HEAD COACH BIO Entering his 19th year directing the Spartan program, head coach Tom Izzo has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments, including the 2000 NCAA National Championship, seven regularTOM IZZO season Big Ten head coach Championships, three Big Ten Tournament titles, six Final Four appearances, eight National Coach of the Year awards and a Big Ten-best 16 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
between 1999 and 2010, becoming just the fourth school in college basketball history to do it in any 12-year span, including just the third since the tournament field expanded to 64 teams in 1985. Izzo also became just the second coach in NCAA history to reach four Final Fours in his first 10 years of coaching, joining Ohio State’s Fred Taylor, and is just the third coach in NCAA history to appear in six Final Fours in a 12-year span, and just the second since the tournament expanded to 64 teams. His six Final Four appearances rank tied for sixth all-time, fourth among active coaches and first all-time among Big Ten coaches, having most recently passed former Indiana head coach Bob Knight.
These accomplishments, however, are not what make Izzo one of the best in the game, but rather it is his insatiable desire to accomplish more.
Through 18 seasons, Izzo is already one of the most successful coaches in Big Ten history. His .688 winning percentage in Big Ten games ranks third all-time among league coaches with at least 10 years of service, while in all games, Izzo ranks fourth (.712). With 209 conference victories, Izzo ranks sixth all-time. With a win over Purdue on Jan. 5, 2013, Izzo became the thirdwinningest coach in Big Ten history, trailing only Knight (662 wins) and Purdue’s Gene Keady (512 wins) for most wins at a Big Ten institution.
With a career record of 439-178, it’s easy to see that Izzo knows how to win, but he also knows how to win the right way. In his 18 years directing the Spartan program, 82 percent of his players who completed their eligibility also left with a degree. In the last 14 years, 39 Spartans have received their undergraduate degrees. In 18 seasons, Izzo has returned Michigan State to national prominence, placed his name in the NCAA record books and become a leader among college basketball coaches. Izzo’s 439 wins are fourth most by any coach in his first 18 seasons in the history of college basketball. In late November 2009, he passed his mentor Jud Heathcote (340 wins) to become MSU’s all-time winningest coach. In the NCAA Tournament, Izzo is at his best, winning at a clip of .722 to rank seventh among all active coaches with at least 10 tournament games coached. Izzo led MSU to six Final Four appearances
the same with football. Both would go on to earn Division II All-America honors. Despite their busy schedules, they remain the closest of friends. For 10 years, they cohosted a golf tournament in Iron Mountain to raise money for the community, including a fitness center for the high school. Izzo is also an active volunteer in the community. Among his many efforts, he is very active with Coaches Vs. Cancer, Sparrow Hospital and the Jimmy “V” Foundation. In 2009, Izzo was presented the Coaches Vs. Cancer Champion Award, recognizing his work and leadership in the fight to save lives from cancer. Izzo was born January 30, 1955. His family includes his wife, Lupe, daughter, Raquel, and son, Steven.
Izzo originally came to MSU from Northern Michigan, where he had been an assistant from 1979-83. He was named a part-time assistant at MSU in September 1983. When former assistant Edgar Wilson left in November 1983, Izzo became a full-time assistant. Izzo played guard for NMU’s basketball team from 1973-77, and was voted the team’s MVP as a senior. A native of Iron Mountain, Mich., Izzo and former NFL head coach Steve Mariucci were Iron Mountain High School teammates in football, basketball, baseball and track. As college roommates at Northern Michigan, Izzo walked on to the basketball team, while Mariucci did

