Described by a visitor in 2013 as ‘The best Father Christmas ever’, Sacrewell prides itself on its Christmas event, which continues to develop each year. Marketing executive Megan Allen told ESP – “I think one of the things that keeps people coming back to visit Father Christmas at Sacrewell each year is that he spends a decent amount of time with each child. We don’t like to rush them.” After jumping on a tractor ride to the old farm house where Father Christmas will be settled by the roaring fire, children will be entertained by activities and characters as they wait their turn. There’ll be fewer kids on each ride this year to keep the queues down. Elsewhere on the farm there will be a Living Nativity in the Animal Village, the mill will be decorated for a Wartime Christmas and the Playbarn will be open.

DO ‘ITALIANS DO IT BETTER’? So, he wants ‘the cars, the girls and the power’. He’s the ‘master of persuasion with the women’. But above all our local contestant on The Apprentice is the self-proclaimed ‘Godfather of business’. As I write, the former Stanground College pupil has enjoyed a good start to the ‘process’ (does this over-used word annoy anyone else?) and caught the eye of Lord Sugar. In the first episode he sold the most fish despite being on the losing side and in the third show he guided the team to a comfortable win as project manager. Photo: BBC/Boundless/Jim Marks
Italians Do It Better was a slogan famously printed on a t-shirt Madonna was photographed wearing in the 1980s and our Joey could be on the way to endorsing this statement.
Roll all his claims into one and Peterborough boy Joseph Valente is something of a cross between Al Pacino in Scarface, Hugh Hefner (his role model) and Marlon Brando in the Godfather. He’s cheeky, confident, edgy and straight-talking compared to his fellow companions. Our boy’s got the gift of the gab and glint in his eye that will see him continue to progress in business whether he becomes Lord Sugar’s apprentice or not. Joey’s going to entertain but at the same time he wants to be taken seriously and that’s why I like him.
He’s part of Team Versatile and glimpses of his resourcefulness are shining through. I laughed at the way he nonchalantly made a male model stand in a bin to prevent water going all over the floor in the shampoo advert. Joey’s also adaptable and has made a quick transition from plumbing sector to being surrounded by wannabe corporate world sharks. These sea predators will take chunks out of you and as project manager Joey stood his ground and showed Richard who was boss in a battle of supremacy. This could be the start of inner fighting and a feud worth paying your TV licence for. Watching Joey on The Apprentice makes me proud. Not only do we share the same hairdresser
(Rai’s the man) but he’s flying the flag for our city and following in the footsteps of my former work colleague Nurun Ahmed. But most of all he’s a Peterborough Italian on prime time TV! His occasional Peterborough accent brings a smile to my face and I chuckle when in certain situations his mannerisms come across so typically Italian, which is something only my fellow city ‘paesani’ can relate to. Like me, Nurun is watching his every move but she’s already one step ahead after having the pleasure of meeting him before the show started. Here’s what she told me: “The on-screen Joseph is very much the person I met, very jovial and inquisitive. I think if he continues to stay true to himself he’ll do very well and could be crowned as the ‘Godfather of business!’ “In the first few weeks most of the candidates tend to shy away and just sit on the fence but Joseph’s been quite vocal and is emerging to be the cheeky chappy. It looks as if he’s gelling well with the team and he’s assertive. He’s shown he can lead and sell very well and I loved his idea of using the bin to collect his watering-can downpour – his plumbing skills came in handy!”
OLYMPIC JOSHUA AND NO ORDINARY JOE Bringing to Peterborough boxing champions from back in the day and of the future is what promoter Kevin Sanders has been doing well for years and next up is Joe Calzaghe. But wind the clock back a few weeks and it was surely a future world heavyweight champion in the making – Anthony Joshua – who entertained us fight fans when he spoke at his boxing dinner. Olympian and MBE, Joshua was charming and likeable as he took questions from those of us who packed into The Solstice to see him. He revealed he rides a Kawasaki, is a massive fan of Tyson and is full of admiration of the Larry Holmes jab. Clearly then a young man who knows what he’s talking about and a boxer everyone will be talking about for years to come.
CIAOS OUT > 14
www.espmag.co.uk
The same can be said for former super-middleweight and light-heavyweight world champion Calzaghe who’s going to be in the hot-seat on December 3. It’ll be the usual serving of a chance to meet him in person, a question and answer session and an auction of boxing memorabilia. However, the difference this time is an Italian themed three course meal that’s worthy of the ticket price alone. Joe will undoubtedly be a no holds barred speaker and tickets for this one are already flying out of the door. Don’t miss out. Call Kev on: 07872 601467.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH
AUTUMN
I love this time of the year: runny nose, bicycle nicked from the fair, steamy visor, spiders, Christmas decorations before bonfire night, cold neck, new boiler, white complexion, dark at 4pm, Strictly every Saturday, wind, rubbish heating at work, fireworks before bonfire night and kids kicking my front door down for sweets.

