THE VICTORIAN PAGEANT The Victorian Pageant, held in the private grounds of Windsor Castle on the evenings of 9, 10 and 11 May, has announced that three additional world-renowned international equestrian acts will be travelling over 5,000 miles to be part of the event.

Making the journey to the iconic setting will be performers from Oman, including 40 musicians playing alongside The Oman Royal Cavalry trick ride, while from the United Arab Emirates, and performing at Windsor for the first time, the Dubai Mounted Police will bring not only their 40-horse Musical Ride, which jumps through fire, but also the worldrenowned Dubai Police Pipe Band. The line-up of international acts will be further complemented by the exceptionally talented Hungarian Csikós, who will also be performing at Windsor Castle for the first time.

18 The ‘B’ word conundrum

February ended with some balmy weather. March has seen some really blowy gales and it looks as though we’re back to balmy for April. Predicting the weather is turning into a bit of a conundrum, perhaps imitating certain political matters also beginning with B. Pythagoras was good at solving problems and is credited with the idea of the world’s five climatic zones, perhaps he could have offered an opinion. Robert Emms is known for playing the Greek philosopher in the BBC series Atlantis and he’s now looking forward to a busy year. Robert chatted to Andrew Peters about his work and the soon-to-be-screened HBO Chernobyl drama.

Q Robert, you were born in Horley, Surrey. Do you have fond recollections of the town and return there at all?

A I do! I have very fond memories of my childhood there with my family, growing up with my brother. My old school actually recently named a new building for the drama department after me. Which I thought only happened if you were dead! Needless to say, I was very flattered.

Q Do you pay any attention to social media or a production’s ratings?

A I think it’s hard not to these days, the information is everywhere.

I try to switch myself off to any kind of negative comments unless they are constructive. Production ratings are important as they give an indication if a series might be recommissioned and whether more work lies ahead.

Q After studying at LAMDA, your career started with theatre work and it was from playing the lead in War Horse (at the New London Theatre) that Steven Spielberg saw you and offered you a part in the film. How did that feel at the time?

A It was a very exciting and a once in a career moment. Immediately after I met Steven on the stage, I walked off into the wings to leave as he and his producer Kathleen Kennedy went to exit the auditorium, and I gave a little celebratory yelp which I’m certain they heard!

Q Favourite actor – whose work do you always make a point of watching?

A Well, I have to say it changes all the time. There are so many really great actors I can’t possibly choose one. It’s because each and every actor offers something unique, and as much as this sounds like a cop out, it really is true. I enjoy watching actors who are understated and able to be chameleon-like with each role they play.

Q You played Vitas Gerulaitis in the film Borg vs. McEnroe – are you good at tennis and other sports?

A I’m absolutely rubbish at tennis. Fortunately, Vitas in the film is not seen playing tennis, but he is seen in the bars and clubs drinking and partying. Which is something I’m not inexperienced at!

Q What’s been your favourite part to date?

A Each part I’ve played has had something I always remember and take with me along the way. I think playing Rick Buckley in the film Broken directed by Rufus Norris was probably a highlight so far. A very emotional and challenging part surrounded by some great actors. >>>

It follows a mother and her daughters, who are Jehovah Witnesses, and is about what happens when one of the daughters questions her faith. Dan is a director I’d love to work with again. I think you can now watch it on Sky Cinema – PLUG! Q Do you find more light-hearted and easy-going character roles simpler to play than serious ones?

A I think every role brings a challenge to it.

Q Later this year you’re in HBO’s true story drama of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Can you tell us about the part you play?

A I play Toptunov, an engineer who was tasked with the test that led to the fateful accident. He and his colleague Akimov were ordered to run the test, even though they weren’t qualified to do it.

Q This year is going to be a big one for you with great roles in dramas each side of the Atlantic. You’ve kicked the year off by starring opposite Sheridan Smith as her lodger Glynn in ITV’s drama Cleaning Up. Sheridan is a very versatile actress – what was it like working with her?

A It was great! So great in fact that I’m actually working with her again on the BBC drama The Barking Murders.

Q What attracted you to the part in Cleaning Up? A I wanted to play a lighter, more comedic character. I try to accept as many different types of performance as possible so I don’t get stuck in the same type of role. It keeps me challenging myself and it’s more interesting.

