BACK IN THE DAY This month the boat that’s a bar celebrates its 25th anniversary and I remember many a night snapping revellers at Charters for ESP’s Paparazzi. Most of us associate Charters with real ale but for me back in the day it was all about Southern Comfort. We'd walk into town from Stanground and Charters was our spirit stop before going onto bottled beers in the 'townie' bars. I'll always remember one tipsy Christmas Eve when I had some issues using their loo. The boat is on a slight slant but this feels more pronounced after a few drinks. Let's just say using the urinal was a challenging experience and my shoes were a bit squelchy for a few hours afterwards...

Holmes was the first boxer I remember watching as a kid and one of the last proper fighters of the heavyweight division. His left jab is still rated as one of the best in history and his 20 title defences place him third of all time behind Joe Louis and Wladimir Klitschko. He fell one short of matching Rocky Marciano’s career record of 49 – 0 when he lost to Michael Spinks in 1985. Holmes is probably best remembered for two fights, one at the start of his career and one at the end. In 1980, in a fight many boxing fans still find hard to watch, he picked Ali apart until retiring him in the 10th round. Then in 1988 Holmes was lured out of retirement to face Mike Tyson, who made sure his comeback was short-lived after dropping him three times in the fourth round. Any man who’s fought Ali and Tyson has some stories to tell. Don’t miss this one. For tickets, call Kevin on: 07872 601467.

REMEMBERING DERECK AND DEREK
THE THREE HORSESHOES W E R R I N G T O N
Last month the city lost two of its most memorable and passionate characters, both of which I’m proud to say played a part in my life.
Louise, Dave and the team run this historic public house and strive for very high standards. Cask Mark Accredited, Guiness Accredited and 5* hygiene rated. It is also the home of the Soul Lounge on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month.
when they were both taught by him between 1971 and 1974. Across the city a couple of years later, Derek Poole started working at Peterborough United. I didn’t meet him and his wife Margaret until 1998 when I joined the club’s press office.
Dereck and Edna Brown Dereck Brown, along with his wife Edna, taught Peterborough how to dance. Their dance studio opened in Millfield in 1970 and hundreds of us (including ESP’s directors!) passed through its doors until the Last Waltz a few years ago.
At first I was petrified of Derek. He had a strength in his voice that would make an opera singer proud and a presence that would scare Al Capone. He was groundsman at the time and that London Road turf was truly hallowed for him. If you as much as dipped your toe on the grass you’d get an earful from Derek, which I did on a couple of occasions!

Dereck had stopped teaching by the time me and my girlfriend decided to give ballroom and Latin a go. Edna taught us but Dereck was still very much the Lord of the Dance. During our lessons he’d be busying himself between the studio bar and office, crossing the dancefloor where I’d be attempting to learn my steps. He’d always glance over with a smile but on one occasion he shuffled over to correct my posture in ballroom hold. He told me I wasn’t leading strongly enough and stepped in to show me how it was done. I felt like God had intervened, that’s how special Dereck was. He was also instrumental in my mum and dad winning so many dance medals
Derek and Margaret Poole
But as the years went by our relationship grew and I began to appreciate Derek’s sense of humour. He was a big softie inside and a man I had the utmost respect for by the time I’d left. Derek had seen it all and I was keen to hear all about it. When I told him I was a fan of Paolo Di Canio, star of his beloved West Ham United, there was no shutting him up. We were chatting standing on the pitch at the time, you’d have never of known…
Photo: www.theposh.com
I was at that last dance and can still remember the emotion across the room when Dereck held open his hand for he and Edna to have the final dance in a studio I have fond memories of.

Louis and Max Whitlock on the podium
What an incredible Olympics it’s been for Team GB – 67 medals and one of them is coming home to Peterborough! City gymnast Louis Smith MBE won another incredible medal at his third successive Games. ESP reporter Sarah Tempest celebrates his success…

fter Peterborough gymnast Louis Smith won a silver medal at the London Olympics in 2012, we didn’t think our city could be any more proud Sarah Tempest of him. But fast forward four years to the Rio Olympics and our boy has only gone and done it again! Four years older, four years wearier; Louis’ tears on the podium as he collected his medal behind team-mate Max Whitlock’s gold left none of us in any doubt how gruelling the training and the build up had been.

Some of Louis’ highlights

2008 Louis wins bronze at Beijing Olympics
As we watched him walk out to the pommel horse that night to begin his routine, the anticipation, excitement and nerves were palpable. Anticipation and excitement because we knew what our boy was capable of, and nerves because we’d already witnessed one disaster – could Louis put the drama and disappointment of the team event, where he fell off the pommel, behind him? A deep breath, a moment to focus and he was off, what would the next couple of minutes bring? “He’ll go all out for difficulty,” commentator Dan Keatings stated confidently. “He’s had a bronze and a silver at the Olympics and I think he really wants that gold.”
He’s the first British gymnast to win a medal since 1928