Course record smashed to smithereens, record number of runners, great weather, fantastic atmosphere and fabulous spectator support – I could go on… In short, the Perkins Great Eastern Run this year underlined why it’s one of the best and fastest half marathons in the country and if you didn’t run it or support it then frankly you missed out. I’ve run it three times and managed the marketing on the event for the last four years and never has anything I’ve been involved with been so infectious. Despite having given up competitive running five years ago I still get that buzz a runner gets from completing the race each time it comes around. And so do thousands of other people from around our city, the UK and overseas who gather on the Embankment once a year in October. The race (and the Anna’s Hope fun run) are unique in the fact the route goes through the city centre and different residential areas, avoiding industrial estates and barren fields. But perhaps what really makes the PGER stand out from the rest is the excellent spectator support it gets. I’ve seen Peterborough folk get behind runners in their hundreds whether it be passing out Jelly Babies and water when they run past their houses or holding up
banners and posters with messages of encouragement. It’s now November and we’re into, what I call the fat months. This means the majority of us will no doubt over indulge in too much food and drink over the festive season. Come January we want to do something about it and my advice is enter the PGER. Not only will it give you something to train and aim for but above all – and I promise you this – when you cross that finish line in October it’ll be one of the best senses of achievement you’ll ever feel. Entry to the 2016 race opens early next year but in the meantime you can register your interest on the PGER Facebook page and they’ll email you once entry goes live. Running a half marathon should be on everyone’s bucket list, make sure it’s on yours! See our photos of the day in Paparazzi
MUNDO MANGLES THEM UP! Big shout to our very own local Italian white collar boxer – Giorgio ‘The Machine’ Mundo – who rolled back the years with an emphatic victory in a Vic’s Gym boxing show extravaganza that raised £1,000 for the City Hospital’s critical care unit. Giorgio’s was the bout of the night and big respect to all the fighters and spectators who put their hand in their pocket for a good cause.

It’s hard to believe it’s 5 years since our hospital services moved from Peterborough District Hospital (PDH) to the brand new City Hospital.
“I also felt it very important to capture the new hospital and so with the privilege of unique access I spent my days off from my day job as a paramedic to walk many miles around the corridors of Peterborough City Hospital. I’d like to thank all the staff for their very positive support.” The staff at Peterborough City
Hospital will be welcoming visitors on Saturday November 21 to an open day in celebration of the hospital's fifth birthday. Pop down to join in the fun, from 11am - 3pm and see what happens behindthe-scenes. View more of Chris’ images on www.chrisporsz.com and www.espmag.co.uk
An exhibition of his images will be on show from November 16 to November 23 on the first floor exhibition area, at the top of the stairs from the atrium at PCH.
Who better to mark the anniversary than talented local street photographer (and paramedic!) Chris Porsz who’s captured so much of our social history on his trusty camera already.
Chris was given unique access and told ESP – “Five years ago I was asked to photograph the closure of PDH and Edith Cavell Hospital and I’m so pleased I’ve captured images of a vibrant and busy hospital full of life rather than a sad demolition site.

Beat the queues for your Christmas shopping… Greener, cheaper and no parking fees to worry about – Stagecoach have your festive travel plans sorted.
We all know the roads are going to get busier the closer it gets to Christmas but you don’t need to pull your hair out in a jam of commuters and shoppers, save your sanity and the planet by hopping on the bus. If more people used the bus it would certainly cut congestion and fumes!
There are frequent services up to every 10 minutes in most areas and there’s need to panic about being late – you can get regular service updates on Twitter and more information on the Stagecoach website www.stagecoachbus.com. You can buy tickets online and take advantage of some great deals. Where many areas have seen evening and weekend services cut we’re fortunate here that Stagecoach with Peterborough
City Council have maintained theirs so you can go out after hours, shop or party and travel cheaply. Ditch the image of grotty old buses too – there are 20 brand new ones in service now that are low floor buses and fully equipped with ramps for the disabled and great for mums too. If you fancy travelling out of town you can also take the guided bus to Cambridge – just hop on at Queensgate or Serpentine Green.
The Stagecoach 5 SmartDays ticket gives you five days of travel only when you need it – so whether it’s for work or shopping, even if you don’t travel every day of the week you’re all sorted! Now there’s an idea for a Christmas pressie too… treat someone to travel freedom, save them cash and help save the planet.

I have to say, my food superiority levels have now officially gone through the roof after spending a few days in Naples. When it comes to fresh and delicious flavours, the people of Naples have seriously got it going on. So I couldn’t wait to come back and explore what great tastes there are to look forward to right here at home. This month I have a nice collection of food and murder mystery fun, Jamaican vibes and sausages!
MURDER, MAYHEM AND GOOD FOOD AT THE BULL HOTEL The Bull Hotel in Peterborough have been putting on some great entertainment and food packages this year and I thought it was about time I gave them a mention and this one really caught my eye. They’ve come up with the clever concept of a Christmas Murder Mystery evening accompanied by some fine dining in the form of a tasty three-course meal. The price is £29.95 with a delicious menu to choose from with options such as spiced butternut squash and coconut milk soup, twice cooked belly of
Grasmere pork and lemon and ginger panna cotta plus plenty more tasty edibles. The theme of the murder mystery is The Festive Lights Fiasco – someone is about to get a most unwanted Christmas present – and it isn't even gift wrapped! Intrigued? Well, put Monday December 21 in your diary and expect a night with a twist. Call 01733 561362 or visit www.peelhotels.co.uk for your ticket and more info.
JAMAICAN NIGHT AT THE ROYAL OAK IN DUDDINGTON It’s great to give the sponsors of this page a mention and what better time than with their good time vibes Jamaican night! Anne Fisher who runs the Royal Oak tells me: ”We really like doing something different and a customer suggested a Jamaican night and we loved the idea. There’ll be some delicious Jamaican food to enjoy along with The Pantasy Steel Band playing reggae music – we can’t wait!” The cost of a ticket is just £29.95 per person and with this you’ll get a drink on arrival and a delicious three-course meal with options such as mussels steamed in coconut milk, pulled pork with mango salsa, goat curry and rice and peas (of course), rum and raisin pudding and a scrumptious range of rum based cocktails. So get some good vibes in your life and leave Friday November 13 free. For more info and bookings call 01780 444267.
CHRISTMAS EASTERN STYLE SAUSAGES GALORE AT FUN OUNDLE FESTIVAL I absolutely love this fun and quirky concept for a festival and I couldn’t think of a more appropriate place to host it than Oundle. Readers I give to you the Oundle Sausage Festival! The brainchild of Oundle Town Council, I caught up with event organiser, Paula Prince who delighted in telling me: “I’m so excited for Oundle’s first ever Sausage Festival. We wanted to do something a little different and absolutely everything about the festival will be sausage themed. It’s going to be great fun.”

