WESTRAVEN'S GOT TALENT

On Tuesday October 3 at 6.30pm, the Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough will open the Bridge Fair on the Embankment which will then be followed by the Sausage Supper held at the Town Hall at 7.45pm. Young people and children will be working with three Peterborough artists to build an extensive eco-art installation at a new community garden in Ravensthorpe. Over the weekend, acts will perform in venues across the city. Oxjam is a month-long series of events up and down the country raising valuable funds for Oxfam and we’re welcoming the first musical extravaganza in Peterborough with open arms. The aim is to bring the community together and it definitely has something for everyone ranging from local independent bands, choirs and spoken word artists to video DJs. The music begins with a Friday night launch party at The Brewery Tap, Westgate with a performance from The Motor City Vipers. The Oxjam Peterborough Festival team are on constant lookout for volunteers, acts to perform, supporters and sponsors, so get involved!

PETERBOROUGH MODEL ON THE CATWALK FOR BREAST CANCER Sharon Brooker from Peterborough, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 will be strutting her stuff on the catwalk soon along with 31 other inspirational people who’ve also been diagnosed. Sharon and the other models are showing how you can still look and feel fabulous after breast cancer in a big fashion show in London.

GARDEN RAILWAY EVENT Enter the wonderful world of garden railways by attending the Little Puffers event. Peterborough’s two day Italian Festival this month features special guest, TV chef Aldo Zilli.

The two day festival, on September 9 and 10, is now in its ninth year making it the longest running event of its kind in the UK and the celebrity will be just one part of a huge line up of entertainment.

Aldo Zilli will be appearing on the Sunday and says – “I love supporting the Italian community all over the world as we’d travel and always bring food, drink, fashion and so on with us, so when asked about Peterborough Italian Festival I jumped at the chance to meet more of my fellow Italian expats.”

It’s organised by Peterborough's Italian Community Association and is supported by the city council and it all takes place in Cathedral Square from 12 noon to 5pm each day.

There’ll be classic pieces from Italian opera as well as wine making, Italian cakes from bakers such as La Rondini, and pizza from a range of specialist vendors.

The Mediterranean extravaganza will also feature an Italian market, confectionery, ice cream, pasta, football and boxing demonstrations, classic Italian cars, motorcycles and scooters and lots more.

Whittlesey is also throwing a party and celebrating the 10th anniversary of the town’s annual festival.

Head down on Sunday September 10 at 10am for the carnival parade and enjoy all the fun and games right through until the musical finale at 4pm.

It’s always a fantastic day out for families and all age groups so don’t miss out.

The centre of Whittlesey will be alive with a vast variety of stalls, fun activities and rides for children (many of which are free or subsidised).

If you’re a fan of classic vehicles there’ll be over 100 vintage vehicles on display.

This year there are marching bands including The Romford Drum and Trumpet Corp from Essex and The Peterborough Highland Band plus new addition ‘Cockney Pride’ the Pearly King and Queen with their band.

There’s a full day’s programme of dance including the ever popular Rug-Cutters Lindy Hop and music of all genres as well as the majorettes.

There’s free face painting and puppet shows with puppet workshops for the children, a craft fair, schools art exhibition, World War II flypast (the Dakota and Hurricane aircraft) and much more.

Get Ready for Time For Project Fest Oktoberfest Dance Music Festival This September a banging new dance music festival is about to hit the East of England Arena with over 80 artists across six arenas. Project Fest is being brought to us by DJ Danny Burch and his team so get ready to see out the summer in style, but get your tickets now!

Danny told ESP it’s been a dream of his to create a festival like this – “Peterborough showground is an iconic venue and being so central in the UK and with the A1 running right next to it we thought it to be the perfect venue and location to hold Project Fest. The East of England doesn't have an outdoor festival purely focusing on house, trance, hard dance and hardcore.

“You can expect an exciting weekend of music across multiple genres housed in multiple arenas bringing clubbers together new and old. Those coming can expect to see the UK's best DJ's in proper top tents, an outdoor stage and for those who need a break a chill out area too.

“The arenas will have top quality sound and visuals giving the clubbers a weekend they won’t forget and a full clubbing experience to take home.”

If you really want to make the most of it you can also camp and enjoy a pre-party. He hopes to make it annual and for Project Fest to grow so show your support this year and we’ll have another to look forward to in future.

A Spooky Spectacular Awaits You It might feel like the summer holidays have only just gone but it won’t be too long before the next half term so best book in some fun to keep the kids out of your hair!

Vivacity has planned some spooky spectacular Halloween themed holiday activities for children and families.

Get lost as the museum is transformed into a giant puzzle or chase the ghosts away as you play some spooky sports at Hampton Leisure Centre.

Vivacity’s popular kids club is back again this October half term (Monday October 23 – Friday October 27) with activities to keep the kids entertained in four different locations; Werrington Leisure Centre, Jack Hunt Pool, Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre and Hampton Leisure Centre.

Each day has been planned to ignite the imaginations of children between the ages of 4 -13. Book just one day or the whole week and choose from days such as Halloween Party or Viva Recruits day and many more.

The world famous Oktoberfest is heading to Peterborough for a huge weekend of traditional Bavarian entertainment, food and drink.

The most important date of Germany's cultural calendar arrives in Peterborough this year for the very first time.

The Embankment is the place to be on Friday October 6 and Saturday October 7.

It all takes place inside a huge beer tent and will showcase some of the best and authentic Oompah bands from around the world across all three sessions. Plus, of course there’ll be a large selection of traditional German foods plus those all important steins!

The Friday session is on from 6-11pm, then on Saturday afternoon the first session is on from 12 noon-5pm and then Saturday evening it’s 6-11pm.

The Autumn Food & Country Fair Don’t forget next month the Autumn Food & Country Fair (previously Autumn Show) returns to the East of England Arena on Sunday October 8.

The show’s continued to grow over the last 38 years into what has become an extremely popular one-day event, packed with everything from giant vegetables to classic cars, vintage tractors, loads of different animals – including lurchers, rats, rabbits and poultry – plus an extensive shopping and attractions area for all of the family.

Advance tickets are adults £8, senior citizens £6, child £4 and a family ticket is £20 – it’ll be slightly more on the gate.

Autumn Fun @ Sacrewell Every weekend from September 9 – 24 from 10am - 4pm the farm will be holding Harvest Weekends playing host to a showcase of local crafts and homemade goods. There’ll be all sorts of activities from a dog and duck show to toasting marshmallows around the camp fire to learning about apple pressing, milling and willow weaving.

