Season5 Platform8 - A Festival of Theatre for Peterborough Platform8, Peterborough’s theatre festival, has shown the city how there’s more to shows than sitting in the dark watching men in tights tell stories from a hundred years ago! Over the past two years Platform8 has staged exciting performances across the city, from boxing clubs to bonfire parties.

Ground Control

T

here will definitely be some early fireworks for Platform8 when Luke Wright returns to The Key Theatre with Frankie Vah on Wednesday October 18. Luke was last in the city in July, compering for John Cooper Clarke’s summer tour, where he showed exactly why JCC has adopted him as his stagecomrade. Fast, visceral, unashamedly controversial and political, Luke Wright has a swagger and energy which is more like a rock

star than a poet – think Mick Jagger with verse. And Frankie Vah is the perfect show for him – set during Thatcher’s 80s, Luke Wright plays an idealistic Essex lad who’s full of discontent and anger but also desperate for something to believe in. We follow his overnight fame, young love and shattered dreams in a visceral performance that burns with love, loss and belief, against a backdrop of late-night indie gigs and 80’s politics. Using archive film-footage and music to punctuate the story Frankie Vah will take you back in time to the social and political discontent of the 1980’s – and question as to how far we’ve really come? The excitement isn’t just for the grown-ups, in fact it’s No Adults Allowed when Non Zero One take over the Town Hall with Ground Control. In this fun

and active show 7-11 year olds become mission control for astronauts, leading them to create a new civilisation on a distant planet. This is a great show for any kids excited by the Tim Peake capsule – but hurry as tickets are limited to only 40 per show, and they’re going fast. For more information about the other shows and events in the autumn season of Platform8 and booking go to the Jumped Up Theatre website, or call The Key Theatre box-office on 01733 207239.

A ‘wicked’ week of fun with Vivacity

Fifth Diwali Festival Set to Light Up City Peterborough has become a city of festivals and one that always brightens up the city in a celebration of light is the autumn Diwali Festival. It returns for the fifth year in Cathedral Square on Saturday October 27 from 11am – 5pm. The Peterborough Diwali Festival is supported by Peterborough City Council and features Indian classical dances, Bollywood dances and stalls selling Indian food, sweets, clothes and handicrafts. Deepavali Festival or Diwali as it’s popularly known is an important festival celebrated all over the world by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Nepalese and the Hindu Sri Lankans and Malaysians but has become a global celebration. The festival organisers told ESP – “The name literally means rows of lights. In Hinduism darkness represents ignorance, and the radiance of light is indicative of truth, divinity and knowledge. Therefore, the ritual of lighting of lamps symbolises the disappearance of all negative energies, leading to happiness and prosperity. During Diwali people give expression to their happiness by lighting lamps, decorating their homes, bursting firecrackers , inviting near and dear ones to their homes and feasting on a variety of sweets.” To commemorate 900 years of the Peterborough Cathedral, the Peterborough Diwali Festival Committee will be distributing 900 battery operated multicoloured tea lights to all the visitors. It’s a free festival so just head down to the city centre and enjoy this great colourful festival of light.

They’ll get to delve into young explorer storytelling, meet historic monks and create their own masterpiece. There’s also a chance to encounter mermaids and pooflinging beasts! The creative types should head to Vivacity libraries where there’ll be craft and storytelling sessions. Explore the tale of ‘Whatever Next! To the moon and back with Baby Bear’ or try a picnic on the moon and make a cardboard box rocket – get the kids to take along a teddy to try it for size. As it’s Halloween why not treat the family to a spooky show at the Key Theatre – there’s Snow White and The Seven Ghouls or You’ve Got Dragons plus, keep an eye out for Vivacity’s family films that will be showing throughout half term. Peterborough Museum

Ghost Walks The Peterborough Museum Ghost Walk has become my Halloween tradition. I’ve attended the popular event during the last four years on behalf of ESP Magazine – with this year being no exception.

H

aving attended the walk so many times, you’re probably thinking I must know the ghost stories insideout, but that’s not the case. In fact, this year over half the spooky tales were completely new to me.

What I admire most about the team from Vivacity who put these spooktacular walks together is that they put a lot of work into researching the stories before passing them our way. Upon receiving numerous reports of similar sightings, they’ll then look into the history of the places being haunted to make sure that the facts all add up – ensuring the information we receive is as accurate as possible. I’m not surprised this year’s ghost walk was full of new stories – not when I think about our great city’s history. Peterborough began as a Saxon settlement around 655. It’s seen many lives lost in that time and it would seem that many of those spirits refuse to leave. You may have heard that Peterborough museum is haunted by the ghost of Thomas Hunter, a World War One soldier who died from battle wounds whilst being treated in the building when it was a hospital back in 1916. Sightings of Hunter began almost instantly. The nurse who’d been treating him was the first to see his spirit lurking in the halls and there have been many reports since by both staff and visitors.

Next time you’re passing Peterborough Cathedral during the evening, look out for candlelight coming from inside one of the windows. There have also been numerous reports of this coming from the upper floors of the west front of the cathedral. It’s said to be the light of a spectral stone mason who’s believed to have been working on building the cathedral during the night, when his candle went out causing him to fall to his death. And did you know that spooky goings on in Peterborough provided the inspiration for Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles?

The guides often have a way of painting a real picture as they’re telling their stories...

Mikey Clarke

10 www.espmag.co.uk

These are just a few of the many stories you’ll hear about whilst participating in the numerous Ghost Walks. The guides often have a way of painting a real picture as they’re telling their stories, literally sending shivers down my spine. The suspense is multiplied whilst doing one of the walks around Halloween time. I highly recommend you give one of the many Halloween Ghost Walks a go. For obvious reasons, the tours (including the Museum Candlelit Ghost Tour) are particularly popular around Halloween so you’ll need to book. To do so, call 01733 864663 or email museum@vivacity-peterborough.com.

Serpentine Green The popular Hampton hangout will be home to a whole bunch of BIG Halloween treats (no tricks, we promise!) on Friday October 26. Firstly, kids can join at the scare fest ‘make and take’ station where they can make their own spooky puppets or Halloween masks all ready for Halloween. There’s Howling Halloween dance offs all day too! On top of that, boys and ghouls can get their faces painted (transforming little shoppers

Tallington Lakes If you’re looking for something a little different this Halloween, how about a Fancy Dress Stand Up Paddle Board Tour of Stamford’s Tallington Lakes?! The ‘Skellytour’ is happening Saturday November 3 at 6pm. Don’t worry, the fancy dress is optional, but it’s recommended to get you into the ‘spirit’ – plus there’ll be a best dressed competition. The whole family is welcome. Because of the time of year with the temperature dropping, you will all have to wear a wetsuit and a buoyancy aid as normal. With the sun gone to sleep by the time you’ll hit the water, a waterproof torch (ideally a head torch) would be a good idea too. It’s £5 entry fee plus £5 to hire. To book and for all terms and conditions, please phone The Proshop on 01778 381154. Limited spaces are available.

Queensgate Before setting off on your Ghost Tour, Queensgate has pumpkin else spooky for you to do. This October half term, the shopping centre’s Central Square will be transformed into a ‘spooktacular’ Pumpkin Patch play park - wicked fun for the whole family. On Wednesday October 31, shoppers’ mini monsters can enjoy eerily exciting storytelling from Pumpkin Pat and Pumpkin Pete then weave through the Pumpkin Patch and learn the bone-rattling Skeleton Shake-down dance. Pimp up a pumpkin with everything from glitter to stickers, paint and googly eyes, ready to take home and put on the doorstep, all completely free! Plus, mums, dads, nans and granddads, it’s your turn to learn. Get inspired by amazing pumpkin carving demonstrations, learn techniques and get ideas that will make neighbours ghastly green with envy. Laura Chandler, Marketing Manager at Queensgate Shopping Centre said, “Halloween gets bigger each year, and this is a fun way to get creative & imaginative with the little ones.” Full details of what’s on at Queensgate can be found here www.queensgateshopping.co.uk/whats-on.

