F

estival fever is gripping the north east... and it has nothing to do with Oxegen! Our very own Prawn Idol has been taking place for the last two months at various venues around the region and the countdown is now on for the final. The singing contest forms part of the Clogherhead Prawn Festival which makes a welcome return after 15 years on July 16th-18th. ‘The idea behind Prawn Idol was to bring the festival right up to date,’ says Brian Gargan, Festival Committee PRO. ‘Years ago, organisers used to run the Prawn Queen, which was a beauty pageant but we felt that we needed to modernise things.’ The return of the Prawn Festival after more than a decade is a move that locals are hoping will bring people back into the picturesque fishing village. ‘The area hasn’t moved on a lot since the last Prawn Festival,’ adds Brian. ‘Every year holidaymakers come to the caravan parks from the North and Dublin and apart from

12 12

the Blessing of the Boats, there is nothing for them to do. So we decided to change that! Besides giving the local businesses a boost we wanted to get people talking about Clogherhead again. The buzz that the festival brings to the village is incredible and we’re looking forward to recapturing that carnival atmosphere again this year.’ Festival organisers are hoping to attract more than 5,000 visitors to the village over the three days. Committee member Frank Godfrey, said: ‘There is a great buzz out there amongst the people in anticipation of the festival’s return and the amount of support is phenomenal!’ The festival kicks off on the Friday with the Parade at 7.30pm followed by the Opening Ceremony. Former international goalkeeper Packie Bonner will be there as will Pascal Mooney of RTE and the Minister for Tourism, Mary Hanafin. Each day is action-packed, with entertainment for all of the family from cookery demonstrations and farmers’ market, kids’ discos, abseiling, a mobile

scuba diving swimming pool, free sailing, canoeing and kiteboarding lessons, jet-ski racing, a Body & Soul Tent and much more. Clogherhead’s strongest man will be also be revealed at the Bushtucker Trial which takes place on the Sunday from 3-4pm. ‘It’s along the lines of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here...in which the contestants are given tasks and it’ll be a case of who survives the longest!’ adds Brian. The Prawn Idol Final takes place in a marquee at the harbour car park at 5.30pm on the Sunday. For just €12 a ticket you can see all 18 contestants compete for the €3,000 cash prize and be entertained afterwards by Classic Beatles and then later, Boogie Nights. ‘We’re all really excited about the final. Prawn Idol has taken on a life of its own and is fast becoming one of the biggest highlights of the festival,’ says Brian. ‘The great thing is that it’s not a popularity contest. There are judges at every heat so only the best singer goes through and ultimately wins.’

World Record Attempt

Hollingsworth-Pulse Aquathlon Final

The final of this fantastic three-part series begins at 12noon on Saturday, July 17th. The 750m swim starts and finishes in Clogherhead harbour (Port Oriel) and swimmers enter and exit the water from the public slipway in the harbour area. The 5km run takes swimmers along the road towards Clogherhead village and then along Little Strand beach. Runners will turn at a marker on the beach and return along the same route to finish at the harbour.

The Tall Ships

The arrival of the Johanna Lucretia – a British Tall Ship that was built in Belgium in 1945 – on the Friday morning promises to be a major crowd puller. Although originally built as a fishing vessel, she was never used for that purpose and was converted for recreational use in 1954, by the then owner Ber van Meer. The Johanna Lucretia is open all weekend for guided tours and is available for hire any night for a fee of €2,000!

Allow yourself to be transported back to an age where music was heartfelt and spurred one to really dance! The Gramophone Disco is a magical and romantic world of vintage sounds and visuals that combines 78 records played on wind up gramophones and classic vinyl records. This time however it will also have contributions from up and coming local acts in Drogheda! The Magic Lantern Cinema projects highlights of classic and early film that are tailor made to marry with the mood of the music. The overall atmosphere is a dizzying party of great music and dancing – it’d be a shame to miss it!

If you’ve been dreaming about beating the French this summer, well now’s your chance by getting involved in a world record breaking attempt. The French currently hold the record for the most people buried in the sand simultaneously, so 343 people or more is needed to beat the record. To get involved, you simply need to turn up on Little Strand Beach on Saturday, July 17th at 3pm where plastic spades will be handed out. Keeping in line with Guinness’ guidelines you have 30 minutes to dig the hole and bury the chosen person from the neck down. All buried persons (over eight years) must remain buried for five minutes simultaneously!