And oh, we wanted it for him too. A strong start and it seemed to be going well but it was soon obvious Louis had decided to go with his steadier routine thus sacrificing those vital few extra difficulty points. Why did he do that? Would it be silver or could he scrape the gold? Or would there even be a medal at all? It was all too much to bear, especially for his poor mum Elaine who gripped her friend’s hand and hid into the sofa whilst watching back home like the rest of us.
Whilst some faceless keyboard warriors berated Louis for his ‘sour grapes’, the rest of us could see four years of pressure, preparation, dreams and focus finally erupting; a mixture of disappointment, passion and relief that he, just for those few minutes, couldn’t keep a lid on. And why should he? He’d worked so hard for that moment, just not, it must have felt at the time, hard enough but he’d won another Olympic silver medal, a fantastic achievement.
But, despite going for the steadier routine (Louis later confirmed to presenter Clare Balding that he’d planned to go all out but a wobble with his hand during the routine forced him to take the difficult, but mature, split second decision to simplify), Louis pulled off a cracking performance and his silver medal was well deserved. He’d done his country, his club, his mum and this city proud but poor Louis seemed inconsolable at missing out on his longed for gold.
When ESP caught up with Louis after London 2012, he wasn’t sure if his body would be up to the challenge of Rio. But, this time around, he’s already got his sights set on Tokyo 2020 and that elusive gold medal – displaying passion and drive that are the hallmarks of a true sportsman. We supported him in Beijing, we celebrated with him after London, we cheered for him in Rio and you can bet your rent money that ESP and Peterborough will be right behind him in Tokyo. Louis, you’ve done us proud. Again.
Louis with young gymnasts from Spiral at the launch of Bounce Trampoline Park “All of the coaches and gymnasts at Spiral Gymnastics Club are immensely proud of all the gymnasts who competed at the Olympic Games in Rio. Louis Smith has played such an important role in our sport and bringing home Olympic medals from the last three Olympic Games is an exceptional achievement. He offers our gymnasts inspiration and knowing that he is from Peterborough gives them that extra motivation. We look forward to welcoming any new gymnasts to our club that have been inspired by the Olympic Games in Rio.” Emma Payne, Spiral Gymnastics Club in Bretton
“We have all been spellbound by Team GB’s performance in Rio and delighted that our local sporting hero, Louis Smith, has once again achieved greatness on the world stage and his achievement is an inspiration to so many. Almost any sport you choose can be played in Peterborough and Louis has almost certainly motivated someone to become a future Olympian. Let’s hope that someone will be flying the flag for Peterborough!”
"Well done Louis for once again making the city proud to call you its own. You're a shining example to young people of what they can achieve with determination and perseverance. Competing in an Olympics is a huge achievement in itself but to then bring home a silver medal is just fantastic. I’m going to try and use my influence to get the Freedom of the City.”

We’re still buzzing from Louis’ success and also congratulate windsurfer Nick Dempsey who trained at Ferry Meadows in the early part of his career and came away with a silver medal from the Rio Games, his third medal win.
2012 Strictly Come Dancing Champion
Now though it’s time to turn our attention to the ‘superhumans’ in the Paralympic Games when we’ll be rooting for Matt Skelhon from Stilton. The three-time Paralympic medallist is once again part of the GB shooting squad, aiming to add to his medal haul. Matt won gold in Beijing in 2008 and followed that up with silver and bronze in London.

2012 Serpentine Green’s Xmas lights switch on
Before he headed off to Rio he told ESP he was going there to win – “I’ve got all I need within me capable of winning a gold so I’m just going to go and give it my all and see what happens. It’s a tough thing because of how tight the scoring is now and everyone’s improving every year. The margins to win a competition now are tiny. I could go and put in the best performance of my life and still somebody could beat me by point one.”

Simon Cope, Global Brand Director commented: “We are very pleased to be opening the doors to our new restaurant in Peterborough, where wagamama will continue to reinforce positive eating by using fresh ingredients, served in atmospheric surroundings. It’s an exciting time for us and we look forward to hearing what our new and valued customers in Peterborough make of our arrival.”
A fabulous new Hotel Chocolat store is now open in the Queensgate Shopping Centre, where you’ll find everything from elegant gift boxes of chocolate to your everyday chocolate fix, all made according to their mantra – More Cocoa, Less Sugar – for a satisfying cocoa hit. Their house white chocolate contains 36% cocoa – more than you’ll find in many milk chocolates – while their house milks are 40% and 50% and their house dark is 70%.
This is set to add a great new dimension to the city centre’s rapidly developing dining out quarter, so see you down there folks, we can’t wait!
CAN YOU HANDLE THE HEAT?
Looking for something unusual? For fans of a particular drink there are their cocoa-infused interpretations such as Cocoa Gin and Cocoa Beer, or their new teaolat: a light, all-natural infusion that blends herbs, spices and cacao shells for a refreshing cuppa that’s tailored to your mood. Meanwhile, foodies will love experimenting with their range of sweet and savoury condiments, including Spiced Cocoa Nib Ketchup, Cocoa Balsamic and White Chocolate & Raspberry Jam.
During a recent visit, for the first time I ordered a portion of their Hot Wings. “I must warn you, they’re VERY hot,” the waitress warned. Surrounded by friends, all watching on to see if I’d change my order, I kept what little street cred I had by saying rather smugly, “Yes, that’ll be fine.” I lost that little amount of street cred the moment I took my first bite. ‘Very hot’ was an understatement. My tongue felt like it was on fire and my nose started to run (an attractive image, huh?!). But I tell you what, they were delicious. Get down to Handmade Burger Co yourself and try them… if you think you can handle the heat! There is of course much more on offer at the popular restaurant. The menu offers more than 40 different burgers, including the New York Deli (beef, pastrami, handmade mustard & gherkin relish and mayo), and the Italian (Italian sausage, Mozzarella, red pesto and mayo). You can even order a Peanut Butter & Bacon burger.

