NEW VOICE FOR RADIO CAMBS Listen out to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire to find out who their New Voice will be this month. ESP was proud to join the judging panel at the Key Theatre to help discover some new talent and the successful New Voice will be called at 8am on Friday October 4 live on air so make sure you tune in to find out who it will be. We will have more on our website and social media and then ESP will be featuring them in our November issue when we’ll introduce you properly to the person who wowed us.
PHANTOMS ARE BACK ON THE ICE The greatest show in Peterborough has returned as the Peterborough Phantoms Ice Hockey Club kick off their NIHL National League campaign so why not give it a look? After a silverware laden season last term, the Phantoms are going in search of more trophies in what promises to be the most exciting league campaign in recent memory. Slava Koulikov’s team won three trophies last year in an action-packed and fun filled season at Planet Ice, Peterborough. Phantoms currently compete in the second division of British Ice Hockey. This year, the league format has changed to bring more of the best teams from around the country together into one league, guaranteeing exciting matches and actionpacked weekends on a regular basis. Whether you watch with your mates or bring the family, the Phantoms has something for everyone, making it one of the best nights out in town for people of all ages.

URBAN CLASSICS AT THE SOLSTICE The guys behind Urban Classics have been in touch and if urban tunes are your thing you need to make your way to The Solstice on the third Friday every month. They specialise in all things urban from hip hop, to Bashment, to Afrobeats and everything in between. They’ve hosted names like Ranz, One Acen and Jay1 just to name a few. This month they’re hosting one of the most amazing artists of this generation. With his hit single racking in almost 23 million views on the grm daily youtube channel they’re proud to announce a live P.A from none other than Zie Zie on Friday October 18. CAN YOU FEEL THE FORCE? The Force is definitely strong in this one as the world’s first and only fully accessible Film and TV Convention (Comiccon) returns with their biggest event in the city yet! Feel the Force Day XL opens its doors at 11am on Saturday October 5 at a new venue, the East of England Arena in Peterborough. There’ll be a marketplace packed with film and TV memorabilia, clothing, jewellery and a variety of collectibles. Displays will also include vintage cars, a giant Stay Puft marshmallow man, as featured in the classic Ghostbusters and a real Delorean, as featured in the Back to the Future trilogy. The event’s designed to be completely accessible to everyone. Peterborough Zombie Walk If you’ve ever caught sight of the Peterborough Zombie Walk you could be forgiven for thinking you were on a film set. The incredible make-up and effects people come up with never ceases to impress us and this year the living dead will be shambling their way through Peterborough on Saturday November 2. The horde will be gathering together in their grimness at Charters bar from 4pm and then setting off dragging their bloody limbs through the streets of the city centre. ESP’s Mikey Clarke loves Christmas – it just so happens it’s his birthday too! So in previous years he’s been all too keen to pop down and test out the latest toys at Queensgate. Once again the shopping centre is giving us the chance to see what are the must-have toys for Christmas 2019 and see what will make it on to our kids list to Santa this year. To crown the city’s top toy for Christmas 2019, Toy Testing will take place from Monday October 21 - Saturday October 26 from 11am-4pm in a pop-up toy factory in Central Square outside Primark. And this year, the toys will be bigger, better, and more exciting than ever before! From The Ultimate Walking Buzz Lightyear and the Fortnite Battle Bus, to the LEGO Harry Potter Night Bus and the Pets Alive Robotic Llama*, this will be a chance for local children to play with and score the toys that everyone’s going to want this Christmas. Tv Star Turns on the Lights at Springfields This year’s big Illuminations Switch On at Springfields Outlet in Spalding sees TV star Martin Kemp turn on the lights. The Spandau Ballet guitarist, film actor and former Eastenders star will be part of a fantastic night of entertainment at the outlet centre on Thursday October 24 from 6 - 9pm. The event will be hosted by Joseph Begley and John Marshall from Lincs FM and features entertainment including the St. Paul’s Community Primary School Choir. Halloween When there's something strange in your neighbourhood, who you gonna call? Nats Smith and Ross Ayres!

f you live in Peterborough and the surrounding areas, you may not have seen a ghost yourself... but I bet you know someone local that has! Mikey Clarke It's unsurprising when you think about our great city’s history. Peterborough began as a Saxon settlement. It’s seen many lives lost over hundreds of years and it would seem that many of those spirits refuse to leave. I’ve always been fascinated with the supernatural. Maybe that's why I hit it off so well with my now dear friends Nats Smith and Ross Ayres when I met them years back. Using special equipment, they’re Peterborough's very own Ghostbusters – having been hunting things that go bump in the night for many years now. In that time, have they actually witnessed strange goings on? To get you into the spirit of Halloween, I interviewed them to find out. I wanted to know what got them into Ghost hunting. Ross explained, “I love exploring the unknown. Nobody really has conclusive evidence of what happens to our souls when we die (if there is such a thing). Many, many people around the world, myself included, have observed things that defy explanation or are very hard to explain through our limited understanding. Ghost hunting is like a voyage through my own fear to the edges of the known universe we call reality.” Nats told me, “I got into ghost hunting after having quite a few experiences which started when I was just 8 years-old. I started to research the paranormal at 16 when I understood more of what was going on around me and after my mum looked up the history on our house. I was intrigued as to what more I could learn.” I’ve participated in enough local Ghost Walks to know that there’s more than a handful of places in Peterborough and beyond

