Join Forest for Peterborough as it plants its 100,000th tree in the city! The environmental charity PECT launched Forest for Peterborough in 2010, with the aim of planting over 180,000 trees in and around the city and surrounding countryside by 2030 – one tree for every person living in the city. This month the project is reaching a massive milestone. Its 100,000th tree will be planted within the city’s Central Park on Saturday October 7. Local residents, volunteers and groups are being encouraged to come together to celebrate this milestone at the familyfriendly event. The event will run from

Another new fashion retailer is opening soon at Springfields Outlet Centre in Spalding. The new Betty Barclay unit at 4,000 sqft will be their largest outlet store in the UK. This follows the successful launch of sports and fashion retailer, Raging Bull, the sports

fashion brand led by former England rugby star Phil Vickery, which opened in the summer. They join Next Outlet, Fat Face, Ernest Jones the Outlet Collection and Starbucks, who have all opened new stores at Springfields recently and Italian coffee specialists, Caffé Nero, will also be opening soon.

HELP NEEDED TO COMPLETE YMCA GYM Thanks to volunteers from local businesses, YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough’s plans for an outdoor bootcamp space at the charity’s Peterborough Gym are starting to take shape. However more help is needed to complete this exciting project. They operate a Community Gym in The Cresset at the Bretton Centre and currently offer a free seven-day trial to prospective new members. With over 1000 existing members, the gym already provides an opportunity for local residents to improve their physical and mental wellbeing through gym and class-based activities. The expansion plans will see an adjoining unused outdoor area incorporated into the gym to provide a new space for users. Any companies, groups or individuals who might be able to lend a hand or make a donation should get in touch on 01733 373189.

ROTARY SWIM Werrington Rotary Club is again holding their annual charity swim at Jack Hunt Pool on Sunday October 29. Entry’s free and every participant will receive a commemorative medal and photograph. Each team is asked to raise funds, half for their own good causes and half for Rotary Charities. Werrington Rotary is donating money to local charities. School PTA’s, sports clubs, charities and help groups and can all benefit. SANTAS GET READY TO STROLL

If you’re looking for a festive fitness fix, you can now sign up to the city's Santa Stroll. The stroll will start from Serpentine Green Shopping Centre at 10am on Sunday December 17. You’ll be given a Santa suit including a beard and belt and can either walk, jog or run a 5km (3 mile) course. Councillor Steve Allen, cabinet advisor to the Leader, said: “The Santa Stroll is set to be a fantastic event and we hope that lots of residents get involved in the fun while supporting some local good causes.” Entry forms are available from Serpentine Green Shopping Centre and the Visitor Information Centre in the city centre. Entry for adults is £15, youths (9 to 14 years) £10, juniors (5 to 8 years) £7, families (2 adults and 2 children) £40. £1 from each runner will be pledged to raise funds for the Mayor’s charities.

AWARD-WINNING SAXOPHONIST PLAYS IN CITY The City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra feature award-winning British saxophonist Gillian Blair at the Queen Katherine Academy Hall (formerly The Voyager) on Sunday October 15, 3pm 5pm. She will play Alexander Glazounov’s deeply lyrical saxophone concerto. The concert starts with Humperdink’s Overture to Hansel and Gretel and concludes with Czech composer Dvorak’s brilliant New World Symphony. STAR PARTY @ SACREWELL On Saturday October 7 Peterborough Astronomical Society hold their biannual Star Party at Sacrewell. There’ll be telescopes to try to spot some stars and planets (weather permitting) along with informative displays.

HALF TERM FUN @ FERRY MEADOWS This month there’s plenty going on at Ferry Meadows in the half term to keep the young ones out of mischief! The half term trail is on from Saturday 21 to Sunday October 29. Grab a trail sheet from the Visitor Centre and then hunt for clues as you make your way around Ferry Meadows, then just claim your prize at the visitor centre when you're finished. On Tuesday October 24 take a look at the Falconry talk and display which brings the ancient art of Falconry to the modern age with a display that you’ll definitely be thrilled by. If your children are Bear Grylls wannabes they can have a go at some campfire cooking for kids. They’ll be shown how to use basic bush craft techniques to light a fire without using matches and then have a go at cooking and eating some simple campfire recipes. GEMZ DIAMONDZ CHARITY DANCEATHON RAISES CASH We have to say a huge congratulations to Gemz Diamondz dance group who successfully completed a 5 hour danceathon and raised a whopping £890 for the British Red Cross. The event saw young dancers from the group aged from 4-16 years-old continuously strut their stuff at the William de Yaxley Hall on International Dance Day. East Anglian Air Ambulance and ESP are glowing all out this October – join the party! Over 1,500 people will take on a nighttime, neon 5km run at the East of England Showground on Saturday October 21 and we challenge you to raise at least £50 for East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA)! EAAA are a charity offering a helicopter emergency medical service in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Since 2000 the crews have attended more than 22,000 missions in East Anglia and rely on donations to keep saving lives in the region. In 2017 the crews have attended an average of more than eight missions every day, and each mission costs the Charity an average of £3,500. Leanne Tyers, EAAA Fundraising Officer for the Peterborough area, said: “Our motto is ‘together we save lives’ and every penny raised at Glow in the Park will go directly towards saving lives in the area. Everyone taking part and fundraising should be proud of whatever they raise and know that when they see our helicopter flying over or landing at

Peterborough City Hospital that they helped us to reach, treat and transport that patient in need of our lifesaving service and we are so grateful.” Whether it’s your first 5K or you’re a seasoned runner, you can still get sponsored and help to keep the two EAAA helicopters in the air. Autumn Food and Country Fair The great family event that marks the fact that autumn has truly arrived is back at the East of England Arena this month. Ghost Stories

Numerous stories can be found regarding spooky goings on in Peterborough and beyond. It’s no surprise when you think about our great city’s history. Peterborough began as a Saxon settlement around 655. It has seen many lives lost in that time and it would seem that many of those spirits refuse to leave.

ou may have heard that Peterborough Museum is haunted by the ghost of Thomas Hunter, a World War One soldier who died from battle wounds whilst being treated in the building when it was a hospital back in 1916. Sightings of Hunter began almost instantly. The nurse who’d been treating him was the first to see his spirit lurking in the halls and there have been many reports since by both staff and visitors. Next time you’re passing Peterborough Cathedral during the evening, look out for candlelight coming from inside one of the windows. There have also been numerous reports of this coming from the upper floors of the west front of the cathedral. It’s said to

be the light of a spectral stone mason who is believed to have been working on building the cathedral during the night, when his candle went out causing him to fall from the scaffolding to his death. Who hasn’t considered spending the night at a haunted hotel? The Bell Inn is a 17th century coaching house located on Peterborough’s Great North Road and it’s said to be one of the most haunted hotels in Peterborough. Unexplained activity includes kitchen equipment being moved or even disappearing completely only to turn up a few days later in unusual places. Guests have reported hearing the sound of jangling keys when nobody is in sight and guests have also reported waking to see a dark figure at the foot of the bed. These are just a few of the many stories I’ve heard whilst participating in numerous Ghost Walks. The guides often have a way of painting a real picture as they’re telling their stories, literally sending shivers down my spine. The suspense is multiplied whilst doing one of the walks around Halloween. I highly recommend you give one of the many Halloween Ghost Walks a go. Spooky Tours at Burghley House take

Spalding Pumpkin Festival October 13

Peterborough Zombie Walk This popular walk sees hundreds of locals going all out with their Zombie costumes before walking the streets of Peterborough. It’s quite the sight! In previous years, we have seen punk rocker, policeman and bride zombies. Who knows what this year will bring. The walk kicks off from Charters bar at 4pm and participants are encouraged to take part on behalf of a local charity.