Q A recent serious role was playing Steven in the film Apostasy, a British drama film about Jehovah Witnesses which was very well received at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Director Daniel Kokotajlo was nominated at this year’s BAFTAs. Can you tell us a little bit about the film?

Q Obviously far removed from Cleaning Up, this is serious drama about a real-life event. How do you prepare for such different subject matter?

A We were sent lots of research to learn how a nuclear power station works and also the beat by beat, minute by minute explanation of what happened. This was very important to research. We also had engineers who worked in a nuclear power station nearby to make sure we were authentic. It was interesting to research the time and place where these characters lived and the political climate: it informed the way they spoke, moved and thought.

Q Do you find it harder to play real-life or fictional characters?

A I think both can bring challenges. The challenge of playing a real person is that sometimes what is documented is only one side of their life. You have to fill in the blanks. With a fictional character, you have to build that whole back story yourself, if it’s not evident on the page already. I think it’s worth pointing out though that playing a real-life person is just your interpretation of them, you can’t become them!

Q What should people expect from Chernobyl?

A It is going to be epic with some incredible cinematic shots and performances. I think people will be captivated by this story told from many different perspectives with lots of different characters.

It tells the story of the engineers, the firemen, the army, the miners, the local people and the government. I think it was the biggest ensemble cast I’ve ever seen.

w Create a private haven: introduce a secluded area that feels intimate and tranquil, where a glass of wine can be sipped or where it is possible to sit and relax. Introducing vertical elements such as a semi transparent screen, a wall or a tall hedge works wonderfully, creating an unexpected space that breaks down the emptiness of a garden and spurs us on to walk and discover what’s beyond. w Use soft furnishings: in bold colours to bring the outdoor space together. w Disguise the ugly bits: every garden has a view or wall which shouldn’t be seen. Use plants and paths to lead eyes away, distracting them to look elsewhere. w Boundaries are key: use hedging to frame a sharp and clean lawn or a well-defined border. This will produce neat shapes that will help to keep maintenance to a minimum and will make the garden look crisp and fresh. w Let the plants speak for themselves: don’t overcrowd them, but give them space to breathe and become established. Think about it in terms of layers of vertical interest and bring some taller perennials towards the front to break the mould and create a dynamic border and more interesting look.

w Be bold: choose more of the same thing, so, for instance, put together two plants of the same colour (such as bronze fennel and black phormium) to create a good textural foil for the rest of the garden.

A similar result can be achieved by repeating companion shapes at different levels (such as round pots, round lawns, allium heads etc.). w Use splashes of colour: to draw attention, but keep the overall picture harmonious by restricting the colour palette. J

ura might be more famous now for its gin than George Orwell. Its Lussa 2016 is consumed more than 1984.

It’s a best-seller on the Inner Hebridean island where Eric Arthur Blair wrote his famous dystopian novel. Bottles simply fly off the shelves.

Lussa Drinks Company was formed by Alicia MacInnes, Claire Fletcher and Georgina Kitching. They live within a few miles of each other in the Lussa glen at the north end of the Isle of Jura where George Orwell wrote his famous novel 1984 between 1946–8. Originally entitled The Last Man in Europe, old Etonian Orwell described Jura as: “extremely unget-to-able”.

The Lussa (from Norse for salmon) ladies distill Lussa Gin themselves, hand-forage its ingredients and hand-label the bottles on the remote island that is thought to be named after goats or yew trees. They use a rowing boat called Rose to collect sea lettuce – a vital ingredient in their award-winning

product. It’s named after Claire’s mother-in-law, the island’s post lady, who delivers fan mail to Orwell’s uber-remote old holiday farmhouse home, Barnhill, which is now available to rent year-round.

Sleeping eight, prices start at £1,000 a week to experience literary history and be buffeted all day by the strong winds hitting the Argyll coast, which must have made typing difficult. Towels and linen are available for a £10 supplement.

The island has one road, one hotel and pub (Cath and Andy McCallum’s Jura Hotel) a school, kirk, an 1810 whisky distillery, two hundred people, 6,000 deer plus cattle and many grey seals, as well as a Portuguese gin still called Hamish.