www.espmag.co.uk
The festival runs from November 7 November 14 and includes an AGA Sausage Competition, a sausage market (of course), a sausage dog show, a sausage shaped stroll and a sausage supper with legendary storyteller Shonaleigh, did I mention sausage shaped doughnuts too? We’ll be there as will the editor of ESP who will be proudly flaunting her very own sausage dog from Sardinia! For more info on this fabulous event visit www.oundle.info.
There you go, I’ve used the Christmas word again. Well it’ll be here before we know it and what better place to enjoy some delicious eastern cuisine than our very own Thai delights right here in Peterborough. The Brewery Tap and East above Charters, Peterborough, have launched their set Christmas menus for 2015 and they look delicious! Full of eastern promise, this year’s choices include well thought-through starters, mains and desserts. With set-menus starting at £12.95 per person to a full fourcourse banquet for just £28.95 per person, there are dishes to suit every appetite. There’s also a chance to win £100 worth of gift vouchers so get booking and get ordering to be in with a chance. To book call 01733 358500 or visit www.thebrewery-tap.com or call 01733 315702 and click on www.east-restaurant.co.uk.

FOOTBALL SPECIAL PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER: PES 2016
FIFA 16 (X1/PS4/350/PS3/PC) If you’re a fan of FIFA then this is still the best complete footballing package on home consoles – bar none.
(PS4/X1/PS3/360/PC)
This game ruled the footballing roost through the early noughties – and it’s probably just regained its crown. It still lacks the overall gloss of FIFA (presentation and commentary for example), but with genuine advancements – giving it a notably enhanced feel – Konami has almost had to start from scratch to give PES the kiss of life after years of hitting a brick wall. And this has led to a dynamic, fluid and truly responsive game that’s again built on 2014’s solid foundations. For Konami their twentieth anniversary of the franchise could be their best yet.

But EA seems to have tread water in terms of notable improvements over the past couple of years – with some arguing it doesn’t really need to – and seems to have lost a little of the sparkle it worked so hard to gain over the past decade.

That said, if you’re a FIFA stalwart, then the odd gaming inconsistency is heavily outweighed by the presentation polish, even though this version is probably nearer the secondary cover player Jordan Henderson than primary star Lionel Messi – consistent.

MAD MAX (X1/PS4/PC) This open-world adventure as the legendary postapocalyptic wasteland warrior has come with virtually little fanfare to be one of the year’s gaming surprises. With a competent levelling-up combat system akin to the Batman Arkham series, you scour the harsh and gritty landscape searching for trash to build the ultimate vehicle – while taking on vicious marauding gangs. It does get a little repetitive, but with more than 40 hours worth of content exploring this brutal world it’s still an incredibly rewarding experience. Apocalypse wow.

It follows her ups and downs and the huge tabloid speculation around relationships with Prince Harry and One Direction’s Harry Styles which she describes as ‘full of life lessons’ and ‘quite a lot of heartbreak’. “I wanted it to be really emotionally honest,” Caroline announced on The One Show recently.

Next she’s hopefully taking to the West End stage having auditioned for the role of Roxie in Chicago, but first of all there’s a certain singing competition we’re all glued to! After three series hosting the Xtra Factor alongside Olly Murs and Matt Richardson from 2011-2013, Caroline and Olly became the first duo to host the main show this year replacing long term host Dermot O’Leary. Things really hot up in the show now and Caroline knows herself what it’s like to compete having put herself to the test on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing last year – coming out victorious as the winner! Caroline said: "I'm beyond excited about presenting The X Factor with Olly. To have the privilege of doing this with someone who makes
me laugh out loud is a massive bonus! “I'm also incredibly lucky to have the best tips and support from my showbiz big brother Dermot.” Simon Cowell said: “When they were on Xtra together, they were a brilliant double act. Since then, Caroline’s gone from strength to strength – and Olly has become one of Britain’s biggest stars.” Caroline is one of the UK’s foremost TV presenters with unparalleled experience of hosting live TV. She hosted three series of Xtra Factor and prior to this Caroline anchored two series of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here Now! She’s also presented numerous pieces of live event coverage including the prestigious BAFTA Film Awards red carpet and backstage at The Brits and presenting ITV2’s Love Island. Stay tuned to the live shows of X Factor as Caroline and Olly try to keep the judges in order and console the contestants in the lead up to the big final on December 13.