Or, why not try a ‘Yorky’ burger – where buns are switched with Yorkshire puddings, creating Sunday roast burgers with fillings such as Beef & Horseradish and Lamb & Mint. Don’t worry, for those feeling less adventurous there is, of course, a plain burger and your classic cheese burger to choose from as well. The menu also offers chicken, lamb, skewers, and sides such as sweet potato fries and onion rings. There is something for everyone – even those who have gone gluten free! g n i i k S t e J any James Bond stunts today (‘trying’ being the key word). I slowly reversed out; chug, chug, chug (yes they have reverse gear!) a little turn and then I was ready to be released across the lake.
A few years have passed since then and whilst I may have got a little slower in that time, the jet skis certainly haven’t! These are some big powerful machines and can really fly if you’re confident enough to give them a real go – ‘WARNING ADRENALIN RUSHES CAN BE ADDICTIVE’. To be honest you don’t even need to be going full whack to have a great ride skimming along the water.
Photos: Emma Bothamley
I
recently had quite a nostalgic trip to Tallington Lakes to try reliving a bit of my youth. For a few summers in my teens I used to make regular visits there to go jet skiing with my brother Rich, our Dad and a few mates. We’d take a load of snacks and drinks and just have a chilled afternoon in the sun taking it in turns to get our adrenalin fix on the water. These have always been a great memory of mine and it’s a shame time flies so quickly and we’ve not done this for so long. So I was excited to be given the chance to get back out and have a go down there again and see if I still had a few moves.
20
www.espmag.co.uk
There are two lakes for jet skiing extending out to around 40 acres, that’s a great amount of space to race around on. So the team there sorted me out with a wet suit and impact vest and as it was a little nippy that day I was treated to a wind and waterproof jacket, snugly wrapped and ready to go.
So I’m sat on the ski keen to get started, I was given my safety briefing and rules of conduct so it was clear I wasn’t going to be trying
As it had been about 20 years since my last go (GASPS, “no way” I hear you say, “you can’t possibly be that old, you handsome boyish man you?!”) I set off taking it fairly steady to start with, easing my way into the bends so as not to throw myself off being too cocky, there was a photographer watching me after all so I had to play it cool. With each lap I pushed faster until I was giving it everything on the straights at least. These machines are awesome fun! I got tighter around the bends, threw in some moves through imaginary chicanes and had an absolute blast weaving around
bouncing along the water like that action hungry teenage lad again.
There’s a café lounge area plus the bar and restaurant just on the next lake so you could make a great day out of it too. Once done there are hot showers and changing rooms just feet away too.
I’ll certainly be rallying a gang together to head back and share the fun and I’d definitely recommend booking in to anyone who loves something a little more extreme. This would make a great treat as a gift for someone too. We all know that someone who is hard to buy for… well here you go!

Jeans for Genes Day This month it’s time to don your denim and look good to do good! It’s Jeans for Genes Day on Friday September 23 and Peterborough star Warwick Davis is just one of several celebs supporting the charity campaign which aims to raise money for a number of charities that work to improve the quality of life of children affected by genetic disorders. Peterborough’s very own Star Wars and Harry Potter actor Warwick Davis is a regular supporter and said – “30,000 children in the UK are born with a genetic disorder every year. That's 1 in every 25 births. There's so much more that can be done to help these children, from providing essential equipment to funding care workers and vital support services. That's why for Jeans for Genes Day 2016; I am asking the UK to OVERDO IT IN DENIM because if you do more, they can do more.” There are over 6,000 diagnosed genetic disorders with an estimated one in 25 children affected by a genetic disorder and therefore 30,000 babies and children are newly diagnosed in the UK each year. There are loads of ways to help fundraise with plenty of ideas on the website. Get your workmates to dress in denim for the day and make a donation, hold a denim fashion show, hold a ‘jazz up your jeans’ workshop, sponsor your teacher to wear jeans at school – whatever you do to raise cash just do it in denim! Rogen stars as Frank, a misplaced sausage who, along with his savoury friends, embarks on an existential adventure through the aisles of a massive supermarket to try and discover the real reason for their seemingly happy existence.
BRIDGET JONES’S BABY
Renee Zellweger returns for the third film in the iconic rom-com series after a 12-year hiatus,
continuing the adventures of the hapless British publishing executive as she enters her forties – and is single again after breaking up with Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy. But when she has a fling with a dashing American (Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey replacing the absent Hugh Grant) and falls pregnant, she doesn’t know who the father is – which leads to her life spiralling out of control again.
NO MAN’S SKY (PS4) This sci-fi adventure will undoubtedly polarise the gaming community – offering a mixture of ingenuity and frustration of varying degrees as you delve into the cosmos. As a space exploration and survival game – the first of its ilk with more than 18 trillion possible planets in a procedurally generated galaxy – is fine for the more patient gamer (like me who explores in sandbox worlds such as Fallout 4) who likes to investigate new landscapes between solar systems.
####
But on the flipside – if you’re a ‘run and gun’ gamer more accustomed to Call of Duty, Halo etc – then the combat mechanics are pretty simplistic and will get a bit limited for some when the novelty wears off. Your epic journey into the stars is beset with dangerously hostile creatures as you upgrade your ship, suit and weaponry across the massive pantheon of planetary systems, and that originality will be a Black Hole for some – but fortunately a Milky Way for most.