that are supposedly haunted. According to Nats, the most haunted place is the Museum. “We’ve had so many experiences there. A couple of things stand out. One thing was seeing a shadow running up the stairs. The other came from doing a glass divination – a simple exercise of using a glass on a smooth surface and asking questions with a movement being a response. We were given accurate answers that we couldn’t possibly have known from centuries ago. Museum staff were able to confirm the facts. “It’s interesting that even though I had all my ghost hunting equipment with me, it was something as simple as a glass that got the best response.” Ross added, “We've been all over Peterborough and some other places in the wider local area. We'll go anywhere that local legend or witness reports take us. It’s the Peterborough Museum that stands out for me too. On one occasion we were able to record a disembodied voice. A digital recording device was left in a room by itself all night. When we came back to it there was a single and clear voice whispering the word: ‘look’. The voice sounded like a child's, maybe ten years-old or so. It was clear and not like static or some other background noise. This was close-up like someone whispering in your ear.”
With Nats and Ross being well known amongst the ghost hunting community, I asked them whether people often came to them with their own stories. “It’s mostly just friends that I speak to as not everyone is into conversations of the paranormal,” Ross said. “People often talk of lost loved ones coming to visit them in the night and actually being able to see the bed move as their ghost sits on it.” Nats added, “I became a first-grade certified demonologist in 2018, so Ive had quite a few people contact me through my course with stories of possessed houses. I’ve even had some locals contact me but often wish to remain anonymous, in fear of being made a mockery of
2019 or laughed at. These people are often asking for help or explanations. I’m convinced something supernatural was indeed in one lady’s home, but due to a confidentiality agreement I can’t say any more than that sadly.” You might be surprised to hear that Ross is a sceptic. “I don't actually believe or disbelieve in ghosts, even though I've seen and recorded things I can't explain,” he told me. “I personally think that some paranormal events happen through collective telekinesis and some are fear-induced auditory or visual hallucination. “When we do a divination, I think there's the possibility that we're using some form of untapped telepathic ability in humans. I'm also open to the idea that there is an observable soul and that old buildings store some residual human energy within the walls. I just don't know. Hopefully after a few more years of doing what we do, we’ll get a little closer to finding out.” Many of you will be celebrating Halloween this year. It may be wise to take on board Nat’s words of advice. “I feel people need to be open minded when trying out a haunted location. Experience tells me if you go in relaxed and not expecting things to happen, you’re more likely to get a response. Don't mess around with things you don't understand. Auditions for a chance to co-present or drive your own show on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire saw ESP support the search for a New Voice and join the judging. We’ll be able to bring you news of the results soon so keep an eye on our social media. I became interested in working in radio during the late 1990s when I was writing Peptalk in the local newspapers. Back then you had to write a letter to newspaper editors and radio station controllers and convince them to give you a shot, which they did, and I’m thankful for. If you managed to hit on something novel or unique (Peptalk was) then you’d get a chance to prove your passion was backed up with talent. Back then there was no such thing as talent opportunities, as in the main you’d have had to go through some kind of

academy of sorts or sufficient education and study into the field you wanted to go into. Today of course opportunity is everywhere with the digital revolution that’s continuing to evolve and change everything. The Beeb’s New Voices campaign hoped to find the next generation of radio stars and 39 local radio stations across England and the Channel Islands have been hosting open auditions. This means ordinary people with a love for their local area could take to the mic with no previous experience or qualification required. It was a golden opportunity to be part of a British institution and to make a name for yourself while doing it. Very few of today’s famous broadcasters started without a stint at their local radio station and New Voices is all about nurturing homegrown talent. When I reminisce about the sacrifices I made (yes, I’m sounding old now) to get established into a career in media and communications, I can’t help thinking how today’s young people (I’m ready for the onslaught) have it slightly easier. I’ve always said there’s no substitute for local knowledge and I’ll be keeping my ear fully tuned to hear it come to fruition. I can’t wait to hear the city’s new voice.
What’s the limit of sharing EVERYTHING in a relationship? I mean, how far is too far before your comfort zone becomes uncomfortable? I’m writing this after just destroying a bowl of Coco Pops (the white chocolate flavour – yum) for breakfast but I’ve read something that’s making me gag. Apparently, using your partner’s toothbrush can put you at risk of contracting herpes. Some 100 million bacteria live in a toothbrush and sticking someone else’s in your gob sparks off the mother of bacteria parties where all strains are invited to potentially give you something nasty. I do know couples who share a toothbrush. And I also know a couple who share the same bath water, which is arguably seen as more acceptable but you still wouldn’t catch me splashing around in someone else’s cocktail of sweat, dead skin and toe bogies. Then there’s sharing razors and hair brushes – again, not on my shift. What’s next? Maybe sharing cotton wool buds, toothpicks or even picking each other’s noses? I know what you’re thinking; I didn’t say consume what you dig out on the end of your finger though, so please let’s not lower the tone here. I guess what I’m trying to say is where’s our decorum people? It’s bad enough walking your kids to school in a dressing gown but harnessing a herpes factory on your toothbrush is where we should be drawing the line.

Edwards Keeps Evolving One of my favourite and longstanding venues has undergone a £500,000 refurbishment to ensure it remains one of the most popular bars in the city centre just as it celebrates its 20th birthday!
After 43 years in the motorcycle business Robin and Jenny Homewood have decided to retire and I for one will miss them. Jenny’s father – Harry Balderston – opened a motorcycle shop in Cobden Street 80 years ago and Jenny and Robin continued with the business right up until the present Balderston site in Hampton. My earliest memories and I guess where my passion for motorbikes began, was at their Lincoln Road premises. I used to get my hair cut at Fortunato’s across the way and would always marvel at the bikes in the window before and after getting my ears lowered. Fast forward to a few years ago, Balderston sponsored my column and I got to
know Jenny and Robin. I can honestly say I’ve never met two more welcoming, sincere, professional and appreciative people in the motorcycle trade. Good people rub off on their employees and that’s what’s happened at Balderston where everyone is the salt of the earth. Thankfully the crew’s been left in good hands with the business being bought by Sycamore, who have in their portfolio BMW cars and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It’s a natural fit and I know Balderston will go from strength to strength. To Jenny and Robin: Thanks for giving me the chance to ride and write about your bikes over the years. Enjoy your retirement and be super proud of the legacy you continued.
Still Bella in Town! It’s been at least 20 years but it was good to bump into Solstice manager Pete Bell. ‘Bella’ back in the day was pulling the strings at Shanghai Sam’s / Quo Vadis at a time when the city had ‘proper’ nightclubs before bar culture became heavily embedded into the city centre’s night scene. Pete and other club owners like Rinaldo, Frank at L’Aristo’s, the Howard and Suzanne (mainly Suzanne, yum) partnership at 5th Avenue and later on Mark May at Liquid were heading up successful venues and a large part of that success was down to how they came across at the door. In those days club owners were very much part of the fabric of the venue and they were natural PR

