An open day is planned for local people to have a sneaky peek before the main opening – we can’t wait!

RANDALL ROOTZ IS BIG SUCCESS We’re pleased to tell you that Peterborough’s third annual Randall Rootz Festival raised a massive £2,400 for Thorpe Hall Hospice. The cash was donated over the three days of the city festival, which was supported by ESP, by thousands of revellers at the festival venues, The Brewery Tap and Charters pub and beer garden. New Beautiful South played their first gig in Peterborough and opened the festival at The Tap, then almost 20 acts performed at Charters on the Saturday and Sunday, with a team of volunteers collecting for Sue Ryder Care’s Thorpe Hall Hospice. The Randall Rootz Festival was set up in 2007 in memory of city percussionist Mark Randall, who sadly died that year from cancer. He was cared for at Sue Ryder Care’s Thorpe Hall Hospice in his final weeks and family and friends set up Randall Rootz to continue his work promoting music and culture in Peterborough.

CINEMA WITH A DIFFERENCE Peterborough Arts Cinema’s season continues this month at John Clare Theatre, Broadway with a selection of films designed to make you think. Il Divo, showing on October 1, tells the story of Andreotto, a former Italian Prime Minister who remained in politics until the age of 90, despite accusations of corruption and links to the Mafia. A deadpan comedy, the film shows him imagining a confession to his wife, which would explain his part in 236 deaths, including that of Aldo Moro, his political rival who was kidnapped and killed after Andreotti refused to negotiate a ransom. Things get a little lighter on October 8 for Anvil! The Story of Anvil, which sees a former roadie catch up with 70s metal band Anvil and records their last shot at stardom. With hints of Spinal Tap, this looks at friendship, loyalty and the power of metal. If romance is more your thing, Blue Eyelids from Mexico on October 15 is a refreshingly unique take on the boy-meets-girl plot. Marina wins a luxury beach holiday for two as part of an
The Damned United, shown on October 22, tells the story of famously cantankerous football manager Brian Clough’s spell of management at Leeds United. Not just one for football fans, Michael Sheen gives a brilliantly cruel but fun portrayal of one man’s fall from grace. Halloween starts early at the Arts Cinema, with Let The Right One In on October 29, a spooky but emotionally involving vampire film from Sweden. Based on a book, the film tells the story of Oskar, a young but isolated boy who makes friends with Eli, a girl who has just moved near him, except that she is a vampire and despite the body count Oskar can’t let go of her. Tickets for non-members are £5, for more information call into Central Library on Broadway or visit www.peterboroughartscinema.co.uk. There’ll be a real carnival atmosphere along the streets of Peterborough, with competitors travelling from all over the country. Barry Fry said – "I’m proud to be playing a part in this year's run. It’s a fantastic event that will attract lots of people to the city. Good luck to everyone who’s signed up!" FIREWORK FIESTA
A TASTE HALLOWEEN OF LA BEER FEST DOLCE VITA
This year’s Firework Fiesta at Ferry Meadows should be a real scream as it falls on Halloween! Already one of the largest fireworks displays in the East, this year they expect at least 15,000 people to turn up. The ESP team will be there again taking photos and giving out goodies and local radio station Lite FM are once again hosting the main stage. Programme Controller Gregg Nunney told ESP – “I'm made up that Lite FM are hosting Firework Fiesta again this year – it's always a huge event, even if the rain is bad like last year! From 5pm we'll be joined on stage by up and coming performers Mikey Matteo, Ashleigh Askew and local stars Craig Saggers and ESP’s own columnist and Lite FM contributor, singer Susan Saunders.” Gregg added – “We'll also be joined by the Mayor for the lighting of the bonfire, and at around 7.30pm we'll count down to this year's spectacular firework display. As it all takes place on October 31, we want as many people as possible to come dressed for Halloween – whether it's a vampire, ghoul, goblin, banker or politician! ESP will be taking lots of photos and the costume that we judge the best after the event will win a fab prize – no tricks! This is definitely a treat.” Organised by the local Rotary Club and Round Table, all proceeds go to local charities and over £300,000 has been raised so far. Committee chairman John Hill is looking forward to it – “We’ve expanded the firework display and we’re spending almost £17,000 so it’ll be absolutely fantastic. Without a doubt this is in the top ten displays in East Anglia. We have fantastic support from several voluntary groups and the proceeds all benefit local chairities.” To make the night truly special, Nene Valley Railway are running a special service from Peterborough and Wansford to Ferry Meadows, for more details call 01780 784444. Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for children in advance on 01733 452336 or a pound more on the gates which open at 4pm with the fireworks going off about 7.30pm. Tickets for a car are £25 and must be bought in advance. www.fireworkfiesta.com

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE For trick or treating with a twist, try the Halloween Ghost Walks organised by Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery, itself reputedly one of the most haunted buildings in the city, which run twice a night on October 27 – 31. Tickets are £5 on 01733 343329.
Peterborough’s Italian community will be celebrating in style on October 18 when the city centre will be turned into Rome in miniature. The Peterborough Italian Community Association turns 25 this month and Bridge Street will be filled with Italian market stalls, demonstrations from Italian chefs, street theatre, Ferraris and Aprilia scooters as well as special exhibitions at the Museum. There’ll be live entertainment outside the Town Hall from the Lite FM roadshow – the hall itself will be lit in red, green and white – and to close the party in spectacular style, a fireworks display.
Tired of the same old beers? Head to Charters on October 30 – November 1 for the Autumn Beer Festival, with over 30 different real ales, ciders and perrys, which includes a few Halloween-themed beers. They’re also playing host to a fancy dress party on Halloween night itself, October 31, with prizes for the best costumes and DJs. Get practising the Monster Mash!
If live music is more your thing, Double Handsome Dragons, Point Seven Pistol, The Hendo San Project and The Offlight will be playing at the Brewery Tap, as part of a fancy dress party organized by Art and Soul Magazine. Entry to both events is free.
SPOOKY PARTY @ THE CELLAR BAR For a more intimate Halloween party, head to the Cellar Bar at Thorpe Lodge Hotel on October 31, where the lights will be dim and the walls deep red. If that’s not spooky enough, there’ll be karaoke, (which always has the potential to be truly horrifying when we’re singing!), as well as a disco.
OKTOBERFEST IN STAMFORD There’s no need to travel to Germany to get a taste of Oktoberfest – Lady Anne’s Hotel in Stamford will be hosting a special themed night on October 3. RIDES AND SAUSAGES
SOME PEOPLE THINK THEY’RE CONKERS… The World Conker Championship is one of those unique, slightly eccentric, British institutions and this year, it takes place on October 11 at New Lodge Fields, Polebrook, just outside Oundle. All money raised goes to RNIB and competitors gather from all across the world, with previous winners come from as far away as Mexico and Austria. There are men’s, women’s and junior tournaments, so the whole family can take part and it’s certainly a different day out! For more info, visit www.worldconkerchampionships.com
The annual Bridge Fair kicks off this year on October 6 with a sausage supper with the Mayor at the Town Hall. A procession will leave at 6pm and go to the Embankment, where the Mayor will read an opening declaration from 1878, which begs all visitors to ‘behave soberly and civilly, and to pay their just dues and demands’ – looks like the city’s not changed much over the years! After trying a few of the rides and rollercoasters, you can then return to the Town Hall and enjoy a dinner of bangers and mash, veggie beancakes or spicy Greek sausages in tomato sauce. All money raised will go to the Mayor’s charities, which are Young Carers (PCVS); Peterborough Samaritans, and Sue Ryder Care's Thorpe Hall Hospice Tickets £12, £8 for children. Box office: Town Hall or 01733 452319.
BRIDES ON A BUDGET Looking to get married, but struggling to afford it? The Cresset’s cme up with a solution that could help you celebrate without compromise – an offer of room hire and a two-course meal for just £22.95 per person! There’ll be two live fashion shows at noon and 2.30pm, with the show opening at 10.30am. For more info contact 01733 265705.

WHICH ACCESSORY? If you can't stop turning to the cover and checking out our new Face of ESP, Tori Bradshaw (read her interview in Man About Town next month) then I can't blame you. She looks well hot! And so do I of course, pictured in my new tuxedo courtesy of Moss Bros in Bridge Street, Peterborough who kitted me out for a smidgen over £100! Question is, which accessory in these photos best compliments the suit? The lovely and luscious Lydia Fahy (yum) who was one of our photographers on the night, or one of our main judges, Lite FM's Keith Dalton?
Why ebay when I can Man About Town? I'm selling my private plate (pictured). You don't have to be called Pep, but if your name is Paula Elizabeth Phillipson or Paddy Ethan Patterson and you happen to be 33 years old or just like the number 33 then email me and snatch my hand off.

A survey’s revealed that 70% of us in relationships have sex with our eyes closed. Ladies be thankful. If guaranteeing regular rumpy pumpy in a relationship means closing his eyes and fantasising about Megan Fox then so be it. But if you insist on him keeping his eyes open then be sure to lock up your fit friend, sexy sister and experienced mother.

