BOODLES DIAMONDS

The 4Cs is the industry standard for assessing diamonds. Cut, colour, clarity and carat weight are the key factors that determine the quality of a diamond.

B

oodles carefully consider all these factors to ensure your heart skips a beat when you glimpse their diamonds for the first time. A diamond is a wonder of nature – a rare and beautiful thing – but it is only when a master cutter gets to work that its true brilliance is revealed. Boodles source diamonds from a close network of suppliers. Even their melee diamonds (the small shoulder stones used in clusters) are top “Collection quality”, the whitest, brightest and cleanest diamonds you can buy, with the full number of facets. The cut of a stone also refers to its shape. Boodles use the round brilliant cut the most. Its multi-faceted, symmetrical design gives an exceptional sparkle and works well on engagement rings. Boodles incorporate a huge variety of cuts into their jewellery – brilliant, oval, emerald, pear, marquise, cushion, heart, princess, briolette and radiant Most recently, Boodles sourced some stunning Flanders cut diamonds, similar to a princess cut but with more light-reflecting facets. They are also using Ashoka cut diamonds in designs, these are rarely seen in the UK. The Ashoka is the most difficult diamond cut to produce and there are only a few cutters in the world who have mastered the art. Modified from the antique cushion cut, the Ashoka has 62 scissor-cut facets – more than any other diamond – and rounded corners, which gives it brilliance beyond compare. Boodles are the only jeweller in Britain to offer Ashoka diamonds. This year, they have expanded their Ashoka jewellery range with some wonderfully sparkly engagement rings.

Preparing, planning and budgeting for your wedding can be daunting and become stressful. In this special essence supplement we offer ideas, advice and tips to help make it all that little bit easier.

There’s now an increasing trend for personalisation as couples strike out to mark their special day as being uniquely their own. This may involve the help of a wedding planner or be almost completely DIY. One bit of advice, if it’s the latter make sure you have enough hands willing to help. It’s all about the couple, of course, but with a little careful thought family, friends and guests can be given a day they’ll remember and talk about always. When everything is planned you can relax and look forward to it. PHOTO COPYRIGHT: JOHN NASSARI

1066 | AUTUMN 2016

If music be the food of love...

“The Johannes’s piano was a really exciting project for us. Like a fine tailored suit, we spent countless hours meeting with the couple, getting to know their preferences and ensuring it was the perfect fit for them.” Chris Norman

W

ell the bard knew it and musicians Venetia and Ben Johannes knew it too. They married last year and the couple was given a rather unusual, but very fitting wedding gift by family and friends. A present on a much grander scale than the typical household accoutrements – a piano to be exact. The Gloucestershire couple visited the Cambridge workshop of world-renown piano restorers 1066 to create a bespoke, playable ‘work of art’. They selected a 1930s’ Blüthner grand piano, for its warmth and transparency of tone – a perfect fit and sound for the living room of their Victorian Gothic Manor.

An heirloom and work of art

This was no ordinary restoration but one that fine-tuned this instrument into a stunning heirloom. Craftsmen used their skill to breathe new life into the Leipzig grand, with extensive, bespoke marquetry that depicted an Art Nouveau image of the couple on the lid, surrounded by a swirling border of intertwined oak and pine leaves to echo the family crest. It was truly music to their ears and a beautiful way to merge family and art into a unique piece to pass onto future generations. Rather than buying a piano ‘off the shelf’, they decided to buy a beautiful, mahogany Blüthner, and decorate it according to their own design. The bespoke elements, which included blank spaces left ready for later images and people in their life, means it’s a truly unique piece that’s personal to them and will change and grow as they do as a family. The couple thought a piano decorated with marquetry would be more unusual and visually arresting than the more traditional painting. Something that could go down in history as really special, yet also remember the friends and guests who contributed to this amazing instrument. More symbolically the two of them may sing different notes from time to time, but together they harmonize. A marriage gift of a piano, rather than a set of towels, symbolises that idea. The piano will contribute to the family home, and to their own history. In the end the instrument is a story in itself, and they will hope to pass it on to posterity.