It was launched at an opening party with TOWIE star James Lock and we’ll have all the pics in the next issue. They didn’t just focus on the operational side, they made time to get to know their customers and were more often than not seen at the doors adding their personal touch at the very start of your nightclub experience. They were personalities and nightlife celebrities in their own right. Today I’m told our venue owners and managers are a different breed. It’s understandably a more demanding financial environment both revellers and owners find themselves in but it seems there are no characters anymore. The charm, edge and presence of those in charge isn’t there – it’s been diluted or hasn’t been there in the first place. I’m not saying the most important reason for me

frequenting certain nightclubs 25 years ago was because of the manager or owner. But what I am saying is that their personality did reflect the vibe of the venue and for me the atmosphere of a club was the main reason I’d go to it. The Solstice has been a sturdy staple of our night scene for more than 20 years. Pete’s only been there for a tiny fraction of it but what he’s brought with him is those front-of-house people skills you just can’t teach. Nice to see you Pete and next time we’ll have a beer!

The city’s new dessert restaurant Heavenly Desserts opened its doors last month, and we had a VIP invitation to the new venue on its opening night. ESP columnists Sarah Slack and Darren Grigas were among those keen to try out the array of tempting treats and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Based along Cowgate, this new offering in the Heavenly Desserts chain boasts stylish decor, marble-top tables, plush seats, and a variety of delicious dessert options. From the sharing platter served on the night we can safely say the brownies are absolutely divine, as well as the gorgeously gooey cookie dough and the freshly made super light and fluffy waffles drizzled with maple syrup. There was also a colourful array of ice creams which we can’t wait to sample, including refreshing fruit sorbets plus some truly decadent flavours of gelato such as mint choc chip, creme caramel, and Belgian chocolate.

Time to be a Community Superhero! In this ‘people powered’ issue of ESP we’re looking at how local people can do big things for themselves and each other to make life better in and around the city. You’ve got the power to be a super hero in your community and Peterborough City Council is keen to back your great ideas with support. They’re encouraging new projects in the city where people come together, organise themselves and volunteer. What can you do to make a difference?
Hello superhero! Superhero films are all the rage – and it’s fun to think that there are people out there ready to help and protect us. But *spoiler alert* the heroes from Hollywood aren’t real, which is truly disappointing! And yet… I’ve been finding out that in Peterborough we have many of our own. Over the past few months I’ve been talking to people across the city about what they do in their neighbourhood and community to make it a better place. From litter picking in the Ortons to looking out for their neighbours in Castor, there is a lot going on. My job, and my passion, is to get more people active in their community. And it’s great that ESP magazine is helping out in this edition, with some ideas of how. At the council we’re also looking at new ways to support community activity, as we think strong communities are the best way to improve people’s lives. It’s the small things that really matter too – and taking a little bit of time for other people. It might be as simple as saying ‘hello’, or having a chat and a cup of coffee. If you want to do something a little bigger, but you just don’t know where to start, such as starting a football group for young people, you can get in touch with PCVS. I think we all need others to help us on our way, and sometimes we just need that extra bit. Loneliness and mental health problems are on the rise, and I believe a little bit of kindness can go a long way. Older members of the community often need some super hero support and the Italian Community Association have proved they’re powered by great food when it comes to offering some valuable help. Volunteer heroes from the Italian Community Association stepped in to run a drop-in day with lunch every Tuesday, at The Fleet in Fletton to make sure there was food and good company for those who need it. The Lava Lamp Lighters are a local band made up of musicians with various special needs who are showing that music really is for everyone.
H
aving just released their second EP, Ignore Disability, this enthusiastic group are regulars at Beat This and Chime in Norfolk Street, Peterborough where they learn to play various instruments, rehearse regularly and record their own material. Beat This is a Community Interest Company and includes the Chime Creation Centre where you can learn, create, record and play. It’s where the Lava Lamp Lighters get support and encouragement learning to play a variety of instruments. ESP was invited along to one of their rehearsals and treated to some of the tunes they’ve written themselves. Beat This was founded in 2009 by two passionate music producers Lee Ashton and Ben Turner. They realised that there

