CLAIRE IS NEW FACE OF ESP Here she is – our gorgeous new Face of ESP’08 Claire Smith from Helpston. Claire, who works in marketing and events at Bauer, has won over £5,000 in prizes and takes over from Kerry Bates who’s been fantastic at promoting ESP over the past year. You can see all the coverage of our fantastic Finals night in our special supplement this month and buy pics online through our new service www.espmag.co.uk/photos. You’ll be seeing lots more of Claire over the next twelve months and you can read a full interview with her in next month’s ESP when Pep Cipriano meets the new gal on the block!

ANTONY IN TOWN WITH HIS RUG There aren’t many blokes out there who can waltz into town trying to out do our Man About Town, Pep Cipriano in the hairiest chest stakes, but Antony Costa is one of them. The former Blue and ‘I’m A Celebrity’ star was at the Key Theatre, performing in The eXtra Factor - a comedy musical with an ironical and hilarious take on reality shows. He’s pictured flaunting his rug (and a copy of ESP, which he kept!) with Kev and Abby of Hereward FM breakfast fame. Abby, Pep says his email address is at the top of his page just in case you’re partial to a bit (loads actually) of chest hair…

HATS OFF TO THE OCULIST! The coolest opticians in town have proved that they’re also really switched on when it comes to the technical side of their business. They’ve just been awarded ‘Seiko Specialist’ status which means that they’re trained and very good at fitting these specialist lenses to your glasses. Store manager Emma from

The Oculist in Westgate Arcade told ESP - “We’re the only Seiko specialist in the city, it’s a great achievement!” The guys are also proud to announce that they’re now an accredited TD Tom Davis bespoke frame maker, again a first for the city. Another new idea for the autumn is Eye Func, a brand new range of kid’s designer frames which will have your kids looking like little Hollywood stars and at a reasonable price. So lots going on - if you want to check it out pop down during RNIB week, October 6-12 they’ve freed up more appointments to help you! Tel: 01733 555621.

HARRIADNIE HOPES TO BE UK IDOL School girl model and singer Harriadnie Beau from Whittlesey has qualified for the semi finals of UK Idol 2008 which will be televised at the end of the year. The competition offers singers and dancers the opportunity to perform live in front of large audiences as well as the chance to win up to £25,000 in prizes if crowned the UK’s Idol 2008. Competitors will have the opportunity to impress the judges and many guests from record labels, agencies and the entertainment industry. THE BRAYS HOPE FOR RECORD DEAL Well done to The Brays whose single Sin, managed to chart inside the Top 100 and was the highest selling single nationwide in Zavvi stores. As the single, which was released on September 1, sold over 2000 copies they could’ve got much higher, but sadly the sales weren’t verified in time. This was partly due to loads of people buying it late on the Saturday afternoon as The Brays performed live in Queensgate – thanks to this, they’ve had loads of label interest and Matt from the band told ESP - “We’d like to say thanks for everyone’s support in this and hopefully we’ll be signing a recording contract soon!” We’ll keep you posted!

THORPE PARK RANGERS GET NEW SPONSOR Thorpe Park Rangers youth football team have had a real boost this season thanks to new sponsors of their Under 9’s team, Peterborough Telecoms. Managing Director Mike told ESP – “The coach is an old friend of mine and as we’re a locally based company who get a lot of strength from the community, it’s great to be able to give something back.” Thorpe Park Rangers have been playing for 21 years and have three teams in the local leagues. They’ve also recently been awarded the FA Charter Standard, thanks to the tireless work of the volunteers – although as Chairman Simon Wibsey told ESP – “The biggest challenge junior football clubs face is finding enough adult volunteers to commit their time to running a team.” The club recently held trials for the team, but over 20 kids were disappointed as they simply don’t have the staff to cover extra teams. So if you can spare a few evenings a week, why not give it a try? For more details, call 07527 518422 or visit www.thorpe parkrangers.co.uk

STAMFORD FC DINNER The Annual Sportsman’s Dinner which fundraises for Stamford FC will take place on October 27 at Lady

JJ ON THE TELE Hands up who spotted JJ Bird the Peterborough boxer on the lottery game show recently? The local sporting star appeared on BBC1’s ‘This Time Tomorrow Game’ show which is sponsored by the lottery. If you missed that you might have seen him on Golden Balls on ITV, in which he nearly won but the other person stole the money! You just can’t keep this boxer off the box though and now he’s about to appear on a Channel 4 show called ‘Frock Me’ with Alexa Chung and Henry Holland. He’ll be joined by members of the ESP Dance Crew – Nicole Saunders and Aniki Rimes-Rickell along with local girls Beth Robson and Gemma Brown. It’s a show combining fashion and music - they gave the design team their clothes to revamp and they gave them a new look to model on the catwalk! Check out how they got on, on October 5.

KEEP ON RUNNING!

This is it! Come and be part of the biggest event this month, The Great Eastern Run, finally takes place on October 12 and sets off from Cathedral Square. For those who haven’t been training but like a challenge there’s always the 5k Fun Run which starts at 11.20am.

KERRY IS A KNOCK-OUT

Mid September saw the Embankment over-run by all kinds of crazy competitions for It’s A Knockout 2008 – and it was our Kerry’s last event as Face of ESP! It couldn’t have been a better weekend for her or for Axiom Homeless Action, with glorious sunshine and lots of people getting involved, they managed to raise nearly £5,000! The charity, which was re-launched last year with a songwriting competition, aims to help anyone facing homelessness in the city and has had great support from local businesses and residents alike.

On the day, nine teams took part and the Flint Tropics team from Elite Windows won both the fancy dress prize and the competition overall. In joint second place were Hawaii 5-0 from Barclays Commercial and HC Tigers from HC Solicitors. Kerry certainly wasn’t the only person down there giving her support – despite the fact she didn’t win anything at the prize draw – and Cham Simei, Axiom Homeless Action Trustee, told ESP - "I can't quite believe the amount of people who supported us over the weekend. The atmosphere was fantastic and the weather was just beautiful. Much fun and laughter was had by all and the day will be remembered for many years to come." Kerry really enjoyed her last celeb appearance – “It was so funny, I’ve never laughed so much at other people as I did at this event! The weather was so lovely and everyone there really made an effort with their costumes - it really was a fantastic day all round.” www.axiomha.org.uk Liv Slater

Tariq your big day is coming up, but have you always wanted to be a boxer and have you ever thought of quitting? “I knew that from the moment I stepped into the gym I wanted to be a boxer. I just love to fight. Quit? I don’t know the meaning of the word!” What sacrifices do you have to make to pursue a boxing career?

TAZ LACES UP FOR FIRST PRO FIGHT

How are you set up in terms of trainer, manager and promoter?

Boxing fans, including me, have a lot to look forward to this season as hot city prospects such as JJ Bird, Cello Renda and Michael Maguire look to progress in their respective divisions and put Peterborough on the boxing map.

“I have a dream team around me, with one of the best trainers in the country in Gary De‘Roux. Gary’s got some of the best contacts around the country for sparring partners. I’ve got a smart matchmaker and manager, Dean Powell who also works with Amir Khan. And to top it off I have one of, if not the best promoter in the world in Frank Warren.”

But there’s one teenager who’s keen to start his career in the professional ranks on top, just as he finished his amateur days. The big date for Tariq Quaddus, the ‘Millfield Mincer’ as I like to call him, is October 31 were he makes his debut at the Aston Villa Events Centre in Birmingham against an opponent picked by match makers Dean Powell and Peterborough’s former British featherweight champion Gary De’Roux.

