AWARD-WINNING CHEF RONNIE NASUTI OF TIKI’S GRILL & BAR IS A BUSY GUY. In order to produce the signature dishes that Tiki’s serves to its 6,500 to 7,200 weekly customers, he goes through 175 pounds of local beef and approximately 450 pounds of fish per week. Despite his demanding schedule, though, Chef Ronnie’s top priority is Hawaii’s environment—both physically and economically. As a result, all of the aforementioned meat is obtained from local sources. “Buying local is huge to being green,” says Chef Ronnie. “‘Local’ means it’s beef that wasn’t shipped from the mainland. And because the cows were grass-fed, no corn was shipped from the mainland to feed them.” Chef Ronnie also sources produce from local growers like Nalo Farms and Y. Fukunaga. He even gets 25 pounds of green onions per week from one independent local farmer. “He’s been in business for many many years.” Chef Ronnie explains. “He’s an older guy, and he still delivers them himself.” As the former Executive Chef of Roy’s Restaurant in Hawaii Kai, Chef Ronnie is no stranger to the world of high-end dining. For over 10 years, he served as Roy Yamaguchi’s right-hand man, polishing his skills and forming his own unique style. He made his initial foray into the world of culinary arts in his high school days, when he completed a vocational program. Then Les Dames D’escoffier Society in Massachusetts sponsored his apprenticeship at the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston before moving to Oahu in 1990. The addition of Chef Ronnie to Tiki’s Grill & Bar last year has allowed him to unleash his passion for fine food, prepared and consumed responsibly. The Island feel for which Tiki’s has become well-known remains but with a twist that is uniquely Chef Ronnie’s. Already, he has revamped Tiki’s menu, adding such delights as the sizzling “roll-your-own” lettuce wraps (marinated beef ribeye, Maui

butter lettuce, and marinated bean sprouts served with Nalo Farms honey and ko chu jang dipping sauce, sesame glass noodles, and house-made kim chee) and the Island Ono “Poisson Cru” (Hawaiian Ono, Kula onions, Kahuku sea asparagus, and Kamuela tomatoes served with lime juice and coconut milk), a variation of similar Tahitian and Samoan dishes. Fans of certain longstanding favorites like prime rib poke (flash seared prime rib cubes with housemade pipikaula aioli and baby greens from Nalo Farms) need not worry. “I’d never get rid of that,” says Chef Ronnie. “People just love it.” Chef Ronnie’s hopes to not only introduce new culinary crowd-pleasers to Tiki’s patrons but also to redefine the Waikiki dining experience for locals and tourists alike.

The Story of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic

Diamond Head Classic

The story of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic can be traced back to August, 2008. The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, UH Athletic department, our Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl team and ESPN felt the time was right to launch a new basketball event in Honolulu. Within a few months we were able to strike a deal that worked for all parties involved. Christmas week presented an attractive TV window, as there weren’t any other collegiate basketball tournaments during that time frame. Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaii’s largest and longest-serving carrier, stepped in as a critical partner to allow our tournament model to work. And it certainly helped that Pete Derzis, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ESPN Regional Television, loves Hawai‘i. Pete is and always has been very bullish on doing business in the Islands. Schools love participating in this tournament. For the coaches, the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is a nice recruiting tool and presents an excellent bonding trip for their teams. As a bonus, the teams get to stay at one of the great Sheraton properties in Waikiki – and these are some of the nicest properties in the entire world! Of course, sports fans in Hawai‘i also reap the rewards of this event. Not only do they get to see some great basketball, but the event also provides 22 hours of live ESPN programming. Combined with its sister event, the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, the state of Hawai‘i is showcased through 25 hours of ESPN programming in a span of four days. It’s a wonderful and invaluable opportunity to promote Hawai‘i to the world.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention our host school, the University of Hawai‘i. UH Athletics Director Ben Jay and his staff have been exceptional in their support of this event. Welcome to the fifth edition of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. On behalf of our organizing committee, our partners and sponsors, I extend a warm mahalo for your continued support and patronage. Enjoy the games!

“Combined with its sister event, the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, the state of Hawai‘i is showcased through 25 hours of ESPN programming in a span of four days. It’s a wonderful and invaluable opportunity to promote Hawai‘i to the world.”