was a lack of extra curricula music activity in Peterborough and wanted to set up a service that would give people access to a wide range of interactive, hands-on musical and creative experiences. They decided to set up a charitable, not-forprofit social enterprise called Beat This, as the vehicle to deliver this service. Many local people will know Simon Piper from successful Peterborough gypsy swing band Opaque and he’s one of the guys helping to teach music and songwriting there. It was Beat This founder Benny Turner, also from Opaque, who brought Simon into the fold. Simon told us he’s been involved for a few years now and loves the way it improves the lives of the band and promotes greater independence and creativity. “I think it makes a huge difference. I think they all just really enjoy coming to practice every week, the social side of it, but also there’s something universal about music – it doesn’t matter how good your language skills are, everyone can understand it. Getting out and gigging, I think brings them a lot of joy.” The members of the band can vary, and not everyone was there the day we popped in, but on their latest EP it’s regulars Chris on vocals, Jeremy on bass, Martyn on keys, Natasha on bongos, Enzo on drums, Emily on djembe and Collum on percussion. Martyn plays guitar and electric piano in the Lava Lamp Lighters and told us he looks forward to going along as much as he can. “It’s good for me. It’s my dream because I always had a music background since I was little and I was interested in guitar. I am a songwriter and I’m learning to play the
electric guitar and the electric piano. “We all write songs and contribute. Gigging is an exciting experience but it’s also a scary feeling like you have butterflies in your stomach. We are working on some new songs and are going to do a single. “I enjoy it feeling the music and the vibe of the experience of being in the band and being with my friends. People who are able bodied say people with learning difficulties can’t do things like play music but we want to show it’s no problem and encourage others to do it too.” Lead singer Chris, who also performs as solo artist Shadow, belted out some tunes for us with the band and you can see everyone’s having a great time. Chris told us it’s been life changing for him to be part of. “I love it; I try and get here as much as I can. I want to do more gigs and get the band recognised more. “It’s been really important to me because I couldn’t have met Benny Turner without coming into the band and I wouldn’t have done my solo stuff without Benny. Being part of the band has really made a difference. It’s given me new talents, writing songs and lyrics – I never thought I could do that beforehand.” We were surprised to hear that Beat This and Chime don’t receive any funding, yet they’re doing such an amazing job. The New Theatre’s Opening Night is a Hit! Peterborough’s Louis Smith certainly got the party started at the New Theatre with his music and dance show Rip It Up The 70s and what a night it was! It was the first show under Selladoor Venues, the new management team running the New Theatre on Broadway and it was fantastic to see this iconic venue packed with people, up out of their seats singing and dancing in the aisles. The show featured former Olympic gymnast and Strictly champion Louis Smith who’s enjoying new found success with a dance career, along with Rachel Stevens for S Club 7, Lee Ryan from Blue, Melody Thornton from Pussycat Dolls and Gio Spano the X Factor finalist. We’ve waited a long time to see this amazing theatre back on its feet under professional management able to bring us the calibre of shows our city deserves and now it’s finally happening. Peterborough Beer Festival Just to cheer you up, here’s a summer throwback to when 27,500 of us descended on the Embankment and enjoyed supping some ales at the Peterborough Beer Festival in August. Perfectly organised by the local branch of CAMRA and brought to life by a dedicated band of truly wonderful volunteers, this annual event is one of ESP’s favourites and once again we were all too pleased to join the beer judging panel. The 42nd event did not disappoint with some great live music, a huge range of ales, gins, ciders and wine and… some great weather! Our photographer Mike Harris was there to capture you all having a fantastic time working you way through some 72,500 pints and 400 bottles of gin (that wasn’t all down to the Editor honest….) She’s one of the most popular hosts on TV and now Emma Willis is fronting the second series of Channel 4’s groundbreaking reality gameshow series, The Circle.
J
ust back on our TV screens, this year it’s coming from Greater Manchester and will feature more live episodes now hosted by Emma. If you didn’t catch the first series, The Circle is a reality show perfectly aimed at our social media generation. It’s basically a popularity game where anyone can be anyone. The players live in separate apartments in a single building and play games and chat with each other through The Circle, a purpose-built, voice activated social media site. They don’t meet up at all and so can pretend to be whoever they think will make them most popular on their profiles and chat… that could be someone completely different to themselves, even a different sex! They rate each other frequently and unpopular players are blocked. Once blocked, and before leaving the show, the eliminated players will get to meet other players in person for the first time. Ultimately, the most popular player wins a cash prize of up to £100,000. Fresh from Big Brother, Emma says joining this show feels like the right move and she can’t wait. “It just felt like a natural thing to do, to be honest. I know there's this kind of suggestion it is just a replacement for Big Brother for me, but I view it quite differently. “The thing with Big Brother is that for me, I always viewed it with the purist mentality, it was a social experiment. That is always how I watched Big Brother. But this, I very much watch it as a game. I hated Big Brother being compared to a game but this is clearly a game with the interaction of people, how they'll react in certain scenarios and then seeing who is going to be themselves and who is going to play it to try and be the most popular and win that money.” Emma admits that before she’d watched the first series she wasn’t convinced of the format but can now see it has a lot to say about how we live with social media. “Before I'd watched it, I was like, ‘This is glorifying what is wrong with social media, where anyone can be anyone. You don't know who you're talking to’. But I hadn't watched it and that was just my opinion. Then I watched it and I thought ‘This is a glowing beacon to teach people,