Led by a costumed ghostly expert, the guided tours through creepy cellars and centuries-old cloisters take in some of the less visited areas of Burghley, on the edge of Stamford. Designed to be scary but fun, the tours reveal Burghley’s ghostly goings-on across the centuries and promise plenty of history, as well as scares, during the 50minute flickering torchlight trails. Often an early sell-out, tickets are now on sale for Burghley's Spooky Tours (October 17-31) - with slots at 6.30pm, 7.30pm, 8.30pm and 9.30pm daily (excluding Sundays). The later the tour, the scarier the stories! Local expert Martin Tempest - complete with swirling cape and torch lantern - will once again lead the tours, offering visitors scary snippets and tales of times past at this magnificent Elizabethan mansion. Places are limited, so book early. For a taste of what’s on offer, check out the video on Burghley’s website, but be warned – the screams are real! Although only recommended for children aged 12 and above, Burghley leave it up to parents to decide. Tickets: £18 each, available online only www.burghley.co.uk/events /spooky-tours/.

into witches, wizards, goblins and werewolves) and if that’s not enough, there’s pumpkin hunting all around the stores, where little witches and wizards will be set the task of searching for the hidden pumpkins in the shop windows around the shopping centre in return for some sweet treats!

Spooky Tours at Burghley House We’re fortunate enough to be surrounded by some great historic buildings and if horror movies have taught me anything, it’s that the older the place is, the more ghosts are lurking within it. Spooky torch lit tours of one of England’s grandest Elizabethan houses return this month with even more scary stories and haunting hidden history.

For autumn family fun with fewer scares - and more daylight - head to the Sculpture Garden and have a go at the Burghley Halloween Trail (Saturday October 20 Sunday October 28). Tread through the crispy autumn leaves and find the hidden spooks to receive a treat (free with a House and Gardens or Gardens only ticket, Friends of Burghley or Annual Pass). Stamford Ghost Walks It turns out the Ghosts of Stamford aren’t just confined within the walls of Burghley House. The town’s full of creepy tales, which you can discover during the fun and informative walk. Visit www.stamfordartscentre .com for full details.

Halcyon Halloween Peterborough’s recently refurbished Halcyon pub in Netherton has also gone all out this Halloween. On Friday October 26 from 8.30pm there’s SPOOKYoke (with prizes for the best dressed!). A fancy dress disco on the Saturday and a Family Fun Day on the Sunday – with games, prizes, tombola and cakes! We highly recommend the newly refurbished pub in Netherton.

fter all the excitement of Tim Peake’s Soyuz spacecraft touching down in Peterborough Cathedral, the hugely successful exhibition which has attracted thousands gets another boost this month with an event we’re equally excited about. Now the capsule will be nestled below a stunning illuminated moon suspended from the ceiling creating an out-of-this-world experience! Vivacity has worked with the Without Walls ATN programme to present Museum of the Moon by Luke Jerram from October 5 – 14, and we can’t wait to finally see it. With detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface and cinematic surround sound, it'll be hard not to believe you’re floating through space or standing beneath the real thing. Museum of the Moon will open with a bang on Friday October 5, featuring a special evening performance of Sufi:Zen by Akademi in the Cathedral grounds. With the dramatic backdrop of the Cathedral's gothic architecture, the night sky will come alive with movement, 12 www.espmag.co.uk

We’re very excited to be bringing this to Peterborough and present it in the beautiful setting of the Cathedral. It’s going to be a magical experience for all ages.” During its time in Peterborough Cathedral, there’ll be a programme of supporting events (listed on this page) including music under the moon, a silent disco and special late night openings to experience the full beauty of the moon after dark. Museum of the Moon continues until October 14 with a programme of lunar inspired events. To find out more visit www.vivacity.org/moon.

H

is Wansford eatery is an absolute delight and if I’m honest, I’m embarrassed it’s taken me years rather than months to make a repeat visit. The Paper Mills has always had a solid reputation but when you’re on top you’ve got to work harder to stay there. With this in mind I was slightly sceptical in assuming the food

CIAOS OUT

was going to be as good as it was at my last visit. But within ten minutes of being seated my faith was properly restored. I’m actually salivating at the thought of what I ate just by typing this! I’d had a late Friday night with a few too many shandies, so my lunch sitting was essentially breakfast. I was hoping there’d be something on the menu that would be an acceptable breakfast option and there was. Jumping out from the menu card was: Brunch Stack – sauteed potatoes and shallots, black pudding, grilled tender-stem broccoli, grilled bacon, fried egg and salad garnish. Seriously, I thought I’d died and gone to food porn heaven. The feeling I liken it to when it arrived at my table was (and motorcycle owners will get this) like being the proud owner of a Ducati 916. A bike like that should be ridden, you should get evil with it and wring its neck in every gear but in reality you just want to park it in your living room and stare at is beautifulness for hours. That’s what the Brunch Stack was – it was a thing of beauty and exquisitely presented. It was a shame to cut into it but food reviews are a tough job and someone has to do it. The problem I had now was pacing myself. I wanted to destroy it in minutes but that would’ve just been a waste. Instead, I decided to be cultured and attempt to chat up one of the waitresses in between mouthfuls, but she was far too professional to succumb to my 1980’s quips. So, I proceeded to devour every bite and damn it was good. Everything on the plate was cooked to perfection and the black pudding must have come from a royal pig or something because it was the best I’ve ever tasted. Even the salad was garnished just the way I like it. There was just enough olive oil in it to glissen but not too much where you need armbands tied to your fork to navigate your way through the rest of the dish.

Garnishing a salad is a tricky business. Most restaurants don’t, they just serve up a plate of something resembling dead weeds, so top marks to The Paper Mills for doing a proper job. Another point worth making is that the food was hot. Again, if I had a penny for the number of lukewarm meals I’ve been served in restaurants I’d be able to buy Posh by now (yes Steve I’d keep you as manager). Once I’d politely left a fork full of potatoes and a couple of slithers of red onion, assistant manager Matt asked me the dreaded question: “Would you like to see the dessert menu?” It’s a

A quick shout to my former Posh colleague Tony Broughton who’s joined the behind the scenes team at Peterborough Sports Football Club. The Turbines (club nickname) are currently, as I write, joint top of the Southern League Division 1 East and long may their good start to the season continue. For those of us who don’t know, Peterborough Sports was formed as Brotherhoods Engineering Works in 1919 playing initially in the Northants League, which they won at the first attempt. They play at the Bee Lets Stadium at the P.S.L club at Lincoln Road in New England and get an average crowd of just under 200 a game. Neighbours Bedford Town, Corby Town and Cambridge City are also expected to be frontrunners for the league as the season unfolds – and the local derby with Yaxley is one not to be missed. Like all football teams, sponsorship is key to making improvements on and off the field – and sponsoring a game with the match ball for just £145 for up to 10 guests sounds pretty good value to me. For more details and matchday admission prices, go to www.pslfc.com. Good luck for the rest of the season lads.