MAXIMUM POINTS ON AND OFF THE FIELD It was great to be at London Road to see Posh pick up their first league win of the season against Reading – and even better to see how we did it when George Boyd guided home a clever back-heel injury time winner. Credit to the lads for fighting back from 2-0 down and credit also to the club for bringing back the old 'Argentina' away shirt from the late 1970s, which you can buy from the club shop or at www.theposh.com. If my Posh history serves me well, the club were relegated when this strip was introduced but there's no danger of that happening this season. I was lucky enough to enjoy the game as a Club 75 guest of Ian Jacobs from MacIntyre Hudson in the Noel Cantwell Suite and was impressed with how the club's catering and hospitality function as come on in recent years. My thanks to Ian and a big shout to Posh's Horris Jones who looked after us. Respect also to the club's photographer Joe Dent who picked us out in the stand from his position at the London Road end thanks to a lens that looked no bigger than Dean Keates.

LA DOLCE VITA COMES TO OUR CITY CENTRE A festival of all things Italian takes place in our city centre on Sunday October 18 from 2.30pm until 7.30pm when Peterborough’s Italian Community Association celebrates its 25th anniversary. I'll be there tucking into the Italian market, scoffing the best food in the world dished up by proper Italian chefs and seeing if I can get away with riding an Aprilla scooter up and down Long Causeway. There'll be Ferraris on display too and plenty of entertainment and reminders that Italy are still football world champions, plus there's an exhibition of Italian history and culture at Peterborough Museum. Best of all the Town Hall will be lit up in Italian colours after dark and the celebrations end with a fireworks display. For more information or to get involved, call 01733 452280.

WILL I FIND LOVE AT WORK? So we're heading towards the end of the year and I thought it was time to take a look back at my love forecast, kindly done for this column back in February by local clairvoyant and astrologer Katie Lancashire. Katie said – "July and December are key months for sexual intensity, exciting and passionate times in your love life. Romance could actually blossom at work. She’ll be patient, loving, quick witted and will fulfil all your needs. She's not materialistic and will make you laugh and feel so happy. Don't be surprised if she’s slightly older than you." Mmm... Let's take July for starters. Looking back, the only sexual intensity I remember experiencing was when The Sun announced the winner of their Page 3 Idol competition (Kelly Hall, yummy). December's not far away now but to be honest you'll get better odds on me cooking a Christmas turkey roast for the entire family than finding romance with one of the lovely ladies at work. Yes, as Katie says, they may be patient, loving (in a biblical way of course) quick witted and fulfil my (work) needs but none of them are slightly older than me. In fact, most are slightly younger than me. Katie, perhaps she works in another department then?!

Bearded Bristolian Justin Lee Collins was in town to promote his book ‘Good Times!’ and hundreds of fans turned out to meet the funny man who was on top form. He had me and the rest of the ESP team in stitches and took a bit of a shine to our promotions girl Sadie who stroked his long locks and announced she wouldn’t be washing her hands ever again. He didn’t leave out our new Face of ESP Tori – she got plenty of cuddles and a sloppy kiss! After tens of thousands of hits on her X Factor audition on YouTube and more friends on Facebook than she can count, Nicole Lawrence is still reeling from the huge wave of interest she’s generated. Having won over ‘Mr Nasty’, Simon Cowell, this girl is going for it. Yet again Peterborough has another up-and-coming celebrity in its midst proving once and for all that this city of ours sure does have talent... and another good reason to be glued to the box. After cheering on Aston and JLS last year, watching local actors David Proud and Himesh Patel on Eastenders and Luke Pasqualino in Skins we now have a city girl to support. 31 year-old Nicole Lawrence is already a familiar face to many having appeared at many local events with her dad Greg ‘The Big Man’ Lawrence. Her story of how her beloved dad had urged her to enter the TV talent show just hours before he sadly passed away in December has struck a chord with viewers and she’s been amazed by the level of interest. “I’ve watched X Factor for years and nobody gets that much attention that early on,” Nicole told ESP, “so I was stunned. It’s a family show and I guess people like a nice story.” Her dad Greg won a place in Peterborough people’s hearts long ago and Nicole had become as much of a local name as she performed with him in recent years at dozens of events. As her voice developed though, she’d always harboured a desire to try out for the show. “I’d wanted to enter for years but because I worked with my dad and we were doing well I hadn’t pursued it.
“We were in the car on the way to the airport to go to Germany for a gig and on the way down we were talking about the X Factor final and how it was a shame we were going to be away because I’d like to watch it. For the first time he said – ‘If you want to enter, you go for it girl’. It was quite poignant that he said it on that car journey and an hour or so later he died. “Strangely X Factor has actually helped with the grieving process because it’s given everyone something else to focus on. The first audition was back in April so it was quite soon after dad died and it’s just been full on ever since. “Dad will never be forgotten but it’s nice to get his name out there and for other people to remember him. We used to be a duet so this is my fresh start into music as a solo performer. It’s taught me that life is short and you need to make the most of it.” Over 200,000 people went in for X Factor so to have even auditioned would’ve be an achievement in itself but finding herself at Simon Cowell’s house in the next stage of the competition truly stunned her. Especially as Simon was originally against her. “I really respect and admire Simon and when I’ve watched I’ve always tended to agree with him and he rarely gets it wrong, so it was important to me to get a yes from him but at the first audition it wasn’t to be. I took his advice though and worked really hard. “Boot camp is very intense, it’s a long week. You really get to see your competition up close and when you see teenagers belting out songs it’s quite daunting.” Nicole’s had no formal training but has been singing since she was at school and is hoping that working with the professionals on the show can hone her skills and kick those ‘bad habits’ Simon was hung up on. Appearing on television hasn’t been quite as daunting for Nicole as it has been for some. Ten years ago she followed in her father’s footsteps and appeared on Stars in their Eyes as Etta James. Around five years ago she took part in the TV show Fit Farm and she’s been on what was Hereward Radio as Black Thunder girl ‘Nurse Nicole’ when she took on a variety of on-air challenges. Now following in the wake of local lad Aston and last year’s X Factor runners up JLS, Nicole is pleased to be adding to the city’s celebrity status - “We’re certainly putting Peterborough on the map and showing this city has some real X Factor!” Mum Bettina (a big fan of reality shows) younger brother Ben and hubby Brian are all behind Nicole 100% and so are we. Fortunately for Nicole, her husband Brian runs the Garden of Eden holistic therapies centre on Park Road so when it comes to calming her nerves he’s just the man for the job!

Stamford’s pub goers have been given a helping hand in finding their way around the town’s inns, bars and clubs with the help of a new map that I think’s a pretty hot idea...
Photo: Mike Harris
The Stamford Pub Map has just been launched and aims to point people in the direction of the type of pub they’re looking for by using a system not dissimilar from the London Underground map. Looking for a pub that has a beer garden and sells real ale? Just follow the green and red line to point you in the right direction.
PERFORMERS WANTED FOR CANDYLAND
The map started out as a conversation between Jolly Brewer licensee Dean Baker and graphic designer Mark Buttress over a pint (or two). After a few different versions, the final draft is now in print and will no doubt be found on the bar in your local. Jolly Brewer landlady, Jill Perkins told ESP – “The initial reaction to the map has been great! We’ve had several groups of tourists in the pub recently along with all our regular customers and everyone’s said how much they love the idea.” If your local’s run out, you can download a copy from the website www.stamfordpubmap.co.uk.
So, did you catch the sell-out show Candyland at the Corn Exchange Theatre recently?
NEW THREADS AT IBSON
Written and directed by Lucy Slessor this Gothic fairy tale performed in burlesque style went down a storm. The work was partly inspired by Lucy wanting to raise money and awareness for ASBAH the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalous charity and for Sue Ryder Care.
It’s always good to see some new stores opening and if you haven’t dropped in yet take a look at new fashion shop Ibson on St. Mary’s Street in Stamford.
If you missed it, the Candyland Burlesque Troupe can be seen performing excerpts of the show on October 17 at Goodbarn’s Yard in Peterborough. Currently they’re looking for more actors and dancers to carry them through to the 2010 season so if you're interested contact Lucy Slessor on candylandpr@google.com
The shop currently stocks items from Nicole Farhi, Nom de Guerre, Folk and Acne and will soon add the Fred Perry Laurel range. Owners Chris and Melanie tell us they’re dedicated to offering excellent customer service including booking out of hours appointments and bringing a fresh new look at fashion to Stamford. You can bet I’ll be popping into their funky store soon!