Then on Saturday October 7 Peterborough Astronomical Society hold their biannual Star Party at Sacrewell. There’ll be telescopes to try to spot some stars and planets (weather permitting) along with informative displays. Doors open at 5.30pm, the fun stops at 9pm and you’ll need to book tickets.

eaming with pride in the lead photo the local runner is the focal point of this year’s advertising campaign for the annual half marathon after being chosen from thousands of images.

“My friend who runs for Bushfield, Helen Bloodworth took the picture and it was posted on facebook and it went from there,” explains Kay. “The kids love the fact they get to see my face every time they are in town.”

Kay is one of thousands preparing to take part, including ESP’s own action man Darren Grigas, as the countdown begins for this year’s half marathon which is set to be the biggest yet.

“I’ve always been into fitness but joined Thorney Running club in 2012, I first entered the PGER in 2013,” says Kay. “I enjoy the PGER as it’s a nice flat course with lots of support all the way round and this will be my 5th year.”

The race is gearing up to be another bumper one in terms of entries to both the half marathon and the Anna’s Hope Fun Run 5k and there's only a few weeks left to enter.

If you’ve been meaning to enter but haven’t got round to it yet, now’s the time so you can beat the late entry free.

Both races go up by £2 on September 22 and the closing date is Friday October 6 at 12 noon.

“The best advice I would give is just make sure you train properly and also have rest days as they are just as important,” adds Kay. “More importantly just enjoy it as it’s a massive achievement.”

The fact the PGER is held in the heart of the city means it’s ideal for local people to line the route and cheer on the runners, something that our own ESP entrant Darren Grigas has always said

“The support really does help. Seeing family and friends really gives you a boost especially near the end when it gets tough.”

Annette Joyce, service director for city services and communications at Peterborough City Council, which organises the race, said: "The Perkins Great Eastern Run is one of the fastest courses in the country and we get runners from near and far on the start line.

"More and more people are taking up running and we want to give them an event where they can have a fantastic day with fellow runners being cheered on by the great crowds we see all around the course."

No matter what your ability is you can make the most of the free training sessions at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track. Each training session begins at 7pm and the four remaining dates are Wednesday September 6, Wednesday September 20 and Wednesday October 4.

Statue of a Legend Big Reveal Aston has the Glitterball Moves Sorry if I’m tempting fate a little, but if there was ever a man with the moves to win Strictly Come Dancing then surely it has to be Aston Merrygold?!

Our former JLS star becomes the second local boy to appear on Strictly and fingers crossed he’ll follow in the footsteps of Louis Smith, MBE who claimed the glitterball crown in 2012.

And if Louis isn’t enough to inspire Aston to victory then look no further than our other local Strictly winner Cassidy Little, who clinched the People’s Strictly for Comic Relief title in 2015.

The wait is finally over and on Friday September 1 Peterborough United supporters will gather in their droves outside the Abax Stadium when a statue of club legend Chris Turner will be unveiled.

It’s been nearly two years in the making but this ambitious project, started by The Chris Turner Statue Fund Committee, will finally see the light of day and I can’t wait.

Chris was commercial manager when I joined the club as press officer back in the late 1990s. I was in awe of him, but then we all were. That didn’t matter to Chris, he was one of the boys and asked to be treated that way too.

He gave me the confidence to be the best and still is one of the funniest, most generous and sincere people I’ve ever met.

This tribute to Chris will be special and it’s thanks to Posh fans who’ve raised money at race nights, quiz nights, Northern Soul evenings, golf days, contributed to bucket collections, bought and sold Posh memorabilia, paid for raffle tickets, bid in auctions and much more.

All three supporters’ groups and businessmen have also contributed

financially to making the statue a reality.

Committee chairman, Adi Mowles, told me: “Lots of bigger clubs than Posh have taken a lot longer to raise the required funds for similar artworks and this is a testament to our fans’ generosity and the love and affection held for Chris. So many individuals and businesses have contributed and they will be thanked on the day of the unveiling.

“But the majority of the total money (more than £100k) collected has been raised and donated by the supporters, which is what was intended from the offset. One of the most successful ideas we had was The CT5 Club, which has seen over 140 people donating £10 per month, many of them have done so since the beginning.”

Former Posh players and managers will be at the unveiling and there will be activities throughout the day including free children’s rides and football-related games outside the main stand. There are only a few weeks to go until entries close for the Perkins Great Eastern Run and if I’m honest I keep putting it off by finding excuses – that’s until now.

Miss Peterborough, Laura Bailey has entered the half marathon and I figured since I’ve run it four times and this is Laura’s first attempt, maybe Laura needs a pacer…? It’s a tough job but someone has to help Laura, right?

It’ll be one of Laura’s biggest challenges but not before she represents Peterborough at the National Final of Miss Great Britain 2017 on September 15, at the Athena in Leicester.

Imagine Miss Great Britain competing in the Perkins Great Eastern Run eh?! Best of luck Laura and you know where I am if you need a lift to Leicester (I’ve been there four times).

Matt’s Finger Lickin’ Good?

For a minute, I put it down to my short-sighted vision but now I’m starting to think I really did see him.

Basically, I thought I saw Matt Le Blanc at the KFC drive-in on London Road. I immediately dismissed it because, well, Matt Le Blanc doesn’t simply just hang out in Fletton, plus the car he was driving was a regular Audi.

Then a couple of days later I heard a rumour that the Top Gear team had been filming in Peterborough. Damn, if I’d have known I’d have asked Matt if he thinks the 8 piece boneless feast is better value than the 6 piece bargain bucket meal. I can’t decide.

Every Little Bit Helps I’ve only been to The Ploughman in Werrington a handful of times but on every visit, I’ve come away thinking what a cracking community pub this is.

Manager Andy Simmons won a civic award for his charitable work – the cornerstone of this has been his pub – and of course The Ploughman has twice been voted CAMRA’s Peterborough Pub of the Year.

But the fight to keep it open against plans to build flats on the site is becoming harder. Everyone at ESP is in your corner Andy. Remember, everything happens for a reason…

Darts Great at Dinner Event Phil ‘the power’ Taylor is widely regarded as the greatest darts player of all time and you can meet this sporting legend at a dinner event organised by promoter Kevin Sanders.

Taylor has won 216 professional tournaments, which include 85 major titles and a record 16 World Championships. For the first time fans will be able to put questions to him and listen to his story of becoming a multiple champion.

Top Year for a Top Team Congratulations to last year’s Mayor David Sanders and his team who raised an impressive £46,636.15 for his chosen charities.