do not trust who you're talking to online. Because you just don't know!’ So I think it's a brilliant vehicle for education in the way that a game is showing you that you should be so wary of anything that you're doing online, who you're talking to. “It's fascinating to see what people are going to do. How are they going to play it, who will be themselves?” In her own life Emma thinks she maintains quite a healthy relationship with social media, personally favouring Instagram which she finds – “a much more positive place than Twitter” – but is well aware of its pitfalls. “I can see how it can be addictive but I also like to keep it at an arm's length,” says Emma. “I like to use it for work and I like to use it for personal use as well. I'm always conscious of being realistic on it and painting a true picture of my life, rather than a version of you. I think that's the responsibility we should all be taking. Even if you have that strength I think we can all still get sucked into it.” In The Circle Emma’s hoping to see some varied characters and diversity but is intrigued to see how they all approach it. “What’s brilliant to watch is seeing if people go in with one objective and that is to win the money and then does their conscience kick in? Are they like, ‘I literally can't do this, I'm lying to them and I can't do this anymore’. Then they might switch again and remember it's for a hundred grand. It's for the money that, to an extent, drives that decision. “This is a massive game at the end of the day so you need your tactics but you also need to adapt.” It seems Emma is rarely off our screens and has been enjoying hosting several successful series. The Circle is her latest challenge but then there’s also another series called Pants on Fire on the way for this lovely lady. She’s certainly the go-to host for TV companies so it’s no wonder she says she’s not worrying about her career. “No, because I never thought I was going to have it, so I should just enjoy it. One day it will end and I'll have had a bloody good time doing it!” Sounds like a great philosophy to us! Catch The Circle on Channel 4, weeknights at 10pm.
Garden House In this issue of ESP we’re seeking out the super heroes who are stepping up and making a difference in their communities. Homelessness is a big problem but some fantastic volunteers in Peterborough are proving that when it comes to doing good deeds, they’re playing a huge part in helping people get their lives back on track… The Safer off the Streets partnership was created just over a year ago with the aim of tackling homelessness in Peterborough’s city centre and the wider city. Nineteen partners, comprising voluntary, religious and community organisations, have worked together for a campaign that’s raised around £12,000. One of those partners is The Garden House on Wheel Yard, run by Light Project Peterborough. Although separate from the SoS project, money from the SoS campaign goes directly to Garden House, as it relies on funds to keep it open. It’s a building in the heart of Peterborough which you’ve probably passed hundreds of times without even realising it. Inside, however, is a sparkling example of the city’s community pulling together to help those in need. On any given weekday dozens of rough sleepers may pass through the doors, seeking help to get their lives back on track or just a cup of tea and a chat, with the help of a team of volunteers. Volunteers such as Teresa, who joined the team after hearing about Garden House through her local church, where she’s been a regular volunteer on the Peterborough Winter Night Shelter. Teresa told us – “The Garden House is a magical place. It helps everybody that doesn’t have somewhere to call home, and who other people don’t even think about. They sometimes walk through the green gates and have nothing but themselves.
“It’s certainly grown since we opened and the more people that know about it the better. Hopefully that will continue and the word will spread that we can help people get back to being themselves again.” Rewind a year to last October, and Paul (47) was one of those people who needed help the most, suffering from several health problems that were byproducts of a troubled lifestyle. “I came out of hospital and saw my GP, who was on-board with the (Garden House) project,” Paul told us. “She gave me a slip of paper with ‘The Garden House, Chrissy’ – which I still carry in my wallet – and I found the guys here.

“I guess I was afraid to ask for help and didn’t want to talk to anybody. That soon changed, and they helped me so much. “You come here and you’re not sure what to expect, but you’re treated fairly – no one will judge you and everybody has a skill where they can help their own progression, or other people’s.” Paul’s now found stability and moved on in life, completing the circle to become a volunteer himself. “I wanted to give back the help I got,” Paul told us. “There’s an amazing group of people here that give up their time. “Without the Garden House I probably wouldn’t be in a good place, to be honest. This place changed my life. “I’m just taking life one day at a time – let’s see what tomorrow brings.”

t was celebrations all round as the latest crop of students celebrated their achievements at a huge graduation ceremony in Peterborough Cathedral in September and many have already secured jobs in the area. The students from University Centre Peterborough (UCP) were joined by 850 guests including proud family members and their friends as well as academic staff. As the students donned their gowns at the Town Hall ahead of the prestigious ceremony they were able to enjoy some tasty food provided by street food traders from Peterborough City Market. The market, which is managed by Peterborough City Council has a mouthwatering selection of Greek, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Nepalese, Nigerian and vegan offerings. This food was representative of the diverse cultures of students who’ve achieved their degrees at UCP. The Mayor of Peterborough Cllr Gul Nawaz, and Deputy Mayor Cllr Diane Lamb led the procession to the cathedral where guest speakers highlighted the new graduates’ potential to actively contribute to
Peterborough’s thriving economy. To benefit local causes, University Centre Peterborough has made a substantial donation to the Mayor’s charities for 2019/20, which are Little Miracles, Carers Trust Peterborough and Friends of Peterborough Hospitals. It’s been another successful year for UCP and their students with many having already secured full-time work in their chosen careers in the local area, whilst others are continuing to postgraduate study at universities including Warwick and Oxford. University Centre Peterborough’s reputation as a higher education institution continues to grow with local and national employers, as their degrees are aligned with business needs and lead to real job opportunities. There is now a diverse range of degrees in subject areas including accounting, archaeology, biological sciences, business management, digital arts, engineering, forensic investigation, journalism and marketing. FAKE AUTOPSY – REAL EXPERIENCE! The VIVIT Experience – the world’s first travelling live post mortem – as featured on Dragons Den is returning to Peterborough at an event organised by University Centre Peterborough. For those with a strong stomach and an interest in antatomy and physiology this will be a unique opportunity for students and teachers to gain a practical insight. This nationally award winning academic experience will take place on Thursday October 24 as part of the new BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences degree at University Centre Peterborough. It’s an opportunity that most students or teachers will never get and some of what is offered during The VIVIT experience session not even medical professionals can get to see and do. science, biology, human biology, pharmacology, forensics, sports science, nursing, midwifery, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology and nutrition. The VIVIT Experience was even featured on Dragons Den last year and successfully secured investment from both Peter Jones and Deborah Meaden. It’s an amazing chance to participate in a recreated post mortem experience conducted on VIVIT - the worlds’ only semisynthetic human cadaver. You’ll be taken through a scientifically accurate recreated human body dissection learning in-depth anatomy and physiology. The anatomy used isn’t human though, it’s of swine origin, which is identical in size and structure and once harvested the samples are moved into VIVIT. VIVIT is a lifesize synthetic cadaver which is dissected for the audience to teach the structure and function of the human body.
There’ll be the opportunity to ask questions and at the same time handle the anatomical samples and even the chance to undertake some dissection for yourself. LocaL SLimming SuperStarS As we set into autumn, I was delighted to pop along to MAC’s autumn make up class, to make sure I could share the hottest trends for the next few months. With the clothes aisles full of warm, autumnal colourings – would the make-up trends be going the same way? Here’s what I learnt from the experts! •
The autumn trends are warm tones, using a lot of colours which have come straight from the catwalk.