Did you know Peterborough’s lucky enough to have its own specialist team ready to swoop in and deal with the problems we most want solving? If your problem’s on the list, they are coming in!
MEET THE ‘A’ TEAM
The Neighbourhood Intervention Team (NIT) are our very own band of crime fighting ‘super heroes’ if you like, and the team’s the first of its type in the constabulary. Made up of six PCs and led by Sgt Mick Thorpe, NIT can be sent in at short notice to tackle anything from drugs to anti-social behaviour. Whatever the biggest problem is in your neighbourhood, these are the guys who’ll stamp it out. ESP joined the team on a recent dawn drugs raid in Ravensthorpe/Woodston where they found a house in the middle of a housing estate had been turned into a cannabis factory. PC Bob Stewart told ESP – “This was a really successful warrant for us. We’re constantly cracking down on drugs activities and after intelligence from various sources, including local people which is essential, we were able to act decisively. We found one of the largest mother bushes I’ve ever seen, 39 seedlings and pills we think are ecstasy so this will have hit the dealer hard. If you see anything suspicious always report it – it does make a difference.” It’s not always the drama of a drugs raid that keeps these guys busy though – whatever the community has a problem with and their local beat officers pick up on; the NIT can be called in to stamp it out. The team’s tackled anti-social behaviour in Lawson
Avenue, Stanground, burglaries in rural areas and problems caused by youngsters on exam leave from school. At the start of the summer Stanley Road recreation ground in Peterborough was suffering from a longstanding problem of drinking and related anti-social behaviour. The local neighbourhood team had been tackling the drinkers, who were often intimidating people but as they were still making themselves a nuisance it was time to call in the NIT. Pretty soon afterwards people were using the area for picnics, schools were using it for classes and there were no signs of any drinkers. Job done.
local people to tell them why they are there. “We can deal with any neighbourhood priority or issue that needs swift and intensive action, such as anti-social behaviour, drinking and vehicle enforcement,” said Sgt Thorpe. “These are the sort of issues that would require planning and time for neighbourhood teams to address but can be tackled almost immediately by the NIT.” The team can be called into any area in the city where needed and work hand in hand with local officers drawing on their local knowledge and expertise before going in. Once the problem’s been solved the team will withdraw – but will return if needed.
Sgt Mick Thorpe, who leads the team, pulls no punches and addressed the problem head-on. First they provided a visible presence and advised drinkers that boozing on the rec was against the law then they fined or arrested those who just wouldn’t listen.
Sgt Thorpe added – “This is just a smarter way of doing things because working as a team is better than the individual officers being tied to particular areas.
“The neighbourhood team which covers the area didn’t have enough officers to tackle the problem head-on at short notice, but we’re able to do just that,” said Sgt Thorpe.
“The officers on the team also have fewer commitments than other reactive and neighbourhood officers so it frees them up to deal with the issues that people want us to deal with.
“That’s one of the secrets to the team’s success – it can deploy at short notice, if required, and target all its resources at one issue.”
“It means that residents can have even more influence if they attend their regular neighbourhood panel meetings. This is where priorities for areas are set and these are the priorities the NIT will be tackling.”

TICKLED PINK
EASY ON THE EYE
What’s most girls’ favourite colour? Pink! And there’s no better colour to be wearing this month as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to Cancer Research UK more than 45,000 women a year are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK and figures also show that rates for the disease have increased over the years. In order to help increase the awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, the whole of October is dedicated to doing so with major breast cancer charities, including The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Breast Cancer Campaign helping raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure.
BB’s Brow Bar has recently opened in Queensgate and is the shopping centre’s first walk-in beauty bar. With no appointment necessary it’s quick and easy to pop in, perfect if you’re on your lunch break or simply in a rush. They specialise in threading, an ancient art of hair removal, which has been used in the Far East for many years.
A variety of health and beauty products have been launched to help support the cause so you can look gorgeous and help do your bit for breast cancer at the same time. Avon has joined in with a great range of products including a Special Edition Glimmerstick Eyeliner in Crusade Black (£5.00 of which £1.25 will be donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer). Once again ghd is in the pink for Breakthrough Breast Cancer with a new ghd Pink Limited Edition box set which contains ghd IV hairstyler in a beautiful baby pink shade, bag, styler pouch, hairbrush and sectioning clips (www.ghdhair.com). Priced at £135, £10 from each sale will be donated to Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Of course with all these pretty pink products it’s easy to forget what the real objective behind the campaign is – to make women more breast aware. So take time to become familiar with your breasts and what is normal for you. Remember the five point breast awareness code: 1) Know what is normal for you 2) Look and feel on a regular basis 3) Know what changes to look for 4) Report any changes straight away 5) Attend breast screening if aged 50 and over
BUY OF THE MONTH… Rimmel’s latest mascara, Max Volume Flash Mascara, is our buy of the month for October. Creating big lashes has never been so easy. With their biggest brush ever you can build volume quickly and precisely without clumps creating up to 14 x lash volume. This product really does work and should be a make-up staple that’s in every girl’s handbag. Plus, the cute pink packaging just makes it even more irresistible.

Practiced in China, India and the Middle East, threading uses twisted cotton thread to remove unwanted hair by lifting the hair directly from the follicle, leaving you with very precise results. It’s less painful than plucking or waxing so is the perfect alternative especially if you have sensitive skin as the top layer of skin is not stripped off in the process, leaving you rash free. I popped along to BB’s Brow Bar to find out for myself just how good threading was. Usually an avid fan of tweezers I came away thinking ‘I’m never going back to plucking again’. I couldn’t believe how quick it was and in fact it’s quite relaxing. The results were great; it’s surprising how a small change to the shape and thickness of your eyebrows can make such a difference to your face and really open up your eyes. The staff were skilled and friendly so I’ll definitely be going back. Surprisingly, threading is also becoming increasingly popular with men as it’s cheap, quick and pain free. Say goodbye to that monobrow boys! They also offer a wide range of other beauty treatments including manicures, eyelash and eyebrow tinting and henna body art – perfect for a big night out. With October’s special offer of Nail Art for £7 there’s even more reason to pop along and treat yourself.

know some of you take longer to get ready whilst you get the hair perfectly sculpted with your gel!) The hair needs good nutrition and a healthy body to produce soft, lush hair. Constant colour treatments can make it a bit sad looking after a time if not looked after properly, but certainly the following are common bad hair complaints... Greasy hair Dry, brittle hair Bald patches Dandruff Slow growth Lots of split ends, despite good cuts
For good healthy looking hair we need... • Essential fats – the word ‘essential’ means we have to get them from food as we don’t make them inside us • Vitamins B, A and D – can be lacking in many diets • Zinc – can be depleted due to smoking, sugar, stress etc • Selenium – low intake affects efficiency of thyroid and liver detoxification • Good quality protein • Good whole grains which provide more nutrients/fibre
Our state of overall health can affect the hair; so many factors need to be considered –
• Hormone levels
KAREN’S TIPS
• Thyroid function – overactive or slightly underactive can affect hair condition
1. Take out the refined carbohydrates and sugars from your diet as much as possible
• Smoking – just about everything to do with health is affected by this weed
2. Get some good fats in your diet (oily fish, eggs, seeds, a little avocado, olive oils, flax etc.)
• Definitely foods – what you put in you’ll get out
We’ve all had those days when you can do nothing with you hair. But what if your bad hair day seems to be a permanent feature in your life because of dry, brittle or lifeless hair? Wouldn’t it be great if we were all like the old Sindy dolls – push a button at the back and we have long, lush hair? OK, perhaps not for the lads but generally if our hair feels good we feel good. My most memorable bad hair year (well, it seemed like a year) was having my hair cut short because I wouldn’t stop chewing it. Mum thought it would be a good idea as the hair would cause a hair ball in my stomach (so she told me back then). Mind you, the flat chest and the short hair really didn’t do much for my young femininity back then… thanks mum! Women generally spend hundreds of pounds on hair cuts, hair colours, extensions, hair products and of course the electrical gadgets from dryers to strengtheners. Sure a few men out there do too (I
• Recreational drugs • Some medical drugs – some have nutritional interactions • Nutritional deficiencies (yes, in the midst of plenty many people are malnourished) • Yeast infections – can lower immunity and overload the body which can affect the hair condition and scalp • Toxins in the environment (inc. heavy metals such as mercury) • Stress – affects our nutrient levels and can cause tension on the scalp • Too high, or even too low, protein intake • Low iron levels • High protein/low carb diets – can affect thyroid long term so be careful not to be carb free for too long • Low calorie diets… and much more
3. Deal with your stress 4. Determine if you’re having hormonal or thyroid problems 5. Up your nutrient intake by increasing fruit/veg and by using whole grains (dark green leafy veg as well as the sweeter types like carrots) 6. Get as much fresh, clean food as possible which is as near to its natural state as possible 7. Cut back on the addictions in your life!

SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL

As I sat and watched the world go by on a beautifully sunny and… well just allround beautiful day in Florence, Tuscany, sipping wine with the girls, I thought what a far cry this was to my other city break/hen do in Barcelona. This was a very tame break by comparison. Both breaks were strictly girls only; however pesky males kept rearing their ugly heads and getting in our way. And these males will stop at nothing to get attention as I found out! Is it me or do all men seem to have an exhibitionist inbuilt in them? Whether it’s streakers, mooners or just down right inappropriate behaviour, guys always have the need to show themselves off to an unwilling audience. Take my break to Barcelona this summer for example. Exhibit A. The girls and I were obviously in a civilised part of the world because hen party attire was practically banned from every single establishment that we visited so off we trotted in our classiest, most pristine wear – we didn’t want to be seen on that cringe-worthy TV show (WWOMS – What Would Our Mothers Say?) and called outrageous Brits abroad.
28
www.espmag.co.uk ( October )
When we saw an elderly man appearing from behind an over-sized planter in the street I thought – ‘Here we go, yet another person begging for just one Euuuuuro,’ (one man asked me for 20 euros – can you believe the cheek?). But this beggar looked different. He was an elderly ‘gentleman’ with chino shorts, a good hair cut and a pair of what looked like moccasins on his tanned feet. In place of the usual holey and weathered shopping bag carrying all of the beggar/homeless person’s worldly belongings was instead a crisp, under filled, large plastic bag. The ‘gentleman's’ stare was fixed on our hen party and he was now standing completely clear of the large planter. As we neared, each of us tightening our grip on our purses and clutch bags, the man’s bag began to lower. Any second now he’d extend an
outstretched hand asking for our hard-earned cash. Wait a minute, no outstretched arm. Uh oh. I thought to myself – ‘Is that really his… bare winkle picker that I can see? Surely not!’ Then one of the girls confirmed my fears shouting out – “That guy’s got his (cockney rhyme) Double Decker out!” And there it was. I had encountered my first flasher. Why was it that this man thought it was a good idea to bare all as we walked down the street, minding our own business? Just in case we hadn’t seen it the first time… the bag was repeatedly being lifted and dropped.
I was astounded. The dirty old goat – did he have no shame?! All this, in a town where a few hen party ‘not-a-chance-are-youallowed-in-here’ badges are banned but flashers are allowed apparently? As if in secret ‘package’ approval, many a man walked past and didn’t shelter our eyes but just walked on by. I was baffled and dare I say, ever-so-slightly amused! Anyway, back to Florence – ‘twas so serene and relaxed… relaxed and serene.
Sat in the restaurant overlooking the river, I breathed a sigh of relief. The Italian men wouldn’t allow a flasher to stand brazenly in the street, no, they would arrest him. And here comes Exhibit B. All was fine until our waiter Vincent decided to serve us Lemoncello x3 and proceed to tell us about his previous role as a male escort (was there no escape?!). We exchanged dubious glances with each other, as Vincent told us how he travelled the world whilst exotic women picked up the tab. There he stood, uninvited for twenty minutes telling us how he got paid well for these trips but that he was worth every penny! Cringe. So there you go, if it’s not some flasher in Spain, or an international play boy in Italy, it’s the unsuspecting every day guys you encounter – strutting their stuff in the office, showing you their ‘white bits’ on a night out (even though they haven’t been on holiday this year) or talking about their mate’s HUGE… sandwich. Maybe this behaviour dates back to the caveman when the best hunter-gatherer got his pick of the ladies? Who knows? Either way there’s no escape from this genitalia-obsessed species. Be warned – they’re coming to a street near you!

Partners help make the city safer Being creative in communicating fire prevention messages to communities is something our firefighters have always been very good at. Whether it’s visiting schools or carrying out home safety checks - the fire service is constantly reminding us how to prevent fires starting. By being one of the responsible organisations that make up the SaferPeterborough partnership (chaired by Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Chris Strickland), the fire prevention message is spread even further across the city. SaferPeterborough is a community safety partnership consisting of a collection of organisations who work together to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, ensuring Peterborough’s a place where people feel safe to live, work and visit. The responsible organisations, by law, for the work of the partnership are: • • • • •
Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service Peterborough City Council Cambridgeshire Constabulary NHS Peterborough Cambridgeshire Police Authority
They all work together with other agencies from the public and voluntary sector and community groups. Government requires the partnership to produce a plan that sets out priority areas to tackle.
48
www.espmag.co.uk ( October )
The six focus areas are: 1. Serious acquisitive crime 2. Anti-social behaviour 3. Domestic abuse 4. Violent crime 5. Sexual offences 6. Road safety These areas have been identified as part of a ‘strategic assessment’ that paints a picture of what crime and disorder’s like in our city. The partnership also listens to the public at neighbourhood panels, Face the People consultation events and Weeks of Action. During SaferPeterborough Weeks of Action the fire service and numerous other organisations are able to meet the public and promote safety messages as part of a focus on reducing crime and disorder. Various activities and events are hosted to help spread messages about creating a safer and more confident community. One activity that always draws the crowds is the fire service’s chip pan fire demonstration. Cooking is the cause of the largest number of fire-related injuries in the home. Firefighters illustrate what happens when water’s thrown on over-heated oil that’s caught fire. The result is a massive explosion and an out-of-control fire. The message here is never throw water over a chip
pan fire. Turn off the heat if it’s safe to do so and never lean over the pan to reach the cooker controls. If the fire’s spread get out of the house closing the door behind you and call 999. The Weeks of Action also help the fire service promote the message of stowing wheelie bins in a safe place after collection day to prevent them being targeted by arsonists. Stickers reminding residents to put their bins away in a safe place have been applied to bins left directly outside homes. When burning, wheelie bins produce vast quantities of thick black smoke and when stored under open windows the smoke easily enters rooms above. This has caused fatalities in other parts of the country and the sticker campaign’s a way to help prevent potential disasters occurring in our communities. If you want to talk to someone about the plan, call 01733 747474 and ask for the SaferPeterborough team or email saferpeterborough@peterborough.gov.uk Call 0800 328 9208 for free to get info about smoke alarms and advice on preventing fire. LOCALFOOD
SHALIMAR GARDENS IS GROWING! Just a few months after its opening Shalimar Gardens on New Road has seen a huge boost in business. Even better the diners are coming back, again and again. Since David Shaheen took over what was formerly Maharanis and his brother became the new chef the restaurant’s proving to be hot property! David’s been in the restaurant business for many years and his brother also has years of experience. David’s son also works at Shalimar Gardens so it’s a real family affair. “I’m really optimistic for the future,” David told ESP, “and I’m very proud of the fact that the Asian community is also supporting the restaurant well which is a real endorsement of the quality of our food here.” He’s certainly right there – Fosters, John Smiths, and Strong Bow are £1.95 and it’s just £2.50 for doubles and mixers while a bottle of house wine costs £6.95. The restaurant’s also open until midnight during the week and through until 4am Thursday, Friday and Saturday so it certainly looks like the restaurant will
become part of a night on the town. “We aim to create a real party atmosphere with no pressure to leave early and you won’t get stung on the drink prices either. “We offer English dishes as well as Indian, all made with fresh produce and the best ingredients. You’ll always get a great atmosphere in here and personal service because we’re passionate about the business.” Everyone’s looking to save cash and the lunchtime buffet at £4.95 sounds generous with an ‘eat as much as you can’ policy, but if you do want to push the boat out for a celebration you can even break open the Champers with Moet at £29.95 and Lanson at £24.95. With 120 seats and a light an airy building Shalimar Gardens looks ideal for parties and with Christmas on the way they’re already taking bookings. David tells us they can accommodate whatever you fancy from individual to buffet style or a deal including drinks. Sounds good to us so best not hang about! Call – 01733 346666.

If you like Italian food and in particular cannelloni, we can recommend Topo Gigio on Cowgate. Surprisingly this dish doesn’t actually appear on that many menus as a regular, more often it’s served as a special, but this gorgeous mix of minced beef and mozzarella in a pasta tube with a rich Neapolitan tomato sauce and parmesan is particularly tasty at Topo Gigio (price £8.50). These guys pride themselves on making fresh Italian dishes and altering their menu to your particular tastes, so if the delicious cannelloni’s anything to go by you should be able to enjoy whatever takes your fancy and just the way you like it!

For a time this landmark building opposite the railway station looked like it might be bulldozed, but canny developers have instead invested millions and restored its good looks. It’s now open for business and gearing up for the festive season with new party packages in the function room. The Carriages Restaurant looks beautiful and should become a new eating destination in the city. It’s bright and airy with a distinguished feel. The menu looks particularly good for fish lovers but had a delicious selection we’ll be keen to try. Of course the 36 rooms, all now with en suite have been tastefully refurbished and although the wedding suite and other premier rooms weren’t quite ready to view they sound impressive. It’s certainly great to see the Great Northern back on the city’s nightlife map. Tel: 01733 552595. www.thegreatnorthernhotel.co.uk

CELEBRATING THE GOOD TIMES WITH JLC JLC: What Wolfie? Oh how was he? He's a legend! For me it's all about the BDO, the PDC is when I was making the programme, I was going to have Phil Taylor teach me, but then his agent came back and said they wanted £25,000 so that was the end of that. SG: Apart from promoting the book, what are you up to next?
TV funny man Justin Lee Collins was at Waterstone’s recently signing copies of his autobiography Good Times. The ESP entertainment team took new Face of ESP, Tori Bradshaw, to meet him and after he hugged everyone in sight, serenaded Tori with a song and tried to convince us the reason he was wearing a Madonna tshirt was because she'd died that morning. Steve Gonzalez grabbed a quick chat… SG: Congratulations on the book, I got a copy of it on Sunday, sat down with a cup of tea and a Wispa Gold and couldn't put it down. I read it in one day even though Cannonball Run 2 was on the telly. I did stop though when Back to the Future came on. JLC: That's fair enough, it's a great film. SG: How did you find writing the book? JLC: Well I didn't actually write it myself, I mean it's my words, but my friend Boyd is a journalist and we've known each other for years so he did the actual writing. We had about 12 sessions together and I told him all the stories and then he wrote it up. SG: You might want to tell him that the name of the pub in Eastenders is 'The Queen Vic' not 'The Woolpack' when you see him, as that's in the book !