I was lucky enough to have played a small part in helping to organise some of the many events that resulted in charities Motor Neurone Disease, Salvation Army – Good Neighbours Scheme

and Royal Air Force Association all benefiting from this money.

I could probably raise just as much money by publishing a book that documents some of the memorable experiences I had working with David and his team but it’s probably sensible I just say thank you to David, Jackie, Keith, Christine, Helen and Bella – it was emotional.

Capacity Crowd Expected at Next Gables Reunion You’ll have to get to The Solstice early on Friday September 29 to guarantee entry into the next Gables reunion instalment ‘Beyond the Funk’.

Organiser Graham Fairbairn is predicting a sell-out crowd for this popular gig, which along with his Viva La Rock reunions, have raised more than £50k for charities. Sue Ryder, Cardiac Risk in the Young, Leukemia Research, Stroke Association, and British Heart Foundation are just some of the charities that have benefitted.

This is a fantastic achievement and credit to Graham for bringing back the good times and its people through music that stirs up nostalgia in all of us. His inspiration to keep staging these great gigs is simple, Graham’s driven by messages of support from the charities he’s made a difference to.

He told me: “This particular fundraiser is extra special because it coincides with an attempt (along with Nicky Welsh) to climb Mount Fugi in Japan for Cancer Research UK. Last year I hiked Mount Kilimanjaro for the MacMillan Cancer Trust and raised over £10k. To achieve something similar would be great. “It's always nice when people publicly recognise or acknowledge what you're trying to achieve. What many people are unaware of are the numerous private messages I receive from those suffering from, or those close to people diagnosed with the various illnesses I highlight. I also love the fact these nights give friends an opportunity to have a great time.”

Local martial arts champion Katie Alexander talks to ESP magazine about her work with local charity, the Sports Connections Foundation…

S

ince moving to Huntingdon from Nottingham at a very young age, Katie has gone on to win many trophies in her martial art category, Tang Soo Do, but it wasn’t all easy.

Katie started her career aged 6, and carried on until her GCSE’s before taking a 6 year gap to focus on her studies. In this time, she became the Junior National Champion at just 14 years of age. “I couldn’t believe that I actually won,” Katie told ESP, “that all the months of hard work had actually paid off, it was my biggest achievement!”

Katie feels she can really identify with the disadvantaged children that Sports Connections Foundation work with in their Inspire Through Sport mentoring programme. “I didn’t find school easy, I chose all the practical subjects as I found the conventional subjects really hard. What I didn’t realise until after university was that I was dyslexic! But Tang Soo Do gives you great discipline, which helped me 16 www.espmag.co.uk

study hard to get good grades even in the subjects I struggled with.”

Katie feels that some of the children that the Sports Connections Foundation works with, just need support and guidance from good role models. Having encouragement and support from her own family and friends, really helped her to keep persevering with her training, and with studies. “I was insecure about so many things at that age, and the kids at school can be really cruel – they didn’t know what Tang Soo Do was.

But I love Tang Soo Do as it helps me to free my mind, focus only on myself.”

“It’s such a fun charity to be involved in, but you’re helping those who really need it...”

Growing up in Huntingdon, Katie was good friends with the charity’s Founder, Junior McDougald, and started helping with admin in the charity’s Peterborough based office.

“He didn’t even realise what I did back then,” Katie remembers, “so when he found out and offered me a place as a child specialist at the Huntingdon Inspire Through Sport camp, he really put a lot of faith and trust in me!”

Katie really enjoyed being involved with the charity’s work, and watching the children enjoy themselves. “These kids felt so honoured to be there, they were very well behaved, and a lot of them were amazed that they were allowed to punch us, which was funny!”

Katie also attends the charity’s fundraising events whenever she can, “I was at the Summer Cycle last year and will be attending the Cycle Splash Dash event in Cambridge.

I’m looking forward to seeing Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn again after meeting him at the Sports Connections Foundation charity gala last year, he’s really nice!” Katie is also hoping to attend the ‘Climb Ben Nevis’ event at Serpentine Green on Sunday September 10, where the charity are using a climbing wall to reach their target of 1,345 metres (the height of the mountain) which they hope to turn into pounds to provide a Sporting Wish for a seriously ill child. “It’s such a fun charity to be involved in, but you’re helping those who really need it at the same time.”

Katie loves working with children and seeing how the smallest thing can mean the world to them. “I love the way that sport really does inspire them – bring up football in conversation and suddenly everyone becomes engaged and has an opinion!” Katie reckons that when it comes to sport, it’s never too late for anybody. “It’s great for mental health and wellbeing, and it helps to have consistency in your life – children need sport in their life, to learn about discipline, team spirit, and to be able to let off steam and have a place where they feel confident and encouraged.”

Sports Connections Foundation has a special campaign – Change 4 Children – which Katie will also be supporting. “It’s a great campaign, it basically asks for people to donate their small change every month, whether it’s 50p or £50, so that the charity always has a source of funding at the ready when it’s needed, allowing them to be proactive. There’s nothing worse than not being able to provide a Sporting Wish in time for the family of a seriously ill child.”

And finally, Katie has a quick word of advice for the younger generation; “If you enjoy it, keep doing it no matter what anyone says – even if some days you don’t feel like training, remember what the end goal is going to be and persevere!”

Katie is currently in training for the European Championships in Holland at the end of October, here at ESP we’re all hoping for first place for you Katie!

At last the new Pizza, Pots and Pints pub, The Queen’s Head, is now open. ESP went along to the launch and we weren’t disappointed, it’s a great addition to the city centre scene.

The Charles Wells pub, in the former Clarkes restaurant building overlooking St. John’s Square, offers a great selection of wines and beers so it’s good to see another pub back in the centre, but it also offers some really tasty food.

The wood fired oven ‘Large Lizzy’ produces delicious artisan pizzas in no time at all – which is good because everyone seemed eager to devour them pretty quickly!

General Manager Marcus Young and his team were in great spirits and very proud of the new venue which boasts a unique look, complete with a Queen’s head statue and plenty of quirky décor.

It’s the third of the brewery’s award-winning pub chain, Pizza, Pots and Pints – a new concept that’s based around the idea of the perfect place to enjoy a pint with friends and the food that would be an ideal accompaniment.

So whether you fancy pizza or a tasty one-pot dish of meals such as mac and cheese, Tuscan sausage stew, swordfish Thai yellow curry or stilton loaded mushrooms (with various sides), or even a Sunday roast, they have the perfect pub grub.