Sean with his batmobile
This month Mikey Clarke hops into Pep Cipriano’s driving seat for our Wheels page. You may know he’s big on films so no surprise this month’s Pride and Joy feature has a film theme… For anyone on social networking sites, I’d be very surprised if you were unaware that October 21 marked that date that Marty McFly travelled to in Back to the Future II. Even if you’re not a fan, there was no escaping the online posts about it. ESP Magazine was impressed by one particular post we saw on Facebook – which leads me to a unique Pride and Joy feature this month!
LOCAL APPRENTICE WINS NATIONAL AWARD
Sean Adams from Parnwell built himself a DeLorean replica, and the ESP team think it looks fab. It’s not the kind of vehicle we usually print on this page, but as it has four wheels, we’re willing to let this one slide. From start to finish, it took the 80s movie fan around one month to build.
Photos: Tim Steele @ Studio One
“I started with two weeks designing it on my PC,” Sean told me. “Another week or so transferring the CAD files to the card templates and gluing everything together ready for paint. Then I added the finishing touches such as the wires to give it the authentic Back to the Future look.”
30
I wondered what inspired Sean to build it in the first place. He told me, “This is THE car I’ve always wanted since the first time I saw the movie. The minute it slowly rolls back out of the trailer I knew that's the car I want one day. So, to remind myself of that I built the scale model to hang on my wall as part of my Back to the Future collection.” Yes, you heard him right – it’s hanging on his wall. That must get quite the response from guests? “Everyone loves it. I constantly get a lot of compliments as to how good it looks. The one thing I hear the most is that people can’t believe it’s just cardboard.” www.espmag.co.uk
I have to say congrats to Peterborough man Dominic Pragliola, who works for truck dealer TruckEast Peterborough and has just been named as a winner in the annual Apprentice of the Year competition organised by truck, bus and coach manufacturer, Scania. It turns out this is not Sean’s only handmade vehicle – “I’ve been building card models of cars and figures for years,” he said. “It’s one of my hobbies. But my love for the DeLorean in particular is strong. I want to take this one up to the next level and super-size it. I’ve built another supersized car from another iconic film – the Batmobile from the first two Batman films (commonly known as the ‘Keaton Batmobile’). That is also hanging on my wall. I have plans to start building Ecto1 from Ghostbusters.” As a 80s film buff myself, I was curious to see if his models were up for sale. “I would never sell them,” he told me. “I like the fact these are one of a kind. I have been known to build various things for other people but creations such as the DeLorean are just for me.” I personally can’t wait to see his next creation. Don’t forget to let us know what your Pride & Joy is – car, bike, truck, whatever! Just email office@espmag.co.uk.
In order to secure his place as the top performing Fourth Year Apprentice, the 23 year-old had to fend off the challenges of fellow students from Scania's nationwide network of service centres at the UK Final of the Scania Apprentice of the Year contest. The event was held at Scania's UK Training Centre in Loughborough, where Dominic received his prize in front of a packed house of the Apprentices' managers, families and friends. "Dominic is committed to building his knowledge and career with us, so I'm delighted he has won this prestigious competition," says Mark Cox, Regional General Manager for TruckEast. "He is a reliable young man who is always focused and consistently turns in a good standard of work. On behalf of the entire TruckEast organisation, I congratulate him wholeheartedly."

Wax on Wax off…
There’s a real art to making your wheels look showroom hot which takes skill, experience and great quality products.
The racks of top quality products could easily be pamper products in a salon but these waxes, polishes and shampoos are purely for four wheeled beauties! Product ranges, usually only available on the internet, such as Chemical Guys, Auto Finesse and Autobrite Direct are now readily available on the shelves at online prices or better. It’s the only walk in shop selling Angel Wax and GTechniq products in the region. So now when the sun shines and it’s car cleaning weather you can drop in and pick up what you need when you need it.

I believe everyone should take care of their car and you’ll be amazed at just how fantastic your car can look with a little TLC.”
Chris has built up his knowledge over the years from personal experience and a real passion for cars and he personally tests out all the products. So when you need some advice on what to use to give the finish you’re after or to tackle a problem he’s your man.

The big and ballsy, yet neat and nimble Q7.
Photos: Tim Steele @ Studio One
take your eyes off the road to check how you’re doing as it’s always right there anyway. This at first seems like a cute gimmicky extra but is in fact very useful!
W
hen I first caught sight of this big shiny Q7 I thought ‘wow, that’s a lot of car’! Since I usually flit around in a fairly sporty saloon I felt maybe sitting at the helm of this impressive vehicle would feel overwhelming but I was soon to be proven very wrong. Yes it is a big machine but once mobile this thing can really move and so effortlessly too! The steering is finger-tip light, the interior is riddled with fantastic shiny buttons