This year's free event will take place on Friday October 13 from 11am - 8pm in Spalding Town Centre. There’ll be various market stalls and entertainment throughout the day, from street entertainment to cooking demonstrations, face painting, and arts and crafts activities with Creation Station and Transported Arts. In the evening activities include a fancy dress competition, live entertainment, the Pumpkin Parade at 6.30pm and grand finale firework display at 7.30pm.

Burghley Halloween Trail October 14 – October 29 For a less scary Halloween treat, once again the popular Burghley Pumpkin Trail is back for 2017 offering a whole feast of pumpkin fun for families. Tread through the crispy autumn leaves and find the hidden pumpkins to receive a treat. Children will be encouraged to come in fancy dress – and those that do can claim a free biscuit from the Garden Café while seasonal treats will also be in store in the Orangery restaurant. Puzzles and German Beer @ Puzzles? The guys over at Peterborough’s new independent bar Puzzles? on Bridge Street have two great events planned this month. Diwali Festival Lights up the City For the fifth year the Diwali celebrations in the centre of Peterborough will light up Cathedral Square and give us a great display of dance and song on Saturday October 14.

The colourful ancient Hindu festival of light will see Bhangra dancing and other dance displays, music and songs, a Rangoli workshop, traditional Indian costumes and the chance to try some delicious Indian cuisine. Peterborough has a great series of festivals and this is the latest one guaranteed to brighten up an autumn day! It’s free and is being held from 11.30am until 4.30pm and will be a real feast for the senses.

Riverford Pumpkin Day It’s the month to carve your pumpkins so head down to Pumpkin Day at Riverford’s organic farm at Sacrewell, Peterborough, on Saturday October 28 between 11am and 4pm.

The event’s open to all, and as well as choosing your pumpkin from the fields you’ll be able to carve it ready for Halloween. Tickets cost £3 and each child’s ticket includes a pumpkin to

Wizardry And Witchcraft @ Queensgate

For October half term they’re turning Queensgate into ‘Screams-gate’ with plenty of witchcraft and sorcery to cast a spell over young wizards.

For two tremendously terrifying days, it’s time to dust off your broom stick and visit the Queensgate School of Potions and Wizardry. On October 25 and 26, be prepared for entertainment, crafts, theatre and games in an enthralling weekend for both children and adults – all for free. Mini monsters can expect theatrical storytelling, join in and make a magic potion in The Witch’s Kitchen, but watch out for Emlyn the kitchen frog who hops to life for the ribbiting Frog Show every hour. There’s wand making in the witch craft area where families will be able to weave magic into their wands and perfect their flying on the broomstick flight simulator. Still Dangerous Read the title. This is why Cello Renda struggles to find anyone who will fight him and I’m not surprised after he once again lived up to his ‘Dangerous’ ring name when he knocked out Leon McKenzie at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green last month. Cello’s defeat of the former Posh striker turned boxer means he’s now the Southern Area champion but more importantly it’s lined him up with a chance of fighting for the British title that he so desperately wants. And Cello deserves a crack at it too. He’s been boxing for 14 years and in that time, has won three belts at different weights and successfully defended two of them. He’s never ducked a fight and lives and breathes his craft. Cello is dedicated to his profession and has spent the last few years cultivating that enthusiasm into the lives of children and young people who’ve learnt a thing or two about boxing, fitness and discipline from our champion. But what really sets Cello apart from a lot of other fighters is that he’s a pure warrior in the ring. Almost every contest Cello has been in is a proper scrap. He just loves a tearup and is one of the hardest punchers in his division. Basically, if you want to see a proper toe-to-toe fight then go and watch a Cello Renda bout – you won’t be disappointed. the battle with Leon, Cello absorbed a confident start by his opponent but by the middle rounds when a boxer has to find another gear, Cello’s experience shone through and he began to take control of the fight. Cello’s constant shots to Leon’s body took their toll and by the ninth round a couple of swift combinations sent him crashing to the canvas where he remained for several minutes while trying to recover. McKenzie subsequently retired after the fight and the pair have since been exchanging telephone dialogue. And that’s the sincerity of Leon, a player who when I was employed at Posh, was a delight to work with off the pitch as much as he was to watch on it. The same can be said for Cello. He’s one of the nicest people you’ll meet but get him angry in the ring and you’ll pay the price.

Aldo Schooled on Pizzaborough

Thumbs Up to an Epic Statue It had to be done. I’ve seen dozens of Posh fans posting photos on their social media feeds mimicking the great Chris Turner. So, not wanting to be left out, here’s my effort. The statue is fantastic. It feels as though we’ve got Chris back and with it the buzz he created at London Road. This is a proud moment in Posh history.

Running on Empty? The Kinsey Institute says sex drive is boosted by 75% if you do 3.5 hours of running a week. An energy-zapping 30 minutes a day. Maybe the institute meant ‘buggered’ instead of ‘boosted’.

It’s a bit sad but I’ve always been proud of our city’s pizza heritage and when celebrity chef Aldo Zilli asked me for the lowdown I was happy to oblige (and scoff a few slices with him). Aldo was the special guest at this year’s Italian Festival. He was impressed by the event and by the generations of Italians that live in our city but it’s the pizza story that captured him the most. I told him that Pizza Express founder Peter Boizot is a Peterborian and that a portrait of him was in our local Pizza Express restaurant. I took him there and the look on the faces of people eating as he nonchalantly wondered in, took a photo and casually walked out was priceless.

He couldn’t believe The Pizza House introduced us to pizza 40 years ago and he didn’t realise Peterborough is home to pizza delivery pioneers Papa Luigi, who were the first in the UK to deliver pizzas to doorsteps – long before Domino’s Pizza arrived on these shores. We all made Aldo and his family so welcome that he’s offered to return to next year’s festival and put on a cooking demonstration (yes, to include pizza). Better still he’s promised to bring along a celebrity friend of his whose name I can’t reveal but let’s just say the ladies will be impressed. Watch this space for an announcement…

Still Getting a Pizza the Action And talking of chefs and pizza, big shout to Nino at the Pizza Parlour and Music Café. Nino is over 70 years of age and he’s still making a mean pizza. The man is always pristine and a he’s a perfectionist. Watching him make pizza is poetry in motion. Surely, he’s the city’s oldest chef? Legend. www.espmag.co.uk

Aston goes from back flips to ballroom! Having become a judge on Got to Dance in 2012, Peterborough’s Aston Merrygold is more used to being the one dishing out the criticism. But now the tables are being turned as he’s signed up to be a contestant on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, a challenge he’s absolutely relishing, as ESP reporter Sarah Tempest found out.