The opening team consist of Sam Adams, a huge beer fan, and Craig Billington, a foodie perfectionist.

They’ve been with the company from the start and have taken the Pizza, Pots and Pints idea and run with it, making sure the homemade food served alongside beers from around the world perfectly matches the quirky atmosphere.

This is the first city centre site for the chain, as Director Craig Mayes explains: “We’re really excited to share our passion of delicious Pizza, Pots and Pints with the people of Peterborough. Sam and Craig are a perfect pair and have made our pioneering Cambridge and Baldock venues a firm favourite with locals there, we’re sure Peterborough’s foodies and beer fans alike will also delight in what they are bringing to the city.

Harry’s is a contemporary stylish bar café offering classic drinks and premium beers with a modern cocktail list and a superb wine and champagne menu.

Food News STEAKHOUSE OPENING THIS MONTH The new Middeltons Steakhouse and Grill is due to open in Peterborough on Friday September 8.

A £1 million refurbishment is converting the city centre units in Bridge Street (and within St Peter’s Arcade) into the chain’s biggest steakhouse to date.

It will have dining areas across two floors – on the ground floor and at the basement level – to cater for 180 covers. There will be additional al fresco dining which will seat a further 50 diners.

Middletons Steakhouse and Grill is a growing steakhouse chain which focuses on serving prime meat in quality surroundings. As well as steak, it also specialises in a signature mixed grill, seafood, burgers, cocktails and classic desserts. All the meat served is prepared at the restaurant’s own butchery in Middleton, near King’s Lynn in Norfolk.

We are home to some incredible talent – including world-class musicians, writers and filmmakers.

This article is dedicated to one particular talented individual.

David Proud is perhaps best known for acting in TV shows such as Mikey Clarke Desperados and Eastenders – where he was the first person to regularly play a disabled part.

The local actor has also made numerous short films, with the latest being his directorial debut. Sympathy for the Lemon (which David also wrote) premiered at Edinburgh International Film Festival 2017, with it being submitted to various other festivals too. It stars Genevieve Barr (The Silence, The Fades) and Christopher Rithin (Harry Potter, The Seasoning House).

champion their work as much as possible and they deserve all the success. I hope they will allow me to use tracks in the future as their songs have such emotion and for a filmmaker that’s the type of music you really want.”

Fresh off the back of their appearance at the local Green Meadows Festival, and with a new album ‘Details’ just out, Glock from The Candle Thieves told me they’re delighted to be linked in with David’s project, “To have our song feature in David's film is a total privilege for us. We're very proud to be a small part of his awesome project and wish him every success with the release.”

So what’s next for David? “For me it’s time to step up a gear and I’m now focussing completely on longer feature films. I am having to take a little break from working behind the camera though, as I have started filming on a new series that I can’t talk about yet which has me booked till the end of the year. As soon as I can talk about it, I will of course be in touch with ESP.”

David allowed me to watch his film, which I loved. It flowed nicely, the dialogue was believable and well-acted and as for the cinematography – the local filmmaker clearly has a great eye for detail. Every shot was beautifully filmed.

Even the music featured in the film involves local talent. “The music is by the local band The Candle Thieves as I went to school with the talented Mr Shiels aka ‘The Glock’, and I was also in a different school band with him back in the day,” David said. “I played drums but I was sacked by him and the lead singer for not turning up to rehearsals in my lunch hour. However, the reason I didn’t turn up is that I was chatting up a beautiful girl called Amy each lunchtime. She kept distracting me away from the band and there was just something about her that made me go all giddy. I did however get the last laugh as that same girl went on to become my wife last year. Was it worth being kicked out of a band? Hell yes!”

David continued, “I have always been a fan of The Candle Thieves and they are insanely talented. I really want to

SUPERDRAMA We have some really great amateur dramatics and theatre groups in this area so let us introduce you to a new group taking to the stage promising us some SuperDrama….

SuperDrama Productions are a newly formed, small group of like minded lovers of theatre, who enjoy putting on great drama performances. All members of the group have many years of experience in many drama productions, with other well established successful amateur drama groups.

Tracey Brittle from the group told ESP – “We have come together with two aspirations in mind; firstly to support Peterborough & District's cultural ambition by bringing great quality performances to those who love a good night out at the theatre and secondly to support local charities by gifting all profits made from our performances this year and also from all future productions.”

They’re performing at the Key Theatre Studio in October with the comedy play 'Relatively Speaking' by Alan Ayckbourn based on misunderstandings and somewhat complex relationships.

Tracey continued– “Progress for our first performance is very strong with the strength of acting in the team promising a lively performance.

“We are also delighted that Sir Alan Ayckbourn himself is supporting our production. He has personally signed copies of the script for us so that we can raffle one off at each of our performances.”

Behind the scenes SuperDrama have been supported by Peterborough Regional College who’ve been helping build a website and manage the group’s social media campaign.

“We hope that the excitement we have for this new group will be infectious and that more local people will want to get involved,” says Tracey. “We still need help in our production set up and would welcome a little extra local sponsorship. Even the smallest amount of funding will help to make a huge difference.”

They’re also keen to get new talent on board ready for their next production next year so if you fancy getting involved in

anything from acting to working backstage all ages and levels of experience are welcome.

The show runs from Tuesday October 10 – Saturday October 14 at 7.45pm, with a Saturday afternoon matinee at 2.30pm.

Tickets are just £10 and all profits from the performances will be supporting local charities, this year it’s for the local Macmillan cancer charity.

ESP last chatted to former Corrie actor Steven Arnold when he was appearing in panto at The Cresset and he seemed a thoroughly decent bloke.

W

hen he called us up at the ESP office to ask if we’d help him in his support for a local charity event, he proved his nice guy credentials once again.

Steve’s patron of Phoebe Research and is busy recruiting runners for the charity’s first ever fundraising run at Rutland Water on Sunday October 1.

Zoe Crowson founded The Phoebe Research Fund in 2015 to fund research into a possible cure for Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa which her daughter suffers from. Steven originally met Zoe when she went to see the panto and asked Seven to record a video message for the charity. They kept in touch and he ended up being a big supporter.

Steven says he felt compelled to help, “It was just the story that she told me – she’s a lovely lady and Phoebe’s a lovely little girl – it just pulled at my heartstrings I guess. Nobody’s really aware of EB. “I’ve worked with various charities but it’s the smaller ones I tend to aim for as they need the help the most. The nice thing is you know with this charity that every penny is actually going straight into the research.”