“It has to be Floyd Mayweather. He’s World Champion in six different weights and still has an unbeaten record after fighting the best in the world. He boasts a lot but he always backs up what he says. He’s great to watch and everything he’s done in the ring will be admired for many years to come.”

De’Roux has coached Quaddus in and out of the gym and the result is an explosive super middleweight who’ll be plying his trade in an exciting division that’s produced world class fighters like Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, Steve Collins, Joe Calzaghe and the legendary Roy Jones Jnr. I’ve had the pleasure of watching Taz tear up opponents in his amateur days and ruffle up his sparring partners (including me in this photo) in the lead up to his first pro fight. Exciting times lay head for this talented 18 year-old who’s sure to be fighting on home turf before too long…

GET A PIZZA THE ACTION ON OCTOBER 4

Which boxer do you admire the most and why?

Taz’s amateur record (17 fights): Eastern Counties Champion 2003-2004 Golden Gloves National Champion 2004-2005 Four Nations Silver Medallist 2004-2005 National A.B.A Junior Champion 2005-2006 Four Nations Gold Medallist 2005-2006 England Captain (Four Nations)

POST OFFICE CONFUSION?

If you can scoff a pizza in a ridiculously fast time or fancy your chances of eating as many as you can in an endurance test then come along to Cathedral Square on October 4 where I’ll be staging a pizza eating competition for anyone who fancies a go. Entry’s free on the day and two winners will pick up some silverware for their mantelpiece as well as a bundle of free pizza vouchers courtesy of Papa Luigi.

Any Lib Dem members reading this will know that I’m starring on their website www.peterboroughlibdems.org.uk by lending support for the council to get its act together and find a new location for our city centre post office, after refusing to renew the lease on the Church Street Corn Exchange building where it’s been for 40 years.

The pizza competition forms part of the trustourtrades.com launch event (10am-4pm) - an organisation formed by local businesswoman Eileen Le Voi to combat rogue traders coming to your house and carrying out ill repairs or fleecing you (or both). With www.trustourtrades.com there’s no need to bother trawling through directories and taking chances on just any tradesmen anymore. Look out for local tradesmen bearing the logo on this page (see advert) - it means they’re highly recommended, trustworthy and providers of quality work.

What I can’t understand is why some of our city councillors have handed in petitions to Downing Street calling on the Government to stop the closure of post offices in our city when they can’t seem to find a suitable city centre location for our premier post office, which could cease to exist after Christmas if nowhere’s found.

To sign up (tradesmen) and to grab a list of vetted professionals come along to Cathedral Square and join in the fun.

“Boxing is the ultimate sport; you need speed, strength and stamina - you have to have dedication and discipline. It’s not about sacrificing everything because you’ve got to have fun in life. I suppose the biggest thing I’m sacrificing is my time, as I spend a lot of it in the gym. And if I weren’t in the gym I’d be out with my mates partying all night, which is what most people my age are doing. But because what I want to achieve is so tough, these are the sacrifices I’m going to have to make. I’m keeping my feet on the ground and taking it step-by-step without losing sight of my goal.”

COFFEE TO GO, WITH MY VESPA

Most people know me as a bit of a Starbucks junkie. Yep that’s right, I like nothing better than slurping on a £25 cup of coffee whenever I’m in town. Sometimes though, I get a craving for a large soya milk caramel macchiato with sugar-free syrup but have to go without as I can’t be bothered to get into my car, fight through traffic, drive around for half a day looking for a parking space and then busk for a pound to pay for my parking behind the Town Hall because I haven’t any change. Thankfully with my Taz sponsored Vespa, those days are a thing of the past. Grabbing a cup of my favourite beverage is as easy as going to the McDonald’s drive-thru. And here’s why: • Being on two wheels means I can slice my way through traffic and reach my destination in a fraction of the time I would normally by car. • Parking is a cinch. It’s easier than learning your two-times table. You can practically park anywhere where the path is wide enough to allow for pedestrians. And if you’re leaving it out of sight for a while, there’s always a tree or a proper bike rack to chain it too (or in my case at Lite FM, Keith Dalton’s alloy wheel). More importantly, you don’t pay to park bikes. • The ride from my house to town definitely costs much less than half of what it would in petrol by car. I’m getting close to 100 mpg on the Vespa compared to around 30 mpg in my car. The saving I make means I can purchase one of those expensive slices of heart attack cake to go with my gourmet-priced cup of ground coffee beans! So now I ride to behind the Town Hall where I get off the bike, push it through the walk-way out onto Cathedral Square and park up right outside Starbucks where I sip my rip-off coffee admiring my baby’s voluptuous lines. I now see that purely from a cost and time saving perspective, buying a scooter and using it as your primary mode of transport makes a bundle of sense. Then there’s the fun and enjoyment factor… more about that next month when I go on my first ever scooter rally! In the meantime pop into Taz Motorcyles at First Drove, Fengate and check out their range of scooters (01733 358555) or visit www.tazmotorcycles.co.uk

We’re years old! Time to get the party started! The Brewery Tap team celebrate their tenth anniversary…

The bulldozers might still be at risk of riding over one of our favourite venues but that’s not stopping the team at The Tap planning one hell of a party. Can you believe it’s ten years since this fine venue opened? We’ve had some fantastic nights out and held some great ESP events there so we’ll definitely be joining the guys for their 10th anniversary knees up. Entertainment comes from Flamenco Jazz trio the Tres Cojones plus DJs to get you up and dancing. There’s a free Thai finger platter with your ticket which is just a fiver, or you can dine from the A la Carte menu too and don’t forget you get served at your seat now. This party night also sees the launch of the pub’s new micro brewery. Always noted as a brew pub the production of their awardwinning range of Oakham Ales has now moved across to the larger plant in Woodston opening up the old brewery space for new uses. Part of it will be a stateof-the-art new micro brewery so they can now produce one-offs and smaller batches of specialist brews while the rest of the

14

space now becomes a fantastic function room for around 120 people. Manager of the Brewery Tap Jessica Loock says it’s a real milestone they’re all keen to celebrate- “In the last 10 years The Tap’s gone from strength to strength, remaining diverse and emphasising top quality real ales, cuisine and entertainment. “It’s a unique venue that’s safe, friendly and welcoming for a whole range of clientele, while the in-house brewery is a real tourist attraction.” Sadly the threat of closure still hangs over the venue as part of the plans to redevelop North Westgate. While we all agree the city needs some renewed investment, ESP is supporting the campaign to keep The Brewery Tap part of that scheme. “We want to part of the North Westgate development,” says Paul Hook owner of Oakham Ales. “They’ve

dontscrapthetap . c o m

Brewery Tap owner Paul Hook and the new mini-brew hopper

offered to build a new Brewery Tap elsewhere in the development and lease it out to us, but that’s nonsense. “We remain open minded if any replacement could be offered as a freehold but obviously ideally we’d really just prefer to be left where we are. We still need public support as another planning application is due in later this year so it’s certainly not over yet. “In the meantime we’re continuing to invest in The Brewery Tap, remain very positive and just intend to keep it all going forward. It’s been a great success, it’s well thought of and the pub has a great following. We believe it’s still the best pub in Peterborough and we aim to make it bigger and better than ever.” Good stuff…. Now let’s get that party started! See you there on October 10, get your tickets now from the pub or call 01733 358500 for details. www.oakhamales.com

CALISI SPREAD THEIR WINGS TO BOURNE

Popular Peterborough restaurant Calisi is celebrating the opening of it’s second restaurant over in Bourne. You’ll find Calisi Da Francino on North Street and during October and November you can enjoy a free glass of wine when you book an evening meal. Lunchtimes you can also dine buffet style if you like for just £4.90 – bargain! With these prices there’s no need to pack your lunchbox sarnies or nip down the chippy of an evening – enjoy some Italian dining instead. Call 01733 319153 for the Peterborough restaurant or 01778 420123 for the new one in Bourne.