ESP’s very own ‘Maverick’ Darren Grigas takes a Top Gun flight with RAF Wittering… training regime for future pilots across the world.
A
few weeks back our lovely ESP editor asked me if I wouldn’t mind going up in a plane for a training flight with an RAF pilot at Wittering. Is this a trick question? Hell yeah of course I wouldn’t mind! So finally my Top Gun destiny had come, I feel the need, the need for speed! Well at least I could dream as much, in fact I’d be in a Grob Tutor, which whilst not an F1 fighter jet nonetheless is what every pilot starts off in and was to be a brilliant taste of the

If you’re ever driving up the A1 it’s difficult not to notice the decommissioned Harrier Jump Jet proudly parked up on the grounds of RAF Wittering. The Harriers flew their last flights from Wittering back in 2010 and the airfield was as good as redundant until early 2014 when it was finally put back to use as a flying base soon to become a world class flight academy catering to cadets and undergraduates.
After some security checks I was escorted to the training room to be briefed on how to effectively ‘abort mission’ and jump from the plane if something were to go wrong. Fortunately this is more uncommon than a white Christmas in Peterborough, in fact the chap briefing me has never known of such a need in all his forty years in the service. I then collected my jump suit, gloves and helmet. My pilot Squadron Leader Kellett was briefed on our flight agenda and we headed to the plane. We were flying in tandem with Sqn Ldr Plank and his trainee, Plank is also a former Red Arrows pilot so no doubt found these lightweight crafts are a doddle to command in comparison, and Kellet with 20 years of experience was certainly a safe bet to be sat with.
“We headed over Rutland Water which just looked like a small pond, I spotted some familiar parts of Stamford and could make out Peterborough in the distance.”
Over the radio there was a mixture of ‘chatter’ as far as I could make out but Sqn Ldr Kellett picked out all the commands with ease flicked and checked dozens of controls and dials and we took to the skies for our preplanned agenda. We headed over Rutland Water which just looked like a small pond, I
spotted some familiar parts of Stamford and could make out Peterborough in the distance. It wasn’t long before we started pulling a few moves, banking left or right and then at 4,000ft we went for the big loop, up and over and then even a slow roll so we actually flew along upside down for what seemed like
ages and as the g-force no longer pinned me to my seat I was hanging upside down just held by the belts. On the final loop I was trusted with the controls myself and held back on the stick to guide us up and over as my bodyweight shifted and I
looked up above my head to see the ground below us. Needless to say, my stomach didn’t know what was going on but we safely returned to base and landed without me needing the sick bag stashed in my suit just in case!
Navy and University Air Squadrons too. There’s an ongoing campaign to take on undergraduates for the Cambridge and London UAS, offering 50 hours of flight training as well as many more skills training over many weeks. It’s hoped that the RAF will recruit around 30% of its future pilots from these UAS and the success and retention rate shows some great results so far. So for any university students wanting to add some impressive skills to their CV’s this would be an incredible addition and even if you didn’t go on to join the RAF it would certainly carry some great merit and life skills in future.
Squadron Leaders Kellet and Plank are just two amongst a huge team of tutors and volunteers providing the RAF’s world class training, taking cadets and novice pilots from the RAF, Army,

THE BIG LRO SHOW Now, not to be confused with the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials over in Stamford, this huge event is definitely for lovers of four wheels not four legs!
This summer’s local classic car shows have all been belters and one of the last events on the calendar is shaping up to be the best of all. Peterborough’s third Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show takes place on the Embankment during the weekend of September 3 - 4 and more than 500 vehicles are expected to roll into town. Cars booked in range from Ferraris and Corvettes to Morris Minors and Ford Anglias. There are plenty of commercial vehicles registered too, as well as vintage, modified, Americana, motorcycles and scooters. Registration is still open and you can enter your pride and joy at www.peterborough.gov.uk/classicvehicle. The event is growing all the time and this year I’m told to expect double the number of cars on the Saturday (the Sunday is usually busier) and twice as many trade stands too. Councillor Paula Thacker MBE, who had the original idea for the show, told me – “The array of vintage cars and buses parked on the Embankment really is a dazzling sight. Last year thousands of visitors, young and old, had a fabulous day out and the 2016 event promises to be even bigger and better. "We'd love the show to become the biggest in East Anglia, so if you own a classic car please sign up and join us." It’s a free, family friendly show and the icing on the cake will be Vivacity’s Key Feste taking place at the same time outside the Key Theatre where you will be able to enjoy live music, dance acts and performance art with storytellers to boot. Proceeds from the sale of the show’s programme will be split between charities East Anglian Air Ambulance and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.
action and a spectacular demonstration course in the Live Action Arena. The show is home to the widest range of Land Rover clubs representing all models made and there’s the chance to buy everything from state of-theart off-road equipment to elusive old parts plus top traders to help you personalise your vehicle.

