all there for the same purpose – raising as much money as we can for Thorpe Hall Hospice, an incredible cause.” Jason Mendrik Marketing Executive at Hunt & Coombs Solicitors agrees – “The event creates a buzz around the office and provides a fantastic opportunity for the staff to work as a team outside of work.” Sara Bazeley Brand, Communications & PR Manager at Whirlpool Corporation added – “Taking part in the Dragon Boat Festival is a fun

day out that our colleagues look forward to every year. As a large employer in the Peterborough area, we know Sue Ryder is a charity that has supported many of our colleagues' friends and family, and the Dragon Boat Festival provides us with the opportunity to not only to raise much needed funds for them to continue their essential support, but it gives our colleagues a chance to give back to the community whilst having a great day out.” There’ll be loads of bankside fun on the day too so even if you can’t take part, come and join us and watch the racing throughout the day. Nilesh Patel, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall said – "This is one of the flagship fundraising events for our hospice and the day shows everyone what a big-hearted community Peterborough is to be part of. And it's a great day out on the water, showcasing the passion and endurance of local people and organisations all topped off with some great river side entertainment for spectators. "Last year was record-breaking, raising an incredible £35,000 so our Sue Ryder nurses, care staff and support teams can be there for local families when it matters,” said Nilesh. “We'd love to smash that total this year so our hospice can give more care to more people." Van Hage opens Mini Farm It’s quite rare to find something to do with the family these days that’s absolutely free...

It was a breath of fresh air to hear that Van Hage at Eye had created a mini farmyard which, yep, doesn’t cost a penny to attend. Alongside numerous excited families, I attended the opening day on behalf of ESP

Magazine – and you can check it out too as it’s here to stay! Head through the popular garden centre (off the Eye roundabout on the Paston Parkway/Perkins Parkway), then through the garden and you’ll find a wide range of adorable animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, a gorgeous peacock, pigs, chickens, sheep and an aviary. Van Hage opened in February 2010 at the heart of the PE1 shopping centre and stages numerous popular events throughout the year. It’s great to have this new mini farm as a permanent fixture – as I’m sure the many attendees I saw during my visit would agree. I spoke to the manager, Luke Hopkins, who told me “This is just phase one.. It’s going to get bigger and better but will remain a free event. “The animals are on strict diets so not everyone can feed them – however, we do hold competitions allowing people to win the chance to. We’ve also held competitions at schools to help name all of the animals. We want the community to be a big part in all of this.” Van Hage have also unveiled a new Caribbean Djibo Art area by Roland Burt, who’s created stunning pieces with a unique blend of Yorkshire, African and Caribbean

influence. Roland doesn’t just have a plethora of paintings and murals but he also hosts many educational workshops, working closely with local schools and charities in the area. Take a look at Roland’s work here: www.djiboart.co.uk. For more details (including opening times) visit www.vanhage.co.uk. Mikey Clarke

peterborouGh GetS A ‘SpA world’ As a member of the David Lloyd Club in Peterborough, you can imagine my delight when I heard the spa was going under a major new revamp and being taken over by PURE Spa & Beauty. The refurb has just been completed, and there are now five spa treatment rooms, many of which have double rooms so you can enjoy a treatment alongside someone else! Making it the ideal place to go with your mate, your partner or your mum – or even on a hen do. Step it out May is officially National Walking Month, and with the weather getting better there’s no excuse not to take part! I find walking the absolute best way to keep my health and wellbeing in check. My favourite places to walk are the Rowing Lake at Thorpe Meadows, down to the Posh ground before a home game, and around the Cathedral Precincts. That’s just a few of them! It helps us all reach that magic number of 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Slimming World Two Peterborough women who’ve changed their own lives with Slimming World are now hoping to help others in the city do the same.

T

hey’re running groups in Netherton and Dickens Street and are keen to share their stories and experiences. The latest government figures reveal that around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. 62.5% of Peterborough’s population is now overweight or obese and Sammie Todd and Holly Nickel are planning to play their part in helping others transform their lives. Sammie Todd, 52, of South Bretton, Peterborough joined her local Slimming World group and within a year, dropped from a size 24 to a size 10 with a jaw-dropping loss of 7st 9.5lbs. The mum-of-four and grandmother of three said: “I was overweight all of my adult life and it really made me miss out on activities with my children and grandchildren. It wasn’t until I had cancer and I was going through to my life-saving operation that I realised I really needed to make a change to my life to help prevent myself from Diabetes and other weightrelated illnesses.” Since losing her weight, Sammie has a new-found energy and says – “Slimming World has really given me a completely new life. I can still enjoy everything that I loved before, I still have my chocolate and my treats, but it’s really changed my relationship with food.” Holly Nikel is another slimmer who transformed her belief in herself by losing