that do wondrous things making you feel at one with the car. The controls are comprehensive and would rival many smartphones even having a touch-pad where you can scribe with your fingers to navigate maps, phones, entertainment options and more. Once it got dark outside and the interior controls and trims lit up I felt like I was in the Starship Enterprise or something, it was very slick. I particularly like the speed and navigation subtly projected onto the windscreen in front of you so there’s no need to
Now this car is large and spacious but it can really fly if you want it to, the 3.0 TDI quattro engine made it difficult to resist zipping along in the fast lane and it really felt great in this! You can switch drive modes to suit the terrain and speed too; for faster roads the body very slightly lowers and in contrast when in offroad mode it raises the body up a smidge for that extra bit of clearance, floating above the massive wheels with their 20” stylish parallel spoke alloys. Being positioned so high gives you a real sense of extra safety with a great vantage point to see a whole lot more going on along the roads. Plus I did feel like giving a royal wave as I looked down on the little cars I was passing (#TrafficSnob) but hey this is a very nice car, I think it infected
me! I threw the kids in the back for a little spin and they loved it and were giggling like… well, like excited children of course. Now I only had two kids to ferry around but could have got plenty more in as this is a seven seater after all. Opening the boot (or letting it open itself at the touch of a button) reveals a huge space with two extra seats available which also gracefully pop up at the touch of a button. I left the seats down and dropped the others too, swapping the grubby, noisy kids for my beautiful shiny bike. There’s so much space I didn’t even need to take any wheels off, just slid it in and pressed the close button (lazy but great!).
“It’s a very capable yet extremely classy looking car...” Now this big beauty only had around 500 miles on the clock when

my playtime came to an end and most of these were mine. I took it on fast roads, narrow roads, bumpy roads and even ‘getting told off by a farmer’ road (sorry Mr Farmer). It’s a very capable yet extremely classy looking car and despite being able to seat seven bums it doesn’t actually feel that big once you’re driving. It handles brilliantly, gives loads of comfort and peace of mind and it really was a shame to give it back. I was wishing I had more stylish events to attend so I could park at the front door and
walk in with a cheeky swagger and a wink. This is certainly a great motor and is well worth checking out even if you’ve never considered something so roomy, after some time in a Q7 you could easily find lots of ways to make use of all that fantastic space; take up mountain biking, skiing, golfing or all three, then have 3 - 4 kids and you’ll still have room for granny in the back too!

TESTED: ‘OilS Of lifE’ aT ThE BODy ShOp The Body Shop at Queensgate launched an exciting new product this month. I went along to test it out. Store Manager Vicky Leung was great helping me try their new ‘Oils of Life’ range. I tried the face cream and essence oil infused with black cumin seed, rosehip and camellia seed oils. Everything from the packaging to the product’s texture and smell makes it feel top quality, at a reasonable enough price. I’ve used the face cream (£25 for 50ml) for a couple of weeks now and my skin does feel tighter, and I haven’t had any spot outbreaks either! Rach’s Rating: ####

The nail polishes are just £3.99 in a range of colours, and they have a fab glossy finish. My tip for autumn would be to grab the ‘Mauve It’ colour. I’ll be wearing it with black and brown clothes to be on trend!

You CAN be a mum and get pampered and you CAN be a mum and have a successful career.
Jo Bevilacqua, owner, Serenity Loves Local business owner Jo Bevilacqua has proved she can do both and that’s why she has recently been chosen as one of the top 100 Mumpreneurs in the country. Her success with Serenity Loves – a hair and beauty salon with a supervised crèche – has justifiably been recognised in this national competition. Now Jo is planning to spread her expertise and franchise the business nationwide. The unique idea of an on site crèche so that busy mums can enjoy a bit of me time and some TLC without worrying about the kids has gone from strength to strength. Now its formula is to be rolled out nationally for others to take up her good ideas.
The business model is very family focussed both with clients and staff. It stemmed from Jo’s personal experience as a mum with two children trying to juggle day to day life as well as looking after herself. Once the seed of the idea came to her, her sheer passion for the concept saw her through to set up the business despite having no background in the hair and beauty industry herself. “I’ve had to learn from my own mistakes and successes,” says Jo. “I’ve pretty much experienced it all so now I’m in a great position to pass on that knowledge to franchisees, allowing them to succeed in business without making the mistakes that I did, resulting in an easier journey for them and quicker results regarding the financial aspect of the business.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have the support of family and friends, utilising their skills to push my business forward, now I’m in the perfect position to offer that support to others who may not have the same foundation.” At Serenity Loves, Jo says impeccable customer service is at the forefront of everything that the staff do and states that it’s just as important as the technical skills that the employees hold. This is very apparent as there are hundreds of 5* reviews online, they’ve been voted as the Best Hair and Beauty Salon in the UK via the National Franchise 'The Best Of', and have received a Certificate of Excellence two years in a row awarded by Trip-Advisor. “We make an effort to know our clients and their children ensuring that the experiences for both parties are as enjoyable as the other. We believe we have thought of everything to back this up, from adult treatments to children’s pamper parties, from male grooming to a Mini cutting car for the toddlers. There’s a real family feel at the salon.” Making life easier for busy people is always at the forefront of their business plan. During the Christmas period Serenity Loves offer additional weekday late nights, opening every weekday evening until 8pm. Perfect for all the Christmas party pampering that may be needed to feel fabulous on your night out. So whether you want your hair styling, want to enjoy some fabulous beauty treatments – or even to start your own business – Serenity Loves can offer it all! Serenity Loves, Oundle Road, Peterborough. One treatment doesn’t always fit all – ESP’s Karen Devine looks at the new approach to health about to be featured in a new BBC TV show…
I
f you’ve ever wished your GP would look at the ‘whole you’ rather than just focussing on treating the one thing you may be seeking advice on, you might be pleased to hear that you’ll soon be hearing much more about ‘Functional and Lifestyle Medicine’. This looks at the body from a holistic viewpoint, acknowledging that chronic disease is almost always preceded by a decline (possibly over years) in one or more of the function of body systems. Our bodies are constantly aiming for balance (homeostasis) as we’re exposed to many interwoven influences (much is lifestyle and environmental exposure to toxins, some can be due to accidents and traumas). It’s a model in which the aim is to help restore function and balance rather than trying to manage the symptoms. This is not suggesting in any way that medicine /surgery is not valid, of course it is and can be lifesaving, it is looking for longer term improvement by way of diet, lifestyle changes, emotional healing, air quality, improved elimination, cleaner habits and more that can be integrated into an individual’s life. Over the years I’ve continued my learning which has allowed me to connect with hundreds of registered nutritionists as well as more recently learning alongside many medical doctors looking to integrate a functional and lifestyle medicine approach to help patients in their clinical practices. Pictured with me is one such doctor that although unknown to you right now, will soon be highly recognisable following the new BBC1 prime time TV series called Doctor in the House set to air this month. You will see Dr Rangan Chattergee integrate with three British families for a month, each of them