While browsing through the vast selection of dishes on the menu we enjoyed some poppadoms and drinks, everything was done at a relaxed pace and made you feel at ease. We both opted for onion bhajees to start with, followed by egg fried rice, chicken tikka, and lamb bhuna with naan breads. All this for only £30 - I think that’s great value for money and they also offer a takeaway service too with a good waiting area so you can call in and get one on the way home from the office! A big thank you to all the staff - our meal was fantastic and it saved me from cooking for a change. We’ll definitely be back again and again and again… Shirley Frost

GOURMET PLAZA

FOOD FOR YOUR BIG DAY

23 Cowgate, Peterborough, Tel: 01733 344882 On a Saturday night my boyfriend and I decided at the last minute we fancied going out for a Chinese, but didn’t want to get all dressed up. We wanted somewhere with a casual and relaxed atmosphere. We’d been to Gourmet Plaza on Cowgate before, but not for a long time. My boyfriend wanted an all-you-can-eat style buffet (we were both slightly hungover from the Face of ESP finals the night before so had a big appetite!) and we arrived at the venue at around 6pm. The staff were welcoming and attentive throughout the evening, constantly clearing our plates and bringing over water dishes. It wasn’t too busy, so we didn’t have to queue around the buffet. There wasn’t a huge choice, but it had all of the basics you expect to find at a Chinese buffet. Appetisers are my favourite, so I sampled the spring rolls, crispy wontons and chicken satay in peanut sauce. My boyfriend also had the duck with pancake rolls. For our second trip we tried a little bit of everything, including sweet and sour chicken, beef in black bean sauce and roast pork Chinese style. I was full to the brim by the end; although my boyfriend went up to the buffet again I couldn’t manage anymore! Ice cream was included in the set price but we couldn’t squeeze it in, otherwise they would’ve been rolling us out! For a well priced, central location, Gourmet Plaza is great if you fancy going out for a Chinese buffet. It provides great food in a friendly, casual dining atmosphere. Joanne Quinney

The page that wonders how long before a remake of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is made with Gary Glitter as The Child Catcher…

SMELLS LIKE OLYMPIC SPIRIT Judging by the closing ceremony at the Beijing Olympics, Britain still has a way to go if London 2012 isn’t going to be one massive cringe-athon.

players could ride around the swimming pool on the back of sea horses! At the moment it's just a lot of people splashing around wearing swimming hats. Bring on the sea horses to liven it up a bit.

A red London bus that transformed into a green garden hedge? Who came up with that ... Charlie Dimmock from Ground Force and Blakey from On the Buses?!

4. I would also like to see breakdancing installed as an event at the London Olympics. If they have BMXing (another popular pastime invented in the 80's) then they should have breakdancing. Not only is it better than watching rhythmic gymnastics, but it'd be a great event for all the young disillusioned British teenage kids to train for. I can't see too many deprived youngsters from our inner cities rushing to take up equestrian dressage, or yacht sailing in the next four years. Drop one of the poncey elitist sports and give us breakdancing!

Anyway here's my Olympic wish list for London 2012. I'm going to give it to our local Olympic hero Louis Smith to pass on next time he meets up with Lord Obi Wan Sebastian Coe-nobi (or whatever he's calling himself these days). 1. For people to stop calling it London Twenty Twelve, and refer to it by its proper name, London two thousand and twelve. London twenty twelve sounds like a futuristic cricket match that Richard Branson's dreamt up to play on a space station. It's London two thousand and twelve you bumwits, for the same reason that this year is called two thousand and eight, and not twenty o eight. Oh and while I'm on the subject can any school teachers reading this remind their students that the River Nene is pronounced 'Neen', and not 'Nen'. Thanks. 2. Team GB should definitely field a football team. Both the English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish FA's should put their differences aside for once and let us have a Great Britain footy team. If they can't agree, then Alan Shearer and Alan Hansen should manage a pro-celebrity team featuring British football playing celebrities and recently retired professional players. This would get around the problem of FIFA then trying to force England, Scotland, and Wales etc. competing as one 'GB' team in the World Cup. 3. Water polo to be made more like normal polo. Just think how much better water polo would be as a sport if

5. People are saying there's no way we can eclipse Beijing’s opening spectacular of thousands of synchronised drummers, acrobats, pyrotechnics and CGI'd fireworks - but I disagree. Imagine if the London Olympics started like this... Daley Thompson running with a huge javelin, like a modern day pied-piper as he leads 200,000 knife carrying hoodies through the back streets of London accompanied by Leona Lewis singing that song of hers with the chorus “I keep bleeding, I keep, keep bleeding." Then Geoff Capes pushes the London Eye off it's hinges into the Thames where it sets off an electrical / pyrotechnic display that’ll make the Chinese one look so four years ago. Once the smoke clears, Brian May appears on top of Big Ben wielding his guitar and is then reunited with the rest of Queen as a 400ft sky high CGI skeleton of Freddie Mercury rises out of the Thames to sing Queen's epic anthem We are the Champions. So those are my suggestions. Not sure 1-4 will happen, but I reckon they'll have to go a long way before they come up with anything to match No. 5.

JOKES OF THE MONTH

"I've changed my security question with my bank so whenever I ring up instead of asking me my mother’s maiden name, they now have to say 'You're not going out like that are you?' to which I reply 'You can't tell me what to do - you're not my real Dad'. " - Lucy Porter "What did Jay Z say when his ice cream van rang out of Cadbury's chocolate flakes? 'I've got 99 problems...' " - David O'Docherty "When I was young we only had one book in our house - the phone book. I don't want to spoil it for you, but there's a lot of characters in it and towards the end a lot of Polish people turn up." - Stephen K Amos

STAND OUT

STAND UP This is what I recommend you spend your pocket money on this month. Jon Richardson at The Cresset on Friday October 31. Last year I tipped Jon, or J-Rich as I like to call him, for a great future in comedy. He may not have made the breakthrough into being a regular on TV panel shows just yet, but I'm sure it won't be long. Listen out for his BBC6 Sunday morning shows 10am -1pm as well (Sky channel 0120). Box office: 01733 265705. Stamford Arts Centre Comedy Club Friday October 24 headlined by Nick Doody. I've seen Nick a couple of times, and he's a very accomplished comedian. He also has the unique distinction of being handpicked by the late, great Bill Hicks to be his warm-up act during Hicks' last UK tour in the early 90's. I can't even begin to imagine what that must've been like, but if you go along to Stamford, Nick might just tell you. Box office: 01780 763203. Russell Howard at The Broadway on Saturday November 22. The star of TV’s Mock the Week returns to Peterborough after his sell-out show last year. This is his brand new stand up show, so if you saw him last time you won’t be disappointed. Box office: 01733 316100.