over 2 stone and using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Holly joined her local Slimming World group in Peterborough in September 2015 and dropped from 14st 1lb to 11st 12lbs. She says – “I joined when my first son was five months old and I was planning how to introduce healthy solid food for him. My BMI during pregnancy meant a Gestational Diabetes test and desperate heartburn ensured sleep was disrupted ahead of birth. Like many people I was uncomfortable with my weight, but hadn't accepted that vulnerability fully before then. Pregnancy and having a baby was a trigger to look after myself too. I felt very fortunate as the plan was explained as it fit in with family eating with real meals.” Now, she’s trained as a consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest groupbased weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Holly adds – “Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost 2 stone without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own consultant and group. As someone who has lost weight myself I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target weight.”

Holly’s Slimming World group The African Caribbean Forum, Millennium Building, car park off Dickens Street, Peterborough, PE1 5GD every Monday at 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Call her on 07944 906 969 or email slimmingworldwithholly@gmail.com.

Well Being Karen Devine’s

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

It’s the topic that makes us blush, giggle and cringe in equal measure... Dysbiosis

One of the most natural by-product of digestion is gas, we all produce it and if we’re honest we have all let it out in places or in front of people and just wanted the ground to open up for us to jump in. ind is a big source of embarrassment for most of us, however, there are those out there that are proud of their very vocal backsides but the rest of us would prefer to parp in private!

W

I know this is a tricky topic but gas build up happens as a normal process of digestion and is harmless, however excess gas which has a bad stench to follow gives us a clue that we’re either hosting a brewery (fermenting) in there or something is rotting! Bad gas smells are a sign that we need to look at our diet and our eliminations. I’m sure you all have one of those small waste food bins and if you’ve scraped yesterday’s food in there and open it up the next day, you’ll start to get the stench of rot. This can happen in the gut when we don’t eliminate well. Our whole digestive system is about 30 feet long, our colon (bowel) is about 5 feet in length and much wider than the small intestine as this is where we hold our waste matter. We need the fibre to help brush through our wastes, without this our eliminations are very weak and waste matter can back up and cause the gas as this filth can create more unfavourable bacteria, acids and more. Lovely!

38 www.espmag.co.uk

This is an imbalance of our intestinal bacteria which can be caused by poor diet, medication, after antibiotics and other things. This imbalance can create lots of gasses as well as bloating, loose stools, constipation and more.

Eating too fast We are not Labradors, but many people eat like one, they gulp the food so quickly that it’s not even chewed. I see this many a time during colonic sessions whereby whole pieces of food are coming through the waste tube. This should not be seen (the odd bit of sweetcorn maybe) but not whole pieces of meat or kale! Chewing starts the breakdown of our foods, learn to slow down as you take in so much air if you’re gulping and chatting at the same time.

Stress

Diet What you’re eating can affect the amount of gas being produced. For instance, you may have increased your fibre and find that you’re now tooting like the Philharmonic Orchestra which can be uncomfortable – and downright embarrassing. Beans, pulses and wholegrains can be troublesome so these ideally should be soaked for a few hours to help you digest them. How much animal protein are you consuming? If you look at a carnivore’s digestive tract it’s much smaller than ours, that’s so animal flesh is passed through quickly to stop it rotting and poisoning its system. We on the other hand have been led blindly down the ‘more is better’ alley when it comes to animal protein. Some people are eating up to 14 eggs per week, red meat, chicken etc and have noticeably whiffy gas. This is a sign it’s putrefying in the gut, so a). it needs reducing and b). you need to increase gentle fibre in the diet to help. Food intolerances can also be a sign of excess smelly wind. Dairy and gluten can be common problem foods. You may have eaten these most of your life but as we age or go through a period of stress, or after a period of illness/antibiotics these issues can arise.

When we’re under stress the body will focus on the fight or flight response and not digestion as that’s the least of its worries. This can cause incomplete digestion resulting in partially broken down protein and carbohydrates leading to excess parping.

Constipation Ideally two good bowel movements a day should be what we need if we’re eating three generous meals and a snack here and there in a day. Where does all that waste go if we’re not popping to the loo? Of course it’s stuck in the colon so emptying our bowels efficiently should be a priority. Good gentle fibre such as chia/flax seeds, apples, oats, staying hydrated, exercise, yoga – can all help get the bowel moving more efficiently.