“I’m so happy to be joining Strictly 2017, it is such a brilliant show and I’ve followed it for years,” he says enthusiastically. “I’m both nervous and excited to learn from the professionals about a whole new way of dancing!” This is, it has to be said, a bit of a turnaround from when I interviewed him back in 2012 and Sarah Tempest asked him about the chances of him doing reality TV. “Now I’m a dance judge,” he said back then, “I don’t think I need to prove myself on Strictly. And I’m certainly not the kind of guy who wants to throw himself off things and eat Kangaroo balls!” But whilst his feelings about ‘kangaroo balls’ may be the same, he’s clearly changed his mind about ‘glitter balls’ and is currently odds on favourite to win the series this year. And whilst we don’t want to add to the pressure, he is following in some very big Peterborian fleckle steps with the ‘boro’s Louis Smith winning the show in 2012 and Lance Corporal Cassidy Little winning the People’s Strictly for Comic Relief. But is he up to the challenge? “If someone asked me a few months ago, I’d say oh yes maybe [I’d rate myself] an 8 but this is a totally different ball game. This type of dancing, I’d be a 2 or 3. I’ve never done a class, I’ve never gone to college and I’ve never trained.” He points out, “I used to just watch Usher, Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake videos and teach myself! This whole style of movement is completely alien so I’m starting again.” Aston is thrilled to have been partnered with Jeanette Manrara, who recently broke female (and male!) hearts everywhere when she married fellow Strictly dancer, and professional hotstuff, Aljaz. Before the pairings were announced, Aston revealed what exactly he was hoping for in a partner – “The shortest?” he laughed. “I say that but even when the heels are on they are tall! But I’ve got my Cuban heels so I’ll be alright. The professionals on this show [are] exceptional and I’m lucky enough to be on it, as long as I’m not being towered over!” And Aston, who recently announced he’s expecting his first child with his partner, is also relishing the challenge of once again competing against Alexandra Burke, who pipped Aston’s band JLS to the X Factor title in 2008, despite JLS being the firm favourites throughout the series. “It’s Round 2!” he jokingly declared before admitting – “She’s a fighter and a proper powerhouse when it comes to dancing; so much charisma. She’s an incredible woman.” Can the loss be avenged? Only time (and lots of votes!) will tell but one thing’s for sure, the pride of Peterborough is at stake once again on Strictly, but we know Aston won’t let the ‘boro down. We tweeted Aston to wish him well and told him Peterborough and ESP Magazine are right behind him. In between rehearsals we received this reply from Aston – “Thanks very much! Just thank u for the continued support it's going to be a great series with an amazing bunch of people!”

Food Glori us Food I have spoken to a fair few people who often visit the Showcase Cinema in Peterborough and yet still have no idea that there’s much more than popcorn and nachos on the menu. That comfy seating area that’s been there for a while now… it isn’t just a place to leisurely wait for your film to start. It’s where you can order food such as burgers, pizzas, paninis and more. The food is refreshingly made to order, giving much more flavour than we’ve come to expect from any cinema. The 12” pizzas come with a choice of margherita, spicy pepperoni, beef brisket and chicken & bacon. My stuffed crust spicy pepperoni was generous with the cheese and rivalled my regular take-away favourites. Also available to buy is a 6oz chargrilled patty topped with cheese, bacon and caramelised onions – served in a brioche bun with salad and fries. Perhaps you’d rather a Cajun chicken burger, marinated in Cajun spices, chargrilled and topped off with onion rings and salsa – served in a brioche bun with salad, fries and blue cheese dip. For those wanting something a little more traditional, Showcase also serves Posh Dogs. Their own beech smoked hot dogs come with a choice of chilli beef with cheese (my personal favourite), pulled pork with jalapeno and smoky bean and roasted vegetable chilli. As the food is made fresh, it does mean a longer wait. You could be looking at up to 15-20minutes for your order, but I assure you it’s worth the wait. With the food, a fab selection of beers and wines and let’s not forget the film… you’re in for a great night out. And as a Drunken Dog Combo (a hot dog with a pint of Budweiser or Stella Cidre) and a Beer and Burger combo costing £9.95 each, it’s an affordable one too.

Happy Birthday to the Pizza Parlour! The Pizza Parlour and Music Café on Cowgate, which has brought delicious wood-fired pizza to the city, has just celebrated its first anniversary and they’ve been partying hard! In the last year this great addition to the city’s dining out scene has served up traditionally cooked Italian pasta and pizzas accompanied by regular nights of feel-good live music and has provided us with a new wine and cocktail bar (weekends after 10pm) to keep the night alive later into the evening. The Pizza Parlour and Music Café is local, Italian owned and independent and we think they’ve had a great first year. There are plenty of reasons to dine out there but surely the gorgeous thin-based, crunch perfect pizza from their wood-fired oven is reason enough. If you pop along with friends we can recommend their infamous Bada-Bing 20” pizza – it’s definitely made for sharing and is just wonderful!

Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn talks about football, TV and old age!

igel Winterburn is an ambassador for a Peterborough based charity that ESP magazine has teamed up with this year, Sports Connections Foundation. Although he’s very humble about his career, both as a footballer and TV pundit, he acknowledges that he worked very hard for it. Like a lot of the young, disadvantaged children Sports Connections Foundation works with, Nigel was not a keen academic student. “I hated school, but I never missed a day of it,” Nigel explained. “The only thing that kept me going to school though, was sport. I was allowed to miss certain lessons to be able to join in with the older sports teams in the school, so even though I hated chemistry, maths and English, I always had a smile on my face when I saw PE on my timetable.” Nigel admits that he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life as a youngster. “If I hadn’t gone into football, I’m sure I would’ve just drifted from job to job – I had a few interviews though and came close to working at Jaguar which is where most people worked in my area in those days.” 20 www.espmag.co.uk

Nigel was spotted by Birmingham Football Club at the age of sixteen, where he signed on as an apprentice. “I never thought I would be a pro footballer – I had the dream of course, but I didn’t necessarily think I was good enough. I was quite late into football compared to people these days who get picked up at 9 years-old, but I feel so lucky to have had my dream job.” After a really good season Nigel was suddenly dropped by the new manager, and this presented him with his first big challenge. “Most people have an agent, but I didn’t, so I decided to be proactive and find a club or get a recommendation, not wait around for someone to find me.” He called Jim Smith who was at Oxford, and through hard work in training he was put forward to Wimbledon FC – and as we know, the rest is history! But Nigel laughed at the difference in the cost of transfer fees compared to today; “Can you believe that my transfer fee from Dave Bassett to Jim at Oxford was a bottle of whisky? I hope it was an expensive one!” Nigel first got involved with Sports Connections Foundation a few years ago, after getting a phone call from the charity’s founder. “Junior (McDougald) needed to organise a Sporting Wish for a seriously ill child who was a huge Arsenal fan,” Nigel remembers. “With my connections, I could help liaise with the club to organise dates that would fit around the child’s treatment, I managed to secure a chauffeur that works with us, and make sure the big players were available on the day.” He’s been privileged to meet a lot of the young children that the charity’s supported, and is in awe of the amount of work that the Sports Connections Foundation team do to keep everything

running smoothly. “Whether it’s seriously ill children who need something special to look forward to, or providing exit routes for disadvantaged children to guide them away from a life of crime, if sport can inspire them to live a healthy, happy lifestyle then we’ve achieved a goal, even if you’ve only changed one child’s life. “The charity puts in an amazing amount of work, and I know that because I can never get hold of Junior on the first try! And you need more and more people to get involved to keep moving the charity forward.” Nigel still works closely with Arsenal and feels he has a good balance of work and family life. He attended the Cycle Splash Dash event in Cambridge in August (an event which raised over £8,000 for the charity). Despite a recent achilles tendon injury, he managed a sensible amount of miles on the spin bike alongside Nicole to add to the overall target of 1,500 miles. Nigel still trains three times a week playing football with friends, and also uses his spin bike at home. Oliver Regis managed to get ringside seats at the Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas! The local lad had bought a $2,500 ticket for the 'Fight of the Century'. Even at that price, he could barely see the ring from where he was sat at the top of the T-Mobile Arena. Most people would’ve purchased a pair of binoculars, but not Oli Regis. Instead, he posed as part of Mayweather's security team and walked past the other guards who failed to scan his ticket. During my chat with the professional blagger, I wondered if making it to the third row was always the plan. He told me, “Absolutely. I wore my best suit so I didn’t look out of place mingling with the rich and famous and I was very confident it would