It’s time to get ‘naked’ this month, or should I say get in the raw! We know that many foods such as chicken have to be cooked to kill off bacteria which could harm us. But when you look at the average diet, a good 80% (or more in some cases) is made up of cooked or highly processed foods. Raw, uncooked veggies and fruits are often a drag to eat or an afterthought. We need raw foods in our diet to help promote optimum health. Apart from the fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals, raw foods also bring chemicals called enzymes into the body. These tiny chemicals create reactions in our body which give energy, help break down foods, help in healing and repair and much more. When we eat only cooked foods and do not add any raw food into our daily diet we’re robbing our body of these chemicals as it has to make them, in time our production of these slow down as we use up our stocks and find we can’t replace them at the same rate. After a few years of eating a diet low in fresh veggies and fruits with a high intake of starchy, highly processed foods the digestive system often becomes sluggish, bloated and clogged.

When we starve the body of these life-giving chemicals we can often see signs of digestive distress such as – Indigestion Bloating Flatulence Feeling of heaviness even after the slightest food Feeling clogged up Fatigue… and much more Imagine your digestive system is like a juicer, it extracts the vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins and enzymes it needs for optimum function, whilst taking away the fibre to keep us regular. When we do not put a certain amount of raw veg into our diet then we will not extract any enzymes. If you’re eating a high percentage of cooked or processed foods then you need to start putting in a portion of raw foods each day, or as a great way to get a quick ‘shot’ of nutrients, a fresh juice can give you the boost you need. See your body as a nutritional bank, when you put plenty of nutrients in, then the odd time you can make a withdrawal by eating treats. Keep taking out of it and you’ll feel the effects in your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Don’t get caught by your own nutrient credit crunch! Karen

Fruit Aid is the new juice bar concept in Westgate Arcade in Peterborough, offering not only fresh, raw juices, smoothies and wheatgrass shots, but also healthy fresh salads, soups, porridge and hummus dips. They offer many meal deals such as 20% off breakfast between 8am and 9.30am each day and are currently working on plans to deliver direct to city centre businesses. So, there are no excuses for not trying juices or eating a portion of ‘naked’ foods each day. Each month we’ll work together on a ‘juice of the month’, if you take a copy of ESP along with you, you’ll get a 10% discount on the monthly juice (medium size). This month the juice is the ‘REVIVE’ with pineapple, coconut, papaya, mango and banana. A great way to get a last taste of summer ( the one we didn’t get!)

KAREN’S BACK ON THE BOX!

We can’t keep our Karen off the telly these days and she’s recently been filming yet another new health series. Karen took a trip to Spain with five teenagers who needed help with their physical, emotional and mental challenges. The series called Teen Spa can be seen on your TV screens in January 2009 and highlights the ‘ticking time bombs of health’ that many teenagers face today. Karen tells us much fun, tears and laughter made this a unique film to be part of, so look out for the series next year on BBC Scotland and the new channel which Richard and Judy front! ESP LOVES… GET IN THE PINK FOR BREAST CANCER

Pink. What better colour to celebrate all things girly? It’s also the colour you should all be wearing this October to show your support for breast cancer awareness month. According to Breakthrough Breast Cancer, over 44,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone, so the whole month is dedicated to increasing awareness and raising money for research. Charities like Breast Cancer Campaign, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Cancer Research UK are all fundraising with a variety of pink products and events this month. A whole range of health and beauty companies have once again used their expertise and products to support breast cancer awareness month, so I've been checking out some of the latest products which look great and let you do your bit for a very worthy cause at the same time.

Adidas have a brilliant range of running products (available at JJB stores and online), Avon have dedicated make-up (www.avonshop.co.uk) and both GHD (www.ghdhair.com) and Tweezerman (Boots or www.tweezerman.co.uk) have also got in on the act to bring you their usual great products with a pink theme and a proportion of their prices are going to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. It's easy to get carried away with all the cute pink products and forget what this month is all about – so girls, if you take one thing away from this article, make sure you remember to be aware of your breasts: Touch your breasts. Feel for anything unusual. Look for changes. Be aware of their shape and texture. Check anything unusual with your doctor. Chat with your friends if you're worried. Visit www.touchlookcheck.org.uk for more information and advice all year round. See www.cancerresearchuk.org/breastcancer for details of the ‘It’s A Girl Thing’ campaign and www.breakthrough.org.uk for further advice and fundraising ideas.

AMANDA AND EMILIO FIND ‘EDEN’ “Our passion is hairdressing!” So say Peterborough hairdressers Amanda and Emilio who’ve just opened up their very own salon called Eden on Oakleigh Drive (just off Shrewsbury Avenue, Orton Longueville).

“This is my ultimate dream - to be able to offer clients a service that’s very relaxed and personal with plenty of time spent on each individual, with the emphasis on a very professional and creative approach. Along with our lighthearted banter and fun, friendly team I think we’ve achieved the perfect balance,” says Amanda. With a gorgeous, brand spanking new salon just launched the team are excited about the future. Amanda’s fulfilled her dream and is already planning ahead. “I’m a big believer in attending advanced training courses in order to remain a front runner in offering up-to-the-minute cuts and colours to our clients. I’ve personally attended four courses already this year including one with Terry Longden, which was amazing!” Emilio is equally enthusiastic - “After 30 years of working in the hairdressing industry I’ve finally found my ‘Eden’. I’ve never enjoyed hairdressing as much as I do now and I sincerely hope this reflects on the work I do with my clients.” Amanda adds – “Emilio has an extra special talent that’s hard to match. Having been involved in competition work in the past (winning the L’Oreal colour trophy) we’re both excited about entering our team into national competitions in the near future so watch this space!” The Eden team believe hairdressing is not just about a good cut and colour, it’s about good communication between the stylist and client. Listening to their needs and interpreting them correctly is vital. They aim to create a hairstyle that the client can manage well at home so they look just as good in between salon visits. The two well-known local stylists have a strong following and have styled our Face of ESP girls for a fashion shoot, as well as being part of the team that created the hairstyles for the dancers in The Brays’ video for their single Sin. The rest of the Eden team includes Ewelina, who’s back by popular demand and according to Amanda “has exceptional talent!” She has eight years experience and specialises in funky cuts and colours. Kayley is their first year apprentice with amazing potential and there’s Dani – their very experienced LCN nail technician who sculptures beautiful natural looking nails. They’re currently looking for models for colours at cost price. 10% discount for all new clients – just quote ESP Phone for an appointment and free consultation on 01733 361371

Confessions... Susan Saunders

susan.saunders@espmag.co.uk

Twenty minutes later and after my second recipe deviation of adding flour and an avocado pear for extra moisture, my mixture resembled something closer to guacamole than a DIY face pack. On entering the sitting room to break the bad news to everyone, I scanned the room and noticed that all but one had already applied the lovely fragrant Origins face packs that my friend Sapphire had brought round instead – the face pack traitors!!! As I stood there with mixture strewn all over the place, I looked more like a yeti and as a dollop of mixture fell to the floor from my index finger (splat!), no-one could contain themselves and all burst out laughing at me (I began to wonder was it just the flour and mess they were laughing at?!). Once I cleaned myself up I was able to delve straight into the evening agenda of girly catch up session. After many disbelieving gasps of ‘he really said whats?’ and ‘she really did thats!’ we discussed how girl X had been seen leaving the boys’ toilets with boy X*. (Break in thought – what the very devil were they doing in there?! Hmmmm… -N-T-E-R-E-S-T-I-N-G!) One of the girls revealed she had ventured into the boys’ toilets too once before as there are never any queues. All of us agreed with this little fact and half of us admitted that at least once in a blue moon, we’d used the blokes’ toilets (for nothing untoward I’ll have you know – how very dare you!) rather than joining a 50-long queue of women doing their own version of The River Dance entitled ‘thou shalt not wee neigh’ (stop your disapproving tutt tutts girls, you’ve all done it!) Some time on and a couple of standard rants and several giggles later, I came out with one of my silly one liners as I was utterly intoxicated with my gal pals. I laughed and laughed until I thought my face was going to fall off… it was! I’d only gone and left the face pack on for 40 minutes – eeek!