DUKE BLUE DEVILS
Durham, NC HEAD COACH BIO
MIKE KRZYZEWSKI head coach
Winning seasons, superb graduation rates for his players and a basketball team that is as close as family are all attributes that reflect on the man who has spent over three decades as the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils, Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski.
Coach K, the winningest coach in NCAA Division I history after passing his mentor Bob Knight with a 74-69 win over Michigan State on Nov. 15, 2011, now has 957 career wins, while also ranked second in wins at one school (884), second in career ACC wins (402) and first in NCAA Tournament victories (82). Krzyzewski’s record as Duke’s all-time winningest coach offers further evidence of his success: 884 total wins; 506 weeks ranked in the top 25; 445 weeks ranked in the top 10; 109 weeks ranked No. 1; 11 Final Four berths in the last 27 years, including five straight appearances from 1988-92; 29 seasons with at least 20 wins; 12 regular season ACC crowns and 13 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament titles, including 10 of the last 15 years (a record five in succession from 1999-2003). Coach K has also led the Blue Devils to an NCAA-best 13 seasons with 30 or more wins. But most impressive are the four National Championships (1991, 1992, 2001 and 2010) that make Coach K one of only three coaches in NCAA history to earn four or more NCAA titles. In addition to Krzyzewski, only John Wooden (10), and Adolph Rupp (4) have accomplished that feat. With back-to-back national championships in 1991 and 1992, Coach K became the first coach since Wooden in 1972-73 to earn consecutive NCAA crowns. The Blue Devils grabbed their third title in 2001 with an 82-72 win over Arizona in Minneapolis, Minn. Duke defeated Butler, 61-59, in the 2010 championship game in Indianapolis, Ind. to give Krzyzewski his fourth NCAA Championship. Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils have been a fixture on the national basketball scene with 18 consecutive NCAA Tournament berths from 1996-2013 and 29 in the last 30 years. Overall, he has taken his program to postseason play in 30 of his 33 years and is the winningest active coach in NCAA
8
Tournament play with a stunning 82-25 record for a .766 winning percentage. He also ranks first in NCAA Tournament history in wins (82) and games (107). From 1999-2002, Duke finished number one in the nation in the final Associated Press poll for a record four consecutive seasons. In 200304, the Blue Devils reached the nation’s top spot in the AP poll, marking the seventh straight year they had been number one (only UCLA’s string of 12 consecutive years reaching No. 1 from 1964-75 was longer). Krzyzewski has mentored seven National Players of the Year (nine selections), 27 AllAmericans (41 selections), eight ACC Players of the Year (10 selections) and 81 All-ACC selections during his tenure at Duke. Coach K has coached 47 NBA Draft picks, including a record 26 first round selections. An NCAA-best 17 Blue Devils have been NBA Lottery picks with Elton Brand (1999) and Kyrie Irving (2011) being taken No. 1 overall in their respective drafts. Krzyzewski earned his 900th career victory on March 20, 2011 with a 73-71 win over Michigan in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. On March 1, 2008, Krzyzewski became the sixth coach in Division I history to reach 800 wins with an 87-86 victory at N.C. State. Coach K became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to record 800 wins at one school with a win over Kansas State on Nov. 23, 2010. On Nov. 17, 2000, Krzyzewski earned his 500th win at Duke with a 98-85 triumph over Villanova. That night, the fabled floor of Cameron Indoor Stadium was dedicated as Coach K Court. On Feb. 13, 2010, Krzyzewski became the eighth coach in Division I history to coach 1,000 games at one school. In all, Coach K has been named the National Coach of the Year 12 times in eight different seasons, including Basketball Times, UPI and Chevrolet (1986), Naismith (1989), the NABC (1991), The Sporting News and Naismith (1992), Basketball Times (1997), the NABC and Naismith (1999), Chevrolet (2000) and the Victor Awards (2001). He was named Coach of the Decade for the 1990s by the NABC and was the second recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. On October 5, 2001, Coach K was presented by his college coach Bob Knight as one of three members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2001. Krzyzewski was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year on Dec. 5, 2011. In 1992, The Sporting News named him the
THECHAMPIONSCLASSIC.COM
Sportsman of the Year, becoming the first college coach to win the honor. Krzyzewski also received another prestigious honor in 2001 as he was named “America’s Best Coach” by Time magazine and CNN. Krzyzewski added to his already impressive list of accomplishments on Oct. 26, 2005 when he was named head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Team program for 2006-2008. With Krzyzewski at the helm, Team USA won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics with a 118-107 victory over Spain. In the summer of 2007, he guided the USA squad to a gold medal victory and an unblemished 10-0 record in the FIBA Americas Championship. Krzyzewski has been honored by USA Basketball as the National Coach of the Year four times. On July 21, 2009, he resumed his role as head coach of the USA Basketball Men’s Senior National Team through 2012. Coach K guided Team USA to a 9-0 record and gold medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championships. Krzyzewski guided Team USA to an 8-0 and a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics to become the first coach since Henry Iba (1964 & 1968) to lead the program to back-to-back Olympic gold medals. On May 23, 2013, Krzyzewski was again tabbed to lead the USA Men’s Senior National Team for the 2013-2016 quadrennium. In his first two stints as head coach of Team USA, Coach K posted a 62-1 record, including an active 50-game win streak. He has guided the program to a pair of Olympic gold medals as well as the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