www.espmag.co.uk ( October )
JLC: Is it, is it really (laughs) oh that's funny. There's a bit in the book when I say I'm always getting names wrong so that kind of fits into it. SG: There's a couple of things that aren't in the book that I wanted to ask you about. Firstly, what was the first record you bought as a kid ? JLC: Shadduppa Yer Face by Joe Dolce. I met him a few years ago when I was doing a show about one hit wonders. I'd heard he could be quite prickly but I got around him because I knew the b-side and was able to sing it to him. SG: There's stuff in the book about the Bring Back... series of shows you did. Are there plans to do any more ? JLC: No sadly not, that's all ended. This is the first year in five that I haven't done one. I had a list of others I wanted to do, Cheers and Baywatch were on it and I really wanted to do one on The Goonies, but the boss at C4 wasn't a fan of the film so it never happened. I loved doing all the ones I did though. The only one I didn't really enjoy was Star Trek – that was a real ball-ache. SG: I also enjoyed the programme you did about learning to play darts. I interviewed Deeping darts player Martin Adams last month and he said he enjoyed meeting you.
JLC: I've just signed an exclusive two year deal with Five and I'm going to be doing a gameshow in November called Heads or Tails where someone can win a million pounds on the toss of a coin, a chat show and then some other documentary films – but the big thing I'm going to be doing is entering the Eurovision Song Contest! SG: Really? JLC: Absolutely, but here's the twist – I'm not going to be representing the UK because if I do I'll never win because nobody votes for us, so I'm going to enter as another country. We're in talks at the moment and it'll either be Romania, Latvia or Moldova. SG: And before that, is it true you're releasing an album? JLC: Yes it's called We Think Another Side. I've had some songs written for me and there's one called Margarita which is like a 70s Engelbert Humperdink style song. There's another called New York Nights which I won't sing to you because I get very emotional. SG: Well thanks very much Justin, and… JLC: Is that it? Oh ok. Come on then… let's have another hug.

EVERYBODY’S IN LOVE WITH JLS It’s fair to say there’s a ripple of excitement among the JLS boys as ESP grabs a quick word. When we speak to the lads they’re just back from LA having filmed their new video (with four lovely ladies as they’re keen to point out!) and are gearing up for their performance at the MOBO awards. “We’ve grown up as kids watching the show and now to perform on it, we’re fulfilling a dream,” says Marvin. “We’ve never been to anything on this scale it’s gonna be amazing.” JLS have quickly secured their place as the UK’s favourite boy band and as the rollercoaster speeds on with the release of their second single, closely followed by their debut album and a headline tour; it’s hard to believe that just a year ago they were starting out on their X Factor journey. Like us, the guys say they’re now glued to the series watching city girl Nicole Lawrence follow in Aston Merrygold’s footsteps on the show. “We’re big fans of the show,” says Oritsé “we used to watch it before we entered so of course we’re watching. We’re glued to the box and of course we’ll be voting!” “We know Nicole, we’ve met her before,” adds JB. “She’ll be thinking about how this can potentially change her life but she just needs to stay focussed on each stage as it comes.” The JLS boys have already been through so much the X Factor must seem like a lifetime ago. The follow-up to their No.1 smash hit, Beat Again, is called Everybody In Love and is released on
November 2. It’s an anthem for all the lovers out there, with a sound that combines old-school R&B with today’s hottest pop production – and it’s a song that shows the foursome’s fantastic vocals off perfectly. The boys jetted off to Los Angeles to film the video for the song – “LA was amazing but hard work, we were there five days and had just one day off!” It’s no surprise that the video’s already proving a winner on the music channels. Oritsé, JB, Marvin and Aston are the biggest pop success of the year and hysteria’s followed their every live and instore appearance to date, including of course Aston’s return to Peterborough at HMV. But Aston admits it’s getting harder to nip home to catch up with his family, or even to wade his way through the bags of fan mail arriving at his Mum’s house! “Oh yeah, I definitely miss home and it’s a lot harder to come back now. Just going for a drink at The Boathouse or somewhere just can’t happen these days, even nipping round to my grandparents means I get stopped for loads of photos. It does all seem strange but it’s a job now and you can’t lose focus.” JLS recently announced their first headline tour for February 2010. The tour sold out within 24 hours. And it would’ve been even quicker had it not been for the booking agents computers crashing due to the demand. It’s not just fans that have taken JLS to their hearts, the boys have been picking up famous fans along the way too, including Pet Shop Boys, Tinchy Stryder and Cheryl Cole.
JLS are currently working on their debut album which is due for release on November 9, the week after their next hit-inwaiting, Everybody In Love, hits the shelves.
firmly established in and around Spalding and Peterborough but have reached a national audience on the show – and gained the respect of top judge Jonathan Shalit who said on the show they were his winners. The three brothers from South Lincolnshire – Robert, Ian and David Wilson – perform their own original songs, alongside covers of the greats, such as Elvis, Buddy and The Stray Cats. Despite not making the final leg of the competition Robert told ESP they’re still chuffed with the level of exposure. “Over 1,000 bands entered so to get to the last 15 was an achievement in itself. Getting that far made us pretty happy as it was, it’s been great publicity and got us in front of the right people. “We have been slightly out of our comfort zone. I really missed my guitar and David’s missed his full drum kit because each round was acoustic. Anyone who’s seen us play locally will know that’s not really the full package! “We’ve had such fantastic support throughout this,” adds Robert. “So many people have messaged the GMTV website – they told us we caused a real buzz and there’s been a real stir about us which is just awesome and we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone for that. “It’s been hard work and long days but really good fun.”
HOUNDOGS ROCK GMTV’S ‘NO.1 FAMILY’ COMPETITION We’ve always known this area’s bursting with talent but recently we’ve just not been sure which channel to watch to keep track of our local heroes! The latest guys to put this patch on the map are one of our favourite bands – The Houndogs.

Now the guys plan to make the most of being on the show. They’ve already clinched some gigs in London and have big plans. “Up to now we’ve kind of been mainly a covers band, but now we really want to get our own music out there,” says Robert. “We want to be a modern Rockabilly band maybe like the Stray Cats and doing more of what they achieved a few years back. We’ll definitely be recording more tracks and an album of our own stuff.”
The guys made it through to the final 15 in GMTV’s No.1 Family band competition and although they didn’t make the finals they rocked the show!
If you want to sniff out The Houndogs and see their full act in all its glory up close, you can catch them at Charters on Saturday October 3 and at The Lime Tree in Walton on Friday October 30.
Arguably today’s top UK Rockabilly and Rock ‘n’ Roll band, The Houndogs are

ESP PUTS THE NEW EVORA TO THE TEST We have one word for this little beauty – stunning! This is the gorgeous new Lotus Evora and we’ve been lucky enough to try it out in a special driving day at the Cambridge Belfry. With class leading driving dynamics, fuel economy and emissions of just 205 g/km of CO2, the new Lotus Evora raises the bar for world class high performing sportscars. The first all-new Lotus since the iconic Elise roadster made its debut in 1995, the Evora enters the sports car market as the world’s only production midengined 2+2. It’s certainly a thrilling drive – the mid-engined layout gives incredible agility and the Lotus engineered suspension ensures an amazing ride and handling. Powered by a Lotus-tuned 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 280 PS, and weighing just 1350 kg (prototype specification)*, the Evora delivers an exhilarating experience. The idea behind the Evora is to attract a new style of customer so it’s a little more refined and the cabin is beautifully trimmed while its equipment list includes gadgets like an advanced touchscreen multi-media system and electric powerfold door mirrors. You can also expect wider, taller doors, narrower sills and higher seating position making getting in and out of the cabin a less athletic undertaking than it is in Lotus’ smaller sports cars! DARREN GETS PEP’S BIKE BUG It seems where our Pep leads, others (including former England cricketers!) follow. ESP readers will know Pep’s been converted from moped mad to motor-biker. Now Darren Gough has followed in his footsteps – as the latest celeb to be gripped by the biking bug. Goughie – who showed he’s not too shabby on his feet in Strictly Come Dancing – has swapped his cricket whites for his leathers to support Get On, a nationwide campaign to promote motorcycling and scootering. He took his CBT (Compulsory Basic Training to be able to ride a 125cc bike) as part of the campaign, which is making biking and scootering open to the public by offering free one hour riding taster sessions throughout the country. The cricket legend celebrated his 39th birthday in style by taking delivery of a brand new Hyosung GV125c Cruiser as he continues on his route towards fulfilling his life-long ambition of learning to ride a motorbike. Now a presenter on talkSPORT Radio, Gough said – “I can’t believe I’ve got my own bike, it’s the best birthday present I could’ve asked for. I’ve always been interested in bikes and set my heart on learning to ride a few years ago when I was on tour in India with the England cricket team. “I guess I’m like a lot of people in that I’ve been interested in motorbikes for a long time but never really been sure how to go about getting into riding. I heard about Get On which makes everything simple for you. “Anyone over the age of 16 can get a free taster session of riding a bike or scooter by simply going to www.geton.co.uk and then, if like me you love it, the site tells you everything you need to know about how to take your test, what training you need and what bikes and equipment will suit you.”