SET TO BE ANOTHER CLASSIC
In 2015, more than 18,000 visitors packed into the LRO’s Peterborough event, widely regarded as the best Land Rover show in years.
Land Rover will be attending the show again this year, hosting Q&A sessions with some very special guests. Plus there’s the chance to have a go on their 4×4 off-road course, watch a live vehicle rebuild, try your hand at bushcraft skills and with plenty of activities thrown in for the kids too, it’s going to be one almighty Land Rover party you won’t want to miss!
Once again this year there’ll be fast-paced laps, high-octane

The Land Rover Owner Show on September 17 - 18 at Peterborough Arena, the East of England Showground, is the UK’s biggest and best Land Rover show of the year.
WHITTLESEY’S VINTAGE SPECIALS If you like your vehicles retro, take a trip over to the Whittlesey Festival on September 11. They’ve lined up an impressive display of over 100 vintage vehicles with models ranging from the 1920’s Morris Oxford Cabriolet, Austins and Fords from the 30’s and 40’s together with more modern ‘specials’ ( Hot Rods). Some are unique to this event and there’s the rare opportunity to see the Gilbern which has been totally restored by retired racing mechanic David Nicholson.

NEW H&M BEAUTY Last month saw the opening of the brand new H&M store in Queensgate. I was there as the doors flew open and tons of eager shoppers piled in to claim their 25% opening day discount and see what new things they had to offer. And the beauty department certainly didn’t disappoint! In the heart of the middle of the store is an array of shelves stocked with every beauty product you could ever need. I was so excited! From makeup bags, to every makeup product under the sun, to hair products and body lotions, everything you need can now be found at H&M. I haven’t managed to get through all the products yet, there are so many to choose from… But so far, here are my top three picks of what you need to go and hunt down today! Cashmere Range The H&M Cashmere range includes body lotion, body wash, scrub and cream. It smells delicious (jasmine and sandalwood fragrances) I bought the body lotion for just £3.99. The ‘Mini Bag’ Bang on trend in metallic silver, this makeup bag can fit all your bits and pieces in and is a treat at just £2.99 Dry Shampoo I’m a sucker for a good dry shampoo – the first thing I grab on a Monday morning when I’ve got up too late to wash my hair. This one works just as well as the more pricey brands. A bargain again at £2.99.
NEAL’S YARD NEW SKINCARE COLLECTION The first place I always visit on a trip to Stamford is the Neal’s Yard shop on the High Street. Good news for all their other fans out there, they’ve just launched a beautiful new skincare collection formulated in partnership with global wellness warrior, Ella Mills, creator of the award winning Deliciously Ella lifestyle blog. (Check it out! Visit DeliciouslyElla.com and follow Ella on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @DeliciouslyElla). The new collection launches with a very cool Rose, Lime & Cucumber Facial Wash. I always look out for what new products contain – and these ones include Açai Fruit Oil which is one of the most nutrient rich fruits in the world! It’s packed with antioxidants, vitamin C and essential fatty acids which work together to help fight the first signs of ageing.

Reuzal HaiR Tonic SolD BY BaRKeRS
Introducing Reuzal Hair Tonic for the gents who want great hair… This month our friends over at Barkers have a brand new product for the gents out there. Reuzal Hair Tonic is loaded with anti-bacterial properties designed to stop any irritations and shaving rashes. It also has an oil free formula that keeps hair in place all day and unlike heavier formulas it won't weigh the hair down and restores a natural looking shine. The boys there tell me it’s suitable for all hair types and instantly creates a manageable well-groomed appearance with a nongreasy feel.

HOW MUCH HAVE YOU MOVED TODAY? Even as the summer months come to an end, it’s easy to want to snuggle back into our PJs as soon as we get home after a long day. But as we keep hearing, so much ill health could be reduced if we were to play more sport and increase our overall levels of physical activity. The Healthy Peterborough team are urging us all to do more and I’ve started this month making sure I walk 10,000 steps every day! Fitting some physical activity into your day is easier than you think. Being active is really good for your body, mind and health – and there are lots of easy ways you can get moving! Get moving now Find a way of being active that you enjoy and you're more likely to keep it up. Get your heart beating faster and your lungs working harder for at least 10 minutes at a time. Try going for a brisk walk in the park or a bike ride, or even dancing to the radio. Sit less Find ways to be more active each day. Start with reducing the amount of time you spend sitting down – get up, stretch your legs more often and do more steps each day. Take the stairs whenever you can. Active Travel It can take a little longer and you may not be able to do it for all your journeys, but you may be surprised where you can swap the car or public transport for two legs or two wheels. If you can walk or cycle instead of driving or taking public transport, it can also be good for your pocket, as well as the environment. For more helpful tips and advice head to www.healthypeterborough.org.uk or on social media follow them on Twitter @HealthyP’Boro and on facebook search for Healthy Peterborough.
TV BEAUTY GIVES A FABULIFT Sometimes the best bargains can be found on the TV screen. Local station Ideal World have launched a new beauty product this month which I gave a go. It’s part of their Fabulift range – a Hydra Boost Anti-Wrinkle Serum (£29.99). There tag line is ‘ensure a more youthful complexion within as little as three minutes!’ Although I might not have looked 10 years younger instantly (what a shame!) it is a great product and worth investing in – check out the website for more in the range as well.
HEALTHY EATING MONTH There are so many health awareness months these days, but one popped up in my calendar which I just loved, the Fruit and Veggies - More Matters Month. Apparently 90% of us don’t eat the recommended amount of fruit and veg in our diets! Check out their website www.fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org for some great new recipes to get a tastier as well as healthier diet in September. My fav included the crunchy vegetable burrito which only takes 10 minutes to prep. Perfect for an after work healthy snack.