2011: An X-ceptional Upset

For basketball junkies, the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is the ultimate Christmas gift. Stirring comebacks and buzzer-beating heroics. High-arching jumpers and rim-rattling slams. Twelve action-packed games. Eight high-level teams. A nationwide audience. And the most beautiful and alluring tropical setting on Earth. Yes, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. In just four short years, the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic has already established itself as a pristine jewel among college basketball holiday tournaments. Every Christmas week, top teams from around the country come to Honolulu for three days of intense competition. “I love this tournament,” says Gib Arnold, head coach of the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors, the event’s host school. “It’s already one of the premier preseason tournaments in the country, and it’s still growing. It’s always extremely competitive, and I know the fans are going to see some really good games.” Owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television (a subsidiary of ESPN), the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic debuted in 2009. The USC Trojans outlasted the UNLV Rebels to capture the first tournament title. (Coincidentally, Arnold was then an assistant coach for the Trojans.) Every tournament game is broadcast on the ESPN family of networks, including ESPN 2, ESPN U and ESPN 3, providing both the participating schools and the Aloha State invaluable hours of national television exposure. In 2012, nearly 19 million TV viewers tuned in to the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic and its Christmas Day sister event, the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl. For visiting schools, the tournament also provides a unique cultural education. “Some of our players have been to Hawai‘i before, but most of them have not,” says Craig Robinson, head coach of Oregon State, which is part of this year’s Classic field. “This is a chance for our guys to experience something they haven’t before. It’s one of those life experiences that they will remember for years to come.” Here’s a brief look at the history of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic:

2009: A Trojan Run The USC Trojans used a stifling defense and a 16-2 first-half run to upend the No. 20-ranked UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, 6756, and capture the first Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic championship. Senior forward Marcus Johnson led the Trojans with 19 points and 8 rebounds. The tournament’s Most Valuable Player was Johnson’s teammate, Mike Gerrity. The senior point guard played all 40 minutes in the title game, notching 13 points, 3 assists and no turnovers.

2010: Butler Did It Future NBA guard Shelvin Mack scored a team-high 20 points to lead the Butler Bulldogs to a decisive 84-68 win over Washington State in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic’s championship game. The Bulldogs used the tournament as a springboard for the rest of the season, as they advanced all the way to the NCAA Tournament championship game, falling to Connecticut. Mack is now with the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks. Two more players in the tournament are also currently in the NBA: Chris

MAKING HIS POINT:

Who scored the very first points in the first-ever game of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic?

Kansas State dominated the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, outscoring their three opponents by a combined 50 points, to claim the 2011 title. But Hawaii fans will most remember the host team’s stunning upset over No. 14-ranked Xavier, an 84-82 overtime thriller. The Rainbow Warriors’ Hauns Brereton drained a desperation double-clutch threepointer to tie the game at the end of regulation, and teammate Joston Thomas scored the winning shot with 1.5 seconds left in overtime.

“It’s already one of the premier preseason tournaments in the country, and it’s still growing. It’s always extremely competitive, and I know the fans are going to see some really good games.” – UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I HEAD COACH GIB ARNOLD

2012: Wildcats Rule the West In perhaps the most thrilling contest in the short history of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, No. 3-ranked Arizona held off No. 17 San Diego State, 68-67, to capture the tournament title. Both teams had 11-game winning streaks heading into the game, but it was the Wildcats who pulled out the victory. The tournament MVP was Arizona forward Solomon Hill, who later became a first-round draft pick of the NBA’s Indiana Pacers. This year’s 2013 tournament field includes Akron, Boise State, George Mason, Iowa State, Oregon State, Saint Mary’s, South Carolina and host Hawai‘i. The well-balanced field includes six teams who earned postseason berths last season, including four who advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

THE ANSWER is Manny Adako, a forward for Northeastern University. Adako, who is now playing professional ball in Qatar, went on to score 20 points against the Huskies’ quarterfinal opponent, Saint Mary’s. It wasn’t enough, however, as the Gaels prevailed, 78-67, in the inaugural 2009 contest. 14 • HAWAIIAN AIRLINES DIAMOND HEAD CLASSIC 2013

HOMETOWN HERO: Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg began his association with the basketball program as a ball boy. In the 1986 contest against Windsor, star Cyclone player Jeff Hornacek landed on Hoiberg, sprained his ankle and missed the rest of the game. Recalled Hoiberg, “Injuring the best player in school history wasn’t how I wanted to be remembered.” Years later, as a Cyclone player, Hoiberg got the nickname “The Mayor” because of his popularity with the fans. Ralph Sampson and the No. 1-ranked Virginia Cavaliers. At the time, Chaminade was a tiny NAIA school with an enrollment of about 800 students. The 82-74 shocker on Dec. 22, 1982 is still regarded by many as the greatest upset in the history of college basketball. That game helped lead to the formation of the Maui Invitational, an annual eight-team tournament held in Lahaina on the island of Maui.