The course starts and finishes at Sykes Lane, taking in Whitwell and the Dam. The 5k course is an achievable distance for all

ages and abilities.

You can choose to run, jog or walk your way around the course so you should be done within an hour depending on how fast you choose to go.

Steven will be there on the day cheering everyone on and handing out medals and is urging more people to get involved and put their Sunday to good use walking/jogging in some beautiful countryside.

The run’s hosted by Rutland Radio and entry’s £10 for adults and £5 for kids – it’s a 5k fun run so no need to be super fit, just play your part in raising some vital cash to find a cure.

Jeans for Genes day on Friday September 22 is a day to wear your jeans at work, school or wherever in return for a donation which will help change the lives of children across the UK. The anticipation is off the chart for this big-screen movie remake of the popular 1990 miniReleased series – based on Stephen King’s infamous novel – and has led to the trailer getting the most views in the first 24 hours for any film of all-time.

This production, which is refreshingly devoid of any notable A-list talent, is being targeted as a two-part horror ‘duology’ – just like the mini-series – with the first instalment going by the moniker of ‘The Losers’ Club’.

This so-called club are a group of outcast pre-teens, who team up to fight against an immortal shapeshifting entity – usually in the guise of Bill Skarsgard’s (Atomic Blonde) terrifying Pennywise the Clown – responsible for the disappearance of children in their hometown of Derry, Maine, on America’s East Coast, in the Summer of 1989.

The gathering is led by Jaeden Lieberher’s Bill Densbrough, who has more reason than most for revenge on Pennywise – with the monster being responsible for the death of his young brother Georgie – as he joins forces with his overweight pal Ben Hanscom (Jeremy Ray Taylor) and the only girl in the group, Sophia Lillis’ Beverly Marsh, among others, as they’re forced to confront their own personal demons in the process.

Let’s hope with the hype machine at maximum that director Andy Muschietti – who’s got horror previous with Mama – hasn’t been clowning around...

WANT TO BE A RECORD BREAKER? Stamford-based children’s brain tumour charity – Anna’s Hope – is giving you the opportunity to be a Guinness World Record breaker at Queensgate Shopping Centre on Sunday September 24.

Queensgate’s charity of the year will attempt to break the world record for the ‘Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Fairies’ in one place, which currently stands at an impressive 871.

Men, women, boys and girls can all take part but you must wear three crucial fairy items: a tutu, wings and carry a wand.

Founder of Anna’s Hope, Carole Hughes, whose charity logo is a fairy told me: “By dressing up as a fairy and coming to the event you will not only (hopefully) become a world record holder and have some fun but you will also help raise awareness of brain tumours, which is the country’s biggest cancer killer of children and young people.”

Fairies will need to be at Queensgate Shopping Centre from 8am and no later than 9am where you’ll be counted into the world record attempt area in St John’s Square (outside Primark). Car parks in Queensgate will be open from 7.30am.

The record attempt should be completed by 10am and there’ll be entertainment and activities taking place afterwards.

Darren O’Sullivan, local author Darren O’Sullivan is a Peterborough author who has a lot to write home about.

His debut novel Our Little Secret is a Mikey Clarke psychological thriller set in Peterborough that’s been published by Harper Collins and reached no.1 in the iBook chart!

Our Little Secret follows the story of Chris.

He is waiting to join his wife, his poor Julia who was murdered 10 months before. A murder that’s a secret as Chris has been told – ‘If you tell a single soul, I’ll kill everyone you love’.

The 10.47pm train is on its way. It doesn’t stop at the small station he’s standing at. As always, it’s deathly quiet and when it passes through he plans to step under it. He hopes she will be waiting for him. All he has to do, is wait. But a few minutes before its due, Sarah, a woman who’s at a crisis point in her relationship, and her life, steps onto the platform. He can’t do what he set out to do...

Already, I’m hooked!

I spoke to Darren about his book, which has received a best seller status on Amazon, with it being sat inside the top 100, whilst also reaching no.1 in the iBook national chart.

I wondered how obvious it was that the story was set in our city? “Very much so,” he 32 www.espmag.co.uk

told me. The story starts at March train station but goes back to Peterborough, where Chris lives. “I have tried to stay as true as I can to the city where I live. I love Peterborough and despite it being a vibrant city it’s still a little bit of an unknown. Almost as if it’s a secret also.

Using our home city as the backdrop over London (where it was originally set) seemed to fit the themes within the book. Our city hospital, the shopping centre, the river all feature within this book.”

It took Darren 5 years to write the book, with almost a full re-write – something that sounds like an emotionally draining process.

He told me, “Writing this book has been hard, very hard, and to begin with it wasn’t a book at all! Five years ago it started as an idea for a play, then once it was finished I realised it was terrible. But the characters weren’t and their voices might be stronger within a novel rather than for the stage.

“The first story took me over three years to write and I sent it out to the publishing world only to get dozens of rejections. Lots coming back saying I had written the wrong genre and it would work better as a thriller.

“After sulking for about a month I began again and Our Little Secret was born. After the re-write I faced more rejections and just at the point where I began to question if I was supposed to be an author a lovely editor called Hannah rang from Harper and within a week

they had signed me!

“I’m a real believer that with the right attitude, a lot of gratitude and real hard graft anything is possible.”

We’ve not seen the last of our local author, Darren’s been signed by Harper Collins to write two more thrillers for them!

A Family Affair 1986. I remember it well. A year of firsts for me. My first kiss (I hoovered her face), my first Electro album (I still have it on vinyl) and my first Wimpy party (I was sent home for eating all the other children’s chips).

But it was also the year I set eyes on a Renault 5 GT Turbo. What a car. It was among the hot hatch elite along with the superb Peugeot 205 GTI and I dreamt of one day owning one.

Fast forward to 2016 and I’m chatting bikes and cars with Balderston top sales guy Dave Cunningham. He mentions he had a mark II VW Golf GTI. Respect. Then he goes on to say he sold it to make way for a restoration project for a cracking little Renault first registered in 1986.

At this point I begin to grin like a Cheshire cat.

Surely, he’s referring to a…it can’t be…yes, it must be a Renault 5 GT Turbo!

Err, no. Dave was all excited about his Renault 4 GTL. I remember thinking, how could Renault produce such diverse cars in the same year?! I must admit, I was no Renault 4 fan but gave the man respect for his passion to bring the car back to its former glory.

Then, earlier this year, something beautiful happened to me. I saw Dave’s beloved Renault 4 and fell in love with it – and more so because of the car’s story.