Did he feel out of his depth at any point? “The only moment I thought I was screwed was when P Diddy entered the building and he was walking towards me,” Oliver told me. “His security guard asked to see my ticket as the seat belonged to P Diddy himself. I moved to another empty seat and was sat just five seats away from Vinnie Jones and two rows directly in front of me was Leonardo DiCaprio.” To prove to his friends and family that this incredible experience had really happened, Regis had selfies with fellow spectators, including Mayweather's father, Gerard Butler, JLo, Amir Khan and Chris Hemsworth. His favourite was – “Iron Mike Tyson as I've been a fan of his for years and I have fond memories of

watching him fight Frank Bruno with my dad when I was twelve years old. When I asked for a picture, his reaction was golden. All he did was nod his head without saying a single word.” Of course not everybody was accommodating. “LeBron James refused a selfie, as did JLo, who simply said ‘No thank you!” The story of this epic blag went viral, which came as a surprise to Oli. “I honestly can't believe how big the story got,” he told me. “I’ve featured in some of the biggest newspapers and I’ve had interview requests from all over the world. I’ve been on BBC, ITV (who filmed me working at The Kings Head in Stamford). I was also on ESPN Sports Centre on USA TV, an Australian morning TV Show, Lads Bible, UniLad and now ESP Magazine.” And how has the local lad taken to the new found fame? “I went for a night out in Stamford soon after the story became viral and the response was pretty crazy. I got out the taxi and three guys asked if I was Oli Regis. When I said yes, they asked if they could get a selfie with me, and I said of course you can. By the end of the night I had done over twenty selfies. It was a night I'll never forget – just like my time in Vegas.” With this interview taking place over the phone, Oli is yet to get a selfie with Mikey Clarke from ESP Magazine. It was the 22nd Thorney Live Music Festival this year, keeping us entertained straight after the city’s Beer Festival came to an end. The event, originated by organiser Andy Stuffins, has raised in excess of £60,000 for charity over the years and has added another healthy amount to the pot this time for Cancer Research UK, NGNPUK and Thorney Ex Servicemen’s Club. Entertainment came from Third Stone from The Sun, Up The Function, Grounded, The Mesh Band, Brotherhoods Roundabout, Amy Palmer and The Motor City Vipers in the grounds of Bedford Hall. The 40th Peterborough Beer Festival was a huge success with over 30,000 heading down to try out over 420 real ales and down 85,000 pints of beer alone! The weather was good, the music was great, there was a new gin bar and two, yes two, gold award winning ales in the beer judging. ESP’s own Mikey Clarke was one of several helping judge the beers and tweeted live from the session (he may still have a headache!). Our photographer Mike Harris captured many of you having a cracking time seeing out the summer in style. The ninth Italian Festival organised by the Italian Community Association was a great weekend event in Cathedral Square with a special evening dinner at The Fleet. Annette Joyce, service director for city services and communications at the city council told ESP – “This was a really special, vibrant weekend and one that the city should be really proud of. There was singing, dancing, lots of good food and a great sense of community. “It was busy on both days despite the rain. Especially on Sunday, when celebrity guest Aldo Zilli attracted the crowds. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the festival and there are already lots of plans in place to make sure it’s a really special one.” Photos by Mike Harris and Pep Cipriano. Anticipation is off the chain for acclaimed New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi’s take on the God of Thunder. The hectically-frenzied and comedyladen trailer notched fantastic feedback, and coupled with a colourful zany PR campaign, leaves this looking like the perfect lead in to the third Avengers film – particularly as it boasts Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk who was last seen being launched into the cosmos during the finale of Age of Ultron.

Grandmaster – definitely gives a fantastic indication that this third solo instalment for the Son of Odin won’t be the dark and quite dull affair that was the sequel. Ragnarok indicates the end of the world in Norse mythology, but Marvel is only getting started with the lightning and thunder – as their cinematic universe just gets better and better…

Scott is on executive producer duties for the follow-up – set thirty years after the events of the first film – where a new blade runner, Ryan Gosling’s (La La Land) LAPD Officer K, unearths a longburied secret (involving Jared Leto’s villain) that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. This discovery leads the young officer on a quest to find Harrison Ford’s legendary Deckard, a former blade runner, who’s been missing for three decades. It will be intriguing to see if a film with such a dark and brooding underbelly can still find an audience more than a generation later…

This sequel to the divisive open-world shooter improves extensively over the ‘guinea pig’ original game – and could now prove to be the destiny for many naysayers. When Halo developers Bungie unleashed the revolutionary-tagged MMO shooter three years ago it split gamers across the board – but after some annual expansions this overhaul has undoubtedly improved the overall experience. With honed gameplay, a fully-fledged cinematic story, and improved user interface, social media feedback has definitely been adhered to, as humanity’s last safe city falls after an overwhelming invasion by the brutal Cabal ‘Red Legion’ – led by their imposing commander Dominus Ghaul. The lack of new enemies, a slightly niggling sense of overfamiliarity, and major annoyance of micro-transactions, may be gripes for some, but with a refined multiplayer that shifts its focus to a more tactical four-versus-four arena, this sequel definitely rewards the persistent player – with a plethora of end-game content opened up at Level 20. It may still not quite by the ‘complete’ package as of yet, but it still offers something that stands out as being distinctly different – and with patience your ‘destiny’ can still be a truly rewarding one.

his feisty pop powerhouse has been around longer than you think – she made her debut in 2000 – and while Get The Party Started is one of her most well known, and well aired tracks, you soon realise looking back just how many great songs she’s put out over the years! Now there’s plenty of new stuff to get your ears tuned into with her seventh – yes seventh – album Beautiful Trauma being released on October 13. Her powerful new single What About Us is proving to be another hit and we love it. She proved her vocal credentials recently blasting out the single as part of Radio 1’s Live Lounge month. Pink showed just what she’s made of with emotive renditions of some of her songs plus a fabulous Sam Smith cover. Well known for her strong opinions it was no surprise that when she popped into the Radio One breakfast show with Nick Grimshaw she told Grimmy – “I’m a little ashamed right now of America and its leaders. And I think the American Deam is still alive because there’s still a lot of beautiful people in the country that have beautiful hearts and minds. I just think the American dream has changed from what it used to be.”