first-round draft picks in 2010. The next season, four of his players earned NBA selections, and six Wildcats heard their names called at the 2012 draft, the most in the two-round draft era. His three No. 1 overall selections are the most all-time, and he’s had 17 players drafted during his four years at Kentucky, including 13 first-round picks.
Coach Cal reached the mountaintop in his third year in Lexington, guiding Kentucky to its eighth national championship and its 15th Final Four. In doing so, he claimed his first national championship and his fourth appearance in the Final Four.
Much like he did at UMass, where his players graduated at nearly 80 percent, Calipari has stressed academics. Fifteen of his last 18 seniors at Memphis earned their bachelor’s degrees, and all 10 players at UK who were eligible to graduate by the end of their senior years walked away with a diploma in hand. The Wildcats posted a 3.4 grade-point average for the 2013 spring semester, the fourth time in the last five semesters they earned a 3.0 GPA or better.
JOHN CALIPARI head coach
In becoming only the second coach in NCAA history to lead three different schools to the Final Four, he has racked up more than 500 victories, 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and numerous national coach of the year honors. While building a program out of obscurity at Massachusetts, laying the foundation at Memphis and restoring luster at college basketball’s greatest program at Kentucky, he has totaled the second-most wins in NCAA history in the first 20 years of a college coaching career. Quite honestly, though, Calipari’s oncourt success overshadows a much more significant picture. In his goal to lead a program, he has helped realize their dreams and to the NBA, including a

Calipari has also headed up the EverFi Financial Literacy Program, which teaches students across Kentucky the importance of money management. Author of the national bestseller, “Bounce Back: Overcoming Setbacks to Succeed in Business and in Life,” Calipari is a master of communication and maximizing talent. He lives by the motto “that it’s never a matter of how far you have fallen, but instead it’s about how high you bounce back.” Calipari and his wife, Ellen, have two daughters, Erin and Megan, and a son, Bradley.
His foundation, The Calipari Foundation, has raised millions of dollars to help the lives of those in need in the Commonwealth and across the country. In 2010, he used a telethon to raise more than $1 million for victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, and he organized another one in 2012 for victims of Superstorm Sandy. A year after helping raise $350,000 for charity during the inaugural UK alumni weekend, Calipari was the driving force behind the more than $1 million that was donated to local and national organizations during the second annual alumni weekend. His foundation has also worked with and donated money to Samaritan’s

Returning four starters and showcasing one of the top freshmen in college basketball, Kansas won its ninth-straight, 13th Big 12 title and NCAA-leading 56th overall conference regular-season title in 201213. The Jayhawks went 31-6 and tied Kansas State for the conference crown with a 14-4 record, won their sixth Big 12 and 13th all-time league tournament title and entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed for the 11th time in school history and fifth time under Self. Kansas’ run to the NCAA title game in 2011-12 was quite the accomplishment after returning only one starter and losing seven regulars from KU’s 35-3 team of 2010-11. In 2011-12, KU won its thenschool-record eighth-straight conference

regular-season title and advanced to its 14th Final Four. In 2010-11, Kansas had lost three players to the NBA from the previous season, yet did not miss a beat as the Jayhawks went 14-2 in conference play, capturing a seventh-straight Big 12 regular-season title. Kansas entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed and advanced to the Elite Eight. Kansas entered the 2009-10 season ranked No. 1 and held that ranking for all but three polls throughout the year. In the RPI’s highest-rated conference in the nation, KU won its sixth-straight Big 12 regular-season title with a 15-1 record. KU entered the 2010 NCAA Tournament as the overall No. 1 seed and posted 30 victories for the third time in four seasons. After a successful 2008-09 campaign, Self was named the national coach of the year by eight different outlets. That season, Kansas had lost six of its top seven scorers, including all five starters. KU went on to win the Big 12 regular-season championship, its fifth straight, going 142. The Jayhawks finished 27-8 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 as a No. 3 seed. The 2007-08 Kansas team was one of the best in school history. Ranked seventh or higher all season, KU won a schoolrecord 37 games en route to the school’s fifth overall and third NCAA national championship. Kansas claimed the Big 12 regular-season championship and third consecutive Big 12 tourney title. Additionally, a school-record five Jayhawks were chosen in the 2008 NBA Draft. The 2006-07 season was not only historic for Kansas basketball, but also in the career of Self. As KU won its 50th league title and 1,900th all-time victory, Self won his 300th career game with a road victory at Missouri. The Jayhawks entered the 2005-06 season unranked yet Self orchestrated KU to a 15-2 record in its last 17 games, highlighted by a Big 12 Championship to go along with the league regular-season crown. Kansas not only won a share of the Big 12 regular-season championship in 200405, but also opened the season ranked