Affectionately known as ‘Reggie’, Dave’s GTL is one of the last ones to have been registered in the UK. Way back when Dave worked as a mechanic at Spalding’s Renault dealer, Swan Street Motors, he carried out its pre-delivery inspection for the car’s first owner, Dave’s mum.

Over the years Reggie has also been owned by Dave’s wife Wendy and now himself, having spent only 34 www.espmag.co.uk

seven years outside of the family.

Reggie came back into the family’s ownership in 1996 and he’s only covered 97,000 miles.

Twenty years later Dave decided to give his Renault a new lease of life (to coincide with Reggie reaching the grand old age of 30) and knowing that under the body things started to rapidly rust away, he went down the route of a body-off restoration.

He told me: “I commissioned Simon Pocklington of Renault Reborn in Louth to do the work. The chassis was completely stripped, repaired and all rusted parts replaced with new metal painted and undersealed. A complete respray back to the original Danube Blue was carried out after fitting new front wings, rear quarter panels, windscreen, heated rear window and bumpers.

“The engine was in good working order, so didn’t require much attention. It was cleaned and upgraded to electronic ignition. The carburettor was rebuilt, a new clutch was fitted, all break lines and fuel lines were replaced and a new radiator and drive shaft were also purchased. The seats were retrimmed with original covers from salvaged Renault 4’s. The whole restoration took six months.

“Reggie is part of the family and not once did we consider throwing the towel in. We were keen to restore him to original condition, including refitting the red and white pin stripes that I applied when mum bought it.

We didn’t want to over-restore him, as that wouldn’t have looked right.”

Reggie’s certainly got a bit of character about him and Dave knows I’m a big fan of his retro colour. But what’s most striking is that you just don’t see Renault 4’s anymore and this for me makes the car all the more special. He’s quickly become a bit of a star at local car

shows too - one particular admirer was smitten.

“I took him to the show at Bourne and some guy really wanted to buy him but of course the answer was no. What I love best is the attention he gets at shows over poster cars like Ferraris. Everyone seems to have a story of owning a Renault 4 or knowing someone who has owned one. Reggie always brings a smile out of people and we get very positive comments about him.

“

Talking to Dave more and more about Reggie, I can see that he clearly has a particular interest in Renault as a manufacturer. The French brand isn’t necessarily a make that most of us would have a passion for and it’s nice to know a guy who knows a thing or two about French cars. But where did this all start?

“My passion for Renault stems back to my first jobs being with Renault garages. My parents always owned Renaults too, in fact my other vehicle is a Renault Kangoo van. A special moment for us and Reggie was when we were invited to Silverstone for the 50th anniversary of the Renault 4, which was part of the Renault World Series events. Reggie got to do a parade lap of the circuit and

“He doesn’t get used much now, but I try to give him a run at least once a month and he does roughly 500 miles a year. Driving Reggie is challenging, as he doesn’t accelerate like modern cars and visibly rolls through corners, usually to the distress of passengers and following vehicles! There are no seat belts in the rear (he pre-dates them), so

And further proof that Dave’s a Renault man through and through. I asked him if money were no object what one car in the world would he want to own alongside Reggie?

“It would have to be a Renault Alpine A110.” Not a Renault 5 GT Turbo then Dave? Damn.

Don’t say NO to the gas molecule that does us good...

NO is a gaseous substance that is produced in the lining of the blood vessels by way of many chemical/enzyme reactions which is said to support – Lowering blood pressure Reducing the risk of sticky blood Lowering inflammation Helping to deliver nutrients to the cells Supporting blood flow to the veins Improving sexual function Improving circulation and much more To provide the natural production of Nitric Oxide in our bodies, we go once again to plant foods. Whilst there are many ‘supplements’ out their claiming to boost NO levels, you really do need to be careful what you’re taking.

Firstly you cannot get NO in a supplement, it is a gas after all. However, many supplements contain precursors (something that will help to form NO), some of which are better absorbed than others, also the long term use of supplements with isolated nutrients are never going to be a good thing as this can create imbalances with other nutrients long term.

Plant foods contain natural nitrates which we eat, once we’ve ingested them it’s said that our body has an innate way to convert these into nitrites then into Nitric Oxide (NO). These nitrates mix with our healthy oral bacteria, then with our stomach acid and then via processes in the gut which then produces Nitric Acid that we need for health. It is my own observation here that so many people use chemical mouthwashes which may kill off our friendly oral microbes and also use too many antacids etc which may have a blocking effect on this natural process.

Every year around 100,000 young people take part in the National Citizen Service gaining valuable life, social and business skills and having a brilliant time in the process too, the kind of experiences that make lasting memories, life skills and friendships.

We’re really privileged to have the Peterborough Open Awards Centre running the NCS courses for 16-17-year-olds in the Peterborough area, offering invaluable outdoor learning activities.

I was invited to meet the Peterborough group halfway through their four-week course.

Their first week had been at Hilltop Outdoor Adventure Centre in Norfolk and was about stepping out of your comfort zone, the group took part in activities such as abseiling, archery, climbing, high ropes courses and many more. Team leader Steve

Whilst chatting to the group, it was clear that they’d bonded quickly through their experiences and were all very close despite most having only met two weeks earlier. At the end of week two after having weathered a couple of freakishly wet days, they were still in great spirits, so much so that when an ITN news crew turned up to do a feature called ‘Where has the summer gone?’ they decided not to include the NCS group as they

were too positive for the article.

The final two weeks would involve planning and taking part in a Social Action Project which will benefit the wider community. For this group, it would include fundraising towards the renovation of the resource centre at Newark City Farm to provide a positive learning environment for young people.

In addition to this, they’ll be carrying out a tree survey at Ferry Meadows which will include the first ever survey of Bluebell Wood and Lynch Wood. As part of this project they’ll be designing a trail for visitors to the park to follow and the NCS participants will also gain their John Muir Conservation Award. So, look out for that on your next visit to Ferry Meadows!

NCS is a fantastic opportunity for teens to take part in some adventurous activities and get out of their comfort zone. It’s estimated that the team from Peterborough Open Awards Centre will take part in over 780 hours of voluntary work which will have a lasting impact on the city for years to come.

The programme runs each summer and unbelievably costs no more than just £50 for the four weeks as it’s primarily a government-funded initiative that brings together schools, community organisations, businesses and individuals to build a stronger and more cohesive society.

It even has the endorsement of one Sir Richard Branson, who says of the project – “Programmes like NCS are a good way to develop confidence and leadership skills to encourage a new generation of business and community leaders.”