Her stripped back acoustic version of Who Knew – a track she’s often claimed to be her favourite – was a powerhouse performance, and Pink said – “It’s never lost its meaning” for her and has become relevant about different people in her life over the years. After a rousing version of the song Try she revealed – “This is the classic case of my mum’s favourite song of every album being the one song I didn’t write!” She rounded off her Live Lounge set with her cover of Sam Smith’s hit Stay With Me and revealed she just loves the artist and his voice – “There are songs that come out once in a while that you wish you wrote and that was one of them.” Pink was also all over the internet and press following her inspiring speech at the VMA awards dedicated to her young daughter Willow. While these sort of speeches can sometimes make us cringe this was actually a worthy message after her daughter, just 6 years-old, had told her mum she thought she was the ugliest kid she

Used Car Problems Costing Young Drivers Getting your first car can be exciting but also nerve wracking – you’re tight on budget but don’t want to end up with a banger that’ll let you down the first time you pull out onto Nene Parkway!

New Young Driver Scheme Pulls Up in the Boro They say you’re never too young to learn and a ground breaking new scheme just launched for the first time in Peterborough aims to prove the point. I couldn’t wait to gain my independence and hit the road and when I got my Vauxhaul Astra 1.3s back in the day, it was a dream come true. What I wouldn’t have given to get behind the wheel sooner but with this new scheme even 10 year-olds will be getting the chance to learn to drive a proper car – not just their remote control ones. Young Driver offers driving lessons for 10-17 year-olds, which are held in real cars with experienced instructors – but on specially created courses on private property. The idea behind the scheme is to create a safer next generation of young drivers – currently one in five has an accident within six months of passing their test, but research shows learning to drive over a longer time and from a younger age can half that risk. The first session’s recently been held at the East of England Arena with more dates lined up on November 18 and December 16. The Young Driver events are held on a large, specially designed course at the East of England Arena, offering anyone over the age of 10 the chance to drive a car in a safe but realistic environment. Four hundred people are killed in accidents involving young drivers every year in the UK. Shockingly, one in five newly qualified drivers crash within six months of passing their test, rising to 40 per cent of 17 year-old males. But for those who have taken a Young Driver course, the rate of accidents in that worrying first six months drops by more than a half, to fewer than one in ten. During the lessons dual controlled Vauxhall Corsas are used and tuition is provided by highly qualified driving instructors. On a specially constructed road system with traffic signs, and specific areas for practising manoeuvres, youngsters are encouraged to consider responsible driving and are given time to perfect the necessary driving skills without the pressures of public roads. It appears young drivers are the ones most likely to end up on the hard shoulder calling their parents for help. Nearly half (46%) of Britain’s youngest drivers (18-24) have found faults with used cars in the first six months after buying them. This is much higher than the number of vehicle faults discovered by Brits on average (28%). This means significantly more 18-24 year olds have discovered issues with recently bought used cars than the average UK driver (28%), suggesting that young drivers are opting to spend less when buying a car, but are being hit by unexpected higher operational costs. Simon Benson, Director of Motoring Services at AA Vehicle Inspections, explains: “Such a disparity between younger drivers and the UK average is concerning. Young drivers with limited budgets are most likely to buy older, higher mileage cars that inevitably are going to suffer maintenance problems. So while they are potentially spending less on the forecourt they are having to fork out more for repairs. It also raises the question of whether young drivers’ perceived lack of knowledge may be being exploited by a few unscrupulous vendors.” Across all age groups and regions, the highest volume of faults were with electrics (21%), tyres (20%) and engine troubles (18%). Simon adds: “When working out projected costs in the run up to buying a car, consumers rarely factor in unexpected outlays – such as the need to get a fault fixed in the first few months after driving off a forecourt.”

Here are the most common faults Simon recommends you look out for: Test drive – check if the car pulls slightly to the left or right and that the car pulls up in a straight line when you apply the brakes, especially if you brake hard. Gears – listen for odd noises, ensure the gear change is smooth and that there’s no sharp ‘bite’ or ‘slip’ on the clutch.

Tyres – check the tyres for at least 3mm of tread and make sure there are no serious scuffs, bulges or cracking on the sidewalls and that the wear is even. Uneven wear suggests a problem with the car’s tracking, something that can be easily rectified before you pay for the car.

Electrics – make sure all the electrics work, particularly the wipers and lights, including reversing and brake lights. Damage – look for any obvious damage repair such as a slight change in the finish of the paintwork on a wing for instance as this could suggest a past collision.

Diet was a major factor in seeing those studied through to their 100th birthday so here are a few things to consider which could see you blowing out all of those candles on that big birthday cake!

If you’re hoping to get a telegram from the Queen and party ‘til you’re 100, it’s time to live it up with some positive vibes! Research suggests that how long you will live isn’t determined by how long your parents lived but it’s ‘how’ you live your life that’s key to a longer (or shorter) lifespan.

We now see from the emerging study of epigenetics that factors in our everyday living can switch our genes on or off (our genetic coding). So, if we live a life of continuous stress, bad food and other habits and surround ourselves with negativity then these environmental triggers can signal to our DNA. I’m not here to bring you down – this might sound depressing at first but actually it’s quite empowering as it turns out that we’re more in control of the signals we can send into the cell than we think.

Whilst what we eat has a profound effect on our gene expression the study found that those centenarians actually had different diets to each other, except many of them ate a high percentage of plant foods. And, more importantly they weren’t exposed to the standard British diet or American diet high in refined fats/sugars, excess animal protein, fizzy drinks etc.

I’m not sure about you but I want to live a healthy and active life into my old age, I don’t want to be rattling around pumped full of medical drugs if I can help it. Many centenarians (those who’ve reached 100 plus) from around the

What was really important in this study (check out The Blue Zones for more information on this), were key ingredients that when mixed together seemed to allow these people to live longer happier lives and without medical drugs/pills, surgery or other. A mix of a good diet, good outlook, socialising and exercise seems to be the blend you need for a long life and not just one magic ingredient.

These folks studied ate a good portion of plant based foods and limited the amount of meat they ate. They ate much smaller meals too, with one of them being accompanied by a small glass of good quality red wine rich in polyphenols. So stock up on the veg, eat more plants and less meat.

It’s interesting to see that they sit down to eat and enjoy a main meal with all the family, something we all seem to be doing less of these days. Sit and enjoy foods instead of stuffing it in at your computer.

Wellbeing for a Long Life The study revealed they had all reached this ripe old age with a sense of purpose, of belonging, they knew why they were getting up in the morning – so find your sense of purpose, what are your goals, dreams/wishes? Other aspects which showed up which you could follow are: •

They still like to learn something new – you’re never too old!

They gather around friends and family before dinner to socialise and keep their sense of belonging – so don’t be a hermit – work, home and back again, be more social.

•

Those studied all had a spiritual practice/a belief which carries them forward – enjoy mindfulness, meditate or something else that gives you a sense of wellbeing and direction.

•

They move their body/exercise – so make sure you make an effort to move every day.

•

They enjoy quiet times – pull back from too much socialising, turn off gadgets, especially that TV!

•

They enjoy family time and those who have the same values as themselves – so find your tribe, people that hold the same core values as you.

•

They love and appreciate all of life – learn to find love again in the simplest of things, a sunset, a flower, a sea view etc.

Taking part in this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run? Here are five things ESP’s Mikey Clarke says you can look forward to… On Sunday October 8 at 10.30am, thousands of people will start running the Perkins Great Eastern Run. It’s an event that will see participants of all levels – pro’s such as ESP’s action Mikey Clarke man, Darren Grigas and amateur’s such as… well, me. I’ve taken part numerous times in the past and can’t speak highly enough about it. My articles on the run usually focus on reasons why you should enter. However, October 6 at noon is the cut-off point for entrants – yep, not long! Therefore, unless you’re considering the Anna's Hope Fun Run, it’s likely to be too late for you to squeeze in enough training (depending on your current fitness level).