Just to recap, a little gas is natural and harmless, but please chat to your GP if you’ve had noticeable bowel changes and excessive smelly wind. If you’d like to know more about bowel/gut health then why not join me on my local talks on this subject – I would love to have you there. In health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

Let’s Here It For The Boys… The Guys Can Now Sign Up For Race For Life! For years it’s been one for ladies only but now Race For Life in Peterborough and Stamford will see guys able to enter for the first time at the events in June. Emily Rowling, Cancer Research UK’s Peterborough Event Manager, told ESP – “Our Race for Life events have been women-only since they started, over 25 years ago. But we now feel the time is right to open them up so that everyone – women, men and children – has the chance to participate together. “To make a significant difference in the fight against cancer we need to harness as much energy and commitment as possible – so what better way than involving everyone in the community in our events.” You don’t have to be sporty to take part. You don’t need to train or compete against anyone else. All you need to do is go to the Race for Life website, pick an event, sign up and then have fun raising money in whatever way you like. It might be called ‘Race’ for Life but as an event it’s completely non-competitive (you can walk it!) and there are 5k and 10k events for people of all ages and abilities taking place in Stamford’s Burghley Park on Sunday June 2 and at Ferry Meadows in Peterborough on Sunday June 30.

If you prefer to get down and dirty there’s Pretty Muddy (great fun – the ESP team have done it and loved it) and a Pretty Muddy Kids event at Burghley in Stamford on Saturday June 1. Emily continued – “Our Race for Life events are fun, colourful, emotional and uplifting. They help people with cancer by raising money for research, including clinical trials which give patients in Peterborough access to the latest treatments. “We don’t break records – we beat cancer. The Race for Life is open to everyone so do something amazing today and join the world’s most important race.” To enter Race for Life today visit www.raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770. 42 www.espmag.co.uk

City’s Lido Pool opens this month It’ll soon be time to make a splash as Peterborough’s Lido opens for a new season this month. It must mean summer is on the way and we’re so lucky to have this beautiful Art Deco outdoor swimming pool to enjoy sunny days. It’ll open again on Saturday May 25 and includes three heated outdoor pools, a café and special events throughout the summer. This year Vivacity will be offering additional sessions such as Midnight swims, extending their early morning swim offering to include Sundays, and back by popular demand their Summer Solstice event will be held once again. It’s a school holiday staple and kids under 5 swim for free.

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

Making Memories The season has drawn to its end and at the time of writing this column, we could be celebrating or looking forward to the summer break, but when I look back at the 2018-2019 campaign, there have certainly been many highlights. We are determined as a football club to try and create lasting memories and to do that we have focussed a lot of our attention on the next wave of Peterborough United supporters and that points towards the youngsters. I’ve spoken many times about the Schools Initiative this year and we’ve clocked up over 80 visits to Primary Schools and whilst some pupils may have been to the ABAX Stadium before, a lot will have sampled a live football match for the very first time.

I remember my first ever visit to the stadium. It was with my Dad in the very early 1990s and those memories last a lifetime and it doesn’t have to be because the game was a cracker; it could be meeting a player, meeting the manager, seeing friends or laughing at the mascot. I think as time has progressed, we find the impact a mascot (and I am talking the furry kind rather than those that lead the teams out) is palpable. The amount of children that see the mascot at their school and then come to a game to meet him again is often the attraction and retaining that enthusiasm is then down to us as a club. We are fortunate to have a wonderful mascot. Putting on a costume doesn’t make you a character, it is the person that creates that persona and at Posh, I believe we have the best in the business. Peter Burrow must hi-five hundreds of children on a match day and at schools, he’s like a member of One Direction. That impact is crucial. We are determined to keep that going. We want to build our fan base. Results help, of course they do, but it’s the overall experience that often encourages repeat business. Speaking of enthusiasm, we are delighted that more girls and women are enjoying coming to watch us in action.

On May 26, our successful ladies team will entertain Solihull Moors at the ABAX Stadium. This fixture is just a couple of weeks ahead of the Women’s World Cup in France. The women’s game has grown massively and our ladies team have enjoyed four promotions and more silverware in cup competitions since forming. We really hope that we can get a big crowd for this game. It kicks-off at 7pm and tickets are available at www.theposhtickets.com. The Motorpoint Stand will be open for supporters and we would love to get in excess of 2,000 people there so spread the word, tell your friends and let’s support our ladies in action. Enjoy the summer!