BEING
TIME TO INTRODUCE THE SEEDS OF CHANGE…. I
t’s not that often that I’ll tout the benefits of just one food but on this occasion I have decided to. It’s a food that I eat almost daily in one form or another and one that I encourage many others to do and for many a good reason. Flax seeds or Linseeds as they are also known are undoubtedly a plant food that we should be enjoying in a variety of ways in our diet. They are high in Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) or omega-3 which is an essential fatty acid (essential as it has to come from food as our body can’t produce it). As well as ALA, it’s a high fibre food, rich in amino acids (building blocks of protein), Vitamin E, B6, magnesium folate, potassium and much more.
go off!) if left in the open. Whole flax seeds store better and can last for 3 months in an airtight container in a cool/dark place, the fridge would be ideal for this. If you really want to be careful you can keep them in the freezer (in the air tight container) for up to 6 months.
Flax meal – which is the crushed version can be added to smoothies, sprinkled over salads, added to slightly cooled porridge, sprinkled over fruit and more. Flax meal or crushed flax seeds need to be carefully stored, more so than the whole seed variety.
Flax seeds can be bought whole, ground or as an oil. Once ground they can oxidise quicker so it’s better to buy the whole flax seeds and grind them up in a grinder as and when needed.
Flax crackers – this is probably the way I enjoy flax seeds the most. I used to buy flax seed crackers to enjoy with hummus etc but the cost (at a hefty £4.50 - £5 for about 5 - 6 crackers) started to put me off buying them so I decided to make my own (I will be putting the recipe on my blog on my site). Now I always have a batch stored away to enjoy with all sorts of dips, or even sometimes broken up over a salad for that crunch.
Flax oil can be added in this form to make dressings, add to smoothies etc. Never ever heat this oil, it should be taken in its raw state as the oil can oxidise very quickly. Ways to enjoy flax…
‘...it’s a high fibre food, rich in amino acids (building blocks of protein), Vitamin E, B6, magnesium folate, potassium and much more.’ Flax seeds can be used in a variety of ways in the diet which I will explain, but firstly it’s important to buy and store flax seeds well as they can oxidise and degrade (in other words –
38

Whole seeds – added to porridge, healthy biscuits, cakes, breads etc. However some people may have bowel issues and using the whole seeds can aggravate. Firstly, check with your doctor re the bowel trouble, secondly you can either use the crushed form or soak by taking a couple of tablespoons of the seeds, put into a bowl and add enough water to cover the seeds. It’s best to leave overnight then in the morning you’ll feel that the water has a slightly slimy gel like feeling (as the seeds have absorbed the water) which can be soothing for the gut and can aid in better bowel elimination. Soaking seeds like this can also help break down phytates which allows the release of the minerals to allow us to absorb from the seed as well as helping digestion.
Enjoying flax seeds in these various ways may offer so many health benefits from – Digestive health Improved bowel elimination Cardiovascular health Hormone balance Menopausal symptoms Skin health Supporting blood sugar levels May also help protect from hormone related cancers… and much more. Is it time for you to include flax in your diet? In health, Karen www.karendevine.co.uk