having a primary member of the family with an underlying or chronic health complaint. He’ll be staying over with them, eating with them and be a part of their daily lives witnessing all their habits around the clock. He’ll investigate every aspect of the family’s health, working with them to make changes to improve their health and wellbeing, addressing their conditions from a Functional Medicine perspective – the results have been outstanding! This picture was taken recently when we spent five days alongside many more doctors and registered nutritionists from all over Europe deepening our knowledge and understanding to be able to work in a more integrative way. All of life on Earth takes on various forms, all are interconnected and influenced by their environment. We are no different; our physical, mental, emotional (and spiritual) bodies are all connected and interdependent on each other. Our body systems too are so intrinsically linked that a disruption in one system can affect the whole. A little over 16 years ago I set out on my professional journey as a nutritionist using food and food concentrates as a therapeutic approach to wellness as well as removing triggers that are causing interference with the body’s systems either from foods, lack of elimination, blocked detoxification, lifestyle, habits etc. I also look at past history of how ‘symptoms’ have been treated and if this is impacting on the individual now. For instance past use of antibiotics can have an influence on all of our systems and may be one of the underlying causes of poor digestion, immune issues, inflammation, infections, depression, low energy levels, hormonal imbalance and more.
Our gut microbes of which there are trillions, influence everything from physical to mental and emotional wellbeing. A change in the microbial balance from poor diet, stress, lifestyle habits and of course medications especially antibiotics can alter this delicate balance which may lead to many dysfunctions in any of these systems which can interfere with other systems of the body. Removing what creates imbalance and replacing it with that which gives balance is key to improved health and wellbeing. This is not just about food intake, good sleep and bowel elimination but also our lifestyle and present environment all of which impacts on our body and can create harmony or dis-harmony. ALL ABOARD THE CHEDDAR CHEESE CHUGGER
COMEDY GIGS VOODOO STANDS UP
NOV
12 26
The regular comedy NOV sessions downstairs at Mama Liz’s in Stamford continue this month with Geoff Norcott and John Ryan providing the laughs on Nov 12 followed by Howard Read and Stepehen Grant on Nov 26. Tickets are £8 in advance or £10 on the door.
JAMES ACASTER This month as I prepared to write this page I gorged-out on a pre-Christmas cheese selection platter so rich that I fell into a deep cheesy sleep. The resulting dream took me on a tour of local festivities. Standing at the entrance of the Cheese Valley railway station I climbed aboard the 'Cheddar Cheese Chugger' a train driven by Wallace & Gromit powered by McWitty's mini-cheddars. As we built up speed, I heard footsteps on the carriage roof, and lent out the window expecting to see reindeer landing. Instead I spied Connery, Moore, Brosnan and Craig grappling with each other in a fight to settle who was the best ever James Bond. I could just make out Roger Moore raising an eyebrow at the sight of Daniel Craig stuffing Sean Connery's hairpiece into Pierce Brosnan's face. Whisked off my feet I floated out the carriage to enjoy many more Peterborian festive traditions. ‘The Straw Donkey Festival' where locals construct a giant straw donkey effigy to
parade through the streets, honouring the first person that brought one back from the Costa Del David Sol in 1982. At ‘The great multistorey car park Christmas carnival' I stood in awe as it was officially opened by a contestant from TV show 'The Weakest Apprentice Voice Factor', while a visit to the hog roast van had me running for cover when I noticed a jar on the counter called 'Hameron's Homemade Apple Sauce’. Eeeugh. Meanwhile at 'Ye Olde Oundull Christmas Fayre' I guzzled a gazillion pints of 'Santa's Sack' ale in order to disguise the disappointment of how dull ‘Ye Olde Oundull Christmas Fayre’ actually was. To revive my spirits I entered the ‘Skillton Village Cheese Throwing’ contest, which originates from a medieval folktale of a man repelling enemy invaders with a shield made of hardened cheesecake. Where would we all be without the heroics of Hereward the Cheesecake?