Burnt oranges, reds and golds are key colours, which can easily be worn during the day for work, then ramped up for the evening with some added eye liner and longer lashes.

Make sure to look out for sparkly eyeshadows (like MAC’s ‘stylishly merry’, which sold out for them last Christmas and has been brought back by demand).

Highlighter pallets are an absolute must for everyone’s make up case to build up those shiny textures and colours for your autumn look.

Here at ESP, we felt a weight loss group in Peterborough deserved a big shout out, as it’s been awarded the title of ‘best in the country’ after members collectively lost over 800 stone. Run by Scott Smith, it beat off stiff competition from over 35,000 other groups. Well done guys and girls! Time to give your wellbeing the acid test... I recently watched a TV advert for heartburn and indigestion which I found so frustrating! Basically, we’re watching an individual who has a full on life seemingly on the go all the time, eating at the work desk, drinking coffee, chugging down a sandwich or large meal and then watching him wince at the pain he’s getting in his gut. Never fear, you can pop a chewable tablet or glug down some chalky liquid to put the fire out, then you can continue as you were, drinking your latte, sandwiches on the go and ignore the symptoms as there’s a pill for the ill – that’s the gist of the advert! Many of us get the occasional heartburn or acid reflux after overindulging such as at Christmas, and taking the odd antacid will give relief, but occasional use has now become the regular norm. So many people complain of indigestion or heartburn too frequently and can find that the over-the-counter solutions have less effect so you’re likely to be prescribed a PPI (protein pump inhibitor) if those symptoms persist. PPI’s are used to inhibit the gastric acid secretions from the stomach. PPI’s can be prescribed for many other reasons, such as protection from gastric ulcers from some drugs or gastric reflux for example. Short term use has not been found to cause side effects and can be really helpful in many cases. The long- term use though is slightly different in that it can cause unwanted side effects such as: • • • • •
Bone loss - leading to fractures B12 deficiency Iron anaemia Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth Unfavourable changes in our friendly bacteria leading to a host of gut and immune issues and much more – quite a price to pay on your health really
Stomach acid has a Ph of around 2-3.5, so it’s highly acidic. It breaks down proteins, protects the body from bacteria and other pathogens coming into the mouth from food/drinks etc and aids in the absorption and uptake of calcium, iron, B12, folic acid, and more. Often people will feel like they’re too acidic but what can be happening is the stomach acid production is too low and therefore your food is fermenting – especially proteins (rotting) and releasing acids and gasses which impairs all the benefits. 38 www.espmag.co.uk
This low stomach acid output can be triggered by stress, nutritional deficiencies such as B1 (thiamine), zinc and others, excess alcohol, some medical drugs and more. Outward symptoms of low acid output can include things like bloating, wind, belching and bad breath. You might feel full very quickly, see undigested food in you poo or suffer from diarrhoea and/or constipation. It can even cause flaky fingernails… and much more. So back to the advert for a moment, the thoughts that spring to my mind when I watch it are ‘how about looking at the root cause and helping to restore natural gastric balance’? Yes I know it’s only an advert but this is what I see in my practice very often so what would I ask? – • • •
• • • • •
Is he drinking enough water? Does he drink coffee daily? Is he taking foods his body can’t digest and therefore trigger inflammation and longer tissue damage such as gluten? Is he stressed? Does he drink excess alcohol? Is he sensitive to the casein in dairy? Does he have a bacterial infection? Is he eating excessive amounts of sugar, processed foods and animal protein/eggs?
So, whilst you may think that popping the antacids is innocent, it can lead to bigger problems further down. This approach is nothing more than symptom treatment and can go on to cause further issues. The body is signalling something is wrong – you wouldn’t ignore the red warning light in your car by putting a small blister plaster on the alert, yet we don’t listen to the information coming from our own body – something is not right! There are numerous natural ways to support this natural balance, but the root cause needs to be addressed otherwise using a natural supplement (such as a soother) is taking the same approach as taking the drug. Yes, agreed it may not come with the side effects and can help, but it is still allopathic thinking if you’re not looking for the underlying functional, dietary or lifestyle issues. SKI TOURING COMES TO TALLINGTON If a nip in the air has got you excited about hitting the slopes, there’s the chance to add a little more adventure to your usual ski holiday experience by learning how to go ski touring.