PERFECT TEN
Louis Smith OLYMPIC GYMNAST
He might be number ten in the last of our Perfect Ten Success Stories features but Louis Smith is still aiming to be number one in the World Championships. As Peterborough’s Olympic medalwinning gymnast prepares for his next big showdown this month, he still has a gold at the 2012 Olympics in his sights. 58
www.espmag.co.uk ( October )
… SUCCESS STORIES We’ve been celebrating local talent as part of ESP’s tenth anniversary year and Louis has been a contender from the start. He’s had a whirlwind year since he won the bronze at Beijing in the men’s pommel horse, becoming the first Briton to win a medal at the individual gymnastics at the Olympics since 1908. “A lot’s gone on since then – I’ve met the Queen, presented at the MOBO awards, been on TV shows like Ready, Steady, Cook and A Question of Sport – it’s all been fantastic. I’m still going into schools and I’m an ambassador for EDF Energy. It’s been great fun.” Louis assures us it’s not all gone to his head though – “I’ve calmed down a lot and take a lot more in my stride. Before I really wanted to be famous and loved the attention but now, I still like that, but very much like my own home time too, so I’m much quieter.” He’s now moved into his own apartment and says he’s become a lot more responsible but there was a time when if he hadn’t had the direction his sport has given him, life might have been very different. “I was a bit of a crazy cat,” he says with a glint in his eye. “I liked to push boundaries and be a bit mischievous. Now I have to watch where I tread. I’m a role model at the end of the day and have responsibilities. “I’ve been kept on the straight and narrow all my life with a strict coach, my mother’s brought me up well, I’ve got an older brother who keeps me in check. We didn’t have a lot growing up so I’ve learned to appreciate things more. “I wasn’t the best in school, my concentration wasn’t always good I was looking out the window. I made the decision in school I was really going to go for gymnastics. For a lot of my teachers that was hard to understand. I don’t think they knew how much I believed in my ability.” When he was a kid, Louis originally followed his older brother Leon to the gym but it became a passion for him and he soon began to excel on the pommel horse, which has become his most successful event. Since then he’s broken records and taken title after title but of course an Olympic gold is the next major goal. Louis is training hard but knows he can’t lose focus – “I’m at the top now so everyone’s gunning for me – I’ve painted a target on my head! Statistically speaking the easy part is getting to the top and the hard part is staying there.” Despite his more homely side, Louis still has the desire to perform and hopes to make the most of his career. “The idea of a 9 to 5 office job doesn’t excite me,” says Louis. “I love the idea of entertaining and doing my gym and sports. I definitely want to stay in the mainstream, in media promoting the sport, being an ambassador a bit like Kelly Holmes.
Opening Hours Lunchtime Tuesday – Saturday 12pm – 2pm Evening Tuesday – Saturday 5.30pm ‘til late Please book to avoid disappointment Christmas Party bookings now being taken, limited space available
“I don’t take a lot for granted. I know that at any moment it could all be taken away with one injury, one slip, so I’m enjoying life.” The winged tattoo on his back (“really painful” to have done, he tells us) reads – ‘What I deserve I earn’. That and his admiration for the likes of boxer Muhammed Ali seems to indicate what today’s Louis Smith is all about. “He knew what he wanted to be, lots of people doubted him but he pushed on and got through and was an amazing sportsman.”

UP Released: October 9 Voice Cast: Ed Asner, Jordan Nagai, John Ratzenberger Director: Pete Docter
Just when you thought the animation giant that is Disney/Pixar couldn’t take the genre any further, it takes it into orbit… literally. After waiting months for the UK release, the film has already notched more than $300m to become the biggest animation of the summer Stateside. Now Up finally has lift-off this side of the pond. Some critics are heralding the movie as Pixar’s best yet, as 78 year-old Carl Fredricksen (voiced by American Emmy-award winning TV stalwart Ed Asner) takes to the skies – inadvertently with eight year-old stowaway Russell – after attaching thousands of balloons to his house.
This well-crafted Disney/Pixar collaboration will undoubtedly take a chunk out of the half-term break (in both 2D and 3D formats), as they aim to dominate the holiday with the limited release of its first computer-generated animation Toy Story (released on October 2) in a special Disney Digital 3D presentation as a prelude to next year’s Toy Story 3. Check www.espmag.co.uk/reviews for the full lowdown on Up once it’s released.

Released: October 23
After box office damp squib Ghost Town, British comedy genius Ricky Gervais has his second major stab as a Hollywood lead, with Jonah Hill and Jennifer Garner also on the card, in another comedy romance that again, is getting decent early reviews.
Woody Harrelson continues his steady return into the limelight starring alongside fledgling stars Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland) and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine) in this supposedly witty comedyhorror that matches giggles with gore.
He’s dead, but still up to his old tricks, as Jigsaw begrudgingly gets a mention with Halloween and a sixth Saw movie approaching. Reportedly his grand scheme is finally understood before being padded into the inevitable seventh movie and another new poster.
All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

Despite a hit-and-miss affair that’s more The Last Stand than X2 – there’s still enjoyment to be had with this first X-Men spin-off. Unfortunately it’s cameos from Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Taylor Kitsch’s Gambit that steals the limelight from Hugh Jackman’s usual movie-stealing Wolverine – as he gets the prequel treatment. After the death of his girlfriend at the hands of his psychotic mutant brother Victor Creed/Sabertooth (Liev Schreiber), Logan/Wolverine goes through William Stryker’s controversial Weapon X programme to enhance his abilities to legendary adamantium status. With loads of mutant superheroes thrown in, there’s enough here to get your claws into to keep both fanboys and casual viewers entertained. #####
Game On BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM
IL-2 STURMOVIK: BIRDS OF PREY
This does for superhero games what The Dark Knight did for superhero movies. With jaw-dropping graphics, exceptional voice-over work and spot-on gaming mechanics – headlined by silent stealth takedowns and ‘detective mode’ – life is breathed into the Caped Crusader.

HALO 3: ODST
SECTION 8
After a couple of years battling it out on Xbox Live, the Halo 3 first-person shooter universe has been impressively expanded.
If a game was going to win awards for showing heart and persistence then this FPS would rake them in.
(X360) Out Now
The single-player campaign – even though it stills clocks in a little short – is a refreshingly more ‘human’ experience as your Orbital Drop Shock Trooper ‘rookie’ does battle, and despite being a tad samey is still well worth a purchase in its own right. But again it’s the multiplayer modes, complete with standout co-operative campaign mode Firefight that’ll induce hours of sleep depravation, in a good way.
(X360/PC) Out Now
As it stands, this Halo wannabe has a handful of neat ideas – great use of the jet pack via orbital burn-in, impressive dash mode and decent multiplayer – but the gaming mechanics and rough graphics gives it a look a couple of years out of date. It’s still well worth being ‘sectioned’ to your console for a playthrough – but inevitably joins that middling band of shooters that’s for hardcore genre fans only. #####

If you’re a true car enthusiast then this comeback story will restore your faith.
You’ll almost feel mud flying out of the screen as sensational graphics, control physics, real damage, tasty car extras and a lag-free online mode takes this impressive race package to the next level – both on and off-road.
This series has been revitalised with nearly 70 licensed cars and breathtaking customisation tools, all bedded into a beautifully presented game.

(X360/PS3/PSP/PC) Out Now
Shift is hampered by its arcade or simulation game? middle ground, and inevitable comparisons with other games in the genre, but a top in-game speed to make you drool coupled with great online play makes it one of the best of its ilk this year. #####
WSC: REAL 09 (WII/X360/PS3/PC) Out Now
For enthusiasts, this Wii snooker experience is just about as good as it gets. With or without a cue attachment, the Wii remote – after getting used to the sensitivity – adds an extra dimension, with pool also covered in the package. It boasts your favourite players such as Ronnie Sullivan and Steve Davis, but only minor improvements on last year’s version, while noticeable, don’t take it up a rung on the sporting game ladder.

