Light Installations Music Storytelling Dance Street Theatre Film Performance
Welcome to Light Night Leeds 2015 Light Night is back! This year is our 11th festival and it’s packed with exciting arts events for all the family. For one night only Leeds city centre will come alive with spectacular large-scale light projections, exhibitions, installations, film, dance, music and street performances. Many of the city’s public buildings will be opening their doors late into the night as artists transform spaces into temporary showcases of their work.
Things you need to know:
2015 is the UNESCO International Year of Light, and in celebration of the important role light plays in our lives, many of our commissioned artists have responded to the theme of light in their work - whether it be light sources of the world, light in nature, or the creative and innovative use of light in design and technology. We are also proud to continue supporting new and emerging artists through our SHINE programme.
Denotes type of event on each listing.
This year our new venues include The Tetley, the Queens Hotel, and also the River Aire which will play host to our amazing light and water projection Whale Song. In the lead up to the festival, Leeds residents have been attending lantern making workshops for a special Light Night Lantern Parade. Come along and join the procession through the city led by a giant illuminated owl, the symbol of Leeds! So, bring your friends and family along to experience a fantastic festival atmosphere, discover over 60 different events across the city centre, and sample some delicious street food. As darkness falls, come and see the city of Leeds in a new light!
All events are family friendly unless otherwise stated. All events are free but some events may require booking in advance. Light Night Rider bus stops are situated in each zone to help you get around more easily, please see the map for more details. All events and routes around the city are accessible unless specifically stated in the listing. Most venues have toilet facilities, including a fully accessible toilet (HDU) on Millennium Square.

2 / Wave Garden Paul Friedlander Millennium Square, LS2 8BH 6 –11pm These custom-made artworks incorporate chromastrobic light and high power LEDs that change colour constantly, ‘painting’ ever-changing patterns onto the surface of sculptural forms that appear to be made of pure light. A beautiful and intriguing installation that will appeal to all ages.
1 / Painting with Light Michael Bosanko Millennium Square, LS2 8BH 6 –11pm Michael moves in co-ordinated ways, painting the air with light, and the result is a long exposure photograph which has captured every single movement. This art form uses no special software, no editing, and complete spatial awareness. Often, Michael lets people participate, while he ‘paints’ around them, or they try light painting for themselves.

Millennium Square Zone (Continued) Six skilled dancers dart between the shadows in a performance where what is not seen is as important as what is. How to Read a Dark Screen uses a single torch in a dark space to look at the power of the dark. Sometimes calming and sometimes uneasy, this piece from graduates of Northern School of Contemporary Dance focuses on the sensation of being alone. Part of the SHINE emerging artist programme.

3 / Spotlight on Fashion Fusion East Meets West The Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds Banqueting Suite and Foyer, Leeds Civic Hall, Millennium Square, LS1 1UR 6 –11pm (Shows 6.45, 8.15, 9.15pm) This exciting evening of catwalk shows and fashion exhibitions will shine a light on the creativity of designers from both China and the UK. Exhibiting their work will be QingYi Apparel from China, whose fashion ethos is based on Buddhist and Taoist ideologies, Yorkshire designers using textiles produced by iconic Leeds company, Hainsworth, and students from Leeds College of Art whose designs reimagine traditional Chinese dress. Immerse yourself in a fashion infused cultural extravaganza; watch high fashion on the catwalk, and enjoy traditional Chinese music and tea ceremonies in the beautiful surroundings of Leeds Civic Hall.
James Rosental Main Theatre, Carriageworks Theatre, Millennium Square, LS2 3AD 6 –11pm (every hour on the half hour) This short piece of gripping aerial dance theatre takes the plunge into a forbidden world. Seven woman, thriving to survive, are challenged by humanity as they soon come to realise only two lifelines are placed in front of them. An intriguing atmosphere, driving musical score and visual aesthetic combines Northern School of Contemporary Dance student James Rosental’s personal choreographic style alongside integrative and stunning aerial work. Now the lifeline has been placed in front of you are you going to take it? Part of the SHINE emerging artist programme.