Bungee Jump in aid of RNLI

Adrenaline junkies can satisfy their cravings by taking part in this fundraising bungee jump. Taking place all day on the Sunday, it is one of the main attractions at this year’s Prawn Festival. The bungee jump will be situated on the pier and the jump will be from a dizzy height of 65 meters. A sponsorship of €200 is required to do the jump which covers the cost of taking the leap while also giving a massive amount back to the RNLI.

Real Life

Rob Butler,

Petch Cundill, Slane ‘I used to go to Oxegen back in the day! It was always great fun and the music was always brilliant. The best part of the festival was spending time with my friends. It was a bit muddy but fun all the same.’

North Road ‘I’ve been to Witness and Oxegen. Witness was the old Oxegen before it changed ownership. The best Oxegen I’ve ever been to was David Bowie. Loads of the bands played extra sets and The Killers were the act in the new band tent. Unfortunately I’m not going this year, but I’d love to be – the line-up’s brilliant.’

Festival fever heats up As the summer concert season Katie Kierans finds out about your favourite gigs

Cormac Stafford, Clogherhead ‘I went to Oxegen last year with my mate, it was brilliant! The bands were class even though I didn’t know half of them. I especially liked this random band called Ice, they were an unknown act but they were class. I’d love to be going this year but it’s a lot of money.’ Nick McCormack,

Katie and Laura Sullivan, Highlands

‘Katie’s going to Oxegen for her 21st. I’d like to be going but it’s too expensive! We’re really disappointed that there’s no Slane this year as we normally go every year. It’s so much cheaper than Oxegen too. All our friends go as well and it’s usually always a great day.

Brookville ‘I can’t afford to go to Oxegen this year. So I’m going to Electric Picnic instead. I prefer going to the Picnic with my mates, it’s more chilled and there’s more stuff in the tents, not just music. It’s always good whereas with Oxegen some years it’s good and some years it’s bad.’

Donna Farrell, Dublin Road ‘Would

you believe that I’ve never been to Oxegen. I love travelling so I’m nearly always away for that weekend or I’d have something else on. This year is the best line-up yet. I thought I was going to be away but as it turns out I won’t be. I’d love to get tickets. I went to Slane last year – it was amazing! I’m really disappointed that it’s not on this year.’

Ciara Conaghan, Boyne Hall

‘I’ve never been to Oxegen. I don’t like muck and I hate tents! I’ve only ever stayed in a tent once and that was in someone’s back garden. I couldn’t go four days without showering so Oxygen’s a no for me.’

anston Daragh O’Riordan, Gorm year but I

‘I’d love to be going to Oxegen this t last don’t think I can get the time off work. I wen Leon of s year – the line-up was deadly. The King s and Snow Patrol were class. I spent three hour an still watching Blur and I hate Blur! But it was unbelievable weekend.’

Laura Gogan,

Mornington ‘I’m going to Oxegen this year and I’m kind of excited. I don’t even know who’s playing yet. I got it as a birthday present off one of my friends, and I’m going to kill her because it was too much. The only act that I heard is playing is The Prodigy.’

Steal the SATC look

Recreate the complexions of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda with Emma Woods’ make-up secrets

lmost every girl I know has seen the new Sex and the City movie – and has already identified which character they are, or at least most likely to be! This month, I want to share the top make-up secrets which were used in the movie to give the girls their gorgeous glamorous glow... Although Carrie had many looks in the film, I noticed how ‘stepped up’ her make-up was in this movie in comparison to Sex And The City 1. I personally favour the more flawless, softer complexion on Carrie which she wears in her scenes during the day. In order to accomplish this more subdued skin texture, Carrie kept her look soft with a healthy rosy flush to her cheeks and clean natural skin, moving away from the matte look. But even with a natural look, you need to sport make-up! On Carrie’s natural look, she used a cream blush which could be layered and blended more easily, such as Clinique Blushwear Cream Stick, €26, Mahers Chemist, West St. She also used a light-weight foundation that gave her a light, dewy finish and incorporated that with using concealer only when

and where she needed it. I love Fuschia’s Mineral Make-up which guarantee’s the perfect finish every time for €26. The end result is something that looks both realistic and also good on film. For all you minxes who want to recreate the sexy, stunning look of Samantha the first thing that I noticed about Miss Jones is her bronzed sizzling complexion. Her make-up needs to echo her racy image and tanning will give this instant impact to the skin. (Not 20