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…
Posh Ladies Team
Interest in the women's game of football hasn't been this feverish since 1920 – that is a fact. Back then crowds regularly dwarfed modern attendances for the men's game, with one recorded at 53,000. But then an FA ban on the women's game a year later stopped progress for decades. Officials deemed the sport ‘unsuitable for females’ with the restriction not lifted for another half century. Fast forward to 2015 and the game is in a very healthy state. The success of the women’s game is attractive, not just to supporters, but to the media as well. Millions across the country stayed awake to watch the England ladies superb run in the World Cup in the summer thanks to the BBC coverage and the conclusion of the Women’s Super League (WSL) was broadcast on BT Sport as it went to the final day. Years ago, if you were an England Ladies footballer, you could probably walk down the street without being recognised. Thanks to the media exposure, England Ladies skipper Steph Houghton is one of the most recognisable faces in football in this country. This exposure has seen a huge boom in girls and ladies talking up the sport. Peterborough United have now established a ladies team and will look to add a reserve side to cope with the demand of players in the area. Although in its infancy, Posh

Women & Girls Football Development Officer Jenna Dunster has worked tirelessly for many years putting the foundations in place for a successful programme. “Through the development centres that we’ve been running for a few years, we recognised there was a market to set up a ladies team because we had under 16s in the system that had nowhere to go once they reached that age. Once girls reach that age, they’re able to play in a ladies team and I wanted to create a team under the Peterborough United umbrella. “It isn’t a simple process to enter a league and you have to start at regional level with your local association, so we’re in the Northamptonshire League. There is a pathway through to Combination level and that is our goal as we sit here today. A lot of it is based on funding and to reach the level of the WSL we would need a lot of financial backing from the football club to make it happen. There are a lot of hoops to jump through at that level. “It is a really exciting project to be involved in. It’s vital to have the affiliation with the football club and
we are fortunate that the football club have been so supportive. Everyone has talked about the legacy left from the Olympic Games in London and part of that was the success of the women’s national team. Wembley Stadium was jam packed for those games and that has continued through to the World Cup. “It’s important for the girls to have role models and it does help when you see the drama on the final day of the WSL and to see England go so far in the World Cup. That encourages more and more girls to get involved. We feel that we have a pathway for girls to progress into women’s football and the response we have had within the Peterborough area demonstrates just how popular the sport is.” Posh Community Manager Nick Sheppard said: “Jenna’s passion and enthusiasm for the women’s game in Peterborough is second to none. The impact that has had on participation in the last two years has already been incredible and will only increase moving forward so she deserves a lot of credit for the hard work that she has put in to get the department to where it is now.”
Of course, with every sport, support is vital. Not just at a local level, but at a national one too. It’s brilliant that BT Sport have committed to show live WSL until 2018, but it’s crucial that it’s not binned at the conclusion of that deal. The success of the women’s game in this country will depend not just on the ability on the pitch, but the ability off it to keep it at the forefront of people’s minds. At international level too, the BBC have long been associated with the women’s game, but they can’t drop those standards. Girls up and down the country are dreaming of being the next Toni Duggan or the next Fran Kirby and these girls are role models that you’d be happy for your daughter, cousin or friend to aspire to be and that’s because they’re seen and heard. Women’s football has made great progress and there’s definitely no threat of the FA going back to the dark days of describing it as ‘unsuitable for females’ but they now have a duty to ensure that the game builds on the recent success of the WSL and the rise in attendances and not let it fall by the wayside through lack of funding.

GO ECLECTIC AT THE SOLSTICE
We’ve enjoyed the sounds of Eclectic Ballroom in various hot spots around town and their new move to play at the Solstice gets top marks from us. Featuring local legends and DJ selectors Jim and Zed, these boys have played at sell-out gigs and always draw a good collective of people who just want to ‘get down’ and have a good time. Did we mention Glastonbury Festival loved them too? They combine a sassy collection of tracks to give good time lovers a night to remember. We can talk from experience, these boys’ nights are excellent – great vibes, great people and of course, great tunes! So if high energy disco, funk and groovy electronica are your thing, head to the Solstice on Friday November 27. The night kicks off at 10pm until 3am and entry’s free.