The sport of basketball has a rich history in the Hawaiian Islands.

BY LANCE TOMINAGA

While growing up in Hawai‘i, Barack Obama probably never imagined he would one day become President of the United States of America. He did, however, envision himself as an accomplished basketball phenom. “Good luck in everything you do, and get that law degree,” a young Obama inscribed in a high school classmate’s yearbook. “Some day when I am an all-pro basketballer, and I want to sue my team for more money, I’ll call on you.” Of course, President Obama wasn’t the only person in the Islands trying to chase a hoops dream. Ever since James Naismith invented the game in 1891, basketball has maintained a considerable presence in Hawai‘i.

The Aloha Classic

The sport’s popularity in Hawai‘i soared in the early 1970s, when the University of Hawai‘i fielded its celebrated “Fabulous Five” squad. Coached by the Hilo-born Ephraim “Red” Rocha, the team compiled a lofty 47-8 record in two seasons, earning an NCAA Tournament bid in 1972. That 1972 team was ranked as high as No. 12 in the national polls. The team’s leading player, center Bob Nash, was a firstround draft pick by the Detroit Pistons and would later become head coach of the Rainbow Warriors.

1964 The Rainbow Classic holiday tournament debuts.

The Rainbow Classic also played an important role in popularizing basketball in the Islands. The eight-team holiday tournament began in 1964 and, over the years, brought in the country’s premier collegiate programs, including North Carolina, Indiana, Kansas, Duke, Syracuse and Michigan. The event also gave Hawai‘i fans an opportunity to see many of the game’s greatest players, including future NBA legends such as Michael Jordan, Pete Maravich, Elvin Hayes, Isiah Thomas, Danny Manning, Chris Webber, Christian Laettner and Paul Pierce.

For nearly 20 years, the Aloha Classic was played at the Neal Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. Top college seniors from around the country participated in this roundrobin tournament to showcase their skills in front of NBA scouts. Players who used this event as a launching pad to the pros included Hall of Fame legends such as Nate Archibald, David Thompson, Reggie Miller, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and Joe Dumars. Honolulu once fielded its own professional team. The Hawai‘i Volcanoes competed in the now-defunct Continental Basketball Association in 1979-80. The Volcanoes were led by future NBA guard Rickey Green. Of course, a history of basketball in Hawai‘i wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Chaminade Silverswords’ stunning upset over

High school basketball in the Aloha State also has a proud legacy. Iolani School in Honolulu, for example, has hosted the prestigious Iolani Basketball Classic since 1983, drawing some of the tops schools in the nation. Among the players who have competed in the tournament are Kevin Durant, Bobby Hurley, Brandon Roy, Tyson Chandler, Jerry Stackhouse, Josh Smith and Rajon Rondo.

The Los Angeles Lakers have held several training camps in Honolulu. Local fans have enjoyed watching the likes of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant perform in several preseason games in the Islands. Hawai‘i has also been the home of the Pete Newell Big Man Camp. The instructional camp was founded in 1976 by Newell, whose son, Tom, played for the University of Hawai‘i. Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O’Neal, Carmelo Anthony and Bill Walton are among the players who have participated in the camp.

Opened in 1994, the Stan Sheriff Center on the UH-Manoa campus is a 10,300-seat venue that draws some of the best teams in the country. In 2012, fans in the arena witnessed No. 4-ranked Stanford pull off a thrilling upset over Brittney Griner and the then-No. 1-ranked Baylor Bears in NCAA women’s basketball. Today, the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic shines as the latest jewel in Hawai‘i’s proud and storied basketball heritage. As the tournament continues to attract the best schools from around the country, fans can expect to enjoy their own “Hawaiian Hoops Heaven” for years to come.