The 35-mile long by eight-mile wide island is privately owned and managed by seven estates. It’s known for its three Paps (conical quartzite mountains), nine trout lochs, countless peat stooks, blanket bog and the Corryvreckan Whirlpool (the third largest in the world). >>>

Before he completed his last book, Orwell nearly drowned being rowed out to the islet of Eilean Mor. Barnhill is on the east side of the island, four miles from the nearest paved road and twenty-five from the pub and shop.

You can have a bath in the same dark, peaty water and castiron claw foot tub George did in the home now owned by Rob and Sophie Fletcher. Rob’s grandparents were Orwell’s landlords when he came to Jura to write and try to recover from TB. You can sleep in the bed in which he wrote, chain smoking and drinking gin for inspiration and strength against the damp. Sadly, there is no complimentary gin bottle to greet you. Yet. You can’t get to Jura without going to Islay – Banrigh nan Eilean, the Queen of the Inner Hebrides and the southernmost island. Part of the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata in the early Middle Ages, it is a beautiful, ancient, 239 square mile island of beinns (bens) and gleans, peat stacks and peat sausage piles, Viking graves, brochs (drystone towers), Macdonald strongholds, high Galloway drystone dykes, standing stones, abandoned homesteads, medieval chapels, shore streets, Neolithic chambered cairns, stirks (Highland heifers), tumbledown byres, old lead mines, disused lime kilns, malt barns, old herring stations, duns (forts) and mash tuns.

Whisky production started in the fifteenth century. Once there were over thirty distilleries. Now there are Caol Ila (Sound of Islay, With 70 per cent of UK gin now made north 1814), Bunnahabhain (river mouth, 1881), Ardbeg of the border, and gin set to outsell whisky by (small promontory, 1815), Laphroaig (slope of the bay, 2020, a nation of whisky makers and drinkers 1815), Lagavulin (mill hollow, 1815) and Kilchoman (St is rapidly turning into a nation of gin drinkers.

But the famous whisky isle now distills The Botanist Gin and Nerabus, made by Dr John Gow, a former forensic scientist and professor at Glasgow University, and his wife Dr Audrey Gow. Colonsay Island also has its own gin, Wild Thyme Spirits, made by a retired architect.

All the distilleries have tasting rooms and tours. Laphroaig was awarded a royal endorsement by Prince Charles (as the Duke of Rothesay) in 1994. For the price of a dram, fans can buy a lifetime lease of one square foot (930 cm2) of Laphroaig land. >>> PHOTO COPYRIGHT: LUSSAGIN.COM

However, with 70 per cent of UK gin now made north of the border, and gin set to outsell whisky by 2020, a nation of whisky makers and drinkers is rapidly turning into a nation of gin drinkers. Scotland now has its own Gin Trail comprising over fifty micro-distilleries making artisanal premium gins from all kinds of ingredients, including heather, tea and bladderwrack, as well as sea lettuce. The Botanist is made from twenty-two ingredients and nine aromatics.

The Paps of Jura can be seen from Port Askaig on Islay. With its numerous lochs, the island offers excellent brown trout as well as salmon fishing.

You can also go crab, scallop and lobster fishing from Port Ellen and Portnahaven.

Birdwatching is popular: twitchers visit the island for sightings of winter Barnacle Geese (as many as 10,000 can arrive on the same day) as well as Greenland WhiteFronted Geese, Whooper and Mute Swans, Slavonian Grebe, Corncrake, Hen Harriers, Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcons and plenty of Oystercatchers and Guillemots. There are plenty of kirks with cupstones and Gaelic carved crosses too.

The best place to stay on the Queen of the Hebrides is Campbell Gray Hotels’ newly-opened and restored luxury The Machrie Hotel and Golf Links, with its own seven-mile beach and famous and fabulous 1891 golf links, recently re-designed by DJ Russell and Ian Woosnam.

The big-windowed, 43-room luxury hotel houses the island’s first cinema and has the feeling of a very modern, high-ceilinged, high-end hunting lodge. The locals approve.

Although they grumble about the potholed approach road which seems to have been retained as a site of archaeological interest and historic significance.

There is a six hole ‘wee course’, virtual golf teaching facilities and ubiquitous, if small, spa. The magnificent Sunday lunch defeats most.