So… instead, here’s an article for those already signed up and ready to go. To get you hyped up for the big day, these are (in my opinion) the top five things to look forward to: 5) Achieving your personal best. Thanks to the flat course, it’s more than realistic for you to beat your previous record.

2) You’ll meet amazing locals. The route is just about filled entirely with spectators ready to cheer you on (including the ESP team!). Without these people I could’ve given up on the run many times in previous years. No promises, but I’ve even known people to hand out sweets and drinks. And let’s not forget you – the amazing people that are likely running for a good cause – making a huge difference to numerous charities. 1) The feeling you get crossing that finish line. You’ve spent months training and begrudgingly turned down cake at work. It all becomes worth it once you cross that line. The overwhelming sense of pride you get as that medal goes around your neck makes everything worthwhile. Whatever you’re running for – whether it’s a personal challenge, for a good cause or both – the ESP team wish you all the best and look forward to seeing you there.

4) The atmosphere. At one stage during 2016’s run, more than 10,000 people were on The Embankment as runners crossed the finish line to cheers from a fantastic number of supporters and spectators. With free entertainment at the start and throughout, it’s quite the party.

We all have those bucket list things we plan to tick off ‘one day’, these can be as humble or as wildly ambitious as you like. One for me, like many others has long been to skydive. Thanks to a birthday treat from my partner and kids, I was lucky enough to tick that box recently, and also walk away to tell the tale.

K Parachuting operates from Sibson Airfield on the outskirts of Peterborough so I didn’t have to go far either. I didn’t know what to expect other than around 50 seconds of freefall from 13,000ft at up to 120mph, then all being well, my chute would open and I’d have a leisurely descent to safety. The atmosphere at the jump site was great and the weather was good. There was a big crowd of jumpers and supporters, families and dogs, music playing, the smell of some tasty food coming from the kitchen and the chance to watch the faces of other

people returning from their jumps and weigh up how it went for them. When my turn came, I was briefed along with other jumpers, by the chap running the whole place. Hearing from a guy with more than 11,000 jumps under his belt is reassuring when you’re going up for the first time and trying to block out the ‘what ifs’ that run through your mind. I met my tandem chap (Dan) and established that he’d been jumping for years and I was his fifth jump of the day (my new hero). Loading onto the plane and taking off was nice and chilled, I was waiting for the moment when my nerves would kick in and my heart start racing involuntarily. We were even watching my heart rate on my watch to

I was pre-warned to keep my mouth closed but couldn’t help but laugh and scream all the way so quickly got a dry mouth. Jed was following us as I gave him all sorts of gestures and beaming grins. We performed a few spins and then it came time to pull the cord and release our parachute. The chute opening was like jamming on the brakes, with a bit of a yank on the harness around my legs we then slowed to a graceful descent, I removed my goggles and we had a chat. I was encouraged to steer the chute left and right to spin us and then Dan took over and had a bit of fun spinning us one way and then the next before bringing us to a smooth landing on the grass as planned. It was everything I’d hoped it would be and then some. I’m very tempted to take up the offer of further jumps to lead to a solo jump. UK Parachuting provide professional training, tandem and solo jumps. It’s a truly amazing thing to do (if this floats your boat), and for me was an amazing gift, and we all have those people you don’t know what to buy for. Here’s a great idea for the list!

W1A As the evenings get colder and darker, I’m not ashamed to admit that I watch a lot of TV when I’m not at comedy gigs, and sometimes a night watching something that’ll make you laugh is just what you need. If you’re looking for some inspiration, why not put your slipper socks on and check out these binge-worthy comedy shows on our screens this month:

W1A Returning to our screens for its third and final season, much-loved mockumentary W1A will be offering viewers some warmth and mirth this month despite the chilly weather. Originally a spin-off of the awardwinning Twenty Twelve, this BBC office-based show is ideal for fans of The Office and Spinal Tap thanks to its selfreferential comedy and its genuinely cringe-worthy characters, including Siobhan Sharpe who is brilliantly played by Jessica Hynes as a clueless brand consultant and the Head of ‘Perfect Curve’. New episodes of W1A are broadcast every Monday at 10pm on BBC Two.

Taskmaster If you’re not already familiar with Taskmaster, this show on Dave challenges a mixture of established and up and coming comedians with a

variety of bizarre tasks for the entertainment of the show’s host, Greg Davies. With season five currently on our screens featuring Nish Kumar, Aisling Bea and Mark Watson, and with the show recently announcing a ‘Champion of Champions’ special in December, this is a great show that guarantees hilarity every episode. New episodes of series five are broadcast every Wednesday at 9pm on Dave, however all episodes of series 14 are available to watch on UKTV Player.

Rick and Morty A sci-fi cartoon show that’s not for the faint-hearted, Rick and Morty has developed a cult following thanks to its creativity, wit, and shock humour. The show follows the smartest scientist in the universe Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty as they embark on unpredictable adventures every episode, from recording a song for an intergalactic talent show to tracking down a Szechwan dipping sauce from 1998. For the past few months new episodes have been published every Saturday, however all episodes from season 1-2 are available to watch back to back on Netflix UK. The final episode of season 3, ‘The Rickchurian Mortydate’, will be available on Netflix UK on October 7.

I was so looking forward to getting my hands on tickets to see Joe Lycett when he tours at the Key Theatre in March, but it looks like the rest of Peterborough also had the same idea as the Fringe favourite has sold out not just one, but TWO nights next year. Performing his brand new stand-up show ‘I’m About to Lose Control and I Think Joe Lycett’ on March 8 and 9 next year, it’s really no surprise considering his regular TV show appearances as well as his hilarious book ‘Parsnips, Buttered: How to win at modern life, one email at a time’, which was released to rave reviews last year. If you’re in the same boat as me however, not all hope is lost, as tickets are still available at nearby local theatres in Northampton and King’s Lynn. Not only that but as a result of the rest of the UK liking Lycett so much he’s added some extra tour dates, but if anyone’s got a spare ticket to his gig at the Key, could someone please give me a shout?

Classic Halloween Comedies at the Moonlight Drive-In Whilst Halloween is the highlight for many people this month, for the squeamish and easily startled it’s a minefield trying to find an evening that won’t leave you checking underneath your bed when you get home. Speaking as someone who watches any gory horror film or TV show through the small gaps in between my fingers, that’s why I was so pleased to see the Moonlight Drive-In at Serpentine Green will be hosting some classic comedy films between October 27 and 31, including Beetlejuice, Hocus Pocus and Ghostbusters. Ideal for families and my fellow wusses, you’ll also be pleased to know that they all start at 6.15pm, which gives you enough time to get a takeaway afterwards and return home for a nightmare-free slumber. You can keep your Saw and your Friday 13th, this Halloween I’ll be quite happy to watch Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyd tackle the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man... Comedy Gold It’s one of the most memorable and repeated moments in British comedy. The time the chandelier drops from the ceiling in Only Fools & Horses! But did you know that a man from Peterborough played a key role in bringing the scene to the screen?