The page that wants to know why the only part of Peterborough city centre that hasn't been dug up over the past few months is the bit outside the town hall.
BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE FACE OF ESP
d
Every year about a week before the Face of ESP finals night, event manager and compere Ian Gray gathers everyone together and assigns us tasks. Last year alongside Andy Slater I was given what Ian's powerpoint presentation described as 'STOOLS'. Our 'specific' job was to make sure there were 6 bar stools on the stage for the final 6 ladies, although why Ian couldn't have written 'bar stools' instead of just 'stools' is beyond me. It certainly would’ve stopped Andy from blurting out... "There's no way you're getting me anywhere near your stools Ian. I'm not Gillian McKeith!" Anyway this year, I was taken off 'stool' duty and had several vital roles to perform. I may be ESP's 3rd best columnist but that reputation counts for Me with Louis Smith nothing when you're running around the hotel with Sadie De Roux (daughter of 80s boxing legend Gary De Roux) trying to find Matt Zilch who was meant to be on stage with his band. As Sadie was in charge of backstage operations, I suggested that if we couldn't find Matt we could put the ESP dancers on, play the Benny Hill theme tune and get Pep to chase after them. Sadie then looked at me like I'd gone mad and asked me a question I never EVER thought I'd live to hear..."Who's Benny Hill?" Unfortunately there wasn't time for me to explain properly so I just said – "He's a bit like Harry Hill only deader." Another high point of the evening was introducing our 2008 winner, Claire Elizabeth Smith, to some of the nervous contestants. Claire's been a fantastic ambassador for the magazine over the past 12 months and has without a doubt been my favourite Face of ESP since… Kerry Bates. Meanwhile during the initial judging stages I worked a neat doublejudging act with Louis Smith. After seeing Louis turn up in a retro 1970s style suit I renamed him 'Disco Lou' (that's a Simpsons joke if you're reading Sadie) and Louis dubbed me 'not as funny in real life as you are in the magazine'. Sorry Louis, but I am a ficticious character – a bit like Morten Harket in A-Ha's Take On Me video I jump in and out of the pages of a magazine (Sadie, please tell me you've heard of A-Ha).
THE RETURN OF WISPA GOLD Last month, thanks to a massive campaign on Facebook, Wispa Gold returned to the shops. At the press launch at Selfridges, Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley was involved, although sadly didn't sing Gold. Well I say enough's enough, and if Cadbury's won't rewrite the lyrics then it looks like it's down to me... Take it away Tone... Thank you for coming home I'm sorry it's taken Cadbury's so long I left my name on the Facebook campaign....
Me with Claire, The Face of ESP’08
After the judging I was then entrusted with arguably the most important job of the night, one which was fundamental to the evening’s success. I had to make sure there was a steady supply of Boddingtons backstage for Ian to drink in-between hosting the event. "I need to keep my throat well lubricated otherwise I won't be able to talk", he explained to me. Now, there are some people who might say that Ian Gray losing his voice would've improved the evening, but not me. Besides, this year Ian's throat was drier than usual. This was nothing to do with him talking more onstage, but due to all the smoke he inhaled when he accidentally burnt down his garden shed over the summer.

"Is it me or are train companies running out of excuses for delays? I was on a train going to Peterborough and it stopped before it got there and the announcer said – "We apologise for the delay outside Peterborough, this has been caused by a delay" – Hugh Dennis "I went on a girls' night out. The invite said 'Dress to kill' so I went as Rose West " – Zoe Lyons "A lot of people say comedians are egocentric... but that's enough about them." – Phil Nichol

DARA O'BRAINBOX Many of you will recognise comedian Dara O'Briain as the witty Irish host of BBC2's Mock The week, but did any of you know he had a degree in mathematical physics? No? Well consider yourselves FACT UP people because last month he was the special guest of honour at Cambridge University during their Physics at Work week where he no doubt entertained students with a few equations…
STANDOUTSTANDUP The sublimely brilliant Stewart Lee is bringing his latest stand up show: If You Prefer A Milder Comedian Please Ask For One, to The Key Theatre. The last time he played Peterborough (also at The Key) was in 2001 so if you don't see him this time you'll probably have to wait until 2017 before they get around to booking him again. Anyway here’s the blurb from his flyer that tells you more... Stew says – “In this show, an account of something that happened to me in a coffee shop will be used as a convenient framing device for disparate material possibly concerning English Heritage, Top Gear, The Olympics, emigration, prawns, Bella Pasta, The National Trust, farmers, DH Lawrence, piglets, cathedrals, bees, Iggy Pop, cider adverts, riots etc etc.” Tickets are £15 for the show on Friday November 27. Box office: 01733 207239. The Cresset’s regular Comedy Club makes a welcome return on Friday October 16. David Ward hosts the show, with performances from Ellis James and Andy White. To see some great comedy talent live and unleashed, drop in at 7.30pm in order to get a drink, something to eat and a seat. The show begins at 8.15pm and tickets cost £9.50 in advance on 01733 265705 or £12 on the door. The new season of Stamford Comedy club starts again on Friday October 16 and is always worth a look. This one includes Isy Suttie with a brilliant blend of stand-up, songs and characters from Peep Show’s (C4) Dobby. Andi Osho Winner of the Nivea Funny Women Award in 2007, Star of The Andi O Show (E4), Tonightly (C4) and more. Plus Julian Deane voted Best New Act 2008 by the Comedy Café. Over in Spalding, Jongleurs on the Road returns to the South Holland Centre on Thursday October 15 at 8pm. This is always a popular night with two hours of laughs from the brightest talent on the Jongleurs comedy circuit. Tickets are £10. Box office 01775 764777.

FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND Launching their Best Of album and giving fans the chance to reminisce over seven years worth of great music, Welsh rockers, Funeral For A Friend will be at The Cresset in Bretton, Peterborough on Monday October 12. The album, Your History Is Mine: 2002-2009 also contains an EP’s worth of brand new material and should be out now. Drummer and vocalist Ryan Richards said, “playing brand new stuff for the first time to a live audience is really exciting, but it’ll be a nice change to go on tour and be able to represent all our best material instead of having to concentrate on new stuff.” Tickets for the gig are on sale now from The Cresset on 01733 265705 or from The Met Lounge on 01733 566100. Alternatively, book online. Tickets are just £15 and available to all ages – although under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. www.cresset.co.uk

Sixteen bands will be battling it out over four nights, with the four highest scoring bands going through to the final in December. On Friday October 2 the first four bands will be The Ruined,

Samurai Lawn Party, Three Chord Strung and Last Protocol, all bringing some decent metal to the venue. The second round will be on Saturday October 17 with Vendetta, Stringfinger, Know No Bounds and Burn City Burn. The third round will take place on Saturday November 6 with Don’t Look Down, Radicus, Kamikaze Hotshot and A Story to Tell. The final round will be on Friday November 13 with Death Valley Piledriver, Komatyzed, Autumn Ablaze and Broken Mentality. The nights will be judged by sponsors Mike Houlihan from Mama Liz’s and Hamdy Taha from Metal on Rock Productions, as well as ESP’s own Andy Slater and Nick Noodles from Voodoo Lounge. Tickets for each night are just £3 on the door and we’ll bring you more news of the final when it happens in December. www.mamaliz.co.uk
JAMMING THE JAM It’s fair to say that only a couple of years ago, we were spoilt in Peterborough for Jam tribute bands, with several tribute bands coming to the city along with our very own Setting Sons, who are sadly no more. But we can now get back to the halcyon days of Weller et al with The Jam DRC when they make their first ever visit to Peterborough on Saturday October 10 at The Fletton Ex-Serviceman’s Club, High Street, Fletton. The ‘drc’ bit comes from the 5CD box set of the same name, which gathers together pretty much everything the Brit-mod band ever recorded. In short, The Jam DRC are Jam fans playing Jam songs – from hits such as A Town Called Malice and Going Underground to Thick As Thieves and English Rose. Tickets are £1 for members and £5 on the door for non-members. www.thejamdrc.com
STEVE’S A BRIT WINNER Holbeach-based musician and amateur songwriter, Steve Vandes, is celebrating success in the 2009 UK Songwriting Contest, organised by the BRIT Trust (of BRIT Award fame) after having two of the six songs he entered make it to the semi-final stages of the contest, beating off over 6000 entries – many of them from professional song-writers. “As an amateur songwriter I wasn’t expecting to do this well,” Steve told ESP, “and wouldn’t it be amazing if a big star took an interest in one of my songs?”

LIVEMUSIC Former drummer with Bourne-based band, White Spirit, Steve is now rehearsing with a new band based in Grantham and working hard on his song-writing skills. You can hear some of Steve’s songs, including the competition entries, through his MySpace page. www.myspace.com/stevevandes
NEW LINE-UP FOR WHITE SPIRIT Expect to see a new line-up when you catch the next White Spirit gig as their singer Nick has decided to retire from the band and as you may have read above, Steve Vandes the drummer has also moved on. After a cracking headline gig at the Bourne Festival in the summer the band have been rebuilding and tell us Tim Cook, who’s from the Cambridge area, will take over behind the mic and is doing them proud so far, plus they tell us he’s easy on the eye for ladies! Their new drummer is Chris Churchman from Market Deeping who’s fitted in a treat. You can make your own mind up at their first formal gig with the new guys on Saturday October 3 at the Coach House in Market Deeping and then at The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road on October 23. www.whitespiritrock.com
THINK FLOYD Following a hugely successful tour of Scotland during September, local Pink Floyd tribute band Think Floyd return to their local stomping ground on Saturday October 31 when performing at The Bourne Corn Exchange. If you’re a Pink Floyd fan and haven’t seen this tribute band, then quite simply, it’s time you did. Playing hits and album tracks from the early Pink Floyd catalogue, as well the more famous Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Division Bell, the performance also celebrates the 30th Anniversary of The Wall with a light and sound show faithfully recreating the live performances of Pink Floyd themselves. Tickets are just £13 and available from the band website or from the Bourne Corn Exchange. www.thinkfloyd.net www.bournecornexchange.co.uk
ROBBIE WILLIAMS BANNED Robbie’s back in the charts and there’s a new tribute act doing the rounds here. Robbie Williams Banned, features Greg and Steve and one of the vocalists from the Motown Souled Out who recently appeared at the Face of ESP Finals Night. They’ll be unleashed on the Boro with a gig at Radius on Wednesday October 28, tickets are just £6. For more info call Greg on 07932 692368 or Steve 07869 293921.
POWERSURGE GOT TALENT Here are our latest local music stars... and they’re considerably younger than most on the circuit! In fact they’re at Robert Manning and Bourne Grammar school. Powersurge are this year’s winners of Peterborough’s Got Talent, a competition organised by Peterborough City Council to raise cash for charity. The band fought off stiff competition in the 14 and under show, where they competed for the winning title with dance acts, singers and other musicians playing to over 200 people. Powersurge are Will on drums, AJ on bass and guitar, James on guitar, Josh on Keyboard and Brooke and Ben on vocals. Despite their age the band have already played many gigs and have been asked to play a regular monthly slot at the Spinning Wheel in Baston and hope to record a CD. Brooke told ESP – “I was pleased that all our hard work had paid off and that people enjoy listening to us. Winning the competition has given us the motivation to work harder and improve. I am looking forward to learning new songs and hopefully starting to write our own material.” Powersurge are hoping to play at lots more events once their name gets around so if you fancy supporting some (very) young talent call Rebecca Beavis – 07891 114902.