Susan has the recipe for a great girls night in… You will need one large bowl. Stir in 100 gms of oats, four tablespoons of honey, add one tablespoon of water, followed by 50 gms of Demerara sugar. Stir the mixture until it turns into a paste consistency, add a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and stir again… Sound like a cake mixture? You wouldn’t be the first to think this, my horrified friends included, because in some ways I was making a cake mix, it was definitely a concoction of sorts but not one to be eaten. It was my newest of beauty trials for a DIY nutritious face pack for a girly gathering. The scene was set, the gossip mill was bursting at the seams and the invite was simply this – Girl’s guide to a very funny eve – location, the Whelpdales – time 8pm – bring your best news and your fine selves – face packs will be provided… So, being inspired by the recipe for a good abrasion, I thought I’d give this DIY organic face pack thing a go. I’ve always seen myself as a younger, fresher, browner ‘Delia’ as I like a bit of the ol’ experimentae in the kitchen.

It may have been a mixture of face packs, pampering foot treatments, nail varnish, the disaster guacamole and the imaginary, but ever present, ‘no boys allowed’ sign but either way, we had a fab night. The only real recipe to remember from this evening would be the ingredients for pure genius – You will need one large, house shaped bowl, a gaggle of your fave girlies (all of them if you can get them to commit to one date – Amber we missed you!), five fun + one risqué topic of conversation. After gently folding some kettle chips into your mixture, add plenty of banter, mix it up for three hours and voila the perfect girly night! Boys, be afraid – it’s coming to a house near you soon!

Susan’s disclaimer *The identities of boy and girl X have been concealed to protect their reputations. Do not ask me to who I am referring as the information is top secret Government-protected stuff. P.S. I probably don’t need to tell you but – please don’t try to recreate the face packs – they’re naff!

OUR OWN LAST CHOIR STANDING! You’ve seen the TV show, well we had our own Last Choir Standing – none other than Peterborough Gospel Choir entertaining guests at the Finals night. The (PCGC) Peterborough Community Gospel Choir’s been running since 2002. It was formed by Errol Ballantyne the Choir Director. Its main purpose is to give people the opportunity to sing

in a gospel choir and to entertain the community by singing at various events. The choir is for anyone interested in singing – you don’t have to be religious! Over the years it’s helped many people become more confident singers and helped others just to relax and meet other people. Everyone is given an opportunity to lead songs if they like but no pressure! You may have seen them perform at various functions, weddings, fundraising concerts, Nursing Homes as well as venues such as the East of England Showground, Cathedral Square and Queensgate Shopping Centre. They’ve even appeared on the BBC3 TV show ‘Spendaholic’. They can also be heard on one of the Songs of Paul Copestake, recorded at the Eye Studio, Peterborough. The choir is looking for more members especially men. They practice every Thursday evening 7.15pm to 8.45pm at St.Mary’s Church, New Road, Boongate, Peterborough. Anyone interested can contact Errol Ballantyne on 07711 229427 or email pcgchoir@hotmail.com. Website: www.pcgc.org.uk

FINESSE FLOWERS Our two gorgeous girls, winner Claire Smith and close runner-up Gabriella Lester were showered with gifts on the big night including two fantastic bouquets from Finesse Flowers of Werrington. Partners Sharon and Fred opened Finesse nearly a year ago and have been building a great reputation for their friendly, positive, ‘do anything’ attitude along with beautiful flower designs at an equally attractive price. This is a ‘sort of’ sequel to the Ang Lee/Eric Bana Hulk, but also a reboot for the franchise aiming to stick closer to the comic books and generally please the fans more. Edward Norton takes over as Bruce Banner, and a new CGI model takes over as the big angry green thing. Banner is being chased by the United States army, which is stressful enough, but then Tim Roth has a familiar accident involving gamma rays and swells into the Abomination, a bigger and scarier monster that wants revenge. It’s enough to drive Banner up the wall, and we love it when he’s angry.

IRON MAN Out: Oct 27

Bond’s back on the big screen and the big green monster’s back on DVD. Tony Stephens has our guide to the hot new releases…

OUT THIS MONTH QUANTUM OF SOLACE Out: Oct 31

Casino Royale had to happen. The Bond films had always been a bit silly, but Die Another Day, with its invisible cars and space lasers went too far. Watching it alongside Austin Powers, it was hard to distinguish which one was supposed to be the spoof. So it was not only a wise move but a necessity that Casino Royale was made, taking Bond back to his roots and at the same time making him more relevant to today’s post-cold war audience. The choice of director (Martin Campbell) was well made too; he’d previously directed one of the more ‘realistic’ old Bonds, Goldeneye. He’s not back for Quantum of Solace, but it seems to be in safe hands, those of Marc Forster, whose CV includes Monster’s Ball and Finding Neverland. This one follows on from where Casino Royal left off with Bond on a revenge mission over the death of Vesper, the woman he fell for. The critics have been excited, for like months! And here at ESP we can’t wait to see Daniel Craig back in action - no doubt we don’t need to encourage you to take a look… expect queues, long queues!

BURN AFTER READING Out: Oct 17

Burn After Reading, the Coen brothers’ latest, is a dark comedy where circumstances bring about a clash of two unrelated groups of characters. When Osborne Cox (John Malkovich) is kicked out of the CIA for his alcoholism, he returns home to write his memoirs, and also drink a lot, of course. His wife (Tilda Swinton) is meanwhile having an affair with a cop (George Clooney). Somehow a disc containing Osborne’s memoirs winds up in the hands of two fitness centre employees (Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt) and lands all involved in a lot of trouble.

Tony Stark is a little different to other comic book heroes; prior to deciding to wear their pants on the outside, they’re usually tortured souls and underdogs. However, Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a multi-millionaire living the high life, and it’s not until he’s kidnapped, forced to build a WMD and has somebody sacrifice their life to help him escape that he changes. He wants to help others, but rather than donate to charity he utilises his wealth to develop pants he can wear on the outside. They’re hi-tech though, and star in this years’ (second) best comic book movie.

GAME ON FAR CRY 2

(XBOX 360/PS3) Out: Oct 24 The first Far Cry was developed by Crytek studios, the team also behind the recent Crysis (there’s a pattern of some kind going on there, methinks), but they are not involved in this game, the first proper sequel to the PC hit after countless remakes and expansions. Also missing is the originals’ protagonist Jack Carver (who nobody liked that much anyway) along with the beast-like abilities from the aforementioned expansions (think of the Predator from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie of the same name). That’s not to say there won’t be a ton of new ideas to make up for it, if not blow the original away completely. And the new African setting looks rather lovely too.