Room 26 is the best room in the hotel, looking over the eighteenth green and down the fairway. There is no room 101, that’s in Orwell, not Islay. The reborn Machrie is not to be feared. Although a peaty little Laphroaig 27-yearold single malt in your porridge in the morning helps to give some Hebridean courage. Or maybe a little Botanist or Professor’s Ruin on the side?

At times, they may feel ‘un-get-to-able’, but Jura and Islay are unforgettable and hard to leave. The gin and whisky souvenirs help with the memories. You can always blame your red face on the wind.

ON It’s over fifty years since the Ford Mustang almost, but not quite, stole the show in the cult film Bullitt.

Screen legend Steve McQueen and America’s best-known muscle car are synonymous with the legendary sixties’ film. Euan Johns looks at the special Bullitt version of this Ford Motor Company icon.

T

he Mustang is a true thoroughbred that has entered into motoring folklore throughout the world (thanks Steve). So how do you make a Bullitt Mustang? Simples. It’s very straightforward. Use the same dark highland green paint as for the car that careered around San Francisco’s streets for nigh on 10 minutes, tune the V8 engine, add some alloy wheels, alter the suspension, scatter a few Bullitt logos about, and hey presto.

Ford’s executive chairman Bill Clay Ford introduced the new Mustang in Barcelona in 2013, one of six cities where the new model was simultaneously revealed. The promise? Well, nothing less than world-class levels of performance and refinement, while embracing the Mustang’s half-century of heritage and status as a global icon.

That was the aim and at a starting price point of around £34,000 (duties paid), it’s an option for those who don’t want to stretch to a Mercedes coupé or similar. The Mustang looks the business with a lower bonnet design and optional spoiler maintaining its macho look, but providing a softer, slicker edge. Inside there’s plenty of room and the back seats really do function as seats. The boot is larger than rivals as well and can actually be used as one. >>>

love of learning Michael Connolly, headmaster of Cranmore School, examines the purpose of prep schools.

P

reparatory schools, more commonly known as ‘prep schools’, were originally set up to prepare boys to take the Common Entrance Exam at age 13 for entry to traditional senior schools, many of which provided boarding. These prep schools largely had an intake of pupils at age seven and from that point on there was a focus in getting over the hurdle of the exam at age 13.

In modern times, the situation is very different. First of all, whilst prep schools do continue to have a role to play in preparing children for their senior or secondary education, there is recognition for the fact that prep schools have an intrinsic worth for the quality of education they provide beyond a preparation for exams. Indeed, one could easily think that the real business of education does not get underway until children reach their teenage years. Of course, countless studies have highlighted the importance of early years’ education in its own right and it is this foundation on which everything else is built thereafter.

Tax implications of non-resident divorces Gillian Everall of Everfair Tax offers guidance to essence readers on navigating the pitfalls and tax implications of UK and non-resident divorces.

D

ivorce is always difficult, but there are additional tax complications if one partner is non-domiciled or has non-resident status. The earlier tax implications are considered, the better the results and we frequently navigate the pitfalls to maximise the tax reliefs available for our UK and overseas clients.

Tax provisions apply equally to divorces and the cessation of civil partnerships; and unbeknown to many, the permanent separation timing will make an impact, especially with Capital Gains Tax. Couples living together during the separation tax year may transfer assets to each other during the year on a ‘no gain no loss’ basis. However, for any subsequent years before the final dissolution order or decree absolute, assets are transferred at market value, and may generate significant tax liabilities. Post decree absolute transfers are not automatically at market value unless they are not ‘on arm’s length terms’.

With regard to property, the main residence is predominately exempt from Capital Gains Tax, but reliant on the occupation of the taxpayer, except for the final 18 months. Therefore, with a lengthy separation and divorce process, careful

planning is essential to preserve tax reliefs for the non-occupying spouse or civil partner. In addition, should the marital home be retained to ensure the protection of young or vulnerable family members, the tax circumstances vary again.

Tax benefits may be gained from dividing jointly owned investment properties. For non-residents, non-residential capital gains tax ‘NRCGT’ only applies to gains on UK residential property from 6 April 2015. A tax return must be submitted to HMRC within 30 days of disposal, along with payment of the tax.

Importantly, a payer is not able to claim tax relief on maintenance payments and they are taxfree for the recipient in the UK, but some countries will apply tax to spousal and child maintenance.

