Animals can breathe, feel happiness and pain, and also love the same as us, so why are we treating them as if they are our punching bags? According to The American Journal of Sports Medicine, "athletic trainers found 26 injuries and complaints in 20 of 24 players." ( ) That's almost the whole team! How can we have our kids get involved if they are most likely to get hurt? They are most likely to get minor injuries but may need physical therapy which may end up costing more than the sport itself. As Springerlink puts it, "Most injuries are minor and respond to analgesics, therapy modalities and exercise therapy. Groin pain is a common problem and particularly prevalent among soccer players owing to the game's specific stresses. Other less common but important injuries include facial trauma, mild brain injury (concussion) and heat–related injury." ( ) A girl in our very own high school has had a concussion for a little over five months. That's why more serious than a groin strain or an ankle injury. She had to go to eye therapy, as a result of the hit. Sports are some of the dangerous things kids could do today. So how do we help them stay healthy and happy and still do the things they love the most? Well maybe we should start with more protective rules that will help the kids stay safe and still not ruin the

It has been discovered that most people who struggle with drug addiction began experimenting with drugs in their teens. Teenage drug abuse is one of the largest problems in society today and the problem grows and larger every year. Drugs are a pervasive force in our culture today. To expect kids not to be influenced by the culture of their time is as unrealistic as believing in the tooth fairy (Bauman 140). Teens may feel pressured by their friends to try drugs, they may have easy access to drugs, they may use drugs to rebel against their family or society, or they may take an illegal drug because they are curious about it or the pleasure that it gives them. My teenage cousin advised me that after she passed the stage of being pressured by her peers to use drugs and alcohol, she began using it to make her feel better because she was suffering from depression. Depression is the result of chemical imbalance and environmental influence. Drugs and alcohol are the most readily available methods of emotional anesthesia, if not on hand; they would find a substitute (Henican 141). She would use drugs when she would think about her incarcerated dad that has been in and out of her life from birth. Her family members would try to encourage her and would often tell her, "If you continue to do the things that you are doing, you will end up like your dad incarcerated." She rebels against her mother and stepfather when they try to correct her and discipline her. She doesn't like to follow the rules at home or school and acts like she doesn't do anything wrong. Something psychologically is really going on with her mentally, that is one of the side effects that drugs causes. Seeing there is no way out feeling lonely like no one cares and no prospects for improvement leads to depression. Depression is something that many teens deal with during their lives. Some teens isolate themselves from their families by going in their rooms, staying out late, not eating and a bad grade or because of an argument with parents or friends – they may use more drugs than Get more

There are individuals that live in fear of showing their true identity to the world because they simply fear that society won't accept them for having a different sexual orientation. Society advocates that individuals should be able to be proud of who they are, but yet they judge homosexuals for being different. People are taught not to judge others based on their race or religion, so why do they still discriminate against homosexuals? The homosexual subculture is not accepted by society, looked down upon, and misjudged; however, they are human beings and deserve to be treated equally. Religion is a major aspect on why society believes that homosexuality is wrong and should not be accepted. Individuals who are against the LGBT (Lesbian,...show more content...
Homosexuals are being discriminated in their own homes, work place, and schools. Vanessa Garcia was judged and bullied during her childhood because she was lesbian. Garcia "was afraid to go to school [because] everyone treated [her] like a freak". Her fear came from the peers in her school harassing and calling her names. Garcia never felt like she fit in with her peers. At a moment she even felt that there was "something fundamentally wrong with [her]"; which almost caused her life when she tried to commit suicide. John Williams is another example of the fear that society creates for being a homosexual. Williams is a gay male student who aspires to become a middle school teacher. Nevertheless, he is afraid that there will not be a school that hires him because of his sexuality. Antigay prejudice and homophobia interfere with the dreams of many members of the LGBT community. Homophobia causes heterosexuals to believe that homosexuals are less worthy and therefore it is okay to treat them unfairly. People do not take in consideration the deep wounds they are causing gay individuals with their prejudices. LGBT are human beings and they should not be thought to be inferior. Myths about homosexuality are one of the reasons why society misjudges the LGBT community. Myths cause gay individuals to fear themselves, and they also cause society to think wrongly of homosexuality. People are told to believe that homosexuality is a

"There are too many people, and too few human beings." (Robert Zend) Even though there are many people on this planet, there are very few civilized people. Most of them are naturally savaged. In the book, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, boys are stranded on an island far away, with no connections to theadult world. These children, having no rules, or civilization, have their true nature exposed. Not surprisingly, these children's nature happens to be savagery. Savagery can clearly be identified in humans when there are no rules, when the right situation arouses, and finally when there is no civilization around us.
Without rules, savagery takes over. Without rules, man is free to do whatever he...show more content...