I always love speaking to players that seem to have a genuine buzz for playing for the football club. I think you can tell sometimes when individuals are just providing a quote that they think people may want to hear rather than what they truly feel – ‘I am happy to be here’, ‘I am delighted to sign for this club’ – there are countless examples.

H

owever, after speaking to one of our summer arrivals, Steven Taylor, it is blindingly obvious that he is actually thrilled to be back in an English dressing room again and he is loving life at the ABAX Stadium after penning a two-year contract.

With over 200 games under his belt in the Premier League, Steven Taylor’s arrival was quite rightly described as a ‘coup’ by the management and after a couple of excellent displays at the heart of the defence, it’s already looking like a match made in heaven.

“I walked into the dressing room at the final whistle at Bristol Rovers in my first away league game for the club and you saw how happy the lads were and they thoroughly deserved to be pleased because it was an absolute pleasure to be part of that performance against a good side. I felt sorry for the Bristol Rovers defenders at times because we were very good going forward, the pace and work ethic of the team was tough to play against.

“I thought my centre back partners were superb, they were throwing themselves into challenges, putting their bodies on the line and that is what you need to do. I have played with some defenders at a higher level that are not as brave as these lads are. They are still young as well, they have a lot of potential as their understanding and reading of the game is excellent.”

The former Newcastle United man admits it’s an ‘exciting time’ to be a part of a vibrant Posh squad and believes he is being managed the right way by boss Grant McCann and Head of Physical Performance Ben Mackenzie.

“The sports science guys here are very good,” says Taylor. “Ben has worked at St. George’s Park and has a wonderful CV, he knows what he’s doing and they have a lot of data from match days and from training sessions. It’s really enjoyable though, I’m grafting hard and I feel fit and I’m just buzzing for match days.

“When you’re not involved, if you’re on the bench or not part of an 18 you can get forgotten about. When you are in the starting line-up, you are part of it and that is what it’s all about for me. I love the game and I love the challenges. When I was nine years old at Newcastle, my hometown club, I don’t think many people would have expected me to get through into the first team.

“I had six or seven centre backs in front of me and people were telling me to go elsewhere and then work my way up, but I relished the challenge. I wanted to succeed and I worked hard to achieve what I wanted to. I went to America to play games, I played three games a week out there and proved that I was ready.

“I really enjoyed my time with the Portland Timbers,” he recalls, “they were great with me, they gave me match time and they also worked me hard on the training ground. I spent four months in Tenerife in the summer doing a fitness programme and I genuinely am feeling great at the minute and I’m buzzing to be part of this squad.”

It’s early days, but I think Tayls has all the hallmarks of becoming a fans’ favourite very quickly. I think it could be the best bit of business done in the league to get him to the club.

Here’s Jimmy!

We’re blessed with a great live comedy circuit in this area and we’re pleased to see the laughs keep coming. The various comedy clubs attract good crowds plus we’re seeing more and more big names appearing on our doorstep so check out some stand up near you!

One of the biggest stars is Jimmy Carr who just loves the Peterborough audience and puts on numerous appearances at the Cresset to satisfy demand for his controversial humour.

He might often cross the line but it seems we just can’t get enough of him and his Best Of tour is proving so popular he’s added another date on Tuesday September 19.

“This one’s slightly different as obviously most of the jokes were already written – all I had to do was choose my favourites and then try and remember them!” says Jimmy.

Despite being a Best Of tour he promises it won’t be the same show every night – “Obviously there will be a lot of written stuff, but I like to find a balance between the guaranteed laughs of jokes I’ve come up with in advance and the off-the-cuff stuff. I think on a good night it is 80/90% of jokes that I have written and am performing to the best of my abilities. But the best bits always involve the audience, the bits where I don’t know what’s going to happen or where it will lead.”

Jimmy came into stand-up comparatively late at the age of 26 after finding his ‘very cushy job in marketing’ failed to satisfy. Having enjoyed huge success with both stand up and TV since then which does he now prefer?

“It’s an odd one for me,” he admits, “they feel very distinct. Making television is collaborative – being the host is great because there's a whole group of people working to make you look good.

Live stand-up is very different. You're on your own and that can be stressful. You’ve got more freedom though. With TV, even if it’s late night, you’re ultimately being beamed into people’s homes, sometimes uninvited. With a live gig, people have paid to see you. That allows you to push it that little bit more.”

Peterborough-based band Flashback Photograph have had a fantastic summer. After playing in front of huge crowds at Camp Bestival they’re set to play Bestival this month and are recording a new album.

T

he folk-rock band, formed of lead singer Gary Ward, drummer Adam Mansfield, and bass player Matt Worthington, are set to play the biggest gig of their lives at Bestival.

It’s a dream come true for lead singer Gary Lee Ward who told ESP he started the band in 2011 and they’ve been working hard ever since – “We’ve had a few incarnations with different members coming and going. But it was 2015 when we actively started hitting the scene, making sure we played more regularly and supported local venues and going further afield too.”

Spreading their wings a little proved worthwhile as it was down the road in Cambridge that a break came. “After playing a few shows in Cambridge, we were asked to play Strawberry Fair on the Cambridge 105 stage,” says drummer Adam Mansfield. “It was a fantastic event and a local DJ happened to be watching us at the time. He runs a stage at Camp Bestival and Bestival and asked us if we wanted to play. Naturally we accepted!”

Bassist Matt Worthington is still buzzing about it – “Camp Bestival was amazing – we had a great time, got a great reception to our music and met some other fantastic musicians too. So we can’t wait to play Bestival, which promises to be even bigger.”

They’ll be playing at Bestival on September 9 and 10, but don’t plan to ease off after that.

“We plan to keep the momentum going,” adds Adam. “It’s important we capitalise on this moment, but also enjoy this moment. We have some interesting gigs in the pipeline, so we plan to stay as busy as we can.”

Even more of us will get to hear what the boys can do in future as they revealed they’re about to go into the studio to record their first album.

“It’s been a long time coming, really,” says Gary. “We’ve had a couple of EPs, but we’re taking our time with the album. There’s a lot of music we could include, so we’re in no rush with

it. It may take a while but it will be worth the wait.

“It might be a cop-out, but I think our music stands out. We do wear face paint in the style of Mexican candy skulls to grab people’s attention at gigs, plus it’s good fun, but ultimately if the music isn’t any good then it’s just a gimmick.

We’re being invited to play some great gigs and events, so hopefully that’s a good indication we’re doing something right!