DID YOU KNOW WE DID THIS?

Mixology at Red Room on Broadway bring everyone’s favourite Austrian Filter House ambassador to the city - the iconic Artwork on Friday May 31. His productions have spanned four decades as one-third of dubstep supergroup ‘Magnetic Man’ with Skream & Benga and was responsible not only for one of the biggest tracks of 2016 with Let Go Of This Acid but one of UK garage’s biggest hits. If you’ve been lucky enough to experience Artwork before you’ll know how incredible his genre spanning, energetic sets are. Whether its techno, disco, house and everything leftfield or in between you can be sure that you’ll be absolutely having it on the floor. Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

Keith says...

Stamford Gig for Eddi Reader

I’m not naming names but I’ve been told that a local musician has had two of his guitars stolen. The member of a popular Peterborough band has had his vintage 70s Fender Bass guitars taken, which is a pretty devastating loss for any musician in more ways than one. If you have any information or knowledge of the whereabouts of these instruments then please contact me at ESP. My email address is keith.dalton@espmag.co.uk.

Eddi Reader is currently touring the UK and as part of the tour is visiting Stamford Arts Centre on June 15. The tour follows her highly acclaimed Cavalier album and is aimed at launching her new five song EP, Starlight, which features three brand new and unreleased songs from the Cavalier sessions plus a double A side single Starlight/My Favourite Dress. Eddi is celebrating her 40th year as a live performer, a career which started in 1978, singing on Scottish country rock tours, then appearing on worldwide festival and concert hall stages with Gang of Four and Fairground Attraction through the eighties. In fact in that long career Eddi, through her session work, has

Lexie Live @ Bob’s Local songwriter and musician, Lexie Greene, has released multiple albums over the past 10 years, and toured endlessly learning her craft by performing in pubs sometimes to an unforgiving crowd, but quickly gaining their ear, foot tap and attention. Lexie has performed at many festivals and had the honour of playing for Bob Harris, she’s been aired on 6 Music, BBC Introducing (both locally and nationally). Her music sits under the vast umbrella of Americana with her songs taking you from blues to rock to Motown to country to rock 'n' roll. Known by critics and fans for her strong song writing abilities, her vocals and stage persona have been described as 'Joplin/Ronstadt-esque' and Lexie has a relatable personality on stage. Lexie tours nationally and regionally, either solo or with her band of good friends The Indigo Blue. Her new album, Live at Bob’s Records, was recorded live in front of a small intimate audience at Bob’s Records in Lexie's home town of Whittlesey, back in November 2018. The album is released on May 3 and she returns to Bob’s for a celebratory live performance the following day (Star Wars Day!). The same evening, May 4, Lexie appears at the Voodoo Lounge in Stamford as opening artist for young guitar prodigy and blues star Chantel McGregor. A few other local shows coming up include the main stage at the International Sports and Classic Car show at the East of England Arena on May 26 (which also sees local lads Austin Gold on the line-up) and Cambridge Strawberry Fair on June 1.

The very popular Bourne Festival is back again for its 17th year. Hosted on the Wellhead field in Bourne, the festival will host the usual mix of live music, funfair, craft fair, food court and real ale and cider bars over the weekend. The event started in 2002 as part of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on a flatbed lorry and a few barrels of beer, and it has transformed over its life into a major event in Bourne’s annual calendar. The three day event has brought live music of all genres to the town, with a fun and friendly atmosphere. This year’s festival will be held between Friday June 7 and Sunday June 9. Admission is £3 a day, with a weekend pass costing just £5. Also, it’s free for children under 11. There’ll be 80 real ales and 25 ciders on tap. The band schedule is due to be announced shortly and ESP will keep you up to date with the live music as we hear it. You can also check out the latest information on www.bournefestival.com. The event is completely run by volunteers and their aim is to raise as much money for local charities as they can. The people of Bourne and district have embraced the festival and it’s attracting bigger crowds every year. The beneficiaries of the festival are all deserving local causes. The organisers run a Christmas dinner every year for OAPs who may be alone on Christmas day, along with donating to many other local causes, such as Bourne to Play, Bourne Dimensions Skate Park, local uniformed groups, and sports teams. In essence it achieves what it was founded to do. If you want a pitch at the festival or if you want to sponsor the event or volunteer over the weekend then contact the organisers on their facebook page or by emailing info@bournefestival.com.

famously harmonised with Annie Lennox and toured with the Eurythmics, after her time with successful punk outfit Gang of Four. It was the short-lived but warmly remembered association with Fairground Attraction that really brought her into the limelight and to the attention of a much wider audience through the aptly named single Perfect. Of course her own successful solo live career continues to this day. Much of the tour is already sold out so be quick to get your tickets for Stamford either from www.eddireader.com or 01780 763203.