In all cases tax advice in the local jurisdiction should be sought. For a resident non-domicile remittance basis user, transfers should be carefully considered to avoid taxable remittances.

This term can refer to any number of trades people, specialist or labourers, appointed by the Contractor to fulfil a specific role, for example, electricians, carpenters or plasterers.

3 Consultants. The term consultant usually refers to a party providing professional services. Two common consultants are: a) The Architect (designer). An Architect will be involved in the design and planning of your works. They will draw up plans and specifications for the Contractor to use to build the works, assist with a planning application and may be involved in managing the works. The Architect may also appoint

sub-consultants to provide technical assistance, for example, a qualified engineer to carry out structural calculations. b. Quantity Surveyor (QS). A QS will help to control the project budget. They can be involved with estimation of quantities at inception and will value the work as it progresses: their appointment is likely to save you money.

4 Suppliers. All of the materials for your project will need to be supplied by a manufacturer, builders’ merchant or other stockist. If your Contractor is purchasing materials on your behalf, you will need to clearly communicate your requirements. If you are purchasing items be aware of delivery/ production time and ensure they are available when required to keep the programme on track. Also remember that the cost of materials can fluctuate, especially on large, long-term projects, you should ensure your contract deals with this possibility.

Whilst each part of the construction team will fulfil a different role, there are several key themes that will impact the entire team and that you should consider at the outset of the project.

Do I need a construction contract?

Contracts don’t need to be written down to be binding, however to best protect yourself and your project it is always advisable to have a written form of agreement. If you don’t it can be difficult to keep track of what has been agreed and more importantly prove this in the case of a dispute. A written contract can also give you legal protection for your project and a good contract will offer some protection against spiralling costs or extensive delays. It is worthwhile spending time at the outset working

information provided in good time. Where a delay is outside the parties’ control, a good contract will guide the parties in agreeing extensions of time and additional costs, or disallowing the same as relevant.

out what you want to achieve, who will be responsible for what and a budget. You can then ensure that your contract accurately reflects this.

There are several standard forms of contract available with guidance as to the type of project they are suitable for, including JCT Home Owners or Minor Works contract, RIBA’s Domestic Building Contract and the Federation of Master Builders’ contracts. The contract should suit your project: a contract that is too complex and not administered properly won’t help either party.

Whilst it is important for each party employed on the project to have a written contract, the Client may not be a party to every individual contract. The Client might engage the Contractor and Architect directly, they in turn will engage relevant Sub-contractors or Sub-consultants. The Contractor and Architect contracts should provide that they will retain liability for the proper execution of the entire project, so even if something goes wrong down the chain they remain accountable.

You can also protect yourself by entering into a collateral warranty with important Subcontractors. For example, your Contractor may employ a mechanical and electrical engineer to undertake important works and the Client has an interest in ensuring that they are properly completed. As above, the Contractor should retain liability for all sub-contracted works, but what happens if the Contractor is insolvent or has ceased trading?

A collateral warranty will give you a direct right of recourse against the Sub-contractor.

All important Sub-contractors, particularly

those undertaking design works, should be required to provide warranties to the Client.

Project control: The holy trinity – Cost, Time and Quality.

Cost. Regardless of whether a contract is described as fixed or target cost or otherwise, there will be circumstances when it becomes reasonable for price to be adjusted. Sometimes the cause may be outside of the parties’ control, i.e. the project is damaged due to an ‘act of God’, however Client ‘changes’ can also drive up costs. For example, something as simple as changing the location of a plug socket may require the electrician to return, the original position will need to be made good which may involve filling in, a plaster skim and the area repainted if it has been decorated, and so on. These sorts of changes can amount to a variation of the original contract and the parties should agree any additional costs involved before they are implemented.

Time. As with cost, factors outside of the parties’ control can delay a project, for example certain activities cannot be carried out in the rain or during very low or high temperatures.

A Sub-contractor who has left site may be needed to implement changes, but they may not be available immediately. Even if design changes can be incorporated into the normal run of the works, they may take longer to execute and your Contractor may have other work booked in. Most programmes will allow for some delay and the Client can assist by ensuring changes are communicated and

Quality. What standard of work have you agreed on and paid for? The starting position is that work will be carried out with reasonable skill and care. If a particular skill, trade or profession is involved, the contract should refer to the task being carried out with the knowledge, training and experience of a person with that particular expertise. If you expect a higher standard of care and you are paying extra for this then your contract should be amended to reflect this. If you require something to be fit for a particular purpose this should also be explicitly stated.