Mike – “The cutting room output consisted mostly of exterior or special location shooting. For example the studio audience would watch the actors performing on the studio set, but as soon as an actor went through a door, it would cut to the film inserts which the audience would watch on large monitors about their heads. “These filmed inserts would have been shot about a week before on location. The film would come to me in the cutting room the day after shooting on 16mm film as a ‘cutting copy’. (That is to say not the transmission copy). The sound would be on separate 16mm fully coated magnetic film stock. This is why clapper boards are so important as a synchronisation point at the start of each take. Mike Jackson was a BBC film editor who grew up in Peterborough and started his career at the city’s Odeon cinema as a projectionist during the 1960’s. By the early 1980’s he’d worked his way up from a trainee film editor and was working on the BBC’s comedy output in London, working on series 2 & 3 of Only Fools, including the chandelier episode, or as it’s better known, A Touch of Glass. ESP’s Marc Hernandez put a few questions to Mike on his memories of the show. ESP – As film editor am I right in thinking you would’ve been responsible for editing together any scenes shot on location (i.e. Not in the studio). If so, how did that process work?

“I would have a script to consult to follow the dialogue and then it was up to me to choose the best take and most suitable angle of shot for each scene. The shooting ratio used to average 16 to 1. That is to say for every 16 minutes shot, one minute would be in the final edit. A couple of times Ray Butt the director invited me on location. Once in a graveyard for The Yellow Peril and once on a night shoot for Friday the 14th.”

He also said that whenever the series would be entered for competitions, this was the sequence he would send in.” What are your memories of David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst and Lennard Pearce. Did you spend much time with them? “Apart from meeting them on location I met them again at a sound dubbing theatre. I was not happy with some of the voiceovers on Friday the 14th when they were in the can on the way to Cornwall. So I asked the director to bring them to the dubbing theatre when we did the sound mix to re-record the lines. I was really surprised what a posh voice Lennard Pearce had in real life. Nothing at all like Granddad.” Was there a reason why you didn’t continue with the fourth series? “After series three I seem to remember that I was allocated a Dick Emery six part – all film – comedy thriller. That is 3 hours of running time – like cutting a long feature film so I wasn’t available for Only Fools.” In total, Mike edited 12 episodes of the show: The Long Legs of the Law, Ashes to Ashes, No Greater Love, The Yellow Peril, It Never Rains, A Touch of Glass, Homesick, Healthy Competition, Friday the 14th, Yesterday Never Comes, Wanted and Who’s a Pretty Boy. A dozen cushty episodes of one of the nation’s favourite sitcoms. Long live hooky street!

Possibly the funniest episode I cut was A Touch of Glass which featured the scene with the falling chandelier. When Ray Butt, the director came to see the cut for the

the month, invited a family who’ve had their world turned upside down in the last few years to be special guests.

Last month, Marcus Maddison learned through the football club of a supporter who’d been in hospital for three weeks over at Addenbrookes in Cambridge. The season ticket holder had part of his leg amputated and was really struggling, as you would expect. Marcus gave up his time to travel down that treacherous A14 and the smile on the guy’s face when we walked in to surprise him was worth any length of traffic jam.

s a football club, we’re very much aware that we’re an important part of the community and the players can make a positive impact on supporters, old and young, and in the opening weeks of the season, we’ve seen that at first hand. We often get letters or emails into the club requesting assistance or help for people that are struggling with illness or injury and we endeavour to do all we can to try and put smiles on faces and the first team squad have bought into that and make themselves available to complete visits or look after those who are struggling.

Based in Baston, our manager Grant McCann plays a huge part in the community in which he lives and ahead of the game with Milton Keynes Dons at the ABAX Stadium earlier in

Teenager Ryley Briston was a happy, healthy sporty 14 year-old lad, attending Bourne Grammar School, played football for Blackstones u14 team and was also running competitively for Nene Valley Harriers. In May 2016, after returning home from playing football in the park with his friends he suffered a massive seizure. He was rushed to Peterborough hospital then transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge where they found he had a bleed on his brain caused by an AVM. This has left his brain with considerable damage due to a prolonged period of oxygen starvation. Ryley underwent surgery to stem the bleeding on his brain and was put into an induced coma and was on PICU (intensive care) at Addenbrookes for five weeks. Ryley and his mum spent 12 weeks at Addenbrookes Hospital and a further seven months away from home having intensive rehabilitation. Things like this can create memories and I know that Ryley had a great time, albeit a tiring one, at the game. We have also kickstarted our schools initiative for the new season with Jack Baldwin visiting Langtoft Primary School to hand out free tickets to pupils. The mascot, Peter Burrow, must have signed around 100 autographs on that morning, which shows what a wonderful impact he can have on youngsters.

AUSTIN GOLD It’s always great when we can report a Peterborough band’s been signed and we’re very excited about the future for Austin Gold.

hese talented local guys have been snapped up by the Jigsaw Label and are about to release their debut album Before Dark Clouds putting them on course for a breakthrough year ahead. The band includes David James Smith (vocals and lead guitars), Jack Cable (guitars), Lee Churchill (bass), Russell Hill (Hammond & keyboards) and Chris Ogden (drums) and they’ve been building a reputation as one of the best live acts around. Dave of course is a familiar face to many on the local circuit as he plays with the ever-popular, brilliant local covers band Children of the Revolution. He’s a hugely talented musician so it’s no surprise he’s turned out some great original material for his own project, Austin Gold, and it looks like the band is on the cusp of great things. Their album, as with all the label’s releases, was tracked to analogue tape and features a melting pot of influences on ten original super tight, rock-solid tracks. From heavy guitar riffs, to the most delicate heart-felt ballads, from atmospheric sonic landscapes, to hookdriven melodies, this is an album that deserves to be heard. They’ve been busy touring from Leeds to London but ESP caught up with Dave Smith for a quick chat… ESP – How did you feel when you first got signed – has it been a long time coming? Dave – “I've always been in original bands since the age of 16, exploring different genres over the years. But as a lead guitarist I tend to return to the broad spectrum of classic rock and when I founded Austin Gold, the

timing was right to really pursue my favoured style. So when we were offered a two album record deal with Jigsaw / Frontier Promotions, who have worked with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Paul Rogers and the like, the opportunity arrived perfectly.” How did the band get together? “Having always been the only guitarist in previous bands, I had the idea of a five piece with two guitars and keys for a while. So I approached some killer players and good friends to hook up and play some classic tracks. Russell Hill (keys) Jack Cable (guitar) Chris Ogden (drums) and Lee Churchill (bass). “It was evident there was a connection between us and so I set to work on some material.” What's the inspiration for Before Dark Clouds and how would you describe the band's music? “Our debut album, Before Dark Clouds, has received some great reviews described overall as ‘authentic, dynamic and cohesive’. It's more classic rock to pigeon hole our sound but I've drawn on influence from Pink Floyd to The Foo Fighters.” The gigs now seem to be coming thick and fast – what's been the best so far and what others are you looking forward to? “With the help from our PR team we've been playing some great shows across the country. Festivals, small clubs, 50 people to 3,000. They're all very rewarding as the response has been amazing.” You're well known locally, and well supported with Children of the

Revolution – what's it like for you to showcase your own music? “As a professional musician I've played in various cover bands and notably Children of the Revolution. Austin Gold are very busy promoting our album so it's a busy time.” You're on the same bill at Mama Liz's in Stamford with your COTR bandmate Rob who's also now putting out his own tunes – how will that be for you both? “We have a show at Mama Liz's in Stamford on Friday October 6 with our good friend Rob Bull who's debuting and launching his solo EP of which I've had the pleasure to record on. Quality songs – it's proper good! So it'll be a cool night as it's our first local gig since our album launch.”