Chris Norman 1066

1066 was founded by Mr Norman, a physicist who wanted to apply the meticulousness of science to the restoring and building of fine pianos. Today, the Norman family devotes more than 10,000 square feet of workshops to piano restoration. One of only a handful of piano restorers still in existence in the world 1066 has been fastidiously handcrafting pianos and restoring heirloom pieces for more than 40 years, over three generations. Each meticulous, bespoke piano restoration takes up to 300 hours of painstaking work with proven, ancient processes combined with modern technology. 1066 is often asked to make matching music cabinets, stools, pictures and mirror frames and uses its unrivaled skill to restore other precious family heirlooms.

here’s obviously a budget for any wedding and many things to fit into that. Priorities will vary, some will spend more on the venue, some on flowers, food or entertainment, and it’s a purely personal choice. “For some there’s no more important time to express their true and most authentically beautiful self than on the day when they and their partner look into each another’s eyes and declare eternal love,” Lucia explained. Lucia continued: “Many brides are desperate to be seen as an individual. They cannot find the so-called ‘dream dress’ off the peg that quite expresses their own style and personality. It’s wonderful to see that desperation melt away as we suggest the bespoke dress’s absolutely perfect cut, colour and detailing to show off her particular and unique beauty and femininity. Often, a bride seeking a bespoke design service will know pretty well what she wants but cannot find it or she may need some professional guidance to assist her in identifying what suits and expresses her best.” There are many advantages in having a bride’s dress or entire outfit designed specially, mainly: l Being seen in the same dress as someone else any day of the week isn’t an uplifting feeling, so on this special day, a bride wants to hear drawn breath for all the right reasons – principally for “Lucia is a modern day looking distinctively and uniquely enchanting. alchemist responsible l The shape and fit of the wedding gown is made to measure; the choice of silks and laces are made from for miraculously a selection of the world’s finest fabrics. By working with one creative vision, the end result is harmonious. “As creative design director, I will conceive the ensemble (head to toe outfit) and then work with a team of skilled craftsmen and women to produce each piece individually. By way of example, this means that the pearls and crystals that have been intricately hand sewn onto her dress can be used to create the exquisite matching embellishments on her shrug and head piece; her shoes can be made from the same silk roll as her dress and her jewellery or back jewels crafted to make just the right breath-taking statement,” Lucia told us. With bespoke more than anything, Lucia believes it’s the magical client experience that is the bedrock of what makes the design journey so special. This in itself is a kind of marriage, where together a designer and a bride transform a dream to a unique creation. Costs are not as prohibitive as one may think. Many top tier designer dresses bought off the peg can be more than a bespoke dress. The State of Grace by Lucia Silver starts at £3,500–£4,000. Such irresistible temptation and something well worth considering. l

o matter how ‘white’ a wedding is it does help to add little pops or accents of colour. Bridesmaids’ dresses are a case and point, if dressed in colour with the bride in white, then the bride can appear to be highlighted and more distinct while the bridesmaids form a separate point of attention. When selecting a colour for the bridesmaids’ dresses, bear in mind the skin tone and hair colour of the girls. Generally, acceptance is brighter colours suit most complexions and pastel hues suit fairer complexions. If your bridesmaids have an array of skin tones then select tones that suit them and the wedding design. Green is a good complement to shades of white, and other more muted pastel palettes can also enliven an underlying colour scheme without providing too stark a contrast. Don’t rule out metallic hues – think rose, yellow or gold, or a rich copper, which will add a dash of opulence to proceedings. Bridesmaids are an important part of any wedding so don’t forget to style them up with chic accessories and shoes. Consider personalised hotel robes for the hen weekend and preparing on the day to add a touch of fun, or a gift of some earrings or bracelets they will treasure and always wear.

Consider personalised hotel robes for the hen weekend and preparing on the day to add a touch of fun.