As regards materials, the starting position is that they should comply with British or equivalent EU standards, be selected in accordance with the “Good Practice in the Selection of Construction Materials” guide and not be deleterious to people or the building. Any more specific requirements should be communicated to the Contractor and stated in the contract documents.

Further, the parties need to know who will select materials: does the team have autonomy to select materials in line with the brief or must the Client approve all materials? The position may be somewhere in between with the Client specifying finishes, but leaving the choice of ‘hidden’ materials to the team. If the Client does want final sign off, do they have the time to dedicate to this task, bearing in mind a delay in instructions, or change of heart, could have time and cost implications?

Will your portfolio sink or swim?

Simon Lewis, CEO at Partridge Muir & Warren, provides an update on what’s happening in financial markets and talks about the need for portfolio resilience to keep your money afloat.

I

n February I commented that the investment outlook appeared more favorable than had been priced into financial markets at the year-end and I am pleased to report that investor sentiment has indeed improved; financial markets have recovered some of the ground lost in the final quarter of 2018. There are two key factors that have been driving this recovery, although sentiment remains fragile and investors should be prepared for more choppy water in the shorter term.

The UK media spotlight has been firmly focused on the Parliamentary pantomime that has surprised, disappointed and bored most of us in equal measure. With Easter fast approaching, who would have thought that we would still have no real idea about how (or indeed whether) the UK will depart the EU? Nevertheless, the UK’s rather embarrassing predicament is not high on the list of concerns for global investors and their mood has been steered primarily by other issues.

US Federal Reserve The US Federal Reserve seems to have pulled off a complete U-turn in respect of monetary policy guidance. At the end of last year, the interest rate increased and investors were warned to prepare themselves for at least a further two rate increases in 2019.

However, the latest guidance is that interest rates may not increase as much as

feared and perhaps not at all in 2019. Perhaps more significantly, the program of quantitative tightening, the reversing of the quantitative easing process introduced in the aftermath of the financial crisis, is likely to end in 2019.

Why is this important and why is it good for financial markets? Put simply, higher interest rates mean a higher cost of borrowing for companies which in turn reduces profits.

Shareholders rely on the delivery of high rates of profit growth to justify buoyant share prices so anything that might get in the way of this puts downward pressure on share prices.

Secondly, the quantitative tightening process reduces liquidity in key financial sectors and this has been encouraging volatility.

The US-China trade war Until recently the US-China trade war has been high on rhetoric, but in the overall scheme of things, relatively low in terms of impact. Nevertheless, the unilateral tariffs imposed by both sides are starting to bite and have a noticeable impact on global trade.

As a consequence, economists are predicting the global economy will slow faster than is already likely. So far this year, trade war rhetoric has softened and a pathway to a resolution and end to hostilities is very positive for financial markets who as described above, crave the conditions that will support good levels of growth in corporate profits.

Portfolio resilience As wealth managers, there are many issues that we will need to navigate on behalf of our clients during the remainder of 2019 and in addition to seeking the best opportunities for return, we also look for opportunities to perform resilience; so that our clients can sleep easy, whatever the financial climate.

I am often asked what methodology we use when we review client portfolios. In truth, we use lots of different processes and methods to construct portfolios; one of the key things for us is diversification. We do not like to see anything more than, let’s say, 1% of a portfolio invested in any single company. The reason for that is that if a company were to unexpectedly fail, any money invested in it would be lost forever; whereas money invested more broadly should eventually recover when the financial climate improves.

One aspect we also look at is diversification benefit, which is on the same theme but slightly different. When building a client’s portfolio, we always ensure we engineer in plenty of negative correlation. In other words, we choose investments that will behave differently for a given set of circumstances.

As a consequence, when some investments rise in value others will fall and vice versa, so that the overall portfolio value sees a much smoother return. This method significantly reduces volatility and that is very important for most of our clients.

Charting a course When we are thinking about investments we always have plenty of ideas on our radar.