It’s got to be my favourite night of the year, so much so, that I’ve forgotten what it’s really all about: sweets, more b****y sweets, kids that kick the door if you don’t open it, yummy mummys, pound shop costumes, cute kids you give Cadbury’s to, brats you give stale dods to, tricks you never actually see, eggs thrown at your window, kids that stand there for a trough of sweets when a handful isn’t enough and fireworks thrown in for good measure.

bit like asking me if I’d like to go on a date with Anne Hathaway. Of course the answer was yes, but as soon as I saw the menu I had a problem. My issue was that all the desserts are homemade and that usually means they’re all going to be absolutely delicious. Like a spoilt child I was dithering between two choices and then embarrassingly under my breath I said: “Can I have two please?” Matt didn’t know where to look but he and his team couldn’t be more helpful. They brought out Hot Chocolate Crème Brulee with Almond Biscotti and Chocolate Orange Torte with Blood Orange Sorbet. Both were one word: stunning. The crème brulee is served flambé style to heat the layer of sugar coating. Again, to be polite I pretended I couldn’t finish them both but if they were in front of me now I’d sell my mother to get at them both. Every dessert was just £5 and I’ll tell you now, you’ll be hard pushed to get a dessert that good at that price anywhere else. The Paper Mills is undoubtedly a top of the table winner and if any ladies would like me to take them for dinner, I’ll be going back in a flash. If you haven’t booked Christmas dinner yet, then surely a very reasonable £75 for five courses on Christmas Day is tempting? And New Year’s Eve is even better. As a thank you from Steve to all his loyal customers The Paper Mills is putting on a buffet and a drink for just £5. There’s only one thing I can say to that: Up The Paper Mills!

HALLOWEEN

Please Aldo, Can We Have Some More? For the second year running celebrity chef Aldo Zilli was the special guest at the city’s Italian Festival and he’s already talking of returning for a third time. Aldo prepared and cooked arancini balls and fresh pasta before passing out bowls of his tasty dishes to the watching crowds. He was so impressed with the festival as a visitor last year that he wanted to return and cook for both days this year, which he duly did. The festival is by my reckoning the longest running Italian celebration in the UK and we’ve been lucky to enjoy it for 10 successive years. I spoke to visitors who travelled from as far as Manchester and London to be here and they’ll be back next year when it promises to be even bigger and better.

Get a Boombox for Cassette Day So, most of us know about the annual Record Store Day, but did you know there’s a Cassette Store Day too? Hoping to do the same for the humble cassette that Record Store Day has done for vinyl, cassette sales are increasing – even if they’re not at the same level as the 12” LP. Cassette Store Day is Saturday October 13, worldwide. And if you need a cassette player to sit alongside your turntable, checkout some of the old skool boomboxes The Nostalgia Lounge is selling. These are genuine ghettoblasters from the 1980s and 90s and they’re becoming collectable just like most things from that retro era. There’s also a varied collection of cassettes on sale and a good stack of vinyl too. Visit the shop at 54 Second Drove Industrial Estate in Fengate or check out The Nostalgia Lounge on Facebook and ebay.

Marco For Pride Of Britain? At the time of writing this, fundraiser supremo Marco Sementa has been nominated for the Pride of Britain Awards for his dedication to charity work. He’s been shortlisted in the final four to represent Cambridgeshire, so watch this space for an update. Marco has literally raised thousands of pounds over the years but more recently his charity football matches have earned charities more than £17,000. I can’t think of anyone who’s worthy of more praise than Marco and fingers crossed he’ll get the national recognition his dedication and commitment deserves.

He brings with him 27 years of experience in the industry and told ESP he’s looking forward to developing the food offer across all the different catering aspects of The Cresset. “The Fayre Spot has just had a £250k refurbishment and looks fantastic so it’s a great opportunity to refresh the menus and try new things. “Conference and banqueting is a big part of the business, we can cater for hundreds of guests in a day, so it’s exciting to be working on new menus and ideas with the team to try and offer something new for our guests. “It’s a really interesting place to work, and I’m really enjoying the diversity of the role, from catering for the elderly persons day centre, to delivering wedding breakfasts and pre-show supper meals for theatre audiences, every day is different. “Overall I’m really excited to be giving The Cresset an identity, and putting my own stamp on the food.” So what can we expect from the new menu when it launches this month? “Some of the traditional pub favourites of course,” says Jon, “including hand battered fish & chips and a really good homemade lasagne, as well as some great grill dishes and interesting lunch options. “We’ll be doing as much as we can fresh, we’re cooking our own ham, working with local suppliers to get fantastic quality ingredients, and trying to offer something a bit different to the usual pub chains. “Plus some new dishes, including belly of pork, lamb shank, and pasta with meatballs. Look out for The Fayre Spot Burger!” And if you happen to hear some rock ‘n’ roll coming from the kitchen it’ll just be Jon’s favourite cooking playlist… “I’m a massive Elvis fan – much to my wife’s disgust, but the King always provides the best soundtrack!”

TIME TO SUPPORT THE RUNNERS TAKING THE PGER CHALLENGE Two members of the ESP team are limbering up for this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run in Peterborough and it’ll be a challenge of a different kind for both of them.

“” This year I'll be attempting to complete the PGER with a 45lb pack on my back...

O

ur photographer Chris Brudenell has proved he’s a real superhero having shed 4 ½ st since running the Anna’s Hope Fun Run last year dressed as Batman and is now set to tackle the half marathon for the very first time. Meanwhile our resident ‘action man’ Darren Grigas may be well known for taking on serious challenges and has completed the PGER several times so he’s ramping things up to make sure he’s suffering just as much as Chris! “This year I'll be attempting to complete the PGER with a 45lb pack on my back, and despite the extra three-and-a-bit stone, I'll be aiming to cross the finish line in under two hours. It's going to be really tough to hold that pace, so forgive me if I'm grimacing and growling as I pass, I'll truly appreciate any extra cheers to keep me going, (it really does help!).

“This silly stunt is one in a series of challenges in an effort to raise life-changing funds and awareness for Anna's Hope. All support really does make a difference, so thank you all!” Darren’s using the PGER as part of his prep for his latest series of brave (ridiculously hard!) challenges which he’s just begun and you can support him on https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ challenge-grigas. Meanwhile Chris is one of many who’s stepped out of his comfort zone and used this great local event as a goal to improve his health and lifestyle and has lost 7 ½ st in total since starting his health kick. He’s even lucky enough to be wearing race number 1978 – which just happens to be the year of his birthday, so clearly it was all meant to be! Once again he’ll be dressed as Batman with his running pal Carly as Robin and says he can’t wait to finally achieve his goal. “I started running to lose weight but now it’s turned into something more, to see how far I can push my body because I spent 39 years sitting on my bum never challenging myself. I never thought in a million years I’d run at all let alone a half marathon. “This will be my biggest ever physical challenge I’ve ever undertaken. I’ve never pushed my body to these lengths before. Sure my legs moan and groan at me but the sense of achievement and elation every time I finish a run makes me go back for more! The half marathon represents the end of ‘project 40’ and what has also been one of the most remarkable years of my whole life. If you see us, shout at the top of your voice – ‘GO BATMAN AND ROBIN’! “The crowds last year were fantastic, cheering us all the way round. Lots of smiles and high fives!” We’ll be cheering on Chris and Darren on the day but hope everyone will get out there either at the Embankment or along the route to support the thousands of runners taking part, many of whom are pushing their boundaries and raising cash for some very worthy causes.

The PGER is on Sunday October 14 and the deadline for entries is 12 noon on October 12. The last free training session at the Embankment is on October 3. To enter or find out more head to www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk. Whether you’re doing the Anna’s Hope Fun Run or the half marathon – go for it and good luck! We’ll have full coverage online and in the next issue of ESP.