LITTLE BIG PLANET

(PS3) Out: Oct 31 At a glance the gameplay of Little Big Planet seems to involve traditional platforming, just like the timeless classics Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog. But of course these days there’s got to be a gimmick or two, and the main one here is brilliant. It’s not the way you can play with others to co-operate and solve puzzles together (though that’s obviously cool), but the fact that you can customise just about everything you see. It’s beautiful to look at to begin with, but you’re given the tools to make it as far out as your imagination will allow, and share it/play it online. (Release dates are subject to change.)

ESPCELEBS Step up Aston Merrygold – could this Peterborough guy have the X Factor? Well, it’s been looking good so far as Jo Brooks reports for ESP… I’ve felt X Factor’s been lacking a good singing group for years, but the JLS group, which includes local boy Aston Merrygold are tipped to go far and are already through to boot camp. Some of you may know Aston Merrygold well as he went to Jack Hunt School and first shot to fame a few years back when he appeared on Stars in Your Eyes as Michael Jackson. Unfortunately he didn’t win but went on to do Fun Music Factory on CITV, then it went quiet… until now. There I was sitting at home in front of the TV with my mum on a normal Saturday night when suddenly a boy group walks on to face the X Factor judges. Suddenly I hear - “I am Aston” - I turned to my mum and shrieked excitedly - “He went to my school!” Aston along with band members JB Gill, Marvin Humes and Ortise Williams sang a rendition of If I Ever which blew the judges away. First to make a comment was Cheryl Cole who said - “I love you! I think the industry is missing a boy band and you rule, the vibe is great between you.” After good comments from the other three judges Aston along with his band mates were put through to boot camp where they impressed Louis but not Simon Cowell! I caught up with Aston to find out how the story began… Aston told me how the group where travelling to meet up in pairs when strangely enough they both had the same conversation, that they should enter X Factor. Obviously spending so much time together has given them physic connections, but they definitely made the right decision. He also told me how boot camp had been “very, very good” and the boys where happy with their song choices. On the night of the airing of their audition, Aston told me how he went out in Peterborough city centre - “I saw more school friends than I have done in four years,” and they all went up and congratulated him. Aston and the band plan to do some serious partying before getting back to rehearsing. All the team at ESP wish Aston and the JLS boys the best of luck and hope to see them performing here in Peterborough some time soon. Jo Brooks

She’s been compared to Joss Stone and Duffy and her album’s been described as a white reggae version of Lily Allen. ESP’s Jo Brooks says Ava Leigh is the new girl to watch… Ava Leigh is the latest hot new talent set to hit the charts with her new single La, La, La. With long blonde hair and hippy-style she looks the most unlikely girl to be bringing a fresh new sound to reggae, a genre that was made famous long before her time. Chester born Ava (born Hayley Carline) developed her love for reggae when her mum used to listen to songs like Silly Games by Janet Kay. After rejecting a place at stage school to follow her pop dreams, it’s fair to say that she made the right choice. “I write lyrics about my own experiences and I love songs that everyone can relate to. I want to make memories.” Don’t be fooled by the sweet vocals and gentle lilt though, Ava calls tunes like Who Told You and La, La, La her ‘angry love songs’. “Sometimes you’re in it and you can’t get out of it,” she says, “even when you know it’s wrong for you. I’ve felt that way, and I know there are a lot of people going through the exact same thing right now.” Much of her latest album ‘Turned-On Underground’ was recorded in the town of Glastonbury; however Ava did take a trip out to Kingston to record a track with reggae duo Sly and Robbie. With her summer single Mad About the Boy stealing plenty of airplay on Radio One and receiving rave reviews from the music press it looks like the Ava story is only just beginning. Ava’s new single ‘La La La’ is released on October 27.

CRAZY P PUT LOVE ON THE LINE

Crazy P deliver an amazing new album ‘Stop, Space, Return’ set for release on October 13. ‘Love On The Line’ is the first single to be fully released and is definitely one of the standout tracks.

The original moves along on a pulsating, electronic 4/4 backing under Danielle's insistent vocals recalling some (dare we say) classic Donna Summer moments. Remixes come from the mysterious Art Of Tones with three distinctly different offerings. The vocal mix keeps the structure of the original intact whilst fattening it up perfectly for house dancefloors and the dub compliments this for the nonvocal heads. But the Photon dub takes things further onto house dance floors for an impressive 3am Wild Pitch experience, and is already a Back To Basics

anthem. Next up come The Unabombers who drop us some of the Basement Soul music their Electric Chair night was world renowned for. The vox and dub versions are expertly produced examples of old school New York house with a nod to disco. Speaking of disco, nu-disco supremo Pete Herbert loved the track so much he made his own edit and while Disco new kids PBR Streetgang (Red Music) finish the package with another great disco dub. THIS CITY’S GOT SOUL

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire’s ‘soul man’ Ian Gray lifts the lid on the strange world of Northern Soul… You’ve heard the name and seen the posters. Intrigued by the term ‘Northern Soul’, we asked Ian to explain this long-lasting music scene in Peterborough which is still going strong with several events lined-up over the coming weeks.

NORTHERN SOUL NIGHTS

Whether you’re a die-hard fan, or if you fancy tasting it for the first time somewhere in the ‘boro, here’s where you’ll find the Beeb’s Ian Gray and other top local Northern Soul DJs:

So what’s northern about it?

The most famous Northern venue ever – Wigan casino

Let’s get the facts right. Contrary to popular misconception, ‘northern’ does not necessarily mean the name tag ‘Northern Soul’ originated in the top half of the American continent. In fact, the term ‘Northern Soul’ is distinctly English in origin, being coined by a UK music journalist almost 40 years ago to describe a style of music that started its popular life in places like Wigan, Manchester, Stoke and Blackpool. That said, most – but not all – of the big tunes did originate from black America, but many didn’t initially see the light of day in the US or UK charts – until English DJs started spinning them in clubs in the late 60s and through into the 70s. Their relative lack of fame has meant that many of these discs have become collectors’ pieces, changing hands for serious money, often into three or even four figures. What does it sound like?

70’s Re-union night of a top local soul venue

When you hear it, you know it, and never forget it. It’s from similar origins to Motown with lots of horns, a driving beat and soulful vocals. Some say that the idea for the film Saturday Night Fever was inspired by the long-gone Wigan Casino, and its dance floors full of stylish male dancers. (Check out the guys at any of the gigs listed and you’ll see what I mean).

allegedly Macky, Jan and Andy. Locally, we weren’t far behind this booming trend, with big nationally known venues like the Wirrina stadium and the Fleet Centre, plus lots of smaller pubs and clubs such as The Halcyon, Cloud 9 and The Spinning Wheel, all featuring Northern Soul, and attracting both local fans and those from further afield.

So, it’s all for those with long memories then?

October 17

No way. Peterborough still plays host to a number of Northern Soul events every month, and it’s encouraging to see dance floors full of not only those who cottoned on to this scene anywhere from the 60s to the 80s, but also lots of younger guys and girls realising what great dance music this is. And it is real music – not manufactured by five-minute wonders from reality TV shows.

Who are the DJs playing ‘Northern’?