“The ambition is to go all the way.” How far would you like to go with Austin Gold, what's your ambition? “The ambition is to go all the way. We work so well together, as a band and as brothers. We've individually ironed out what we want and don't want over the years so it's a very chilled environment to rehearse, write, perform and hang out.” Do you write all the songs or does everyone play a part? “I'm the songwriter which comes very naturally, starting with the music first which depicts the mood or vibe. I'm always aware of conversation or a predicament someone's in which inspires a nucleus for the lyrics. For the majority I write from personal experiences but a scene in a film or a headline can also ignite a lyrical theme. Once I've got the bones of a tune I take it to the band and we expand on arrangements. It's a process that's very productive.” www.austingold.band www.espmag.co.uk

A new charity music and arts festival is taking place this month as Oxjam comes to the city for the first time.

From October 20 – 22, Peterborough’s Oxjam Festival will fill every corner of the city with music, all raising valuable funds for Oxfam. Oxjam is a month-long series of events up and down the county and this year sees the first musical extravaganza hosted in Peterborough. Over the weekend, acts will perform in venues across the city, with the stunning Norman Cathedral serving as a central hub. The Peterborough festival has been conceived and organised by volunteers with a passion for the city and its artists. The team is led by Festival Manager Phil Lewis, whose aim has always been to bring the community together. “Peterborough is home to such a vibrant variety of people. We want to raise as much as we can, but the primary effort is on ensuring everyone who attends has an unforgettable experience. The target audience is people, pure and simple,” says Phil. It all kicks off with a launch party at The Brewery Tap, Westgate on Friday October 20, with an electric performance from Peterborough favourites, The Motor City Vipers with support from the Buzz Rats from 7pm – late. Tickets are £10 per person from the venue or the Oxjam website. On Saturday October 21 it’s The Community Jam, a more family-orientated day, in the grounds of the Cathedral from

10am. Acts performing on the day include singer/songwriter Kerry Devine, funk band The Wise Naïve and video DJs The Video Geeks as well as community choirs, molly dancers, musical ensembles and even a ukulele orchestra! Entry to the Saturday session will be by wristband and wearers can take advantage of special discounts from many local bars, businesses and restaurants including the Argo Lounge, Carluccio's, Puzzles? and Back to Life. Musical performances will also be taking place on the day in both John Lewis and Beales and local bar Puzzles? on Bridge Street will be hosting their own entertainment under the Oxjam banner for festival goers wanting to party into the night. The festival closes in style on Sunday October 22 with a gig at the Met Lounge from 7pm. Local bands and solo artists will be performing and tickets can be bought in advance from the website or on the door. There’s more good news from Peterborough band Idolising Nova who’s new single Don't Blame Me is out on Monday October 9 available on iTunes, Spotify and everywhere else. It's hard to believe that they've only been together as a 3-piece for 12 months. They tell us they’ve achieved things in that time that they're really proud of, but promise they’re only just getting started! It won't be too long before they'll be releasing more new stuff having spent the past month or two writing and recording some new music. Jack from the band told ESP – “We had a great summer and played some awesome shows. We played our first London headline gig at a packed 229 The Venue which was really fun. A few weeks before that we were invited to play a show at The BBC Club at Broadcasting House, exclusive to BBC staff. That was a special night for us and we had some great feedback from that show and made some good contacts. “It was great to play at Deepings Beer Festival for the second year in a row - we headlined the Saturday. It rained all night, but we still had a great time and appreciated everyone staying out in the rain to watch our set. The weather didn't seem to stop everyone from singing and dancing!” The guys are planning some more live shows, possibly another tour towards the end of the year which will definitely include a hometown show. “We have something really cool lined up in Peterborough in November, but we can't say what yet – but we're excited for that!” And so are we…

It's good to have a few nerves especially with something you're passionate about, but mostly I'm just excited.”

Rob Bull is a prominent musician on the local circuit fronting one of ESP’s favourite covers bands, Children of the Revolution. Now Rob is set to launch his own original tracks on his Ghosts on the Horizon EP. It has a country rock vibe and with Rob’s vocal talents it’s sounding great. He’ll be launching the EP at a gig at Mama Liz’s in Stamford on Friday October 6 – aptly supporting his COTR bandmate Dave Smith and his band Austin Gold (see our interview on P.47). We grilled Rob on his new venture… ESP – Everyone knows you for belting out some amazing covers with Children of the Revolution, so what can we expect from your original material? Rob – “Well anyone that's seen Rev over the last year will no doubt have seen me dropping a few country covers into the set, and this is where I've headed with the solo EP, it's influenced heavily by several modern country artists but still with an element of my rock background, I've kept Bruce Springsteen in mind pretty much throughout, he treads that country/rock line to perfection.” What's the inspiration for the EP and are you nervous about it? “It's just something I've wanted to do for years. Writing and releasing your own music is such a difficult thing to

What's made you decide to push your own stuff at this time? “I’ve been in original bands for the last 14 years with Dave (from Austin Gold) we were in Acer for a long time before forming Fallen Breaks and releasing an EP and an album. Fallen Breaks is still a band, but we are dormant at the moment with the Gold boys doing so well. I think in a way this has created a need for me to have an original outlet. I'm really passionate about these songs, there's a lot of heart and truth in them and I am eager to release them and perform them live.” What's your future ambition music wise? “The grand plan is to play the Country to Country festival at the O2 either next year or the year after, I've attended the last three festivals and it's my goal to get billed at C2C as an artist. I'm also spending eight weeks in America next year and have some solo dates lined up in LA and San Diego, I'm hoping to get some more and finally fulfil my dream of playing Vegas and maybe even Nashville.” Your bandmate Dave Smith's doing well with Austin Gold, what's it going to be like both playing on the same bill at Mama Liz's on October 6, but with your own material instead of as COTR? “They're doing great and I'm a big Austin Gold fan, I was there in the early days when they were called Red Wine Blues! This is possibly the first show where we are billed in different original bands, it may be a little strange, but I will hazard a guess that we may collaborate on a song or two on the night, either way it's going to be a great show.”

Phil Lynott of Irish rock legends Thin Lizzy would’ve been 68 this year and for the 14th year running in Peterborough we will be remembering and celebrating the man and the music. Due to public demand the annual 'Dedication' show, which was only meant to be a one off gesture back in 2003, is back at Peterborough Sports and Leisure Club on Lincoln Road, Peterborough on Saturday October 28. The line up this year is really something special. This year’s headliners will be Black Rose (Society) from Northampton who wrote themselves into 'Dedication' folklore 11 years ago, (for those of you who can remember show 4, the 20th Anniversary Show 2006 at The Cresset), when they played the whole of the last Thin Lizzy studio album from 1983 Thunder and Lightning in its entirety plus a greatest hits set, and promise again something really special for this year’s show playing a full 90 minute set. We also have Peterborough’s own Thin Lizzy tribute band Lizzy on The Loose who will sadly be playing their final performance having been the backbone of countless 'Dedication' shows over the past 13 years in this and various line ups. Special guests Fired Up, classic rock covers band are making their long awaited debut and opening the show will be rock covers band, Third Stone From The Sun, back by popular demand, featuring the awesome talent of Charlie Scott on guitar. All proceeds from the show will again go to Roisin Dubh Trust and it’s hoped Phil Lynott's mother Philomena Lynott will be making another special appearance.