STREETS BOOK IS PICTURE PERFECT Every picture tells a story but none more so than the excellent street photography of Peterborough paramedic Chris Porsz.

W

e at ESP have been massive fans of his work for years and I’ve raved about Chris in my own Man About Town column many a time. His work seems to get better with each passing year and Chris has assembled another vivid collection of photos for his latest book Streets of Britain. The book’s due for release late October / early November but Chris gave me a sneak preview of some of the pages, which feature 24 cities including our very own city of Peterborough of course.

In his foreword he explains: “Naturally my hometown of Peterborough is well covered as I always carry my camera just in case. No disrespect to Coventry and Bradford but after eight hours of walking on quiet, hot and harsh sunlit streets I took not one image. By stark contrast a wet, cloudy and packed Skegness was inspirational and, just like the hedonistic streets of Brighton, a photographer’s paradise. So much so I went back several times for more.

Naturally my hometown of Peterborough is well covered as I always carry my camera just in case.

“In Belfast it was strange to take pictures on the Falls and Shankill Roads as the images I recall seeing in the 70s were of a war zone. The only hazards I have faced were being caught in a hail of missiles lobbed by Millwall football fans, or hassle from over-keen security guards and a general suspicion by the public of big cameras but not smartphones. “I absorbed the bear hug and kisses of a drunken Glaswegian but decided to leg it after two menacing men demanded my camera. A more pleasurable chance encounter was in Hull when I did a double-take to confirm it was Neil the flute player who previously lived in Peterborough and featured in my book Reunions.” 22 www.espmag.co.uk

This book would make an ideal Christmas present for photography aficionados out there. It will be available from the Visitors Information Centre on Bridge Street or you can message Chris on Facebook or through his website. He will also be having some book stalls at Peterborough City Hospital in November and December we’ll keep you posted about and he’ll be at the Vivacity shop in Queensgate on November 16 and 17. www.chrisporsz.com. Congratulations to Peterborough's newest graduates! Hundreds of students from University Centre Peterborough celebrated their graduation in the historic Peterborough Cathedral on Thursday September 20. ESP Magazine caught up with the excitement and celebrations at The Bull Hotel in Peterborough as the graduates were preparing for the ceremony by getting gowned for the big occasion. Once gowned, a formal ceremony in the evening was led by Deputy Mayor of Peterborough Cllr John Fox as students and academic staff processed from The Bull Hotel to the Cathedral which was packed with family and friends of the students. Students from University Centre Peterborough have graduated from a variety of degree programmes including Accounting, Bioscience, Computing, Criminology, English Literature, Performing Arts, Sociology and Sports Coaching. Many of the graduates have already secured full-time work in their chosen careers and will remain and work in the area. This is aided by students gaining work placements and experience while studying which benefits local businesses by securing the best graduates from the region. A special award was presented on the evening to Sharon Boswell who graduated after studying a BA (Hons) Sports Coaching and Physical Education degree. Sharon received 'The Vice Chancellor’s Leader Award' which was presented by Anglia Ruskin University in recognition of her contribution to the community. Just six awards are available each year out of all the students who study at Anglia Ruskin University and University Centre Peterborough.

paparazzi Caught in the act? 41st Beer Fest Success

As it starts to turn chilly it’s nice to reflect on the good times of the summer and the CAMRA Peterborough Beer Festival always rounds things up in style. Over 26,000 of us supped over 77,000 pints of beer, 14,000 pints of cider, 5,500 bottles from the World Beer Bar and an incredible 350 bottles of gin from the PBF Gin Bar. And yes… the ESP team assisted with those figures! There was some fantastic live music, a great atmosphere as usual and our photographer Mike Harris was there to capture you all having an amazing time. Finally, the biggest thank you must go to the incredible PBF volunteer staff that spent up to 18 days building, operating and taking down the site often working more than 16 hour days and, of course, to the bar staff for serving us during the festival. Next year’s 42nd Peterborough Beer Festival organised by the local team from CAMRA will take place from August 20 - 24 so book your hols around that and we’ll see you there! paparazzi 10th Italian Festival

The city’s annual Italian Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary in style with special guest celebrity chef Aldo Zilli making a welcome return for the whole weekend. The event in Cathedral Square was buzzing with a Mediterranean vibe, delicious food, Italian singers, music and dancing and our guy behind the lens was Chris Brudenell. Annette Joyce, Peterborough City Council's Service Director – Environment and Economy, told ESP – "The festival showcased four generations of Peterborough's Italian community and attracted visitors from all over the region. "It was great to see all of our communities enjoying the event and gathering on Cathedral Square in the sunshine. "Aldo Zilli was once again impressed by how the city embraced him and his delicious cooking. He fed dozens of people and everyone left with their bellies full and a smile on their face." Tom Hardy stars as the fan favourite headlining anti-hero character from Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. First it was meant be a more violent R-rated thriller based on the cult Spidey nemesis – who can flit between being good and bad – but apparently it’s now been toned down a notch to be more family friendly, and may eventually tie into the world of Tom Holland’s webslinger. Following a scandal, journalist Eddie Brock (Hardy) attempts to revive his career by investigating the Life Foundation – led by Riz Ahmed’s (Nightcrawler) shady inventor Carlton Drake – but instead comes into contact with an alien symbiote that bonds with Brock, and gives him otherworldly superpowers.

DESTINY 2: FORSAKEN (PS4/X1/PC)

Acclaimed developers Bungie haven’t rested on their laurels – to provide easily the most comprehensive expansion yet. After admitting to some of the deficiencies that hampered last year’s launch of Destiny 2, this package – complete with an impressive ##### Cayde-6 death-led story, jaw-dropping new locales headlined by the Dreaming City, exciting new multiplayer modes like Gambit, and all the previous DLC content – rights a lot of wrongs that should entice naysayers to give the franchise another go, and be heaven to fanboys. Life has just been breathed back into your Guardian – as a new destiny awaits.

NBA 2K19 (X1/PS4/NSW/PC) How do you improve the pound-for-pound best sports game on the market? By simply honing an already tried-and-tested formula. 2K still comfortably holds off ever-improving competition in the form of EA’s NBA Live with its core gameplay being as sensational as ever – along with impressive presentation, ##### animations and story modes that have evolved since last year. There’s the odd bug in there – and the microtransactions are completely unnecessary – but from a distance it hits Steph Curry-style from downtown, and if you get up close it still smashes home a powerful LeBron James-inspired slam dunk.

ESP’s columnist Phil adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

Godden is a Good ’un! Jack followed a long line of hugely successful strikers at the ABAX Stadium with Britt Assombalonga, Dwight Gayle, Craig Mackail-Smith and Aaron Mclean to name a few. Finding those kind of players is proving tougher and tougher, but already, one of the summer recruits has hit the ground running in the challenge to join that aforementioned elite club. Matt Godden is slightly different to the others though. He’s dipped into non-league and worked his way back up via Stevenage and in mid-September had netted eight goals, two more than Marriott managed at that time a year previous. Of course, that record doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to surpass Marriott, nor should it put any pressure on him either. Godden is someone that takes everything in his stride. He’s a grounded individual and knows that football can change in a second. “I am not getting carried away, far from it,” he told me. “It has been a good start both individually and as a team, but that is all that it is, a start. I knew that when I signed for the football club in the summer that the team would create chances and it is down to me to put them in the back of the net. I have been pleased with my return, but I am not resting on my laurels.