One of the key themes that we are wrestling with currently is at what point do we start to re-allocate money back to the UK? At the moment, the UK equity market is in the doldrums relative to its peers, particularly in the smaller and medium-sized company sectors, where we think companies are quite significantly undervalued and for obvious reasons. At some point, it will be time to return focus to the UK in order to benefit from what we see will be quite a strong recovery in the medium-term.

Our clients have been well-served by the approach that we’ve taken to investment in UK equities. In the run up to the EU referendum, we cut our exposure to UK equity funds from 52% all the way down to 43%. In fact, in the aftermath of the referendum, we have reduced further as a result of the political uncertainty that has prevailed and our allocation currently stands at 33%. In due course, I’m sure that’s going to rise, but I don’t think the time is right just yet.

My point here is that, with the uncertainty that investors face in 2019, it is important to make sure that your investments are being regularly reviewed. It may be the case that investor sentiment has improved in the last few months, but as investors, we never quite know what is on the horizon.

Regularly reviewing your allocation to particular investments and ensuring you have a diversified portfolio is imperative to enable you to keep your head above water, whatever the global economy has to throw at you.

If the above concepts are not familiar, you should talk to your existing wealth manager to find out what they are doing to provide your portfolio with resilience. If you are not reassured that your portfolio has the level of resilience that you need, you should come and talk to PMW. Stephanie Brookes, BBC Radio London food expert, offers her pick of an eating establishment for this month, Tamarind in Mayfair.

here comes a point in the life of any restaurant when the inevitable revamp is on the cards: to facelift or not to facelift? I’m of the mind that if the food is exceptional, then why fix what is already near perfect? My case in point is the distinctly brilliant Tamarind in Mayfair which has long been one of my must-go places for outstanding Indian cuisine. Its stellar reputation and superlative dishes earned it the first Michelin star ever to be awarded to an Indian restaurant in the UK. Tamarind recently underwent an eight-month re-build, introducing an entirely new colour scheme, displaying a more serene colour palette with hints of pink, crème and gold, and with sumptuous, offwhite leather booths in the two separate dining areas – all in all a rather different look than before.

As a fan of the ‘old’ Tamarind, I feel it didn’t need a revamp; I even quite like it when a restaurant shows its age – there’s character in that, surely?

However, in London’s highly competitive restaurant scene, change is inevitable and this ever-loyal patron was intrigued to try out this newer version.

I was relieved to find that the initial greeting was just as warm and welcoming as it always had been.

We were seated at the top floor dining area: a bright, open space, ideal for more casual lunchtime fare.

The menu itself has a much lighter feel to it, with plenty of appealing small plates to start proceedings. And as the spring season unfolds, so does its wonderful choice of vegetables. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to begin with an order of Grilled Asparagus – while not the most immediate mouth-watering choice – a must-try for me. The lightly-charred exterior revealed a perfectly crisp, al dente bite, served with an accompaniment of spiced tomato chutney. Perfect food on which to graze while sampling Tamarind’s newly-crafted

cocktails. Try the Sharbat Mule, a tangy concoction of Belvedere vodka, kumquat, mango and a noteworthy addition of fresh turmeric giving the cocktail its wonderful golden yellow hue, but also adding savoury, bitter notes.

A second starter of Rabbit Seekh Kebab offered succulent minced rabbit with a generous filling of dried tomato and raisin. The sweet, slightly gamey flavour of the rabbit stood up to the piquant filling and made for a rather moreish small plate. I’m embarrassed to say our delightful waiter had no sooner served us the dish than it was immediately consumed at warp speed! Thankfully another small plate arrived which I promised (to myself) to linger over. This was on course to becoming the fastest ‘leisurely’ Sunday lunch on record…

A much-anticipated plate of Tandoori Konkan Prawn arrived with its appetising burnished outer coating revealing plump, juicy prawns – tandoor has to be the most delicious method for cooking this glorious ingredient. If I was to offer any lunchtime menu suggestion, then order this dish as an additional main without hesitation.

A decadent looking entrée of Hyderabadi Goat Chop Curry was a masterful composition of presentation, with the chops artfully stacked towards each other and looking rather majestic, I must say.