E Drogheda

too bronzed, however, as we don’t want you looking like her during a hot flush!) A perfect bronzer for ‘a Samantha’ is Egypt Wonder, Earthpot, €26.95, Superpharm Chemist, West St, or if you prefer a more matte texture, Isadora Bronzing Powder in Golden Tan, is fantastic (€19, Superpharm Chemist, West St). To complete Samantha’s look get your hands on a raunchy red lipstick, such as Dior’s Runaway Red, which also has a runaway cost at €33, Hickey’s Pharmacy, West St. Perpetually innocent Charlotte needs a sweet flush of color on her cheeks (after all, she blushes a lot with Samantha around!). Kristin Davis nails the look of an all-American girl with soft glossy tones and a glowing complexion. It all seems to appear as though it melts perfectly on Charlotte. By using Rimmel’s new moussy textured foundation the skin will have a well-polished appearance. It should be applied with a brush in order to build up coverage softly and seamlessly which will stay in place all day. Rimmel’s Cool Matte Mousse costs €15 in Boots, Laurence Town Centre, and it comes in a range of five colours. Staying pure and keeping with the ever glamorous Charlotte, investing in a lip gloss that will see us through the summer to those darker winter months is a must! I would choose coral but with a nude consistency such as Make Up For Ever Lab Shine ‘the Metal Collection’ which utilizes Make Up For Ever’s Metal Powder for a

Linda Crosby of La SpaTherapie answers your questions My daughter suffers badly with hay fever at this time of year. I would prefer to use natural remedies – any suggestions? Fiona, Dunleer Hopi ear candling is highly recommended. It’s a completely natural treatment and guarantees results over time. It’s based on an old Indian tribe ritual where nylon cloth is soaked in beeswax, hardened and rolled into a small candle shape which is then placed gently into the ear. The candle slowly burns to ¾ length, acting as a chimney drawing out the impurities from the sinus and inner ear. The treatment takes 30 minutes, is very safe and highly effective in combating hay fever. A course of treatments may be recommended.

There are many tanning products out there, how do I know which one is best for me? Majella, Bettystown The most important advice I can give is to get your tan done professionally by a salon or spa. Regardless of the make of tan it is the pre-treatment, the application and maintenance that makes for a great tan. Always get a patch test 24 hours before application to make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients. Happy Tanning!

Got a beauty dilemma?

Email Linda Crosby at: info@ essentialdrogheda.com with your query chrome, mirror finish. Hot off the lips of our preppy princess herself from the Sex & the City set, the lipgloss is due to hit our stores shortly and will retail at €18. Redheads like Miranda (and her reallife doppelganger Cynthia Nixon) often need a little help to keep skin from looking washed-out next to their fiery locks. Giant Sunpowder, from GOSH (€19.99, Health Express, Scotch Hall) does the trick to give Miranda’s face a healthy radiance. We also saw a ‘Fun Miranda’ in SATC2, where her make-up artists were extremely clever and gave Miranda a more relaxed but raunchier appeal through her make-up. Her eyes had so much more going on – and this was achieved by using coffee colour, melted brown tones.

Then you haven’t been ready... New website quitsmoking.ie promises to prepare the mind for a life without cigarettes By Carmel Riggs

A

sk any ex-smoker and they will give you the same answer: kicking the habit was the hardest task they ever faced. Whether through using nicotine replacements such as gum or patches or just sheer willpower, the journey to become a fully-fledged non-smoker was a long one. For others however, the quitting process is not always so successful with the lure of the cigarette proving too difficult to resist. Now a new website, www.quitsmoking. ie – which has been compiled by 16 of the country’s top hypnotists – is hoping to help smokers get in the zone for kicking the habit for good. According to Karl Curtis, Advanced Clinical Hypnotist at the Irish Hypnosis Clinic on Fair Street, most people fail to quit because they are not ready and the purpose of quitsmoking. ie is to get the mind ready.