he artificial slopes at Tallington Lakes are a great place to learn and improve your ski technique and now they’re set to stage ski touring taster sessions for the first time with top instructor Blair Aitken sharing his skills. If exploring the mountains is something you’ve considered, or would like to try, this session should give you the inside track on how to don your skins for the uphill walks and take your ski experiences to an exciting new level as you ski downhill on beautiful untouched snow! On Sunday November 10 Blair Aitken will host a special Ski Touring Taster Session at Tallington Lakes. Blair is a BASI British Association of Snowsport Instructors Level 4 Instructor, and British Backcountry founder, so he’s just the guy to teach you the key skills needed to safely go on a ski tour. You’ll get the chance to try the equipment and really understand what ski touring involves. The session is practical, with some theory, and will cover ski touring techniques, including the use of skins and touring bindings, an introduction to navigation and avalanche awareness, familiarisation with avalanche safety equipment and planning your first steps into the sport if you decide it’s for you. Blair Aitken is an internationally qualified ski instructor and race coach, ski-mountaineer and former alpine national champion who has been backcountry skiing in Scotland since the mid-nineties so if anyone’s going to give you an insight into this sport – he’s the man! What’s it like to go ski touring? Ski touring is an exciting way to add a new sense of adventure to your ski trips and go exploring away from the busy resorts. Former Peterborough and Cambridge radio news editor Alison Dawes has been ski touring for about 20 years, after growing bored of the regular runs. ESP asked Alison what different challenges it brings. “It’s much more interesting for me than skiing on the piste because you encounter a range of snow conditions and terrains. One moment you can be high on a mountain top and then you will be skiing through a rock field or a forest and then back out into an open area. You need to rapidly adjust your skiing to account for the things you encounter so you might be using a powder technique in one section but then snowploughing on a narrow track ten minutes later!” How did you learn to do it? “I did a couple of courses in France - one which is basically how to ski in a lot of different types of snow and another more advanced version of the
same thing which also included practicing techniques for walking uphill on your skis. Touring skis have a special kind of binding which means you can lift your heel when walking uphill and then lock it down once you start to ski down again. Then I did a number of trips practicing over a couple of years before embarking on the Haute Route.” Would you recommend tuition? “Absolutely! It’s important to learn good technique, how to be safe and how to use the equipment properly. If you don’t learn how to do it properly you will also get tired really quickly and risk falling.” Why do you enjoy it so much? “It’s great to get away from all the crowds in the resorts and to go exploring! You get away from it all really quickly once you leave the lifts behind and can find yourself in some stunningly beautiful places with hardly anyone else around. It feels really special to be in parts of the mountains few other people visit. There are great views (if the weather is good obviously!) and the payback for all the walking is some fabulous downhills in wonderful untracked powder. You really need a guide who knows where the good routes are and where to find the best snow.”

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United… We have hosted an under 18 fixture for England in the past (a game with France) and in that England side was Chelsea star Mason Mount. Jack Clarke, who moved from Leeds United to Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year is a regular in the under 20 set-up and there are many future stars to spot. During my time of working at the football club I must have witnessed thousands of matches, from youth games to first team games and I’m rather like our director of football Barry Fry, I live, breathe and eat the game. Well not literally, my diet is appalling but eating footballs would be a stretch too far even for me.

hen the international break affects the Premier League, I get withdrawal symptoms from Match of the Day, but it does give the EFL an opportunity to showcase what we can provide and a 6-0 win over Rochdale during that period did get us some coverage a little bit further than the norm. While the England senior side were labouring to a victory over
Kosovo, I was putting the finishing touches to the statement that we were able to release about the Weston Homes Stadium staging an international of our own. You may have seen that our stadium will be hosting the international game between England under 20s and the Czech Republic under 20s. Once I got over the initial fear of correctly pronouncing those Czech players’
names, it got me thinking about how exciting this is for the city of Peterborough. We are a diverse city of multiple ethnicities, religions and nationalities. The fact that we’re able to attract an international fixture is a great opportunity for the city of Peterborough to come together and to use our wonderful hashtag of #AUnitedCity, it really is relevant.

Everybody needs good neighbours… We’ve all probably chatted over coffee at some point commenting on the lack of community spirit these days. Well, here’s your chance to be a real community ‘super hero’ and rebuild that spirit where you live – and we’re not talking a street party!
Whether you’ve lived somewhere for years or are new to an area, everybody needs a little help every now and then, so here’s your chance to step up and be that good neighbour. A Good Neighbours scheme pioneered by Castor Parish Council is a great example and it’s hoped other community led projects will start up across the city. Why not take a little inspiration from what they are doing and set something similar up where you live? Opportunity to help The Chairman of Castor Parish Council Cllr Neil Boyce came up with the idea when he realised there was an opportunity to help both the city council and local residents. The Good Neighbours scheme helps local people find a simple way to bring a bit of community spirit to where they live. It helps them look out for people in their community, to come alongside their neighbours, and help share local information that might enrich their lives.
You may be aware that someone living close to you might be struggling, is lonely or isolated. Simple things like saying ‘hello’ or having a cup of tea with them goes a long way. Going for a short walk with them through the park or to the shops can help even more. It’s likely you’ll notice things that could help prevent something like feeling lonely from becoming more serious. So this scheme is a chance to actually do your bit to help someone out. Make time to chat It’s simple stuff – but giving a bit of your time to be there, and taking time to encourage people, can make all the difference in people finding the strength to get on with their own lives and day to day tasks. Now, with a bit of advice from the likes of Age UK, Carers Trust and the Dementia Trust the Good Neighbours can do a little more and put people in touch with others. A little help certainly goes a long way and it’s proving very successful. Helping vulnerable residents in the community also means helping newcomers and those from different cultural backgrounds.
Local groups Through this aspect of the project they welcome any new arrivals and give them a pack brimming with useful info and local contacts as well as details of community and faith groups, common interest groups such as the WI, the allotment group and Zumba classes. They also share information about the area and anything relevant to help them settle in. When someone moves in, their nominated Way Warden will pop round to pass on all the useful information and welcome them to the community. They can then contact them about any issues if they need some extra help. Simple really, but a great example of basic community spirit, so why not consider setting up something similar in your area? Now it’s up and running Neil and the team are working closely with the city council and Cllr Irene Walsh (Cabinet Member for Communities) to make sure it keeps going and that other places can do something similar.