Tel: 01733 708320

Well, myself for one, and Peterborough can boast a number of nationally known guys like Steve Allen, Paul Donnelly, and Andy ‘Smudge’ Smith. The next few months promises an array of exciting gigs, like a huge ‘Soul Weekender’ at Hunstanton on November 28-30 (Tel: 01485 534211 and www.searles.co.uk), and a big re-union night at The Parkway Club on November 7, with live music from The Fantastics (Tel: 01733 204353).

LIVEMUSIC Andy Slater andy.slater@espmag.co.uk

Having failed miserably to sit down with my next profile victim, I was offered a lifeline by the editor. “Andy Whitt is not able to get his column done this month can you help?” did I need asking again? No. So here we are back to where I started with the mag, writing about local stuff. The gig on everyone’s mind is still a way off yet but nonetheless, Feeder are coming to town. Formed way back in ’92 the band from South Wales have racked up millions of record sales, despite taking a break in 2002 to mourn the death of their drummer Jon Lee. Their single Buck Rogers was a massive top ten hit in 2001 which propelled them into superstardom and is still their most memorable. Expect the same power Indie sound mixed with keys and synth that they always had, and a great stage show. Grant Nicholas has always been a great front man and The Cresset is a great place to catch ‘em close up.

DAVE JOINS WHITE SPIRIT

Following their success at the Bourne Festival where they headlined the opening night to a crowd of 2,000 people, local band White Spirit were devastated when lead singer Nick Wade announced he was leaving. The good news is that after numerous auditions, the band’s now found a new singer with none other than Dave Palmer AKA ‘Little Dave’ joining them. Dave’s well known around the Peterborough rock scene and his association with ‘Hooker’ and ‘Storm’ has endorsed his reputation as one of the top vocalists in the area. an update on The Destructors. Apart from Dave Colton who’s now taken to wearing waistcoats (sorry pal!) the band are destined to play the SXSW Festival in Austin Texas next year. That’s no mean feat, well done guys. If you’ve never heard of it before check it out on Google, it’s one hell of a festival, do you need a roadie that

Support for the night comes from The Chemists whose new single ‘Something for the Weekend’ is out now. The band have previously supported The Bluetones and The Music so they must be doing something right. Only thing is I thought you bought something from the weekend from the barbers not the chemist… The gig’s on November 28 and tickets can be ordered on 01733 265707 or check out www.cresset.co.uk So what else have I heard, well after a brief break due to lease problems, Carl at the Peterborough Live Lounge should be up and running again at the end of October so keep your ears peeled. If you were in a local band in the early noughties it may well be worth a trip down there to peer at the ceiling, he has loads of posters from my old Lounge Lizard shop stuck on it. Some of the band names you will remember some you won’t! Arconna, Blue Furries, Nikita, King Cow, Melon Farmer… you get the drift, check it out! One of my favourite sci-fi buffs, Al the erstwhile check in desk attendant at the Met Lounge collared me a while back and gave me

LYNOTT TRIBUTE NIGHT

The Phil Lynott Tribute show comes to the Royal British Legion in Yaxley on October 4 and will be a night full of Thin Lizzy and rock songs. It’s all to raise funds for The Roisin Dubh Trust and will even be attended by Phil Lynott’s mum! Support comes from Children of the Revolution, The Above and Crossfire, who are reforming for this night only. There will also be a raffle and other games all night, and tickets are £10 on 01733 240873.

COMING SOON… NEW MUSIC VENUE IN STAMFORD end? They’re also putting out a couple of CDs, ‘Geistbahn’, and a CD called ‘This Is Peterborough’ a compilation of local stuff as of now, should be fun, a bit like what Digital Dick Cartmel did with ‘Peterborough ‘97’, and if you want a copy of that I can still get them… Finally Deeping folk, keep your eyes on the gig guide for my old Boston mate Scott Bateman playing The Old Coach House, he does a great cover of ‘Suspicious Minds’ and that has got to be great in anyone’s book. Catch you later, Mr Whittaker will be back next month. Andy Slater

Mama Liz’s, on North Street in Stamford is fast building a reputation for good Creole and Cajun soul food and exciting music such as Steel Union, Angryman and The Dana Wylie Band. The live music venue downstairs – run by members of The Surgeons – should be opening later this month but in the meantime the likes of Andy Whittle play upstairs on October 4 followed by John Litchfield and Lexie Green on October 11 and Adrian Burns on October 25. Every Friday night also sees resident DJ’s Zed and Jim of Ecletic Ballroom playing the dirtiest Jazz, Funk and Soul breaks. www.mamaliz.co.uk Liv Slater

BBC BUSKERS IN THE BORO

If you’ve noticed the standard of buskers around the city centre has fallen this month, then blame the Breakfast Show at BBC Cambridgeshire! They decided to go busking around town to raise funds for their Trustline Charity – but the problem is, not all of them are that musically talented. It began when Ben was sent out onto the streets of Peterborough to see whether any of us were opera fans, although the results were probably not that accurate as Ben isn’t exactly a budding Pavarotti. Johnny Dee and Karen went down well, as they’re both musicians, but the rest of the team had mixed results! To listen to their attempts, visit the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire website at www.bbc.co.uk/cambridgeshire. Liv Slater

NOASIS FOR TRACEY

The Whittle Way pub in Stanground is a regular venue for some cracking live bands and this month the venue celebrates the memory of landlady Tracey Strickson. Top tribute band Noasis are playing on October 3 as part of a charity night and a special memorial to Tracey who sadly died last year and had booked the band for her birthday. There’ll be a £2 entry charge and all money will be going to the PDSA (Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals), as Tracey worked at a vets for 16 years. There’ll also be a karaoke night on October 4 which will be a quid a song, again raising cash for PDSA.

STAMFORD CORN EXCHANGE SHOWS After eight years of hard work by the people of Stamford, the Stamford Corn Exchange has finally been fully refurbished and re-opened! All the work has been done by volunteers and thanks to their sheer determination, the 150 year old building is now a 400-seat theatre which will host some amazing nights over the coming months. All the acts performing will be paid solely from box office takings, as the theatre is being run as a charity, so make sure you get booking now and support this amazing venture. The events kick off on October 24 with Bootleg Abba, £12.50. On October 31, rock legends Wishbone Ash will be taking you through the decades, £15. The Wonderstuff, supported by The Lounge will be playing on November 29, £12. To book, call 01780 754829 or 01780 763203. Liv Slater

DEALER TIP

“A real charmer inside and out, generous space for four adults. A little city car that reminds me of the original Citroen 2CV with its character and honest simplicity. However, the boot is tiny and I like to do a lot of shopping at once!”

JOURNEY TO THE SEVEN WONDERS… Everyone’s talking money, economy and affordability so we asked the team at Marshall Dodge to tell us the seven best things about their new seven seater Dodge Journey. Just why should you consider even taking a trip to the dealership let alone the bank when money’s tight? We challenged the team to come up with seven wonderful things about this vehicle and they say you should be prepared to be impressed, amazed and surprised just how good this car is for the money. Having observed what the alternatives are, Alan Wensak the Dealer Principal is firmly of the opinion that this model takes some beating against another full size seven seater – “We are talking FULL SIZE and comfortable!”

Marshall’s Magnificent Seven 1. PETER MODEN SALES MANAGER

“The best news I can give you is the exceptional value the whole range offers with the Petrol 2.4litre SE starting at just £16,995 and 2.0 CRD Diesel just £17,995. Need an Automatic? You get the most efficient gear box on the market, the DGS Automatic starts at £21,195.”