SOUL @ THE THREE HORSESHOES Calling all soul fans! Fancy a night out with some old school 70’s and
80’s soul, boogie, jazz funk and rare grooves? Of course you do. We caught up with local radio man and soul night extraordinaire Skip Stuart to find out about his night at the Three Horseshoes in Werrington. Stuart told ESP: “The atmosphere at the Three Horseshoes is fantastic and the nights draw a great crowd. It’s wonderful to see so many like-minded people enjoying themselves who remember the good old days of soul.” Stuart will next be at the venue on Saturday November 7 alongside Steve Walsh, Johnny Boy Covell and guests for their popular night The Soul Lounge. Entry is free.
JELLY ROLL SOUL It seems this page has become dedicated to all things soul and Motown, and why not? INTRODUCING: JASON SWIFT by Anna Ruggiero Where can we find you at the weekends? “I hold a residency at the Solstice in Peterborough where I play every Friday night on the outdoor Solgarden terrace. The venue is beautiful with a mixed age range and it’s always a pleasure to play there.” How did it all start? “I’ve loved dance music from a very early age and would throw house parties as a teenager using a karaoke machine and stereo and decided after a few parties to get myself some decks and learn to mix properly. “I soon started to collect lighting and speakers and started my own road show with a friend John Murthwaite. I then wanted to take it up a level and started entering DJ competitions and playing guest slots at various venues around my home town.
46
www.espmag.co.uk
“After a few years, I landed my first residency for Twisted Tiger which was managed by my good friend Chris Morris. “I’ve had lots of help over the last ten years for my DJing and feel very fortunate for the support.” Who inspires you? “I love watching creative DJ sets as I find it pushes me to learn more with techniques such as music blending. DJ EZ and Eats Everything are two of my favorites for this.” Tell ESP readers about your style? “I like to mix my sets up and often get carried away mixing across the board with deep, funky and old school nineties classic house music. I like to add acapellas over the top of tracks and maybe some occasional scratching during a set too.”
Tell us about the crowd at your night? “The crowd is a mixed age range and there is always a different atmosphere which keeps it interesting.” If you could play any tune, anywhere, what and where would it be? “Free by Ultra Nate and Spin Spin Sugar by the Sneaker Pimps are two tunes very close to my heart and I’ve always fancied a slot at Café Mambo in Ibiza.” Future plans? “I will continue to do what I love for many years either playing out or at home as my love for music runs very deep.”
Any tips for budding DJs? “Follow your heart and don’t stop doing what you love. After ten years, I’m still learning but I do believe no matter how technical one can be, it boils down to your tune selection and learning to read your dance floor, going out to club nights and seeing how more experienced DJs play to their crowds.”
Louise, Dave and the team took over this historic public house late last year and have strived for very high standards. Cask Mark Accredited, Guiness Accredited and 5* hygiene rated. It is also the home of the Soul Lounge on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…
Keith says...
In some ways reggae is like Marmite. You either love it or you hate it! I know a few people who are in the latter camp, but personally I really enjoy the hypnotic beat of reggae classics, particularly if performed by artists who appreciate the genre. I had a great night watching Zeb Rootz at the relaunched Crab and Winkle in Werrington just recently and a huge audience really embraced the wall to wall reggae/ska performance. They
GLASSHOUSE ACOUSTIC
appeared as a six-piece at the Crab with guitars, keyboards drums and two excellent vocalists and a set that included songs like One Love, The Harder They Come and Message To You Rudy, their repertoire was full of classics.
Years ago The Glasshouse was a popular venue which saw some memorable names come to the Key Theatre bar with the likes of John Ottway and more. I’m pleased to see this venue is being made use of again but now it’s for more chilled out Sunday gigs showcasing a variety of local talent.
They also appear at larger venues with brass and extra vocals and are well worth checking out.
The next free session is on Sunday November 8 at 3pm. Take the Sunday papers, take the kids, and enjoy both up-and-coming young acts and more established artists, all in the lovely setting of the riverside bar.
They appear next in the area on November 14 at Stamford’s London Inn followed by The Crown in New England on November 20.
If you fancy a slot yourself just get in touch with David Pleasance on musos4u@hotmail.com ensuring you have ‘Glasshouse’ in the subject line or call 07526 320336.
NUGGETS CREATE SPARKS @ FIREWORK FIESTA The massive Firework Fiesta event takes place on Saturday November 7 at The East of England Showground. The Nuggets take to the stage to provide a superb musical backdrop to East Anglia’s biggest firework display which is organised by Peterborough Round Table and Rotary Clubs.
A LOT OF RESPECT FOR ERASURE
This is a landmark month for Erasure. The duo of Vince Clarke and our own Peterborough star Andy Bell, were formed in 1985 and they commence their celebrations with two releases which are an absolute must for fans.
Firstly they release a brand new version of their classic single, Sometimes. This is followed at the end of the month by Always – The Very Best Of Erasure. This is going to be released as a single album on both CD and download. It features hit after hit from Who Needs Love Like That (30 years after its original release in September 1985), the perfect pop of A Little Respect, to Blue Savannah, Stop!, Take A Chance On Me, plus the brand new version of Sometimes. There’s also a deluxe 3CD / download which will come with two further discs of remixes, packaged in a hardback book format with a booklet and archive photographs. CD2 and CD3’s tracklisting is an eclectic mix from past to present featuring remixes from Moby, William Orbit, The Grid and Vince Clarke himself. The BRIT and Ivor Novello winning pop duo have released a staggering number of albums, including five UK Number 1’s, 17 top 10 singles (35 singles charted in the UK Top 40) and toured extensively, most recently with The Violet Flame worldwide tour which included two sold out dates at London’s Forum. Still busy after 30 years. More than a Little Respect to our Andy and Vince.

BREWS AND TUNES @ THE PLOUGHMAN The Ploughman in Werrington centre puts on brilliant Beer Festivals, and the bonus is that they hold more than one a year. Following the very successful Summer Festival which excelled in quality of music and beer, they’re holding a Charity Winter Beer Festival from November 26 to 29. There’s the usual blend of real ales, and cider with the added bonus of beef Madras all weekend long. Music comes from Stingray on Friday November 27 with the return of The Nuggets on Saturday November 28 following their successful appearance at the Summer Festival. Sunday night sees the very popular Mighty Mouth Karaoke with Trev. All money raised goes to the Kelly Simmonds Fund which raises important funds to support Heltwaite School.

MAJOR EP ON ITS WAY FROM LEE
Photo: Tim Steele @ Studio One
I was chatting to local singer/songwriter, Lee Major at a BBQ a few weeks ago and he was telling me that he’s very excited about the imminent release of an EP of his own compositions. Lee told me that this is very much a direction that he wants to follow and is expecting to follow the EP with an album early next year. Details on the release dates are available shortly and I will include them in next month’s ESP. www.espmag.co.uk