The idea behind these types of projects is that they are local, and every area is different. So for example in a larger urban area there may well be more volunteers willing to get involved and so it can be adapted to work in any part of the city large or small. Susie Lucas, Chair of Bainton and Ashton Parish Council told us – “We’re looking to get the Good Neighbours scheme going in a number of parishes in the north west of Peterborough. Recently 23 people signed up to volunteer from just one meeting in Bainton and Ashton. It’s really positive to see how so many people want to give something back!” It’s time for some good deeds out there folks so if you are interested with a little time to spare and you’re willing to be trained up on how it works why not volunteer to help? Alongside impressive oboe skills and a passion for heavy metal, Ed’s also best known for his hugely successful podcast Off Menu, which he hosts alongside comedian James Acaster. Tribute Night to Thin Lizzy Shows Dedication There is an added poignancy to this year’s Dedication 16 taking place on Saturday October 5 at The Parkway Club in Maskew Avenue. The annual event is now in its 16th year and is in memory of the music of Irish Rocker Phil Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy. This year though, the show is also dedicated to the memory of Phil’s mother, Philomena Lynott who sadly passed away a few months ago. Philomena actively supported the Dedication shows for her son and visited Peterborough for 10 of the years to join the celebration of his music, brought to life by local rock bands. I had the pleasure of meeting Philomena on a number of occasions and she really was a charismatic lady who once told me that her son was – “A lovable naughty boy who always had a glint in his eyes.” I could tell who he got that from. The show this year features five bands and headlining will be Black Rose (Society) from Northampton who wrote themselves into Dedication folklore 13 years ago, when they played the whole of the last Thin Lizzy Studio album from 1983, Thunder and Lightning, in its entirety plus a greatest hits set. They’re promising something special again playing a full 75 minute set. Also in the line-up are special guests Third Stone From The Sun, and Peterborough's own Thin Lizzy tribute band Lizzy On The Loose who’ve been the backbone of countless Dedication

shows over the past 15 years. There’s also Peterborough's newest Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore and Black Star Riders tribute band Star Lizzy making their debut at the event and finally, The Smarties from Northamptonshire, featuring Lewis Hubbard on lead guitar. They’ll be playing a set of classic rock covers including Thin Lizzy and Gary Moore. The evening will include a Phil Lynott, Thin Lizzy memorabilia raffle with some great prizes and all proceeds from the show will go again to the Roisin Dubh Trust which includes support to under privileged children in Ireland and helps support mothers that have lost their children at an early age. Organiser Terry Narraine, whose brainchild the Dedication event was, told me – “Due to public demand our Dedication show which was only meant to be a one off gesture back in 2003 has now reached its 16th show and following Philomena’s passing, my initial reaction was to make this the last show out of respect, but everyone has said that Philomena would have wanted me to keep the memory of Phil Lynott alive and I am pleased to announce that it will continue for the foreseeable future.” Good decision Terry, and an excellent night in store at The Parkway Club. Jezz Helllard and the Djukella Orchestra Jezz Helllard and the Djukella Orchestra are set to play their annual home town gig at the Kings Cliffe Village Hall on Saturday October 5. Jezz tours extensively around the UK and internationally but always puts this annual date in his diary. Jezz is a singer, guitarist and simply stunning harmonica player. His band, The Djukella Orchestra, play traditional and contemporary folk music, from jigs, reels and ballads to tango, rumba and even reggae. They produce a vibrant stage performance and have built a very keen following in the past few years. During this time, Jez has perfected his art and is backed by a fine band of talented musicians. Whether solo or with the Orchestra he’s played well over a thousand gigs; from the Glastonbury Festival to the North Country Fair, from New York to Taipei, Istanbul to the Iberian Peninsular, gaining fans far and wide. Quinny’s Proud to be Support Star Local musician Johnny Quinn, is reviving his solo career and is set to appear at Mama Liz’s in Stamford on Friday October 11. With influences of the Beatles, Dylan, Weller, Oasis through to Richard Ashcroft, he’ll perform some of his own material in addition to some classic covers. He is support at Mama Liz’s to the extremely popular rock ‘n ‘roll band, Proud Mary, who visit Stamford as part of their October UK tour. I asked John what the gig means to him and whether he’s excited about appearing with Proud Mary and he told me – “It marks my (long overdue) return to the stage supporting a band that have had a massive influence on my music
since I first saw them in 2001 (after signing to Noel Gallagher’s Sour Mash Label). I was lucky enough to be invited on stage to sing with them in 2014, so that was a proud moment for me. I’ve got really fond memories of performing at The Voodoo Lounge, so it feels like a bit of a homecoming for me really and I can’t wait to strum out some of the new tunes I’ve written as well as the old ones.” Of course John still appears locally as a member of The Mighty and The High who are regulars on the local circuit. You can see the band this month at The Crown, New England on October 19 and Thorney Ex Serviceman’s Club on October 26.
Ralph McTell in Stamford There’s a chance to see one of the great storytellers of the seventies at Stamford Corn Exchange on Sunday October 20, when the legendary Ralph McTell visits as part of his Hill of Beans tour. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he’s primarily a prolific and gifted songwriter. With a style that invites you into a unique world, he weaves a narrative that’s both significant and poignant. Ralph will always be associated with the classic and poignant song Streets of London which was released in 1974 and earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and tours extensively every year. Ralph will no doubt be playing that and some of his other classics like From Clare to Here along with a selection of tracks from the new album Hill of Beans which has been produced by the great Tony Visconti. New Acoustic Originals Night @ The Ostrich I’ve mentioned previously how much I enjoyed a Sunday afternoon solo acoustic gig that Rob Bull of Children of the Revolution put on and, it seems, so did Rob because he’s performing at the launch of a new acoustic originals night at the Ostrich Inn in North Street on Thursday October 3 starting at 8.30pm. Rob is one of three artists appearing on the first acoustic night at The Ostrich. The evening also features Dave Smith (Austin Gold) and Meg McPartlin. All three doing solo original sets. Hopefully it’s the first of many such events.