2. HANIF NAJFI

6. CLAIRE GORDON

“As a family man the practical side of this car is tremendous, with all the space you’d ever need. As a footballer I’m always being asked to ferry adults about and this just eats them up in comfort. Check it out against the competition!”

“MPG from the diesel is an impressive 43.5 mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions meaning just £170 a year Road Tax. It’s extremely safe having these standard options and features: Air bags almost everywhere, ISOFIX child seat anchoring points, ESP that includes Brake Assist, Traction Control and Electronic Roll Mitigation and Trailer Sway Control. Impressive stuff: making this an extremely safe Motor Car to travel in.”

SALES EXECUTIVE

3. STEVE STINDERS SALES EXECUTIVE

“I like my cars to handle and drive like a sports car does and spookily this has all the attributes of my Crossfire. The feel through the steering wheel is quite something and I suggest you give it a try. The car looks great, with the typical Dodge Cross Hair Grille making this car stand out on the road.”

4. SAM EVANS SALES EXECUTIVE

“I like the younger features and I’m bowled over with the sound system and MyGIG information system that gives the very latest Satellite Navigation info along with a Premium Sound System that ‘knocks your socks off’ plus the funky rear back-up camera for reversing without breaking your neck. You have to listen to the sound system to appreciate just how good it is.”

SERVICE ADVISOR

7. RAY CRAWFORD

SERVICE ADVISOR AND WORKSHOP CONTROLLER

“The Journey has a service interval of 9000 on the Diesel and 8000 miles on the petrol with three years 60,000 manufactures warranty on all cars. I love the conversation mirror and the fact that the rear passengers are able to enjoy Air Conditioning the same as the front seat passengers. It’s not a ‘man thing’ but I think the car looks great in the new Deep Water Blue metallic paint!”

5. SALLY ARMOUR SERVICE MANAGER

“The diesel engines fitted to these cars courtesy of Volkswagen and the petrol engine called a ‘World Engine’ from Mitsubishi and Hyundai give arguably the best engines on the market today. The diesel gives 138bhp and petrol 168bhp. More than you need to propel these great cars along the road in comport. The six speed manual gearbox has a short and sporty feel, making the driving enjoyable.”

Louis Smith

He’s a World Champion, an Olympic medal winner and he’s got a whole lot more to come all at the age of 19. ESP’s Joanne Quinney catches up with Louis Smith at his home to see how life has changed for the Peterborough lad…

Arranging to interview an Olympic medal winner is a tough task. Louis Smith’s diary is full, and I mean full! He says himself he’s got “too much on”, but chats openly about life during and after the Olympics. What I also wanted to find out was what Louis was into; as I’m sure the 19 year-old is getting asked a lot of the same questions right now! Of course it goes without saying that upon entry Louis and his mum are very down-to-earth and friendly, and were extremely welcoming into their home, especially after a hard day’s training. What did strike me immediately was how fame and media attention has not yet gone to Louis’ head, and how modest he is. I hope this doesn’t change. I had to congratulate him on being the first Briton since 1908 to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics, I’m sure he has heard this a few times but it’s a massive achievement! Did he feel the pressure though? “I didn’t really care what other people were saying. I don’t think anyone expected me to get a medal. I wanted to go there and do a good routine and come back with the goods. It was more pressure on myself.” So is the training routine still as strict as before Beijing? “The only routine that’s changed is my training routine, I haven’t really done any pommel routines. I’ve just come back from holiday; we stayed in a caravan in Yarmouth so had a good time there.” So how is he coping with his new found fame and all this media attention? “It’s just been crazy with all the media work, and it still is for the next two weeks or so. I’m going to see the Mayor, do some TV interviews, open up a gym in Birmingham, do another advert for EDF Energy, and loads more.” It sounds busy! However is it enjoyable? “It’s good fun but it can get a bit much sometimes. Some Saturdays when I look forward to resting my coach says ‘No Louis you’ve got to go to London’ to do this or that.” With this busy schedule and a training routine consisting of six times a week, twice a

72

www.esp3.net ( October ) w w w.

day, does Louis ever let his hair down and party? “We had a week to rest when we were out there, after I’d finished competing and had some celebratory drinks. When I got back I had two weekends and went out with my friends and got VIP treatment, so I had a good time.” Are there any rules on going out during his training? “I don’t tend to go out four or five weeks before a competition, and I have competitions quite a lot!” Are there any hotspots in Peterborough where you might catch Louis? “I like that new club, Baccarra, and then I go on to Liquid.”

Louis grabbing a few rare minutes to relax at home

We can tell this new Olympian is rushed off his feet, with a schedule to rival any socialite, but how has his daily life changed since being home? “Little things like walking down the street and people stop me. When I was in Baccarra on my first weekend back the manager came down and asked if I would like to be a VIP and he congratulated me. Things like that are good fun.” Does the young star have any sporting heroes, anyone who’s inspired him to get into the sport? “Definitely Mohammed Ali, he’s a great idol, and a gymnast called Vitali Scherbo, he’s a very special gymnast.” Vitali Scherbo has been named perhaps the greatest male gymnast of all time, having won six Olympic gold medals and a record 14 World Championship gold medals in his career. No wonder Louis looks up to him! I had to ask the inevitable – has he given London 2012 much thought yet? “It’s a long way off. People keep saying to me ‘Gold next time Louis’ but I don’t think they realise what’s its going to take to get there. I’ve got the World Championships next year and the year after the European Championships in Birmingham, so I’ve got a lot of other competitions yet.” Does he think winning an Olympic medal has advantages or disadvantages when going into another competition? “A bit of both. It’s good because then people know who I am, but then everyone has this expectation of me and if I don’t perform they might think I’m not training hard enough. But our gym is full if distractions at the minute with kids running round when you’re trying to train, but we’re trying to build a new gym. For a competition I switch into competition mode. I don’t know how I do it but it works!”

Proud mum glad to have Louis home

Joanne, Louis and that medal!

It’s safe to say it does. There was so much to talk about, like him dancing in a nightclub next to 100 and 200 metre world record holder Usain Bolt! However I didn’t want to keep him too much longer. It’s interesting to see how hard a local lad has worked to achieve something great, and brought gymnastics into the spotlight especially for the men. He’s going to be busy, but by the sounds of things he’s very focused and determined as well as enjoying it all – the way a 19 year-old should!

You can grab a bite to eat and drink from the various outlets at the rink, including a large café, alcohol can be purchased from the bar and can you can even enjoy your bevies back at your seat in the main ice arena.

The city’s premier ice hockey team, The Peterborough Phantoms, hit the ice this month when their new season starts. The team, who play at the Planet Ice Arena in Bretton, have completed their pre-season games, which included victory over their local rivals the Milton Keynes Lightning to claim The Ashes – their first silverware of the season.

During the intervals, there are two in ice hockey, Lite FM DJ Mike Clarke and helpers continue the entertainment with on-ice competitions. The intervals also give supporters the chance to visit the club’s merchandise stand, selling a variety of Phantoms’ branded goodies, or enter the ‘Shirt Off Your Back’ draw to win one of the players’ shirts at the end of the game.

The Phantoms generally play away each Saturday, and then at home each Sunday with games starting at 5.30pm. A night out at a Phantoms match is great family entertainment with the fun starting as soon as you walk into the Arena. Fans are entertained by Tom, the 6ft Polar Bear who is