The boys don't put into practice their teachings from church/school on the island, but become savage beasts. This shows us that man is civilized in our society, only because of the fear for higher authority, not because that's their nature.
Man can only cover up inner savagery so long, before it breaks out, given the right situation. This states that with or without rules man will become savage when given the right situation. Every single man in this world is filled with inner savagery. But in this society, they tend to restrict the savagery from escaping. Given the right situation, their true nature, savagery, will be released. For example in the Simpsons, Ned Flanders, is the most civilized person. But yet on one particular episode he becomes savage when he is presented with the perfect circumstance. Golding quotes beautifully, "Then dog–like, uncomfortably on all fours yet unheeding his discomfort, he stole forward five yards and stopped. There was a loop of creeper with a tendril pendant from a node. The tendril was polished on the under side; pig, passing through the loop, brushed it with their bristly hide."– Lord of the Flies (pg. 48) Jack is the leader of the church choir, but yet he shows no qualities of a church choir leader once he starts hunting for boars. It is not necessary that we need an island to break out into savagery, because even in our society, when man is given the right situation, his savagery will break
Courage is a necessity to overcome fears and achieve a desired goal. Fear is something that exists in all of us. There is no hero or any particular courageous figure that is without fear. Being fearless is not required to be courageous, one simply has to look past or overcome their fears to possess this great quality. When overcoming fears and going against the norm, there are always risks involved. There are different types of risks that come about. Someone could risk life or limb, while others risk their reputation. Either risk is serious enough that a person must have courage to endure that particular risk. Courage can occur anytime, anywhere, and often in our everyday lives. Everyone will experience courage no matter how young,...show more content...
"The agent told me to be sure and keep my people away, as they were very poorly dressed. I did not do as I was told."(298) Even though it took some time, she eventually overcame her fear and her feelings of inferiority and stood up to Father Wilbur and the other white men. There are many risks involved when a person comes in contact with courage. A person's peers or the people close to them can be highly judgmental, especially if what you are doing clashes with common beliefs or behaviors. This stands very true when looking at the life of Martin Luther King Jr. His peers were not only the African American population, but also white upper–class clergymen. In the first line of Martin Luther King Junior's letter to the clergymen he states that he is "confined here in the Birmingham City Jail."(303) Dr. King took a great risk of being judged, solely by writing a letter to his peers. He knew that the clergymen already had their own ideas about him, but he took an even bigger risk by writing them from his jail cell. Another major risk that people take while being courageous is risking their life for the lives of others. In "And the Band Played On," Randy Shilts tells the story of a young female doctor, Grethe Rask, who risked her life because she worked in a clinic that didn't even provide the "В…basics [such] as sterile rubber gloves or disposable needles."(330) He goes on to describe even more horrifying details about Get more content

Violence is one of the most problematic issues society faces today, and it has been increasing day after day, in the streets of our cities. The most common description of what violence really is can be given as negativity towards something or someone either through physical or verbal actions, which often causes the victim to suffer pain. The different types of violence that exist in our multi–cultural society are out–numbered, but the most evident ones are domestic, gang, sexual, and racial violence. While violence can definitely be reduced, it will never be eliminated due to the nature of humans.

On October 24 2000, a news article headline read, "Gang wars 6 Dead". This event had taken place in Etobicoke, and the news article contained sentences like "Six victims in six months" and "calculated executions". It also contained terms like "Bloods" and "Crips". These terms and sentences have officially crossed the border and have become all too familiar in Canadian cities. In order to cut back this outlaw behaviour, we need to educate our youth about the ill effects of gangs, drugs, guns, and should try to persuade them to instead make friends with those who accept you for who you are and use all their time in doing something positive and proactive. As a result of reducing and preventing gang violence, many cities have created special task forces and given schools their own police officers.
Sexual violence is another form of violence that has plagued our cities. This crime involves violence that is specifically sexual in nature, to which the victim does not give consent. According to 2005 statistics, 51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual violence. 6 out of 10 victims who reported being sexually violated were under 17. These numbers are alarming and scary. It is extremely important to get rid of such sinister crimes in our communities because it robs the victims of their innocence, self–esteem, confidence, and even trust in our society. The