26

says. ‘The Irish Hypnosis Clinic has branches all over the country and we have helped thousands of people in Ireland quit smoking and enjoy the process,’ he says. ‘Unfortunately we have also turned many others away because the client was not ready to quit or was being pushed into it by someone else. If they are not ready we advise them to contact us again when they are truly ready. ‘But over the years many potential clients have asked us how do they get ready? We had no answer for them so we decided to develop this programme to help people get ready to quit smoking.’ The programme is in audio format which can be downloaded free of charge from the website. Karl is eager to point out that the website is not a selling site and it’s up to every individual how they choose to ‘If a kick the habit afterwards. person ‘Whether people choose to go off is not cigarettes with gums or patches it’s their ready for choice. But if followed up with a hypnosis change then session this programme is virtually bulletnothing proof,’ adds Karl who also has clinics in will help Dundalk and Navan. them,’ he So why is hypnosis so effective? ‘Because it changes the thought patterns within the subconscious mind,’ says Karl. ‘Your The quitsmoking.ie programme is subconscious mind is the feeling, the e available to download free of charg emotional part of you. certain times and in certain situations. If that thought pattern is changed then that person will not feel like smoking any more. ‘They are not feeling deprived and will simply be happy to be a non-smoker. The withdrawal symptoms will be very minor or non-existent. The same is true for people who overeat. Once the thought patterns are changed then they no longer feel like overeating and will automatically lose weight.’ According to Karl, people’s biggest problem with hypnosis is they don’t understand it. ‘People fear that they will lose control and end up running around like a chicken like they might have seen on TV. But that is so far from the truth. They also fear that they will be put to sleep or knocked out, but the fact is that the client is guided into a state of mental and physical relaxation. They are not asleep and will remember everything that occurs in a session.’

Interior designer Niamh Carter reveals why the hues you choose for your home can play havoc with your emotions

C

olour plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live. It can sway thinking, change actions and cause reactions. It can irritate or soothe your eyes, raise your blood pressure or suppress your appetite. As a powerful form of communication, colour is irreplaceable and, in interior design, colour reflects both the brand and identity of your project. Whether you want to provide a place for your clients to relax or impress visitors to your home, colour is essential in reflecting your character and enhancing your lifestyle. When selecting room colours you should keep in mind the psychology behind these magnificent hues to help you along with your colour schemes. For fresh, new ideas select from the current trends. Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind...

Red: An extremely intense colour that immediately evokes passionate emotions. This colour is associated with the heart and perhaps that is why it symbolises matters of the heart or love, passion and desire. Red is known to stimulate the appetite – so it’s an excellent colour for dining rooms. Too much red, however, can create problems related to the blood pressure and anger so remember less is more! Use subtle

tones of red through fabrics and furniture to blend in with your colour scheme. A rich colour red is most suited to dark woods.

Purple: This colour is often regarded as the colour that signifies royalty and wealth. It also has a very large feminine appeal to it and is therefore closely associated with romance. It can however seem artificial at times. This colour signifies balance and possesses mystical qualities that can calm the mind and encourage creativity. The use of purple and lime green, if done correctly, can cause a dramatic effect blended with soft furnishings and accessories. Green: As soon as someone talks about green the one most common association is that green is the symbol of nature. It therefore has relaxing qualities. Citrus green enhances the appetite and is often used in kitchens but if used in the wrong way can promote sickness. Sage green is a gentle colour and mixed with soft creams can alleviate depression, anxiety and nervousness. Try uplifting some disused furniture with sage greens and creams to enhance your rooms. Brown: Brown says stability, reliability, and approachability. It is the colour of our earth and is associated with all things natural or organic. Brown is a subtle colour and mixed with oranges, greens and cream can create an effective colour scheme. Consider a multi-coloured rug, some coloured ceramics or glassware, vivid prints or paintings. The overall effect will be airy and soothing - yet the flashes of colour can bring in your personality and be your signature touches.

Blue: Blue is the overwhelming favourite colour. It is seen as trustworthy, dependable and committed. Electric or brilliant blues become dynamic and dramatic – an engaging colour that expresses exhilaration. However, some shades or the overuse of blue may come across as cold or uncaring. Consider using blues in a bedroom to help sleeping patterns. A mix of silver can create a striking look.

If you are stuck for ideas on how to change your room. Look at the pieces of furniture, fabrics and accessories you want to use. A picture or a piece of furniture may be your inspiration. Select cuttings from magazines and start to build up on your ideas. Remember, having the right recipe for your room is important. Add splashes of colour to bring the room together by using accent colours and always remember that less is more! For more information on colour or to arrange a consultation, contact Niamh on 087-6445050. t started as a hobby at first, while I was working as a veterinary nurse. I took on to make small cakes for friends’ birthdays and after I built up my confidence I decided if I was going to do this I wanted to be the best! ‘So I trained in Squires in the UK first and then later in Canada and here in Ireland. Kevin was so impressed he decided to train also. ‘Our extensive training in cake decorating covers baking, sugarpaste, novelty modelling, sugar flowers, chocolate, marzipan, pastillage, piping and royal icing. ‘I can confidently say that our cakes are different to everyone else’s. Besides being gluton-free, they look amazing and taste delicious too!