“As a striker you can go through barren patches in front of goal. You have to stay relaxed. It is more frustrating if the chances are not being created. I know that won’t be a problem here. We have a lot of talented players who can create opportunities out of nothing. “I have had a good early season partnership with Jason Cummings. It is strange, it is not something we necessarily work on in training, but we seem to have developed an understanding and we get on off the pitch which I think also helps. Some of the best strike partnerships in football come naturally rather than being worked on day in, day out,” Godden said. In fact, Godden is someone who’s planning for the future. While at nonleague side Ebbsfleet, Godden trained to become a Mortgage Advisor and is one exam away from being qualified. He knows that life after football is something that needs to be prepared for. “When in non-league, you do have to think about the future because you can drop out of the game easily. I have worked my way back into the Football League but that doesn’t mean I am neglecting the future. It is something I have always been interested in and I am one exam away from completing the requirements. However, right now my focus is on scoring goals and helping Peterborough getting into the Championship.

“The manager is hugely ambitious and I love that as a player. He gets the best out of me. I joined the club because I wanted to play as high as I can and I believe Peterborough can help me achieve my aspirations.”

It’s Halloween – tIme to vamp up your makeup! It’s that time of year again! You can go knocking on the front doors of the people of Peterborough in a scary outfit and demand chocolate! It’s better if you go with children though, I’ve discovered! But if trick or treating isn’t your scene, there are plenty of places to go on a night out, or even host your own party at home! But to stand out from the crowd, you’ll need some great makeup to win any of those fancy dress competitions. And the bolder the better! So, what are your options… 1. Fancy Dress Shops – they sell some great theatre makeup sets, tattoos, face paints and transfers so you can literally transform yourself. We recommend: The Harlequin Party Shop in Fengate. 2. Go to a professional – yes, if you’re not the artistic type, no need to worry. Makeup artists aren’t just booked for weddings and special occasions. ‘Makeup by Eloise’ has a special effect make up option starting from £40, perfect for Halloween. And she is based in Peterborough.

3. Go High Street – yes, even Queensgate can help you to get Halloween ready. Boots have gone all out this year to help support our Halloween obsession. There are suggestions online for all types of Halloween makeup on their web pages, and the professionals on the counter at NYX can help instore for you to pick out the best eye makeup for a great look (check out their amazing ‘cobweb’ eye!)

beauty @ rIver Island In Queensgate If you haven’t been into town for a while, you might not have noticed, but River Island has a brand new home. It’s now on the ground floor of Queensgate, in the old space once occupied by BHS. And it’s amazing! A totally cool layout, and loads of this season’s trends on show. But what you might not know is, it’s another hidden gem for health and beauty fans with great lipsticks costing just a tenner – in all shades, from bright pink, purple to green! – through to eye liners, illuminators and all the fake eyelashes you could want. Plus there are some beautiful makeup bags there too if you feel like giving yourself an extra special treat.

... and the best makeup remover? A top tip from ESP: Try Johnson's Baby Oil. Both gentle on the skin and works miracles to get the tough stuff off. Use a small amount on a cotton ball, then follow up with your favourite anti-aging cream. Remember to Tweet/Facebook ESP with some of your Halloween costumes – we’d love to see them.

sHIne tHIs october This October sees the start of global Spina Bifida awareness month. And here in Peterborough, we are lucky to be the home of Shine, a great charity doing smashing work to raise awareness of Spina Bifida and give specialist support and advice to families across the UK. Spina Bifida literally means ‘split spine’. A fault in the development of the spinal cord and surrounding bones (vertebrae) leaves a gap. I’ve been lucky enough to hear a few education talks form the experts at Shine, and I now know that Folic Acid is vital in the development of a healthy baby, particularly during the very early stages, before you may even know you are pregnant. Research shows that taking a 400mcg Folic Acid supplement before becoming pregnant, and throughout early pregnancy, can help. To find out more, talk to your GP or take a look at the Spine website.

FIVE STEPS TO BRIGHTER SKIN THIS AUTUMN WITH MBE We may have loved the summer heatwave but plenty of sun exposure, good and bad, has probably taken a toll on your skin. If you’re looking in the mirror and feeling like your skin needs a little TLC it could be time to focus on a skin rejuvenation regime. If it’s looking aged/damaged you could look to peel away the damage caused by the harsh summer months to reveal glowing, fresh skin with professional treatments. The team at My Body Essentials (MBE) offer a range of professional peels and also have some great autumn offers.

Step 1: Exfoliate to increase cell turnover The skin cell cycle becomes longer as we age, causing dead skin cells to collect on the top layer of the epidermis and make the skin look dry and rough. Regular exfoliation stimulates new epidermal cell growth, which helps smooth, thicken and strengthen the skin for a younger appearance. To exfoliate your skin, consider a Facial Peel, MBE are offering 40% off an Ormedic Lift Peel - A blend of pumpkin, papaya, pineapple, and mango, this non-chemical peel naturally rebalances, regenerates, and restores your skin using organic ingredients with medical effectiveness.

Step 2: Strengthen the dermal matrix of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid To plump the skin and improve the appearance of fine lines, you must work from the inside out. Use active cosmeceutical products (sometimes referred to as medical grade skin care) to repair and strengthen deep into the dermis. Cosmeceutical products contain active ingredients that stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. To strengthen your dermal layers MBE suggest a Signature Enzyme Retexturing Treatment with 40% off. This results-driven treatment will change the image of your skin in just one session.

40% OFF selected Chemical Peels

Vitamin C, alpha and beta hydroxy acids, and gentle yet effective enzymes speed up cellular turnover lightening, tightening and brightening all skin types, even Rosacea and sensitive skin.

Step 3: Reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and discolouration Treat sun spots, uneven skin tone and other discoloration with exfoliating treatments and cosmeceutical products that contain melanin-inhibiting ingredients. Using these methods simultaneously increases your chance of success. Natural lightening and brightening agents like emblica, liquorice, oyster phoenix mushroom and kojic acid will inhibit the production of melanin.

Step 4: Optimise hydration levels Drink plenty of water. Dry skin shows more pronounced wrinkling and a rougher texture. However, heavy moisturisers are not always the solution. Use the correct ingredients to draw and lock in moisture and improve the skin’s ability to produce its own moisture.

Our range of treatments correct damage, protect and enhance your skin • FREE Consultations • IPL Hair Removal • Skin Rejuvenation • Laser Tattoo Removal • Acne Treatments • Fine Lines & Wrinkles – Radio Frequency • Stretch Marks – Micro Needling • Thread Vein Removal – ThermaVein®

• Lipo Belt Body Sculpting • Skin Tags, Warts, Moles & Verrucae – Cryopen • Professional Strength Skincare Products

Step 5: Protect with broadspectrum SPF 30 sunscreen 365 days a year Sun exposure damages DNA and skin cells over time, reducing the skin’s natural ability to repair itself and negating positive results from skin care. It is critical to protect skin with broad-spectrum sunscreens that provide both UVA and UVB protection. Zinc oxide is currently the most effective sunscreen ingredient due to its ability to physically block UVA and UVB rays and helps protect from environmental damage. For this reason, use sunscreens containing zinc oxide. A March for us Fellas

Prostate cancer has now overtaken breast cancer to become the third biggest cancer killer in the UK, taking one man every 45 minutes. One in eight of us fellas are affected by prostate cancer and this figure is on the rise.

Organiser Camille Rhodes told me: “The event is very relaxed, it is a 2.5k or a 5k walk and there are plenty of benches to take a break or you can even pop into the cafes for a drink. It’s not a timed event, so you can stroll around at your leisure with your family, dog or both!