"The heart" The Heart is a very important organ in the body. It is what keeps your blood flowing and your organs going. It is a tireless muscle that pumps more than two thousand gallons of blood every day. The blood that is pumped is filled with nutrition and oxygen (Colombo 7). It travels through out your body in less than sixty seconds. So it needs to be taken extra good care of. When abuse is put on the body, theheart's performance is not at its best. The Heart is a major organ that needs loving and care. Everyone has only one and by abusing it, they are cutting their live span little by little. This is why patients who are in comas or vegetable states live because although they may have no nerve function, their heart beats on. The heart is what keeps all living breathing species alive, animals or humans. If the heart was to shut down but the nervous system continued and was active, it would not matter. The entire body would shut down because once the supplier no longer delivers what is needed; organs will no longer function correctly, therefore causing irreversible damage. Arteries are what carried the rich oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the organs throughout the body. The Veins are what bring back the carbon dioxide blood to the heart. It then has to be put through a cycle so that it can be shipped back out. Blood travels from the right atrium through the tricuspid valve, to the right ventricle. From there, it is pumped to the lungs, the oxygen–rich blood goes to the left atrium and then through the mitral valve to the left ventricle where it goes to the aorta to be pumped around the body (Colombo 7). What looks to be a complicated process that would take hours or minutes is actually done in a matter a seconds. As the population ages heart failure is expected to increase exceptionally. About twenty–two percent of men and forty–four percent of women will develop heart failure within six years of having a heart attack. "Thirty years ago patients would have died from their heart attacks!" (Couzens)

This book showed the struggle between rich and poor. The two main groups of the story were the Socs and the greasers. The Socs are in the upper class while the greasers are the poor ones that dislike the Socs because they have more money, better cars, and act like they are better than the greasers. The Outsiders is a good story by S.E. Hinton that shows the struggles of growing up Hinton did a fine job with the character development, the plot, and the theme with a few flaws. The Outsiders is a book that changed the style of young adult writers because it went off from the genre that young adult writer were using during that time period. The fact that all three boys were still moving on without their parents showed that they had a lot of heart. The two main divisions were between the Greasers and the Socs, and this rivalry led to many conflicts in the book. Hinton illustrates the divisions and fighting in this quote, "They caught him and one of them had a lot of rings on his hand that's what had cut Johnny up so badly" (Hinton 33). Johnny was attacked by four Socs when he was playing with a football at the park. There are many times in the book where Socs attacked Greasers that were walking alone. Howard explains the divisions and violence of the gangs in this quote, "Tulsa was one of many American cities that had seen an increasing division between social classes since World War II, and the animosity between Greasers and Socs gangs illustrated the extent to which this division between social classes had permeated society" (Howard 28). The Greasers were seen as the poor outcast while the Socs were the popular one with all the money. The Socs provoke the Greasers by saying hurtful things and attacking them so both gangs feel the need to fight to prove that they are better. Hinton did a good job of portraying the violence and building up to these points and this keeps the reader interested in the book. There are many critics and parents who were outraged about the violence that takes place in the book. This quote by Hinton demonstrates the harsh violence, "I ducked and

The Holocaust was the murder and persecution of approximately 6 million Jews and many others by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The Nazis came to power in Germany in January of 1933. The Nazis thought that the "inferior" Jews were a threat to the "racially superior" German racial community. The death camps were operated from 1941 to 1945, and many people lost their lives or were forced to work in concentration camps during these years. The story leading up to the Holocaust, how the terrible event affected people's lives, and how it came to and end are all topics that make this historic event worth learning about. While in prison, he wrote "Mein Kamf" (Which means "My Struggle"). "Mein Kamf" was a memoir and propaganda tract in which he predicted "the extermination of the Jewish Race in Germany" after a general European war. About ten years after he was released from prison, Hitler arose from obscurity to power after taking advantage of the weaknesses of his enemies. On January 20 of 1933, he was named chancellor of Germany. When President Paul von Hindenburg died in 1934, Adolf appointed himself as Germany's ruler. At first, the Nazis were only killing political opponents like Communists and/or Social Democrats, for which their harshest persecution was used. Many of the first prisoners sent to Dachau (The first official concentration camp opened near Munich in March of 1933) were communists. By July, the concentration camps run by the Germans held around 27,000 people in what they called "protective custody." The Nazis had huge rallies and acts of symbolism such as burning of books by Jews. During the years of 1933 to 1939, the hundreds of thousands of Jews who were able to leave Germany got out quickly, but many were left behind, and they lived their lives in a constant state of uncertainty and fear. During the fall of 1939, Hitler started the so–called Euthanasia Program. The Euthanasia Program allowed Nazi officials to select around 70,000 German citizens institutionalized for mental illnesses or disabilities. These Germans were to be gassed to death. Teenage is a fundamental stage of life that each human being passes through. Some people face this period of their life strongly and positively, while others face many problems and difficulties. This depends on the environment these young adults live in, their parents, their friends, their living conditions, their education, and many other factors. Teenagers face many problems such as becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol, being influenced negatively by their peers, self–image and weight, or even arguments with their parents