LOCALSPORT LAST CHANCE TO WATCH PANTHERS Peterborough’s bid to reach this year’s play off’s failed recently in Manchester, The Panthers needed to collect six points from their last two away matches but unfortunately it wasn’t to be as the Panthers went down by 2 points (45-43) to the Belle Vue Aces. Now they’re turning their attentions to the Midland Championship to end the season with home and away matches against Coventry and
Wolverhampton. After winning against Coventry back in September, Coventry visit the Showground for the return leg on Thursday October 1. Peterborough will host their leg against Wolverhampton on Thursday October 8 (Panthers’ final home fixture of the season) with the return taking place at Monmore Green on Monday October 26. Panthers Owner Rick Frost admits a lack of consistency cost the club this year and points to a poor away record as the main reason why Panthers haven’t lived up to their pre-season ambitions. Peterborough hosted an early round of the Speedway World Cup this year and the round was
one of the best, if not the best match seen on Sky this year. It’s hoped that more big meetings will be staged at the Showground in future years now that the track has official FIM status for the next three years at least. The date for the Peterborough Speedway end of season dinner dance has been confirmed for Saturday October 31 at the Marriott Hotel, Orton Northgate, Peterborough from 7pm ‘til late. Tickets priced at £32 can be bought from Peterborough Speedway on the remaining match days and details can also be found on the club’s website at www.peterboroughspeedway.net

FAREWELL TO PHANTOMS’ STAR LEWIS Peterborough Phantoms will hope the only way is up after a tough start to the new season. The Phantoms suffered back to back defeats on the opening weekend of their English Premier League campaign, going down to the Sheffield Scimitars and Slough Jets. The losses came just days after the Phantoms beat Milton Keynes in the Ashes challenge, a success only marred by the announcement of captain Lewis Buckman’s retirement. The victory in the Ashes Challenge saw Lewis lift his sixth trophy in just eighteen months, making him easily the most successful captain in the history of Peterborough ice hockey.
"This has been the hardest decision that I’ve ever had to make and it is one that I have not taken lightly," he revealed. “I’ve been thinking about retirement from hockey for some time and the decision has been made purely due to the amount of time that hockey is now taking up. "I’ve had nine and a bit great years playing for first the Pirates and then the Phantoms. I may not have had the best hands in the world or been the fastest skater but I would like to think that I have always given the team everything that I had to give.
Lewis added – “I’ve made a lot of great friends and had the honour to play with some great players. The hardest thing for me will be to leave behind such a great dressing room which is full of great people." Lewis was a product of the Peterborough junior development section where he was a stand-out player at all levels. He made his senior debut for the Pirates as a sixteen year-old in 1999 and rapidly established himself as an outstanding player. His ten seasons in Peterborough hockey have seen him dominate the club's record books having played more
games than any other player, scored more goals than any other player and laid on more assists for his colleagues than any other British player. Club director Jon Kynaston added – "To lose a player of Lewis' ability and stature is a huge loss at any time. His commitment and work ethic is unquestioned whenever he pulls on a Peterborough jersey. He will retire forever a Peterborough hockey legend.” www.peterboroughphantoms.com

Posh will be looking to kick start their Championship campaign this month after finally securing their first league win of the season.

Darren Ferguson’s side picked up their first three points with a 3-2 win over Reading after seven matches without a victory. A late winner from George Boyd capped a fine second half comeback after Posh went into the break 2-0 down. Craig MackailSmith and Aaron Mclean were the other scorers at London Road.
The first win had followed decent draws at Leicester and QPR – with a late winner at Loftus Road disallowed for offside. But Posh still face plenty of tough games over the next few weeks as they hope to move up the table and away from the relegation zone, with trips to Blackpool, Bristol City and Doncaster Rovers as well as home games against Plymouth, Nottingham Forest, Scunthorpe and Barnsley. www.theposh.net

Kerry Bates our former Face of ESP, and other half of one Chris Whelpdale, takes a bird’s eye view of footy life and the fortunes of The Posh… The nights are longer and the days are definitely getting colder. This can only mean summer is well and truly over. It also means both Chris and I have had time to recover from our injuries and now, finally things are back to normal. This time last month I was back in hospital for a second time after the delights of having my appendix removed... fortunately the stay was brief and after one more week at home, it was back to the day job. Work – something I thought I missed whilst lying in the hospital bed but now I’m back I’m not so sure I did! Chris is also back to ‘work’ but somehow I think he actually was missing it one heck of a lot while he was off! As much as it pains me to say, I think it is nice to be back in a routine as before my life would be based around sitting, waiting and simply watching some horrendous TV programmes to fill my day! Chris was desperate to get back to playing football again and couldn’t wait to play in his first ever Championship game. That day came when Peterborough travelled to London to play Queens Park Rangers. I went down to watch him play and conveniently saw my brother at the same time. My brother, who I like to call ‘Bug’ lives a street behind the QPR stadium so after some lunch, we went along with a few of his friends to cheer Chris on. Funnily enough, I was really excited to watch Chris play. I’m not a footbally girl but I must admit that I am starting to understand the sport more these days. It had been over four months since I’d last seen him play so I was three quarters excited and one quarter nervous for him! It’s really weird because you naturally want your other half to do really well in everything they do, so watching Chris play in a league he’s never played in before I found myself feeling nervous as I really didn’t know what to expect from him. I was so pleased though as he played brilliantly (even if I am slightly biased) and got the crowd excited about his return to the squad. A couple of games on and Chris needed five stitches in his head from a header that went a little wrong (he says it was from a head collision but in truth it’s actually from when he said my bum DID look big in that dress!) and we’re back in full swing of a new football season…

PETERBOROUGH’S GOT TALENT After the success of Aston and JLS last year, Peterborough once again has some homegrown talent to get behind and cheer on all the way in the shape of soul sing er Nicole Lawrence.

The 2009 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials took place recently at (funnily enough) Burghley Hou se in Stamford and this year attracted lots of celebrities, inclu ding Matt Baker from BBC’s Countryfile, Zara Phillips (who was competing) Chris Biggins and Katie Price with her latest on-o ff boyfriend Alex Reid. Sir Ranulph Fiennes was also there on the Friday in his capacity as Land Rover ambassador. Won der what he made of Jordan attending the event? One sigh t of her in her jodhpurs and tiny t-shirt and he probably grabbed his crampons (so to speak) thinking he’d spotted a couple of mountains he hadn’t conquered yet!

I’ve introduced Nicole on stag e loads of times at events around Peterborough and trust me when I say that this girl is a real diva (in the sense of having a huge voice and larg er than life personality rather than the “make sure the Andrex in my bathroom is the same shade as my knickers and whilst you ’re at it, check that the hole in my donuts is exa ctly 2 centimetres in diameter” type of diva) who really knows how to work a crowd. And she’s a really nice girl to boot. I agree with Simon that she’s picked up a few ‘nightclub singer’ bad habits (not like Vic Reeves though!) but if she can iron those out at bootcamp, she’s going to do us proud. But did you know this isn’t Nicole’s first venture into the world of reality TV? Oh no! About five years ago, she was in a pro gramme called ‘The Fit Farm’ on Channel 4: a kind of Big Brother type show for people with wei ght issues, but with colonic irrigation and tree hugging thrown in. In typical Nicole fashion, she threw herself into it wholeheartedly and emb raced the challenges and alternative treatments, one of which being (sorry Nicole!) when the inmates were asked to drink their own urine as some kind of detoxifying ritual (de toxifying? If I drank mine, I’m sure it would be abo ut 70% proof!) for good health. Can’t wait for that footage to come out when she makes it big – come on Nicole!