Top tip If one of your friends is pregnant,

there’s no reason she can’t be a bridesmaid. Take her dress-hunting first, because she’ll be the hardest to find something for. Go for softer, flowing materials to accommodate an expanding tummy and, remember, no stilettos.

he time of the service, venue and chosen theme will help determine whether men wear morning, lounge or dinner suits. If the wedding is black tie, best man and ushers should rent the same tuxe as the groom. Even if casual, it’s helpful to give guidelines. Maybe you have a preferred suit you would like them wear for the day? The easiest way to co-ordinate is color. For a well groomed look, book a trip to the barbers for that perfect close shave or designer beard. Perhaps even a spa day for the best man and ushers for all their hard work. Quirky groom’s keepsake to his best man and ushers could be personalised cufflinks, or simple ‘groom’ and ‘usher’ ones are fun, perhaps a hipflask to calm the speech nerves, or treat them to some new aftershave.

ook your consultation and make a plan. The first step is getting yourself in with a therapist who will plan a step-by-step guide on what your concerns are and how to treat them. Make sure you do this with plenty of time to spare as some treatments have a longer process than you think and include everything from stubborn areas of fat and dry, flaky elbows to pigment lurking on the back of your hands! Just before the big day you can re-energise and boost radiance with exfoliating facial treatments such as microdermabrasion or even a light Vitamin C skin peel. This will minimise dull uneven skin tone and there will be very little flaking and maximise on a healthy, youthful glow by encouraging nutrients to the surface. These can be combined with Dermalux, a combination LED light therapy used to treat various skin concerns such as rejuvenation, Rosacea and acne, to name a few. Get your eyebrows in shape! our daughter is going to look beautiful, that’s taken as read, so don’t forget to think about yourself. Consider what your style is and begin shopping at least six months in advance to get exactly what you want. This is an important event, and you don’t want to have to settle for something that isn’t quite right. Don’t forget to pick a dress you’ll be happy to wear again. After the last picture has been taken and the last handful of confetti thrown, you’ll still have the dress. Make the right choice and you’ll have a great style that will work for cocktail parties, other weddings or even a nice dinner. Something simple, like a suit or a gown with a jacket, can be worn more than once. one are the days where a couple would select the one wedding venue in their hometown as the number and variety of wedding venue options have increased greatly. Garden weddings have been popular this year as has the trend for couples to design their own wedding to suit to reflect their lifestyle and what they are all about. With the rise of wedding blogs and pinterest more and more couples are taking the step and tailoring a space that is unique to them. Couples are also looking to make it a relaxed day for friends and family, and move some of the focus away from themselves. Whatever is decided here are a few essential tips: Logistics Remembering to consider the logistics of any venue can save heartache later on. Consider how many guests the venue accommodates, the season, time of day, and any special needs your guests might have. If the venue holds weddings all year round, make sure you ask questions such as: Is there heat and air conditioning? Is there an adequate alternative space if it rains? Is the lighting sufficient for the evening?

FOCAL POINT DESIGN’S ALICE TEA CUP FOR A TOUCH OF VINTAGE GLAMOUR

he wedding date appears a long way off but it’s never too early to start planning as there’s a lot to think of. There are companies that can ease the burden and make it a pleasure rather than the time consuming chore it can become. Focal Point Designs is one, run by Katie Wood, Managing Director. Focal Point Designs create memorable experiences for luxury events and special occasions. The company excels at themed decor styling, high-end floral arrangements and accessories. Catering for private parties, functions and corporate events, they also offer a full professional wedding service with a personal touch. The aim is to allocate as much time and offer the flexibility required to accomplish a couple’s ideas on décor. This is, after all, the focus at any wedding, providing the romantic ambiance and a wow factor. Once described by a couple as the ‘fairy godmother of weddings’, Katie started the company with the intention to offer more than just the floral requirements for any size of wedding. “Having just one point of contact takes the stress off the couple from start to finish, we can project manage bespoke ceremony decor, lighting, sashes and runners, garlands, vase hire and other accessory hire, like a wedding post box. Even a themed sweet table can be planned,” says Katie. Katie likes to be challenged, and if this involves designing and making a 4,000 rose arch, bespoke love hearts from wicker and rattan filled with lights, bespoke garlands for inside and out, or decorated hanging lanterns for marquees, then she will make their wish come true. One of Focal Point Designs most popular floral designs is one metre LSA vases for entrances, filled with green cane, and a voluptuous display of white hydrangeas and exotic foliage (colours can be changed to suit the theme). It’s also about the finer details from accessories, handmade bride and groom names for the back of a chair, bespoke flower girl baskets and head garlands and other touches around the reception. Focal Point Designs works with many corporate companies and private homes, designing and making faux flower arrangements. This has now become one of the company’s big success stories. Katie says: “One of the things most couples say to me is how much there is to plan and how they are so pleased to find a company like Focal Point Designs which helps take a large amount of their ‘to do’ list into hand.”