Using the latest touch-screen technologies, artists Rebecca Smith and Peter Barber will collaborate to create an innovative piece of live projection art onto the facade of LCoA which will intricately encase the contours of the building. Brush marks and compositional elements are mixed with passages of pre-produced, projection mapped content, and set against a soundscape created by sonic artist Jimmy Power. This live performance becomes part of a ‘living mural’ that will shift from a stunning piece of seemingly static urban art into an organic installation which echoes the dynamism of Leeds College of Art. Commissioned by Leeds College of Art.
6 / Prometheus Ashley Panton Upstairs @ The Carriageworks, Millennium Square, LS2 3AD 6 –11pm
9 / light/body
Prometheus, from Ancient Greek mythology is said to have gifted man with fire, a source of light, heat and power that became the catalyst for the evolution of mankind. Taking the story as inspiration, this large installation synchronises light, sound, colour and movement using projection mapping to create an intensified sensory experience; with a soundtrack by Stuart Mellor which invokes a spectrum of emotions along the way. Part of the SHINE emerging artist programme.
7 / And Then They Saw The Light Carriageworks Young Theatre Makers Room 1, Carriageworks Theatre, Millennium Square, LS2 3AD 7pm, 7.30pm
Lucy Barker Leeds City College Technology Campus, Cookridge Street, LS2 8BL 7.30 –11pm light/body depicts a shape repeated many times by the artist Ana Mendieta using everyday materials, as well as her own body. Tragically killed after falling from her 33rd floor window, her final body shape was close to the one she had repeated in her work: perhaps her final work. 30 years on, candlelight poetically refers to this; the fleeting nature of life and experience whilst showing the power of those moments when we are burning at our brightest, perhaps when we are closest to the edges of life. Part of the SHINE emerging artist programme.
A strange new environment, how will they react? What is the human reaction to unfamiliar territory? This fun interactive performance by Carriageworks Young Theatre Makers will explore what it is to be new to things. Outside the performance times there will be an installation to view in the space.

Reacting to the architectural space in the Crypt, West has created a site-specific, vast installation work. Interested in the influence and perception of luminous saturate colour on visitors experiencing it, West has transformed the space into an immersive and sensory experience, allowing for psychological, physical, emotional and spiritual responses from visitors.
Through half-closed doors, holes in the walls and along the skirting boards, a sinister series of gruesome murders has taken place at Leeds Town Hall. Join a deadly game of cat and well... rat... and use your powers of deduction to find out who (or what) is killing off the rodent population of Leeds, and why. Have you got what it takes to find the culprit before he, she... or it strikes again? A puppet rat-infested murder mystery taking place inside one of Leeds’ most (in)famous buildings. Please book in advance on 0113 2243801.
15 / Your Colour Perception Liz West The Crypt, Leeds Town Hall, The Headrow, LS1 3AD 6 –11pm Liz West’s Your Colour Perception incorporates colour and light to create the experience of what it might be like to walk through a rainbow.
16 / Tears of the Angels Sharon Caton-Rose Oxford Place Methodist Church, Oxford Place, LS1 3AU 6 –11pm This immersive installation about the invisibility of climate change creates a meditative feast of sound and sight. 77 hand-crafted bowls are imprinted with the chemical equations for rain and acid rain and filled with water. From a distance all the bowls look the same, it’s only on close examination the viewer can see the difference. The bowls are displayed under a shower of crystal raindrops and with a thunderstorm soundtrack and a trance-like video piece.

Incorporating the classic a cappella four part close harmonies of the barbershop genre, The Ashatones reintroduce barbershop into a modern day repertoire. Performing a wide range of music from early twentieth century barbershop songs, to musical theatre numbers and modern day pop arrangements, they offer barbershop singing as you’ve never heard or seen it before.
The Middle Ages are often characterised as dark, dirty and smelly, but the darkness made the moments of brightness more dazzling. Immerse yourself in the sensations of the medieval period: run your hands along the chalky smoothness of parchment, let the warm tang of gingerbread linger on your tongue, and experience the sharp contrast between darkness and light in a medieval shrine.

56 / Whale Song LCI Productions Ltd River Aire, Calls Wharf Car Park (access via Riverside Court), off The Calls, LS2 7JU 7.30 – 11pm (10 mins) The whale song is the most complex sound in the animal kingdom. Similar to human traditions, these ‘love songs’, mostly heard during the mating seasons, have led to whales being called the ‘composers of the oceans’. Allowing communication over vast distances, their songs are now threatened by man’s activities and increasing noise pollution. This magical combination of light, sound and water, reflects the dance and music of one of nature’s most wonderful creatures, depicting a majestic whale surfacing from the waters of the River Aire. To avoid large queues please only watch one cycle of the piece. Sponsored by