T

Former Coronation Street star Steven Arnold is set to tackle nine roles in a great new adaptation of KES coming to Stamford Corn Exchange this month. Adapted from the novel, A Kestrel for a Knave, the show tells the story of young Billy Casper, a troubled fifteen-yearold boy determined not to end up working down the pit like his brother Jake. It’s set in the small Yorkshire mining town of Barnsley and tells the heart wrenching story of his life changing bond with a kestrel he trains. Steven and partner Zoe Crowson have formed Psychotastic Productions to stage the show which will donate 25% of profits direct to the Phoebe Research Fund and

I wanted to put Peterborough on the map and my vision is to get a screening program in place to help men and rid the stigma some men have about these kind of health issues.” It’s always good to see local businesses support these causes and Anytime Fitness Peterborough, which has just celebrated its first 6 months in business, has got behind this event. The gym at the Orton Centre is open 24 hours a day which means you can workout at a time to suit you and has got off to a great start. Manager Tom Fletcher is clearly in a good mood and told ESP – “We have given the March For Men event 3 x 6 month memberships to raffle off and a few free Personal Training sessions with one of our fantastic trainers. Steven’s working extremely hard as he’s playing nine characters and with the play being so fast paced it will be challenging.” Zoe tells us she’s been extremely humbled by the support given by over 30 businesses to make the show itself happen and sponsor the souvenir programme. WAITY’S MONSTER CHALLENGES

S

ince getting into ultra-marathons and endurance challenges in recent years, I’ve found one of the greatest rewards from this is seeing how sharing these stories can inspire and motivate more people to take on challenges themselves and push their own perceived limits. In-turn I’m equally inspired by everyone of all levels taking on challenges that push their own comfort zones. Some people may train for months for a marathon, for others, completing their first 3-mile fun run breaking new barriers for them can be a huge accomplishment and perhaps the start of a lifechanging longer journey.

In less than six months, David’s lost an incredible 24kg...

One such inspirational guy is Serpentine Green shopping centre manager, David Wait. Only a few months ago David was in his own words “massively overweight”, he had a busy job, family and all the usual ties that get in the way of

40 www.espmag.co.uk

personal goals for most of us, but something switched in David’s mind and he decided to set himself some truly amazing challenges so big that they would become literally life-changing. In less than six months, David’s lost an incredible 24kg, dropping from a 42” to 34” waist. The weight loss however hasn’t been the primary goal but is more of a by-product of being determined to achieve these goals and training so consistently hard. David’s ultimate goal at the end of this series is to complete the Marathon des Sables in 2019, running 250km, across the Sahara carrying his supplies on his back. But as if that wasn’t enough, he’s got an epic list to get through along the way. David’s list of huge challenges are all selffunded meaning all donations go straight to Disability Peterborough, the amazing charity he’s working hard to help • 5th July 2018 - The National 3 Peaks Challenge COMPLETED • 29th July 2018 - Parachute Jump COMPLETED • 25th August 2018 - 100km South Coast Challenge COMPLETED • 1st October 2018 - Climb Island Peak 21,000ft in the Himalayas • 1st December 2018 - Half Marathon Des Sables - 120Km across the hills/mountains of Peru • 5th January 2019 - Blade Runner - 50km Ultra Marathon over the Brecon Beacons • 3rd February 2019 - 66 Miles - North Downs Pilgrim Challenge • 5th April 2019 - Full Marathon Des Sables 250(ish)km across the Sahara

Catching up with David it’s clear taking on his ‘monster challenges’ has changed his life already. “Unlike people such as yourself who’ve always been fit(ish!) (and skinny) I genuinely am quite lazy and was massively overweight 6 months ago and these challenges have forced me to change some of the bad habits I had (or still have). It’s still not quite perfect but I’m hoping the changes are now for life!” If you’re thinking of doing something that pushes your boundaries I know from experience that having a cause you don’t want to let down really gets you through it and David feels the same – “The charity’s recently lost one of its main funders so any donations go towards ensuring the charity can operate and offer ongoing support and help to anyone within Peterborough who lives with a disability. “I first met Disability Peterborough through hosting an awareness month at Serpentine Green, during this campaign I could see how the charity benefits so many local people. It also made me realise that not everyone knows about the charity so I’m hoping that these challenges not only raise money but help raise awareness of what Disability Peterborough can offer.” David’s now half way through his gruelling challenges but says he has no regrets – “The best has been the parachute jump which ironically was the one that scared me the most. The worst has been spraining the ligaments in my ankles, which happened during the 100km race, that was 6 weeks from completing the 100km to going to Nepal to climb Island Peak so I had to adjust how I trained as I couldn’t do any impact work.”

We’re incredibly proud of and inspired by David’s drive and determination and hope you feel the same. I know from personal experience the difference a donation can make to help you push through the harder times, so please show some support for David and follow the link to support him and Disability Peterborough. www.localgiving.org/fundraising/ waitysmonsterchallenges.

Top 3 Netflix Comedy Specials

Strictly’s back on, the weather’s getting murkier and at the time of writing it’s getting dark at roughly 7.30pm, so it’s safe to say winter is definitely on its way. If you’re planning some cosy nights in this season then you’ll be glad to know this doesn’t necessarily mean cutting out your comedy fix, as luckily Netflix has a fantastic showcase of specials to cater to all tastes:

IAIN STIRLING The voice of Love Island will be performing at the Key Theatre after his sell-out tour ‘U OK HUN? X’ has been extended for the third and final time. This is your last chance to catch Iain Stirling’s brilliant observations of modern millennial life, including dinner party etiquette and the pressures on a generation brought up in a world of instant gratification. Tickets available on 01733 207239.

THE HORNE SECTION Following their hit BBC Radio 4 series and many years of sell-out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and London’s West End, don’t miss everyone’s favourite Dictionary Corner regulars on 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown when they perform at the Key Theatre this month. Expect a heady mix of spontaneous stand-up and spectacular musical talent led by Greg Davies’ personal assistant on Taskmaster, it’s little Alex Horne! Tickets available on 01733 207239.

LIGHTBOX COMEDY CLUB Have a great night out with comedians Patrick Monahan, Michael Fabbri, and compere Paul Revill at this month’s Funhouse Comedy Club at the Lightbox Café on Bridge Street. Tickets are £10 per person and include your first drink! Tickets available on 01733 894444, or in person from The Lightbox Café.

James Acaster: Repertoire This ‘best of’ collection offers four individual shows from Acaster’s past stints in Edinburgh, with each one equally demonstrating why he’s become one of the country’s most critically acclaimed comics. Released in chronological order (making it very easy to binge-watch), this collection offers some outstanding moments of observational comedy and his incredibly catchy Kettering Town FC chant makes this collection an absolute must-see for true comedy fans.

