It has been discovered that most people who struggle with drug addiction began experimenting with drugs in their teens. Teenage drug abuse is one of the largest problems in society today and the problem grows and larger every year. Drugs are a pervasive force in our culture today. My teenage cousin advised me that after she passed the stage of being pressured by her peers to use drugs and alcohol, she began using it to make her feel better because she was suffering from depression. Depression is the result of chemical imbalance and environmental influence. Drugs and alcohol are the most readily available methods of emotional anesthesia, if not on hand; they would find a substitute (Henican 141). She would use drugs when she would think about her incarcerated dad that has been in and out of her life from birth. Her family members would try to encourage her and would often tell her, "If you continue to do the things that you are doing, you will end up like your dad incarcerated." She rebels against her mother and stepfather when they try to correct her and discipline her. She doesn't like to follow the rules at home or school and acts like she doesn't do anything wrong. Homosexuals are being discriminated in their own homes, work place, and schools. Vanessa Garcia was judged and bullied during her childhood because she was lesbian. Garcia "was afraid to go to school [because] everyone treated [her] like a freak". Her fear came from the peers in her school harassing and calling her names. Garcia never felt like she fit in with her peers. At a moment she even felt that there was "something fundamentally wrong with [her]"; which almost caused her life when she tried to commit suicide. In the book, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, boys are stranded on an island far away, with no connections to theadult world. These children, having no rules, or civilization, have their true nature exposed. Not surprisingly, these children's nature happens to be savagery. Courage is a necessity to overcome fears and achieve a desired goal. Fear is something that exists in all of us. There is no hero or any particular courageous figure that is without fear. Being fearless is not required to be courageous, one simply has to look past or overcome their fears to possess this great quality. The most common description of what violence really is can be given as negativity towards something or someone either through physical or verbal actions, which often causes the victim to suffer pain. The different types of violence that exist in our multi–cultural society are out–numbered, but the most evident ones are domestic, gang, sexual, and racial violence. On October 24 2000, a news article headline read, "Gang wars 6 Dead". This event had taken place in Etobicoke, and the news article contained sentences like "Six victims in six months" and "calculated executions". It also contained terms like "Bloods" and "Crips". These terms and sentences have officially crossed the border and have become all too familiar in Canadian cities. In order to cut back this outlaw behaviour, we need to educate our youth about the ill effects of gangs, drugs, guns, and should try to persuade them to instead make friends with those who accept you for who you are and use all their time in doing something positive and proactive. As a result of reducing and preventing gang violence, many cities have created special task forces and given schools their own police officers.
Sexual violence is another form of violence that has plagued our cities. This crime involves violence that is specifically sexual in nature, to which the victim does not give consent. According to 2005 statistics, 51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual violence. 6 out of 10 victims who reported being sexually violated were under 17. These numbers are alarming and scary. The heart is what keeps all living breathing species alive, animals or humans. If the heart was to shut down but the nervous system continued and was active, it would not matter. This book showed the struggle between rich and poor. The two main groups of the story were the Socs and the greasers. The Socs are in the upper class while the greasers are the poor ones that dislike the Socs because they have more money, better cars, and act like they are better than the greasers. The fact that all three boys were still moving on without their parents showed that they had a lot of heart. The two main divisions were between the Greasers and the Socs, and this rivalry led to many conflicts in the book. Hinton illustrates the divisions and fighting in this quote, "They caught him and one of them had a lot of rings on his hand that's what had cut Johnny up so badly" (Hinton 33). Johnny was attacked by four Socs when he was playing with a football at the park. There are many times in the book where Socs attacked Greasers that were walking alone. Howard explains the divisions and violence of the gangs in this quote, "Tulsa was one of many American cities that had seen an increasing division between social classes since World War II, and the animosity between Greasers and Socs gangs illustrated the extent to which this division between social classes had permeated society" (Howard 28). The Greasers were seen as the poor outcast while the Socs were the popular one with all the money. The Socs provoke the Greasers by saying hurtful things and attacking them so both gangs feel the need to fight to prove that they are better. Hinton did a good job of portraying the violence and building up to these points and this keeps the reader interested in the book. In my life, I have been exposed to a challenge called change. Change can occur in many different ways and is dealt with in many different ways. I have come to the awareness that change can be the deepest of all things. I always thought that change occurred when you moved to a state or when you lost someone real close to you. Those are a challenge to change, yes, but change doesn't have to occur over a climactic incident. It can just appear overnight when your brain winds up when it's time to do something different. It's depressing how this works, but it's probably the most reason why people change. It's much like peer pressure which usually ends up in the wrong direction. For example, I was almost peer pressured to consume alcohol and to do smoking. Fortunately, for me, I escaped that change and didn't experience it. The people we adore love us so much that they want us to remain the way we are forever. Like how my mother always wanted me to stay the same little child, but I grew up. Not all people can stay the same for a long time. If the people we love and adore would just accept the change and go with it, they would understand where the change was coming from. It can be shaky to try to stop change and fight against it, especially if the person wants to change a lot. When I was ready for high school, I was expected to change almost everything in my life.