Peer pressure has always been present and will also always be present. It is not a disease or a crime, it is an influence; either a negative or a positive one. Negative peer pressure is an influence put on a person to do something wrong, or something the person doesn't want to do. This may be stealing, taking drugs, or other dangerous actions. If someone influences you into doing something like this it is considered a negative peer pressure. This is a major problem in most schools all around the world. Teenagers usually feel peer pressure when they feel unpopular between their friends, or when they want to be accepted in a group of other teenagers. The group is a place where one feels accepted, where he can feel good about himself, where he feels secure. It increases his self esteem, and it also enhances his self–image. Unfortunately, teenagers who want to be part of these groups, need to follow certain unpleasant routines, such as stealing, smoking, taking drugs, or drinking alcohol. Many times they do things that they would never have imagined themselves doing before meeting a new group of people. Some teens try to make the "right" decision so others will admire them. Having parents or other responsible adults they can turn to for help or advice is crucial at this point in a teen's life.
Teenagers might also face self–image or weight problems. One of the main illnesses that comes from these

For over a 150 years man has been troubled by one great mystery, a mystery that has baffled all who have witnessed it and all who have tried to solve it. This mystery is commonly known as Bigfoot, a tall hairy man/ape who lurks in the woods in almost every country on this planet. Some say it is just an ape, some believe it is a man in costume, and others are true believers of this hairy phenomenon. For more than a decade and a half this creature of myth has caused enormous contradictions in the field of science, bringing about one question. Does Bigfoot exist?
Throughout the 150 year history of Bigfoot many concerns have raised, the most in number have been from Native Americans. The Karok Indians tell of an "upslope person"...show more content...

These people have given detail of its features and characteristics. Bigfoot is described to have a rancid odor which is smelt from miles away. It can weight up to 1,000 pounds and it reach higher than eight feet in length (Gaffron, 16). Its footprints tell a lot about Bigfoot as well, from them scientists deduce his extremely wide strides of six to eight feet, the four inch to 24 inch foot size, and the unusual disproportionate width of the ball of its feet (Fahrenbach). With all its obvious differences Bigfoot also shares common traits with primates, for example the hair some bone structure, and a minimum mental capacity.
From the United States to China people have reported seeing what they believe is Bigfoot. These encounters may or may not be true; one cannot know for certain the truth of such questionable things, the only thing that can be done is to keep an open mind. The most common sightings occur in remote regions in northern and southern California, by people claiming to see huge, hairy human–like creatures. Most people that see a Bigfoot don't know what they've seen, let alone know it's something worth reporting. These are some examples of sightings which have been recorded. In 1958, while flying a private plane over Bluff creek, a husband and wife see Bigfoot tracks, they follow them until they are above the Bigfoot. On April 16, 1969 Mrs. Robert Behme sees a Bigfoot limp across a road in
In my life, I have been exposed to a challenge called change. Change can occur in many different ways and is dealt with in many different ways. I have come to the awareness that change can be the deepest of all things. I always thought that change occurred when you moved to a state or when you lost someone real close to you. Those are a challenge to change, yes, but change doesn't have to occur over a climactic incident. It can just appear overnight when your brain winds up when it's time to do something different. Even with friends that you used to have and know that move on. For example, most of my friends from elementary school, I don't even talk to them anymore. For obvious reasons, people will turn down the changes in life....show more content...
It's depressing how this works, but it's probably the most reason why people change. It's much like peer pressure which usually ends up in the wrong direction. For example, I was almost peer pressured to consume alcohol and to do smoking. Fortunately, for me, I escaped that change and didn't experience it. The people we adore love us so much that they want us to remain the way we are forever. Like how my mother always wanted me to stay the same little child, but I grew up. Not all people can stay the same for a long time. If the people we love and adore would just accept the change and go with it, they would understand where the change was coming from. It can be shaky to try to stop change and fight against it, especially if the person wants to change a lot. When I was ready for high school, I was expected to change almost everything in my life. The reason that somebody wants to change is usually not their choice, but a feeling that the person feels inside their head. Maybe the change isn't the best change, but if you dig deeper, the person that you adore isn't really changing. They are just trying to find themselves and the one thing they need the most is the support of the people who they care about the most. When I was attending college, I was expecting a lot of changing to take place. With the support of my family and friends, it was no big deal for me. When the people they care about the most, detach their change as Get