The meat is slow-cooked with whole garam masala and coconut. As a fan of goat curry, this didn’t fail to disappoint; delicate, grassy notes from the meat and so perfectly tender it didn’t need much persuasion to

fall off the bone. A deeply flavourful garam sauce coated the meat and left just enough to mop up with the accompanying garlicky naan.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the charm and authenticity of this Mayfair stalwart hadn’t been painted over along with the actual interior and still retained the quality that has become synonymous with the Tamarind name. Luckily, a fresh lick of paint seems to have done this beloved restaurant no harm whatsoever, in fact, it may have given a new lease of life to this grand dame of Mayfair. essence INFO

Hill House Farm

Shirlee Posner introduces readers to an idyllic family run farm in the Surrey Hills, dedicated to connecting people to the countryside and with a ‘farm to fork’ ethos.

I

an Jones’ growing business is set in the gorgeous Surrey Hills. Hill House Farm is home to a growing herd of rare breed pigs and sheep with Gloucester Old Spots and Southdown sheep the chosen breeds, famed for their delicious meat, but also, in the case of the sheep, as a traditional indigenous species to the area.

The farm contains a production Ian Jones unit where Ian (a former chef) creates dry cure bacon, aromatic hams and a range of pork-based ready meals. But Ian doesn’t come from a farming family and the 17 hectare (40 acre) farm was originally purchased by his parents to keep their collection of vintage cars and haulage tractors. The business today was formed from a plan that Ian hatched in 2017.

Ian left school and trained as a chef, but decided this was not the career path he wanted.

He went to university and took a degree in catering and hotel management, leading to a job within sales and events for a large hotel group: good experience as it turns out for what was to come next. Ian’s final job before creating his current business was for a private equity company where he felt the business ethos was at odds with his own personal mindset. He decided at that point to do something different where he could make his own mark. Mixed in with this was a love of the outdoors and education, which he had stayed close to whilst running a local scout group.

Ian undertook four courses at River Cottage in Axminster, Dorset. Curing was one of the four courses and Ian was immediately drawn to this.

The family farm already had four pigs reared for its own use, so he was not a novice in the field of animal husbandry. He was keen to recreate some of the products he had made on the course and started to hatch a business plan.

Ian decided to expand the number of pigs and sheep and to produce top quality dry cured bacon and ham to sell locally, working with a local butcher to create sausages using Hill House Farm pork. Local is an important ethos for this business and it currently only sells within a 30 mile radius to local farm shops, pubs and restaurants.

Creating a new brand involved getting a designer on board and Ian could not have made a better choice than Surrey-based artist Louise Dunckley from Dorking-based Illustration Prints.

Her beautiful prints featuring iconic Surrey landscapes are much loved by locals (I have one of Leith Hill by Louise in my house) and her designs for Ian’s brand are perfect. Hill House Farm’s branded marquee for farmers’ markets and new packaging for the ready meals are unique and help to tell his Surrey Hills’ story.

Last summer, after just three months of trading, Hill House joined the Open Farm Sunday Campaign, part of a programme by LEAF (Linking Environment to Farming). Hill House was delighted to welcome over 750 people to the farm. All three generations of the family pulled together and swept, cleaned, baked and organised a fun event. Vintage vehicles were on show, sheep were shorn and food on offer included Ian’s super stuffed sausage rolls fresh from the oven. As Ian says, it was a fabulous opportunity to get across to visitors what their new venture was all about.

Ian says he also wanted the opportunity to show off the ‘farm to fork’ rare breed pork and lamb hand reared on the farm. He continued: “We pride ourselves on creating high-quality products with great provenance and low food miles. We believe it’s really important to know where food comes from and what’s gone into creating it, particularly for children, so what better way to impart that knowledge than with a giant show and tell?”

In addition to Hill House’s own business, others were invited to be part of the day. Handpicked for Dorking, who work with local arts and craft companies, provided a variety of stalls from printed bags to natural beauty products and jewellery. A soft drinks stall was run by Cancer Research who raised over £500.

When I spoke to Ian he was excited to have just launched his range of ready meals. A man that likes to collaborate, it was great to see that one of his dishes contains a locally produced porter-style English beer ‘Black Noise’ from Dorking Brewery. Hill House Farm’s core products have a local theme too, utilising local cider for hams, honey from their own hives and herbs from the farm’s vegetable garden.

This business is a welcome addition to the Surrey food scene as a thoughtful, well-executed, professionally-run enterprise. Its products are delicious and fulfill a growing desire for locally-prepared merchandise with low food miles and provenance that can be trusted.