‘Unlike others, we bake everything from scratch. It might be a little more expensive to produce but we don’t charge any extra for it. ‘Our wedding cakes and wedding cupcakes are very popular at the moment and they’re not super expensive either! ‘I always tell people that the actual baking of the cake is the easy part! Working with sugar is the most challenging bit as you have to be really patient as well as being in the right frame of mind. ‘We are constantly changing our recipes and think nothing about spending hours perfecting a cake. One time we spent six hours dying everything blue just so we could get the colour right! That’s where all our training pays off as we can match anything to the colour that a client wants.

Drive

Behind The Wheel

Make: Subaru Impreza Turbo Wagon Engine: 2L Turbo

How long do you have it? Since Christmas, I share it with my partner Barry. For me, it’s the practicality of it that I love as I have two dogs. For Barry, it’s about driving a nice sports car! What was your first car and how old were you? A Fiat Tippo that was nicknamed ‘The Teapot’. I got it when I was 18 and living in Spain. It was cheap and cheerful, it only cost me €500. However, two months later it was a write-off. Thankfully I was fine, it was just my pride that got hurt!

What’s your dream drive? The Aston Martin – they’re good looking, fast and elegant! If it’s good enough for James Bond it’s good enough for me.

Lyndsay Doran, is a member of the ALMC Motorclub

How often do you change your car? Whenever something comes up that I want and I’m able to change it then I do. But I’ll be sticking with the Subaru Imprezza for a long time. Who is you insurer and why? Insure.ie as they’re the only company who would give me a quote. A lot of companies don’t offer insurance when they hear the word Imprezza, but insure.ie were absolutely fantastic.

How old where you when you passed your test? I was 22 and I got it third time around.

What’s on your CD player? Glee, I absolutely love it!

What was the best car you ever drove? I test drove the Mitsubishi Evo X and it was really nice to drive. It was a novelty to get to drive such an expensive car. But my favourite car is my own!

Who would be your dream passenger? I’d have to say Stephen Fry. He has some interesting cars himself and is one of my favourite actors. He’s very entertaining.

What was your first bike and when did you start riding? A Honda VT250 Spada that I bought when I got my first job after college, about 10 years ago now. What bike do you currently have and how long have you had it? A Cagiva Raptor 650, which I’ve had now for five years.

Niall Matthews a lives in Grange Rath and is s ion cat uni Visual Comm consultant

Do you use a Sat Nav? Yeah I have two – a portable one by Navigon and I’ve a touch screen navigator in the car also.

What bikes would be in your fantasy garage? The new Ducati 1200 Multistrada, a Vincent Black shadow, the new Norton Commando plus my own designed and built bike.

What protective gear do you wear? HJC Helmet, Custom leather jacket, Joe Rocket jeans, Lidl gloves and boots. What type of motorcycle racing do you prefer? I like road racing and 24hr/8hr endurance racing.

with who would it be? Guy Martin, he seems like a sound fella. What habits of other road users do find most annoying/ dangerous? People not indicating! And people using their mobile phone while driving.

What is your favourite race meet? Skerries, but I would love to see the Boyne Race back. Would you have any suggestions for the RSA to Who is your favourite racer improve safety for bikers? Small Talk with

Graham Hughes CEO of Outsource Support Services & President of Drogheda & District Chamber

Graham Hughes, President of Drogheda & District Chamber with Patricia Rooney

Describe your day to day role? I oversee the development of the business. My day-to-day duties range from finance to strategy, sales and PR – apart from that I do nothing! What do you love most about your job and how long are you in it? I’m in this role two years now and I love the fact that every day brings a new challenge – in other words no two days are the same. What was your first job – and how much did you earn? My first job was working in Peter Marks in the Town Centre and I was on £24.44 per week. I used to give to my mother £12, and the other £12 was for Lucianos on a Friday night. Your greatest professional achievement? To be elected as President of the Drogheda & District Chamber, of course!

What is the strangest business proposal you ever had? About 10 years ago a local business firm had an external security issue and requested that my company provide a security presence on their site whereby one of our security guards would be hidden in a tree undercover for a 12-hour period... no health and safety issues there! Describe your work style? Direct, focused and fair. What are your pet hates in the workplace? I can’t abide people leaving jobs unfinished and passing the buck. Who do you most admire in business? Anyone who can survive in business for more than 20 years has to be admired. The most valuable lesson you have learnt over the years? Loyalty pays. Has the current economic climate changed your spending habits? Yes, but not my wife’s!