“I write all the lyrics and music for the band,” Gary continues, “but a lot of my inspiration for that comes from family, friends and life events. I think many musicians write stuff that is personal to them and I suppose I’m no different. In terms of style, I love Mumford and Sons and Johnny Cash.”

Having made their mark locally and further afield, we wondered what the band thought to the local live music scene and if they thought it needed to change.

“Obviously, there are some great venues that support local artists, which is great,” says Adam. “But we could always do with more of them – Peterborough could do with more venues to help bands get started and help build a local fan base and get the experience they need to branch out regionally.”

Matt adds – “It would be great if more venues were open to paying for original music.

It’s expensive to ‘be’ a musician, so any support from venues actually helps keep the local music scene going.”

Jethro Tull Star From The Jam are @ Cathedral Back!

Rock legend Ian Anderson, frontman of Jethro Tull, will be performing a Christmas concert at Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday December 16 at 7.30pm.

I went to see Tull a few years ago in a sell-out concert at the Broadway. I also saw them in their heyday in Birmingham, and both times they were superb.

Jethro Tull were formed in 1968 and, with frontman Ian Anderson, have released 30 studio and live albums, selling more than 60 million copies worldwide.

Undoubtedly the major focus of their music is Ian Anderson, who’s very 48 www.espmag.co.uk

charismatic and is famed as the man who brought the flute to rock music (and performing on one leg). He has a large and enthusiastic fan base, and still maintains a busy international touring schedule, which in recent years has concluded in December with a short series of Christmas concerts in cathedrals.

To compliment this, thanks to the musician’s generosity, the proceeds of these concerts goes entirely to the cathedral concerned. Ian Anderson is a self-professed non-believer, but nonetheless claims a huge affinity with the traditions of Christianity and this is his way of showing his support.

On December 16 it’s the turn of Peterborough Cathedral to benefit. He and his band will perform some of the more festive numbers from the prodigious Jethro Tull back catalogue, alongside other Christmas music and readings. There’s also the promise of the odd surprise guest joining the line-up (guests at previous Christmas gigs have included the likes of Ade Edmondson, Marc Almond and Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden). Members of Peterborough Cathedral Choir will be making an appearance too.

Coming to the Cresset on Friday October 6 is a concert any self-respecting fan of The Jam will not want to miss. Original Jam bassist Bruce Foxton is returning to Peterborough with his band From The Jam. The Jam’s final studio album was The Gift, and was often cited as one of the band's finest albums.

The Gift featured the singles Town Called Malice, Just Who Is The 5 O'Clock Hero and Precious. Now 35 years old, From The Jam, are taking this album out on the road and bring it to Peterborough as part of their UK tour.

Bruce, along with Russell Hastings will perform this incredible album in its entirety in this one-off, never to be repeated concert. They will no doubt add to this with many of the classic Jam hits such as Down In The Tube Station At Midnight, Going Underground, Town Called Malice, The Modern World and many more. The band has gained a reputation for the kind of incendiary live performances that sealed the reputation of The Jam all those years ago. Indeed the band played to a packed out Cresset audience in June 2016, securing themselves as a firm favourite on the touring circuit.

This is a fully standing show and support comes from Leeds based live Northern Soul band Samuel S Parkes.

Scooted and Booted Gig Back To Basics Scooter Club (BTBSC) are holding an End of Season Bash at the Lime Tree Pub on Paston Lane on Saturday October 7. And they’ve chosen a band who brings the perfect type of music for Scooter fans. They are Scooted and Booted.

Back To Basics Scooter Club was formed by a group of friends in the Peterborough area who have an interest in the local scooter scene and have grown in membership by staging scooter related events all through the year but particularly in the summer. Hence an ‘End of Season Bash’.

We Love to Boogie The music of Marc Bolan with his band T.Rex, has endured despite his sad demise in the late seventies. Marc was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era, With Bolan's special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs throughout the 1970s including Telegram Sam and Metal Guru, we lost a potentially great star of his generation.

I have seen T Rextasy a couple of times and have another chance on Sunday October 1 when they visit the Key Theatre. Their 20 year plus career ironically out lives Marc’s very own T.Rex. T Rextasy is now accepted as one of the world’s few official live tribute bands dedicated to Marc Bolan, and the only band endorsed and approved by Marc’s family, estate and original ex-members of T.Rex. The band’s been described by many as beyond the boundaries of tribute.

Of course Marc’s songs re-appeared to a new generation in the film, Billy Elliot, and therefore it’s a rock and roll concert for all ages.

Former Westlife frontman Shane Filan has announced a major UK tour for October 2017, and it includes the Cresset in Peterborough on Monday October 9.

This tour follows the recent release of his new album Love Always and the concert is bound to see him perform a number of Westlife favourites as well as his own recent tracks.

Shane told ESP, “I am really proud of Love Always and it is going to be exciting to bring the new songs to the stage, alongside of course some old favourites. It is always great to see the fans who are so supportive.”

This obviously includes his Peterborough fan base because he played a very popular sell out gig here at the Cresset last year and is keen to return to the city.

Westlife were one of the world’s most successful bands of the last few decades, scoring multiple Number Ones all over the world, and this year’s Cresset appearance, once again, gives Peterborough fans the opportunity to see him doing what he loves best; entertaining the crowd and singing from the heart.

He’s supported on the tour by Australian Guy Sebastion who’s very well established the other side of the world, after winning Australia’s first ever ‘Idol’ in 2003. Guy’s decade and a half long career has seen 42 platinum and three gold certifications, and sold three million in combined sales with a string of arena tours. His 2013 single Battle Scars went platinum in the US, with Guy in fact being only one of a few artists in Australian music history to ever achieve this.

Guy now wants to achieve in the UK. He commented, “This is a brilliant opportunity to show the UK who I am and what I love doing best.

Shane is a fantastic artist, and I am full of admiration for his career history as both a solo performer and as the lead singer of Westlife. I am absolutely thrilled to be joining him on the Love Always Tour.”

R.I.P Mark

I, like all those connected with Peterborough’s live music scene, was shocked to hear the very sad news of the death of Mark Perks, lead singer of The Rocket Dogs.

He was only in his forties, and got married to wife Karen just two months ago.

Everyone who saw The Rocket Dogs perform will know how passionate and enthusiastic Mark was about the band’s

performances. He saw his role as frontman as being the entertainer and his bandmates reflected this in their posting on Facebook: ‘The Legend, The Ultimate Entertainer, The True Rock Star and the man that would always make you smile.