Sat 4th 23 Reasons

Pennyless New Album

Local singer/songwriter Lee Joshua Rose is releasing his self penned debut album For The Record on May 31. It’s currently available on pre order on iTunes. He informs me that in order to purchase the album you have to specifically go into the iTunes Store and search Lee Joshua Rose. Although I knew Lee a few years before, he has the distinction of being the last ever live artist that we featured on ‘Saturday with Keith & Claire’ before the demise of Lite FM in Peterborough. That was 10 years ago and I’ve caught him live a few times since. He’s been performing live for 12 years and amassed over 850 live gigs in the area. Now Lee has achieved a career milestone releasing the first album of his own material. He recorded the album up in Leeds with producer Andy Hawkins and the album has many different shades running through it. Indie rock and pop and even a shot of country in one track in particular titled She’s One Of A Kind. It’s a very radio friendly commercial sounding album, and I particularly recommend The Magic 3 a song written in dedication to three inspirations of Lee’s – Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher and Kelly Jones. His enthusiastic personality always shows through in his performance and I’m pleased that Lee has this debut album to his name. No doubt some of the tracks will feature in his forthcoming gigs. We will keep you informed in ESP.

The ‘good’ weather is just round the corner and so the outdoor gigs start to appear. When that happens, you can always depend on a lot of appearances from Pennyless, the locally based folk rock band. They already have a busy schedule ahead of them and also a new album, Strange Dreams, due for release on Wednesday May 1. Pennyless are a four piece consisting of Penny Stevens, Les Woods, Graham Dale and Colin Benton and the band feature a huge range of instruments in their repertoire including fiddle, flute, guitar, bouzouki, whistle, mandolin and djembe plus quite a few more. Their vibrant performance suits the Festival concept. Their forthcoming gigs locally are: May 4 Spalding Festival, Springfields 2-4pm, a ticketed concert in Thurlby St Firmin’s church 7pm on May 11 and a double header concert at Gretton Village Hall on May 17 with their good friends on the folk scene, Paspatou. Tickets are available from the venues.

Chris Difford @ the Cresset Chris Difford is one of the founder members of cult band Squeeze and he’ll be visiting Peterborough next month when he plays the Cresset on Tuesday June 4. The evening is part of his stand up sit down book tour as he talks about, and plays the songs from his past in Squeeze. Appropriately the tour is entitled Up the Junction 2019. Chris is a Grammy nominated and double Ivor Novello Award winning lyricist who’s brought us characters and sketches from everyday life, and has successfully turned the mundane into the beautiful, the urbane into the exquisite, for over 40 years. With his collaborator, Squeeze co-founder Glenn Tilbrook, Chris has written some of the most enduring and best-loved songs of our time such as Up The Junction, Cool For Cats, Labelled With Love, Tempted and many others. He’s one of the country’s most respected songwriters and has co-written with a host of musicians and performers that reads like a veritable who’s who of the industry. The evening is a talk and music evening and is a unique intimate gig being held upstairs in the Fitzwilliam Gallery Suite. You can book your tickets from the Cresset box office on 01733 265705.

Letz Zep @ the Key ‘I walked in, I saw me’ was the comment of legendary Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant after he attended a show by Letz Zep. Letz Zep are the official number one tribute to Led Zeppelin and they appear annually in Peterborough. I saw them a few years ago at The Peterborough Beer Festival and again more recently at the Key Theatre. They return to the Key on Friday May 17. The band have been awarded ‘The Top

Rated’ and ‘The Most Popular’ tribute to Led Zeppelin by the authoritative Ticketmaster organisation. They tour incessantly and perform to packed houses and rave reviews and have already performed this year to over 45,000 people in seven countries. This includes some very special gigs: two sold out nights at the prestigious Paris Olympia Theatre, an unprecedented achievement. The band

where also honoured to headline the ‘John Bonham – A Celebration’ concert to celebrate the life and legacy of the late, great Zeppelin drummer. The concert also marked the unveiling of a bronze statue to ‘Bonzo’ Bonham in his home town of Redditch. These are a band worth seeing for Zeppelin fans and rock fans alike.