Great Eastern Run Mikey Clarke
Like many of you, I was proudly watching Louis Smith do his thing at the Olympics. I must confess, whilst he was spinning tirelessly on the pommel horse, I was sat in my PJ’s eating KFC. It was probably this extreme contrast that made me think ‘I should be more active’!
M
inutes later (after consuming my chicken, of course) I looked up whether there was still time to take part in the Great Eastern Run. It turns out there is. Closing date for entries is October 7 (two days before the event), but I recommend entering sooner to beat the late entry fee – entries received on or after September 23 incur an additional £2 fee. I’m embarrassed to say that my unhealthy eating is a regular thing. Obviously, if I’m going to participate in the half marathon, things are going to have to change. No more burgers, no more extra cheese pizza… basically, no more deliciously unhealthy grub. And of course, the training has to start too. You know, it’s not too late to join me! You don’t have to be a Darren Grigas (for those familiar with our columnists) to run, though you do need to be reasonably fit and
40
www.espmag.co.uk
Darren told me – “I'm enjoying my own training and also seeing progress updates from friends taking part and we're all looking forward to enjoying the day, the course and the amazing crowds!” You’ll be pleased to know that not all of your training needs to be done solo. Free training sessions take place at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track and there’s a few more happening before the big day (which is Sunday October 9 by the way). The remaining free Wednesday training sessions are September 7, September 21 and October 5. healthy – so perhaps put a ban on the junk food too? ESP’s resident action man Darren Grigas might be one of our healthier reporters and signed up ages ago, but he’s also roped in his family too. The great thing about this event is that combined with the fun run everyone can get involved.
From taking part in the past I highly recommend running for a charity. Just when you start to feel tired and need that energy boost, the thought of the money being raised from your participation alone usually does the job. If you’re stuck on a cause to run for, the Jane Tomlinson Appeal is the half marathon title charity this year,
with Anna's Hope once again being the chosen charity for the fun run. This year, the Perkins Great Eastern Run is well on track to being the biggest ever with more than 5,500 expected to enter the half marathon and 1,500 taking part in the fun run. With thousands more local spectators spread across the route to cheer people on, it seems like most of the city is going to be there – and we can be there too! You can enter online at www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk or at the Visitor Information Centre, 41 Bridge Street. For those that have already entered, race packs are currently being sent out. If you've had a change of address since entering then email pgerentries@perfectmotion.org. Good luck and hopefully see you there! Mikey Clarke
Peterborough Air Conditioning Specialists
An affordable, high quality garage providing MoT testing, servicing, air-con refresh and more. Our top reasons to have aircon and to have it serviced regularly… • Keep Cool – Reduce the in-car temperature to a comfortable level on hot days. No need to get hot under the collar stuck in a long traffic jam with exhaust fumes coming straight into your open windows. It’s quieter and there’s no danger of insects flying in. • Keep Dry – Aircon systems condition the air and remove the moisture. The air conditioning button will control the humidity and the heater, if needed, will control the temperature leaving you free to enjoy the warmth without it being stuffy. • Keep Clear – Moisture on the glass will be evaporated rapidly giving better all round visibility much quicker than by using the heating system. • Keep Awake – The cleaner, fresher air with low relative humidity helps to reduce drowsiness on long journeys. • Keep Fresh – Air entering the aircon heat exchanger contains dust and pollen which is filtered out before reaching the cabin – great for everyone but especially those suffering from asthma or hay fever. • Keep Motoring – Fuel consumption is improved by allowing all car windows to remain closed even on the hottest days so the aerodynamics of the car remain at an optimum.
As Peterborough Air Conditioning Specialists we can: • Install complete aircon systems
• Repair and maintain air conditioning units • Re-charge and service aircon systems
We are recruiting! Qualified mechanics and technicians required. Excellent rates and benefits. UK driving licence required.

Fans wall comes to life at Posh... The action on the pitch is very much underway at the ABAX Stadium, but we’re also undertaking a lot of work off it as well. We’re pleased to announce an exciting new venture at Peterborough United that will make local people, and fans, feel closer to the club AND will help create a better academy for local kids. At Peterborough United we’re very much aware of the connection that the club has with the city. From school kids to parents, from grandparents to work colleagues, it’s about local people who put their heart and soul into supporting the team. So we wanted to give our fans something back and, at the same time, create an even better club for our supporter base. The Posh Academy is massively important to the club and our fans as it helps develop local talent, provides kids with fun and educational training, plus delivers us future stars that help to continually build our club.

Fans can buy a place on the Posh Life Wall for themselves, for a family member, or as a group. The wall is permanent so fans create a true legacy for themselves, for the club,

We will also have an app so every fan can share their stories whenever and wherever they are. It really is going to create impact at the stadium. More importantly it’s really going to impact on the lives of young people. We will be able to create an academy that defines the city and gives young people a greater fighting chance of being a success story. The big news for comedy fans this month is that the BBC begins its landmark sitcom season. Steptoe & Son, BBC Four
Ben Miller will be hosting a BBC One panel show called We Love Sitcom with familiar faces from the comedy world, and BBC Four will show a documentary – British Sitcom: 60 Years of Laughing at Ourselves, with clips from the nation's best-loved sitcoms and interviews from the stars and writers. Looking towards the future BBC Two will also showcase five new comedy pilots including comedies from Johnny Vegas and Graham Linehan, Sharon Horgan and Dane Baptiste. Perhaps most interestingly is that 'lost' episodes of Steptoe & Son, Till Death Us Do Part and Hancock’s Half Hour will be remade after the original recordings were wiped from the BBC archives. (Back in the days when copies weren't kept) and shown on BBC Four.
44
www.espmag.co.uk
Using the original scripts, each episode will be shot in a theatre-style presentation in front of a studio audience featuring actors who’ve previously recreated the scripts on Radio 4. There'll no doubt be plenty of debate about many of the remakes. The BBC have such a rich history when it comes to creating original sitcoms but it's been a long time since they found a sitcom that the nation really took to their heart. There's no other genre of comedy that's held in as much affection across the country so let's hope among the new ones there's a sitcom with the potential to become a modern classic.