hen deciding on floral arrangements, focus on key pieces rather than spreading flowers too thinly to produce an inane display no one really notices. This is where a planner and some DIY can work: the planner producing the central pieces, the couple finding cost effective and eye-catching decorations. This year has seen brides wishing to stand out as individuals and has led to more innovation in the market place, creativity being more important than other considerations. For ideas look through magazines and online (especially Pinterest) for styles, designs, “There is no rule in colour co-ordination and texture. the arrangement Once the church and venue have been decided, look at the surroundings such as entrance, gardens and of a bouquet. The focal points leading into rooms. Church displays can most important rule be moved to the reception afterwards, so plan what can in floral art is that be transferred. Don’t let flowers go to waste, tell your there are no rules.” guests to take the flowers at the end of the evening. Nicolas Barelier No handbook will tell you what the cost will be. It’s only when you have given an initial list to your florist or planner, with sizes, styles and places to be decorated, you’ll be able to get an idea of cost. Look at faux flower options too, for weddings abroad and if you have certain arches or stairways to be decorated. A company with a wide portfolio of services can offer more choice and adapt what they might have to suit. Discuss variations with your florist and event planner, ask to see images of previous work and use your Pinterest images to confirm your ideal setting. One month before, go through everything agreed with your original images and any new images you may have. You have time before a florist orders (one week) to change a few things from that originally decided. Be aware, your favourite flower might not always be in season. Spring flowers such as tulips, daffodils and lily of the valley are here a short period of time, daisies throughout the year. Most roses (the typical wedding rose being the avalanche) are available all year, as are orchids, lisianthus, gypsophila (known to brides as baby’s breath), sweet peas, gerberas, calla and oriental lilies. You can do your own research online but more often, with a few hints, your florist will make your day astounding with an array of different varieties in your chosen colour. Don’t be fooled that adding foliage is going to make your arrangement cheaper. Using eucalyptus gives class, silvery colour and style to your arrangement, along with soft and hard ruscus, and many other varieties. With plenty of preparation you can be sure of a truly beautiful result and if you are lucky enough to have a large budget, flowers can certainly provide that distinctive wow-factor.

Food for thought

I

t’s already been a long day and after the wedding service, greetings and drinks, people will be in need of some sustenance. There are numerous options and of course it’s always a personal choice whether to opt for a formal dinner or have a more laissez-faire approach. This year has seen the following trends: l Rustic and less formal dining with people still opting for a sit down meal but with sharing platters and family-style dining in place of individual mains, starters and desserts. l Food vans either throughout the reception or instead of a formal wedding breakfast, or for later in the evening. l Locally sourced organic, fresh and artisan food. l Comfort food such as pizza, burgers, hot dogs and fish and chips. All popular but they have to be attractively presented. l Brunch. Weddings aren’t just for the afternoon now with an increasing number being held in the morning. l Drinks stations, be they staffed or diy, or perhaps a Prosecco bar of cocktails. l Street and ethnic food seems to just about everywhere at the moment. This popular trend from restaurants and pop ups is now filtering down into the wedding world. l Late night snacks. After the dancing has taken its toll, people need to recharge. Snacks are a great way to keep things on the move or satisfy end-of-evening hunger pangs. Organise food stations with a small buffet of mini hot dogs, burgers, sushi, or perhaps for the sweeter tooth, a sundae bar. l The following day. The wedding may be over but it’s great to continue the celebration with a hog roast in a relaxed, informal atmosphere where guests can recount the day and say goodbyes.