Greg Davies: You Magnificent Beast Best known for presiding as the formidable overlord of Taskmaster, Greg Davies revisits terrifying dates, manscaping disasters, his father's pranks and more in his first savagely funny stand-up special on Netflix. Released in April earlier this year, The Guardian gave the show 4 stars and described it as ‘an evening of exuberant confessional comedy from a manchild with a lot of idiocy to confess’. OCT

Bo Burnham: Make Happy Whenever I have a bad day, this is the comedy special I turn to! After winning an Edinburgh Comedy Award back in 2010 this American comedian has appeared in Hollywood films, published his own poetry, and released two fantastic Netflix comedy specials. Make Happy is his most recent show where he uses musical comedy to lampoon country music, Katy Perry and comedy itself as he applies his unique and ground-breaking comedic stance to the world we live in. 42 www.espmag.co.uk

Team GB at 3 Paralympics to date, the first time being when she was just 15 years-old, and will, surely, lead to nothing less than a podium finish in this year’s Strictly. “I have looked at some of the dances and seen the different styles and the moves,” she says, “and I think the biggest challenge will be getting around certain moves with my arm. I’m not worried about it but I know we’re going to have to think outside the box and perhaps do things differently. But we’ll get around it!” she says confidently.

hilst other athletes will be taking a well earned few weeks off, elite Paratriathlete Lauren, formerly

from Sawtry, flew home from the World Championships a double world champion and changed straight from her trainers into her dancing shoes to deliver an impressive waltz. Missing her lower right arm from birth, Peterborough born Lauren’s disability has always pushed her to be the best she can be and she relishes overcoming obstacles. It’s this determination that’s led to her representing

Pile up the sequins, polish up the glitter ball and turn up the spray tan machine to ‘TOWIE creosote maximum’; autumn’s well and truly here so it’s time, once again, to take to the dance floor as Strictly is back for series 16. And, once again, Peterborough is well represented as local hero Paralympian Lauren Steadman is taking on the cha cha challenge.

With the past successes of fellow local heroes Olympic gymnast Louis Smith and singer Aston Merrygold, not to mention Lance Corporal Cassidy Little in The People’s Strictly, Lauren must surely be feeling the pressure of Peterborough’s expectation, but how far does she think she can go in this year’s competition? “Definitely when I start things I’m in it to be the best that I can be. Whether that takes me all the way to the end, I hope it does, I wouldn’t see the point in coming in and not trying to finish but that is just my attitude. If not, I’d just love to get my dancing to the point where I’m proud of myself, I’ve learnt a new skill, gained a new confidence in an area that I didn’t have before , then I’ll be chuffed.” Partnered with squeaky clean pro dancer AJ, Lauren must surely be in with a great chance. But, no matter whether she jives to Blackpool, salsas into the final or Foxtrots off in the second week, the only thing for sure is that Lauren will give it her all and do us proud. And we’ll be behind her all the way. Read more on www.espmag.co.uk. Sarah Tempest

ar veteran Cassidy from Market Deeping who lost his lower leg in an explosion while on a tour in Afghanistan in 2011, is joining the cast of ITV’s Coronation Street as a mentor to the young amputee Jack Webster. He’ll be appearing in six episodes of the popular series playing Greg, Gary's mate, who’s brought into the school holiday club by Brian because Jack’s upset at being made to feel different since having his leg amputated after suffering from sepsis. Cassidy is well known locally having won The People’s Strictly back in 2015 as well as for his various acting roles, but he told ESP the biggest surprise has been the amount of attention he’s received from his home country of Canada which surprisingly has an army of Corrie fanatics! “I know it’s popular in the UK – what I didn’t realise was just how popular it is in Canada. I did the best part of 15 interviews with Canadian media yesterday. When my agent put out the press statement the internet in Canada broke! “I’m really grateful. For so many people to be so supportive of me – I mean they know I went to war, that I got blown up, that I won 46 www.espmag.co.uk

the People’s Strictly Strictly and danced the Paso Doble – and now they know I’m going on Corrie and they’re really excited, and that’s nice. I expect that from family and friends not strangers.” Fans of the soap have seen Kevin Webster's son Jack struggling to cope with having his foot amputated in recent weeks. It’s hoped Cassidy’s character, a Paralympic coach, will help lift Jack’s spirits. Cassidy’s acted on stage, made guest appearances on TV’s Doctors and Holby City and is currently filming in his first feature film, a remake of the movie Doom, but appearing in one of the nation’s favourite soaps has been a whole new experience. “The machine is so well oiled – there isn’t a kink. The actors are all unbelievably nice and kind and supportive. I had to say to them, if I make a mistake or step in the wrong place please go easy on me – and they were really good like that. “I deliberately didn’t watch it beforehand because I thought I’d get starstruck on set!” You can read our full interview with Cassidy on www.espmag.co.uk and catch his appearance on Coronation Street on ITV from October 22.

There’s another reason for Corrie fans to get excited this month as our very own local hero Cassidy Little will be appearing in the iconic soap at the end of the month.

Keith says...

I decided that Friday night was my favourite night at the Peterborough Beer Festival – good choice. After surviving the downpour of rain which every good Beer Festival brings, (fortunately not too much this year), I saw the two main acts. Revolver performed a great set of anthemic rock tracks including Killers, Green Day and Kaiser Chiefs. Not forgetting a rendition of Erasure’s Respect. All of the set got the response from the Festival goers that any band loves to see, and prepared us for the headline act of the night, the Dizzy Miss Lizzys. They were making a welcome return to the Beer Festival after a few years absence. They brought us two sets with a short interval to enable us (and them) to recharge our glasses and brought us some Beatles and Stones classics as well as Gizz Butt’s Firestarter. It was a tremendous performance and I particularly loved Hotel California and All the Young Dudes. It was a really tight and vibrant show completing a great night. Unfortunately I was unable to get to the closing Saturday night to see The Killerz, but according to friends who did go, I definitely chose the right night musically. 48 www.espmag.co.uk

Celebrate Thin Lizzy @ Dedication 15 From the excitement of the Dizzy Miss Lizzys at the Beer Festival to a Thin Lizzy evening at The PSL Club (Peterborough Sports and Leisure Club) on Lincoln Road, New England. That’s the venue for Dedication 15 on Saturday October 6. It celebrates the memory of Phil Lynott of Irish rock legends Thin Lizzy who would have been 69 this year and is one of Ireland’s greatest ever rockers. Once again, promoter and self-confessed Thin Lizzy fan, Terry Naraine, has assembled a great line up for the evening, and it’s amazing that so many rock musicians have been inspired by the music and persona of Phil Lynott. This year’s headliners will be Peterborough's own Thin Lizzy tribute band Lizzy On The Loose who’ve been the backbone of countless Dedication shows over the past 14 years in this, and various line ups, and promise again something really special for this year’s show playing a full 90 minute set. They are joined by the excellent Black Rose (Society) from Northampton who promise again something really special as they celebrate their own 30th Anniversary as a band on the night of the show, playing a full 75 minute set. Also on the line up are Last Minute Brigade anthemic rock covers band, fresh from their recent Peterborough Beer Festival success, and finally, show openers this year, classic rock covers band, Rocket Queen from Wisbech, featuring the phenomenal talent of Sharon Day on lead vocals. All proceeds from the show will go again to the Roisin Dubh Trust which includes support to under privileged children in Ireland and helps support mothers that have lost their children at an early age. There is some great Thin Lizzy memorabilia up for grabs in the raffle on the night and as always it promises to be a memorable night. Tickets are available in advance from Terry Naraine on 07796 250071, or direct from The PSL Club or again on the door on the night of Saturday October 6 at The PSL Club, Doors open 6pm and the show starts at 6.45pm.

New Single from Idolising Nova One of the city’s originals bands we’ve been keeping an eye on is Idolising Nova and I’m pleased to hear more good news from the guys. Not only do they have a brand new single out this month but they’ve also been snapped up by a big booking agency. New single In The Wild will be released on Friday October 5 and it’ll be available to buy/stream on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Google Play and all the other online stores. Jack from the band told me – “It’s a catchy song, which we recorded with the producing duo Sugar House in St Helens. In this day and age with everyone using social media, you see a lot of people complaining and you can’t help but think sometimes that those people need to take a step back, have a look around and they’ll realise that there are people who’ve got it a lot worse than them! In The Wild gets that point across.” Sadly you can’t catch the guys locally at the moment but when the chance arises I’d get in quick as Jack says they could soon be playing much further afield. “We’ve recently signed to one of the biggest booking agencies in the world, United Talent Agency, so we’re hoping that we can get some big support tours and festival slots in 2019.”