Following on from the AGM & Summer Social, the Drogheda & District Chamber would like to announce that Graham Hughes, from Outsource Support Services is their new President. Graham outlined in his acceptance speech …. “…..I will work hard with my Chamber Council, elected representatives and local authorities on getting Drogheda back on the map and in doing so we will protect jobs locally, create jobs locally, strengthen our local economy, encourage inward investment and most importantly protect our town.”

The Chamber is looking forward to an exciting time ahead with many dates confirmed in the events calendar. We are currently working on upcoming Connect 4 Lunches and the launch of the Drogheda Business Excellence Awards. With Anne Marie Graham from Healthforce as the new Marketing & Events Chair she is set to have a busy few months ahead with some very exciting new projects in the pipeline. The Chamber will be sure to keep you updated as they progress. The Chamber’s home webpage is set to be relaunched shortly with lots of

Graham Hughes with Sandra Boyle AIB, Denise Fay Achieve Marketing and Aisling Vaughan AIB

What was the last thing you googled? The city of Rome. We’re heading there on holidays for 12 days shortly and I’m really looking forward to it... What mobile phone do you use and what network are you with? I use an iPhone and I am on the o2 network. Is there any technology you refuse to use? None, I enjoy technology, and would have no fears in using anything. Do you have a mantra in life? No … If you could change anything in the town what would it be? We need to attract some high-end, quality retail units into West St in an effort to re-invigorate the town centre. I’d also like to see the pedestrianisation of West St from the top of Stockwell St up to the bottom of Peter St. We have to work on getting a buzz back into the centre of the town. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I’m lucky that I enjoy what I do so with a little bit of hard work I will be running our company, but on a much larger scale.

We Have All the Time in the World

by artist Fiona Dowling, Wednesday, July 7th, 10am-5pm, Droichead Arts Centre Autobiographical paintings, cats and dogs, laughing Buddhas, painted TVs, home crafts… all are part of the world that Fiona has created for this exhibition on love and happiness. Fiona likes to create whimsical poetic alternatives to the mainstream way and pace of life. For this she uses media that are warm, fluffy, colourful, joyful, surprising and often time consuming. We have all the time in the world: time to make things with our hands, time to meditate in front of the TV, time to remember childhood walks... So it’s time to slow down and be touched! Everything Stamullen horse trainer

- Tom McCourt Best thing about being a horse trainer: I suppose it’s the satisfaction in seeing your horses win. At the end of the day that’s what keeps the job ticking over and gives everyone a lift! Best horse you ever trained: Rainbow Dash was a great horse; he won at the Curragh on Derby Day. He retired last year but I had him from when he was three years old. Copper Dock is another good horse and we’re hoping to win something decent with him this year. Best race you ever won: Zhukhov won a premier handicap at the Curragh the year before last which carried a big prize of €40,000 for the winner.

Curragh in 2003. It was a good weekend to say the least! Best way to unwind: A few drinks and something to eat in Whytes in Stamullan.

Best tips for Bellewstown this July: Grantsville, Spring Hawk, Giants Slalom, and Quai Du Roi. Quaiu Du Roi won in Bellewstown the year before last and has a very good chance this year. Best advice you ever achieved: Keep yourself in the best company and your horses in the worst! Best achievement: Having two winners – Rainbow Dash and Raining – at the Derby meeting in the 46

E Drogheda

Best hobby: I’m lucky, racing is my hobby!

Best thing about living in Stamullen: It’s quiet and very convenient to everywhere.

Best read: The Racing Post, that’s as far as I go reading.

Best childhood memory: Going to Galway races with my dad, Tommy. Not a year went by that we missed.

Best film: I haven’t been to the cinema in the last 10 years and the last film I saw was Titanic, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Best jockey: Ben Curtis, he rides all my horses on the flat. I’d class him a very good up and coming jockey. He’s still an apprentice but has a big future. Best race meeting: Galway, without a doubt! I’ve been going there since I could walk. My father never missed Galway; it’s the Cheltenham of Ireland. The buzz of it is incredible.

weekends away. My favourite haunt is the Slieve Russell Hotel in Cavan – it’s a great place to switch off from everything.

Best snack: I’ll eat anything! Best drink: A pint of Bulmers. Best restaurant: Whytes in Stamullen. I like a steak but if there’s duck or venison on the menu I’d go for them instead. Best hideaway: I’m not a sun worshipper so we like to go for quiet