The sounds of classic soul and Motown never seem to die and revival nights are as popular as ever with soul music fans from across East Anglia heading to the Braza club in March.
The music policy remains the same, soul, Motown, disco from the 60's, 70's and the 80's featuring DJ's Steve Allen, John Bradley, Andy Coulson and Mark Reveley. Tickets are £6 in advance from Larry’s Heel Bar and The Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey and by phone from Andy on 07941 629660.
90's R&B AND SOUL This night at Radius above The Solstice will see a selection of DJs serving up the finest in funk, jazz, soul, hip hop, grooves and beyond.
The next event staged by The Party is on Friday September 9 when soul music fans will descend on the Braza to dance on the best sprung wooden dance-floor in the area. The doors will open for this night of classic soul music from 8pm, with the DJ line up including Martin Topley from Boston, John Bradley and Neil Randall along with Mr Sunny Hunny soul weekend Jamie Trundle. Advance tickets at £6 are available from the Braza club and Larry’s Heel Bar in Whittlesey and Lakers Gym and the Music Box in Wisbech.
RETURN OF THE FUNK Saturday September 24 Graham Fairburn & Team are back at the Brewery Tap with Return of the Funk. FAREWELL TO THE VOW
BOWIE TRIBUTE LEADS THE MUSIC @ STAMFORD
It’s farewell time for local band The Vow! The three-piece alt-rock/powerpop band have announced their final gig at Stamford’s Voodoo Lounge on Friday September 16. The band members are vocalist and guitarist Paul Cummins, Rich Mackman on bass and drummer Steve Farmer.
I was visiting Stamford the other day, and popped into The Corn Exchange to see what shows were on the way to this excellent venue. There’s a real variety of choice available in September including The Syd Lawrence Orchestra playing Glen Miller and swing classics on Sunday September 18. Also a visit on Friday September 30 from tribute act Complete Madness. However the one that really caught my eye and should be a shoe-in for any David Bowie fans, is the appearance on Friday September 9 of Aladdinsane. They’re a local band who’ve gained huge popularity around the UK and Europe over the last 5 years, and are widely acclaimed as the best Bowie tribute in the UK. Now, because of Bowie’s sad demise, the band find themselves even more in demand. He was a British legend, due to his timeless music and many incarnations; from Ziggy Stardust to the Thin White Duke. Hit songs like – Starman, Heroes, Life On Mars, Jean Genie, Golden Years, Let’s Dance, Changes, Ashes To Ashes remain firm favourites to this day. At Stamford you can hear all these classic songs and experience the theatre through the performance of Paul Henderson and Aladdinsane. People who’ve worked with David Bowie have commented about Paul’s vocals and mannerisms stating how eerily close they are to Bowie’s. I’ve seen them a number of times and they are a top class show. Tickets are available for Aladdinsane from the box office at Stamford Corn Exchange on 01780 766455.
The Vow first formed in Peterborough in 1997 and achieved rave fanzine reviews, glowing press on a regular basis, through constant touring with various support slots (with Midget, China Drum, Janus Stark, My Vitriol and Feeder). The band continued to play shows until September 2000, but, burnt out from constant gigging and heavy recording commitments. Having reformed sporadically in 2007 and released two further EPs, The Vow have announced they’re now playing what ‘may be’ their last ever show at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge. Stamford was always a bastion of support and popularity for the band, so it’s fitting that their live career should end where it all began nearly twenty years ago. Note the ‘may be’. Many fans will hope that it isn’t the last for The Vow. It’s worth going irrespective of that though, so book tickets now on 01780 765888.
ROXY MUSIQUE
Hot on the heels of Bryan Ferry’s appearance at Burghley Park recently, Roxy fans have a chance to see tribute act Roxy Musique when they visit Peterborough’s Met Lounge on Saturday September 10. It is 40 years since Roxy Music hit the charts with Virginia Plain and in some ways there have been two Roxy Music’s. The smooth balladeers of the later years when they plundered the charts with mega hits, More Than This, Avalon and Jealous Guy – and a decade earlier the abrasive musical insurgents who penned songs like Street Life and Love is the Drug.
And like many bands of that era, they inspired generations. Roxy Musique saxophonist Oliver Whawell told ESP – “Roxy Music were ahead of their time, and like the really brilliant bands they constantly reinvented themselves. Their music crossed the path of all generations and it still does.” Roxy Musique deliver a two set show live, the first part exploring Roxy’s repertoire from the early Seventies and then the commercial hits like Avalon and Dance Away. Sounds good! If you want tickets log in to www.skiddle.com/e/12803217 or call 01733 566100.
MUSIC AGAINST RACISM GIG
A gig for a great cause is taking place at The Voodoo Lounge in Stamford on Saturday September 24. It is in aid of Love Music – Hate Racism, and features four bands coming together to raise funds for the charity. The line up through the evening is The Undefined at 8.30pm, The Expletives at 9.10pm, Satya Dub Orchestra at 9.50pm and

Risky Trick at 10.45pm to close.
The bands are all showing their support for a very good cause and hope that many fans from the area feel as strongly as they do. If you do, then tickets are available from The Voodoo Lounge on 01780 765888.

Beef, pork, turkey and local veg 2nd Sept 3rd Sept 9th Sept 10th Sept 16th Sept 17th Sept 23rd Sept 24th Sept 30th Sept Peterborough’s seen a few high profile performers over the years but certainly not as many as we’d like so this comment to ESP from Les Kidger, Director of LCC Live is music to my ears. “We’ve had a really positive response to the show. The success of this show has certainly reinforced the Embankment as a music venue and we hope to work with Peterborough City Council in the future to promote further shows in the city.” It was great to see the Embankment packed with live music fans for the Bryan Adams gig last month – and even better to hear from the promoters that they intend to bring more big names here.
The Embankment rocked out as over 9,000 flocked to see the Canadian star perform for over 2 hours and ESP was there to catch the gig. Read Stephanie Gover’s full report on www.espmag.co.uk www.espmag.co.uk