The Brays Live! Popular local guys The Brays will be back in town performing at The Solstice this month as part of the bar’s live music series. Catch them on Friday October 26 from 10.30pm in

the SolGarden. These live sessions are always huge so make sure you arrive early for this one! It’s free entry before 10.30pm too and the music continues after the band’s

performance with their resident DJ’s entertaining you until the early hours inside and out in the SolGarden and across all their rooms. For more info visit www.thesolstice.co.uk.

Live music every week Highway To Hell'oween 4 Four of the best tributes in the UK are coming together for one night of mayhem on Saturday October 27. This monster tribute rock night features Peterborough’s Let There B/DC (AC/DC), The Zeppelins (Led Zeppelin), Motorpace (Motorhead) and Izzy Osbourne (Ozzy Osbourne + Black Sabbath). Let There B/DC, the Peterborough based AC/DC tribute have played to thousands of people all over the country in the last 7 years. Every show is a powerhouse of explosive rock and roll. Expect to hear all your favourite hits mixed with lesser known album tracks. The Zeppelins are an authentic tribute to Led Zeppelin made up of

musicians with decades of experience who capture the sound, the energy and the look of Led Zeppelin at the height of their fame. Motorpace from Northampton are described as hard, fast, exciting and loud - just how Motorhead should be. Izzy Osbourne is the onstage persona of Malcolm Evans who performs songs from both Ozzy's solo and Black Sabbath career. Doors open at the South Grove Community Centre, Grove Court, Woodston at 5.30pm and the bands start at 6pm through until 11.30pm. Wristbands will be strictly limited to 200. Tickets are £10 in advance via skiddle.com/e/13174944 or £15 on the door.

Last Minute Brigade One Year On One of the names that’s jumped out of the Peterborough music scene is Last Minute Brigade who’ve found themselves in demand on the local circuit. The band’s recently celebrated a full year of gigging so we caught up with them for a quick word… Last Minute Brigade officially began in August 2017 with Staceman on drums, Connor Gordon on vocals and keys, Andy Hughes on guitar and Dan Stimpson on bass. They originally started out just to do stand in gigs hence the name. It soon became apparent though, that they had something quite special as a band. Staceman told me – “We did our first gig in September that year and the reception from people was amazing. So we did our first official gig in October at The Yard Of Ale in Peterborough and we went down a storm and the following just grew with each gig and the support has been overwhelming.” They cover artists such as Queen, The Who, Oasis, Coldplay, Led Zeppelin, ACDC, the Manics, Pulp, Muse and more. He says it’s been an amazing year – “We had the whole Wednesday evening at this year's Peterborough Beer Festival on the embankment in August. That for us was incredible and a show we won't ever forget. Plus we’ve done many great smaller festivals and pub gigs in Peterborough and the surrounding area. Again the support has been way beyond what we thought so soon.” If you’ve caught Last Minute Brigade in action you’ll know it’s a full-on night. “It’s pure showmanship and songs played to a high standard with high energy entertainment,” says Staceman. “We believe in getting the crowds involved and leave them wanting more. “Every gig is a highlight for us – you never know what will happen each time and something crazy always happens. Let's just say there have been many Spinal Tap moments!” Although the guys play covers Staceman would like to see more choice on the local music scene. “I’d like to see a much bigger original music scene. It's not what it used to be.” And they might just be adding to that themselves over the next year – “We want to play as many festivals as possible and keep it fresh with new ideas and play further afield with as many pubs as possible. Most all to have a good time. Plus we are looking at writing original music as a band and throw the odd song in and see where it goes.”

Introducing

Andy Hughes Here at ESP we like to highlight local talent and I’m pleased to say there seems to be plenty to choose from! So let me introduce you to Andy Hughes a local singersongwriter, multi instrumentalist and producer from Peterborough. The talented 24 year-old is also the lead guitarist in popular local covers band Last Minute Brigade featured here. He’s a familiar face on the local scene as he also works as a deputy musician, often drumming with Velocity and other bands. Andy’s produced his own album Music For Melancholy Minds which features 15 original songs recorded at his home recording studio (Personal Noise). It was released in the summer and is available on all of the popular digital streaming outlets (Spotify, Deezer, iTunes, Bandcamp, Amazon Music etc) also coming soon to compact disc. Andy not only composed the tracks and wrote the lyrics but also played all the instruments! It’s already been highly rated by other local musicians who clearly respect Andy’s talents with the likes of David Smith (Austin Gold) saying – "Sounds great man! Obviously there’s a flavour of Manics which is a f***ing cool thing!" Gizz Butt (The Prodigy/Dizzy Miss Lizzys) commented – "It's very good, reminding me a little of early Manic Street Preachers. I don’t think people are quite aware of everything he is capable of and it’s going to be impossible representing that with one project but this one is really putting the Andy Hughes musical legacy out there!" Ricky Worraker (Velocity) was equally impressed – “Pure sex from start to finish, this is the album you want to make love to this summer... Great vocals, guitar work and excellent production as well!” But that’s not all, Andy also has many other solo releases online, EP's, singles and another album, The Samurai Boy Saga: 1986, which is a concept album. Check out this local musician on the following links: https://andyhughesmusic.bandcamp.com/music https://www.youtube.com/user/Hady1994 www.facebook.com/AndyHughesMusic You can catch Andy in action at a solo acoustic gig at Puzzles? on Bridge Street on Saturday October 20.

Jess Glynne ESP cover star, super successful popstar Jess Glynne heads out on tour next month hitting arenas across the UK – so you better be quick if you want to see her live. The November tour comes off the back of her album release Always In Between and kicks off in Glasgow on October 15 followed by all of the UK’s major cities – including a stop off at London’s O2 Arena on October 20. There’s no stopping Jess as she continues to make UK chart history. She clocked up her seventh No.1 single with I’ll Be There and is currently in the charts again with her latest single All I Am. ESP caught Jess in action at Newmarket racecourse last year as part of their summer concert series and it was a cracking gig. It seems hard to believe that it’s just 3 years since the release of her momentous debut album I Cry When I Laugh. Selling over 2 million copies worldwide and including a mass of smash hit singles including Hold My Hand, Take Me Home and Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself, it consolidated Jess as one of the most important British popstars and a formidable songwriter. Celebrated for her intimate yet universally appealing themes, Jess has connected with millions of people across the globe – demonstrating her peerless ability to tell the truths young women want to hear; about the loves that build them up and let them down; the aspirations and dreams that might turn sour but you’ll smile through them anyway. These themes are passionately continued in Always In Between. Always In Between finds Jess on a breath-taking journey of self-acceptance as she comes to terms with her new-found fame, heartbreak and the well-known pressure of writing a second album. The result is another great album that captures the heart of what being a 28-year old woman in 2018 can feel like – trying to balance real life with everything that you want it to be. With a tone of joyful harmony and acceptance set by I’ll Be There already, Thursday (co-written with Ed Sheeran), explores our many insecurities and the idea that sometimes stripping everything back can make you feel most yourself, while All I Am attempts to answer the niggling voice inside so many people’s head asking if they are enough. For tickets to her UK arena tour this November see www.livenation.co.uk and www.ticketmaster.co.uk.