fter watching the Great British Bake Off we may all think we can do it but cakes can be true works of art and are an important part of the décor at the reception. Not only should it taste delicious, but look beautiful too. Tall cakes create a dramatic impact, ideal for reception venues with high ceilings, and for brides who want to leave a lasting impression. Add visual interest by choosing different shapes for a white or ivory cake, striking a balance between traditional and modern. You could choose a different shape for each tier, making your top tier a unique focal point. Non-traditional shaped tiers, like hexagons and ovals, make the cake even more out of the ordinary as do vibrant colours. A simple monogram plaque is an easy and inexpensive way to put your own stamp on a wedding cake. If a couple is particularly design led, they may even have a specially made set of initials, crest or other symbol that represents them. Other options to add glamour are little jewels to adorn your wedding cake; metallic coloured sequins in silver, gold or bronze are popular. If fruit cake is not for you, fresh fruit and chocolate can look magnificent and double as dessert. Finally, think about bringing together other aspects of your décor and colour palette by incorporating fresh flowers. Flowers can also be a creative cake divider, to give the wedding cake a light, gravity-defying look.

alta? Magaluf? Benidorm? Barcelona? Hmm…Bit obvious for a hen weekend. Bit old hat actually. So no thanks. Instead there’s a far more stylish and exotic way to enjoy exciting quality time with your best girlfriends. “It’s on a ‘Dar Jaguar Sex and the City (SATC) hen weekend’ in Marrakech. And it’s little more than three hours flight away,” Lucia Silver, owner of the Dar Jaguar boutique hotel, explains this very special girl’s getaway. A worse-for-wear future bride totters into a bar, she asks: “Was I here last night? I don’t remember a thing, except I had £200 cash in my purse and now it’s gone”. The barman replies: “You sure were here. You and your friends drank yourselves into oblivion.” The woman says: “Oh, thank God, I thought I’d lost it”. That oft-recounted story emphasises one of the ordinary and unimaginative ways to celebrate pre-nups these days. If you want something really different and utterly unforgettable then this luxurious mini break could be what you are looking for. “What originally attracted me to the idea was my own experience of a romantic escape to Marrakech”, says Lucia. “Entranced by the city’s mystery, beauty and exoticism, I knew I couldn’t leave without holding on to a piece of this magic world. I’m not alone. Inspiring individuals like Yves Saint Laurent and Churchill loved it, as does Sarah Jessica-Parker and the Rolling Stones. But you don’t need a Hollywood income afford it. The cost to have this beautiful riad all to yourself is only £65 per person per night (based on ten), including breakfast on an enthralling rooftop terrace, waited on by four English-trained staff including a talented chef.

Marrakech The gateway between Europe and North Africa, Morocco has always walked the tightrope between these two continents. Its Islamic heritage and imperial medinas give it a distinctly non-European flavor. The French colonialism influence, coupled with a cosmopolitan city culture and a progressive king, means that European visitors will feel at home here. The city of Marrakech has stood for almost a thousand years and is one of the most evocative places in the world, just the name conjures up images of this cultural melting pot – sandstone buildings, dusty streets and towering minarets against deep blue skies. Known as The Red City due to its old city walls, Marrakech has been a popular tourist destination since the 1960s, attracting everyone from The Beatles to Churchill. It’s a place to engage the senses, especially in the famous souks. These vibrant markets are a whirlwind of colour and noise, where throngs of people weave between tightly packed stalls exhibiting pyramids of brightly coloured spices, richly woven rugs and a thousand other exotic goods. Enticing smells waft around you, the clamour of voices haggling and the cries of vendors competing for customers provide a magical backing track to this wonderful city.

If music be the food of love... W

ell the bard knew it and musicians Venetia and Ben Johannes knew it too.

“The Johannes’s piano was a really exciting project for us. Like a fine tailored suit, we spent countless hours meeting with the couple, getting to know their preferences and ensuring it was the perfect fit for them.” Chris Norman
